Offsite Solutions Wins Award Commendation For Its Latest Innovation In Bathroom Pod Construction Offsite Solutions, the UK’s leading bathroom pod manufacturer, has received an industry award commendation at this year’s Offsite Construction Awards for its latest innovation – demountable GRP bathroom pods. This advancement in bathroom pod technology, developed for buildings with restricted access, was highly commended in the Product Innovation of the Year category. The Offsite Construction Awards celebrate the best in precision building design and delivery, rewarding outstanding examples of prefabrication and factory-based products and systems, which are helping to create a better built environment – more sustainably, cost effectively, and with greater efficiency. Commenting on the award commendation, James Stephens, Managing Director of Offsite Solutions, said, “We were delighted to receive this latest accolade. It is fantastic to have such recognition from our industry for our commitment to design and innovation. Bathroom pods had previously been limited to new build. The development of our demountable solution has expanded the application of offsite to refurbishment and conversion projects.” Demountable bathroom pods radically reduce work on site, and offer the superior and consistent quality of factory-built bathrooms. Eight GRP pods can be reassembled on site in just one day with a three-person team. This compares to site-built bathrooms on a typical scheme, which can take 6-12 weeks to complete requiring up to 15 different trades and a high level of site management and supervision. In refurbishment and conversion projects, the
only access may be through the window openings of an existing building – or internally via the main entrance and stairwells – and this may not be sufficient for a full-sized pod. The panel sizes of a demountable GRP pod are specially designed to ensure full access is achievable. Now available in the complete range of GRP bathroom designs from Offsite Solutions, the demountable option has a unique sectional design where the shower tray forms part of the floor and the wall panels create the shower enclosure. Holes for sanitaryware are pre-drilled and only the shower door is then installed on site. The pod walls are completely vertical with 90° corners – unlike pods created from complete GRP moulds which have tapered walls – so integration is very simple. Around 1,500 of Offsite Solutions’ GRP demountable pods have already been installed. Applications include student residences, military accommodation, hotels, apartments, care homes, and hospitals – both new build and refurbishment projects. Offsite Solutions offers a comprehensive and expanding range of bathroom pods to suit different building types and applications. Options include steelframed pods with traditional tiled finishes for high-end apartments, student residences and hotels; robust and low maintenance GRP composite pods for student accommodation, care homes, social housing and healthcare, and hybrid pods for specialist projects. TPG Are Celebrating 50 Years PG – The Parkside Group Limited would like to take this opportunity to thank all their architectural, contractor and fabricator clients as they celebrate their 50th year and welcome in their Golden anniversary. As an independent, privately owned British company, The Parkside Group Limited shares it’s remarkable history and here highlights its ambitious strategy for the future. In 1967, London, a joinery business was founded with a start-up loan of a mere £300. This small enterprise has now grown into The Parkside Group Limited which includes the market leading brands of Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems, Axim Architectural Hardware and Alu-Timber. Hardwired within the DNA of a business that has survived and thrived for over 50 years is customer service. To put this longevity in perspective, when The Parkside Group Limited was founded, NASA had not yet taken a giant leap for mankind and landed on the moon. Since 1967 The Parkside Group Limited has worked through great recessions, 3-day weeks and the Black Monday crash, whilst always maintaining its unique customer service ethos; working with customers to supply innovative solutions that make their businesses profitable. The Parkside Group Limited actively seeks to supply solutions and market leading delivery, that provides the market with cost efficiencies which stand the test of time. Examples of this are operating a 100% in-stock philosophy and twice weekly delivery service, so fabricators can utilise all the cost savings of a JIT policy and for our specification clients creating bespoke aluminium profiles & systems that provide fast-track, robust solutions. In 1987 Axim Architectural Hardware joined the group and the famous TC-8800 Transom Closer stormed the door hardware market, and still today Axim is the number 1 branded architectural door closer for reliability and performance. To celebrate the Golden Anniversary, The Parkside Group Limited has a new 6
brand identity to take them through the next 50 years of ambitious plans. The Parkside Group Limited, now TPG, uses the heritage of the diamond logo, branding aluminium with “TPG” to reassure its partners of the TPG mark of quality. This is backed up with a new website which outlines the Group’s TPG: 2025 strategy, highlighting the processes that have, and always will be, critical to the businesses success. In 2017, TPG:2025 has never been more important, as it aligns with the Government’s “Construction: 2025” objectives. By publishing our TPG: 2025 strategy, TPG will continue to be the partner of choice for the design and delivery of innovative building envelope solutions to the construction industry. TPG is proud to be a highly responsive, service orientated, independent business that is known to help, support and value its employees, customers, suppliers and business partners. TPG’s goal is to be a company that is a dynamic leader, respected for its professionalism, customer focus and entrepreneurial spirit now and in the future. The cornerstone of TPG: 2025 is its Innovation Strategy. TPG’s Innovation Strategy introduced the Stage Gate process into New Product Development to take advantage of technological advances in terms of materials, performance and production methodologies. A cross function team works together to research and deliver new products to program, to provide partners with a future proof supplier that develops products that will meet the market’s requirements both now and in the future. The competitive advantage of the innovation strategy provides “fast to market” new products that exceed the offer of the competition at a costefficient price. Examples of this are the launch of Comar 6EFT Curtain Walling suite, a system with glazing sizes up to 54mm and high-span additional mullions and transoms, that have the highest Ixx and Iyy values in the industry. This offers wider spans with smaller box sizes, providing value engineered solutions for designers and contractors alike. Marking the 50th anniversary with such innovative products, TPG, with its market leading brands, will continue to supply innovative solutions that make customers’ businesses profitable now and in the future. www.parksidegroup.co.uk www.comar-alu.co.uk

UK’S Leading Bathroom Pod Manufacturer On Target For Record Year With £30M Of Orders In Last Six Months Offsite Solutions, the UK’s leading bathroom pod manufacturer, has secured £30m of orders in the last six months – a record order intake in the history of the business. This unprecedented performance is a 50 per cent increase on the same period last year, and has secured projects for the business from 2017 through to 2019. It is a reflection of the increasing demand for pods, which improve the quality, speed and efficiency of bathroom construction. Offsite Solutions has seen a significant increase in orders and enquiries for residential schemes, particularly mixed-use developments and in the build-torent sector which is performing strongly in urban centres across the UK. Other trends reflected in the latest order intake include more interest in factory-built bathrooms from the care homes sector and an increase in the scale of those projects, particularly from the larger care home providers. University students are demanding higher specification and 4*+ standard living facilities and the competition for places means the accommodation provided has to meet those requirements. As a result, steel-framed bathroom pods with traditional tiled finishes are increasingly specified for high-end student residences. Commenting on this year’s record order intake, James Stephens, Managing Director of Offsite Solutions, said, “It is extremely positive to see such a strong order performance, which is testament to the hard work, skills and commitment of all our staff across the business. We are continuing to invest in product 8
design, unrivalled quality control, and in our manufacturing capacity to meet the needs of our diverse customer base.” In July this year, Offsite Solutions announced a £5m investment programme to expand its production facilities in Somerset to meet the growing demand for its factory-built bathrooms. This will be the biggest expansion programme in the history of the company. The first phase of the expansion is already complete – a new 45,000sqft production facility that has doubled capacity for steelframed bathroom pods. A £3m investment will bring the company’s production operations together in a new, purpose-designed, state-of-the-art factory. Offsite Solutions offers a comprehensive and expanding range of bathroom pods to suit different building types and applications. Options include steelframed pods with traditional tiled finishes for high-end apartments, student residences and hotels; robust and low maintenance GRP composite pods for student accommodation, care homes, social housing and healthcare; hybrid pods for specialist projects, and award-winning demountable GRP pods for ease of installation in refurbishment schemes. Why Hydrogen Rich Water In Your Home? Over the last few hundred years, hydrogen gas has demonstrated a therapeutic effect on over 150 human diseases, as well as enhanced health and wellbeing. As revolutionary as this may be, what exactly is hydrogen? Furthermore, why should hydrogen be included in your water? The people of Japan have been bathing in Hydrogen Rich water for centuries, their natural hot springs, known as Onsens, are sought after for their salubrious and invigorating effects. It is well documented that dissolved Hydrogen gas is what gives the waters of Nordenau, Germany and Tlacote, Mexico, their medicinal prowess. 1978 marks the earliest record of hydrogens’ medicinal properties, where cases of inflammation were successfully treated. The topic did not gain true popularity among scientists until 2007, when an article on the benefits of hydrogen was published in the prestigious journal of Nature Medicine. Hydrogen is colourless, odorless, tasteless and nonmetallic. It is the lightest and simplest element in our known universe, expressed as the symbol ‘H’. 12
It is comprised of just a single electron and proton. Under regular conditions it exists primarily as molecular hydrogen (H2 gas). In this form, hydrogen has been shown to exert an extensive range of therapeutic effects. When H2 gas is present in water it is referred to as Hydrogen-enriched water and is simply conventional water (H2O) that contains dissolved hydrogen gas (H2). For example, there are carbonated soft drinks such as sodas and sparkling waters that contain dissolved carbon dioxide gas (CO2). In contrast water that contains dissolved hydrogen gas, is the best bet for a longer, healthier life. Hydrogen is the smallest molecule in the universe; this minuscule proportion allows for a smooth diffusion into the sub-cellular compartments of the mitochondria and other locations in the human body. www.aquatiere.co.uk Footnote: *Aquatiere does not recommend those types of beverages for improving health.

