Aunque nunca llegue a ser considerado artista, cualquiera puede desarrollar su capacidad expresiva y conciencia crítica, y no a todos conviene que ese potencial sea estimulado. Para quienes lo apreciamos y disfrutamos, el arte es como una droga o la medicina para una enfermedad crónica: simplemente no podemos prescindir de él. Alexandre Orion (São Paulo, 1978) has been familiar with the realities of the street from a young age, and quickly learned to draw artistic inspiration from the masses. In 2001 he conceived Metabiotica, a project capturing the moments when people interact with his paintings. Rai Escalé, 44 I studied Fine Art, but spent ten years without painting and worked installing kitchens instead. I was on the road to becoming a Sunday artist, but since I’ve been my own boss things are looking up. Now I am a painter, my field is visual arts, and I have a big sunny studio in Gracia. I want to go to London to check out Bacon’s retrospective exhibition at the Tate, and then I’m going to Miami for three months as I’ve been invited by some collectors. This is the life!

Mis dibujos pueden salir de una revista, de la TV, de una cara que he visto por la calle. Me gusta ver galerías de Madrid y Berlín, leer, empaparme. Paso de enchufes y tonterías y, como soy una pesimista, no paro de trabajar. Es en lo único que creo. Tengo ganas de hacer muchas cosas pero me falta tiempo y dinero. Si tuviera 24 horas al día para pintar, ¡me volvería loca! Sonia Carballo Torres (Socatoba), 29 It’s easier for me to express myself using my hands rather than words. I am an artist because my body wants me to be. My drawings can spring from something I’ve seen in a magazine, on the TV, or on the faces I see in the street. I like going to galleries in Madrid and Berlin, reading and immersing myself. I can’t be bothered with networking and such nonsense, and because I’m a pessimist, I never stop working. My art is the only thing I believe in. I’d love to do all sorts of things but lack of time and money prevent me. If I could paint for 24 hours a day, I’d go crazy.

Andrea Michaelsson (Btoy), 31 Soy artista, vengo del graffiti y a veces pinto en la calle. Suelo trabajar con la música puesta y siempre busco la pared más vieja y llena de pintadas, donde un dibujo bien hecho resalta más. Mi obra cuenta historias decadentes, como la serie de chicas de los años 20 a 50 en la que trabajo ahora. Me gustan Lolo, Sosaku Miyasaki y Andrea Luschi. El año que viene me encantaría pasar unos días en una playa paradisíaca de Indonesia, ahí, entre palmeras. Andrea Michaelsson (Btoy), 31 I’m an artist, my background is graffiti and sometimes I paint on public walls. I like to work with music on, and I always look for an old wall already covered in graffiti, where a great piece will stand out more. My work always tells a decadent story, like my current series of girls from the 20s to the 50s. I like Lolo, Sosaku Miyasaki and Andrea Luschi. Next year, I’d like to spend some time on a paradise beach in Indonesia, somewhere amongst palm trees.

Ilia Mayer (Btoy), 33 Soy dibujante y músico. La cosa me viene de muy pequeño, cuando ya enredaba con los Dacs por las paredes de casa. Entre otras cosas, trabajo con compañías de danza y teatro, creando en directo sobre el escenario. Me inspiro en los cómics, en la música, en la ropa de la gente, en otros artistas y en cosas mías. Las galerías de Barcelona que más me gustan son H2O, ADN y Miscelänea. Me gustaría mucho ir a Japón. Y si expusiera allí sería ya… increíble. Ilia Mayer (Btoy), 33 I’m an artist and a musician. I’ve been drawing since I was a little kid, when I’d draw all over the walls with crayons. One of the things I do is work with dance and theatre companies, drawing live on stage. I find inspiration in comics, music, people’s clothes, other artists and in my personal life. The galleries I like most in Barcelona are H2O, ADN and Miscelänea. I’d love to go to Japan. Exhibiting there would be absolutely incredible.

