HOPPE Offers A Helping Hand To Make CE Marking As Easy As A, B, C Thanks To The ARRONE AR915 With CE Marking of external doorsets, including emergency escape doorsets, now compulsory, HOPPE is on hand to offer advice. Andy Matthews, HOPPE’s National Sales & Marketing Manager for the Architectural Division comments: “Everyone in the supply chain must now heed the legal requirements placed on them with the introduction of compulsory CE Marking. From July, any door assembly, completed on site, comprising of components from more than one source cannot be CE Marked as it is not covered by a harmonised standard. This rule applies even if those component parts – such as hinges, door closers, locks and glazing etc – are themselves individually CE Marked. “When it comes to compliance for external emergency exit door use, ask for a CE marked lockset to BS EN 179, and a Declaration of Performance (DoP) from your supplier. Even more simply, just select the ARRONE AR915 escape lock with one of our compatible HOPPE or ARRONE lever handles and AR228 spindle supplied as standard for your complete CE Marked Lockset. www.hoppe.co.uk Enquiry 10

Called the Pyramid Weep, it provides an aesthetically neutral way of removing water that permeates the structure. Chris Jones is the regional manager for Rothwell Plumbing Services based in its North East office just outside Newcastle: “Many of us were brought up through the heating and plumbing sector relying on Sentinel products – the X-range of liquid products in particular – X100 inhibitor and X400 and X800 cleaners - and as with most things in life, if it doesn’t let you down you develop a loyalty to it. We had been installing a competitor brand of system filter for a couple of years, since the use of filters really took off in a big way, but quite frankly had too many problems with it to feel comfortable. When the new “Eliminator” was launched by Sentinel, just knowing it was a Sentinel product gave us enough confidence to give it a sensible trial run, and very quickly we were getting feedback from the guys in our team that this was doing the business for us. Our rate of call backs was drastically reduced and so were reports of leaking filters. www.sentinel-solutions.net

Roofshield On Top Form At Duncairn The A. Proctor Group recently supplied their high specification pitched roof underlay, Roofshield, to D. Harkin & Co Roofing Contractors to renovate Duncairn Presbyterian Church into a Centre for Arts, Culture and Heritage. Roofshield has unique vapour and air permeability characteristics, which allows even the most complex of pitched roofs to breathe - without the need for traditional air gaps or secondary venting products. Roofshield is as easy to install as traditional roofing felt. The benefits provided by the high performance Roofshield membrane were obvious to the specifiers, Doherty Architects of Belfast. The very low vapour resistance of 0.09MNs/g combined with high air permeability reduces the potential for interstitial condensation as far as is possible, and without the requirement to use a vapour control layer, thus giving a robust and dependable solution that can be specified with confidence. www.proctorgroup.com Enquiry 48

Yorkon Increases School Capacity With Off-Site Construction A new two-storey teaching block for an expanding Leicestershire school completed by off-site construction specialist, Yorkon, a member of the Portakabin Group, has been described as an ‘iconic building’. One of the highest-performing state schools in Leicestershire, Martin High School in Anstey, is expanding from a middle school for 11-14 year olds to a secondary school, catering for 11-16 year olds. A new building was then needed to accommodate 50 per cent more pupils over the next two years. The new facility provides eight classrooms and 12 toilets. The Yorkon pre-installed high performance concrete floor has been used to deliver superior acoustics and a

robust finish for a demanding secondary school environment. Full height curtain walling to the entrance has created an impressive exterior and a combination of spandrel panels between floors, brickwork and cedar cladding give the scheme a distinctive and contemporary appearance. Off-site construction allowed the building to be delivered with much less disruption than a site-based solution and the modules were installed over a weekend. Martin High School’s Business Manager, Sue Plunkett, said, “There were a number of benefits to working with Yorkon, including the speed of construction and low level of disruption to a busy school environment. The finished building feels more like a

traditional construction rather than a facility built off site and we would be very happy to work with Yorkon again in the future.” “This was a new venture for the school and we have been very pleased with both the finished result and the construction process. The building is designed to make the most of the fantastic views from the windows of the nearby beauty spot, Bradgate Park. The design of the cladding blends in well with the countryside and we have created a truly iconic building for the school.” Yorkon has an extensive track record in the primary and secondary education sectors, having completed a wide variety of bespoke modular projects including self-contained teaching buildings, classroom extensions and complete schools, delivering all the speed, quality, sustainability and efficiency benefits of off-site construction. Following completion of this project on time and on budget, Yorkon has since been awarded its fourth academy project in the Midlands – a twostorey sixth form centre at Woodbrook Vale High School in Loughborough. www.yorkon.info Enquiry 51

