TOM DIXON PRESENTS THE CHURCH

4

CURVE: Is it a satellite, or is it an Art Deco sculpture? Neither actually. It is a new curved geometrical light that pushes the boundaries of thin sheet etched metal fabrication. With its microscopic precision- pierced skin and soft nickel silver coating, CURVE internally reflects and emits a filtered glow of ethereal light.

Tom Dixon: ‘This year's Clerkenwell Design Week gives us the opportunity to work in a unique context. Rather than rent a space in town, we decided to collaborate with Andrew Baughen, the enlightened Vicar of St James' Church. Andrew Baughen sees the potential of making this unique building available to the daytime residents of Clerkenwell, the creative workforce and a place for the residential community to use as a resource.

The partnership will involve us installing a large Curve chandelier in the main space, a co- working environment and a kitchen all to be donated as permanent fixtures once the Design Week juggernaut rolls out of town. The extraordinary volumes, the nooks and crannies of this classic 18th century church will allow us to demonstrate our new lighting and furniture products against a series of historic backdrops. The panelled wood of the 18th century vestry, the bare stone construction of the entrance hall and the huge volumes and stained glass panels of the main church provide us with a variety of design challenges unlike any other.

ŠSophie_Mutevelian

As the Church evolves and adapts to the new conditions of the 21st century, the opportunity of opening up to new audiences and unexpected collaborations becomes a necessity. For the design audience and the more permanent residents of Clerkenwell, we hope that a contemplative and spiritual space becomes more comfortable and accessible thanks to our small intervention’. www.tomdixon.net

Sika Launches Innovative Online Sustainability Hub For Specifiers Architects, contractors and clients are set to save time and hassle with Sika’s Sustainability Hub, sarnafil.co.uk/hub, a new website packed with tools for those specifying projects with a sustainability requirement. Sustainability considerations within a specification, especially if they’re essential to meet certain corporate social responsibility requirements or obey regulations, can take days to research and calculate. Sika’s Sustainability Hub will drastically reduce this time with its all-in-one portal that guides users through the process. The hub contains information on Life Cycle Assessments (LCA’s), a standardised method used to evaluate the environmental impacts associated with all the stages of a Sika product's life. Sika can offer specific LCA evaluations for individual projects along with information on BRE green guide ratings and Environmental Product Datasheets (EPD’s), providing the specific information specifiers need to meet sustainability requirements. In addition, the user can request general sustainability packs or specific packs for green building certification schemes including BREEAM, (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method), the standard for best practice in sustainable design, and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). To maintain a flexible system BREEAM adopts a ‘balanced score-card’ approach to the assessment and rating of building performance. Requesting project specific BREEAM packs through the website, saves time and outlines the extra points available through the specification of a Sika roofing system. Furthermore, the hub contains all the information required on Sika Roofing’s sustainable systems, including SolaRoof, Green Roof and thermal insulation, as well as a number of sustainability case studies. Users will also be able to use the hub to maximise compliance with the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) scheme, a policy that is aimed at increasing energy efficiency to improve a company’s business profits, and also future schemes such as the Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES). For more information on Sika Sarnafil’s products and services, call 01707 394444, email sarnafilroofing@uk.sika.com or visit http://gbr.sarnafil.sika.com. Enquiry 4

A new 8-page brochure and online animation from brick support specialist, ANCON, show just how simple it is to create suspended masonry soffits on virtually any brick building. Deep brick-faced reveals and soffits add extra depth to a building façade, maintaining the colour and texture of the main brick façade typically above door and window openings. Key to achieving this aesthetic is the design of the supporting steelwork which is hidden from view and this is where Ancon’s expertise comes in. Ancon provides four effective, yet distinctly different, soffit suspension solutions, all covered in a new technical brochure. www.ancon.co.uk/Nexus.

BUILDING BETTER WITH BIM www.eos-facades.co.uk

In 2011 the government committed to the use of ‘Level 2’ collaborative 3D BIM on all centrally-procured government projects by this year. This is strategically planned as part of a larger overall strategy to combine the use of BIM with the latest modern technology, leading to the collaboration of the government and construction industry working to enhance skills and reduce the cost of infrastructure. The aim of this strategy is ultimately to position digitally enhanced construction as a prerequisite across the UK construction industry. There has been scepticism, however, from some parts of the industry over the government’s BIM strategy. There seems to be a strong theme of companies claiming that there is a crucial lack of training in this area and that it is too costly and time consuming to invest in, particularly for SME’s. Despite these claims the overall acceptance that BIM has gained still seems particularly prominent. From my experience, the general consensus from our industry implies that the growing integration of BIM will have a positive effect with only a small percentage of construction companies stating that they will not be using the technology. More money is now being invested in BIM, with large jobs kicking off this year applying the use of BIM in more sophisticated ways than ever before.

The digital age is evolving. We are constantly adapting technology in order to enhance all aspects of the modern world. We have changed the way we socialise, the way we travel and the way we work in order to integrate the latest technology in our everyday lives. Building Information Modelling (BIM) is at the front and centre of the latest digital technology in today’s built environment. There is now almost a universal recognition of BIM within the construction industry, as well as widespread private sector investment in the implementation of BIM. So why is BIM so crucial to transforming the industry? Steve Thompson, MD of EOS Facades, specialists in the design, manufacture and supply of a wide range of steel sections for panelised or volumetric offsite solutions, shares his views on the positive impact that BIM will have on today’s construction industry: “In terms of procurement, BIM is a powerful tool that allows construction companies to quantify the requirements of their projects. This enables control of spending and time management resulting in the reduction of wastage in these areas. It is essential that BIM is used in the early design stages of a project to ensure that there is capacity to not only clearly identify the elements of the project but through the use of BIM, companies are able to anticipate when they need to procure any given material or element.

I feel that the government’s implementation of BIM Level 2 will have a positive effect on our industry by bringing about progressive changes to the way that we work. Through the execution of this strategy, it is predicted that BIM will bring many employment opportunities, particularly for niche software developers and offsite manufactures, as well as upskilling current employees within our industry. By creating critical mass and certainty of demand, businesses should feel confident when investing in the development of BIM within their companies. BIM is a key enabler for integrating offsite technology into construction practices – this is something crucial within government projects as there is an acute need for time efficient construction, as well as a vital responsibility for our industry and government to reduce our carbon footprint through the application of low energy buildings – resulting in lower costs for the end user. BIM helps to provide the platform for teams to integrate and work together, as well as delivering valuable information to confirm that the finished project will meet performance expectations. It is the ideal tool for connecting the whole life cycle analysis of a project – embracing new technology and a new culture of working. This is something that I feel the industry would benefit greatly from and would help to deliver projects with heightened quality through efficiency of communications and accuracy of planning and design. I am eager to see the industry take this advanced method of construction to the next level.” CPD Factory Tours To celebrate their tenth anniversary and following the investment in their fifth Howick FRAMA Machine – the first in the UK - EOS Facades have launched a series of CPD Factory Tours at the company’s state of the art Author: Steve Thompson, MD of EOS Facades

It is extremely difficult to transport the appropriate knowledge across all construction partners at the same time without the use of BIM, this can lead to the teams procuring the wrong materials at the wrong time, in different volumes.

Specifying Rooflights To Meet The Requirements Of Part Q

Recent changes to Building Regulations Approved Document Q: Security in Dwellings means that anyone wishing to install rooflights in ‘easily accessible areas’ will need to ensure that they specify a product which is compliant with Part Q. The document explains ‘easily accessible’ as: A window or doorway, any part of which is within 2m vertically of an accessible level surface such as ground or basement level, or an access balcony, or A window within 2m vertically of a flat or sloping roof (with a pitch of less than 30 degrees) that is within 3.5m of ground level.

14

at:source

These changes are most likely to affect domestic dwellings with flat roof single storey extensions featuring rooflights that fall within the criteria described above, although each project should be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Glazing Vision’s Secure and Secure+ rooflights have been tested to the latest LPS 2081:1 2015 standard, which is designed to replicate a typical stealth attack commonly carried out in residential areas. The range is accredited by the Loss Prevention Certification Board issued by the BRE. Secure and Secure+ rooflights are the first in the UK to be backed by the official police security initiative Secured by Design to LPS2081:1 2015.