Pinto porque si no lo hago soy un tipo muy irritable. Es lo primero que pienso cuando me levanto. Es mi idioma. Dejé de hacer encargos comerciales porque cada vez que comprometo mi trabajo soy muy infeliz. Este autorretrato es el resultado de un corte de pelo horrible que me hizo mi mujer. Malinterpretó lo que quise decir por “corto” y por atrás acabé pareciendo un monje. mike swaney, 30 I’m originally from Vancouver and moved to Barcelona out of instinct. I knew I had to come here. What attracted me was the way the people here enjoy the simple things in life. I paint because if I don’t, I’m a really cranky guy. It’s the first thing I think about when I get up. It’s my language. I deliberately stopped doing commercial work, because whenever I compromise my work I’m not happy with it. This self-portrait is the outcome of a really terrible haircut my wife gave me. She got confused by what I meant by “short” and from behind, I ended up looking like a monk.

Jesús Franco es un cineasta con casi 200 películas producidas a caballo entre el cine erótico, el porno y el de terror, y distinguido con el Goya de Honor en 2008. Nos cuenta dónde llevaría a su héroe Orson Welles si el director estadounidense de cine visitara Málaga. “Orson Welles es un amigo al cual admiro muchísimo por su honestidad y generosidad, un cineasta que con muy pocos elementos conseguía unas imágenes realmente bellas. Primero, le llevaría a la plaza de la Malagueta, a ver los toros. Él era un auténtico aficionado, un torero de pasión que no siguió adelante por miedo y porque sabía que su carrera profesional no estaba en el ruedo. Menos mal. Por otro lado, le acompañaría a Ronda, una localidad majestuosa, allí al conocido ‘Balcón del coño’, porque ésta es la expresión que sueltas cuando te asomas a la balconada natural y miras el precipicio a tus pies. Además, Orson era muy amigo del torero rondeño Antonio Ordoñez, que aupó el mito de la Escuela de Ronda y que fue inmortalizado por la pluma de Hemingway en la serie de reportajes para la revista Life publicada en 1959 con el título El verano sangriento. A Orson Welles le gustaba mucho el ‘pescaíto’ frito, así que le llevaría a El Tintero en Rincón de la Victoria (carretera de Almería, 99), un restaurante originalísimo donde se subasta el plato de frito y un camarero vocifera la factura con un “¡Y yo cobro!”. Por último, le acompañaría al Teatro Cervantes. Aunque es antiguo -data del año 1870-, está en perfectas condiciones, tiene una programación regular y es la sede del Festival de Cine de Málaga. Pero a ver cine, Orson me llevaría a mí, y no yo a él”. 14 LING
Jesús Franco has made nearly 200 films, ranging in genre from erotic to porn to horror. In 2008 he was awarded a Goya award for his life’s work. Here, he takes an imaginary walk around Malaga with his hero, the director Orson Welles. “Orson Welles is a friend I admire immensely for his honesty and generosity, a filmmaker who created fantastic images with very few resources. First, I’d take him to the plaza de la Malagueta, to see a bull fight. He was a real aficionado, a passionate bullfighter who decided not to pursue a professional career because of fear and because he knew deep down he was not destined to be in the ring. Too right! I would also take him to Ronda, a majestic place in the hills known as the ‘Oh my God!’ town, because that’s what you’ll say when you stand on the ledge of the rocks and look down at the precipice at your feet. Also, Orson was a good friend of the matador Antonio Ordoñez, who brought the legendary Ronda School to life and was immortalised by Hemingway in a series of articles for Life magazine, published in 1959 under the title The Bloody Summer. Orson Welles loved fried fish, so I would take him to El Tintero in Rincón de la Victoria (carretera de Almería, 99), a restaurant where plates of fish are sold by auction and the waiter shouts the bill out loud. Finally, I would accompany him to the Teatro Cervantes. Even though it’s old, dating back to 1870, it is still in perfect condition and is the seat of the Malaga Film Festival. But let’s be honest, Orson would be taking me to the cinema, not the other way round.”

