Nosotros somos ya verdaderos especialistas en sacar a algunas clientas por la puerta de atrás, para evitar a los paparazzi. Intentamos que cada persona se sienta estrella por un día. Confesaré algo que me hizo especial ilusión: un verano recibí una misteriosa llamada para que fuera a peinar a una clienta en su residencia de La Moraleja. No me dijeron su nombre. We have become real specialists at getting clients out through the back door, to avoid the paparazzi. We try to make everybody feel like a star for a day. Un bocadillo de calamares, una bolsa de patatas, un trozo de pizza… A pesar del frío, cualquier cosa vale para llenar el estómago en el barrio nocturno por excelencia de Madrid, Malasaña. A calamari sandwich, a bag of crisps, a piece of pizza… Despite the cold, anything will do to fill your belly on a night out in Madrid’s hotspot, Malasaña.
Lorena Fernández, 24 años Estoy comiendo unas Ruff les porque por las noches, cuando salgo, me entra siempre mucha hambre. Las he comprado en un chino de Malasaña que abre hasta las tantas. Estoy con unos colegas de bar en bar. Haremos lo de siempre, ir a tomar algo por ahí. Lo que más nos gusta de Malasaña es sobre todo la variedad de la gente que te encuentras. Lorena Fernández, 24 I’m scarfing some Ruffles crisps because whenever I go out at night I always get really hungry. I bought them in a Chinese shop that is open until late. I’m going from bar to bar with some friends. We’ll probably do what we always do and have a drink around here. What we like most about Malasaña is the variety of people you get to meet.

Venimos ahora del Réquiem, en la sala Sideral y vamos a una cervecería que se llama Moscú y está un poco más abajo. Antes salíamos más por la zona de Sol, pero últimamente siempre venimos por Malasaña. Alexander Gavela, 19 Wandering from bar to bar you always get a bit peckish. I’m not starving but I fancied a cheese and salad sandwich. We’ve just come from the Réquiem night at the Sideral club and we’re heading to a pub called Moscú, which is a bit further down. We used to go out around the Sol area but recently we’ve been hanging out in Malasaña a lot.

Suelo dar vueltas por Madrid y uno de mis barrios preferidos es La Latina. Fabrizio Sala, 24 I’m Italian and I’m eating a ham and cheese calzone pizza. I don’t normally choose to eat in the street but tonight that’s just what happened. I prefer to have a nice meal at home. When we’re done we’re going to see a flamenco concert around the corner from here. I don’t normally come to Malasaña; I usually go out all over Madrid. One of my favourite areas is La Latina.

Nos vemos muy de vez en cuando, así que hoy tenemos que repasar los últimos meses y, para eso, necesitamos tiempo y tranquilidad. Marina GarcÍa, 17 I’ve chosen a ham and cheese pizza from Pizza&Pita, on calle Fuencarral. It’s my favourite. There wasn’t enough room inside to sit down, not even a single free chair, because everyone was watching the football match. We came outside so we could actually hear ourselves think. I’m with a friend from summer camp and we don’t get to see each other very often so we wanted a bit of time and space to catch up.

I know it’s weird but I’m actually eating strawberry cheesecake-flavoured ice-cream because I’ve just come out of the food place… and it was much warmer in there! I’m meeting up with a few friends and we’re going out tonight. We’re going to drink sangria and we’ll probably end up dancing the night away in some club in the area.

I thought I’d take the opportunity to catch up with a few mates. It’s not the first time I’ve been to Madrid (I come a few times a year), but it is the first time I’ve ever had a calamari sandwich. I bought it in a bar at plaza Mayor. Tonight we’ll be drinking a fair few beers in the area around plaza del Sol.