Rooflights designated with the ‘Secure’ rating have been tested to LPS2081 security rating A, which identifies them as being able to withstand a sustained attack for up to one minute. Any rooflight designated as ‘Secure+’ has passed the higher LPS2081 security rating B, identifying it as being able to withstand an attack of up to three minutes. Compliant products include the fixed Flushglaze rooflight range, which includes solo, modular and wall abutted variants. The hinged ventilation rooflight ‘ VisionVent’ is also available in the ‘Secure’ range. Both Secure and Secure+ ranges are fully compliant with Approved Document Q and will be supplied with upgraded laminated glass as standard. Find out more about Glazing Vision’s Secured by Design rooflights, or download the Whitepaper for more information on specifying rooflights to meet the requirements of Part Q. This can lead to potentially unhealthy living conditions and increased the risk of damage to the building’s fabric. Johnson & Starley advocates that any heating specification must go hand in hand with the correct ventilation system, whether for new build or refurbishment projects. The company provides solutions that meet all social housing and local authority requirements, ranging from simple extract fans to centralised whole house ventilation systems, cooker hoods and sophisticated highly energy efficient heat recovery system. www.johnsonandstarley.co.uk Enquiry 32

Universal Appeal For Clay To satisfy demand for angular ridge and hip tiles made in clay, Redland has developed the Clay Universal Angle Ridge and Hip Tiles. These new ridges and hips are the clay equivalent of the ever-popular Universal Angle Ridge and Hip tiles manufactured from concrete. The clay tiles are suited for use with all types of natural and fibre cement slates as well as our own Cambrian Slates or Rosemary Clay Classic plain tiles in Red. Although Redland already offers Rosemary clay ridge and hip tiles, these are round in profile. Where angular ridges were required, concrete had to be used, which was sometimes unacceptable for planning or aesthetic reasons. The new ridge and hip tiles can be used with all Redland dry fix ridge and hip systems, including DryVent Ridge, Rapid Vented Ridge, Dry Hip, Rapid Hip and Uni-Vent Rapid Ridge/Hip. They can also be mortar bedded utilising the new Redland Mortar Bedded Fixing Kit (purchased separately).

Looking for safe rapid access?

then get our easi-dec systems

Produced in both Black and Red, the Clay Universal Angle Ridge and Hip Tiles are ideal for both the new build and renovation sectors across the country but are expected to be particularly popular in the private renovation sector where similar tiles are in need of replacement. The colour of the Black ridge and hip tile is achieved by the application of black engobe over the top surface and ends of the tile. Engobe is a ceramic material applied prior to firing. The high clay content of the engobe ensures that when the tile is fired, the tile and engobe fuse together becoming one, such that the engobe will last as long as the tile itself. The Black tiles also have manganese added to the clay to darken the body. This ensures a dark appearance is maintained if the tiles are cut. The tiles are produced from the finest clays at a factory utilising the highest standards in clay processing technology. This results in products that are strong, smooth and geometrically accurate for a consistent look. Further information can be found on the Redland website at redland.co.uk/clayangleridge Enquiry 35

Double Success For Bauder At National Roofing Awards Flat roofing specialist Bauder was recognised at this year’s UK Roofing Awards, winning two of the prizes on offer for its work on Byker Wall in Newcastle and ROM’s manufacturing facility in Sheffield. The award winners were announced on May 13th at the Hilton Metropole in London, an event hosted by TV presenter Steph McGovern and overseen by the voice of the National Lottery Alan Dedicoat.

Now in its eleventh year, the Roofing Awards are an industry-wide competition that celebrates outstanding standards of workmanship and safety within the roofing industry. This year the level of competition was particularly high with almost 300 project entries being submitted for the fourteen award categories available. A wide range of criteria are taken into consideration by the judging panel when determining category winners including: degree of difficulty, aesthetics, problem-solving and environmental qualities. Bauder’s first win of the night came for its photovoltaic (PV) installation at the landmark, Grade II listed Byker Wall estate, which won the ‘Solar on Roofs’ category. As part of the £26 million refurbishment of the residential properties, work was required to not only repair the failing roof but to also bring Byker Wall to the forefront of modern-day roofing technology with

24

the addition of a photovoltaic system. The works included converting the pitched metal roof back to its original flat roof status and replacing the waterproofing with Bauder’s high quality reinforced bitumen system, which was expertly installed by Hodgson Sayers. Four of the ten housing blocks were then fitted with 132 state-of-the-art PV Modules, enabling Byker Wall to generate at least 39.6 megawatt-hours of solar power each year. Following on from this success, ROM Ltd was then chosen as the winning project for the ‘Reinforced Bitumen Membranes’ category from a group of four finalists that included two other Bauder projects. The phased roof refurbishment at the manufacturing facility involved replacing the failing waterproofing with over 9,250m2 of Bauder’s premium bituminous system, BTRS, which was installed by Mitie Tilley Roofing. The project had various health and safety implications, with the mainsubstructure proving unstable due to corrosion and the facility remaining operational throughout the works, however all remedial work was completed on time and to budget much to the delight of the client. Bauder’s Managing Director, Andrew Mackenzie, expressed his delight with the company’s success at the awards ceremony, “Bauder is always delighted to be recognised by the Roofing Awards, which serve as an industry benchmark for quality and best practice. Byker Wall and ROM’s manufacturing facility illustrate the exceptional levels of workmanship that our approved contractors deliver and we are extremely proud of the work that has been performed by everyone involved with these projects.” www.bauder.co.uk Enquiry 38

Micro Joints – The Discreet New Way To Protect Tiles Installed Over Underfloor Heating Systems More and more home owners are choosing to install underfloor heating systems in recent years. However, if underfloor heating systems are installed and there is no adequate movement protection for the tiled surface, then the expansions and contractions caused by the heating systems will almost certainly result in cracked tiling surfaces. Dural UK’s new and innovative Micro Joint Infill is the solution for this problem, and provides discreet stress protection for tiles and natural stone on heated floors. Dural’s Micro Joint Infill has been specifically developed for tiled flooring installations which are laid over underfloor heating systems, particularly for residential developments. The infill provides effective movement protection for tiles and natural stone on heated floors. It means a tiled flooring installation with Micro Joint Infill used is able to effectively absorb the movement energy transferred from the subfloor, protecting the tiles from cracking and loosening. An important benefit of the Micro Joint Infill is that it can be colour matched to the tile colour, the existing grout, or any colour in the RAL chart. This favours tiled flooring installations where the homeowners wants a seamless finish and deems traditional movement joints too obtrusive in the flooring design. Because surface movement joints have to be positioned over existing joints in the subfloor, this means sometimes if the subfloor joints hadn’t been considered at an early stage the surface movement joints could potentially run through the middle of a tiled floor ruining the intricate flooring design. The Micro Joint Infill is easy to apply to tiled flooring. It is simply applied to the grout line spaces and can be used on Brick Bond or Opus tile formations. Due to the colour matched nature of the Micro Joint Infill it helps to create a beautiful, seamless design to the tiled flooring. www.colouredmovementjoints.co.uk Enquiry 43

Looking For A Whitewashed Floor? Bona White is a new wood floor primer designed to produce an on-trend bleached look when used in conjunction with a Bona polyurethane lacquer. The intensity of ‘whiteness’ is dependent on how many coats are applied. This client wanted a whitewashed look to their original Victorian floor boards to tie in with the soft greys of the kitchen.

To produce a highly durable, easy to maintain finish, two coats of Bona Traffic HD lacquer were applied. Traffic HD is Bona’s toughest lacquer. The very low VOC content and low odour mean there is no need for homeowners to vacate their property while the works are being carried out and there is no lingering smell.

This was achieved by the application of two coats of Bona White under two coats of Bona Traffic HD lacquer. The works were part of a complete renovation of a Victorian town house in Bath and were carried out by Bona Certified Contractor, TWF Bath Ltd, who specialise in the restoration and fitting of traditional wood floors. Before treatment, the TWF team filled large gaps using reclaimed pine wedges and then sanded the floor to 100 grit abrasives.

Its fast cure time means the floor can be in full use just 12 hours after treatment – making it an ideal choice for commercial floors too where there is little available downtime for renovation. TWF’s clients chose the Matt version of Traffic HD for their kitchen floor. Silkmatt and Extramatt sheens are also available.

Smaller gaps were filled using Bona Mix & Fill, which is mixed with sanding dust from the floor to ensure the filled areas blend in with the rest of the surface. The floor was then sanded using 120 grit abrasives before the application of the first coat of Bona White. The floor was then abraded using a Bona Scrad Pad to remove any grain raising from the surface before the application of the second coat.

Decorative Casing Solutions – The Undercover Story If it wasn’t for column casings and interior wall lining solutions, building interiors would be considerably less attractive environments. Yet, as they are designed to integrate as part of the fabric of a building, their importance can often be overlooked or taken for granted by the building’s occupants. Very few people stand back to admire a laminated plywood column casing at a school or brushed stainless steel wall cladding in a prestige office building, yet they are key elements in interior design and integral to the aesthetics of countless building environments. For column casings, at least, their role has been transformed from being a purely functional device for concealing structural steelwork to one of visual and decorative importance. From their initial use by a relatively small number of architects in the mid 1980s, column casings are now commonplace, with their aesthetic values and appeal being a key consideration alongside size and material during the specification process. The demand for wider choice and increased aesthetics from architects, interior designers and specifiers have been key influences on Peterborough based casing and interior cladding company, Encasement, whose range has continually expanded and diversified during the past ten years to become the most comprehensive available in the UK.