Independence, Inclusivity And Respect With multigenerational living on the rise, Housing Association properties must accommodate the varying needs of residents of a range of ages and abilities. Daniel Ward, Senior Ceramics Product Manager for Twyford, looks at the options in the bathroom; ensuring independence and inclusivity for all. Housing Association properties need to deliver on a number of levels, meeting the needs of the variety of tenants that may walk through their doors, with robust, cost-effective yet quality products installed to withstand often high volumes of traffic. With the bathroom so essential to everyone, choosing solutions that are accessible and practical is very important. This is particularly relevant where more than one generation is living under the same roof - recent research (www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-36396217) suggests households containing two or more families will rise from 1.5 million to 2.2 million by 2025. Apart from the nuts and bolts of sanitation, other considerations, such as storage or easier cleaning, will make life easier for occupants. Accessibility The first consideration for any bathroom is its accessibility; can it be used by most people? Can the basin be reached, the taps be turned on, is washing (bath or shower) safe and simple, and is getting on and off the WC an easy task? Basic but essential elements that will help tenants keep safe and those with mobility issues maintain their independence.
•
Taps: Choose thermostatic, lever taps that are easy to turn on for young or arthritic fingers and prevent scalding. • Showers: In general, showers are easier to access than baths. Flush to the floor shower trays will prevent slipping and the incorporation of a seat is a great option for anyone unable to stand for long periods of time. • Baths: Baths featuring head rests, seats and a wider edge (ideal for a parent or carer to sit on) will improve washing options for the very young and elderly. • Basins: Short projection, wide basins are easier to access by wheelchair users, as well as looking modern and stylish. When incorporated with short projection cupboard space underneath, easy-access storage is also covered. Focus All Colours
14
• •
WCs: Comfort height WCs are a great option for those with mobility issues and are far easier to get on and off if in a wheel chair, making no difference to able bodied users. Flooring: Choose non-slip, textured flooring to prevent unnecessary falls.
Practicality Beyond safety and usability concerns, a bathroom that works well for multiple occupants of varying ages and abilities must have storage at its core. Everyone needs their own space and by including well-thought out options to tidy away toiletries, the room will appear less cluttered and be easier to clean. However cramped the conditions, there is usually some form of storage that can incorporated. Tall, tower units, for example, make use of the unused space up the wall, providing multiple shelves so all the family can have their own. In addition, storage can be included under basins, in the recess under the bath and even in movable stools. Practicality also extends to how easy the room is to clean; a particular concern for vulnerable tenants. Promoting ‘easy cleaning’ is also something landlords will support, helping to encourage residents to keep properties in good order. When it comes to the WC, an area most associated with germs, Rimfree toilets, which were originally developed to meet the stringent demands on healthcare buildings, are an ideal solution. Wall-hung WCs, basins and even furniture are the direction modern bathrooms are moving, offering stylistic as well as practical benefits. By removing pedestals, floor-standing pans and legs, dust and germs have nowhere to collect and cleaning around and underneath them is easy. Combining Rimfree technology with wall-hung is the perfect combination. With an aging population, rising house prices, rents and tuition fees forcing young people to stay at home for longer and the benefits of ‘live-in’ babysitters for working parents, multigenerational living is a trend that’s set to endure. Housing Associations have a commitment to meet the requirements of the changing family, while keeping tenants safe. By choosing quality, fit for purpose solutions, bathrooms will not only last longer, they will hopefully also be respected. www.twyfordbathrooms.com

Kalwall® Sheds Light On Education Kalwall® translucent cladding has been extensively used for the impressive refurbishment of the main teaching block at Featherstone High School in Southall, Middlesex. The renovation required removal of the old concrete spandrel panels, repairs to the concrete structure and then over-cladding with Kalwall panels supported on a new steel frame which was added to extend the floor space. The build was completed in two phases over the course of a year while the school continued to operate. The ability to keep the school functioning while the work was completed meant minimum disruption to staff and students. The two fully replaced elevations are a perfect example of how Kalwall can be used for the refurbishment of old and failing cladding and for aged buildings. The new façades allow floor to ceiling diffused and healthy daylight
to flood the interior while providing privacy and removing any distractions. An integrated row of clerestory windows provides ventilation and limited views to the outside. Studies show there is a high correlation between daylighting and increased human comfort. Kalwall eliminates all shadows and glare and the stark contrasts of light and shade which not reduces eye fatigue and enhances concentration. The system also enhances simplicity by doing away with the need for blinds, curtains or solar control. Even on cloudy days, the interior is flooded with natural daylight, which means less artificial lighting and, because Kalwall is highly insulating, energy costs are reduced. The standard Kalwall 70mm thick panel offers insulation up to 0.28W/m2K - equivalent to a cavity filled solid wall. www.structura-uk.com/kalwall
Morley Launches Smart Solution For Home Automation Integration Integral blinds manufacturer Morley Glass & Glazing has developed SmartMotion, a unique interface that helps installers quickly and easily incorporate its motorised integral blinds into home automation systems. Ian Short, managing director of Morley Glass & Glazing said: “The global home automation market was valued at $4.41 billion in 2014 and is set to grow by 26.3% by 2020. Home automation systems integrate various domestic applications such as lighting, heating, safety and security, energy management, entertainment systems – and motorised integral blinds - and are growing in popularity in the UK, as the concept of “smart” homes takes off. “An increasing number of our customers are being asked to incorporate our motorised Uni-blinds® integral blinds into electric-powered home automation systems – and in the past it has been a daunting and a complex task that could cause damage to the wiring of the blinds or the home automation system. “This inspired us to commission the development of a unique interface called the SmartMotion which makes the process so simple it’s child’s play. In one easy step the operation of the blinds is smoothly integrated into the whole home automation system so that they can be controlled at the touch of a button, even when you’re not at home.” The SmartMotion is exclusive to Morley Glass & Glazing and is compatible with the MB System of Uni-Blinds®, which operate using an electric brushless motor. Effective Control For Heating Systems The selection of programmers and timers available today are many and varied and range from the simple to the far more complex. ESi is typical in that it offers a range of programmers from a simple 1 Channel version to a 3 channel Multi-Purpose Programmer which enables the installer to comply with Part L of the Building Regulations by providing separate timed heating control for living and sleeping zones in a home, whilst also providing timed control of hot water. However, the ESi range all offers 24 hour 5/2 day and 7 day programming options for each channel. And these programmers also feature a “Landlord” option to encourage social housing tenants to allow access for annual maintenance, often a real challenge for social landlords. ESi provides a range of programmable room thermostats – both hard wired and wireless models. A seven-day timer makes it possible to set a different heating pattern for each day while 5/2 programming offers different options for weekdays and weekends. www.esicontriols.co.uk

Mr Slim R32 Models Bring Advanced Benefits At The Same Price Mitsubishi Electric has launched a new range of air conditioning units utilising the new refrigerant R32 which will be available at the same price as the equivalent R410A units. The R32 Mr Slim Power Inverter split type models are the second product range in the company’s UK line-up to utilise R32 refrigerant – which has a low global warming potential (GWP). “We have kept the price exactly the same as our current R410A Mr Slim Power Inverter line up as we see this eliminating a big hurdle in the adoption of this new refrigerant, which is an important change to help combat global warming,” explains Carl Dickinson on behalf of the company. “Anyone planning on using, designing or installing air conditioning in the coming years will now need to take into account the GWP of the system to meet the requirements of the F-Gas Regulations,” adds Dickinson. In March 2014, the European Parliament passed the 2014 EU F-Gas Regulation legislation with the key objective of reducing F-Gas emissions by 79% between 2015 and 2030. The overall intention is to cut the availability of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) with a high GWP. The F-Gas Regulations will have a major impact on the air conditioning sector and any option for the next generation of refrigerant gas must be able to meet the demands of this stringent legislation in reducing the environmental impact of HFCs. R32 has a GWP of 675 compared to R410A refrigerant which has a GWP of 2,088 and Dickinson sees this as an important reason why the market is expected to move quickly to the new refrigerant. www.timeforr32.co.uk/pr4

