Wicona Roof Glazing Contributes To Stunning Performing Arts Auditorium One of the most impressive performing arts centres to be built at a school in the UK features a bespoke roof glazing solution from Wicona. The Performing Arts Centre at Yarm School in the North East is a major component of the redevelopment of this co-educational private school. The new facilities includes a fully flexible auditorium.

The roof to the auditorium has a combination of square and shaped glass panels constructed using Wicona’s WICTEC 50 aluminium roof glazing system, creating a smooth radius of roof lights. ISG has been awarded a ÂŁ16.5 million contract by Ashfield Land to construct the new Regent Circus retail and leisure destination in Swindon. Built on the site of the former Swindon Technical College, the high profile mixed-use scheme is anchored by a new six-screen Cineworld Cinema and a 50,000 sq. ft. Morrisons supermarket.

Beating strong industry competition to secure this prestigious project, ISG has worked closely with Ashfield Land to carry out an extensive value engineering exercise, collaborating with the delivery team and supply chain to achieve key cost and time savings, significantly refining and enhancing the original specification.

In addition to the new cinema and Morrisons store, Regent Circus will comprise eight restaurant units, with tenants including Prezzo, Nandos and ASK, and a 450 space car park. The multi-storey scheme will regenerate the existing site and improve the street scene with its striking design featuring brick, curtain walling and composite metal cladding. Surrounding public realm space will also be upgraded as part of the development, with a new landscaping scheme and feature exterior lighting.

Part of the London 2012 Olympic Legacy is the development of an award winning revolutionary mobile acoustic performance structure guaranteed to deliver indoor quality acoustics to outdoor venues.

During the lead up to the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, a question was posed by event organisers: “How can we deliver world class indoor quality acoustics from an iconic portable outdoor stage – effectively bringing culture to more places and people”?

The result is a series of new mobile acoustic performance shells called Soundforms.

Iconic Fabric Design: The external skin for the Soundforms mobile acoustic shell is made up of eight inflatable, waterproof, white PVC coated polyester cushions that were designed and manufactured by Architen Landrell, creating one structural unit. The eight inflated sections of the structure are connected and sealed with specialised waterproof, air tight zips (also used in NASA space suits).

Membranes are inflated to variable depths, allowing for the differing tensile loads across the structure. This ensures the skin retains its shallow curved, clam shaped exterior.

The underside of the cushion is blackout PVC coated polyester which assists with the lighting control within the structure by preventing light exiting and entering through the structures surface.

The elegant inside of the shell is manufactured from white joelastic© stretch fabric which is commonly used in theatres for its acoustic properties.

Engineered for the Unexpected: Architen Landrell designed a bespoke, compact air handling-unit which inflates the structure and runs almost silently so that the noise doesn’t interrupt performances. The unit is designed to run constantly keeping the skin taught – engineered for wind, rain, and snow.

Designed to Perform: The proscenium arch of the structure has been designed to project sound beyond the stage platform, reflecting as much sound as possible to the audience. The result is a dramatic portable venue offering musical definition and detail found in concert halls – raising the bar for what the best open-air concert venues can offer.

Easy Up/ Easy Down: The system is designed for rapid erection and dismantling, using minimal manpower and plant in order in order to keep deployment costs to the minimum. The construction methodology is based on systems and techniques that are industry tried and tested, having been developed and refined over the last 35 years by leading staging companies.

Howe Green Celebrates 30 Years In Business As economic pressures continue to take their toll on businesses across every sector, UK manufacturer Howe Green celebrates its 30th year, citing the ability to adapt to change as vital for all companies wanting to survive.

An industry leading manufacturer of access covers for floors, walls and ceilings, Howe Green was founded by Antony Centa and wife Angela in 1983 with their son Peter, the firm’s only employee. The company focused on selling metal fabricated access covers to Terrazzo flooring companies in its formative years. This was a market Antony knew well, having gained valuable industry experience with the St. James Tile Co., a manufacturer and installer of Terrazzo tiles.