Schöck Isokorb Proves Ideal For Velux Headquarters Building The industrial landscape leading out through the north eastern outskirts of Vienna is, perhaps surprisingly, a seemingly endless accumulation of dull unimaginative commercial buildings. Endless that is until you reach Wolkersdorf, some twelve miles away, where attention is drawn immediately to the Austrian Headquarters of Velux, the major Danish window and skylight company. Velux has been on this site for some 30 years and inevitably the original building had seen a number of modifications over that period. So the decision was taken to develop a completely new administrative facility, much more in keeping with the contemporary style of the company.

Photo supplied by Stefan Huger

Designed by architect Werner Zita, it is a building in stark contrast to what has gone before and draws on the local ambition to introduce more modern architectural styles to this otherwise traditional wine district area of Lower Austria. The unusual sloping roofs stand out immediately, and as Zita explains: “The linear layout of the building does not conform to any conventional right angles and is an attempt to reflect the undulating local landscape”.

Built on two levels, with 1750m2 of usable area, the new headquarters incorporates offices, showrooms and training rooms, with a car park underneath the structure. Critical to the design of the building is the Velux core concept of bringing fresh air and daylight into living and working spaces; so natural light floods into the building at every opportunity, helping to create a hospitable and friendly environment.

Preventing thermal bridging was a challenge The façade and roof are made from a titanium zinc outer shell and the varying textures are achieved through the use of longitudinal sectioning. An angled standing seam technique is used in the steep roof areas, with a horizontal open slat facade in the entrance areas and on vertical surfaces. Balconies are widely incorporated around the perimeter of the new Velux building and the prevention of thermal bridging was an early design consideration. It is critical because the resultant heat and energy loss are only two of the consequences if thermal bridging should occur. Condensation and mould growth can develop as well, which may lead to potential health and respiratory problems for the occupants. So with balconies around the building connected to the edge of the internal reinforced concrete slab, preventing the possibility of thermal bridging at these connectivity points is crucial.

Photo supplied by Stefan Huger

As a result, the designers of the Velux building incorporated one of the most effective countermeasures on the market, the Isokorb structural thermal break unit from Schöck. It is a range that allows connections to be made between concrete-to-concrete, concreteto-steel and steel-to-steel. The many different unit types available, combined with their ability to enable the transmission of shear, bending moment, tension and compression forces, also means that the options available effectively run into thousands when the different combinations are taken into account. Concrete-to-steel balcony connectivity For this particular application the Isokorb type KS from Schöck was the ideal solution. It is a concrete-to-steel connectivity module that sits between the outer and inner structural connection points and blocks the outflow of heat through the use of high quality polystyrene insulation foam. This polystyrene core sits inside a compression module that has stainless steel bars passing through it – and these in turn take the tension and shear forces between the building frame and the balconies. The Isokorb thereby enables a thermally insulated, load bearing connection to be made between reinforced concrete and steel construction components, and at the same time provides a clean and unobtrusive connection detail. A 20 page ‘Specifiers Handbook‘ is available which provides an overview and introduction to the Schöck Isokorb, and there is a comprehensive 236 page ‘Technical Guide’ which displays in detail the complete range of thermal break applications for all construction types. Hauraton Surface Drainage At The New Shetland Gas Plant Located on the edge of the British continental shelf some 125km north-west of the Shetland Islands, lie the Laggan and Tormore gas and liquid hydrocarbon (Petroleum) fields, surely a uniquely challenging environment, but one with great potential for the UK energy industry. To process the gas and liquid hydrocarbon reserves a new on-shore plant is being built on a 540,000m² site located to the east of the established Sullom Voe oil terminal on Shetland. The new plant will occupy an area of about 250,000m². Started in early 2010, the Shetland Gas Plant will be connected to the Laggan-Tormore offshore subsea production system which is being jointly developed by Total E&P UK and Dong E&P (UK). Once operational, the Gas Plant will be capable of processing up to 500 million standard cubic feet of gas per day and will employ around 70 people. Planned to be on stream by mid 2014, the new facility will be operated by Total. An initial contract was awarded to Irish company, Roadbridge in March 2010 to carry out the site preparation works and the construction of a 2.4 mile access road. The engineering, procurement, supply, construction and commissioning contract for the plant itself was awarded to Petrofac Offshore Engineering & Operations unit in October 2010. Morrison Construction was then awarded a contract by Petrofac in June 2011 to carry out site infrastructure works including underground and surface water drainage facilities, roadways and buildings. With the shoreline and waters around Sullom Voe home to large populations of seals, dolphins and other sensitive wildlife habitats - there are a number of offshore Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) in the area, Morrison Construction and other contractors were asked to ensure any ecological impact was minimised during and after the construction phases. The Shetland Gas Plant site is situated on a steep slope and required extensive earthworks. This together with the plant's location and harsh weather conditions characterised by 1000 to 1700mm annual average rainfall and frequent storm events, meant the surface water drainage system employed would have to be robust and very efficient at controlling surface water runoff. All collected surface water had to be channelled into a separator, tested for contamination before being released into the sea. Calculating the hydraulic performance needed, Morrison Construction were looking for a channel system available in at least three sizes to drain the site’s roads and service areas. After dialogue with Hauraton UK Technical Support staff, the company’s FASERFIX® SUPER 300, 400 and 500 channels were specified with Class D400 ductile iron slotted gratings.