SuperQuilt Multi-Layer Foil Earns Agrement Approval The effectiveness of SuperQuilt, part of the YBS range, as a single layer insulation solution for use beneath pitched roof rafters, in either new-build or refurbishment situations has been underlined by the award of a coveted BBA Certificate. Agrement Certificate 17/5388 explains in detail how the already widely specified, multi-layer foil insulation can be used to retain energy within attic or habitable loft spaces: cutting fuel bills, improving comfort levels for building occupants and adding value. Importantly it can be employed to address detail areas such as the cheeks of dormers, dwarf walls, bonnet hips and other features. The Certification comes after prolonged evaluation by the British Board of Agrement and covers such considerations as related Building Regulation matters. design criteria, ventilation and installation guidance, as well as regular review by the highly respect authority. Crucially, the Agrement Certificate confirms that under normal conditions the durability of the SuperQuilt will be equivalent to that of the roof it is installed within and will contribute to controlling condensation in the roof space, while offering very good thermal performance. The emissivity of 0.03 for the outer foil is complemented by a declared core thermal resistance of 1.35 m2KW. The Certificate further states that the BBA believes SuperQuilt can satisfy the requirements of not only the Building Regulations 2010 (England and Wales), but also the Building Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2012, The Building (Scotland) Regulations 2004: making it “fit for purpose” nationwide. www.ybsinsulation.com

Tapworks Launches Easyfit All-In-One High Flow Kit The new Tapworks EasyFit all-in-one kit has been launched in the UK offering a clip on integrated bypass and push fit hoses to the already simple to install Tapworks water softener range that has been improving owners quality of life for many years. This new kit is unique and available only to Tapworks installers and their customers and highlights again why Tapworks water softeners are the number one choice for installers in the UK. It’s good news for homeowners living in the 60% of the UK that has hard water problems. The new bypass connector fits straight on to copper pipe and fits all ¾” valves on the Ultra 9 Easyflow, AD11 Easyflow and Infinity Easyflow softeners in the range – ideal for any home and able to fit in many standard kitchen cupboards. For larger homes with 28mm plumbing, the Tapworks NSC4OUD1 offers a solution where this high flow softener is normally sited in a utility or boiler room. Its 1” valve and high capacity means it can handle the most demanding homes. Tapworks Pascal Plouvier says this latest development is key to building on the already impressive reputation that Tapworks has for manufacturing the most reliable softeners on the market: “We have been able to offer the most successful range of conveniently sized water softeners for many years with a softener in the range for every home and every family size. We introduced the high flow valve which is ideal for vented and unvented systems. The Tapworks range is a genuine ‘fit and forget’ range that’s easy to install and comes with sector leading warranties backed by our own high quality team of engineers.
They are available from all good plumbers’ merchants.” Water softener owners have warmed to the Tapworks Genius Chip© technology installed on all its softeners, that saves them time and money and recognise the benefits of the automated proportional recharge that only happens when its required – saving water and salt. Anyone who lives in a hard water area knows they do. The evidence is abundantly clear on a daily basis in the home, from the issues with washing, bathing, cleaning and fighting limescale build up in kettles, washing machines, dishwashers and in heating systems. People who have invested in a water softener will virtually never live in a house without one again – the benefits are that powerful. “And installers who have become linked to the Tapworks brand are our best allies,” continues Pascal Plouvier. “We have built up our Team Tapworks installer network as the awareness of the benefits of working with Tapworks and developing this additional income stream has grown - alongside their existing heating or bathroom installation business. With installers getting a free AD 11 Easyflow for every ten registered installations, there are clear tangible benefits to membership alongside the advice and other offers available to installers. Some installers reckon they convert as many as one in two quotes where they tack the cost of a water softener on to a quote for a heating system or new bathroom, to keep the customer’s new investment working as efficiently and cost effectively as possible.” To find out more about the new EasyFit all-in-one installation kit and the range of Tapworks water softeners, along with the benefits of membership of Team Tapworks, go to www.tapworks.co.uk or call Tapworks on 01494 480 621.

Increased Demand For Renewable Building Product Demand for Plaswood is on the increase as specifiers, architects, landscape designers, construction companies and many more realise the benefits of the sustainable, eco-friendly substitute for non-renewable materials such as wood, concrete and steel. Plaswood is strong, durable, waterproof, maintenance free, versatile and 100% recyclable - it sounds almost too good to be true. Made in the UK from 100% recycled plastic, the product supports the circular economy and is not a wood composite like many other plastic wood products on the market. Plaswood’s roots date back to the 1980’s. Today it is manufactured by RPC bpi recycled products, Europe’s largest recycler of waste plastic, at its dedicated factory in Dumfries, Scotland. The company boasts an annual recycling capacity in excess of 100,000 tonnes of waste, mainly from the agricultural sector’s waste farm bale plastic. Today Plaswood is a leading brand producing Plaswood lumber, construction materials and street furniture - providing structural and practical solutions and products for wetlands, waterways, parks, gardens, towns, city centres, leisure centres, schools and playgrounds. In fact, anywhere where environments are exposed to water and/or the elements. Although robust, Plaswood is flexible in the sense it can be formed into virtually any shape and is versatile as it can be used alongside steel and concrete too. Its strength comes from its construction from technically superior waste agricultural plastics. The high-performance product is non-absorbing and weatherproof, which makes it more sustainable and cost-effective than traditional building materials. Its eco-friendly credentials are enhanced as it doesn’t require painting or preservation once fitted, and after usage it can be fully recycled for further environmental consideration. Plaswood is truly a closed loop product for the 21st century. www.plaswoodgroup.com
LED Floodlights Built For The British Weather… Our temperate maritime climate may be, relatively speaking mild, but it’s also quite wet – hence our lush green countryside. With much of our weather arriving from the Atlantic as well, it all adds up to a recipe for corrosion. Rusty fittings, casings, screws and brackets on outdoor lights are an all too familiar sight. Until now you could only choose to put up with it – not ideal – or make regular replacements - not exactly a modern, sustainable approach. Now, with Timeguard’s new Coastal range you can fit kit that will look good for longer. Rust is avoided because all the parts which have to be made of metal have been replaced with high-grade stainless steel, from
20
the brackets to the screws and even pcb components. 10W, 20W and 30W floodlights with integral PIR detectors are available, all with slave terminals to connect external loads. There’s also a new parallel switching facility, so you can connect up to four floodlights in parallel such that any detector will switch them all on. Another great new feature is the curved Timeguard panning bracket. No longer do you have to align floodlights flat to the wall, this clever curved bracket enables you to pan as well as tilt. www.timeguard.com

New Schueco Jansen Renovation Window Has Additional Features New from leading steel specialist, Schueco Jansen, is Janisol Arte 2.0, a refined version of the original Janisol Arte renovation window that now comes with an enhanced specification and improved performance characteristics. As elegantly ‘retro’ in appearance as its predecessor, Janisol Arte 2.0 offers a new and enlarged range of profiles with sight-lines from 25 mm, including a new profile shape with an integrated weatherstrip groove which offers a push-in rebate gasket to simplify and speed-up fabrication times. There are also more glazing bead shapes – right-angled, bevelled, scotia and flat – making it even easier to find an exact match for steel windows that are being replaced. Importantly, the range of projects for which the window is suitable has expanded because it is now possible to add laserwelded profiles to standard Arte profiles to increase mullion spans for larger areas of fenestration. The new Janisol Arte 2.0 window is available in all the conventional opening types commonly encountered in both pre- and post-war industrial buildings, but maximum vent weights have increased to 150 kg as a result of the adoption of new 3D adjustable stainless steel hinges. Another benefit is that simpler fabrication techniques reduce manufacturing time by up to 85%, meaning that six and a half Janisol Arte 2.0 vents can be produced in the time it took to make a single vent in the old system. Special new foam profiles located between the glass and the frame mean that insulation has been significantly enhanced and following the introduction of insert profiles – which also speed up fabrication – drainage has been made even more reliable. www.schueco.co.uk
Wrightstyle Advanced Systems Complete Prestigious Hong Kong Development Wrightstyle, one of Europe’s leading suppliers of advanced glazing systems, has supplied to a prestigious residential tower block in Hong Kong. The company supplied its SR60 curtain walling system which was constructed into a three-sided glass corridor for the building’s clubhouse rooftop areas. The Skypark development, completed in the last few weeks, is situated in the city’s Mongkok district, one of the most densely-populated areas in Hong Kong. Wrightstyle’s systems form part of the building’s 28th floor clubhouse, called The Aurora, which features social spaces, a gym, bar and swimming pool and, on the floor above, a lawned garden. The clubhouse is completely walled in glass, providing uninterrupted views over the rooftops of Kowloon. Wrightstyle has international accreditations in Europe, the USA and in the Asia-Pacific region – and has undergone stringent fire testing for, for example, the Architectural Services Department (ASD) of the Hong Kong government. In addition, Wrightstyle provided curtain walling for Hong Kong’s Langham Place development, which comprises a 53-storey office tower, a 5-star hotel with 665 bedrooms and rooftop swimming pool as well as a 600,000 sq ft shopping mall with 300 shops. The company’s systems at Langham Place were installed across seven floors, to protect walkways between the main building and the shopping area, an important escape route in the event of fire. For the Skypark project, all mullions and transoms were designed, fabricated and finished at Wrightstyle’s facilities in Wiltshire, with final assembly undertaken by the company’s trained local teams in Hong Kong. The systems were also checked, tested and approved for wind and water by city technicians, and to ensure compliance with all local statutory requirements and architect's designs. www.wrightstyle.co.uk

