At Heathrow’s Terminal 2B, Balfour Beatty is utilising careful collaboration, sustainable best practices and industry-leading innovation to deliver the works sustainably. To achieve quality and sustainability objectives, Balfour Beatty also worked closely with the T2B supply chain and client Heathrow Airports Limited. Setting a benchmark in sustainability and the first BREEAM certificate for a UK airport building, Balfour Beatty has successfully integrated a range of sustainable initiatives for the new Heathrow Terminal 2B satellite terminal helping the building achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’ for sustainable construction, design and innovation Before work on site could begin, Balfour Beatty developed a Sustainability Action Plan to define what was expected throughout the project’s design, procurement and construction phases. Throughout the design phase, the team focussed on optimisation of design solutions to ensure that efficient systems were developed and incorporated into the final building design. An example of this includes the innovative design of the fire sprinkler system incorporated in the fire protection system will allow HAL to save 300,000 litres of potable water per year by recycling test water. With the project expected to export a large amount of material to landfill, a key driver was a clear commitment to reducing, reusing and recycling materials. Waste reduction innovations on site included the use of over 450,000m3 of London Clay to remediate a local non -operational landfill site. In addition, a large quantity of onsite gravels and concrete arisings were processed and reused under aircraft stands and taxiways. Balfour Beatty continues to set the standard for offsite prefabrication at flagship projects across the UK. At T2B, lean construction and the integration of modularised elements helped to reduce working from height and minimise waste, whilst improving day to day performance and increasing onsite reliability. Further benefits included the coordinated planning of daily activities reducing re-work, standing time and minimising last minute changes to the programme. With modularised mechanical and electrical building services, the T2B project benefitted from programme acceleration, as well as improved quality and health and safety performance. Balfour Beatty has supported HAL in developing and establishing the Heathrow Construction Academy, an initiative to offer training and employment opportunities to members of the 5 local boroughs. Bishop Edward King Chapel Takes The Wood Awards 2013 Gold Award Bishop Edward King Chapel by Niall McLaughlin Architects has taken the Gold Award in this year’s Wood Awards 2013 competition. Announced at the Wood Awards winners’ ceremony held on the 19th November hosted by the Worshipful Company of Carpenters in the City of London, Bishop Edward King Chapel, Ripon College, Oxford took the Structural category prize before being crowned the winner of winners in front of more than 200 leading industry and architectural figures. Chairman of the judges, Michael Morrison of Purcell UK said, “Niall McLaughlin’s Bishop Edward King Chapel is a stunning and worthy Gold Award winner. It embodies

the Wood Awards celebration of excellence in design and craftsmanship in wood, and even exceeds the hope that the building might be ‘a work of art which would touch the spirit’.” The independent judging panel, which includes previous Wood Awards winners Adam Khan and last year’s Gold Award winner David Morley, Hopkins Architect’s Jim Greaves and Andrew Lawrence from Arup, praised the team for its attention to detail, careful use of materials and elegant curved glulam columns and beams which create the light and soaring internal timber structure.

The Wood Awards category winners included The Colyer-Fergusson Building in Kent by Tim Ronalds Architects for the Commercial & Public Access Award; Church Walk in London by David Mikhail Architects for the Private Award – the second year in a row this practice has won the Private category; Magheralin Parish Church in Northern Ireland by Waddington-McClure Architects for the Repair & Adaptive Reuse Award, and the undulating RoominaRoom in London by Atmos Studio for the Small Project Award. In the Wood Awards furniture categories, the Production Made Furniture Award was won by Pengelly Design’s ‘Theo Chair’, and EJ Bespoke Furniture’s chest of drawers ‘Ripples’ in 3D veneer European ash took the Bespoke Furniture Award. ‘Worldscape’, a second Atmos Studio project comprising 16 metres of continuous integrated furniture as a map of the world in Latvian birch plywood with seating for 80 people, was given the Wood Awards Judges’ Special Award. Chair of the Wood Awards furniture judges, Sean Sutcliffe of Benchmark Furniture, said, “Pengelly Design’s Theo chair is a remarkable piece of design and manufacturing. For the first time this year, a surfboard maker was highly commended for their work in wood. Otter Surfboards from Cornwall was praised by the judges for their creativity and exceptional woodworking as well as their work with the National Trust, and “using wood’s best properties – naturally beautiful, strong and light”. This year, the Wood Awards was launched at Ecobuild in March, the shortlisted Furniture categories pieces were exhibited in person at 100% Design - the biggest event during the London Design Festival, and the full shortlist was showcased at Timber Expo in Birmingham, along with a series of talks from selected shortlisted projects. Chair of the judges, Michael Morrison said, “All the projects we inspected were showcasing both the versatility of timber as a building material as well as the great pool of talent in the design and construction industries. Two things were particularly pleasing – the high standards of craftsmanship that we saw and, perhaps more importantly, that we were able to give awards this year to some modest schemes where the selection of timber, the design and the workmanship have produced a splendid result on a tight budget. New Commercial Head For STYROFOAM Producer Chris Gimson is taking over as Commercial Director for STYROFOAM-A and XENERGY insulation manufacturer, Dow Building Solutions, in February 2014. He succeeds Jayne Law, who has been in the position since 2004. Chris joined Dow as part of the acquisition of Flexible Products in February 2000, for which he was European Managing Director. During his Dow career, Chris has been a Senior Account Manager for the cushion packaging business, managed the STYROFOAM business in Ireland and directed the core composite STYROFOAM business. York Handmade Celebrates Its 25th Anniversary The award-winning York Handmade Brick Company, the largest independent brickmaker in the north of England, celebrates its 25th anniversary this month. York Handmade, which has worked on iconic buildings such as the Shard, Highbury Football Stadium and Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, was founded by chairman and manager director David Armitage in 1988. Previously the Alne Brick Company, based in Forest Lane, Alne, near Easingwold, York Handmade now has an annual turnover of £2 million and employs 25 dedicated staff. David Armitage commented: “It has been a hugely enjoyable, though challenging, 25 years. We have grown from a very small brick factory in a North Yorkshire village to a successful and awardwinning brick company that is wellknown and respected on the national stage. “The progress we have made in the last 25 years would not have been possible without the loyal service and dedicated expertise of York Handmade’s management team and our skilled employees in the factory and we owe them all a great deal,” said Mr Armitage. When York Handmade started in 1988, the company inherited a derelict factory, which wasn’t even making bricks at all but was primarily engaged in the production of drainage tiles for agricultural purposes. Mr Armitage explained: “When I bought the factory in 1988, the prime objective was to create a strong local business, employing local people and boosting the local economy. Now, over £2m investment later, the company boasts a dedicated modern handmade brick factory and my objective has been achieved”.