“Es extraño haber conocido a tu héroe. Yo tuve la suerte de conocer a Henry. En 1962 organicé en Edimburgo una conferencia de escritores con John Calder y Sonia Orwell. Hice una fiesta y Henry también asistió. Él era el héroe de todos los presentes; los otros escritores eran auténticos admiradores suyos. Norman Mailer, William Burroughs, todos lo afirmaron. Pero él era tan humilde.. Se trataba de un individuo increíblemente tierno y positivo. Pasé un día con él en un barrio de Los Ángeles. Estaba muy cerca del final de su vida y sobre lo que más le apetecía hablar, cosa que me pareció asombroso, era de París, sobre todo de los distritos 14 y 15. Le encantaban esas zonas y estuvo indagando mucho sobre ellas. Por supuesto, me gustaría llevarle a aquellos lugares que le apasionaban. Algunos siguen casi intactos, como la brasserie Zeyer (234, avenue du Maine) y la más modesta Bouquest d’Alesia (75, avenue du Général Leclerc) justo al otro lado de la calle. Incluso aquel antiguo urinario, que a Henry le encantaba, sigue en el Boulevard Arago y los taxistas aún se paran allí para utilizarlo. Pasearíamos por las hermosas calles de Alesia, rue de la Tombe Issoire; que también le resultarían tremendamente familiares. Le llevaría a la Villa Seurat donde vivió y al Parc Montsouris (RER station: Cité Universitaire) porque tengo la sospecha de que le encantaría la paz y la belleza del lugar. Por último cenaríamos en el Auberge Des Trois Saveurs (82, rue Hallé, 75014), un restaurante vietnamita dirigido por un matrimonio encantador: Michel cocina y Hélène atiende las mesas. “It’s rare that you know your hero. I was lucky enough to know Henry. I organised a writers’ conference in Edinburgh in 1962, with John Calder and Sonia Orwell. I organised a party and Henry came. He was the hero of everyone there, all the other writers were big fans, and they said so – Norman Mailer, William Burroughs, they all said so. Yet he was so humble about it all. He was just an amazingly gentle and positive individual. I spent a day with him once in a suburb of L.A. It was very close to the end of his life, and the main thing he wanted to talk about, which I found amazing, was Paris. The 14th and 15th arrondisements above all. He liked these areas very much, and he picked my brains about them. So of course I’d like to take him back to those places he loved so well. A few are still much the same. Like the brasserie Zeyer (234, avenue du Maine) and the more modest Bouquest d’Alesia (75, avenue du Général Leclerc) just across the street. Even that old pissoir that Henry loved is still there on the Boulevard Arago – and the taxi drivers still stop to use it. We’d walk the beautiful streets around Alesia, rue de la Tombe Issoire; these he’d also find pretty familiar. Now that the city is sleeping and the only remaining light comes from a flickering candle, I let myself go to the sound of my beloved Neil Hannon. I’d listen to him in the cemetery on Montjuïc, between Gothic mausoleums and cypress trees.

Vuelvo a mi niñez y parece que me voy a dormir plácidamente, pero el lejano eco del canto de una sirena me desvela otra vez. Es el inconveniente de vivir en una gran ciudad como Barcelona. I go back to my childhood and I feel like I might be able to sleep like a baby, but the distant echo of the voice of a siren wakes me up again. That’s the inconvenient thing about living in a big city like Barcelona.

2. GRAM PARSONS - A Song for You
Esta canción es la que escucho al llegar al hotel después de un concierto de Sidonie. Es una canción de viaje y me la imagino sonando en mi coche mientras salgo por la Gran Vía de Barcelona. This is the song I listen to when we get to the hotel after a Sidonie concert. It’s a traveller’s song and I imagine it playing in my car while I’m on the Gran Via heading out of Barcelona.
3. DONOVAN - Sand and Foam
Donovan es un buen compañero de viaje en las autopistas de mi imaginación. Con él, hacemos auto-stop en la Meridiana, sujetando un cartel de cartón con el nombre de una ciudad que no existe escrito. Donovan is a good travel companion on the motorways of my imagination. With him, I can hitch-hike on the Meridiana road, with a cardboard sign in my hand asking for a destination that doesn’t exist.

Uno tiende a pensar que es el único que está despierto y esto provoca un sentimiento de soledad. Mina es la cura para todos mis males y me imagino escuchándola en la Carretera de les Aigües un día de invierno. You tend to think you’re the only person awake, and that can feel pretty lonely. Mina is the cure to all my ailments and I imagine listening to her on the Carretera de les Aigües on a winter day.
5. NICO - The Fairest of the Seasons
A través de la cortina entran los primeros rayos de sol en mi piso de Poble Nou. El sonido de la ciudad empieza a aumentar, pero yo estoy tan concentrado en su voz metálica y grave que no puedo oír nada más. Through the curtains, the first rays of sunlight enter my flat in Poble Nou. The sounds of the city start to get louder, but I’m so fixated on Nico’s deep, metallic voice that I can hear nothing else.

