Ten Million Reasons To Celebrate At AG’s FMT Site Staff at AG’s (Acheson + Glover’s) Fivemiletown site are celebrating a remarkable milestone in the company’s production history. The workforce has manufactured its ten millionth blo Anchor retaining wall block, renowned for its high quality and durability. Each block weighs anything between 6kg and 40kg. It takes mere seconds to make one and those made so far have been used in projects around the UK and Ireland including the M1 Belfast, M32 bus lane extension Bristol and BMW manufacturing plant in Cowley, Oxfordshire. To put it into perspective, ten million blocks would stretch from Belfast to Turkey or from the top to the bottom of Mount Everest 516 times over. Stephen Acheson, Commercial Director, said: “Our Retaining Wall has been manufactured at FMT since 1999. One of our most popular products, it’s not surprising we have reached ten million but getting there wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the Fivemiletown team. A huge congratulations and thanks to them from us. This is really a monumental accolade.” www.ag.uk.com

Robust Rainwater System For Bridlington’s New RNLI Station Bridlington’s new lifeboat station is set to open, replacing the 114 year old original station which has become outdated, cramped and impractical. The design of the charity’s new purpose built station not only considered the practicalities of a working station but also aesthetics as it stands in a prime location on the Spa Promenade adjacent to the beach - a convenient position saving precious minutes in the launch time of the lifeboat. Echoing Art Deco lines, building materials for the new station were chosen for both design impact and durability, as the construction will have to withstand the Northeast coastal elements for many years to come. With this in mind a stainless steel rainwater system from Yeoman Rainguard was chosen. Functional yet stylish, 145 x 165mm box gutters and 80mm dia. downpipes were fitted complementing the sleek linear appearance of the lifeboat house. The new two – storey RNLI lifeboat Station at Bridlington will not only look the part but will play the part too. There is space to house a new Shannon class lifeboat alongside the inshore D class lifeboat. The crew accommodation is more modern and the establishment will also include a workshop, changing and drying room, crew room, and a space for the charity’s lifeguards to store their lifesaving equipment. www.rainguard.co.uk

Offsite Solutions Wins Award Commendation For Its Latest Innovation In Bathroom Pod Construction Offsite Solutions, the UK’s leading bathroom pod manufacturer, has received an industry award commendation at this year’s Offsite Construction Awards for its latest innovation – demountable GRP bathroom pods. This advancement in bathroom pod technology, developed for buildings with restricted access, was highly commended in the Product Innovation of the Year category. The Offsite Construction Awards celebrate the best in precision building design and delivery, rewarding outstanding examples of prefabrication and factory-based products and systems, which are helping to create a better built environment – more sustainably, cost effectively, and with greater efficiency. Commenting on the award commendation, James Stephens, Managing Director of Offsite Solutions, said, “We were delighted to receive this latest accolade. It is fantastic to have such recognition from our industry for our commitment to design and innovation. We are continually pushing the boundaries to improve the efficiency of bathroom construction for our customers.

8

Bathroom pods had previously been limited to new build. The development of our demountable solution has expanded the application of offsite to refurbishment and conversion projects.” Demountable bathroom pods radically reduce work on site, and offer the superior and consistent quality of factory-built bathrooms. Eight GRP pods can be reassembled on site in just one day with a three-person team. This compares to site-built bathrooms on a typical scheme, which can take 6-12 weeks to complete requiring up to 15 different trades and a high level of site management and supervision. In refurbishment and conversion projects, the only access may be through the window openings of an existing building – or internally via the main entrance and stairwells – and this may not be sufficient for a full-sized pod. The panel sizes of a demountable GRP pod are specially designed to ensure full access is achievable. Now available in the complete range of GRP bathroom designs from Offsite Solutions, the demountable option has a unique sectional design where the shower tray forms part of the floor

and the wall panels create the shower enclosure. Holes for sanitaryware are pre-drilled and only the shower door is then installed on site. The pod walls are completely vertical with 90° corners – unlike pods created from complete GRP moulds which have tapered walls – so integration is very simple. Around 1,500 of Offsite Solutions’ GRP demountable pods have already been installed. Applications include student residences, military accommodation, hotels, apartments, care homes, and hospitals – both new build and refurbishment projects. Offsite Solutions offers a comprehensive and expanding range of bathroom pods to suit different building types and applications. Options include steel-framed pods with traditional tiled finishes for high-end apartments, student residences and hotels; robust and low maintenance GRP composite pods for student accommodation, care homes, social housing and healthcare, and hybrid pods for specialist projects. www.offsitesolutions.com

Devon Development Shows Benefits Of Omnie Underfloor Heating A high quality residential development, being undertaken in one of Devon’s most sought after locations, is making extensive use of underfloor heating systems from the well proven and very versatile OMNIE range. The four properties at Clearwater Court in Clyst St. Mary – two of them conversions of a former industrial building and two newbuilds - are nearing completion by Vision Developments (SW) Ltd., creating spacious and energy efficient homes with character. Within the converted paintworks, the modernised masonry construction offers both high standards of insulation and thermal mass while the space heating is being provided by high performance gas boilers distributed by two OMNIE solutions. The boiler in each property is connected via two of OMNIE’s Axios manifolds located at ground floor and first floor level. Across the

kitchen and other downstairs rooms, OMNIE’s Staple system has been installed over insulation before being covered by a screed. Then in the bedrooms and bathrooms, the specification switches to the LowBoard 15 panels installed over the particleboard flooring, with insulation between the timber joists. The Managing Director for Vision Developments (SW) Ltd., Richard Parker, commented: “This is a high profile project for us as a regional development company, where we are offering prospective purchasers a very high standard of specification for a sale value of £345K. As well as a high quality finishes and good space standards, we wanted to ensure the properties are comfortable to live in and economic to heat.