He said: “Like every other SME in the construction industry, York Handmade has had to fight hard over the last five years to stay in business and to progress. We feel we have succeeded in that prime objective and are well placed to go forward for the next 25 years with confidence”. York Handmade has a remarkable record in the Brick Awards during the past decade. These national awards, run by the Brick Development Association in conjunction with Building magazine, are the brick industry’s Oscars. The buildings which won the awards for York Handmade were: Four Oaks in Little Bedwyn, Wilts (Best Single House); Tupgill Cellar, near Middleham, North Yorkshire (Best Craftsmanship); and Chetham’s School of Music, Manchester (Specialist Brickwork Contractor). The judges paid tribute to York Handmade’s work at Tupgill, the home of the famous Forbidden Corner tourist attraction, saying: “It was obvious to pick Tupgill Cellar as the winner of its category. It is magical to look at. A wide variety of handmade specials were personally designed by the manufacturer and the result is outstanding.” And the judges commended Chetham’s School of Music for “being an outstanding showcase for brick. It is a tour de force of brickwork and the beauty of the design, choice of brick and impeccable detail are very difficult to find fault with.” David Armitage added: “It is important to stress that our three winning entries were completely different jobs in design and execution, graphically illustrating our ability to work in a wide variety of colours and styles. We believe we can tackle any brickwork project successfully.” Meanwhile in 2009 the company was short-listed for the Best Educational Building award for its work on De Grey Court at York St John University. www.yorkhandmade.co.uk Enquiry 9

Architects Vote For Monastery In 2013 Brick Awards A new monastery in Liverpool has won this year’s Architect’s Choice Award at the annual Brick Awards which took place on 14th November at the Marriott Grosvenor Square Hotel in London. Impressed by its grace and elegance, over 100 registered architects and architectural students voted for the Carmelite Monastery, which was built for the Carmelite Sisters and completed in March 2013. Designed by architects Austin – Smith: Lord and built by brickwork contractor Nobles Construction, the monastery embodies the daily cycle of prayer, manual labour, communal mealtimes and private reflection whilst being a comfortable and modest home. Silence and light articulates the architecture which is calm, ordered and uplifting. Although modern in its expression, the architecture acknowledges the tradition of monastic design in its form and layout. Monasteries have always been sustainable communities and this building is no exception. Designed to minimise its energy requirements the building incorporates natural ventilation, improved insulation, maximised daylight and renewables such as ground source heat pump and solar water heating. Brickwork as a material was chosen to embody a sense of timelessness, tradition and practicality. Flemish bond was used as the background weave that can be modified by projecting and recessing the headers to add texture and pattern. Thus the headers are projected on the curved facade of the chapel, creating a rich texture that together with the curved form expresses the modest chapel as the most important building in the community.

On the third storey the headers have been recessed to define the datum set at the top of the second storey that acts as a horizontal line tying the composition together. The colour and texture of Wienerberger’s Con Mosso facing brick is soft and rich and equally suitable for internal and external use. The brickwork has been used internally most notably in the chapel and the cloister adding texture and robustness to these spaces. Within the chapel interior the headers project at the higher level, in this instance to break up sound reflections to avoid standing waves setting up. The rich textured outer core of the chapel interior provides the perfect foil to the pure smooth white inner chapel. In addition to the Architect’s Choice Award, there were 13 category awards and the Supreme Winner, each showing excellence in different aspects of design, construction and the use of brickwork. The Carmelite Monastery was also short listed for the Innovative Use of Brick and Clay Award. The Brick Awards is one of Britain’s most respected design competitions. Organised by the Brick Development Association, the annual contest provides the definitive showcase for what brick can achieve with projects being entered from right across the globe. Level Threshold Openings An Easy Method of Ensuring Damp Protection Integrity The Type LTT is a Level Threshold Tray manufactured by Cavity Trays of Yeovil. It provides a uniform standardised construction arrangement that removes risk. By isolating one of the areas most susceptible to damp transference, the Type LTT permits abutting flooring, abutting insulation and DPC’s/membranes to integrate with an inside skin and converge with an exterior skin that itself is isolated from dampness at the point of convergence. The function of the Type LTT is to act as a DPC glove, enveloping the top and sides of the threshold structural masonry. New HELIFIX Crack Injection Kit – For Repairing Cracked Concrete New from structural repair specialists Helifix, the Concrete Crack Injection Repair Kit is a low viscosity, fast curing epoxy sealing system for repairing cracks in concrete. Green Oak’s Controlling Influence Creating buildings using green oak frames delivers a superb result but, with today’s Part L demanding super-insulation levels, the timber’s gradual drying process will lead to serious headaches without the right window design and installation. Traditional exposed frame glazing, where a sealed unit is mounted between two beads fixed between the posts and studs of the frame - with the glass siliconed into position, simply isn’t suitable due to the movement of the building’s green oak structure. Green oak is newly felled timber which has a high moisture content and takes up to five years to dry out. During this time, the cut timbers will shrink so any structure created using green oak will naturally experience movement. This can cause problems for ordinarily fixed elements such as windows. Movement stresses on the window frame will lead to water ingress around the windows, draughts and heat loss – the last things any occupier of a green oak building would expect given the price premium they would have agreed to at the design and commissioning stage. The solution comes with a combination of improved face applied glazing design and carefully controlling the building drying process using the right glass specification. It has been developed by specialist carpenter Black Pig Frame Finishing who have now worked on more than 300 buildings across the UK. Its innovative way to attach thermally superior, weather-tight windows in green oak buildings uses SGG COOL-LITE SKN 174 glass from GLASSOLUTIONS to help manage the drying process of green oak buildings with great success – successfully eliminating problems including water ingress, heat loss caused by draughts and unsightly cracking around windows. Black Pig’s face applied glazing solution involves cladding the entire structural glazing frame to offer protection and provide a continuous waterproof seal. Sealed units then ‘float’ to allow for movement of the frame and all weather seals are EPDM rubber to provide longevity. No silicone or other mastics, which are prone to degradation, are used and drainage is built into the system to extend the life of the sealed units. Manufacturer of the sealed units GLASSOLUTIONS, ensures Black Pig can balance thermal performance with solar control and help green oak building architects manage 20