Decía Robbie Robertson que esta canción la compuso en la habitación contigua a la de su hijo pequeño mientras éste dormía. Tenía que tocar muy bajo y susurrar la melodía para no despertarlo. Así de delicada la grabó The Band, y yo me quedo dormido. Robbie Robertson said that he composed this song while his little son was asleep next door. He had to play it really quietly and whisper the melody so as not to wake him. The Band recorded it just like that, and I fall asleep.

Para la película, queríamos recrear una barriada anónima que pudiese pertenecer al extrarradio de cualquier gran ciudad; y Barcelona era un lugar tan bueno como cualquier otro. Despersonalizar un escenario de película es un trabajo difícil en el que los equipos de localización y dirección artística tienen que trabajar codo con codo. Primero, hay que escoger sitios que no tengan unas características muy reconocibles y después, hacer una especie de corta y pega a partir de varias localizaciones. En Poble Nou está el local ACME (Pujades, 135), uno de los emplazamientos centrales del film. En él transcurren momentos claves, como cuando El Cuajo tiene que bajar las escaleras que conectan el local con la parada del autobús -una metáfora de barcelona barcelona las dificultades y limitaciones que tiene que superar en su vida. Al lado, también encontramos el Restaurante García (Pujades, 133), una antigua y carismática casa de comidas de toda la vida que convertimos en el Doner Kebab. Un poco más al norte, en la Verneda, localizamos el típico parquecito de barrio que sirve como punto de reunión, ocio y trapicheo de los protagonistas (Plaza Conxita Badia). La tienda de música es Microfusa (Sepúlveda, 135), un lugar donde los amantes del hip-hop y la electrónica pueden comprar sus “cacharros”. En Bellvitge está el Bar Marquitos que, en realidad, se llama Bar la Menta (Rambla Marina, 287). Para recrear los escenarios un poco más “duros” fuimos al barrio de La Catalana, junto a la Mina, en Sant Adriá del Besós. Allí recreamos el ambiente más marginal de los yonquis y las casitas bajas. Pero ese lugar ha mejorado muchísimo en los últimos años y, por suerte, no tuvimos ningún problema durante el rodaje.”

Starring: Juan Manuel Montilla “Langui”, Ovono Candela, Javier Iglesias “Gordo”, Elio Toffana, Fanny Gatibelza. “El Truco del Manco tells the story of Enrique Heredia, alias ‘El Cuajo’, a local go-getter who is partially paralysed. El Cuajo pursues his passion for music while confronting the difficulties posed by his condition and his surroundings, a marginalised part of town. For the film, we wanted to recreate an anonymous area that could be the outskirts of any city, and Barcelona was as good a place as any. Depersonalising a location is hard work: the location and art direction teams have to work closely together. First, you have to choose places that don’t have recognisable characteristics, and then you have to do a kind of cut and paste from one location to the next. In Poble Nou, there is the ACME centre (Pujades, 135), one of the central places in the film where lots of key moments happen, like when El Cuajo has to go down the stairs to get to the bus stop, a metaphor for the limitations and difficulties he has to overcome in life. Right next door is the Restaurante García (Pujades, 133), an old and charismatic lunch place that we turned into a kebab house. A bit further north, in Verneda, we found a typical little neighbourhood park that acts as a meeting point for the main characters to hang out and do their wheeling and dealing (Plaça Conxita Badia). The record shop is Microfusa (Sepúlveda, 135) a fantastic place where hip-hop and electronica fanatics can buy their ‘wares’. In Bellvitge there is the Bar Marquitos, which in real life is called Bar la Menta (Rambla Marina, 287). To recreate the slightly ‘harder’ scenes we went to the La Catalana district, near La Mina, in Sant Adriá del Besós. We recreated a kind of ghetto feel there, with drug addicts and small houses. The area has improved a lot though, and luckily we didn’t have any problems during filming.”