assured of good technical support where required. Each system is designed specifically for the build from square one: so everyone is covered for their specifications, right through to the tiling on top.” OMNIE provided Vision Developments and the installer, Exeter based Radiate Heating and Plumbing, with detailed layout drawings showing the different pipe runs and manifold positions in relation to the room layouts. The design support included heat loss calculations and flow settings for the commissioning of the underfloor heating. www.omnie.co.uk

Affordable Housing Development Benefits From Magply Performance Off-site timber frame systems are evolving with an increasing market share in the construction industry with speed of build becoming a major factor along with fire risk and weather damaged products during the construction phase. One supplier addresses all three factors, including an affordable housing development in Essex, utilising Magply boards as an internal lining board to internal and external walls. The project at Buckingham Green, Basildon, has seen T.T.F.C Ltd. erect a total of six new homes. The two twostorey and four three-storey houses have been supplied in panel form by Wexford - based T.T.F.C Ltd. T.T.F.C Ltd. now routinely installs 99 per cent of the Magply boards within its Wexford factory, before they are shipped to site and assembled by fully trained erection teams. They then use additional sheets of the strong and durable material to protect and complete interfaces, including within stairwells to flats and houses. This provides immediate continuity and fire resistance, while keeping the timber and insulation dry. As a high performance, multi-functional board, Magply features a formulation that provides a fire-safe and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional plywood or OSB products. Additionally, the unique production process ensures chloride content at a negligible level of around 0.03%, ensuring Magply remains dry and noncorrosive whilst enhancing both stability and long-term durability. Crucially, Magply carries internationally recognised EN Standard, UKAS accredited certification confirming 90 minutes fire integrity and insulation under test conditions and Euro class A1 non-combustibility. Furthermore, the range offers excellent racking strength, impact or pull-out resistance and all round ease of use in a variety of applications. Magply has been tested under BS 476 Part 22 for timber frame applications and parts 6&7 (Class O) surface spread of flame together with other approvals such as EN 1364-1 and EN 1365-1 for unloaded or loaded wall applications. www.magply.co.uk

Flexible Bollards By Mccue – The ‘Fighter Jets’ Of Warehouse Protection Bollards are the essential sentinels of damage prevention in the workplace – and thanks to McCue Corp, the humble protector is now armed with an array of features that makes your facility safety stronger, smarter and much more economical. A finalist in ‘Best Innovation on an Existing Product’ at the illustrious MODEX expo, the McCue FlexCore Bollard’s flexible, shock absorbing properties help it deflect impacts – and its durable, high-visibility plastic shell is rust, scratch and dirt resistant. Like many McCue products, the company’s designers stepped into the shoes of customers when creating the FlexCore Bollard. Traditional core-drilled or plate-mounted bollards can withstand impacts, but cracked concrete, permanent deformation and unsightly erosion through rust, flaking paint or general wear-and-tear create a multitude of maintenance costs and problems. With the Flexcore Bollard, these issues are greatly diminished. Utilising similar technology to high-performance aircraft and military vehicles, McCue’s innovators implemented a high-strength spring-steel post attached to an industrial shock absorber for the Bollard’s core. For the exterior, the steel post carries a rubber load ring that allows the cover to rotate on impact, flex and reform. This triple-pronged protective process not only saves the bollard, it protects the vehicle or piece of equipment that comes into contact with it. On top of this, installation is simple and fast, with no trip hazards and fully hidden hardware. This, combined with the ultra-low maintenance properties of the bollard, adds up to a whole lot of savings over an extended period of time. If your bollards need replacing, or if you’re about to install them new into your site, McCue’s state-of-the-art protectors will fight for your facility from the word go. www.mccue.com/uk

New Tyvek® E-Guard W1 Provides Peace Of Mind On The Exposed Cliffs At Mevagissy Any high-spec timber build demands the very best in envelope protection, both during construction and once occupied, but particularly in places of great exposure from the elements. When Cornwall Timber Build came to specify a suitable reflective breather membrane for the walls of a new housing development on the rugged Cornish coastline, they found that only new Tyvek® e-Guard W1 ticked all the right boxes. This means that, in addition to excellent low emissivity values, the project also benefits from superior UV resistance while the membranes are uncovered, plus enhanced airtightness, and crucially, complete confidence in water hold out (at above TRADA recommendations). All these advantages come naturally to Tyvek®, which has demonstrated its reliable performance time and time again, both in rigorous testing and over many years in the field. Situated on the cliffs at Mevagissy, new build housing by Cornwall Timber Build benefits from the multiple qualities of new Tyvek® e-Guard W1, a metallised breather membrane with high thermal values and above W1 water hold out. New Tyvek® e-Guard W1 for walls occupies a unique position in the market by offering above W1 water hold out. TRADA recommends W1 as a minimum for sites of the level of exposure of this location. Cliff Road in Mevagissy, as the name suggests, is situated on high ground and at the mercy of all the variety and power of the Atlantic weather. Tyvek® e-Guard W1 delivers an impressive 1.7m water column, a near passive standard of airtightness, resistance to four months UV exposure, and all the dependable vapour permeability for which the leading brand is famed.