the drying process over time. It manufactures sealed units with a Swisspacer spacer bar and argonfill using SGG COOL-LITE SKN 174. This delivers a sealed unit with high light transmission and a very low g-value, which reduces solar gain by as much as 30% compared to standard thermally insulating glass. Marmox Thermoblock Supporting Perimeter Energy Saving The issue of heat loss at the perimeter floor/wall junction, as well as other cold bridges around the building envelope can be successfully addressed through the use of Thermoblock, manufactured by Marmox (UK) Ltd. The loadbearing composite product has been developed to be incorporated into various wall constructions as a horizontal layer, equivalent to a course of bricks, in order to address a critical area of heat loss; thereby reducing energy bills and making a significant contribution to SAP (Standard Assessment Procedure) calculations. Each length of Thermoblock is comprised of ultra-high performance XPS insulation, encapsulating miniature columns of concrete; while the top and bottom are covered by alkali resistant glass-fibre mesh, retaining a surface of fibre reinforced polymer concrete to facilitate bonding. Individual units are 65 mm deep and feature a 15 mm overlap at either end, giving them an installed length of 600 mm; they are available in widths of 100 and 140 mm and are installed at the base of the inner leaf to an exterior masonry wall, normally level with the insulation beneath the floor screed. They can, however, be employed within a timber frame construction and at other positions such as beneath window openings or at first floor level, the roof-wall junction and under party walls. Although a conventional DPC should still be incorporated into any wall construction, the impervious nature of Thermoblock means it forms a further horizontal barrier to moisture ingress. Wherever they are installed, the XPS with its ultra-low thermal transmittance increases the path for heat loss, making it a highly effective solution to dealing with the increasingly important effects of cold bridging. To achieve Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes requires a 44 per cent improvement on energy performance set out in the 2006 edition of Part L to the Building Regulations. In the very important area of the wall/floor junction, Enhanced Construction Details can cut heat loss by between 35 and 55 per cent; but utilizing Thermoblocks can reduce CO2 emissions still further to between 60 and 90 per cent, offering an important 22

contribution to the points required in achieving CSH Level 4 or above. With the concrete columns having a y-value of 0.225 W/mK but occupying only 10 per cent of the overall area, compared to the XPS insulation with its thermal conductivity of 0.033 W/mK, the combined y-value is 0.052 W/mK. Crucially, being able to employ a defined, very low thermal transmittance – derived by thermal modelling or measurement – offers a far more advantageous result than adopting the ‘default’ figure offered in SAP. Using standard ACDs will add a heat loss of 0.08 Watts to the U-values for a property, while Enhanced Construction Details can cut this to 0.04 Watts; but incorporating Thermoblock can bring this right down to 0.01 Watts or less. The same principle applies to the European PassivHaus standard or the recently launched Fabric Energy Efficiency Standard (FEES), which the Government is now promoting as the route to achieving Zero Carbon construction. D R Services Introduces Wall Automation D R Services has successfully installed one of the first automatic sliding/ stacking walls in the UK, creating what could be a whole new branch of the construction/ interior design industries. The innovative glazing design company based in Harlow, has been creating sliding stacking walls for about a dozen years, creating some of the most iconic moveable glass walls in shopping centres all over the UK. With the automatic version, the entire divider packs itself into parking bays, or pockets, fitting neatly behind the walls. It looks like there never was a dividing wall there at all. “Typically, the products we are talking about are glass ,” said D R Services director David Jarvis, “Our main feature is single glazed, frameless, toughed, laminated glass with particular interlayers to suit the location. This is a product which is particularly suited to the company, because we have the engineering ability as well as the mechanics of the sliding and stacking walls, which is proven technology.” Of course, even single glazed laminates are quite heavy, yet DRS powers the whole mechanical operation with a 5 amp supply, about the same as you'd use for a model railway! “These panels can be anything up to a third of a tonne but you just move them slower,” said David Jarvis. “We make them as low friction as we humanly can but still ramp up the speed slowly and drive at an appropriate speed. None of these walls will move very quickly because of the safety features. If you want to move them quickly they become a liability.” David continues, “They would stall if anybody got in the way. They're safe now but if you were to drive them quickly you'd need a high power supply and you'd need lots and lots of beams and similar safety devices. These are automated doors or you could say mechanised doors. They are not as the British Standard would describe an automatic door with censors to open and close. You hit a button and they open. You hit another button and they close.” Although the system is brand new, D R Services is already working on two different versions. One has very large and heavy panels moved by a drive mechanism with buzz

bars on the track. Buzz bars are insulated copper shafts with carbon brushes running along them. They are located within the sliding aluminium profile (fixed to the ceiling or the soffit) and create a continuous electrical circuit. The motor is housed in the door. The doors can act intelligently; each can be programmed to perform a unique task, though there is a second system that basically tells each door what to do. “We would select the mechanism that is most appropriate to the particular location,” said David Jarvis. “We have the mechanical engineering skills to physically put all of this together and we also have the electrical engineering skills to interpret and be able to programme doors and walls to suit the locations. If there are problems we are able to understand the problems and get over them rather than bring in specialists. We deal with the entire package.” The first one installed separates a swimming pool and a garden room. It has panels that have six square metres of glass. The building has both Lutron and Crestron home automation systems. As well as the automatic doors, the automation controls the lighting, sounds systems, tv, audio visuals and even the curtains. There are probably 100 control panels in various parts of the building. For those prepared to pay for the wow factor, it is difficult to beat the automatic system. Julie Jarvis pointed out: “We do actually do a simple, low cost system that, for the more normal sort of project budget, can separate off a dining room from a living room with a clear wall, very easily. GROUND BREAKING CHANGE IN FIRE PROTECTION www.nullifire.com

In a real life fire situation, every second can be precious to enable a building to be safely evacuated, as well as for the emergency services to do their work. Ultimately, all precautions from alarms and means of escape to the specification of non-combustible materials or intumescent coatings come down to preserving life and minimizing physical damage. Periods of fire resistance are set by the project team based on both statutory regulation and the specific requirements of each structure; generally rising from 30 minutes to two hours. The length of time to achieve such standards of protection in practice, however, can stretch out to weeks and months, with the fire protection of structural steelwork for major properties often playing a pivotal part in dictating the length of critical path for the building programme. Now, though, as one of the most respected names in the field of intumescent coating systems, Nullifire has brought to the market a radically new technology offering far superior application characteristics to all previous solvent and water based systems; and one that holds the prospect of highly significant time savings for all concerned with the construction process. Dr Simon Jones of Nullifire explains: “SC 901 and SC 902 are based on a patented polymer technology which was originally developed as the base for construction sealants and waterproofing products; so while we are being innovative in utilising it for fire protection, we can be certain of the systems’ weathering characteristics and durability. “At this stage SC901 and 902 have passed all of the fire performance tests and have shown very positive benefits in test applications; while we are now engaged on full scale trials in the field. We have already had a lot of applicators come in for training and what has impressed them is the huge potential for improving speed of application in what is an incredibly competitive market. “Instead of a specialist intumescent coatings contractor taking a couple of weeks to build up a series of perhaps 10 layers to achieve the longer periods of fire resistance, SC901 and SC902 can be applied in a single layer. The initial drying and curing times are also very attractive, so there is great potential for time and cost savings.” The SC901 and SC 902 products are chemically very similar and will deliver the same standards of fire protection; however, their formulation has been fine tuned in terms of their application characteristics, to suit use either on site or in a factory environment.