30

Alongside the company’s six individual ranges of column casings, its ‘Vecta’ system provides a high quality solution for interior wall linings, bulkheads and reveals. Launched just a few years ago, the system has been widely used in retail, education and commercial buildings, such as Tesco, South Bank University and Prêt a Manger, as well as prestigious office developments, including Wellington House and the Carmine building in Paddington, London.

provide specifiers and contractors with an unrivalled selection of finishes, which includes plain, laminated or real wood veneers. In addition, as Encasement is the UK’s only supplier and manufacturer of preformed plywood pipe boxing and decorative casing products that holds an FSC® ‘Chain of Custody Certification’ from the Forest Stewardship Council, both Circa and Quadra are manufactured from FSC® certified plywood. This makes them automatically compliant with sustainability codes and environmental procurement policies. Designed solely for interior decorative applications, Circa and Quadra casings are used in an extremely diverse range of projects, which underlines their versatility, ease of specification and the immense range of decorative finishes available to complement or contrast with a building’s interior design scheme. While Circa is available from Encasement as a plain casings for on site painting and decoration, by far the most popular casings are those finished with decorative laminates, which not only resist damage, scuffs and scratches, but also provides the specifier with a diverse palette of finishes from plain colours, wood grain and metallic, as well as textured and real wood veneers, to name but a few. Circa and Quadra are used in almost every building type from education, retail, hotel, sports and leisure, as well as the health sector and commercial office buildings. As a result the choice of sizes available is also wide, allowing specifiers to choose not only circular and square, but also extended circles and rectangular profiles, which use additional infill panels to give greater flexibility while ensuring they are still easy to install. Recent Quadra projects include Farnborough’s 6th Form Centre and the Dame Kelly Holmes Sports Centre, while among the many Circa installations, Gatwick Airport’s South Terminal, Liverpool University and Gateshead International Stadium are major installations.

While Vecta has already gathered significant momentum, it is for column casings that Encasement is perhaps best known. The company’s extensive range not only includes pre-formed plywood and glass reinforced gypsum (GRG), as well as a specialised fire resistant solution for use with mezzanine floors, but also aluminium, stainless steel and glass reinforced polymer (GRP) casings for exterior projects due to their inherent weather resistance. Interestingly, Encasement’s ‘Forma’ metal casings and ‘Polyma’ GRP range are also widely used in interior applications, where the selection of finishes available, particularly in the Forma range, provides specifiers with an even greater scope of options and can be specified with diameters from 250mm up to 1000mm or as square, rectangular or even hexagonal forms. Recent projects, such as Winchester College, Middlesex Northwick Park Hospital. University College London, the extensive Debenhams development at Cheshire Oaks and the restaurant area of the Mondrian Hotel perfectly illustrate the versatility of Forma column casing solutions. At Winchester College, the casings are circular, at Debenhams, they are square and accommodate LCD display screens, while at The Mondrian Hotel, they are hexagonal and incorporate a perforated skin lined with acoustic foam to reduce noise and reverberation from the restaurant. Alongside Forma, Encasement’s ‘Circa’ and ‘Quadra’ pre-formed plywood column casings ranges were the first to be launched by the company and are still arguably the most popular, as they

Encasement’s Managing Director, Martin Taylor, commented: “Column casing provide a perfect mix of practicality and aesthetics and we’ve taken a lot of care to ensure our range meets both of these key criteria while ensuring that we always remain competitive and deliver high quality products. Our products are used in projects all across the UK in just about every sector of the construction industry and building type, often using different products from our range, which underlines the versatility of our casing solutions.” He added: “Our entire range has been configured to provide the widest possible choice as well as being easy to specify, which is why we offer next working day delivery as well as some very specialised solutions, such as the Metza range, which provides up to two hours fire protection for mezzanine floor columns. “The Vecta interior cladding system enhances our building interiors offer and allows specifiers to source a range of specialised interior finish products from a single company with high levels of expertise and experience in this sector. We also have our own contracting arm, which enables us to offer a full supply and install service to support contractors.” Encasement’s latest ‘column casing solutions’ e-brochure is available for download from the company’s website and covers every product in the range as well as providing details on materials, sizes and finishes available alongside an extensive technical information section. Changing The Options For Accessible Toilets

Thomas Dudley Becomes BIM Compliant

Making ‘reasonable adjustments’ to the built environment to ensure compliance with the Equality Act is being made easier with the launch of a new solution for ‘away from home’ accessible toilets. Space To Change toilets plug the gap between conventional wheelchair-accessible toilets, and the ‘desirable’, additional, larger and better equipped Changing Places+ toilets. The concept enables venues that are limited financially and/or on space to meet the needs of British children and adults who need changing and lifting facilities for their personal hygiene. It encompasses a 7m2+ (3m x 2.5m min) wheelchair-accessible toilet that further includes an adult-sized changing bench and a hoist. Space To Change has been developed with leading Changing Places campaigners and Clos-o-Mat (Britain’s leading supplier of disabled toilet solutions at home and away). Firefly Community will drive the campaign, supporting campaigners and raising awareness of the need for accessible toilets that include height adjustable changing benches and hoists. Full details of the Space To Change concept, plus technical support, CAD blocks etc, can be found at www. clos-o-mat.com and http://community.fireflyfriends.com/ campaigns/space-to-change

Schöck Makes Thermally Efficient Balcony Retrofit A Reality The debate over the environmental, sociological and financial pros and cons of whether to demolish or renovate older housing stock will undoubtedly continue. However, increasingly it appears renovation and refurbishment will remain one of the most significant contributors to progress in terms of energy efficiency and environmental preference. With many renovated and refurbished buildings, the retrofitting of balconies, or the replacement of old thermally inefficient balconies, is in demand. Balconies aesthetically transform living space and exterior appearance and are an anticipated add-on for contemporary living accommodation, especially in city centres. The dedicated solution from Schöck for verifiable energy efficient balcony renovation and refurbishment is the Isokorb type R – a ready-to-install component which allows residents to remain in the building during external renovation, with no damage risk to internal finishes and decoration. The installation method is that drill holes are first marked with a template in position on the face of the building. Holes are then drilled into the concrete slab, adhesive injected and the type R load-bearing reinforcing rods slipped into position and anchored by means of the pre-injected adhesive. Structural screed is poured into a special pocket between the type R and the concrete slab to ensure a perfect contact between the two structural elements. Once both the mortar and the screed are cured the structure is ready for the new balcony to be connected

38

There are two main variants of the type R. The first is the Isokorb type RK, a load-bearing thermal insulation element for cantilever balconies with a reinforced concrete slab, or supported pre-cast concrete slab balconies. The second being the Isokorb type RKS, designed to minimise thermal bridges at concrete-to-steel connections during renovation. As a load bearing thermal insulation element, the Schöck Isokorb type RKS transfers negative moments and positive shear forces, allowing enormous scope for design. Unlike new-build, product selection for renovation is subject to certain restrictions. The solution will very much depend on the specific project requirements, the existing building and its structure, as well as the development of customised design proposals. The Schöck design team is on hand to provide extensive technical support on all these issues, for architects, developers, support structure specialists and contractors. This includes product selection advice for the different options; building physics detail; framework conditions; methods for undertaking a building inventory; dimensioning examples and a comprehensive checklist. All solutions meet full compliance with the relevant UK building regulations and offer BBA Certification and LABC Registration. When the Isokorb products are incorporated into residential buildings, the required fRsi value – the temperature factor used to indicate condensation risk that must be equal to or greater than 0.75 – is always comfortably met. The range also complies with the Government Standard Assessment Procedure, SAP 2012, concerning CO2 emissions from buildings and respectively heat losses through non-repeating thermal bridges. Portakabin Group Awarded £8.2M School Rebuilding Contracts

Off-site construction specialist, the Portakabin Group, has been awarded contracts by the Department for Education to rebuild two schools in the South East worth £8.2 million.

teaching during construction. We are also making excellent use of best practice architectural design and advanced construction technology, to create fantastic new buildings for current and future generations.”

The projects for St Bede’s Church of England Junior School in Woking and Riverview Church of England Primary School in Epsom are part of the Government’s Priority School Building Programme (PSBP), which addresses the needs of those schools in the worst condition across the country.