Uncompromising Fire Safety With Whitesales nSHEVs Whilst today’s Building Regulations, British Standards and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 are totally well-intentioned and comprehensive in their reach, there is, unfortunately, still potential for misunderstanding and confusion. With the current heightened awareness of fire safety, the importance of seeking expert guidance from a longestablished nSHEV system manufacturer like Whitesales is, therefore, critical to ensure the system delivers on its core purpose should the building ever suffer a fire incident. The Whitesales range encompasses rooflights, smoke vents, access hatches, flat roof edge trims and accessories. The eight key nSHEV solutions it provides all exceed the minimum safety standards, being CE marked, fully certified to BS EN12101-2 and able to assist with compliance with Building Regulations Approved Document B and Approved Document L. These high-quality, UK-manufactured products are backed by a team which has the dedication, expertise and resources to support specifiers at every stage.
nSHEVs – natural smoke and heat ventilation systems – have long been acknowledged as a highly effective way to protect building occupiers from the effects of smoke in the event of a fire, but the latest solutions by UKmanufacturer Whitesales provide architects with the potential to combine their core safety purpose with a range of additional benefits.
Jon Fleet, Smoke & Access Solutions Director at Whitesales, says: “Smoke inhalation is the biggest cause of deaths in building fires, which is why a nSHEV system meeting or exceeding the BS EN12101-2 standard must be incorporated into applicable buildings. It must be specified correctly though, with the right solution to suit the application, and this is why we are equipped to provide help with the initial survey and assistance at the quoting stage, with technical advice backed by CAD and BIM support.
The company, which has over 25 years’ experience in the manufacture and distribution of speciality flat roofing products, provides nSHEV solutions for commercial, industrial and residential applications in an extensive range of sizes and styles. This ensures the nSHEV options available do not constrain broader building design ambitions, such as aesthetics, roof design and energy consumption.
“Our ability to install the more complex units is something our customers find extremely useful too, but it is our wide range of stock sizes available for next day delivery, easy to understand literature, an online portal that gives convenience and clarity when choosing the right SHEV system.
One approach that building designers are increasingly utilising is to use glass in smoke vents to deliver a higher thermal and acoustic performance whilst including the benefit of natural daylight. This takes advantage of the fact that rooflights can be up to three times more effective at letting light into a building than conventional windows. SHEVs are also being incorporated into comfort ventilation (day-to-day ventilation) systems which means they are becoming integral to the delivery of healthy, energy efficient buildings to achieve high user and owner satisfaction ratings.
“It’s a range that is constantly evolving in line with the continuous review of regulations and legislation. The recently updated BS 9991 will affect BS 9999, and this in turn will be incorporated into the soon to be updated Approved Document B. Our technical team is tracking this closely so our solutions will stay ahead of the curve, with fire safety compliance assured to specifiers.” Find out more at www.whitesales.co.uk.

FIRE DOORS – GETTING THE BASICS RIGHT www.crittall-fendor.co.uk
Q – If I want a 30 minute integrity only fire screen how would I specify this? A – You can either describe it is 30/0 fire resistance (30 minutes integrity (first figure) and 0 minutes insulation (second figure)) or E30. The same formats can be used for 60 minutes integrity only or 90 minutes etc. Q – If I wanted a 60 minutes fire screen or door with integrity and insulation, how would I specify this? A – Either 60/60 (60 minutes integrity and 60 minutes insulation) or EI60. 120/120 or EI120 would signify a 120 minute integrity and insulated requirement. Q – What if I need only reduced insulation (radiant heat) that is less that 30 minutes i.e. 90/15 (90 minutes integrity and 15 minutes insulation) or EW90? A – This is possible as some glazing is available to cover this. Q – Which is the highest performing framing material to use? A – Although frames can be made of aluminium and timber etc, steel is the highest performing due to its stability under high temperatures, but also its ability to clamp the glazing in place. Q – Can fire glazing be used externally? A – Yes, it can be used within double glazed units.
Jason Davidson, Technical Sales Director of Crittall Fendor, reviews fire door performance and specification criteria Q - What is fire integrity when related to a door? A – It is the ability for the door, screen etc to stop the actual physical elements of a fire getting from one compartment to another (one side of the closed door to the other side). Q – What is integrity and insulation? A – Where as an integrity only stops the physical fire passing through the door or screen etc, it doesn’t stop radiant heat passing. The non fire side of an integrity only fire door and surroundings gets extremely hot and in itself can cause serious issues. However, adding an insulation element to the requirements stops the radiant heat passing through (for a given length of time), which allows people to escape passed it. Q – Where would an integrity and insulated door or screen be used? A – Where it is protecting an escape route out of a building i.e. protecting an escape stair area. Obviously if there is a fire behind the door or screen and people need to escape passed it, the insulation value stops the radiant heat burning people as they escape passed it.
Q - Can fire glass be used in a silicone butt jointed situation? A – Yes, the fire glazing technology has moved on rapidly and silicone butt jointed screens are widely used. Q – Are there doors available to match the silicone butt jointed systems available? A – Yes, these are becoming more and more popular and provide a stunning finish. Q – Is the integrity and insulated fire glass thicker than integrity only glass? A – Yes, whereas most integrity only glass in monolithic so can be relatively thin, integrity and insulated glass is laminated with intumescent interlayer’s which makes it thicker. The higher the insulation value, the thicker the glass needs to be. Q – What are intumescent seals? A – Intumescent is a substance/material that swells and expands with subjected to heat. Intumescent materials are used within seals on fire doors etc so that in a fire the intumescent gets hot, swells up and fills any gaps that appear, which in turn stops fire and smoke spread. Q – Can any ironmongery by used on fire doors? A – No. It is very important that ironmongery is seriously considered when using fire doors. Ironmongery used must have been physically tested or have been successfully assessed to be suitable for doors. It is important that the door shuts properly and securely, so that fire cannot spread through gaps. With some types of doors, latches are needed (in some Author: Jason Davidson, Technical Sales Director, Crittall Fendor
Q - What are the timescales used when measuring fire performance? A – Generally the performance is measured in 30 minute segments i.e. 30, 60, 90, 120 minutes.
cases double latched), rebated double doors need to use selectors to ensure they close in the correct sequence. Always take advice from the door manufacturer and ensure that they have fire test evidence.