The SC901 version is designed for application in a controlled environment and therefore offers a very rapid cure time, through what is purely a ‘chemical cure’. A thin film will be dry and resistant to adverse weather within an hour, while the treated steelwork would be ready for shipping within eight hours. Nullifire specifies the use of the Graco XM spray equipment which features two large pumps to deliver the separate components that then come together in a manifold. Although Nullifire use the specialist company Sprayplant to set the rig up correctly to get the optimum atomisation and film build from the

SC901, Nullifire has avoided the trap several intumescent manufacturers have fallen into in the past, of requiring bespoke spraying equipment. It is also user friendly in terms of health risk, having a very low VOC content for a system featuring solvent usage, and actually comes in at 137 grammes per litre – below the 140 g/l limit for a water based product. Then, for work on site, the SC902 has had its curing time slowed down, though it can still be built up to the required thickness as a single layer. It is suitable for use with the standard portable electric spraying systems seen in

use by any coatings applicator such as the Graco Mk V. Importantly, to ensure quality control is maintained out in the field, Nullifire is supplying the two pack silicone PU products in measured ‘kits’ which then just require two to three minutes of mixing for the bllue and white liquids to mix properly. The cure this time relies on drying from the surface down, and will be five to eight times slower. Although slower to cure, the applied product is still weatherproof in only an hour.

In the case of both systems, however, there is unlikely to be any problem with handling the steelwork the following day, while very good resistance to damage is a real benefit. Dr Simon Jones continues saying: “In addition to the speed of application for coatings offering up to two hours’ protection, the other physical characteristics are also highly beneficial and should deliver considerable cost savings. “SC901 and SC902 will remain far more weather resistant than the water based systems which currently dominate the market, which means the classic

required protection period. For the SC901/902 any areas of damage can be trimmed with a craft knife before a small quantity is mixed up and troweled in. Another troublesome situation alleviated is detailing around areas such as bolted connections or flange ends, where intumescent coatings tend to become uneven. construction site scenario where the intermediate floors go in, but the cladding does not get fixed for months – often right through the winter - will not present a headache. And the fast curing but slightly rubbery texture of the products will help withstand chips or other damage by the trade contractors who follow on. Repair or snagging costs prior to handover are therefore likely to be greatly reduced.”

or flat batteries accounted for 30% of all failures in battery-powered smoke alarms. Landlords have a clear Duty of Care to provide adequate fire protection at all times, but can they rely upon tenants changing batteries and not disabling them? The new standards clearly think not. Care still needs to be taken however over the kind of back-up battery used in mains powered alarms. The standard specifically recommends rechargeable Lithium cells for use in two-storey properties and above ground floor flats. While that would seem to imply that replaceable Alkaline battery back-up would be acceptable in other circumstances, experience tells us it’s preferable to stick with nonremoveable long life rechargeable Lithium cells in all installations; it’s best practice, removes the prospect of tampering and therefore gives better protection under Duty of Care. False Alarms Addressed BS 5839-6:2013 revisions also cover, in detail, the best ways to deal with false alarms. Section 12.2, note 3 says: ‘It is also of advantage to provide means for silencing short term unwanted alarms from smoke alarms. A suitable means can comprise an alarm silence facility conforming to the requirements of BS EN 14604, provided the facility can be operated by occupiers of the dwelling when standing at floor level.‘ Most good alarms, including all Aico units, are now fitted with Silence buttons in accordance with BS EN 14604. However, if the alarm is correctly positioned, it is very unlikely that the button can be operated by someone standing at floor level. Therefore, it’s well worth considering adding a wall mounted control switch to any alarm system. This will allow the occupant to Test alarms from floor level, as well as Locate the alarm that triggered a system and Silence the alarms if no fire is present. Control switches have

BS 5839-6:2013, the British Standard for domestic smoke alarm installation, was revised in June of this year. Despite it being a revision rather than an overhaul, nonetheless it has significant implications for specifiers in the housing sector. It’s important to understand not just the technical aspects of the new standard but also the effects these are likely to have on fire safety in the home. For social housing providers and private landlords used to installing battery powered alarms, this is no longer an option, but the changes also require knowledge of other, perhaps previously unfamiliar, fire safety technology. BS 5839-6:2013, the British Standard for domestic smoke alarm installation, was revised in June of this year. Mains Powered Alarms for Rented Properties At Aico, we consider the most important change to BS 5839-6:2013 is that now all rented properties – whether new or existing – should be protected by a Grade D system; that is mains powered smoke alarms with battery back up. This is a very positive step forward as we have always maintained – and the statistics reinforce our view – that in a fire battery smoke alarms cannot be relied upon because the battery may not be present or working. According to DCLG’s ‘Fire Statistics Great Britain, 2011 to 2012’ 39% of all battery-powered smoke alarms failed compared to just 19% of mains-powered alarms. Missing

real benefits to offer, particularly for vulnerable, disabled or elderly tenants. By providing full control while standing at floor level – as the standard recommends - the tenant does not have to try to climb up to reach an alarm, which could result in an accident. In Section 15.5 (relating to Power Supplies), the British Standard recommends that alarms are installed on “a separately electrically protected, regularly used local lighting circuit in which case there should be a means for isolation of the smoke alarm(s) from the lighting circuit (e.g. for maintenance).” Many interpret the statement in 15.5 as requiring an isolation switch or fused spur, but it’s not necessary if you specify the right kind of alarm, as clearly stated in Note 2: “A number of manufacturers use a fixed base for the electrical connections, and the smoke or heat alarm can be readily removed by use of a tool operated release tab, etc.” Aico’s mains powered smoke, heat

and multi-sensor alarms, for example, receive their power through an easi-fit or RadioLINK base. Once you have removed the alarm from the base, the alarm is isolated from the circuit. Protection in Lofts It’s becoming increasingly common these days for electrical equipment – such as inverters for photovoltaic systems, downlighters, water pumps, and heating equipment – to be installed in loft spaces; this has become a new potential source of fire risk. The new standard addresses this for the first time and suggests that a smoke alarm may be appropriate in a loft space where such equipment is present. This recommendation is another significant step forward and something that Aico has recommended for a number of years. While the standard suggests the use of an ionisation type alarm, we suggest that the final choice of alarm technology should be left to the specifier after conducting an individual risk assessment. Loft areas have traditionally been a difficult area to interconnect with hard wiring on a conventional mains powered system and may have been avoided for that reason. However with the introduction of wireless systems it’s no longer a problem as alarms can be interconnected via RF signals rather than expensive and disruptive hard wiring. Multi Sensors Make their Debut The new standard also address multi-sensor alarm technology for the first time. Multi-sensor alarms have been an important new innovation in recent years, allowing specifiers to offer better alarm coverage in areas in particular where there is more than one type of fire risk.vSection 10.1.6 states: “Multisensor domestic smoke alarms are available (e.g. incorporating a smoke sensor and a heat sensor). As in the case of multi-sensor fire detectors used in systems to which BS 5839-1 applies, these have the potential to offer... benefits....such as a broader spectrum of fire detection.’ The standard suggests multi-sensors as an acceptable alternative to optical alarms. “Smoke detectors installed within circulation areas, such as hallways,