La libertad de expresión es una obligación social, un concepto natural y un derecho humano. Debemos tener el valor de expresar lo que pensamos. Si únicamente dijéramos lo que los otros -o “los poderosos”- quieren oír, nadie llegaría a ningún sitio. Cuando digo “poder”, me refiero a un concepto amplio. El poder puede ser la industria, que comunica la venta de un producto; puede ser la política; puede ser la revolución; puede tratarse de la Iglesia. De hecho, la Iglesia católica es el ejemplo perfecto de una empresa publicitaria de éxito. Se comunica mediante la forma de expresión más elevada, el arte. Y ha contratado a los mejores artistas de todos los tiempos: Miguel Ángel y Bernini participaron en las campañas de la Iglesia. Un publicista es alguien que anuncia algo al público y creo que artistas como Miguel Ángel pueden ser considerados publicistas en este sentido. Para mí, la belleza es aquello que me gusta. No hay mucho más que decir al respecto. Es un concepto subjetivo, pero lo importante es que no debo tener miedo ni sentirme avergonzado por demostrar lo que me gusta y a lo que me dedico. La fotografía es una herramienta muy poderosa. Una única instantánea puede ser más poderosa que un ejército. La fotografía es la imagen de la humanidad. En ella, somos lo que somos: el abuelo siempre será viejo porque recordamos la última fotografía que se hizo. La historia, tal como la conocemos hoy, existe desde el nacimiento de la fotografía, ya que todo lo que ocurrió con anterioridad son tan sólo palabras. No me gusta la palabra “provocación” porque la sociedad la pronuncia con un significado moralista. ¿Lo provocador es algo que te escandaliza? Bueno, yo me escandalizo cada mañana cuando abro el periódico y leo lo que está pasando en el mundo. Provocar también significa “causar” y, en ese sentido, sí, yo provoco. Provoco interés, sorpresa, nuevas energías, amor o cultura. A la gente que considera que creo controversia por las ganancias comerciales les diría que pueden decir lo que les parezca. No estoy aquí para escuchar a los críticos. ¿Trabajo por motivos comerciales? Bueno, los libros se escriben para ser vendidos. Mozart es el músico más comercial de la historia. Picasso fue el artista mejor pagado del siglo pasado. Dejad hablar a los críticos: no saben hacer otra cosa.
Freedom of speech is a social duty, a natural concept and a human right. We must have the courage to say what we think. If we say only what others –or “the powerful”– want to hear, no one will ever get anywhere. When I say “power”, I am referring to an extended concept of power. Power can be industry, which communicates to sell a product; it can be politics; it can be the revolution; it can be the Church. In fact, the Catholic Church is a perfect example of a successful advertising company. They produce communication using its highest expression: art. And they hired the best artists around: Michelangelo and Bernini both participated in the church’s campaigns. An advertiser is someone who advertises something publicly, and I think artists like Michelangelo can be regarded as advertisers in that sense. Beauty, for me, is whatever I like. There’s not much else to say about it. It’s a subjective concept, but what’s important is that I shouldn’t be scared or ashamed to show what I like and what I do. Photography is a very powerful tool. A single image can be more powerful than a whole army. Photography is the image of mankind. We are what we are in a picture: grandpa will always be old because we remember the last picture taken of him. History as we know it today exists since the birth of photography, as all that happened before is just words. I don’t like the word “provocation”, because society pronounces it with a moralistic significance. So you

are shocked? Well, I am shocked every morning when I open the paper and read what’s going on in the world. To provoke also means “to cause”, and in that sense it’s true, I provoke. I provoke interest, surprise, new energy, love, culture. To people who think I create controversy for commercial gain, I reply that they can say whatever they want! So I work for commercial reasons? Books are written to be sold. Mozart is the most commercial musician in history. Picasso was the best-paid artist of the past century. Let the critics talk: they don’t know how to do anything else.

OLIVIERO TOSCANI es un fotógrafo de publicidad italiano que se hizo famoso alrededor del mundo en los años 80 por sus controvertidas campañas para Benetton: una monja dando un beso a un cura, un enfermo terminal de SIDA y condenados a pena de muerte fueron algunas de sus imágenes más criticadas. En 1991 fundó la revista Colors junto el diseñador gráfico Tibor Kalman. Hoy Toscani da talleres de creatividad para gente joven en La Sterpaia, un centro de inovación cultural que cofundó en La Toscana. OLIVIERO TOSCANI is an Italian advertising photographer who met worldwide fame and notoriety in the 1980s with his controversial campaigns for Benetton: a nun kissing a priest, a terminal AIDS patient and death-row prisoners were among his most criticised images. In 1991 he founded the magazine Colors together with the late graphic designer Tibor Kalman. Today Toscani runs creativity workshops for young people at La Sterpaia, a centre of cultural innovation he co-founded in Tuscany.