ARE ALL SAFES THE SAME? www.securikey.co.uk
Jeremy Cassady, Managing Director at Securikey, discusses some of the distinguishing features of a safe that will provide you with enhanced security. Buying a safe can be an especially daunting purchase for not just a first time buyer, but a seasoned buyer as well, especially one who has high security requirements to keep in mind. Depending on your requirements, budget and space availability, a number of factors need to be kept in mind when making this very important purchase. Buying the incorrect safe can negatively impact you in the short run by resulting in loss of valuable items and irreplaceable documents such insurance papers, official paperwork and sensitive memos and, in the long run, leave you with a product that does not cater to your needs. To help you, we have compiled a clear and concise list of important features to look for in a safe depending on your requirements. Fire proof security - Though all safes provide a degree of security, not all safes guarantee users protection against elements like fire which can destroy items inside. That is why it is important to source a safe which offers at least a basic level of security against the threat of fire. Most renowned brands will ensure that they either offer heavy duty models able to withstand temperatures of up to 950°C for an hour, which meet European legislation standards and are clearly labelled to show proof that they have been independently tested and certified to meet the stringent
sound fixing as walls are often only studded constructions and using the maximum amount of support is preferred. Being the master of your own lock - One of the most important aspects to keep in mind is the locking system of a safe. All safes are fitted with a key-lock as standard, a mechanical combination or a more advanced digital locking system. The electronic digital lock works by allowing users to select a unique code to lock and unlock their safes. This offers users extra security against unauthorised users, but can sometimes pose a hurdle for the users themselves. A common problem faced by many users is misplacing or forgetting their unique pin number; this can be overridden with a predetermined master code. As an industry standard, most companies have a series of set master codes that are used to override locks. For security enhancement purposes end users can change these codes, but are often unaware of it. Hence, there clearly is a potential to risk the security of these safes, should those unchanged standard set codes get into the wrong hands. To combat this problem, Securikey has introduced a new system with our Mini Vault Gen. 5 range. Each lock comes with a unique code held by the company (this is different from the code the users sets themselves to access their safe). If a user forgets or misplaces their pin number, they can call Securikey and after passing a series of security questions, will receive that a unique code, only applicable to their safe, which will override the safe’s digital lock. Having a unique code to override digital locks for every safe will eradicate the problem faced with standard codes, and make access to a safe as secure as possible. Knowing that you have this option available will allow you to make a more informed decision. Better certified than sorry - Though all safes are fitted with some kind of a lock on them, it is important to note that not all those locks are up to the job. By ensuring that a safe has a lock which has EN 1300 Certification and the safe has an AIS Approval, you can be assured it is of a good quality. As a further measure of the quality of a safe, look for those that are accredited under the Secured by Design scheme. An additional seal of approval from Secured by Design means that a safe has been tested to security standards in response to trends in crime. Another important consideration is to look at the testing a safe goes through. To assure users of their credibility some manufacturers choose to take part in random annual testing of their safes instead of only planned for testing. This ensures that the quality of every safe that they produce meets rigorous quality standards, and this is highlighted by products bearing all correct testing and warranty badges. Walls of steel - One of the most basic yet fundamental features of a safe is the walls. The material that a safe has been constructed with greatly changes the level of security that it is going to provide for a user. To cut costs so that a safe can be offered for a lower price in the market, some

criteria stated, or safes which benefit from a doubled wall construction with a fire resistant barrier material to DIN 4102 to offer users fire protection. Anchoring the safe - Some safes only provide two basic fixings to anchor a safe to a wall or floor, but safes with four fixings ensure greater security by providing a tight grip against a wide variety of materials that the safe’s surroundings may consist of. Good quality safes should also provide commonly used complementary anchor fixings that are perfectly tailored to their safes. With today’s building types it is vital to get a
manufacturers offer safes constructed with thin, subpar materials which are folded to look thicker. These materials may look strong, but provide unauthorised users with an easy way into safes. You need to check that any safe that you buy has an 8mm steel door at the very least and at the bare minimum either a 4mm or a 6mm double-sided steel body to ensure that it will be able to provide a superior level of security when installed. If you have any questions regarding which safe fulfils your requirements, we’re always happy to provide you with expert guidance. Pendock Pipe Boxing Solutions Give Rudyard Kipling School That ‘Just So’ Look The encasement solutions produced by Pendock are widely used across the commercial and public sectors – including within schools and education establishments – with the manufacturer’s off-the-shelf and bespoke pipe boxing having been recently employed during a large scale refurbishment contract at a South Coast school. The Rudyard Kipling School, located in Brighton, has been the subject of a year-long contract for locally based SMS Southern Ltd., with Pendock having supplied pipe boxing specified by Brighton and Hove Council. The scope of the scheme was to disguise visually intrusive and potentially hazardous pipework in the school and its washroom spaces, which will also ensure that cleaning is made easier with no place for germs to linger.
Equally importantly, the boxing will protect the buildings’ occupants against injury from the hot pipes behind them & also ensure the pipework cannot be tampered with. Pendock, a UK based specialist manufacturer of encasements, including column surrounds, also provided a full site survey and design service for the project, together with installation schedule and drawings. Most fabrications were finished in Pendock’s standard Melamine material, but the manufacturer also provided a more durable laminated finish for the boxing used in the bathroom areas. In total 300 linear metres of boxing was supplied for the contract. www.pendock.co.uk
Impressive Manchester Residential Development Chooses SE Controls One of Manchester’s latest high rise residential developments, Cambridge Street, is using smoke control systems from SE Controls to provide a safe environment for residents, by ensuring escape routes are kept clear of smoke in the event of a fire. The new building provides 282 private rental apartments within two towers, which stand 19 and 28 storeys above ground level. With such a large number of apartments at Cambridge Street, fire safety is an essential consideration of the building’s design with the smoke control system being an integral part of the solution. Each tower has its own escape staircase at the centre of the structure, which is protected by SE Controls smoke ventilation and control systems. These systems are code compliant to Building Regulations Approved Document B, as the travel distance from each apartment is less than 7.5 metres. Every floor of each tower is fitted with an automatically opening smoke vent door, leading to a dedicated smoke shaft, which includes a SHEVTEC automatically opening louvre at roof level. This allows smoke and hot air to be vented and ensures corridors and escape routes are kept clear. On the top floor of each block, an additional corridor roof vent is also incorporated as part of the design, which is controlled by a dedicated SHEVTEC control panel. The smoke vent doors use SE Controls actuators, which are compliant with BS EN 12101, and these are controlled by a series of OSLoop controllers that provide instant response in the event of a fire to ensure the appropriate doors are opened, allowing smoke to escape. Cambridge Street is also installed with SECloudlinkTM, a remote services solution from SE Controls that uses 4G communications technology to constantly provide system status information, allowing data to be displayed remotely to enable facilities and building managers to monitor the building’s smoke control system. www.secontrols.com

Biggest Balustrade Order Yet For ÂŁ35m Mander Centre Development With their biggest balustrade order ever, Laidlaw Balustrades have completed the fourth and final phase of the Mander Centre redevelopment with their laminated structural glass balustrade. The ÂŁ35 million redevelopment of the Wolverhampton shopping centre reaches its end with the completion of the 93,000 sq feet Debenhams store that is set to open in the Autumn of this year. Specified by Bowmer & Kirkland, the requirement is for a glass balustrade across the bridge and main entrance of the long awaited Debenhams store. The balustrade is constructed of 24.89mm laminated structural glass and finished with a custom sized sycamore top rail. With a continuous track fixing being set below the floor, keeping it completely hidden, the laminated structural glass system provides an elegant and sleek look to the Centre. But it is not just about aesthetics, the glass with its 3 kilonewtons loading, provides the ultimate level of safety in high traffic areas. As with all of their projects, Laidlaw provided an initial consultation to ensure the exact specification was met. Set to open in October, it was important that Laidlaw kept to the time frame they were given. With the final phase complete, Debenhams can now begin stocking the store, ready for the grand opening. UV Lining First For Smart Motorway Highway Drainage Lanes Group plc is implementing the first project to extensively line highway drainage pipes as part of a Smart Motorway initiative. The drainage specialist has been commissioned by the Carillion Kier Joint Venture, working for Highways England, to install ultra-violet (UV) liners during the M6 Junction 16-19 Smart Motorway scheme between Crewe and Knutsford, in Cheshire. It is the first time that roadside drainage pipes will have been extensively lined, instead of being replaced, during a motorway upgrade project in the UK. The liners give the pipes the additional structural strength needed to meet the 50year asset life span specified by Highways England. The Smart Motorway upgrade will tackle congestion and improve journey times by converting the hard shoulder to a permanent extra lane, and introducing variable speed limits to keep traffic moving at a steady speed, preventing tailbacks caused by sudden braking. In the first phase of the programme, Lanes is lining pipes with diameters of up to 600mm along the northbound carriageway of the M6 between Junction 18 and 19, a distance of 13 km. Simon Bull, Manager of Lanes Group's Lining Division, said: "We're pleased that we're demonstrated UV lining of long sections of highway drainage is both achievable and delivers excellent results. Implementing a lining programme of this magnitude, and with these productivity targets, would be demanding in any environment. To do it while working in a 3.5-metre-wide space with 135,000 vehicles passing each day just inches away, while working around the needs of other construction colleagues, has been a very interesting challenge indeed." www.lanesfordrains.co.uk
Investment In New Wards At County Hospital Stafford Protected By Yeoman Shield
Hanover Building Unveiled By Remmers The Grade II Listed building located in Manchester City Centre is being refurbished by Quadriga Contracts Ltd as part of the NOMA regeneration scheme to provide Grade A office space, retail and leisure facilities. Constructed in 1905; the interior walls have accumulated a thick build-up of dust, dirt, polish and even nicotine residue, all of which needed to be removed. Following trials of various products, Remmers Arte Mundit Eco was selected as it is a self-vulcanising cleaning paste designed for thorough, water-free removal of residues and soiling on a wide range of substrates. The Arte Mundit Eco was applied using a 4” brush and left to ‘set’ overnight. The set rubber-like material was then removed by hand the following day revealing the original white marble finish. The Client is delighted with the results that the product has achieved. www.remmers.co.uk
County Hospital, Stafford, has invested in 4 new wards which are to be opened throughout the year. The first of such wards to be opened is Elderly Care, Ward 15. The ward refurbishment work included wall & door protection products from Yeoman Shield. Yeoman Shield Guardian Twin Handrail was fitted to the walls along the bed bay corridor. This dual purpose product not only acts as a handrail support for those requiring it but the integrated lower protection rail provides protection against wear and tear to the walls and the upper handrail also. The nurses’ station area and connecting corridor walls are now thoroughly protected with Yeoman Shield 125mm protection rail on a solid timber core. Corner protection angles and protection strip were also added to ensure a comprehensive protection system was in place. All were supplied in complementing shades of Grey, dovetailing into the décor scheme, contributing to a clean and attractive appearance throughout the unit. The 12, bright and airy, en-suite rooms, colourfully painted, have Yeoman Shield bed head protectors installed on the walls at the head end of the patients bed. Yeoman Shield’s stylish Guardian Bedhead protectors at 900mm long in Cream or Grey, were fitted on spacer brackets, standing slightly away from the wall to ensure full protection was given to the plaster painted wall behind. www.yeomanshield.com