22

In terms of reflective capacity, metallised Tyvek® e-Guard W1 is certified as having a thermal resistance value for all cavities larger than 20mm of 0.75 m2K/W (using the NPL guarded hotbox method) and reflects 95% of heat radiation, providing interior comfort throughout the year. The product has also recently been granted STA AssureGold accreditation “When the building components for the site were being prepared in the factory,” says Stuart Dewey of Cornwall Timber Build, “we knew that the location was classified as severe exposure. This limited our choice of breather membrane to those with a W1 or better water hold out. Most metallised membranes offer only a W2 (50mm water column) rating but Tyvek® e-Guard W1 is far superior. In fact, its 1.7m water head means that we can use this material all over Cornwall and the rest of the UK, in any type of geography, while meeting and even exceeding industry guidelines.” There are five 200 square metre plots in the Mevagissy development, offering high quality timber frame homes, with external finishes varying between natural slate and block and render. Eventual occupants can look forward to enjoying not only the beauty of their location, but also comfortable interior conditions and lower energy bills, even if the weather outside is travelling through Cornwall’s traditional extremes. www.construction.tyvek.co.uk

A New Record In Dallas Levolux has helped transform a 1980’s built 17-storey office building in Downtown Dallas, Texas, with the addition of a dazzling solar shading solution, applied at ground and roof level. Formerly known as the Belo Building, 400 South Record Street has undergone a comprehensive refurbishment, designed by Gensler. Levolux was approached to develop a custom solution for this prestigious development. Based on its popular 9000 series louvre system, two large horizontal projections were devised, not only to shield the building from the sun, but to create an interesting architectural feature. Levolux supplied almost 900 trapezoidalshaped aluminium fin sections for the project. The Fins, each measuring 420mm wide, are fixed at an angle of 45 degrees, facing south, and are set at a pitch of 600mm. The two canopies of Fins provide important shading to glazed areas at lower levels and for the new Sky Garden. The lower level shading canopy, projects at 7.5 metres in height from the building’s facade and continues around the perimeter of the building. The horizontal structure is supported from a series of vertical steel posts, with a maximum projection of 9 metres. On the building’s east-facing elevation, the main entrance opens onto South Market Street. Here, Levolux provided the same trapezoidal-shaped Fins, but with a twist. The Fins begin horizontally within the entrance area at high level, but as they emerge outside they gradually twist by 45 degrees to line up with the other Fins. The shading canopy created at roof level, shares the same composition as the lower structure, except it has a smaller area. The west-facing roof terrace, otherwise known as the Sky Garden, is a new feature for the building, replacing a glazed roof. The Fins provide essential shading to the terrace. www.levolux.com

A First For Automatic Partitioning Recently refurbished, Vodafone’s Manchester office is the first building in the UK to combine two electric moveable walls, delivering an entirely automated system for dividing room space quickly and efficiently. Working with architects, CMI Workplace and main contractor, Overbury, Style was specified to install a fully automatic Dorma Hüppe Moveo Glazed ComfortDrive moveable wall adjacent to a Skyfold, the fully automatic, vertically rising operable wall which is housed in the ceiling cavity. At the push of a button, the walls open and close with ease, offering a phenomenal lab tested 50dB Rw acoustic integrity for the Moveo glass system, and 51dB Rw for the Skyfold. The former Cable & Wireless building near Manchester Airport has been completely re-fitted to bring it in-line with Vodafone’s Better Ways of Working ethos. Throughout the building there has been significant improvement to space planning efficiency, with the two automatic operable walls helping create an environment that support’s the multi-functional purpose of the building. “The future of space division is in automation,” said Andy Gibson, Style’s director for the north, “and we are seeing a significant shift in demand towards electric systems. The Vodafone project is a first of its kind and certainly raises the bar to a whole new level in terms of what can be achieved.” The Dorma Hüppe fully automated glass acoustic moveable wall forms a corridor within an open plan event space. CMI Workspace then cleverly split the room further with a vertically-rising Skyfold acoustic moveable wall. “Having previously worked with Style and the Dorma product, we had confidence in the quality”, commented Dave Downie from Overbury. “We also had experience of the Skyfold wall from previous projects and were keen to see it installed in this unique space.” Style is the exclusive UK partner to Dorma Hüppe and Skyfold. As the UK market leader in moveable walls, Style is championing the drive towards fully automatic room division across multiple market sectors. www.style-partitions.co.uk