EL RETORNO Escribe Mayer Aramburu
Llevaba tres semanas instalada en Benedetto Croce, la calle de la casa de Andrea, el napolitano al que conocí en el último viaje con Soledad. Cuando ella volvió a Barcelona, le anuncié que me quedaba con él. En realidad, no lo creía ni por asomo. Pero al cabo de los días, la idea se me hizo realmente posible. Podía ser el cambio de vida que tanto anhelaba. Sólo que… Sabía que Soledad me desheredaría por ello (yo seguía creyendo en ese momento en el que el albacea pronunciase: “Para Mayer Aramburu, los Jeff Koons”). Ella no andaba muy bien de salud. Diablos, Barcelona es mi ciudad, para bien o para mal. Empezaba a echar de menos no lo amado, sino todo lo que odiaba. Sentada en el viejo sofá de la galería, observo a Andrea mientras repara la pata de una silla. Después miro mis pies, con pedicura cereza vernis Chanel. No se puede tener todo en esta maldita vida. Suena el teléfono. Soledad. No he atendido sus llamadas en días, pero no se inmuta al oír mi “Pronto!”. -Mayer, tu pequeño ‘affaire’ resulta adorable, pero este viernes son las negociaciones del ‘shaped canvas’ de Elsworth Kelly, y no quiero fallos. Tienes un billete a tu nombre. No me hagas llamar al Solucionador. Cuelgo sin pronunciar palabra, y mi cara explica a Andrea todo lo que necesita saber. Le cuento. -¿Quién es el Solucionador? -Un viejo amigo de Soledad. Imagina una mezcla del Señor Lobo, más Sophia Petrillo, la vieja de Las chicas de oro… más cualquier secundario de Snatch. -Me gusta esa película –sonríe, y aguanta mi mirada. -A mí también. “Ze Germans” –cojo su mano y me apoyo en su hombro. Esto ya es nuestro para siempre –y aprieta mi mano con fuerza. Llego el jueves a Barcelona. Un día cálido, de primavera precoz. Ya en la cola de los taxis, reconozco a lo lejos el Jaguar de Soledad. Tras los cristales ahumados sé que

estará ella, con su mirada, su media melena canosa y perfecta, el sencillo jersey de ‘cashmere’ de Malo, el libro de Sedaris a medio leer en el Kelly. Camino hacia el coche, no sin descartar cualquier posible ‘gag’ que me tenga preparado: que el coche salga corriendo, que haya enviado a una enana caracterizada de Soledad; que cuando abra la ventanilla salgan volando globos de helio con forma de tulipán Koons, siempre Koons. Pero abro la puerta trasera, y no sucede nada raro. Está Soledad, un poco más cansada y vieja que cuando la dejé en Nápoles, y lleva en su regazo al paciente carlino Beuys, que también me mira mientras resuella. -Mi pequeña Mayer Aramburu, bienvenida a casa. -Soledad –empiezo, pero no sé qué decir. Tomo asiento a su lado, y me hace callar con un gesto levísimo. -Vamos a comer – le digo finalmente –. Yo invito. Un gallego. Tengo antojo de pulpo y almeixas. ¿Se le ocurre algún lugar propicio? – Soledad, como siempre, tiene la respuesta perfecta. -Vamos a mi preferido, en la calle Urgell: O’Retorno. A constellation is not a physical concept; it depends on