26

atb:projects

The grating specification chosen featured parallel rows of 20mm wide slots, each half metre grating being secured to the channel with the company’s patented SIDE-LOCK system and eight high tensile bolts. The order for the 1425 metres of channel required was placed with Builders Merchants Grafton Group contracts office in Glasgow, who decided to process the orders through their Buildbase Shetland Depot in Lerwick. Tim Connolly Sales and Marketing Director at Hauraton outlines the features and benefits of FASERFIX® SUPER channels that made them ideal for the Shetland Gas Plant project; “Hauraton have for the last 50 years been at the forefront of manufacturing robust Fibre Reinforced Concrete (FRC) surface water drainage systems that are today distributed and installed around the world in some of the harshest environments. The FRC perfected by the company in the mid 70’s allows our FASERFIX® channels and trash boxes to have much thinner walls yet are very much stronger when compared with similar non-reinforced concrete products.” “A standard feature of FASERFIX® SUPER channels are galvanised steel pressings securely moulded on to the top edges of the channel during production, this detail allied with the Class D400 ductile iron gratings provides exceptional wear resistance and increased load bearing capability. Unlike some other well known makes, FASERFIX® components are so strong, even prior to installation they are able to endure the rigours of site work so reducing waste and down time”. DuPont™ Tyvek® FireCurb™ Enhances Safety And Sustainability At A New Hotel In Norway The impressive Lerkendal Hotel project, part of the ‘Lerkendal Stadion’ complex in Trondheim, Norway, aims for the highest standards of safety, efficiency and sustainability. With a volume of 35,000 square metres and a height of 75 metres, the 20 storey structure encompasses 400 bedrooms, plus state-of-the-art leisure and conference facilities. Designed by Voll architects, the new building has been planned to conserve power both passively, through structural elements such as optimum airtightness – and actively: through solar heated water; returned energy from elevators and cooling units; and by encouraging and rewarding guests to save energy. The aim for total energy use in the hotel is a maximum of 50kw per square metre per year. This forward-thinking project called for specialist and innovative solutions to protect the building, both during the construction phase and once in use. Apart from minimising carbon footprint while maximising interior comfort, another key factor is, naturally, occupier safety – and the structure benefits from both in the form of DuPont™ Tyvek® FireCurb™ Housewrap. This pioneering new building product features a patented technology designed to improve fire safety and reduce costly fire damage, while providing an environmentally-friendly breakthrough solution that delivers a hi-tech breather membrane at a competitive cost. Supplied with technical support, both off and on site, by Isola (distributor of DuPont™ Tyvek® products for Scandinavia) and approved by Norwegian safety consultants COWI AS, 12,000 square meters of DuPont™ Tyvek® FireCurb™ Housewrap have been installed into the building envelope to meet stringent requirements for airtightness, thermal performance and moisture control. The adoption of this DuPont product would also limit flame propagation within the façade structure, restricting damage and potentially saving lives in the event of a fire. Adding superior flame retardant performance to the renowned properties of DuPont™ Tyvek®. The new technology potentially limits or stops the spread of fire through the external envelope using innovative technology to reduce the flammability of polymer based substrates. This solution dispenses with halogens, using instead a phosphorous containing agent to promote the formation of a ‘char’ layer at the surface when it is in contact with an ignition source. This thin layer of carbonized polymer is highly flame retardant and forms a barrier, slowing the release of flammable materials into the fire. Starved of fuel, the flame spreads over the membrane more slowly or not at all – and if the membrane does ultimately burn, it produces less smoke – another vital advantage for human safety. Rigorously tested, DuPont™ Tyvek® FireCurb™ Housewrap has a fire rating of class B-s1,d0 according to EN13501-1. Light-weight, robust and easy to work with, DuPont™ Tyvek® FireCurb™ Housewrap was installed to the external envelope of the structure in the form of ‘ready-wrapped’ and carefully sealed panels, built off-site as separate elements in a facility owned by Skanska, about 100 km north of Trondheim. www.FlameRetardant.tyvek.com Enquiry 54