Due for completion in time for the start of the 2016/17 academic year, Riverview School will have eight classrooms for its 210 pupils and a large double height dining and sports hall. The nursery, reception and year 1 classrooms will have designated play areas directly accessible from their classrooms for ‘free-flow’ play. St Bede’s School accommodates 240 children aged between 7 and 11. Its original school building dates back to the 1930s and is now in a seriously deteriorating state. The new teaching facilities will include eight classrooms, a multi-purpose hall, and new hard and soft play areas. All year groups will have designated play spaces around the building, with easy access to encourage outdoor play and learning. The orientation and design of the building will help to create the best possible natural lighting for all the classrooms.

Both buildings will be manufactured off site at the Portakabin Group’s production centre in York and will use Yorkon advanced off-site construction solutions to create outstanding environments for teaching and learning. The approach will also cut the build programme by half to the benefit of the children’s education and reducing disruption during construction. Designed by Surface to Air architects, each school will have state-of-the-art education facilities to replace sub-standard accommodation in poor condition. The designs, which have been developed in close collaboration with teaching staff, will maximise natural light and ventilation, and feature two two-storey classroom wings. These are separated by a central ‘street’ which runs the full length of the building and provides good passive supervision and zones for informal learning. Commenting on these latest contract awards, Steve Newell, General Manager at the Portakabin Group said, “We are absolutely delighted to be appointed main contractor for these two projects. The opportunity for off-site construction to help the Department for Education improve the standard of school buildings across the UK is immense, as these projects will demonstrate.”

Following completion and occupation, both of the original school buildings will then be safely demolished by the Portakabin Group. ESG Brightens Up New Tottenham Court Road Station ESG, the UK’s largest independent glass processor, has recently continued its work for Transport for London by supplying the glass for the 2nd phase of the redevelopment of Tottenham Court Road tube station. The station is currently undergoing a multi-billion pound refit as part of the new Crossrail link due to open in 2018. The entire station was closed at the start of the project and is now reopening one section at a time. Towards the end of 2014 the new ticket office and Oxford Street entrance were reopened and revealed a, Daniel Buren designed and ESG manufactured, black and white artwork printed onto glass. Recently the new Center Point entrance has opened to the public and the walls continue Daniels design. However for this section of the station, the black and white has been fused together with colour to create striking geometrical shapes. ESG supplied over 150m² of toughened laminated glass split over 200 pieces. The coloured and black sections of the design were digitally printed and UV cured to the glass. To ensure maximum ink adhesion to the glass each panel was treated to an ESG developed pre-print wash treatment to remove any unseen dirt and oil. This treatment enables all of the printing to achieve BSI: ISO2409 adhesion standard. The printing was carried out on 8mm toughened low iron and then laminated, with a white Vanceva interlayer to achieve the background, to create the 17.5mm toughened laminated final product. The final design is already receiving plaudits from the public as to how bright and modern the new look station is. www.esg.glass – 01376 520061 Enquiry 63

Sikafloor Makes The Grade At Welsh Bottle Plant For a new production line floor at a bottling plant in Wales, a specialist floor surface system from Sika has delivered long term performance and excellent durability whilst meeting the demanding hygiene regulations within the food and drink industry. The Radnor Hills Mineral Water Company in Knighton produces more than 175 million bottles each year. For a new bottling line, the floor surface had to meet industry standards, withstand heavy machinery and be easy to clean. Appointed to complete the application within the limited timeframe, specialist contractor Coatech turned to Sika and the company’s Sikafloor PurCem polyurethane resin system – a market proven high strength screed. Following the re-screeding and sloping of an old warehouse floor to ease cleaning and drainage, Coatech diamond ground the screed to provide an effective key for the application of 100m2 of Sikafloor Purcem 20 which was laid to a depth of 9mm. The Sikafloor system was also used as a seal coat for covings, ensuring ease of cleaning and hygiene. Offering excellent strength, Sikafloor 20N Purcem is a polyurethane modified cement screed that is highly resistant to chemicals, fatty acids and temperature. As the water-based system normally requires no primer, its installation is considerably less complex than many other systems, producing a joint-free surface that is slip and abrasion resistant. www.sika.co.uk Enquiry 65

Wraptite Tape Helps Chester Le Street School Achieve The Grade WraptiteTape has proven to be a real winner in combining the essential properties of airtightness and vapour permeability behind rainscreen cladding in the newly refurbished Chester le Street Primary School. Wraptite Tape was installed in conjunction with Kingspan Rainscreen Insulation Board behind the new rainscreen cladding. Typically an aluminium coated Butyl adhesive tape would be used to seal joints, openings and penetrations. Whilst providing a seal against air leakage, these tapes may not only prevent air, but also prevent the movement of moisture vapour, leading to potential problems and damage to the boards underneath over time. Due to the nature of the project being a refurbishment, breathable felt was not suitable for the Vapour Control Layer as it would come into direct contact with the rear cladding surface, and conflict with specified continuous air flow ventilation methods. The introduction of the Wraptite Tape solved all issues with airflow, and necessary air clearances to ensure a continuous Vapour Control Layer to the existing building. www.proctorgroup.com Enquiry 67

Stelrad Radiators Providing Warmth For New Museum And Art Gallery

Leading radiator manufacturer Stelrad has provided the radiators for the new Gwynedd Museum and Art Gallery, recently opened in Bangor on the north west Wales coast. The new Museum and Art Gallery has been named ‘Storiel’ – a name that combines the Welsh language words for the two main purposes of the museum and gallery, stori - the stories about each of the artefacts cared for and exhibited, as well as being a gallery or ‘oriel’ showing contemporary and historical art.

The Stelrad Radiators selected for the project were mainly Classic Columns and models from their Compact range, with a small number of Low Surface Temperature LSTi Plus radiators for the toilets for those with disabilities, in the building. Project Manager for the new building is Esther Roberts: “We chose the Classic Column radiators for the main areas where the visitors will be and the Compacts for the staff areas and corridors around the building. The building is a very light and airy one, and the white radiators blend well into the décor of the building.” “We’re delighted to be involved in such a prestigious development,” says Stelrad’s Marketing Manager Chris Harvey. “The Classic Column radiators could have been designed for a building like this and work really well in the reception area. They offer a classic design that complements both contemporary and traditional interiors so well. They provide a real, style statement that perfectly suits the space at the Storiel.” Full details of the options available from Stelrad can be found at www. stelrad.com, you can call for brochures and information on 0844 543 6200 or email marketing@stelrad.com. Iconic Art Centre’s Winning Performance With Crittall Windows New fenestration for an iconic listed arts centre at the University of Sussex presented a particular challenge for architects RH Partnership but the successful outcome has been achieved thanks to close collaboration with steel window experts Crittall. The University’s Attenborough Centre for Creative Arts (ACCA) was designed in the 1960s by Sir Basil Spence and subsequently listed Grade 2* by English Heritage. The building’s curved brick exterior is punctuated at ground floor level by steel windows and doors that, along with the rest of the structure, had fallen into disrepair. Extensive consultation was undertaken by the Brighton-based architectural practice with English Heritage (now Historic England) and Brighton & Hove City Council’s conservation team for the most acceptable solution to replace the existing metal framed, single glazed windows and doors. “RH Partnership have worked very closely with Crittall Windows to reproduce the patterns and profiles using W20 sections and to incorporate double glazed units,” says architect David Sweeney. “With large areas of glazing in the front-of-house spaces, the capability to add slim line double glazed units has drastically improved the thermal performance of this building.” Solar control glass has also been added to particular south and east facing windows so as to reduce overheating during summertime and natural ventilation has been improved by an increase in openable windows and the introduction of trickle vents.

The complete refurbishment of the building, including a main auditorium with a flexible 350 seating arrangement, exhibition spaces, four differently-sized studios and teaching rooms and the development of an area beneath the auditorium to provide 33% more usable space than was envisaged in the original design, has provided the University with a cultural flagship structure. Says David Sweeney: “Working on a Sir Basil Spence, Grade 2* Listed Building such as this can be a real challenge. The solution provided by Crittall Windows has been very successful both in terms of its performance and the appearance of this 1969 iconic building.” Also on the University campus a second Sir Basil Spence, Grade 2* listed structure, the Chichester 1 building, is undergoing refurbishment and, once again, Crittall products – the Corporate W20 and Corporate 2000 windows – have been specified. Corporate W20 windows and doors offer designers great versatility including the ability to create or reproduce many styles. They deliver very slim sightlines, are English Heritage approved, and find widespread favour with planners and conservationists. Corporate 2000 are equally suited for residential, institutional and commercial applications, and can be used to produce unusual and innovative window wall designs. Major user sectors are offices, hotels, hospitals, universities and schools. www.crittall-windows.co.uk Enquiry 72

Passivhaus Design Maintains Indoor Environment Using Omnie MVHR With less than 400 PassivHaus certified properties so far completed across the UK, the ultra-low energy standard from Germany can still be viewed as nascent in this country, though there are many compliant components and technologies available to assist in these designs: such as the mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system offered by Omnie.