Intérpretes: Juan Diego Botto, Jordi Mollà, Núria Prims, Aitor Merino, Diana Gálvez, Cayetana Guillén Cuervo, Mercedes Sampietro. “Basada en el libro de José Angel Mañas, esta película pretende retratar a un grupo de jóvenes, la crónica desgarrada -pero a la vez vital- de sus relaciones afectivas y familiares. Lógicamente, se plantea rodar en Madrid, para encontrar esos sitios que se describen en el libro. Para ello, se estuvo realizando durante dos meses una búsqueda de bares de copas en todas las zonas de ocio de Madrid, para encontrar la localización principal, el Bar Kronen. Pero siempre había algún inconveniente para la planificación del rodaje. Y finalmente, un interior a destacar es el que se utilizó para evocar los andamios de un piso abandonado. Since the book is set in Madrid, the film was shot here, too. We spent two months looking for the perfect bar to represent the eponymous Bar Kronen, but there was always something wrong. Finally, we found the ideal place by accident. It was for rent on calle Gaztambide, 46, in the Moncloa district. A lot of other bars and clubs are featured in the film, among them Sala Revólver (Fernández de Los Ríos, 67), El Templo del Gato (Trujillos, 7), San Mateo 6, at that very address, and Y’asta, on calle Valverde, next to the Telefónica building. During filming, the production team would always eat at Sazadón (Gaztambide, 44), which serves home-made Asturian food. One of the most difficult shots, in terms of production, was the scene of the bet, in which two of the guys hang from the bridge on calle Juan Bravo, over the paseo de la Castellana. Another complicated scene was when the lead characters had to drive against traffic. The Azca tunnels had to be closed off for ten hours while we filmed this scene with stunt specialists. One more scene that required specialists was the chase, where they had to zig-zag through cars on calle Arenal, from Puerta del Sol to Plaza de Ópera. And finally, a great interior worth mentioning is the one we used to suggest scaffolding on an abandoned block of flats. We filmed it in the Teatro Real de Madrid (plaza Isabel II), while the building was being refurbished in 1994.”

En todo lo que hacemos, lo importante es la experiencia y, sobre todo, tener relaciones humanas de calidad. Compartir es la base de todo. Lo más difícil es vencer el miedo. Compartir es un acto de confianza, en ti mismo y en el otro. Y hoy en día tenemos la confianza muy minada. Cuando vivía en Miles de Viviendas, una casa que okupamos’ después de las manifestaciones en contra de la guerra de Iraq en 2003, lo compartíamos todo: el dinero, la casa, los conocimientos o la comida que recogíamos de la “basura” del MercaBarna. Todos los problemas, incluso los emocionales, formaban parte del grupo. En compañía, la carga de nuestra existencia es más fácil de llevar. Pepe Rovira, actor en la película El taxista ful y uno de los fundadores del grupo anticapitalista Dinero Gratis, explica en el film que su hijo un día le dijo: “Tener amigos es como tener dinero”. No tenían un duro, pero la ayuda de sus amigos lo hacía todo más fácil. Ahora compartimos menos que antes. Un ejemplo: los bancos públicos unipersonales de Barcelona. El espacio público de la ciudad ya no es un sitio para estar, sino un lugar de paso para consumir. Estar en la calle charlando con amigos no da beneficios, y por eso no interesa. El lema de Sarkozy en su última campaña era “Trabajar más para ganar más”. Ahora Montilla dice, de hecho, “Compañeros, ante la crisis, unámonos, y los que podáis, compraros un coche”. Yo soy partidario de otro lema: “Trabajar menos y consumir menos”. Creo que vivir haciendo algo que te gusta no es trabajar. Si compartiéramos más, tendríamos un mundo con menos horror y angustia. Pero no por altruismo ni por conseguir un mundo mejor, sino porque si confías en los que te rodean y ellos en ti, estás más tranquilo y es más fácil encontrar tu propio bien y que éste sea más rico. Lo más importante que he aprendido compartiendo es a no esperar nada. Si ahora vivo en un loft okupado a primera línea de mar y solo, en el centro de Barcelona, es porque no me lo he planteado mucho. Cuando piensas demasiado en el futuro, te impides vivir el presente.
The important things in life are experiences and having high-quality human relationships. Sharing is the basis of all this. The most difficult thing about sharing is ridding yourself of fear. Sharing is an act of trust, in yourself and in others. These days our trust is weak. When I lived in Miles de Viviendas, a squat we founded after the demonstrations against the war in Iraq in 2003, we shared everything: money, the house, knowledge and food that we retrieved from the MercaBarna market’s garbage. All our problems, including emotional ones, became part of the group. With company, the weight of our existence is easier to bear. Pepe Rovira, one of the founders of the anti-capitalist group Dinero Gratis (Free Money) who also stars in El Taxista Ful [a film about a man who drives stolen taxis at night], quotes his son in the film: “Having friends is like having money.” They were penniless, but the the help of their friends made life much easier. Nowadays we share a lot less than we did before. An example are the one-person benches in Barcelona. The street is no longer a place to linger, but a place to pass through while consuming. Being outside talking to friends doesn’t generate business, so it is discouraged. Sarkozy’s slogan in his last campaign was “Work more to earn more.” Now Montilla is saying, effectively: “Friends, let us unite against the crisis, and those of you who still can, buy a car.” I prefer another motto: “Work less and consume less.” I don’t consider earning a living from something you enjoy as being work.