High Capacity Channel System Drains Car Park At Mcarthur Glen, Designer Outlets, York McArthur Glen, the leasing, management and marketing company has twenty one Designer Outlets in eight countries across Europe and is still expanding its business. The new Designer Outlets indoor mall at Fulford, York features over 120 designer brands including clothing, foot ware, eyewear, home wares, restaurants and cafés. The mall is set in 60 acres of landscaped grounds, including an extensive free car park available for customers. Hauraton Limited introduced the RECYFIX® MONOTEC, surface drainage system in January 2016. The McArthur Glen Designer Outlets mall, York, joins numerous installations successfully completed in the United Kingdom. The RECYFIX® MONOTEC system was installed to provide surface drainage in a section of the car park’s asphalt surface. Having a grating width of 100mm (Channel internal dimension) with an overall height of 230mm and a cross-section of 190.5cm2, the 66 metres of channel supplied provide a total water capacity of just over 1260 litres. The MONOTEC one metre long channel component is of a sturdy monolithic design where the HEELSAFE grating and the tongue and groove linking system are integral to the channel moulding. The whole unit is made of tough, virtually unbreakable polypropylene (PP) formulated to be very resistant to daily temperature fluctuations from frost conditions to strong sunlight, including the Ultra Violet (UV) spectrum. PP is naturally resistant to de-icing salt. Complying with the requirements of EN 1433, the PP is given its UV resistance by adding just sufficient stabiliser so that the structural strength of the material is unaffected and a consistent appearance is maintained. The MONOTEC channels have a loading category of up to Class D400. Tim Connolly, Hauraton‘s Managing Director comments; “The tongue and groove features on the MONOTEC channels provides easy assembly of the moulded components and facilitates the alignment of the channel run so cutting installation time for the groundwork contractor. All Hauraton surface water drainage systems’ comply with European Standards (hENs) and carries the CE mark”. For RECYFIX® MONOTEC product specifications go to www.hauraton.co.uk. Local Charity Residents Given Level Access Showering Thanks To Marmox As a manufacturer whose product range is synonymous with wet rooms and high specification bathrooms, Marmox has supplied ten of its specialist Showerstone level access trays for an apartment development in Newark, aimed at those likely to have mobility issues. The new-build project at Parsons Mount on the town’s King’s Road, is being built for a local charity by Taylor Pearson Construction Ltd. and will eventually provide 22 high specification dwellings for retirees. Guy Taylor Associates is the regional architectural practice leading the widely acclaimed and sustainable project. Phase 2, where the trays have been used, has created ten, one bedroom flats, on two floors where, on the ground floor the Marmox Showerstone trays were set within a screeded floor, while those upstairs have been installed into the timber joists to maintain level access. All of the 1200 x 1200mm Marmox trays were supplied via the Chesterfield branch of SIG. The Showerstone is a solid shower base that can be laid directly onto timber joists without any further support needed but in this instance, it was the ideal solution for the whole project, being that it could also be sited into conventional cement based screed. Strong enough to support a load of 600kg, the Showerstone is made with a combination of polymer-concrete and GRP material, which makes it almost unbreakable and robust enough to allow vinyl or mosaic tiles to be laid on top, without the risk of compression through point loading. The base profile, which slopes from an outside thickness of 22mm down to 5mm, is designed to be compatible with the Marmox McAlpine drain which is supplied in two versions: for tile or the vinyl flooring applications. www.marmox.co.uk

Schöck Isokorb Combinations Meet Berlin Project Demands Affordable living space has long been a scarce resource in Berlin and one of the latest developments to help resolve the problem is a contemporary inner-city housing complex called Paragon Apartments. The ‘cube theme’ design comprises 217 high specification apartments, plus a kindergarten, a café and a supermarket. All formed as a three-dimensional façade involving terraces and a shifting stacked balcony pattern. The balconies are made of light-coloured prefabricated concrete elements, and are of varying depths which give the apartments a spacious quality. To simplify the construction of the complicated solid cube pre-cast elements on the façade, the components were broken down into balcony plates, roofing and sidewalls. It is critical, with such a demanding building envelope construction, that the risk of thermal bridging is reduced to a minimum, especially with the increasing need for buildings to be designed according to low energy building standards. To meet this requirement, Schöck has supplied variants of its Isokorb structural thermal break product. Predominantly the type KXT, for concrete-to-concrete applications is used, which offers such a high level of insulation that the Passivhaus Institute in Darmstadt, Germany, has awarded the product with the low ‘thermal bridge construction‘ certificate; and confirmed its suitability even for passivhaus construction. With the balcony design, the plate and the canopy element for the balcony below act structurally on the same floor. So it was necessary to connect the two free-cantilevered reinforced concrete plates using the appropriate Isokorb types in an alternating pattern. The standard Schöck Isokorb type KXT element with straight shear and tension rods was alternated with the Isokorb type KXT-HV. This has off-centre shear and tension rods on one side of the unit to enable connection to a downstand beam, where the balcony lies lower than the floor slab. Both units transfer both negative moments and positive shear forces. In addition to the type KXT, the Isokorb types EXT and KS are also incorported. The EXT normally complements the type KXT in bearing high loads involving cantilevered external corner balconies, but on this occasion it is used to support the side wall loads. The Isokorb type KS is used where there is a requirement for the free cantilevered steel girder canopy elements of the structure to be secured to the reinforced concrete slab. www.schoeck.co.uk