“Gale & Snowden identified the HRU as being the most appropriate, low energy model on the market for our needs and the fact that Omnie is an Exeter based company also fitted with our ethos of trying to buy local. While the HRU and the two manifolds and ducting have been installed by the Go Green Engineering of Exeter.

The highly efficient Passive house certified CA550 heat recover unit (HRU) has in fact just been installed as a crucial element to the building services within a private residential property under construction near Tiverton in Devon. The two storey 200 square metre structure replaces an earlier dwelling on the Bampton site where Gale & Snowden is the specialist architectural consultant and passive house designer responsible for the specification process.

In fact the semi-rigid ductwork is an integral part of the Omnie system and enables good flow characteristics to be maintained while routing the pipes around the structure to different rooms. The reduced number of fittings also assists in preventing air leakage.

In addition to the ducted central ventilation system, which will constantly harvest warmth from extracted stale air, the new home uses a holistic set of measures in order to keep energy usage within the tightly controlled PassivHaus parameters. These include a super-insulated building envelope, use of thermal mass to mitigate extremes of temperature and standards of airtightness so exacting as to restrict air changes to below 0.6 per hour. The latter figure, set by the PassivHaus Institute, is so low that it would lead to problems of stale, moisture laden air becoming trapped in the living spaces, with the possibility of it causing condensation, damp and damage to the fabric of the building or even “sick building syndrome” which adversely affects the health of the occupants.

The CA550 HRU itself is designed to run continuously at a cost of approximately 30 pence per day, depending on the tariff and is extremely quiet in operation as well as offering such sophistications as automatic summer bypass and a boost facility for when humidity levels increase. Overall the Omnie CA550 HRU is 92 % efficient making it fully compliant with SAP, as well as able to feature in a near-to-zero energy house design such as has been created by Hugh and his wife along with their consultants. This advanced ventilation solution is also a key component to Omnie’s whole house offering which can also feature renewable energy in the form of ground and air source heat pumps, a wide selection of underfloor heating systems with sophisticated control options. www.omnie.co.uk Enquiry 74

The Devon self-builder, Hugh, commented: “Sherwood has been built on the site of a former bungalow and has been designed by the architects, Gale & Snowden to be our forever home: with the scope for us to live on the ground floor if our health deteriorates in later life. We chose the PassivHaus low energy route in order to keep future bills as low as possible, while also utilising materials and products, which would offer a healthy living environment”.

Bright Space For Bright Sparks: GLASSOLUTIONS Creates Ideal Learning Environment At Alford Community Campus

Market-leading UK glass manufacturer, GLASSOLUTIONS, has played a key role in creating an optimal learning environment for students at Alford Academy’s new Community Campus in Aberdeenshire. Main contractor Morrison Construction approached GLASSOLUTIONS to manufacture and install an attractive curtain walling system for the development, choosing glazing products carefully to create a space with excellent temperature control, effective ventilation and plentiful natural light. In recent years, Alford Academy has found it increasingly hard to accommodate its large yearly intake of new pupils. With existing campus capacity at its limit, a £37 million contract was devised by Aberdeenshire County Council, in partnership with hub North and the Scottish Futures Trust, to create the school’s new Community Campus. The new site accommodates 960 pupils and has brought together the primary, secondary and senior years on a single site, as well as providing sport and leisure facilities for the wider community. The concept for the Community Campus was based around the creation of a central social hub for students, with classrooms and study areas branching off from this central area. The social ‘hub’ area is two storeys high in places: this allows

areas to be used flexibly for a variety of activities, as well as creating a large and airy space which lets in a considerable amount of natural light.

for climate control. Large glass units were chosen for the project to maximise light transmittance and provide a bright interior.

The wide range of purposes that the new campus was intended to fulfil meant that versatility was a particularly important aspect of the glazing specification. In order to create a safe, light, wellventilated space for students, GLASSOLUTIONS

Responses to the new campus have been overwhelmingly positive; the development has been praised for its light, airy interior and how well it has accommodated the needs of the students and wider community. Jim Hanna, project director at Morrison Construction, said: “Working with our partners and suppliers, the Campus was finished ahead of the coming academic term… We are immensely proud to have been involved in bringing this fantastic new resource to fruition for the local community.”

selected Metal Technology’s System 17 High Rise curtain walling system to form the building’s envelope. With a continuous thermal isolator providing a thermal break throughout, paired with thermally broken casement windows from Metal Technology’s System 4-20 range, the low U-value of this configuration provides excellent thermal efficiency, maintaining a comfortable internal temperature for students and minimising the need

Pendock Boosts Retail Environment At Booths When an ambitious and enterprising grocer said in 1847 that his aim was “to sell the best goods he could buy in shops staffed with first-class assistants,” it is not perhaps surprising that this philosophy remains at the heart of a business that has survived two wars and several recessions. In fact, Booths has just relocated one of its stores to Poulton-le-Fylde – and the supermarket’s ethos to be the very best can be seen reflected in the selection of high quality column casings from Pendock for the interior fit-out. Ordinary steel stanchions to support the roof at Booths were simply not considered to offer the right impression and the main sub-contractor was tasked with sourcing columns that were functional, and attractive. The contractor immediately turned to Pendock Limited, knowing that the specialist supplier would come up with a solution that could offer both style and substance to the new store. Pendock supplied nine column casings to surround the standard structural steel sections: three oval in appearance and the other six circular. For continuity of style, both types are clad with attractive brushed finish aluminium bonded to the plywood casings up to one metre in height, while above this a RAL 7037 Dusty Grey shade of the company’s Mouse Laminate was specified, rising to ceiling height. A 15 mm shadow gap marks the junction while ‘top hat’ feature joints with an aluminium insert rise up the full length of the casings. The 150 mm high toe and 160 mm head collars are also finished in the Dusty Grey laminate. Pendock’s column casings are all produced to order for clients across a variety of sectors including hotels, leisure, hospital, education and retail. They are available with a very wide selection of finishes and can incorporate lighting or other services. www.pendock.co.uk Enquiry 76

Kemper System Answers Towering Challenge In New York Kemper System’s Kemperol 2K-PUR cold liquid applied membrane has been used as the waterproofing system for the tallest building in the Western hemisphere: the 1,776ft One World Trade Centre in New York. Rising to 104 storeys and constructed in a $3.9 billion project lasting more than a decade, the One World Trade Centre, also known as the “Freedom Tower” is the centrepiece of the re-built World Trade Centre complex constructed on the site of ground zero. The 1800m2 roof is not only extremely high, but also features extensive exposed steel details and up to 400 penetrations, including the spire, with no area larger than 10ft x 10ft without some form of penetration; all of which had to be sealed effectively using a system that could be applied by a small team, with restricted access and without the use of hot works or heavy equipment. Kemper System’s Kemperol 2K-PUR liquid-applied resin membrane was specified for the main roof and the louvre areas on lower floors. The penetrations, drains, curbs and perimeters were all protected and then overlapped by the membrane in the larger expanse to provide a seamless, durable and reinforced waterproofing membrane across the entire roof. As the cold-applied resin bonds directly to the substrate it is particularly effective in coping with wind-uplift which was a major consideration for the chosen system. In line with US Building Code requirements, the system was completed with a white reflective coating to reduce the urban heat island effect. Kemperol 2K-PUR resin system is 80 percent from renewable materials, which fit with the overall design goals for the project. Nearly 75 percent of 1 WTC is made from recycled or eco-friendly building materials, and the building’s green design earned LEED Gold Certification. www.kempersystem.co.uk Enquiry 77

A Great Picture Inside And Out Following the complex extension and conversion of an existing office block in London’s Crouch End, a new Picturehouse Cinema has been created by Panter Hudspith Architects. The project forms part of a wider initiative within the borough of Haringey, designed to re-establish the area as one of London’s cultural and arts centres. The unique style of this four-screen cinema has attracted much interest, not only because of the dramatic transformation but also because of its new external elevation. Here, Panter Hudspith Architects have replaced the original curtain wall and specified Kalwall. Unusually, this unique translucent cladding is fitted with a tight 150mm wide grid, known as Verti-Kal, which not only serves to emphasise height but is the first of its type in the UK. On this scheme the Kalwall panels also insulate to a U-value of 0.78. Unlike conventional glazing, Kalwall eliminates shadows and glare and the stark contrasts of light and shade. The system also enhances simplicity by eliminating the need for blinds, curtains or solar control. Even on cloudy days, the interior is bathed with natural daylight, which means less artificial lighting and, because Kalwall is highly insulating, energy costs are reduced. Kalwall is distributed in England, Wales and Northern Ireland by Structura UK, a leading supplier, fabricator and installer of glass curtain walling, rainscreens, glass atria, windows and other architectural glass building products. The company has had all three of its ISO certifications successfully renewed for three years: OHSAS 18001 Health and Safety Management, ISO 14001 Environmental Management certification and ISO 9001 Quality Management certification. www.structura-uk.com/kalwall Enquiry 81