If we shared more, we’d live in a world with less fear and anxiety. But not because of altruism or to make the world a better place; if you trust those around you and they trust you, you will be much calmer and it’ll be easier to achieve your own well-being. The most important thing I have learned from sharing is not to expect anything. If I now live in a beautiful squat-loft, by the sea, right in the centre of Barcelona, it is because I never planned it. When you think too much about the future, you lose sight of the present.

Tumbada en una hamaca de la galería acristalada de la casa de Andrea, se me ocurre que podría quedarme aquí toda la vida. El sol de Nápoles es tibio, pero el invernadero (sofás, plantas, una gramola, libros) aprovecha hasta el último rayo. Estoy narcotizada de felicidad, y no sé si es la siesta, el café con anís o la tontería que llevo encima. La tontería empezó hace quince días, cuando llegamos con Soledad a Nápoles para ver el Metrò dell’Arte, en la línea 1, con piezas de Joseph Kosuth, Mimmo Rotella o Mario Merz. Soledad quiso pasar a saludar a una vieja amiga del Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Donna Regina. Allí encontró, por casualidad, a más gente que conocía, y decidió que nos quedaríamos un tiempo más. Uno de los colaboradores del museo era Andrea, napolitano de pura cepa, nacido al lado de la Piazza Dante. Empecé a charlar con él porque calzaba unos Gaetano Messina; los zapatos a medida son una de mis debilidades. Al modo galante antiguo, quiso mostrarme la ciudad, y cada rincón era un tema de conversación: Sccapanapoli (cómo se cocinan los struffoli), via Caracciolo (el Vesubio), Villa Floridiana (Funiculì, Funiculà), San Gregorio Armeno (la camorra), via dei Tribunali (las comedias de Totò), etc. No tardamos en acabar en su cama, y pasamos cinco días apenas saliendo de Benedetto Croce, la calle donde tenía su pequeña casa. Cocinábamos casi todo el tiempo (ramacchè, sartu, frittata, casatiello, zeppole), y cuando andaba pensando cuánto tiempo toma aprender napolitano, la llamada de Soledad me devolvió a la tierra. -¿Maaayeeer? –canturrea–. ¿Sigues viva? ¿Envío un comando de rescate? -¿Qué tal, Soledad? He estado pasando a limpio las fichas de las obras que compró la semana pasada –respondo, muy tiesa y profesional. -¿Hace cuánto no te enamorabas? Lo vi enseguida: te brillaban los ojos como cuando conociste a Miquel Barceló y querías llevártelo a casa para peinarle.

He is obsessed with taking pictures of his own reflection, and not only because of the free aesthetics. He describes photography as “that interval of time in which everything stands still,” and a way to find oneself.