Kemper System Facilitates Award Winning Roof Refurbishment At Gatwick Airport When the existing flat roof above the International Departure Lounge at Gatwick Airport’s North Terminal was failing, Kemper System’s liquid applied waterproofing was the first port of call. Working closely with contractors, Mitie Tilley Roofing Ltd, to develop a sound waterproofing solution, Kemper System’s Stratex Warm Roof system was specified using its solvent-free Kemperol 2K-PUR liquid waterproofing as part of a full refurbishment of the 2,500 sq. m roof area. Chosen for its odourless, quick application and versatile qualities, the fleecereinforced, liquid waterproofing system by Kemper System meant contractors could adhere to the strict timescales and operational restrictions on-site. Mitie Tilley Roofing Ltd first removed 250 tonnes of the existing roof ballast using a suction excavator machine. The substrate was cleaned prior to an application of Kempershield Type 1 Primer and Kempershield Vapour Barrier. A combination of 123mm Kempertherm FR and Kempertherm TR Tapered PIR Insulation Board was installed onto the main roof area, including the guttering. Kempertherm TR comprises of a rigid PIR insulation board, a dense closed cell structure with a hard-top facing providing additional reinforcement to the top face that also provides the optimum substrate for the application of the liquid membrane. The polyurethane-based Kemperol 2K-PUR resin was then applied in a single, wet-on-wet process. The roof area presented numerous complexities and lots of detailing, including five, large air-handling units, adjacent glazed facades and 36 separate large plinths with their own steel

work, cable trays and pipe supports. Prior to application, contractors also removed the existing lead skirts, cover flashings and associated cementitious insulated upstands on each of the 36 support plinths. The plinths, and more than 150 rain screen support steel work, were also primed before application of the fleece reinforced Kemperol 2K-PUR resin. The versatility of the Kemperol system and ease of application meant contractors could provide a watertight, seamless membrane that fully incorporated all of the flat areas, complex details and outlets on the roof structure. Much of the refurbishment works were completed overnight within a four-hour working window as the client requested no disruption to the many retailers within the North Terminal below, which was done with ease using Kemperol. Kemper System also developed full Inspection and Test Plans (ITP) and Inspection and Test Records (ITR) which were updated daily by contractors, and field technicians from Kemper System who visited the site on a weekly basis to ensure compliance and maximum quality during installation. Demonstrating first-class delivery within a live airport environment, Mitie Tilley Roofing Ltd and Kemper System won an award in the Liquid Applied Roofing and Waterproofing category for their work on the project at the annual NFRC (National Federation of Roofing Contractors) UK Roofing Awards (May 2017). www.kempersystem.co.uk

Tata Technologies Innovation Centre Adds Style And Practicality With Encasement Tata Technologies’ new £20 million European Innovation and Development Centre (EIDC) in Warwick has used more than 70 ‘Forma’ aluminium column casings from Encasement to conceal structural steelwork in the three storey building. Designed by Birmingham based architects, Webb Gray, the EIDC’s steel frame curtainwalled structure provides 60,000sq.ft of office space for around 600 staff and was built by BAM Construction on a 3.85 acre green field site. Supplied and installed by Encasement, the column casings are used throughout the building on each of the three floors to conceal structural supports in the six extensive open plan office areas together with separate conference and presentation rooms and the ground floor restaurant. Manufactured from 3mm thick aluminium and standing 3000mm high, the 530mm diameter ‘Forma’ casings also incorporate an acoustic lining to help dampen noise and reverberation in the office areas. They are also finished in a white PPC coating to integrate with the interior design and reflect natural light. While some of the casings are positioned around the perimeter of each floor, adjacent to the glazed facade, many have also been integrated into the design and construction of the interior workstations, storage facilities and desktops, with cupboard units and meeting tables being built around them. In some locations, the lower half of the column casings are concealed by modular cabinets and integral desks, while in others, the storage and drawer units are designed to be slightly narrower than the column casing diameter, leaving the full height visible on either side, giving variety to the interior layout and adjacent meeting areas. Encasement also supplied and installed a series of semi-circular column casings, which are used in individual offices and meeting rooms where the structural steelwork forms part of the partition wall. www.encasement.co.uk

FAKRO Roof Windows For Aberdeenshire Passivhaus Self-Build Built on the footprint of a draughty and impractical dwelling on a site in Comers near Banchory, Carsluchie Croft was constructed to the Passivhaus standard. The low energy, sustainable family home has FAKRO FTT U6 and FTP U5 Electro triple-glazed roof windows in a design which maximises solar gain, has high insulation levels (using high density ecological wood fibre) and heat recovery ventilation. The FTT U6 has an exceptional U-value of 0.81W/m2K and is among very few standard products which can meet the exacting Passivhaus requirement in its own right. The FTP U5 windows also had Z-wave connectivity enabling them to be operated from a laptop, mobile or tablet alongside appliances from over 200 of the world’s leading manufacturers. All windows were also fitted with thermal flashings to enhance overall airtightness. The compact 1½ storey form reflects local vernacular architecture, with the angled bay on the south side designed as a dynamic element to contrast with the compact solid stone-clad form of the majority of the house. This alignment is picked up by the angle of the upper floor terrace and ‘cut-in’ of the roof above, the combined effect of which is to create a positive and negative ‘motif’ on the roofscape at the front of the dwelling. The garage and swimming pool are accommodated in a separate linear building, parallel to and physically linked to the main house by a partially covered veranda. www.fakro.co.uk