Kubex Showers Grace Halls Of Learning Hotham Court is a purpose built Hall of Residence for the University of Creative Arts at Canterbury catering for the needs of a total of 107 students. A recent major refurbishment undertaken by Coombs [Canterbury] Ltd. included the replacement of some 56 shower cubicles and clearly, in a student environment, not only the need for efficiency and hygiene had to be met but also robust reliability had to be taken into consideration. Fortunately Hotham Court had previously installed 20 Kubex shower units in 2011 and these had proved more than adequate to meet all those requirements plus the compact size necessary in an en-suite single student living area. As a result it was an easy decision to call on Kubex UK Ltd. of Hull to supply the replacement shower cubicles. The Kubex Kingston units agreed upon have measurements of only 2000 x 785mm with a depth of 705mm yet give the impression of spaciousness. Delivered fully assembled, the units fit through a standard door and can be plumbed in ready for use in minutes making the Kubex slogan of”… Just Add Water” remarkably apt. Strength of the cubicles is ensured by 22mm composite side walls, a reinforced 13mm back wall and, in the case of the Hotham Court, pivoting doors in toughened safety glass to EN 12150. Bi-fold, curtain and corner entry models are also available in the Kingston range. Kubex UK Ltd. has, over the last 20 years developed a reputation for cubicles that are completely leak-free thanks to a unique jointing system, very easy to install and remarkably strong. Certainly the Kingston units, supplied by the local Travis Perkins branch, show every sign of standing up to hard use yet have the high appearance to be expected in a University Hall of Residence. www.kubex.co.uk Enquiry 58

Siemens Secures Arctic Airbase Thule Air Base in Greenland, the US Armed Forces’ northernmost location, has some of the most extreme weather in the world. Temperatures down to -60oF are commonplace, and the world’s second highest wind speed of 207 miles per hour was measured on the base. Despite these challenging conditions, standard SiPass Entro access control products from Siemens have been in use at the base for more than 10 years. They have proven to be so dependable that the installation has been extended over the years from originally one to approximately 380 doors. Originally built in just 104 days in great secrecy at the start of the Cold War era to provide a refueling stop for US bombers on their way to targets in the USSR, Thule Air Base is now home to several US military groups, including the 12th Space Warning Squadron that operates a Ballistic Missile Early Warning System designed to detect and track intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) launched against North America.

The original Siemens installation covered 280 doors in 36 buildings, including doors giving access to accommodation areas, leisure facilities and dining areas. Centralized control was provided by four computers in the base’s Hilltop security facility. Additionally, provisions were made for base technicians to plug a portable PC directly into the segment controllers in each building to help with error diagnosis and maintenance. Controlling access to the solarium In addition to the standard access control functions, which include an antipass-back feature to prevent double access, the installation was configured to provide a booking system for the solarium, which is very popular during the three months of the year when the sun is permanently below the horizon. Those wishing to use the solarium log into the SiPass Entro system’s website to make a reservation. When they arrive at the solarium, they use their access control card to “turn on the sun.” If they show up at the wrong time or without a reservation, however, the system ensures that they get no sun. Provisions are also made for unlocking and locking doors remotely from the Hilltop central control station to ensure that personnel who forget their cards can get into the buildings to escape the sub-zero temperatures prevalent at the base. Additionally, the system offers a person count facility that can be used to ensure that all persons are safely indoors when a bad weather alert is in force. When the decision was made to enlarge the living quarters on the base, Greenland Contractors looked carefully at the best way to expand the access control system in order to cover an additional 99 doors. Once again, the company decided to use SiPass Entro because the original installation had performed flawlessly for a decade. An important additional benefit was that today’s Siemens products retain full backwards compatibility although the products in the range have evolved greatly since their initial installation at the base. This makes it easy to integrate the new and existing modules of the installation and to provide unified management for the entire system. Flexible solution for use in extreme weather conditions “When we first installed the Siemens Entro system a decade ago, it replaced ordinary key-operated locks and code locks that did not give us the control and convenience we needed,” says Martin Søgaard of Greenland Contractors. “Then as now, Siemens system provides a complete and effective solution.