Kemper System Protects Welsh National Heritage Stuart Hicks from liquid waterproofing specialist, Kemper System, discusses the roofing project at the ‘Gweithdy’, the latest addition to St Fagans National History Museum, Wales’s most popular heritage attraction.
“Our advice was to opt for a seamless membrane that adheres directly to the substrate to form a flexible monolithic membrane and our experience of Kemper System’s membranes led us to suggest Kemperol V210.”
Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales, is made up of seven museums across the country, and St Fagans National History Museum is one of these sites. The museum was established in 1948 to chronicle Welsh lifestyle, culture and architecture, and now attracts almost 600,000 visitors each year to its picturesque 100-acre site.
Warm Roof Build Up Prior to installation, Kemper System provided application training at the company’s purpose-specified training facility in Warrington. Technical representatives from Kemper System also visited the site during the programme to advise and support the installation team.
Thanks to the largest ever grant awarded in Wales by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) of £11.5 million, and funding from the Welsh Government, they received a £25 million makeover. The scheme comprised of a complete refurbishment of the site’s main building with new galleries, learning spaces and visitor facilities, reconstructing two significant, lost buildings from archaeological evidence, the ‘Gweithdy’ (Welsh for workshop), a gallery and activity space.
M.H. Massey laid the steel decks to form the roof before beginning installation of the Stratex Warm Roof System comprising of Kempertec Type 1 primer, Kempershield vapour control layer (VCL), 150mm Kempertherm FR hard top insulation, and Kemperol V210 liquid waterproofing system.
Designed by FCB studios and constructed by principal contractor, Kier, the ‘Gweithdy’ is a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ building located in a woodland setting within the museum’s existing grounds. The building envelope for the steel framed structure combines curtain walling and stainless-steel cladding to act as a mirror that reflects the landscape onto the façade. Meanwhile, grey panels and wooden slats installed as vertical features to echo the tree trunks all around the building complement nature’s palette.
Kempertherm FR insulation board has a 3mm reinforced facing that can be used on areas subject to greater point loading or more frequent traffic. This offers a cost-effective solution for more frequently trafficked areas and avoids the labour and material costs of a traditionally used plywood strengthening layer. Working in sections, the insulation was laid directly onto the vapour barrier, with the joints between sections sealed using Kempertherm joint fleece, before application of a primer and then the reinforced Kemperol V210 resin to complete the 900m2 2-part roof one area at a time.
Changing Specification The roof of ‘Gweithdy’ has been designed with a slight pitch to aid drainage and features a number of upstands, outlets and gutter flows.
On completion of the roof areas a man safe system was installed and the fixing points subsequently waterproofed using Kemperol V210 to maintain the seamless membrane.
The architect’s original specification for the roof called for a single ply membrane but the roofing and cladding contractor appointed to the scheme, M.H. Massey, proposed that this should be changed to Kemper System’s Kemperol V210 wet-on-wet liquid membrane.
Sustainability Secured Kemperol V210’s BBA-accredited service life of 25 years means that the museum’s estates team can be confident of a low maintenance roof installation, while the warm roof build-up will aid thermal performance in line with building regulations, the new facility’s BREEAM rating and Amgueddfa Cymru’s sustainability commitment. www.kempersystem.co.uk
As M.H. Massey’s project manager, Dave Sampson, explained: “A flat roof of this size in a woodland site and a location known for its wet climate is potentially vulnerable to leaks if a seamed system is used because even a 1mm gap in the weld could result in water ingress.

Adaptable Airport Arrivals During an extension to the busy western terminal of Bristol Airport, Style was contracted to deliver flexible space to the baggage reclaim area, allowing maximum efficiency during times of peak demand. Nine-time winner of the FIS Gold Contractors Award, Style combined DORMA Moveo solid and glass panels to create a moveable wall system that allows the space to be extended by either one or two additional rooms. With semi-automatic operation, the sophisticated dividing wall can be swiftly manoeuvred into place as required, helping maintain both security and the free flow of passengers. “Obviously the volume of passengers varies wildly throughout the year,” comments Julian Sargent, Style’s group managing director. “Creating flexible space with a modern moveable wall instantly boosts capacity at busy times, whilst restricting passengers to parts of the airport they need to be in at quieter times, resulting in easier and more effective management of people by airport staff.” The operable wall made use of DORMA Moveo solid panels as well as DORMA Moveo Glass, both with 50dB Rw acoustics and Comfortronic semi-automatic seals. Combining glass and solid panels was important for security reasons, because it provides instant visual access to each divided area. Aesthetically, this configuration allows light to filter through the room and gives a feeling of space even when the area is segregated. As the panels connect into place, the Comfortronic seals are automatically initiated to form a solid wall and excellent sound barrier, delivering the desired privacy between the areas. www.style-partitions.co.uk
London GP Surgery Gets The Pendock Treatment Pendock, the manufacturer of Pipe Boxing, Column Casings, Radiator Guards and specialist Perimeter Casings for heating, has supplied a range of products for work on a doctors’ practice, located in South-east London. When undertaking the refurbishment of the Albion Street Group Practice in Rotherhithe, the contractor, Westwise Service Management Ltd., rapidly identified that there was a potential risk of burn/scald injury to the building’s occupants from the heating system’s exposed pipework and radiators as well as aesthetic issues. This led the Project Manager, Huseyin Asim, to contact Pendock as a trusted past supplier to source a protection solution to the issue, which would also be practical in terms of hygiene and the cleaning regime required by a medical establishment as well as safe, the system also needed to look attractive and be straightforward to install. Being a refurbishment project, Pendock was required to produce bespoke as well as standard radiator enclosures for some of the rooms, which are also not truly square. The specialist contractor decided to purchase 17 standard and bespoke Ultima Plus Radiator Guards for the surgery: these Low Surface Temperature (LST) guards have been designed to provide the ultimate in protection against burns, while the ‘bullnose’ corners afford further safety in situations where patients might fall accidentally or be at risk from self-harm. Ultima and Ultima Plus guards, as with all items in Pendock’s radiator guard range, are finished with an anti-bacterial coating able to combat MRSA, Salmonella, E- coli and C-difficile. In addition a drop-down, lockable panel is fitted to the Plus models to allow for the regular routine cleaning and inspection. www.pendock.co.uk