Overcoming Obstacles One last new addition worth looking at in detail – because of its complexity – is Section 11.2 , which now makes recommendations for siting smoke alarms where beams are present: “Where structural beams create an obstacle to flow of smoke across a ceiling: 1) if the depth of the beam is greater than 10% of the ceiling height, it should be treated as a wall (i.e. detectors should be provided on both sides of the beam) or, if the beam is less than 600 mm in depth, a detector should be installed on the underside of the beam; 2) in other cases, detectors should not be installed closer to the beam than twice the depth of the beam or 500 mm, whichever is less.” We suggest interpreting this in the following way to achieve Best Practice. If a beam is more than 10% of the height of the room, treat it as a wall and fit an alarm either side of the beam – normal siting advice stands (fit more than 300mm away from walls and obstructions).vIf a beam is more than 10% of the room height, but less than 600mm, fit an alarm on the beam. For example, the average ceiling height is 2400mm, so if the beam is between 240 and 600mm, install the alarm on the underside of the beam. Of course, 600mm is a huge proportion of a 2.4m high room and could severely affect the response time of an alarm, so we recommend following the original recommendation of installing an alarm either side as a precaution. vIf a

beam is less than 10% of the room height, fit one alarm in the room. It must be no closer than twice the depth of the beam or 500mm – whichever is less. For further information about siting around beams, the Aico Specifiers Pocket Book is a useful source of advice. Amendments to BS 5839-6:2013 provide a real step forward in fire safety and, by following the Standards and taking advantage of the best alarm technology and recent innovations, social housing providers can really make life significantly safer for their tenants and meet their Duty of Care obligations to the full. www.aico.co.uk

A multi-sensor alarm that features optical and heat sensing technology detects two very different byproducts of fire – smoke and heat – which gives the best response to all types of fire. Some concerns have been raised about increased false alarms if the environment in which the alarm is sited is less suited to one of the two detection technologies. However, because two separate sensors are being monitored, multi-sensor alarms actually offer improved resistance to false alarms. Good multi-sensor alarms, such as Aico’s Ei2110, also have an automatic dust compensation feature that adjusts for contamination within the sensor whilst still retaining sensitivity to an actual fire.

WHY QUALITY COUNTS IN A MODULAR WIRING SYSTEM www.modularwiring.com

Essentially the circuit lines of a traditional distribution system, a modular wiring system is designed and prefabricated off-site in a plug and play format. When delivered to site, the system requires no hard wiring - every part of the system is connected using colour coded plugs - making it extremely quick and simple to install. The systems are available as radial and ring main up to 32amps. The benefits of such a design are obvious: rapid installation, less labour and a lower skill level, flexibility, quality and lower costs. However, selecting a quality modular wiring system is essential if you are to reap the benefits of this modern building practice. So what constitutes quality?

CABLE 90% of a modular wiring system is composed of cable so quality cable is essential. The only way of guaranteeing this is by third party approval through British Approvals Service for Cables (BASEC). Additional considerations include the bending radius and the choice of cable type.

is where the core is threaded through the conduit. The former is better for the bending radius and protection of cores, reducing the chance of damage and allowing for longer lengths. This in turn allows for greater flexibility in the individual system design for a project. INTERLOCKING PARTS If the interlocking parts are poorly designed or made the system may lose connectivity, making it useless. The plugs should have a robust locking mechanism whilst at the same time be easy to connect at installation or refurbishment stage. TRACEABILITY Traceability in manufacturing has become a major issue in the drive to improve total quality control. But genuine - valuable traceability practice has to include every component in a system; it can’t simply stop at who manufactured the cable as that has very little value and in reality tells you nothing of the system quality. A top notch manufacturer will be able to trace each and every system component. At Modular Wiring Systems we can trace all the way back not just to the cable, but to the source of copper within that cable. For us it’s easier as our parent company Tratos manufactures all of the cables used in our systems in its BASEC approved factory. TESTING Each and every component part - including the copper, the cable, the joins etc - should be tested individually, preferably using ATE (automatic testing equipment) that is fully calibrated. Systems that have undergone such rigorous testing are easy to identify as the manufacturer applies a test sticker with a serial number to every part of the system tested. Batch testing of a system and its components is not acceptable. MANUFACTURER SUPPORT A good, experienced manufacturer should be able to provide you with support and guidance throughout a project to ensure you get the most benefit from using a modular wiring system. That support should include detailed CAD drawings, the allocation of an in-house project engineer for one point of contact throughout the process and the ability to make bespoke product to solve any on site challenges that may arise. The latter aspect can only realistically be achieved if the company has UK manufacturing facilities, as to design, build and supply a bespoke item from abroad is unlikely to meet your time frame. With greater focus than ever before being placed on sustainability and ‘green’ building techniques at the same time as a need to reduce costs, modular wiring systems score high. The bending radius of armoured and unarmoured cable should be seven times the diameter of the cable. Anything less than this and the design of the system may be compromised or the cable become damaged as it is bent beyond its capability. In terms of choice of cable, a quality modular wiring system will be capable of being designed and manufactured from a range of cable types and armouring to meet the specific site requirements. CONDUIT There are two approaches taken by manufacturers: the first and by far the best involves laying armouring over the cores; the second, and to be avoided,

for cutting and fabrication on site and costs are reduced as a system can be installed up to 80% quicker than traditional methods and utilising 70% less labour. But this only applies to a well designed system, manufactured under strict control using quality components. Use a lesser system that scrimps on components, testing etc and you might get away with it. However, the more likely scenario is you spending time and money to put it right and generating a whole lot of bad will in the process.

This exciting, mixed use development includes a Tesco Extra store, additional retail units, car parking and a police station as part of a major regeneration to Woolwich town centre. Timoleon Helps Build Adapted Living Space For Muscular Dystrophy Sufferer Aged Seven Underfloor heating specialist Timoleon was among a number of construction manufacturers who responded to an appeal from a respected television programme, which was seeking to convert a family’s home near Hereford to the needs of their young son who suffers from a life-changing medical condition. Fire-fighter Colin and his wife Clare had already invested a lot of time and effort in creating a comfortable home for their two sons, when Christopher, aged seven, was diagnosed with Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy; a neurological condition which swiftly affects the limbs and neck, requiring the person to rely on a wheelchair. The strategy for the conversion was worked out by occupational health specialists in conjunction with locally based DA Forrest Architectural Services, and involved completely re-building a two-storey section to the seventies style semi-detached property in the Bartestree area of Hereford. A spokesperson for the project team told: “Sadly Christopher’s condition is just going to get worse. He already has to use a wheelchair and the family house just isn’t designed for these access requirements; and mum Clare has trouble getting him into bed when she is there on her own. “Because of behavioural issues associated with the condition, Christopher needs to be on the same level as his parents – so for this reason we planned a two-storey extension incorporating a through-the-floor lift, as well as a tracking and hoist system linking Christopher’s bedroom with a wet room. The whole house will be made wheelchair accessible with doors and openings being widened downstairs.” Timoleon’s contribution to this effort was in supplying its FoilBoard underfloor heating product as part of the build up to the ground floor structure, which was being relaid during the course of the conversion.