VMZINC – Bridging Contemporary And Traditional Architecture In Sport Sandwiched between the Craighead and Balcomie Courses of Crail Golfing Society at Fife Ness, the new Golf Lodge designed by Muir Walker Pride shows how distinctive design can accommodate contemporary and traditional values. A standing seam VMZINC® QUARTZZINC® façade, in combination with natural stone, defines the architectural style and retains its colour to ensure maintenance of the subtle balance between building materials. As a venue providing luxury accommodation for two separate holiday groups at the same time, the lodge offers uninterrupted 360° views of the courses, out to sea. It is of traditional construction to the first floor with timber frame above. The options afforded by zinc enable detailing of considerable complexity to be undertaken, transforming buildings which previously had little architectural value. The visual aesthetic on golf courses now holds a far higher degree of importance than when dull, flat roof buildings were so commonly considered acceptable. Reopened after a build programme which took just over a year, the remodelled British Golf Museum at St Andrews is a case in point. It is now a pavilion with a low pitch roof and upper floor façade in standing seam QUARTZ-ZINC® and ANTHRA-ZINC® STRAT finishes. The Royal and Ancient had established a single storey building as recently as 1989, and it seems ironic now to think that something so uninspiring could have been accepted on a site immediately to the rear of the famous clubhouse. Richard Murphy Architects’ added an additional floor to provide an 80 seat café with views towards the first tee, fairway and stunning West Sands beach. It combines high functionality and design values and not only sits well within its environment but provides a distinctive feature from the main road. Visitor numbers to the museum have increased dramatically. www.vmzinc.co.uk

Kalwall® Puts On A Show Kalwall® translucent cladding has been extensively used to clad the multimillion pound Exeter Road leisure development in Bournemouth, designed by architects Broadway Malyan. Almost 1,000 square metres of Kalwall have been used in this bold scheme which has transformed a former bus station into a 10 screen multiplex cinema, café, restaurant and retail complex. Recognised as a key material in this project, the translucent cladding encapsulates the building across all nine elevations and encloses the external fire escapes. At night the cladding creates a warm, inviting and ethereal glow proving a beacon for visitors while mitigating any issues with light pollution to the surrounding residential and commercial buildings. Kalwall is frequently specified for this type of prestige project where high-end performance and quality need to be coupled with aesthetics, practicality and a long life-cycle. Not only does Kalwall provide a neat and cost effective solution but it also offers complete line-of-sight protection, maintaining privacy for building occupants while bathing the interior with diffused daylighting regardless of the weather. Importantly, Kalwall will eliminate shadows and glare and the stark contrasts of light and shade. The system also enhances simplicity by doing away with the need for blinds, curtains or solar control. Even on cloudy days, the interior is flooded with natural daylight, which means less artificial lighting and, because Kalwall is highly insulating, energy costs are reduced. The standard Kalwall 70mm thick panel offers insulation up to 0.28W/m2K - equivalent to a cavity filled solid wall. www.structura-uk.com/kalwall

Residents At The Landmark Apartments In Dudley Stay Safe With SE Controls An iconic and popular residential development in the West Midlands, The Landmark at Brierley Hill, is using smoke control systems from SE Controls to ensure escape routes are kept free of smoke in the event of a fire, allowing residents to exit the building safely. Located at the Waterfront complex adjacent to the Merry Hill retail centre in Dudley, The Landmark was formerly the HQ for a financial services company before being acquired by investment property developer, Seven Capital, who converted it into 181 apartments with Colmore Tang Construction, all of which were sold off-plan within five months. The shape of the building and its graduated tiered design, which rises from two to seven storeys, are key features that made the new apartment development attractive to residents, but it also presented a number of challenges during the design and engineering of the smoke control system, which needed to be addressed by SE Controls. The building’s five existing stairwells were to be used for escape, but the travel distance from some of the apartments was more than the 7.5 metres specified within Building Regulations Approved Document B for a code compliant naturally ventilated smoke control system. To overcome this, SE Controls designed and installed four individual smoke ventilation solutions based on the specific requirements of each floor within the building, which combines both mechanical fan and natural smoke extraction to provide an effective and integrated life safety system.

and three of the stairwells where apartments are located more than 7.5 metres from the escape stairs. Also, on the second, third and fourth floors, supplementary automatic opening vents (AOV) are provided as part of the naturally ventilated smoke control system to ensure additional stairwells and corridors are kept free of smoke to aid escape from apartments within 7.5 metres of the stairs. A further naturally ventilated system is used on floors five and six. Although these have the smallest floor area, a further dedicated escape staircase is protected by AOV louvres at the head of stairs. The main escape route in the seven-storey section of the building is also protected by a naturally ventilated smoke system, which covers all the floors. Using an SE Controls OSLoop modular smoke control system and OS2 SHEVTEC controllers together with a range of AOVs, louvres, SECO Ni 24 40 chain actuators and mechanical fan extraction, the system is highly effective and operates as a fully integrated solution. Michael Scrimshaw, Business Development Manager for SE Controls, said: “The unique layout and structure of the building, together with its change of use from offices to residential made it one of the more complex projects we’ve undertaken to ensure the full system is not only compliant, but also effective. By fully understanding the escape paths and layout, we were able to engineer the complete system using different smoke control technologies as a fully integrated life safety solution dedicated to this particular building.” www.secontrols.com

On the ground floor and first two levels, which have the largest floor areas and highest density of apartments, the building uses an SE Controls SHEVTEC Extended Travel Distance mechanical fan system. This protects the corridors