Around 150 members of the US Armed Forces and 450 Danish support personnel live on the base, with the non-military facilities for this small “city” being operated and maintained by a Danish company, Greenland Contractors. Despite the remote location of the base, security of even the non-military buildings is an important issue. Access control for these buildings was originally provided using ordinary key locks and digital locks. However, around ten years ago, the decision was made to move to an electronic access control system which would make access management easier and give much greater flexibility. Impervious to the cold and polar bear attacks Finding a suitable system was not easy, however. Since many of the card readers would need to be installed outside, they would not only have to withstand the harsh arctic weather, but also operate reliably in the worst weather conditions to ensure that personnel is never stranded outside. In addition, the system would have to cope with high levels of static electricity resulting from the very dry air at the base. After carefully evaluating the available options, Greenland Contractors decided to install a system using products from the SiPass Entro range, not only because they operate dependably in harsh environments – it has even been suggested that the vandal-proof card readers used in outdoor locations could resist polar bear attacks – but also because the system combined flexibility and scalability with ease of use and excellent value for money.

30

It now covers approximately 380 doors in 57 buildings, and with it we can easily produce cards that give personnel on the base access to any combination of doors. We can also readily change authorizations when duties change and make sure that if someone leaves the base their card is no longer valid. These things are very important, as people are constantly arriving at and leaving the base.” “Another important feature is that the Hilltop security management center can use the SiPass Entro software to give the fire brigade unobstructed access to buildings in the event of a fire alarm. This extra time can be extremely valuable in an emergency.” For further information please contact: Sam Lord, Security Products for Siemens, sam.lord@siemens.com; or visit www.siemens.co.uk/securityproducts Enquiry 59

Elta Fans Co-Operate In Construction Of Group’s ‘Outstanding’ Head Office UK fan manufacturer Elta Fans has supplied ventilation equipment for the highly sustainable and award-winning headquarters of The Co-operative Group in Manchester. Given the prime focus on sustainability, an important consideration in the specification of the fans was compliance with the regulations introduced by the Energy Related Products (ErP) Directive. With this directive, the European Union laid the groundwork for the reduction of energy throughout the entire supply chain of electrical goods. Its objective was to help fulfil the EU’s obligation under the Kyoto Protocol to increase the EU’s renewable energy sources to 20% by 2020 and increasing energy efficiency by 20%. The Directive, which covers all the principal fan types between 125W and 500kW input, sets out minimum efficiency levels for fans. Those fans that do not comply with the efficiency guidelines will ultimately not be marketable within Europe. Low noise performance was also seen to be an essential requirement in selecting fans for the ground breaking new head office, with Elta Fans chosen to supply quiet running units. The list of equipment provided included: 15 Revolution SLC axial fans; 4 ATEX fans; 4 Qube HT, the high temperature, multi discharge, double skinned, centrifugal fans; 1 Multiflow SMC fan and 2 Biflow conical bifurcated fans. Elta Fans’ Revolution SLC is a robust range of ErP compliant long cased axial fans, featuring high efficiency, adjustable pitch aerofoil section bladed impellers. The extensive range comprises ten standard sizes from 355mm to 1000mm, offering good performance combined with strength, durability and corrosion resistance. The casing of the long lasting and robust, ATEX all metal fan, is constructed from a single sheet of steel, with motors and axial impellers mounted within the length of the unit casing. All parts are heavy gauge mild steel sheet, roll formed and welded, then hot dipped galvanised to BS 729 after fabrication. Where aluminium blades are