Cuando Granada era Garnata al-Yahud, El Realejo se estableció como arrabal judío de la ciudad musulmana. Pocos vestigios quedan ya aparte de la zona alta, plagada de callejuelas e intrincados callejones escalonados de luz perpetua. Amadrinado por Mariana Pineda y la plaza que lleva su nombre en uno de sus frentes, el más cercano a la Carrera de la Virgen, y apadrinado por Yehuda Ibn Tibon (sumo patrón de los traductores) si lo embocamos desde la Gran Vía, El Realejo se muestra como un barrio repleto de compromiso y lenguas. Una gran familia mestiza y bien avenida, receptiva y acogedora de hijos pródigos y adoptados de vocación. Un barrio vertebrado entorno al idioma universal del agua y la tinta china, que rebosa por cada una de sus porosas arterias ganas de ser vivido y bebido. Un mundo sumergido y epidérmico de muros y paredes que hablan con voz propia, como la fachada de la Iglesia de Santo Domingo, trampantojo de ocres arquitecturas pasadas. Pero el presente que nos ocupa nos introduce a ventrílocuos paganos de estos mismos muros, que desde lo efímero del spray intentan que la lengua de los ladrillos y el adobe siga viva. El Niño de las Pinturas es el máximo exponente de esta nueva tradición, ya clásica, de El Realejo, y revitalizador de punta a cabo de las tapias mudas de las calles del barrio. Un paseo de la mano de sus pinceles es tomar prestada la paleta de esencias y matices que definen este conjunto abierto de personas y calles.
When Granada was Garnata al-Yahud, the Realejo was the Muslim city’s Jewish Quarter. Few vestiges remain apart from a hilly area full of narrow streets and intertwining, sun-dappled alleys. Mariana Pineda, who fought for the liberal cause in the 19th century, is its godmother and the square bearing her name sits along one of its borders, the one closest to the Carrera de la Virgen. Its godfather is Yehuda Ibn Tibon, the patron of translators, and upon entering the Realejo from Gran Vía, we find ourselves in a deeply engaged community that speaks many languages. A big, mixed and harmonious family, open and welcoming of its prodigal and adoptive children. It’s a neighbourhood built upon the universal language of water and China ink, a lust for life coursing through every single one of its porous veins, inviting you to drink it all in. Our here and now introduces us to pagan ventriloquists who attempt to keep the language of brick and mortar alive through the fleeting voice of spray paint. El Niño de las Pinturas is the main exponent of this new, but by now classic, tradition of the Realejo. He is a revitalising force of the quarter’s muted walls. His paint-

Con él vamos desgranando pared a pared los rincones más escondidos, desde el Lavadero hasta el molino de la Acequia Gorda, pasando por las Torres Bermejas. Sus pinturas no sólo decoran sino que narran los días y las noches de hostales y hoteles como el Hotel Molinos. Sirven de barandilla de las escaleras que nos llevan hasta la oficina y cuartel general de la gente del Candela, reducto de artistas y parroquianos. “Este es un barrio con mucho arte”, nos repiten una y otra vez los clientes. Aquí el tiempo se detiene en cada sorbo de vermú y la vida se entretiene cabalgando en un trozo de pan tostado. Las pinturas del Niño son el menú vegetariano de restaurantes como Hicuri y el papel de estraza que envuelve cuidadosamente las viandas de la carnicería de Diego. En nuestro camino nos cruzamos con legiones de forasteros sin norte que, como un nervioso banco de peces, se dirigen hacia la Escuela de Lenguas Modernas. Este centro se ha establecido como el dinamizador absoluto de la multiculturalidad del barrio. “Todos aprendemos de todos”, nos comenta una vecina al verlos pasar. Y aquí vemos el auténtico carácter acogedor del vecindario. La mezcla de acentos volando como cometas sin cordel compone una estela de retazos de otros continentes y latitudes.

We follow him into hidden corners, exploring them wall by wall, brick by brick, from the Lavadero to the mill on Acequia Gorda to the Torres Bermejas. His paintings are more than mere adornment; they tell stories of the days and nights at joints like the Hotel Molinos. Like the railing along a staircase, they take us to the office and headquarters of the neighbourhood denizens, a refuge for artists and locals called Candela. “This neighbourhood’s full of art,” the customers tell us again and again. Here time stands still with every sip of vermouth, and life playfully traces its course over pieces of toast. El Niño’s paintings are the vegetarian menu at restaurants like Hicuri and the rag paper carefully wrapped around the food at Diego’s butcher’s shop. Along the way we run into legions of wandering foreigners, who, much like a nervous school of fish, are heading towards the Academy of Modern Languages. The centre has established itself as the most dynamic