Seismic Approved Hollo-Bolts Specified For Wilshire Grand Center In LA After recently receiving the full seismic approval from ICC-ES for all seismic design categories (A to F), Lindapter’s Hollo-Bolt has been specified for the tallest skyscraper in Western USA, which is in the heart of a high-risk seismic area. Towering 73 stories above downtown Los Angeles, the Wilshire Grand Center will be the tallest building in the Western United States. It will include a hotel, offices, retail space and a rooftop ‘sky lobby’ which will provide guests with sweeping views of LA that extend to Santa Monica. Opening in early 2017, the billion-dollar skyscraper designed by AC Martin, is poised to set the architectural standard for innovation, design and quality in Los Angeles. The main feature of AC Martin’s design is the swooping glass canopy which creates an atrium with a modern exposed steel design. Lindapter’s seismic approved Hollo-Bolt was specified for connecting circular sections throughout the curved atrium structure. Following the structural engineer’s recommendation, steelwork contractors used over 3,000 M20 Hollo-Bolts to secure the structural hollow sections which form the swooping atrium framework.

Hollo-Bolts were installed from just one side, rapidly achieving discreet splice connections without the need for drilling or welding. The extremely cost effective installation did not require specialist equipment or specialist labour. It dramatically reduced the amount of work at height in comparison to traditional welding or through-bolting methods.

Construction – Simple Connections’ (Or Green Book as it is commonly referred to). The guide provides primary design advice and information on using the Hollo-Bolt for Structural steel connections. Download the Lindapter catalogue from www.lindapter.com today.

The design also eradicated the possibility of tube deformation that can be associated with through-bolting if the bolts are over-tightened. The end result was an aesthetically pleasing, clean and subtle connection which complements the design of the architecturally exposed structural steel. The Lindapter Hollo-Bolt has an extensive range of independent approvals, including Los Angeles Research Report (LARR) and full seismic approval from ICCES for all seismic design categories (A-F). It is also independently approved as a structural connection for primary steel and features in the SCI/BCSA joint publication ‘Joints in Steel

Ecodan Heat Pump In Disguise Warms Lemurs At Bristol Zoo

Metrotile Gives New Lease Of Life To The Visitor Centre At Parc Bryn Bach

The lemurs at Bristol Zoo are enjoying a new enclosure that is being warmed by the latest Ecodan heat pump technology from Mitsubishi Electric. Earlier this year, installers Gregor Heating recommended an Ecodan PUHZ-W50VHA2 air-source heat pump to keep the space in the new 12m2enclosure at a cosy temperature for its residents.

Lightweight steel roofing company Metrotile UK has completed the renovation of a leaking roof at the lakeside visitor centre of a countryside park in South Wales. The innovative roofing solution was selected to provide a new covering for the building on Parc Bryn Bach, near the Blaenau Gwent village of Tredegar. The previous porous roof tiles were found to be letting water into the café area and the popular facility now has an impermeable roof made of high quality lightweight steel tiles. With a 40-year-guarantee, the new Metrotile roof has given the facility a new lease of life and an attractive makeover, in time for the busy summer season. Some 2,600 of Metrotile’s vandal proof Slate 900 profile, each covering almost half a square metre but weighing just 4.6kg, now cover the 1,300 square metres roof of the visitor centre. www.metrotile.co.uk

Richard Blackmore of Gregor Heating explains the challenge: "The enclosure is fully insulated, which makes it perfect for the installation of heat pump technology. However, unlike a domestic installation, the animals must be kept at a constant heat of 22oC, and the system must have the capacity to increase this to 26oC in the event that the lemurs are unwell."

VMZINC For Newcastle Uni Tower Refurb

The Ecodan PUHZ-W50HA2 heat pump has the smallest capacity in the range, and the 5kW unit is perfect for this type of application as it operates with outside temperatures as low as -20 oC. An added challenge on this project was that the base of the lemur enclosure is three quarters of a metre deeper than the visible floor which is packed with wood chip to serve as the 'real' floor for the animals. The brief therefore was to find a solution that would heat the enclosure to the required temperature, and that would also be able to penetrate 750ml of insulation. In order to ensure that inquisitive lemurs would not tamper with the heat pump, it was disguised using a foliage print added by Bristolbased specialists Hydrowrap. Gregor heating also installed a perimeter heating system - which ensures that the pipes are hidden by a specially installed 'skirting board' at the perimeter of the enclosure. The integration of heat pump technology has allowed Bristol Zoo to meet the precise requirements of the lemur in a manner which is both controllable and energy efficient.

An £18m refurbishment of Newcastle College’s Parsons Tower will extend the usable life of the 60s block by around 40 years. Pre-weathered standing seam VMZINC® ANTHRA-ZINC® and QUARTZ-ZINC® façades and roof have given an ugly building a distinctive visual aesthetic and completely new face on the skyline. Being such a dominant feature of the city landscape this was a key consideration, so the Red Box Design Group subtly extended the façade into the roofline using the two contrasting shades. www.vmzinc.co.uk Enquiry 89

DuPont™ Tyvek® Breathes New Life Into Heritage Renovations Tyvek® has a long history of proven performance, and of playing its part in important restoration work. Sacred buildings benefit in particular and many architectural treasures around the world now feature this advanced breather membrane installed under a traditional slate roof. In Belgium, two churches have recently been restored by specialists Golinvaux: The Church of Saint-Martin in Arlon, which is designated as an exceptional Walloon heritage site, and Saint-Nicolas-en-Havré in Mons. In order to protect the renovated structures against the elements, both during the build and for the long term, Golinvaux has fitted its usual underlay of choice: DuPont™ Tyvek®. Pierre Raeven, Golinvaux site manager, says, “The true advantage of Tyvek® is that we can remove the old external roof covering and directly fit the protective underlay in just one day – and then not have to touch it again for the entire duration of the construction work. If no such underlay has been specified, we have to cover and uncover the open roof with a tarpaulin every day – and that takes a lot of manpower. Plus, a tarpaulin is neither solid nor tight and offers little protection from the wind. Tyvek® allows us to work in optimal conditions. What’s more Tyvek® is a workhorse – and when compared to the cost of water damage, very affordable. Architects are sometimes apprehensive about using it but there is zero risk of condensation – in fact, it’s a fully breathable material.”

The church has been undergoing a substantial renovation project over several years, including the restoration of the original masonry, stained glass, sculpture, artworks, plus repairs and refits to newer additions such as electricity and joinery etc. To date, one third of the roof has been completed, with 1,180 m² of Tyvek® installed. Although the parish has existed since the 11th century, the original SaintNicolas-en-Havré Church in Mons was built in the 15th century, then was destroyed by a fire in the 17th century and rebuilt in 1664. The tower of the present church, however, remains a relic from that original structure. The present church has a typically baroque façade and a classic interior that is also renowned for its rich Baroque-style woodwork. However, for this building too, the current roof was nearing the end of its life. “For the Saint-Nicolas-en-Havré Church project we used an umbrella scaffolding and laid the structure over the entire surface (600 m²),” adds Pierre Raeven, “the Tyvek® membrane perfectly fulfilled its role as a rainscreen during the construction work and thus the roof frame was completely protected from the elements during this complex project.” Both these precious relics of the past now benefit from the kind of advanced technology and performance that has made DuPont™ Tyvek® the modern choice for roofs that are built to last.

Based in Bertrix in Belgium, Golinvaux are renowned experts in the restoration of roofs, towers and steeples, particularly for historical monuments from cathedrals to castles. The company combines the use of natural slate with the most modern of techniques and – whenever possible – Tyvek® underlays.

Other significant church restorations benefitting from Tyvek® include the much loved St. Mel’s Cathedral in Longford, Ireland which was devastated by fire on Christmas day 2009, the medieval St. Germanus church on the Rame peninsula which receives the full force of the Cornish coastal weather, and St. Augustine’s grade A listed church in Scotland.

The Church of St. Martin in Arlon is architecturally impressive, dominating the landscape of Arlon thanks to its 97 metre tower. The existing structure was built between 1907 and 1914 and is considered one of the finest examples of neo-Gothic buildings in Belgium.