32

selected, an anti-spark track is fitted around the impeller track. Alternative impellers of stainless steel or anti-static polypropylene are also available. Elta Fans’ QUBe fan is a multi-discharge double skinned centrifugal unit. It is supplied for straight through airflow with the outlet panel positioned directly opposite the inlet panel. The outlet panel can be easily changed on-site with the top or bottom panels to provide 90° airflow if required. The inlet and outlet panels incorporate circular spigots with integral U-shaped ozone and UV stable EPDM rubber seals to prevent duct leakage. As the units were all to be installed in the plant room at the top of the building all fans were supplied with IP66 inverters to allow the units to be connected to the building’s management system (BMS). The IP Code (Ingress Protection rating) classifies the degree of protection provided against the intrusion of dust, solid objects and liquids into mechanical casings with electrical enclosures. Heating and ventilation can contribute significantly to a building’s environmental footprint and operating costs so attention has been paid to this in the design. The diagonal ‘slice’ of ‘One Angel Square' creates an open atrium nine floors high, topped by a glass roof facing south to collect heat from the sun, maximising both daylight and passive solar gain. The exterior has a double skin façade with a cavity between its inner windows and the outer glass structure. This is for both sustainability taking advantage of the thermal insulating properties within the design and aesthetically co-ordinated to support additional energy savings, whilst emphasising the curve of the three corners of the building. The double skin also provides a walkway between the inner and exterior panels for maintenance and solar shading. www.eltaselect.com Enquiry 60

Technal Windows And Curtain Walling For New Flagship School Of Medicine In Cardiff A new flagship medical education centre in Cardiff features aluminium curtain walling options and casement window systems from Technal. Designed by Powell Dobson Architects and built by Vinci Construction UK, The Cochrane Building accommodates the School of Medicine on Cardiff University’s Heath Park Campus at the University Hospital of Wales. It is now one of the largest facilities of its kind in the UK, home to over 3,000 students and staff, and is a major international centre for medical teaching and research. The brief for the project was to bring all the school’s departments together in a single location and to create an exciting and vibrant place for learning. The age and condition of the previous facilities on the Heath Park campus and a steep increase in student numbers had led to an acute shortage of suitable facilities for medical professionals. The new building is designed around a central atrium and features extensive use of Technal’s GEODE-MX curtain walling to allow high levels of natural light into the centre of the building. The capped visible grid option was specified for the main entrance and the top two floors of this six-storey scheme. Structural glazing with a mechanical toggle rather than silicone bonding was used for the full height stair towers at the ends of the atrium, which provided a seamless, flush finish and an effective contrast to the capped curtain walling in the other areas. Ribbon glazing on some elevations and opening vents in the curtain walling were created from Technal’s FXi65 projecting side and top hung window systems. These allow the building to be naturally ventilated, drawing fresh air in through the exterior façades. A distinctive feature for the building envelope is a series of staggered aluminium panels finished in a bright lime green. These units were fixed into the window or curtain walling frames and provide a lively accent to the scheme’s otherwise neutral palette of gun metal grey and white render.

34

Fabricated and installed by Vision 2000, the Technal systems were polyester powder coated in dark grey and glazed in grey tinted solar control glass. Passive ventilation louvres were also inserted into the window frames on one elevation. One of the challenges for this project was its highly restricted hospital site with no room for material storage. The Vision team overcame this with a phased delivery and installation programme and the use of Technal products that are designed to reduce time on site. As this project demonstrates, Technal’s GEODE-MX curtain walling can be used to create a wide variety of architectural compositions from a single grid system – low to high rise façades, horizontal or vertical emphasis, and ribbon, structural, faceted, beaded and sloped glazing. Technal’s FXi65 casement window system, which is fully compatible with GEODE-MX curtain walling, features curved profiles and delivers superior thermal efficiency using a 19mm flush polyamide thermal break and innovative gasket detailing to meet or exceed the latest Building Regulations. It can accommodate 17mm up to 48mm glazing units for wider choice to provide additional thermal or acoustic performance. Configuration options include fixed lights, top, side and bottom hung, tilt/turn and tilt/slide. The 6,300 sqm Cochrane Building is a low energy building that is designed to BREEAM ‘excellent’ aspirations. Its design includes elements such as passive ventilation, a building envelope for minimal air leakage, good natural light, energy-efficient lighting and controls, solar shading, high levels of insulation, a green roof, solar water heating and high efficiency boilers. The scheme is designed as three interlinked areas unified by two atrium spaces. It accommodates a twin-storey inter-professional library, state-of-the-art clinical skills simulation training facilities for medical students, postgraduate teaching areas, seminar space, student support services, group study rooms and an innovative ‘learning hub’. www.technal.co.uk Enquiry 67