Importantly, underfloor heating not only frees up space in dwellings, but also provides an energy efficient and comfortable living environment without the air currents and cold zones common to radiator type emitters. The manufacturer’s engineer spent six hours on site, installing the FoilBoard sections over the concrete sub-floor, these then being overlaid with screed replacement boards which are also available from Timoleon as part of a system that avoids wet trades. There are a number of options within the FoilBoard range, including a modular version for use with suspended timber floors or ceilings. The FoilBoard Floating as employed in the Hereford home can feature either high-strength CFC free polystyrene of wood fibre insulation and presents parallel grooves into which the underfloor heating pipe is laid. Tongue and groove boards are then laid installed above the aluminium diffuser as a floating floor offering excellent heat distribution. The FoilBoard was installed throughout the conservatory extension with panels being cut to size where necessary, and the special end units create the return loops so that pipes are supported throughout the whole of their run. FoilBoard also lends itself to the creation of different heating zones in larger properties. 40,000SqM Roof Area Successfully Drained By Dallmer RDC, a world leader as an IT hardware disposal and computer recycling company recently purchased a former Crittall Windows factory in Braintree, opened by Margaret Thatcher in 1990. The building had been left empty for five years and was in a poor state of repair. Due to the nature of RDC’s business, it was essential for the building to be completely water tight. Complete Projects CDM of Sheffield, a family owned and operated specialized construction business, who partner Dallmer Ltd. for installations of their SuperDrain siphonic rainwater drainage, was called in to upgrade the water drainage from the roof coordinated with gutter repairs. A quick but cost effective solution was essential. Over the years there had been several attempts to eradicate leaks caused by gutters over flowing. These were due to drains wrongly located or added as ad hoc overflows instead of being integrated in the various siphonic systems. Pipework, originally installed with inadequate support was sagging in many places and had also been damaged by forklift truck misuse. Multiple leaks from around drains and from gutter joints were also revealed. Complete Projects made a detailed survey and a recalculation of the flows in the different siphonic systems, using Dallmer’s latest SuperDrain siphonic drainage calculation programme. With this updated plan, fully compliant with BS8490 and meeting the requirements of the Siphonic Roof Drainage Association (SRDA), they then organised the replacement of the outlets in the gutters, synchronized with the gutter repairs, as well as the connection of new outlets to the revised and refurbished internal pipework. For this work Complete Projects eventually used a total of fifty-four Dallmer D62 PVC flange siphonic roof drains, each one placed to match the re-calculated siphonic roof drainage system, properly fixed in the gutter and bonded to the lining. Dallmer drains carry a 10 year warranty. Rehanging the entire existing internal pipework with SRDA and BS8490 approved components will eradicate additional problems caused by sagging pipe sections. The result was a refurbished system, which avoided the replacement of the internal pipework, a far longer and more expensive option. The client company RDC were able to hold the opening ceremony in June this year, knowing that they had a watertight roof over their heads, thanks to the skilful work carried out by Complete Projects and the high quality of the Dallmer roof drains. www.dallmer.com Enquiry 51

Cantifix Brings Natural Light To Oxfordshire Home This property in rural Oxfordshire was adapted in 2012 to open up the corner of its large kitchen, and to bring in plenty of natural light. Cantifix designed and installed a Sky-Frame configuration that involved 8 metres worth of doors. All 4 panels can slide, and the doors also open at the corner to create a stunning and technically intriguing façade – as well as allowing a great view of the beautiful countryside around the property. Sky-Frame doors were the perfect product for this home, with their slim frames complementing the clean design of the kitchen perfectly. A Unique Fire Protection Solution St Pancras Chambers have enjoyed extensive restoration work, with London & Continental Railways working with Manhattan Loft Corporation to turn the oncederelict hotel into a 5 star Renaissance Marriott hotel with 244 bedrooms, 2 restaurants, 2 bars, a health and leisure centre, a ballroom, 20 meeting and function rooms, and 67 private apartments and penthouses.

Fire prevention Products London, were approached and after an extensive survey developed a solution perfect for the job. The Envirograf EP/CP coating was specified. EP/CP is an intumescent coating that expands in a fire offering an excellent insulation quality to the substrate structure above. However, due to the importance of the building project and the sensitivity of the original features a test was commissioned. The test house built an exact simulation of the complex ceiling steel structure that also comprised of the lath system.

During this restoration work a particular problem was identified that required an innovative solution. Many original lath and plaster ceilings required upgrading to a 60-minute fire rating. These ceilings often included ornate plaster castings dating back to the original construction period and were therefore protected under the Grade 1 rating. These ceilings were also unique in their construction.

Carried out at Warrington Test House according to the principles of BS 476:Part 20:1987 the test was a total success achieving the 60 minute requirement leading to the Envirograf EP/ CP being specified and now used throughout the St Pancras Chambers project playing a crucial role in restoring the original magnificence of one of London’s most important buildings! www.envirograf.com Enquiry 53

The laths were fixed to a complex steel beam sections suspended from the concrete floor above, so whatever fire protection was to be used it not only needed to be light in weight but also able to offer an insulation barrier that would prevent these metal beams from buckling in heat, which would inevitably cause the ceiling to collapse.

How To Prevent This From Happening? The exciting idea of the Jellyfish theatre was developed by an organisation called an Art’s charity called the Red Room. The idea behind the project was to engage the local community in creating and building its own theatre through volunteers and local discarded materials. Designed by Martin Kaltwasser a German architect and conceptual artist the building was the first fully functioning theatre made entirely from recycled and reclaimed materials. There were no fixed plans or drawings it just developed organically dependent on what materials could be found. The building has a strong very basic steel frame to keep its structure in check and yet beyond this basic architectural necessity, everything is improvised; from wooden pallets to MDF sheeting. What’s so unique about this project is that it was not just the materials that were free, but the time and skill of unemployed architects, along with carpenters and people who just walked of the street from their lunch hour to lend a hand. There were over 81 volunteers, 4,200 hours and the use of over eight hundred pallets, 750 square metres of plywood as well as other sheet materials including MDF. However, as the opening date came into sight the London Fire Brigade expressed a serious concern over the safety of the theatre. Constructed out of many wood types and composite materials the issue of fire safety was raised. In the event of a fire this structure was highly flammable and an effective fire protection solution that would give a Spread of Flame Class 0/1 rating was sought. De-Mountable Wall Panels In DuPont™ Corian® Offer Peace Of Mind In A Flood-Risk Zone For The Burmington Mill Christian Centre Old mill buildings can offer fascinating potential for restoration and repurposing, but as by nature they are located near water sources, they can be at risk from flooding. Such was the dilemma faced by the Green Hill Outreach Trust, a Christian charity that runs a community and conference programme from the Burmington Mill, an 18th century former flour mill. In July 2007 the worst floods in the Shipston on Stour area of Warwickshire in over one hundred years washed seven feet of muddy water into the ground floor, destroying the fixtures and fittings and resulting in a major insurance claim. While the claim was fully settled by the insurance company, the risk factors meant that costs were bound to escalate and the centre was faced with two choices: A doubled premium with an excess of £22,000 – or renovations to make the interior of the ground floor more ‘water-friendly’ and therefore not requiring cover against flooding. The latter seemed the most sensible and affordable choice for the charity, although it meant some careful research into the most appropriate solutions for such an adaptable design. A concept began to crystallise to create de-mountable wall-panels that could be removed in the event of a flood warning and then replaced afterwards – preferably in a sturdy material that could survive any damage should the waters rise too quickly. The answer soon presented itself in the form of DuPont™ Corian® high-tech surface. Fran Wilson of the Green Hill Outreach Trust explains, “It was while at the Grand Designs Live exhibition in Birmingham where we looking for a ground source heating system that we first came across DuPont™ Corian® and on finding out more about this beautiful, silky-feeling, non-porous material, it became clear that it might be the ideal solution for our new wall-coverings.” The charity began discussions with Geoff Swift, Technical Consultant at CD UK Ltd, the distributors of DuPont™ Corian® in the UK, as to whether the material was suitable for the intended use and how best to apply it. In the event of