Yeoman Shield Help To Maintain Standards At Oldham School The new building of North Chadderton School, Oldham was built in 2013 providing facilities for up to 1500 students aged between 11 & 18 years. Built without the provision of wall protection to the school’s interior walls, Facilities Manager William Wheatcroft soon noticed that the plastered, white walls, were suffering marking and superficial damage detrimental to maintaining the school’s high standards. “We needed a permanent solution to our problem of continually re-decorating and cleaning the walls along corridors and congregational areas of the school – which was proving to be a drain on the maintenance budgets,” explained Mr Wheatcroft. Yeoman Shield, manufacturers and installers of wall & door protection products, were called in to survey areas in the school most needing wall protection, where it was decided that 2.0mm thick FalmouthEx protection panels would be the answer to stopping the continual damage. The work was to be phased over time as and when budgets became available. The first area to be fitted with Yeoman Shield FalmouthEx protection panels at 1250mm high, in white, were the dining room, boys WC on the ground, 1st & 2nd floors, reception exit area and along the flat to raking wall of the Assembly Hall Stage. Other areas which have received the same treatment over the past 2 of years have included, staircases, refuse points, sports exit lobby, performing arts and music centre along with staff changing facilities. www.yeomanshield.com

Rehau Provides Tabs Solution For Landmark Office Development The already iconic White Collar Factory in London’s Old Street is now open for business – but key to the contemporary work spaces is the creation of a comfortable working environment. That is why more than 150km of REHAU’s Thermally Activated Building Structure (TABS) system was installed to provide low energy passive cooling. This makes the installation one of the largest of REHAU’s TABS solution so far in Europe, and it has been completed by specialist installers Anders Heating Company. In TABS, REHAU’s PE-Xa polymer pipework is embedded within the concrete floor slabs. Chilled water is circulated through the pipework and this enables the slab to act as a heat sink; drawing the heat away from the useable space and creating a comfortable working environment for the occupants. As well as being more sustainable and energy efficient than conventional air conditioning, it is also quieter, has no moving parts which could fail and generates less air movement providing a better working environment. Anders’ team completed the installation, working closely with M&E contractors Michael Lonsdale Group and main contractors Brookfield Multiplex. A key reason for the specification of the REHAU TABS system over alternative concrete cooling options was the integral REHAU EVERLOC™ compression sleeve jointing and fittings system. This is used on all of REHAU’s pipework solutions, from underfloor to district heating, and provides a permanent, leak free joint with no O-ring and no prepreparation of the pipe required. The brass compression sleeve fittings are safe to use within the embedded floor slab, allowing repairs to be made if the pipework is damaged on site during the construction programme. www.rehau.uk/tabs

Marmox Thermoblock Tackles Thermal Bridging Around Harrogate Home’s Basement Structure Some 180 Marmox Thermoblocks have been supplied to a regional builder for the construction of a high specification home near Harrogate, with their unique combination of insulating and load-carrying properties being used to tackle cold bridging where the two storeys above ground meet the basement structure which contains a swimming pool and other recreation areas. The five bedroom property has been built by Dobson Construction with a beam and block ground floor being supported off the in-situ concrete basement walls. The partially filled external wall of dense concrete blockwork, with an outer leaf of quarried stone, was then raised on the continuous course of Thermoblocks. The 65mm x 215mm x 600mm Thermoblocks have been laid on a mortar bed with the special Marmox Multibond adhesive being used to seal the stepped joints between the units. As a loadbearing composite product Thermoblock has been developed to be incorporated into various wall constructions as a horizontal layer, equivalent to a course of bricks, in order to address a critical area of heat loss, thereby reducing energy bills and making a significant contribution to SAP (Standard Assessment Procedure) calculations. Each length of Thermoblock is comprised of ultra-high performance XPS insulation, encapsulating miniature columns of concrete, while the top and bottom are covered by alkali resistant glass-fibre mesh, retaining a surface of fibre reinforced polymer concrete to facilitate bonding. The concrete columns have a very low conductivity so do not present thermal bridges themselves, and when coupled with the highly insulating XPS insulation core, a combined thermal conductivity of 0.47W/mK is achieved. Crucially, being able to employ a defined, very low thermal transmittance – derived by thermal modelling or measurement – offers a far more advantageous result than adopting the ‘default’ figure offered in SAP which can often result in non-compliance with Part L. www.marmox.co.uk

Studor Solution Waves Goodbye To Ugly Rooftops An architect’s vision for a ‘wave-effect’ building with no roof protrusions, to mirror the sinuous lines of nearby hills, has been achieved thanks to drainage ventilation expert Studor. Italian architects, in conjunction with the multidiscipline company STEAM, designed the c130m Monselice Hospital in Northern East Italy to ensure it not only fulfilled the highest operational requirements, but also had a profile in harmony with the adjacent sloping hillside landscape. To achieve this aesthetic look, the integrity of the rooftops needed to be maintained, and the design did not allow for any roof protrusions to interrupt the flow of the roofline. The project’s MEP contractor, Gemmo SpA, recognising that input from an expert in drainage ventilation was needed, asked Studor (with over 40 years’ experience in the field) to advise on the drainage system design. “Our solution was to cap as many stacks as possible with the Studor Maxi-Vent Air Admittance Valve (AAV) which fits discreetly within the roof space”, commented Studor’s UK Technical Sales Director Daniel Rath. “The Maxi-Vent protects the trap seals within the drainage system by allowing the intake of air so that each soil pipe can maintain the right level of pressure within the system. This is critical, especially in a hospital environment, ensuring there is no cross-contamination from the drainage system into the habitable space.” “Furthermore, the Maxi-Vents eliminate the need for any roof penetrations, thus reducing the amount of pipework required saving both time and money. So, not only is the integrity of the roof maintained, but heat loss was minimised and time was saved onsite.” www.studor.net