The Upward Growth Of London's Skyline... And How Roto Has Helped Make A Cheesegrater London’s skyline is ascending fast. While the UK capital is a long way off the likes of New York and Hong Kong in terms of being a towering metropolis, some notable high-rise buildings have been appearing in recent years. The City skyline has since been rising at quite a pace. And that brings us to the Leadenhall Building, where Roto has supplied hardware for over 500 windows. Named after its address, 122 Leadenhall Street, this brand new skyscraper is being built right opposite the iconic Lloyd’s of London building. The statistics tell a story in themselves: 225 metres (737 feet) tall. 48 floors, accessed by a total of 29 lifts, and there are 560 windows – all featuring Roto hardware. The shape of the building has resulted in a nickname, one that will surely stick: The Cheesegrater. There are good reasons for the sloping face: it ensures views of St Paul's Cathedral are not obscured. The windows needed a bit of clever thinking. They’re inclined inwards at 10 degrees. Of course, Tilt&Turn hardware is generally intended for use on installations that stand vertically. Roto engineers have designed and manufactured bespoke hinges especially for this project, and they form part of a dedicated hardware specification based on the ALU T540 system. Some of these windows act as external entry points for the emergency services. On these, a flush-encased gearbox is fitted. This has a spindle drive, which can be accessed from the outside by fire crews, who are able to use a tapered spindle (a standard part of their kit) to operate the gearbox and open the sash. ftt.roto-frank.com/en/press/details/article/kundenspezifischer-kompetenzbeweis/ Enquiry 68

Marmox Aids Conversion At Hackney’s Village Green The Village Green, launched in the middle of April this year, is the latest project from Creative Network Partners. Set in Hackney Downs Studios, The Village Green is a brand new independent East End experience; a shopping and cultural development initially incorporating five local small businesses but with the possibility of further expansion. Architects Iolanda Bianchi and Mirko Lupo’s conversion task involved a great deal of creative restoration and adaptation as they set out to transform the Studios from a large, fairly open works area into the attractive Village Green format of five separate shops. Two of the conversion problems were the need to build a new mezzanine floor structure above the shops and to ensure that the interiors of the shopping areas were quiet and intimate. These two problems were actually rolled into one as the Architects used Marmox Heraklith Wood Wool Panels as the cover material and as the final decoration layer. Heraklith wood wool panels are a natural product consisting of certified spruce wood, which originates in North European timber production forests and are produced with respect for the highest ecological, social and ethical standards. Heraklith panels are multipurpose and can be used internally or externally on walls, floors and ceilings. Being designed with an open surface structure they hold great acoustic properties that contribute to a quieter and more comfortable living and working space. These hygroscopic panels allow the building to breathe by absorbing the moisture in the air and releasing it back when most needed, when it’s dry. They are also renowned for their fire proofing qualities. www.marmox.co.uk Enquiry 69

Terram Truckpave Upgrades Busy Industrial Depot A large 9000m² site in Oldham Broadway Business Park, owned by Electricity North West Ltd. had been heavily under utilised. This was due to the unstabilised surface within the depot yard, which was prone to flooding and clearly unsuitable for HGVs and even forklift trucks could only be used intermittently, when weather conditions permitted. The options of tarmac or reinforced concrete were quickly discarded, partly due to the cost of stabilisation prior to installation and partly on environmental grounds since the surface water run-off from such a large area would have a significant impact on the surface water drainage network locally. The ideal solution came from Dunster Consulting Ltd. of Pately Bridge, who had previous experience of Terram Truckpave, Fiberweb’s robust and durable porous pavin. Terram Truckpave 100, laid on a free draining granular stone sub base, was selected as the surface course for this heavily trafficked area, amounting to some 3,700m². Terram Truckpave is extremely simple and quick to install. Each paver weighs only 12kgs – substantially lighter than concrete alternatives - and is compliant with HSE manual handling limits. The pavers (600x400x100mm) are simply butted together and the series of cells in each unit offer a void area of 55% which can be filled with angular gravel, or top soiled and seeded to provide a grass finish. Terram Truckpave provides a permanently stable, robust and durable surface laid on a permeable free draining subbase ,achieving a sustainable drainage solution. The paving is flexible and resistant to cracking with high compressive strength. www.terram.com Enquiry 70