Altro Solution Brings Life To Design-Led Hull Birth Centre A complete floors and walls solution from Altro has been used to create a relaxing, stylish and home from home environment for mums-to-be in a new birth centre at Hull Women and Children’s Hospital. The new midwife-led Fatima Allam Birth Centre has been designed to meet the needs of women who want a more natural childbirth experience. It comprises three birthing rooms, each individually designed to create a homely and relaxed feel in beautiful surroundings, while also providing a safe, hygienic environment. Andrew Ledger, contracts manager for Apleona, which provides facilities management for the building, oversaw the new construction and was part of the team that devised the overall concept of the birth centre. “We had a very specific idea of what we wanted the centre to look like, and how we wanted it to function,” Andrew says. “As a midwife-led unit, a relaxed and homely atmosphere was essential, however a priority was of course infection control, hygiene, durability and quality. “We specified Altro floors and walls from the start because we are using these products elsewhere in the hospital with a great deal of success. They meet all our clinical hygiene and infection control needs, while also offering a superb range of colours and textures. Professional artist and designer Adele Howitt, from Studio Eleven Gallery & Workshop in Hull, won a commission from the hospital to design the interior concept for the new birth centre. She provided various colour ways, materials, and themes, to inspire the team. The colour palette was agreed and a range of approved products to work with, including Altro floors and walls.
38
“Once we had decided on colours, we worked closely with Altro to look at the specific products that would meet our brief. I wanted each of the birthing rooms in the new centre to have its own individual style, personality, textures and colours, with the feel of a chic boutique hotel. But I chose an overall theme to link them, which was flowers of Egyptian mythology, one for each room — Lotus, Persea and Jasmine. “ “Rather than hanging pictures on the walls, I wanted to create more profound artistic design features in the birth and shower rooms so I used Altro Whiterock Digiclad to create statement walls from floor to ceiling. This is a fantastic product for design-led projects because you can print any image or photograph onto it, and the quality is superb.” Altro Whiterock Digiclad™ is ideal for creating the right impression with a bespoke design on your wall. Altro Whiterock Digiclad is created by reproducing a photographic image or vector art on to Altro Whiterock wall sheet, with consistent, photographic quality. Hard-coat technology provides scratch-resistant properties for added surface protection, making Altro Whiterock Digiclad ideal for areas where durability is important. Adele chose Altro Whiterock Satins™ for the shower rooms. She says “It has some wonderful shades, and the subtle, sheer texture is very stylish. It provides all the impact resistance and hygiene you would expect from Altro Whiterock, with a stain-resistant, wipe-clean surface.” Flooring for the birth centre was key to creating the homely, non-clinical feel. Andrew Ledger and the project team wanted natural, warm, wood-effect flooring and chose Altro Wood™ for the three bedrooms and corridors. Andrew and his team also specified a way-finding system for the new centre to help those with partial sight and dementia. The system comprises a border of Altro WalkwayTM 20 safety flooring in black fitted around the edge of all the floors in the bedrooms and corridors. www.altro.co.uk

Selectaglaze Lives Up To Great Expectations Bentinck Street is situated between Welbeck Street and Manchester Square in Marylebone and was named after the family surname of the Duke of Portland. Charles Dickens once resided on this street with his father for a few years. Number 20, part of the Howard De Walden Estate, has been transformed to a high spec orthopaedic clinic. The original timeworn windows were draughty and allowed high levels of noise ingress, neither of which are a good recipe for patients recovering from treatment. Architects Frank Shaw, generated a design to make the building fit for purpose in its new role, which involved the installation of secondary glazing to the front elevation of the building, to enhance the acoustic performance and thermal retention of the original glazing. The Series 41 side hung casements were selected, due to the units having a flush glass to frame detail which lessens the build-up of dust and dirt. All the casements were glazed with sealed units housing integral blinds to maintain a clean environment and provide patient privacy. Selectaglaze subsequently installed 30 units, some of which were 2200mm (h) x 820mm (w). The installation was a success and the thermal and noise enhancements can already be felt in the rooms. It is hoped patient stays will be quiet, comfortable, private and clean. Selectaglaze has fifty years’ experience working on all styles of buildings from Listed libraries to new build flats. Selectaglaze works closely with clients to guarantee their requirements are met to make buildings warmer, quieter and safer. For more information contact 01442 837271 or visit: www.selectaglaze.co.uk
Studor Solution Waves Goodbye To Ugly Rooftops An architect’s vision for a ‘wave-effect’ building with no roof protrusions, to mirror the sinuous lines of nearby hills, has been achieved thanks to drainage ventilation expert Studor. Italian architects, in conjunction with the multi-discipline company STEAM, designed the c130m Monselice Hospital in Northern East Italy to ensure it not only fulfilled the highest operational requirements, but also had a profile in harmony with the adjacent sloping hillside landscape. To achieve this aesthetic look, the integrity of the rooftops needed to be maintained, and the design did not allow for any roof protrusions to interrupt the flow of the roofline. The project’s MEP contractor, Gemmo SpA, recognising that input from an expert in drainage ventilation was needed, asked Studor (with over 40 years’ experience in the field) to advise on the drainage system
design. “Our solution was to cap as many stacks as possible with the Studor Maxi-Vent Air Admittance Valve (AAV) which fits discretely within the roof space”, commented Studor’s UK Technical Sales Director Daniel Rath. “The Maxi-Vent protects the trap seals within the drainage system by allowing the intake of air so that each soil pipe can maintain the right level of pressure within the system. This is critical, especially in a hospital environment, ensuring there is no cross-contamination from the drainage system into the habitable space.” “Furthermore, the MaxiVents eliminate the need for any roof penetrations, thus reducing the amount of pipework required saving both time and money. So, not only is the integrity of the roof maintained, but heat loss was minimised and time was saved onsite.” www.studor.net

Council Upgrades All Sheltered Housing With Aico Multi Sensor Alarms
Sheffield City Council has completed a programme to upgrade its fire safety throughout its 1,134 sheltered housing properties using Aico’s Multi-Sensor Fire Alarm for an enhanced level of safety; this will enable residents to live safely in their homes for many years to come. An additional 261 properties within three tower blocks will also benefit from this premium fire alarm, following a fire risk assessment and advice from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue. This latest move to a single alarm specification – the advanced Multi-Sensor Fire Alarm – not only provides greater safety but also enables the Council to standardise its fire detection systems across its entire sheltered property portfolio, making it easier to manage and reducing the chance of renewal using the wrong type of detector. Aico’s Multi-Sensor Fire Alarm contains two sensor types, optical and heat, to constantly monitor smoke and heat levels, sending and receiving information via its intelligent detection software. This sensor information alters the alarm’s sensitivity and trigger points, automatically providing the best response to all fire types and reduces potential false alarms. The Multi-Sensors are officially being installed to Category LD2 (medium protection) but with alarms also in the bedrooms; which in most properties actually equates to the higher LD1 category. www.aico.co.uk

Story Homes Chooses Roofshield To Endorse Quality And Excellence Award winning property developer Story Homes has chosen Roofshield, the unique vapour and air permeable pitched roof underlay as a key product in their strategy for continuous improvement in the quality of build. With expansion plans to build 700 houses in Cumbria, South West Scotland, Lancashire and the North of England, all sites from the beginning of 2017 will be constructed using Roofshield from the A. Proctor Group. An important area which Story Homes wanted to improve was the ventilation of their cold roof spaces, particularly given the complexity of the roof designs on their 4/5-bedroom house types. Following initial meetings between the A. Proctor Group’s technical team and the developer’s design team, Roofshield was selected. It’s high performance air permeability means that the roof space has five times more air changes than using traditional eaves/ridge ventilation. Independently certified air and vapour permeable underlays can be used without additional ridge ventilation in cold roofs. The use of Roofshield vapour and air permeable membrane will lead to savings in labour and material costs, and avoid the risk of ventilation being blocked by insulation or household storage. www.proctorgroup.com

Skating In The Quiet Some of the noisiest buildings are sports facilities such as ice rinks, halls and swimming pools where hard surfaces and large spaces exacerbate echoes and chatter. Architects Christensen & Co which designed a new and very inviting ice skating rink in Ørestad, a fast-developing suburb of Copenhagen, used a popular and very effective solution to the problem. To reduce sound reverberation, Troldtekt natural wood wool acoustic panels were installed to provide a calm and uniform surface, together with integrated lighting. The ceilings in the heated part of the ice rink provide a natural surface with a warm glow, contrasting between the cold crystalline rink and the warm club facilities. Designed as a venue for sport and fun, the architects carefully thought out their choice of materials and finishes, such as concrete, wood and glass and acoustic panels. The City of Copenhagen also invested additional funds to ensure the project was eco-friendly both in its construction and daily operation. Specified throughout the UK and Europe, the benefits of 100% Troldtekt natural wood wool panels include high sound absorption, high durability, natural breathability, low cost life cycle performance and sustainability as documented by Cradle to Cradle certification at silver level. Available in various sizes and in three grades from ultrafine to coarse, they can be left untreated or painted in virtually any RAL colour. www.troldtekt.co.uk
Living The High Life Upgrading the manual access system to the iconic Sussex Heights building in the centre of Brighton, TORMAX was contracted to install two sets of automatic sliding glass doors, creating a contemporary entrance befitting this prestigious residential tower. Powered by the incredibly reliable TORMAX iMotion 2202 operator, the doors silently slide open in tandem, allowing residents and their guests smooth access into the lobby, whilst minimising heat loss from the building. Sussex Heights (www.sussexheights.co.uk) is a luxury apartment block designed by Richard Seifert and built in in the late 1960’s. Rising to 102m high, it is the tallest residential building on the south coast and offers outstanding views across the sea, the South Downs and over the city of Brighton. A landmark building, it consists of 115 sound-proofed and spacious flats on 23 floors and a large penthouse taking up the whole of the top floor. In keeping with the upmarket environment of Sussex Heights, the old manual swing doors were replaced with an automatic entrance system more befitting a luxury apartment block. TORMAX recommended their iMotion 2202 operators to power the doors as they are housed in a slim casing, making them particularly unobtrusive and suitable for a sophisticated, minimalist entrance. Vibration absorbent mountings of the guide rails ensures elegantly quiet operation. Understandably security is an important consideration for residents and the new TORMAX automatic doors feature an electro-mechanical locking mechanism to ensure a high level of burglary protection. They are also certified for rescue and escape routes. “Sussex Heights is right in the middle of Brighton and is busy with residents coming and going, enjoying the shopping and entertainment offered by this vibrant seaside town,” says Hattie Kershaw of property management company, Ellmans Henderson Ltd. “The upgraded automatic entrance is smart and welcoming, defining the ambience of the accommodation right from the start.” www.tormax.co.uk

