Research Topic: The study of Constructed Landscapes in KLCC Park Constructed landscape de nes how architecture becomes a vehicle in creating and evolving relationship with the users of the environment, clarifying the relationship between landscape and nature. Background Designed by Roberto Burle Marx, world-recognized Brazilian landscape architect, KLCC Park was created in 1998 at the same time the Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) was completed. To “leave the world a little more sensitive and a little more educated to the importance of nature,” was the intention of the design. It showcases the local heritage of tropical greenery with an integration of man-made features. It creates a contrasting environment to the hustle and bustle of the busy city by having a pocket of calming greenery. The creation of the park had been in uenced by conservation and biodiversity, with an inclusion of 1900 indigenous trees, 66 species of palms and 23 of the mature and rare species were transplanted into the park grounds. The boost in environment and the tropical plants were chosen to attract local and migratory birds. Honing a variety of park features, many users, local and foreign come to explore the space for its abundance of ora and fauna in the middle of a concrete city. Introduction An urban heartscape in the middle of a growing city, KLCC park provides a balance between man and nature. The scenes within the space is able to capture raw emotions due to its organic nature of unpredictability. The spaces within the park amplify its surroundings. A large space with fountains, jogging paths, varieties of ora and fauna, are incorporated to create not only a visual but dynamic experience. They allow users to interact with the space while enjoying the environment or its company. Its presence provides an area where users are able to fully experience both the tangible and intangible environment.
Keywords Constructed The process of constructing a building or infrastructure, the art and science of forming object, systems and/or organizations. From the Latin root constructio (from com- meaning “together” and sstruere is “to pile up”). To create something of a purpose and in the case of KLCC Park, to construct concrete pathways and structures such as pavilions to enhance user interaction and connectivity with the space. Landscape Visible features of an area of land, landforms and how they integrate with the natural and man-made features. It may include the physical elements of geographically de ned landforms, mountains, trees, etc. Human elements like the di erent forms of land use, building and structures are included as well. Generally, it would be referred to as the scenery and setting of the location. KLCC Park fully utilizes its landscape with its wide variety of nature, preserving and allowing users to appreciate the greenery around them. Research Questions Does the constructed landscape of the park ful ll its aim to create a relationship between the natural landscape and the user? 1. How important is the landscape of the park to the people in the city? How do those users interact with the parkscape? 2. How do the users perceive the city through the landscape, and does it a ect their enjoyment of the overall space? 3. How does the design of the constructed landscape a ect the user interaction as they explore the space? 4. How does the built landscape blend in with the natural landscape, and what are its e ects on the users?
Objectives To study the constructed landscape and other related aspects regarding the city and the nature surrounding Kuala Lumpur City Centre. 1. To explore how the constructed landscape can a ect the mood and use of an area. 2. To uncover how the constructed features are integrated into the natural topography and landscape. 3. To discover the issues that may change due to the constructed landscape, whether positive or negative. Signi cance The study of constructed landscape in the heart of the city allows us to understand the importance and how it a ects the concrete city life. 1. It increases our skill to analyze a site, knowing its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. 2. Further develop our understanding of the purpose of a constructed landscape and how it may a ect the city and its users. 3. Enhances our awareness towards the details in the built and natural environment and its functions. 4. Increases our awareness of the potential of the space and the experiences they create with the user interaction. Methodology - Sketches - Photo and video documentation - Photobook Expected Outcome 1. Learning the functions of constructed landscape and how it can bene t in relation to the site. 2. To understand how the constructed landscape can be utilized and built to maximize the function and environment of the space. 3. To be able to incorporate the functions and uses of constructed landscape in further works. Reference List Hassan, N., & Hanif, R. (n.d.). CITY INNOVATION CASE STUDY BRIEF.