Un poco más adelante se nos presenta la otra vía principal, la calle Molinos, antiguo camino de molinos de agua de los que aún puede intuirse el roce de la piedra al moler. Nos encauzamos desde aquí hasta el auténtico epicentro de la vida de estas aceras, el Campo del Príncipe. Esta zona es el hábitat natural del Niño, que va pulverizando sus fachadas con gotas de historia reciente y consciencia. Gotas que dejan su impronta y luce con orgullo en cada una de las prendas que viste. En esta calle es imprescindible, nos dice, pagar el peaje de las “salaillas” de la Conchi, buque insignia de las panaderías del barrio y hada madrina de las salsas de cualquier plato. El Campo del Príncipe es un pulmón de alvéolos verdes construido por encargo de reyes y custodiado por el impertérrito Cristo de los Favores. Between the artists of the neighbourhood there is a sense of closeness and mutual support, both so necessary in their trade

This street, he tells us, cannot be crossed without paying a special toll in ‘salaillas’ (savoury pastry sprinkled with sea salt) at Conchi’s, the flagship of neighbourhood bakeries. The Campo del Príncipe is an urban lung of leafy hollows, built by royal commission and watched over by the fearless statue of the Cristo de los Favores. It is a

Por sus calles Raúl nos presenta a otros artistas como María de la Rosa Soriano, “Pasaros por mi exposición”, nos propone, “pero antes nos tomamos un cafelito”. Se respira entre ellos la cercanía y el apoyo mutuo, tan necesarios en su gremio, y que se hace extensible a todos los que habitan estas calles. Nos despedimos del Niño de las Pinturas y al verlo marchar vemos irse a un caracol con su escafandra repleta de colores, dejando tras de sí un reguero de viscosos e insinuantes trazos de historia.

Raúl introduces us to other artists like Maria de la Rosa Soriano. “Come by my exhibition,” she suggests, “but let’s have a coffee first.” A sense of closeness and mutual support, so necessary in their trade, is palpable between them and all those who live along these streets. We say goodbye to El Niño de las Pinturas and as he leaves, it is like watching a snail with a colourful shell, leaving a trail of viscous and suggestive strokes of history in his wake.

Habíamos recorrido el Museé d´Orsey juntos, y yo había sostenido su paraguas varias veces, si el clima no ayudaba, mientras caminábamos por la Rue de Rivoli yendo al cine. Quedamos en encontrarnos en Milano hacia el fin de semana y me acuerdo que tomé el tren en una Roma Termini llena de gente que se iba de vacaciones. La imponente Stazione Centrale di Milano, sin embargo, estaba vacía. Después de dar unas vueltas, pude llegar a un hostal cuyo ambiente –camas marineras y paredes decoradas con cuadros de montañistas riendo– me resultó un poco ajeno. Era jueves por la tarde. Margarita llegaba desde Torino el domingo por la mañana. Aceptando mi condición de turista, me fui directamente a ver la restauración de La Última Cena. Pero si los milaneses estaban en la playa o en la montaña, los turistas japoneses, parecidos a robots, y los australianos, inevitablemente vestidos con sandalias, bermudas y camisetas playeras de colores fluorescentes, formaban una compacta cola, ansiosos por admirar la obra de Leonardo. Me aburrí y me fui. Comparadas con las calles de Firenze o Roma, ni comentar Venecia, las calles de Milán me resultaron despojadas, casi industriales y, por eso, profundamente italianas. Al mismo tiempo, cuatro de cada cinco comercios estaban cerrados, con la persianas bajas, y algunos tenían incluso un cartel que decía que los dueños, los empleados y también seguramente los clientes se habían tomado vacaciones. Por supuesto, Il Duomo me sorprendió. Lo disfruté mucho, como un juguete caro, la forma más simple de adorar a Dios. Después, casi por azar, me senté en las mesas que un café tenía sobre la calle. Pedí un granizado de fresa. El día había sido largo y no tenía intenciones de volver al hostal. Me resultó agradable sentarme cuando el sol estaba todavía fuerte y, sin moverme, ver como el día iba pasando y la tarde calurosa se transformaba en la noche, más fresca. Tuve la tentación de recorrer algunos bares, pero por la época no había mucha oferta o no los supe encontrar. Así que me fui a dormir temprano.
In 1997 I travelled around Germany and France, and only after what I believed to be a veritable trip of intellectual initiation, did I arrive in Rome. Spring had passed, and the simple and sweltering heat of Italian summers had begun. One morning I spoke to Margarita. Maragarita was from Turin and I had been introduced to her in a Vidéothèque in Paris. We had toured the Musée d’Orsay together, and I had carried her umbrella on a few occasions, when the weather was undesirable, as we walked down the rue de Rivoli on our way to the cinema. We had arranged to meet in Milan for the weekend and I remember taking the train at a Roma Termini full of people setting out on holiday. The imposing Stazione Centrale di Milano, however, was empty. After walking around for a while I managed to find a hostel. The ambience – bunk beds and walls adorned with pictures of smiling mountain walkers – felt a little odd. It was Thursday afternoon. Margarita was to arrive from Turin on Sunday morning. Accepting my fate as a tourist, I headed straight for the restoration of The Last Supper. But if all the Milanese had departed the city in search of sun and sea or mountain cool, the hoards of Japanese tourists, moving like robots, and Australians, in sandals, Bermuda shorts and brightly coloured beach shirts, inevitably formed an interminable queue, anxious to admire Leonardo’s work. I got bored of waiting and left. Compared to the streets of Florence or Rome, not to mention Venice, the streets of Milan seemed stripped, almost industrial, and for that reason, profoundly Italian. At the same time, almost four out of five shops were closed, shutters down, and some even had a little sign saying that the owners, employees and most probably their customers too, were on holiday.