Former Headquarters Of The Greater London Council Gets An Energy Efficient Facelift For 64 years, County Hall was the home of the British Government, in the form of the London County Council, and later the GLC (Greater London Council) and ILEA (Inner London Education Authority). In 2016, London venue company ‘etc.venues’ opened a conference and event space in County Hall. It features 20 multi-purpose spaces including two river fronting suites for groups up to 900. An important aspect of the client’s brief was restoration of the period features. Synergy Architects turned to Selectaglaze, to install thermal and acoustic efficient secondary glazing, except where there were dado rails, which the conservation officer wanted to retain. As there were no rising ducts of a satisfactory size, air needed to be extracted through the existing windows. Secondary glazing was therefore required to the lower part of these windows. Selectaglaze installed 148 secondary glazing units. Those units exceeding 1600mm high were fit with a 6mm toughened low-E glass. A minimum glass to glass cavity of 150mm allowed for optimal noise reduction. All aluminium profiles and timber grounds were powder coated in a matt grey finish. The installation of secondary glazing has enhanced business prospects at ‘etc.venues’, with conference rooms, event suites and bars now providing an ambient and warm environment to suit any event. Established in 1966 and Royal Warrant Holder since 2004, Selectaglaze is the leading specialist in secondary glazing. It boasts a product range to suit all projects from Listed buildings, to new build hotels. Contact Selectaglaze on 01727 837271/e mail: enquiries@selectaglaze.co.uk or visit: www.selectaglaze.co.uk

Skating In The Quiet Some of the noisiest buildings are sports facilities such as ice rinks, halls and swimming pools where hard surfaces and large spaces exacerbate echoes and chatter. Architects Christensen & Co which designed a new and very inviting ice skating rink in Ørestad, a fast-developing suburb of Copenhagen, used a popular and very effective solution to the problem. To reduce sound reverberation, Troldtekt natural wood wool acoustic panels were installed to provide a calm and uniform surface, together with integrated lighting. The ceilings in the heated part of the ice rink provide a natural surface with a warm glow, contrasting between the cold crystalline rink and the warm club facilities. Designed as a venue for sport and fun, the architects carefully thought out their choice of materials and finishes, such as concrete, wood and glass and acoustic panels. The City of Copenhagen also invested additional funds to ensure the project was eco-friendly both in its construction and daily operation. Specified throughout the UK and Europe, the benefits of 100% Troldtekt natural wood wool panels include high sound absorption, high durability, natural breathability, low cost life cycle performance and sustainability as documented by Cradle to Cradle certification at silver level. Available in various sizes and in three grades from ultrafine to coarse, they can be left untreated or painted in virtually any RAL colour. www.troldtekt.co.uk

Aluprof On The Square Built in 1772, ‘Square Chapel’ is a red brick built Georgian Chapel and one of only few square churches ever built. Almost thirty years ago, in 1988, the Square Chapel Trust was set up to save the Grade II listed chapel to convert it back into a place of worship and a performing arts centre in Halifax. After gaining popularity in the town, in 2012 a further £5.9m development fund was raised to be invested in the complex, with £3.9m by way of Arts Council funding. Located next to the Piece Hall in Halifax, the Square Chapel now includes a second 120 seat auditorium, that provides a cinema with live screening facilities. Today, the Square Chapel forms a popular complex which offers the best in film, theatre, live music, comedy, family shows and workshops complete with a large bright foyer, where refreshments are served daily. The foyer comprises of a strikingly designed and decorated arrowhead roof construction, designed by architect Evans Vettori. Aluprof have provided full height curtain walling in their MB-SR50N system which has been supplied in a dark grey powder coat. The curtain walling was designed and installed by the specialist envelope contractor H-K-L of Sutton-in-Ashfield. As the new roof to the foyer could not be loaded onto the existing structures of the Piece Hall or Square Chapel, everything is carried on three central structural steel trees. The tree metaphor is echoed in the leafy colours on the angled canopy soffit, which has led the two entrances to be dubbed either the ‘spring’ or ‘autumn’ bridges with green

being the dominant shade on one, and brown on the other. Completing the theme, the etching of branches on the south wall glazing has been artistically provided to help reduce solar gain. Amongst the characteristics of the MB-SR50N system, is a wide choice of 50mm wide mullion and transom profiles complete with substantial assembly cleats that offer single glazed modules of up to 450Kg to be carried. The system includes a continuous thermal barrier made of HPVC insulating material complete with profiled EPDM glazing gaskets which makes it possible for the system to achieve very high levels of insulation to meet demanding BREEAM ratings. Aluprof’s extensive range of systems extend to unitised curtain walling, sliding folding doors, commercial doors systems and a wide range of window systems, all of which are increasingly being specified on a variety of residential and commercial projects across the UK and overseas. All systems are designed and installed by selected, specially trained companies to ensure each product meets Aluprof’s exacting standards. Further information is available on the company website at aluprof.co.uk.