Refurbished Building Warmed By Omnie Underfloor Heating A owner of a dwelling in Hampshire/West Sussex has completed the transformation of one of its earliest buildings by installing underfloor heating, using two of the ranges manufactured and distributed by Exeter based Timóleon Limited. The one time pigsty, located not far from Midhurst, derelict for a time time, before work began on repairing the roof and making the stone-built structure habitable. Today the old agricultural building provides care and accommodation for elderly residents with a day room on the first floor, along with a shower room and other facilities. Being keen to be green, as well as to minimize its running costs, the client has chosen to install an air source heat pump to supply the property’s space heating and domestic hot water, with the underfloor heating systems – part of the Omnie range - being installed by Agincourt Contractors from Petersfield. The Omnie’s FoilBoard floating floor system was chosen for installation across the ground floor slab while Omnie’s LowBoard is used upstairs. The project also made use of Omnie’s precisely engineered five port manifolds to feed the various zones on both the ground and first floors. The total pipe length installed into the FoilBoard and LowBoard profiles on each of the two floors was approaching 535 metres.

56

Not only do the various Omnie systems - which also includes one for retrofitting between timber floor joists – offer comfort and convenience, but underfloor heating is also a proven way of bringing the optimum performance from renewable technologies, particularly air and ground source heat pumps. These are most effective and energy efficient when left to run for long periods, delivering a low temperature background warmth; while underfloor systems also free up wall space and allow old buildings to be more sensitively restored. www.omnie.co.uk Enquiry 92

Marmox Heraklith Panels Help Restore Post War Church Hundreds of square metres of thermo-acoustic woodwool boards made by Heraklith and supplied by by Marmox have been employed in the restoration of a significant church building, located in East London, following weather damage. St. Paul’s Church, Bow Common has been described as the most significant church built in Britain since the Second World War, having been completed in 1960 to the designs of architect, Robert Maguire, along with interior designer, Keith Murray. Having celebrated the 50th anniversary of its consecration in 2010 – a relatively short time-span in ecclesiastical terms – water ingress led to a sudden and serious collapse of some of the existing woodwool ceiling panels during 2013. The area beneath the lantern was cordoned off immediately and services moved westward into a safe-zone, so there were never any questions that the building could not be used. Now though, a comprehensive repair contract carried out by Noble & Taylor, Ongar, has been completed with significant funding by the Heritage Lottery Fund. During the painstaking work a total of 135 standard Heraklith panels were consumed by Noble & Taylor’s craftsmen: being readily cut to shape on site and decorated as desired by the consultants to match as closely as possible the original decorative scheme. Heraklith panels are produced from natural timber fibres to provide a durable and versatile wood wool insulation. They are simple to cut and fix with conventional tools. www.marmox.co.uk Enquiry 94 57

New RECYFIX® MONOTEC Drains Car Park At The New Travelodge Weston Super Mare A new Travelodge in Weston Super Mare, Somerset has opened its doors to guests in March 2016. The hotel is located on Beaufighter Road, some three miles from the Grand Pier and includes a newly laid asphalted main car park with 47 spaces drained by a 60 metre run of RECYFIX® MONOTEC, Hauraton’s new high capacity channel system. Hauraton Limited introduced the RECYFIX® MONOTEC, their new high capacity channel system in January, the new Travelodge being the first installation of the system in the United Kingdom. The MONOTEC channels installed in the Travelodge car park have a nominal grating width of 100mm, an overall height of 380mm and are suitable for a loading category of up to Class D400. The channels provide a cross-section of 355.5cm2 and have a high attenuation volume. The RECYFIX® MONOTEC one metre long channel component is of a sturdy monolithic design where the HEELSAFE grating and the tongue and groove linking system are integral to the channel moulding. The whole unit is made of tough, virtually unbreakable polypropylene (PP) formulated to be very resistant to daily temperature fluctuations from frost conditions to strong sunlight, including the Ultra Violet (UV) spectrum. PP is naturally resistant to de-icing salt. Complying with the requirements of EN 1433, the PP is given its UV resistance by adding just sufficient carbon black as a stabiliser so that the structural strength of the material is unaffected and a consistent appearance is maintained. The front asphalted car park, with 15 spaces, at the new Travelodge is drained with over 40 metres of RECYFIX® PRO 100 channels fitted with Hauraton’s FIBRETEC® Class C250, HEELSAFE gratings which have a similar appearance of the MONOTEC grating. This HEELSAFE grating has super smooth, elliptical slot openings where the moulded bars have slightly raised triangular bosses along their outside edges. As well as providing an elegant appearance, this ensures surface water is directed into the slots helping eliminate any cross-flow over the grating which helps optimise the channels attenuation volume.

58

Cat Jones, Hauraton‘s Project Manager for the South West comments; “We worked closely with the ground workers to ensure the drainage systems specified were going to be discreet, blended in well with the desired design effect and meet the loading Class required. It was particularly pleasing this first installation of our tough RECYFIX® MONOTEC channels here in the UK went so well, with a maximum weight of 10.4kg the contractor found the channels supplied, easy to handle and install with no breakages reported during the installation process. Matching Trash Boxes and End Caps were also supplied. All Hauraton surface water drainage systems’ comply with European Standards (hENs) and carries the CE mark”. Malcolm Benham, Operations Director for the main contractors Pavenet Limited comments, “The RECYFIX® channel runs were easy to install and user friendly. With the job complete, we had a day of very heavy rain and were impressed that both car parks were effectively drained with no puddles on site”. SE Controls Feels The Power With Bristol’s Electricity House Development Electricity House, Crest Nicholson Homes’ stylish city centre apartment development in Bristol is using an advanced smoke ventilation system from leading smoke and natural ventilation specialist, SE Controls, to help keep residents safe if a fire should occur. Originally designed by acclaimed architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in the 1930s, the six-storey Grade II listed building has being converted into 85 luxury apartments, while ensuring that many of the original design features are retained or reinstated to enhance its art deco style. The building’s main atrium is at the heart of the SE Controls solution, as the smoke ventilation system is designed to vent smoke from the atrium in the event of a fire to ensure escape routes are kept clear. To achieve this, SE Controls designed, installed and commissioned the system, which comprises 37 SHEVTEC® automatically controlled louvres, which are manufactured and tested in accordance with BS EN 12101: 2. The SHEVTEC® louvres also incorporate ‘fall protection’ to increase safety, as well as using IP rated external motors, which are essential to allow easy access for future maintenance. A further 21 low level air inlet louvres and linear door actuators also form part of the system, all of which are controlled by a series of OS2 control panels with integral battery back up and fully compliant with the relevant sections of the BS EN 12101 standard. www.secontrols.com Enquiry 100

Hull City Planners Give Trespa The Thumbs Up! A landmark development of sustainable, energy efficient homes has given a Hull council estate a vibrant splash of colour, thanks to Trespa® Meteon® cladding panels.

Hull City Council planners raised no objection to the colour scheme, or any other aspect of the development, so Villa Place went ahead.

Villa Place, a terrace of five three-bedroomed houses, has been built for the Goodwin Development Trust on the Thornton Estate in West Hull. The aim was to provide tenant families with a high quality home using modular construction, renewable energy sources and recycling to reduce wastage.

“But there were other aspects of Trespa’s offer that impressed the architects,”explains Mr Hyde. “Trespa is committed to sustainable development and strives to improve minimise the impact of its operations and products. Trespa® Meteon® uses up to 70% wood fibres from FSC™ or PEFC™ sources and the lifespan of the panels was significantly better than anything else available,” he says.

Fully occupied by the end of April, the homes feature photovoltaic panels, a communal rainwater harvesting tank, grey water recycling, restricted water usage and triple glazed windows and doors. But whereas these facilities are not obvious from the outside, Villa Place cannot fail to catch the eye. Its vibrant palette of colours created by Trespa® Meteon® panels were specified for the rainscreen cladding system, with four different shades used on each of the five dwellings. “The client was looking for something completely different, something that stood out from the estate in all respects,” says Daniel Hyde from architects Hodsons. Each of the dwellings were constructed from four prefabricated modular units that were craned into position on site.

This was the first occasion that Hodsons had specified Trespa® products but it will not be the last. “Bungalows are in demand now in Hull,” says Mr Hyde, “and, as a result of Villa Place, the Goodwin Trust, working with Hull City Council, is now planning to build 22 modular bungalows using Trespa® Meteon® panels to achieve the same sort of effect.” Trespa® Meteon® is a decorative, high-pressure compact laminate with an integral surface manufactured using Trespa’s unique inhouse technologies that utilise dry-forming and electron beam curing. It is the company’s leading family of architectural panels for façades and exterior applications, created – as with all Trespa® products - in close collaboration with architects, designers, installers, distributors and end-users. Enquiry 101

The Trespa® Meteon® panels that were installed once the units were erected, delineate each individual modular unit. “When we started looking for cladding we found such bold colours in the Trespa® Meteon® range. We asked for samples and what we received was awesome,” says Mr Hyde.