Dallmer Aids Drainage At Newmarket Spa The privately owned Bedford Lodge Hotel in Newmarket, a Victorian property once part of the estate of the sixth Duke of Bedford has recently launched a new Spa. The Bedford Lodge Hotel management called on Barnes Construction, a Suffolk based construction company, to carry out the refurbishment work to their respective high standards. The Spa offers a range of Heat Experiences as well as a Hydrotherapy pool cleansing, mud treatments, showers, steam, and sauna rooms, beauty rooms and a Spa lounge. With regard to most of the services provided, an abundance of water is used and needs to be drained away efficiently and unobtrusively, therefore a suitable product for wet rooms was required. Barnes Construction contacted Dallmer, a company with over 100 years experience in this sphere and sought advice as to which of its extensive range of products would be suitable. Dallmer recommended its floor channel Ceraline Pronto F 60Omm with a built in depth of only ….which would be suitable for each location in the Spa. The Pronto was extremely simple to install, flanges securing the drain to the floor are grade quartz sand coated onto an epoxy glue which gives optimal waterproof adhesion. The Pronto has sound insulated adjustable leveling legs as well as adjustable screws for leveling the steel cover plate. The drain body has a removable trap insert for easy cleaning and in each case a stainless steel cover plate was used. Each of the floor channels was then connected to a Dallmer Tisto one piece FAST TRAP, which is perfect for wet rooms on timber or solid floors. Tested to a flow rate of 45 litres per minute, the trap is specifically designed for use with the latest high-powered showers. www.dallmer.com Enquiry 71

ISO Energy Delivers £6K Savings For Listed Wiltshire Property The energy bill for heating and hot water incurred by the owners of a large country house in Wiltshire is expected to be reduced by as much as £6,000 a year, following the installation of a ground source heat pump solution by green technologies specialist, ISO Energy. The 17th century property, which is in the William & Mary style with accommodation over three floors has, until now relied on an oil fired boiler for warmth. Fuel prices, though, had rocketed in recent years, while repetitive maintenance was a further burden on the estate’s owners. However, when ISO Energy surveyed the Grade II* listed house and surrounding grounds last autumn, its engineers realised there was clear potential for the place to benefit from the renewable heat energy, which can be harvested by a ground source heat pump. For while in many instances, these high performance units have to be linked to pipework drilled deep into bedrock, the proximity of a 10 acre field was the ideal location to install relatively shallow ground arrays. While the existing boiler room towards the rear of the house was plenty large enough to accommodate two large light commercial high temperature heat pumps and the necessary hot water storage, the fabric of the building still presented challenging load conditions. Despite being altered, added to and renovated several times over the centuries, the building’s construction of brick and stone, along with many large single-glazed sash windows, offers minimal insulation standards. Nevertheless, ISO Energy’s survey and calculations concluded that the combination of a 10 kW and 34 kW CTC heat pump, with a nominal primary flow temperature of 65º degrees centigrade, would be adequate to provide good levels of comfort for the occupants using the existing radiators. Meanwhile the supply of domestic hot water from the trio of factory insulated, 800 litre storage vessels would far outstrip the performance of the original system. ISO Energy duly organized the installation of a fan shaped array of ground collectors that spread out across the field, navigating their way around the established broadleaf trees. A total of 11 separate 300 metre long, 40 mm diameter collectors connect back

to a manifolds, which is in turn linked to the plant room by the 65 metre long flow and return pipework. A spokesperson for ISO Energy comments: “There is a perception amongst architects and even some M&E consultants that heat pumps are only suitable for use in highly insulated properties with fairly low demand for heating and hot water. What this project in Wiltshire demonstrates, however, is that even a centuries old structure with very poor U-values and Grade II listing preventing any real improvement, can still have all its heating and hot water demands met using ground source heat pumps. Linking them to ground arrays keeps the capital cost down while the annual saving compared to relying on an oil boiler is going to be in the region of £6k p.a. That is impressive enough but when annual subsidies [partly estimated until the Renewable Heat Incentive Phase 2 is in place] of well over £7k are added, the figures are truly remarkable. “The large storage capacity provided enables the heat pumps to run for long cycles which makes them more efficient than stop-start operation; while the controls are very straightforward for the occupants to use.” CTC EcoPart heat pumps can be connected in series to meet the needs of the largest private residence and most commercial buildings including schools, hospitals and even swimming pools. They can draw their renewable energy from either sub-soil, hard bedrock or lakes and can deliver it - via their advanced refrigerant gas cycles, offering seasonally adjusted coefficients of performance (COP) of up to 4.5 – through new or existing radiator and under-floor heating circuits. www.iso.co.uk Enquiry 72