El viernes, después de comprar en Ricordi la partitura del Concierto en Si menor para flauta y clave de Bach, y encontrar en una librería muy coqueta un libro con fotografías de rinocerontes, volví al café del granizado. Tome uno, dos, tres. Siempre ‘di fragola’. Se me acercó el mozo. Me contó que el granizado era un postre siciliano. ¿Ya había estado yo en Sicilia? Allá el granizado era muy diferente. Él era napolitano. Vivía en Milán, una ciudad que le gustaba poco, por trabajo. El sábado volví a pedir el granizado en las mesas de la calle. Desde ahí vi a un grupo de árabes en una esquina. Parecían uniformados con ropa deportiva cara, sus zapatillas brillantes y llamativas y cadenas de oro en el cuello. Se reían, se saludaban. No esperaban a nadie y esperaban a todo el mundo al mismo tiempo. Los envidié. El domingo Margarita me dejó un mensaje en el hostal. Cuando hablé con ella, me explicó que se iba a demorar dos días más. No le dije que ya había sacado mi billete de vuelta a Buenos Aires. El viaje había terminado y me tocaba regresar. Nunca más probé el granizado de fresa, pero cuando me hablan de Milán pienso en largos días de calor agobiante, en una ciudad sin gente, y el frío dulce, helado, de esa merecida pausa para el viajero que, aunque no esté perdido, a veces se siente demasiado lejos de sí mismo.
Of course Il Duomo was astounding. I enjoyed it immensely, like an expensive toy, the simplest way to worship God. Afterwards, almost by chance, I sat down at a pavement table outside a café. I ordered a granita, an iced-strawberry drink. The day had been long and I had no intention of returning to the hostal yet. It felt good to sit in the blaring sun, and watch, motionless, how the world passed me by and how the hot afternoon turned into cool night. I was tempted to tour a few bars, but at that time of the year not much was happening and I didn’t find any. So I decided to have an early night. Friday came, and after going to Ricordi to buy the sheet music to Bach’s Concerto for flute and harpsichord in B minor, and finding a book with pictures of rhinoceroses in a very coquette bookshop, I went back to the café with the crushed-ice drinks. I had one, two, three. Always ‘di fragola’. The waiter approached me. He explained that the ‘granita’ was a Sicilian dessert. Had I been to Sicily? There, the iced drinks were very different. He was from Naples. He lived in Milan, a city he was not fond of, for work reasons. On Saturday, I ordered the granita again in the street café. I could see a group of Arabs on the corner. They looked like they were wearing their own kind of uniform: expensive sports clothes, shiny new trainers and flashy gold chains around their necks. They laughed and chatted. They were waiting for no-one and yet waiting for everyone at the same time. I envied them. On Sunday, Margarita left me a message at the hostel. When I spoke to her she explained that she had to postpone her arrival for another two days. I didn’t tell her that I had already bought my ticket to Buenos Aires. My trip was over and I had to go back. I never tried strawberry granita again, but whenever anyone mentions Milan I think of long sweltering days, in a city empty of people and the cold, sweet crushed ice, of that welcome break for any traveller, who although he is not lost, sometimes feels too far away from himself.