Llegó de Colombia hace dos años y unos meses después ya había desarrollado su sistema personal para anticiparse a las averías del metro, los atascos y cualquier imprevisto. Licenciado en Psicología, con un máster en Terapia Familiar y estudiante de Doctorado en Comportamiento Animal y Humano, tiene capacidades suficientes para ayudar a quien no sólo necesita que paseen a su perro, sino también busca a alguien que le escuche.
Patricia ha pasado un par de Nocheviejas sola en su piso porque recogió a un perro abandonado, y no quería dejarlo solo. Ya son quince los perros que ha recogido y a los cuales ha conseguido un hogar, ganándose el apodo de Elvira, la niña de los Tiny Toons. Por eso Patricia no es sólo una más de tantos jóvenes que se ganan un dinero extra paseando perros. Uno de los sueños de esta futura trabajadora social (y una de los pocas madrileñas en el negocio) es tener, en un futuro, un refugio para mascotas.
Tiene un aire a Cruella de Vil, pero ella es una verdadera amante de los animales. Su familia tenía un criadero de perros en Argentina, por eso este oficio le parece un placer. También da clases de pintura, y en su piso guarda los retratos de algunos de sus perros. Semejante afirmación enarcó las cejas de sorpresa a los lisboetas, muchos de los cuales lo identificarían como un truco de marketing, diseñado para atraer a los turistas. Pero, ¿y si no fuera ninguna exageración? Después de todo, los elementos modernos coexisten con los antiguos (y con los anticuados) en todo el país. Aún así, lo que ocurre en Benfica es otra historia. A principios del s. XX, se construyó un barrio obrero en torno a la fábrica de tejidos Simões, el mayor empresario de la zona. La fábrica cerró en la década de los 70 (por aquel entonces el barrio se había dividido en dos, el distrito de Benfica y el de São Domingos de Benfica) y durante la década siguiente, se convirtió en una obligación social para las familias acomodadas poseer un apartamento en la Estrada de Benfica o en la Avenida Gomes Pereira. Ese fue su pasado glorioso. Y desde los años 90, Benfica se ha ido alejando del resto de la ciudad. Sus calles principales, llenas de baches, cuentan la historia del abandono municipal al igual que la escasez de transporte público. La población del barrio ha disminuido de 50.000 habitantes en 1990 a unos 42.000 hoy en día. El Benfica marchito y poco prometedor se ha convertido en una de las viejas glorias de la ciudad.
Benfica, it said, “lives today in harmony between the old and the modern, the rural and the urban.” That raised some eyebrows among Lisbonites, many of whom dismissed it as marketing speak, designed to attract tourists. But what if it wasn’t such an exaggeration? After all, modern elements coexist with the old (and the plainly outdated) all over the country. Yet, what is happening in Benfica is a somewhat different story. At the beginning of the 20th century, Benfica formed a working-class village around the Simões knitting factory, the area’s biggest employer. The factory closed in the 1970s (by which time the area had split in two, into the parishes of Benfica and São Domingos de Benfica), and for the next decade or so, it was a social obligation for a wealthy family to have an apartment at Estrada de Benfica or Avenida Gomes Pereira. That is the glorious past. Since the 1990s, Benfica has drifted away from the rest of the city. Its main roads, full of potholes, tell tales of municipal abandonment; so