another flood it would be necessary to easily remove the panels, dry out the walls and then replace the panels quickly and easily, with a minimum of disruption to the daily life of the centre, and minimal financial implications. Challenges included the uneven walls of the old building and the fact that the panels would have to sit above non loadbearing plinth heaters 9which can simply be hosed down and dried out after a flood), so would need to be both de-mountable and fully supported by the wall structure. Furthermore, the renovation design for the ground floor, including a new refectory, kitchen, chapel and main foyer (159 square metres in all), incorporated some curving stud walls and decorative features which would require individual customisation. DuPont™ Corian® proved to be typically adaptable in meeting all the key requirements for this unique project. Easily workable into the size, shape and form required and being lightweight yet robust enough to serve this particular purpose, the material was fabricated into panels that were then mounted using an ingenious system of aluminium rails and ‘industrial-strength’ Velcro for rapid removal in emergencies. Each panel is numbered and cross referenced to the mounting system for equally easy replacement into the correct position. The colour chosen for this application was Mojave, a subtle neutral tone from a carefully developed and exclusive palette for DuPont™ Corian® of over eighty choices, and the material has also been used to create bespoke furniture features in the Mojave and Medea colours, as well as seamlessly integrated worksurfaces and sinks for the refectory kitchen. Fran Wilson continues, “We are absolutely thrilled with the choice of DuPont™ Corian® for our ‘water-friendly’ renovation. This design is not only highly practical, but also has resulted in a quiet, minimalistic elegance, which is a delight to the team and all our visitors. Selectaglaze Helps Modernise “A Model Of Social Housing & Urban Living” The World War II Blitz saw the devastating destruction of vast areas of the City of London. Following the war, the local authority urgently needed to provide “general needs” council housing for the multitude of people who served or worked in the City, particularly single people and young couples. In 1951 a competition was announced inviting architects to design an estate within the 7 acre Golden Lane area of East London. The competition attracted dozens of entrants but was eventually won by Geoffrey Powell. Powell and two of his fellow lecturers in architecture at Kingston Polytechnic (now Kingston University School of Architecture), entered the competition on the understanding that whom so ever won, all three would work together on the project. Three decades later the resulting partnership of Peter (Joe) Chamberlin, Geoffrey Powell and Christoph Bon went on to design the neighbouring Barbican Centre. In addition to housing, the estate provides social facilities for residents, including a swimming pool, gym, nursery, pub, tennis courts (originally created as a bowling green), together with police and estate offices all combining to create an “urban microcosm” in line with the local authority’s post-war planning and housing commitment to quality design for urban living. The development of multi-storey buildings provided a combination of studio and one bedroomed flats, 554 in total, set within beautifully landscaped grounds. When completed, the estate became a symbol of post-war recovery, regarded as a model of “social integration” with early tenants including caretakers, clergymen, clerks, doctors, office cleaners, police officers and secretaries. The Estate saw further development during the late 1950’s-early 1960’s and is now home to 1,500 people with approximately half of the properties having been sold on long leases under the “Right to Buy” Scheme

launched in 1980; the remainder having been retained by the City of London Corporation for letting at affordable rents. In the 1990’s the estate received Grade II and Grade II* Listing as buildings of “special architectural interest” in view of its importance as an example of post-war residential architecture. Listing restricts owner’s freedom to make permanent modifications to individual dwellings, as is the case with the original aluminium windows which, in most instances, do not meet modern standards of thermal and noise insulation. As the UK’s leading designer and manufacturer of secondary glazing systems, together with their unparalleled credentials working alongside Heritage bodies within Listed and sensitive buildings, Selectaglaze was the obvious choice to consult to provide a solution to the problems associated with the windows. Selectaglaze and Diamond Architects worked closely together on meticulous detailing of the secondary glazing. In order to meet the City of London's exacting conservation requirements to obtain Listed Building consent the secondary glazing was designed so that it does not disturb the existing slim window framing and is not externally visible. The maisonette shown here was treated with Selectaglaze’s Series 10 slimline horizontal sliding units in the lounge and bedrooms, including one special unit which was designed to allow the sash to slide into an adjacent pocketed wall, thus remaining concealed when opened. A Series 90 vertical sliding unit was installed behind the upper sections of a “monumental” floor to ceiling window in such a way that the secondary glazing is demountable to ensure unimpeded maintenance access to the original sliding sash window. The anodised aluminium finish to the secondary units was specified to closely mimic the finish of the original aluminium windows in order to retain the character and internal design of the property. Howe Green Is Up To Speed With Crossrail Howe Green’s involvement with Crossrail is gaining momentum as the specialist manufacturer works to provide easy access to building services at various sites, including those at Canary Wharf. At Adams Place on the approach to Canary Wharf, a series of large linear brick planters spanning over 4m2 each is under construction. They will house contemporary LED lighting designed to add to the dynamics of the area’s striking urban landscape. Howe Green worked with the external stone contractor Szerelmey Ltd, to develop a bespoke wall access cover encasing power supplies and circuitry feeding the lights and ensuring ongoing access for maintenance is quick and easy. The stylish wall access covers are manufactured from 5mm stainless steel, as opposed to 1.5mm for the standard Waldor. These custom-made covers are lockable for added security and feature a broad show edge creating maximum aesthetic contrast against the smooth, glazed planters. Howe Green’s 1050 Series stainless steel floor access covers have also been manufactured to order for the walkways of Adams Place, each with an additional load bearing specified to accommodate the latest in aerial high-rise fire fighting appliances. Trend Drives Energy Savings At Jaguar Land Rover Trend Control Systems has played a key role in helping Jaguar Land Rover achieve significant energy savings and meet its sustainability based objectives. A contributing factor in this area is the use of Trend’s Building Energy Management System (BEMS) at Gaydon. During the five-year period up to 2012, the Trend BEMS delivered considerable cost savings – the equivalent of 4,271,544kWh and 1,674 tonnes of CO2. To put this into perspective, these quantified CO2 savings are equivalent to providing lighting for 4,082 houses carbon free for a year. Carea Cladding Chosen For New John Lewis Store