ESG Helps Give Estée Lauder The Beauty Treatment Over the years ESG has used its skill in glass processing to turn the designs of high profile architects and companies into the glass at the heart of many spectacular modern work spaces. One such company was MCM Architecture who won the Best Workspace Interior Award at the World Interiors News Award 2016, for the design of the relocation space of The Estée Lauder Companies UK & Ireland to One Fitzroy. ESG had the pleasure of producing the glass on the dramatic statement staircase, linking the ten floors together. Architectural fabricators Robert Stevens and Sons did an amazing job of installing the staircase and glass, turning MCM’s vision into reality The staircase creates a ‘dedicated entrance to the training suites from the building reception, offering a glamorous welcome to the many visiting Beauty Advisors attending training’, writes worldarchitecturenews.com. MCM wanted to create a head office that ‘works like an office, but does not look, or feel like an office’ and with clever design features and by using glass products we feel that they went above and beyond the brief. The judges said the project had ‘lovely detailing, and generally a very strong design ethos throughout.’ www.esg.glass 44

Levolux Delivers Top Class Solution The award-winning, £42 million Vijay Patel Building at De Montfort University (DMU) in Leicester, combines several structural elements, each distinguished by a contrasting, yet highly effective external solar shading and screening solution, courtesy of Levolux. Levolux has an impressive track record working on projects at the DMU campus. This continues with the delivery of a custom solar shading and screening solution for the Vijay Patel Building. The solution includes a diverse range of products, including curved Aerofoil Fins, faux terracotta Fins, PV integrated Glass Fins and plant screening louvres. These have been applied differently on the building’s three structures. The eleven-storey Arts Tower is the only surviving element from the original Fletcher complex, which was built in the early 1960’s. Following a comprehensive refurbishment, the façade of the tower has been transformed with the addition of laminated Glass Fins, incorporating building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) technology. In total, Levolux provided 156 Glass PV Fins for the Arts Tower, each measuring up to 763mm wide and up to 3.3 metres in length. The Fins have been divided into two sections. 81 Fins have been fixed horizontally in a vertical stack on the tower’s south- facing elevation. The remainder are fixed vertically, secured with angled brackets to the south-west facing elevation.
To complement the external aesthetic of the Design Wing, Levolux applied a faux terracotta finish to the Fins. To enhance the finish, Levolux developed a special extrusion, with rounded edges. Even under close scrutiny, the Fins have a look and feel that could be mistaken as real terracotta. The pitch of the horizontal Fins reduces to just 200mm at high level on each floor, providing solar shading where it is most effective. The openness of the Fins at low level, helps to maximise daylight levels and allows occupants impressive outward views across landscaped gardens to the River Soar in the west. Projecting from the south of the Design Wing is ‘The Pod’, an ultra-modern, five-storey, curved glass structure. It benefits from extruded aluminium Aerofoil Fins, each measuring 300mm wide by 40mm thick. In total, 23 rows of Fins are fixed horizontally, set at a pitch of 565mm. To accommodate the structure’s inclined, curved form, the Fins have been precisely curved and are secured to an aluminium support structure. At roof level, Levolux developed a plant screening solution, utilising its XL Screening Louvres. Three louvred enclosures have been formed, scaling up to 3.6 metres in height, with a combined length of almost 200 metres. With a ‘Z’ shaped profile, the louvres provide effective visual screening, with excellent airflow. To facilitate access for maintenance, Levolux incorporate double louvred doors in each area.
The Glass PV Fins perform several functions. Firstly, they provide a welcome return in the form of renewable energy. Each Fin is capable of generating a maximum of 299 Watts, with a total combined capacity of 46 kW. The Glass PV Fins also provide an effective form of solar shading, as demonstrated on the south west elevation. In addition, the Fins create an attractive façade element, particularly on the south elevation. By harnessing solar power, the University hopes to cut its energy bill by a fifth.
In addition, at roof level on the Pod structure, Levolux’s Contour Louvre system was specified to create a high performance plant screen. The louvred facade extends 3.2 metres in height and almost 12 metres in length. The louvre’s ‘S’ shaped profile, delivers an attractive, yet highly weather-resistant façade. The louvres are backed with bird/insect mesh for increased protection, while double louvred doors were provided to satisfy access requirements.
The Design Wing, which runs from east to west, at the northern edge of the development, is a large, six-storey structure with a modern, glazed façade. Its south- facing elevation is fitted with rectangular-shaped aluminium Fins, each measuring 150mm wide by 50mm thick. In total, 61 rows of Fins extend horizontally, along the length of the building in a vertical stack that extends from first floor up to roof level.
Levolux’s high performance Triniti Bracket was used extensively across the development to integrate the various solar shading elements with the curtain walling. In addition to providing exceptional structural performance, the Triniti bracket is renowned for minimising noise transmission and preventing interstitial condensation, all while maintaining a thermally broken building envelope. www.levolux.com

Recyfix® Monotec Drains Outdoor Surfaces At Ysgol Gynradd Lôn Las School, Swansea The Ysgol Gynradd Lôn Las Primary School, Swansea, has currently 535 pupils from Year 1 to 6 as well as Reception and Nursery Classes. The school site is split into 4 main areas. Having a large gymnasium and a separate school canteen there are plenty of outdoor playing areas including a hard surface yard, an enclosed area for Nursery and expansive areas of grassland. Hauraton Limited introduced the RECYFIX® MONOTEC, surface drainage system in January 2016.The Lôn Las school, joins numerous installations successfully completed in the United Kingdom. The RECYFIX® MONOTEC system was installed to provide surface drainage in the paved entrance/play areas and the car park’s asphalt surface. Having a grating width of 100mm (Channel internal dimension) with an overall height of 280mm and a cross-section of 245.5cm2, the 176 metres of channel supplied provide a total water capacity of just over 4329 litres. The MONOTEC one metre long channel component is of a sturdy monolithic design where the HEELSAFE grating and the tongue and groove linking system are integral to the channel moulding. The whole unit is made of tough, virtually unbreakable polypropylene (PP) formulated to be very resistant to daily temperature fluctuations from frost conditions to strong sunlight, including the Ultra Violet (UV) spectrum. PP is naturally resistant to de-icing salt. Complying with the requirements of EN 1433, the PP is given its UV resistance by adding just sufficient stabiliser so that the structural strength of the material is unaffected and a consistent appearance is maintained.
Cat Jones, Hauraton‘s Project Manager for the South West comments; “The RECYFIX MONOTEC channel HEELSAFE slot grating was originally designed to enhance the flow of water into the channel. The slots are super smooth, elliptical openings with the moulded bars having slightly raised triangular bosses along their outside edges. As well as providing an elegant appearance, the feature ensures surface water is directed into the slots. This configuration also helps eliminate any cross-flow over the grating. The smooth grating and tough nature of the channel, up to load category of Class D400, made the system ideal for the non-trafficked areas such as the entrance area and school play yard as well as staff care parks and access roads. I was particularly please the site contractor Dawnus Construction found these channels easy to handle on site. As each channel component only weighed 8.63kg, this feature eliminated the need for mechanical lifting gear”. Shaun Davies the Site Agent for the Contractor also observed,” I was very impressed with the durability of the MONOTEC channels. Not a single unit was damaged by site traffic or whilst laying the asphalt. Any queries or information required was easily and quickly obtained from Hauraton’s technical support team”. All Hauraton surface water drainage systems’ comply with European Standards (hENs) and carries the CE mark”. For RECYFIX® MONOTEC product specifications go to www.hauraton.co.uk.