Entonces ¿qué es lo que está atenuando este sombrío escenario? Algo muy sencillo: la iniciativa. Frente al profundo retroceso económico (y a pesar de que Colombo, el centro comercial más grande de Portugal está a la vuelta de la esquina) la gente ha estado invirtiendo en nuevos negocios: tiendas que venden productos para gourmets sofisticadas boutiques y cafés tradicionales con apariencia renovada. Este es el espíritu que está volviendo a situar a Benfica en el mapa. Luís Sousa, de 49 años, es el encargado del Califa, una pastelería y restaurante que ha sido casi una leyenda local durante más de 40 años. En su opinión, “Benfica está repleta de apartamentos y oficinas y, por lo tanto, retumba de actividad. Tener un negocio aquí es estupendo”. Tratándose de un negocio familiar, Califa siempre ha honrado las tradiciones. La guía Time Out Lisbon consideró su tarta Bolo Rei como la mejor de la ciudad. In the face of a severe economic downturn (and even though Colombo, Portugal’s largest shopping centre, is located just around the corner), people have been investing in new businesses: shops selling gourmet products, sophisticated boutiques and traditional cafés with a renewed appearance. It is this spirit that’s getting Benfica back on the map. 49-year-old Luís Sousa is the manager of Califa, a pastry shop and restaurant that has been something of a local legend for over 40 years. He believes that Benfica “is full of apartments and offices and, therefore, buzzes with activity. It is great to have a business here.” As a family business, Califa has always honoured traditions. Time Out Lisbon magazine declared its Bolo Rei cake to be the best in town. The place is so well-known

La última vez que comí en un restaurante romano me dio por meditar sobre la relación de los italianos con la comida y, mientras observaba al resto de comensales, anoté algunas reflexiones en una servilleta que todavía conservo: la fábula de Caperucita Roja, sobre la que se sustenta gran parte de la cultura europea, implanta la idea de que el bosque (símbolo del oscurantismo de la Edad Media) es un lugar peligroso, mientras que el pueblo (la Edad Moderna), uno bien seguro. Por contra, la leyenda de Rómulo y Remo, fundadores de Roma, muestra a dos niños que, amamantados por una loba, crecen lo suficientemente fuertes como para montar un Imperio. Por tanto, mientras el resto de Europa vive atemorizada ante la posibilidad de un mundo lleno de lobos, los romanos agarran el pecho de esos mismos lobos y se alimentan de él. Así que ahora, sentado en este restaurante, levanto la mano y le digo al camarero que me traiga cualquier plato, pero que sea cien por cien romano.

Convinced that the only way to reflect objectively on such a relationship to food was to experience missing it, he left Italy and moved to southern England. He was found dead a few years later, having hung himself in his own room. His suicide note read: “I don’t know if Italian food ennobles the spirit, but I can confirm that the absence of it destroys the soul. Goodbye.”

En la Miscelánea Gastronómica de Schott hay un listado de películas que abordan el tema del canibalismo: El silencio de los corderos (1991), Delicatessen (1991), ¡Viven! (1993), Urban Flesh (1999) y muchas más. Pero sólo hay una italiana: Emmanuel y los últimos caníbales (1977). En dicha cinta, el inquietante director Joe D’Amato entremezclaba antropofagia con sexo. Las conclusiones que se pueden sacar de esto son tan evidentes que prefiero no escribirlas. Aunque de pronto me encuentro repasando las curvas de la camarera y pidiéndole que me traiga un buen pedazo de carne.

Al parecer, los niños obligan a sus mascotas a comer espaguetis, habiéndose dado casos de chavales que, empeñados en emular la clásica escena entre Golfo y Reina, han acabado matando a sus chuchos. Queriendo poner remedio a esta tendencia, el organismo antes citado lanzó hace algún tiempo una campaña publicitaria donde se explicaba a los niños -en verdad también a los padres- que sus mascotas debían comer comida de perro y no pasta a la boloñesa. According to a communiqué from the Confederation of Veterinarians of Italy, every time the cartoon Lady and the Tramp came on TV, there was a higher incidence of dogs choking. Apparently, children make their dogs eat spaghetti. There have even been cases of kids who, keen to emulate the romantic scene between Lady and the Tramp, actually ended up killing their poor pups. As a means to remedy this epidemic, the organisation launched an advertising campaign that explained to children – and to their parents, let’s be honest – that their dogs should eat only dog food, not spaghetti Bolognese.

At the end of the press release, they added one of the funniest things ever written in the History of Canine Literature: “In the real world, it is very unlikely that a dog will fall in love with another dog thanks to a plate of pasta.” But here’s a fact: the dogs in Rome wag their tales when they walk past the restaurant terrace I’m sitting at.