The Eircom exchange building, constructed in the 1970’s, consists of a rendered exterior of architectural interest and features curves and round “porthole” style windows. The exterior render was suffering with a high degree of cracking. Repairs to the render were carried out using Betofix RM, a fast cure feather edge repair mortar prior to application of the coating system. Remmers Elastoflex system was chosen to accommodate the anticipated movement and give a high degree of finish to the exterior. The Elastoflex system incorporates mesh reinforcement within a highly elastic coating compliant with EN1504 – surface protection coatings. At the £8.5 million refurbishment of an ageing multi-storey building into a new John Lewis department store in Exeter, Carea Ardal cladding has been specified to create the building’s new eye catching, decorative façade. Originally concrete clad and comprising two eight storey towers, Glenn Howells Architects was appointed to create a stylish and contemporary exterior. A connecting four storey extension was created which was clad in glass and a permanent ceramic artwork. For the building’s larger tower, Ardal rain screen cladding was specified in a speckled Névé finish to create an attractive appearance of stone and curtain walling. Laminating History Abet Laminati has opened a museum to celebrate its 50th anniversary. The displays, at the company’s Bra factory near Milan, are organised chronologically to take the visitor on a historical tour of laminates in design. BASF Phase Change Materials Put To The Test A new plasterboard material using Micronal® phase change material from BASF, the chemical company, is being trialled in the Mark Group Eco House at the University of Nottingham. In this instance the Micronal is used in the new Comfortboard plasterboard from Knauf. The house has been built to demonstrate some of the most recently developed technology for energy efficient housing with a view to monitoring the performance of the house over a period of years. In the sun space area two types of plasterboard from Knauf have been installed. One is a standard gypsum plasterboard, the other is the Knauf Comfortboard which contains the Micronal phase change material (PCM). PCMs use the principle of latent heat to produce their temperature stabilisation effect. Micronal consists of microscopic particles of wax encased in a tough polymer shell. As the temperature rises, the wax melts and draws heat energy out of the surrounding atmosphere. When the temperature falls the wax returns to a solid state releasing its heat back into the atmosphere. Micronal can be incorporated into a range of building materials and the Comfortboard product from Knauf enables it to be used within standard domestic interiors. The effect is to stabilise internal temperature, preventing overheating during the day and releasing warmth back into the house during the cooler night time period. The ability of PCMs to effect this change in the laboratory is not in question, but the installation in the Mark Group house allows the effect to be measured in a living environment. The University of Nottingham’s Department of Architecture and Built Environment has set up a testing routine where the heat flux across the surface of the board is continually monitored for both the standard plasterboard and the Knauf Comfortboard, enabling a scientifically robust comparison to be made. The Mark Group house is the sixth house in the Creative Energy project at Nottingham. Bespoke Fakro Flashings For Luxury Highland Log Cabins Fakro has supplied 31 FTP-V centre pivot and FPP-V top hung and pivot roof windows with bespoke flashings for use on luxury selfcatering log cabins at Eagle Brae in the Highlands. The first phase of hand-built, Canadian red cedar cabins saw architects Maxwell & Co of Inverness use windows individually and in horizontal combination. Project architect Steven Caudry commented, “At the time of specifying roof windows we had become aware of Fakro following a CPD presentation. A key element of the project was our client's requirement for green roofing using indigenous wild grasses. The roof windows were to be fitted into waterproofed timber boxes raised above the vegetation. Discussion with Fakro’s local Specification Manager revealed the company’s ability and willingness to offer bespoke flashings to suit our unique details. A period of time followed in which detailed drawings were exchanged with the company’s research and development team in Poland to ensure flashings would suit the details being formed on site. Sika Ensures Buses Run Smoothly On Luton-Dunstable Busway Sika concrete admixtures were used in the production of high quality precast concrete beams and pads on the £91 million Luton Dunstable Busway. Sika® Viscocrete® 25MP concrete admixture was an important ingredient in the production of the precast beams that make up the bus track and the pads to which they are bolted, ensuring that the concrete moved freely through the precast moulds, fully encapsulating the steel reinforcement. Another requirement of the project was that the concrete achieved high early strength, enabling the precast moulds to be speedily and efficiently turned around. SE Controls Helps Create A Stimulating Learning Environment At Passmores Academy Passmores Academy in Harlow is using a natural ventilation system from leading smoke and natural ventilation specialist, SE Controls, to provide a comfortable and stimulating learning environment for pupils while helping to reduce the school’s carbon footprint. A range of low impact design features and sustainable technologies have been incorporated in the BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rated school, including solar shading, biomass boilers and energy efficient glazing together with the use of a natural ventilation strategy to improve and mange indoor air quality while reducing the need for mechanical cooling. To provide the level of control and flexibility required for the school’s natural ventilation system to operate effectively within the pre-defined set points, SE Controls supplied and installed 7 OS2 control panels to operate the rooflights, atrium louvres and entrance screens. In addition, the company also supplied and installed the rooflight and window actuators through specialist glazing contractor, English Architectural Glazing and were responsible for commissioning the complete natural ventilation system, which is interfaced with the school’s building management and fire safety system. SE Controls’ Project Manager, Darren Wainwright, explained: “Indoor air quality in schools is a vital consideration as it not only manages the temperature within the building, but more importantly, the level of carbon dioxide present, which has been proven to reduce learning ability if it exceeds pre-defined national guidelines. Kährs Specified At Resplendent Mansion, With A Colourful Past Kährs Oak Ember has been installed throughout Plas Tan Y Bwlch – a resplendent Grade II listed Georgian and Victorian Mansion in West Wales, and former rock star’s retreat. The converted property includes 13 individually designed apartments, with stunning coastline views. Kährs wood flooring was chosen to bring a warm, rustic look, in contrast to the elegant, pale-toned decor and chic, contemporary kitchens. Situated besides the Welsh Coastline to Aberystwyth, Plas Tan Y Bwlch was built by a Napoleonic War hero. In the late 1940’s, it played a major role curbing a typhoid epidemic, and was then a college hall of residence before becoming a rock star’s retreat for Uli Jon Roth – guitarist with The Scorpions. In 2007, local developer – Rheidol Developments Ltd – bought the mansion at auction and with main contractor – Lawrence & Williams – commenced a drawn-out planning and lengthy renovation process. Plas Tan Y Bwich has been sensitively refurbished, retaining many of its original features, whilst benefitting from the specification of modern, eco-friendly materials.