Glass And Glazing Systems Transform Media Centre A major project to transform the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics media centre into a creative hub is nearing completion, with fire-resistant glazed atriums supplied by Devizes-based Wrightstyle, utilising specialist glass from Pyroguard. Here East is a new campus for the creative and digital industries, transforming the former press and broadcast centres on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park into 1.2 million sq ft of commercial space. Wrightstyle supplied three full-height steel curtain wall internal atriums, to a total project size of over 800 m2, combining fire resistance to 60 minutes of integrity and insulation with a high level of acoustic performance. Wrightstyle also supplied a large number of its unlatched 6050F1 doors to integrate seamlessly into the atriums over various levels, part of Wrightstyle’s commitment to offer complete and guaranteed glazing system solutions. Supplying to Lakesmere, the leading roofing, cladding and facade specialist, one of the atriums is now part of BT Sport’s new broadcasting centre, while the rest of Here East will include shared workspaces, public areas and a range of bars and restaurants. The ambition behind Here East is to create a community of offices, studio spaces and a data centre, alongside new facilities for University College London, Loughborough University and Hackney Community College – a place for collaboration, entrepreneurship and learning. Wrightstyle also helped to transform the media centre for the 2004 Olympics and Paralympics in Athens, supplying over 41,000 m2 of steel glazing systems to create Golden Hall, now one of Greece’s foremost retail centres. The company, which is a European leader in the design, fabrication and supply of

62

advanced steel and aluminium glazing systems, was also a supplier to the 2012 London main stadium and the adjacent ArcelorMittal Orbit, the 114.5 metre tall sculpture and observation tower. Pyroguard supplied Pyroguard T-EI60/25-3 VI for the project, a double-glazed fire resistant glass specifically designed for use in steel profiles. The solution provides an hour of integrity and insulation from fire and optionally can be combined with counterpanes which offer additional performance characteristics such as solar control, thermal insulation, sound reduction, or attack protection. The Here East project was complicated by the need to accommodate sloping head screens and, due to the size of the building, significant vertical and lateral movement. Wrightstyle’s design solution was to incorporate a specially-welded anti-racking configuration with bespoke brackets. “Here East is all about transformative legacy planning – a hugely imaginative project to create jobs, encourage creative entrepreneurship, and foster further education,” said Lee Coates, Wrightstyle’s technical director. “Our advanced glazing systems allow ambient light to flood through the building, removing the more traditional internal walls that the designers saw as being barriers to networking and collaboration,” he said. “The building-height internal atrium uses steel-framed curtain walling with Pyroguard fire glass. On the ground floor, there is a subtle continuation of the stunning ‘dazzle camouflage’ frit pattern that wraps around the facade of the building, whilst upper floors mix in black spandrel panels. This project demonstrates that the use of fire rated glazing does not require compromise in terms of design or performance,” said Simon Ellison, UK Head of Project Sales at Pyroguard. “The result is a transformational project that will further rejuvenate the east of London, become a destination for other Londoners and serve as a model for other regeneration projects across the UK,” he said. www.wrightstyle.co.uk www.pyroguard.eu Enquiry 102

Levolux Touches Down At The ESA The £12 million Roy Gibson building, which will host the European Space Agency’s (ESA) UK branch – the European Centre for Space Applications and Telecommunications, has been fitted with an adaptable solar shading solution, courtesy of Levolux. Located on the Harwell Campus in Oxfordshire, the 4,500m2 Roy Gibson building accommodates cellular offices, a lecture theatre, gymnasium and a canteen area, arranged over five-storeys. British architects Wilson Mason adapted a German design to create a BREEAM ‘excellent’ rated building. The building incorporates innovative, energy-saving technologies, including ground source heat exchangers and a fully automated solar shading solution from Levolux. Following a challenging brief, Levolux developed a custom solar shading and screening solution, applied internally and externally. A combination of external Venetian blinds and curved Aerofoil Fins have been incorporated into the façade, providing shade to office areas and the building’s reception and conference wing, respectively. In total, Levolux supplied and installed 411 external, motorised Specialist Venetian Blinds, against glazed openings to office areas. The external blinds feature 60mm wide, perforated, roll-formed aluminium slats. The horizontal slats are protected by vertical tensioned cable guides, enabling them to withstand typical weather conditions. To maximise performance, the external Venetian blinds are paired with a stand-alone, fully programmable control system. The control system takes readings from external sensors and automatically adjusts the height and angle of the slats to create the optimum environment for occupants. If the wind speed exceeds a threshold then the blinds are automatically retracted into head boxes for protection. With solar heat gain under control, there is significantly less need for expensive heating and cooling systems. In addition to the external Venetian blinds, Aerofoil Fins have also been installed externally against a curved, glazed façade for a twostorey reception and conference centre. The aerofoil-shaped Fins, each measuring 350mm wide by 60mm thick, are arranged into a series of vertical stacks. The extruded aluminium Fins, which have been precisely curved to follow the contours

of the building, are incorporated into fixed between side plates, creating a series of panels. The curved panels, with horizontal curved Fins, combine to form an effective, passive shading structure preventing excessive solar heat gain and maximising daylight levels. Continuing externally, Levolux also provided an attractive, yet highly ventilated screening solution for a roof plant area. Levolux’s popular XL Screening Louvres were specified, with their ‘Z’ profile, to create a vertical louvred screen, standing 1.6 metres high. The screening louvres, which are set at a pitch of 140mm, combine to form a rectangular screen, extending 55 metres in length and 9 metres in width. Levolux also provided its high performance HP50 Ventilation Louvres, incorporated into 4 panels, each measuring 940mm wide by 740mm high. The ‘S’ profile louvres are used to create a weather-resistant, naturally ventilated façade. The louvres can also be fitted with birdmesh for additional protection. Moving internally, Levolux was invited to supply and install 477 internal roller blinds. 26 motorised Slimlock blinds were incorporated into the scheme. Each blind can be operated using a wireless handset and is fitted with side-guides for increased stability. Levolux’s Slimlock blind system provides maximum light exclusion at the flick of a switch, thanks to brush-fitted, ‘zipped’ side channels and a squeeze bead fitted to the hem bar. A specialist ‘black-out’ fabric was chosen, in a range of complementary colours. Levolux’s 780 manual roller blinds were also used, with 451 blinds fitted throughout the building. The blinds, which feature a cool grey fabric with an openness factor of 3%, are installed in office areas and can be easily raised and lowered using an integral crank handle. The blinds provide occupants with effective control of daylight, without unwanted glare. For long-lasting good looks, external aluminium louvres and associated components have been finished in a durable, dark grey matt powder coating. www.levolux.com Enquiry 103

The visual solidity of the Corian® cladding complements and contrasts with the Victorian stone built original structure, while the Anthracite colour specified is tonally similar to the existing slate roof, while having a lustre that brings the Corian® to life, on the most overcast of days. www.cdukltd.co.uk Enquiry 104

Rå Build Meets The Need For Speed H+H’s Rå Build method has been used by design and build contractor Canning Ericsson to speed construction of a three-storey apartment block on a confined site in Brighton Canning Ericsson was already familiar with the advantages of H+H’s Rå Build method of large format aircrete blocks, the Thin-Joint System and quick-drying Celfix Mortar having used the modern construction method on several of its previous schemes. “We decided to use H+H’s Thin-Joint System again because it is quick and easy to use, it goes up fast and gains structural strength quickly; it’s a really great system,” says Michael Alderton, director of Canning Ericsson. Aircrete’s structural strength was important because the weight of the project’s cast in situ reinforced concrete first and second floor slabs is carried by the High Strength Thin-Joint Blocks that form the inner leaf of the building’s external cavity wall. Construction speed was important to the contractor. “The biggest benefit of using H+H’s Thin-Joint System is the ability to use large format 630mm x 250mm x 100mm wide Jumbo Bloks, which enables the walls to be constructed a lot quicker” says Mr Alderton. The blocks are relatively lightweight and easy to cut to shape in comparison to denser blocks. “The footings were in place mid-October 2014 and by the end of December 2014 we had built the block using aircrete with cast in situ floors and fitted the roof.” In addition to speeding construction the aircrete blocks also help improve the walls’ thermal performance, reduce sound transmission between apartments and improve the airtightness to help the scheme meet the Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3 criteria. Using the Thin-Joint System also helped Canning Ericsson overcome the limited storage facilities on the compact site because the Celfix mortar is delivered bagged and can be mixed in buckets, which eliminates the need to store sand and other materials on site.