The 750 Series access cover was Howe Green’s first product. It was designed and developed specifically to meet the needs of the supermarket sector; a core market for Terazzo flooring. A high quality, medium duty, aluminium access cover, it provided a reliable method of accessing concealed under floor services in highly trafficked areas where a heavier loading was needed. Three decades later, and part of a much bigger product portfolio, the 7500 Series, successor to the original 750 Series product, is still one of Howe Green’s top performers.

Now manufactured in stainless steel as well as in aluminium, it is the ideal access solution for a wide range of applications. These have included terminals for Heathrow’s T5 and London’s first urban cable car, the Cutty Sark and Kings Cross Station, to name just a few.

A specially adapted 7500 Series access cover can also be found above a time capsule buried deep underground at Old Trafford, commemorating 100 years of one of the most famous football stadiums in the world.

Wood Awards 2013 Entries Showcase With the Wood Awards 2013 Call for Entries recently closed with a record number of entries, Building Innovations takes a sneak peak at just a few the innovative projects which entered the competition this year.

Downley House, Hampshire by Birds Portchmouth Russum Architects with Eurban and Techniker - Cross-laminated structural timber frame and glue-laminated beams supplied by Schilliger Holtz from Swiss-grown spruce/fir, European oak and American black walnut Downley House is a truly innovative and extraordinary home where timber is used holistically for structure, external cladding and internal finishing.

At the heart of the home is the foudre-barrel inspired dining hall formed in elliptical glue-laminated ribs which give a unique arching elegance to the space. Shilliger Holtz certified that the timber used for the CLT panels was regrown in 32 minutes.

Cadogan Corner, London by Kyson Design Limited - US Douglas Fir and American white oak The three timber houses represent a contemporary interpretation of the Victorian terrace to which they adjoin.

While the form, scale and articulation of the facade follow the rhythm of the Victorian terraces, the colour, texture and detail define these houses from its archetypal counterpart. A high level of workmanship has been achieved throughout the project. The buildings are predominantly clad in Douglas Fir strips that have been mechanically wire brushed and vacuum stained

black to bespoke specifications achieving a greater depth to the timber’s natural grain and increased longevity. The constraints and site conditions inspired the innovations that define these three unique homes, have defied the preconceptions of the site as a brownfield site.

Future Affordable, Fife by David Blaikie Architects - Local Scottish Sitka spruce, graded C16 Future Affordable is a collaborative project to deliver a sustainable & affordable housing system for the social rented & private market. The e.Core is an offsite manufactured, structural service module formed in nailed, stacked plank timber panels fabricated from 100% Scottish C16 timber for optimal use of its rigidity, acoustic and fire separation performance and low embodied energy qualities.

Scottish Sitka Spruce is normally graded as C16; this corresponds to the lowest grade acceptable of structural applications due to corresponding strength and stiffness properties. However, Edinburgh Napier University’s Centre for Offsite Construction + Innovative Structures (COCIS) used modern material measurement equipment to determine actual timber density and dynamic modulus of elasticity in order to optimise the performance of the end products. The use of modern equipment increased the structural capability of the system due to an inherent understanding of the resource being used. Not Just Another Brick In A Wall!

The Brick Development Association (BDA), one of the construction industries’ most highly respected trade associations, continues to increase the recognition of brick and why it should be the material of choice for all key decision makers in the UK construction industry, with a hard hitting marketing campaign.

Fire Proof, Rot Proof and Future Proof; the message is loud and clear as the campaign focuses on the benefits of brick compared to competing cladding materials.

Sarah Huelin, Marketing and Design Manager for the BDA explains: “Brick is one of the most successful building materials ever devised. It’s been used to shape the built environment since the beginning of civilisation and has proven itself time and time again just take a look at the brickwork at St Pancras Station.

Brick is made locally by the community and for the local area with natural resources, minimising impact on the environment. It can be crushed and recycled on site – and old lime mortar bricks can be cleaned up and used again as bricks. Disused brick quarries are often returned to areas of natural beauty, encouraging wildlife”.

As architects and designers strive to source modern and contemporary materials to enhance their design critique, brick has perhaps been seen as “traditional and uninspiring”, allowing competing cladding materials to emerge into the market place. But the BDA is determined is to set the record straight once and for all.

Brick offers a sense of stability. With changing weather patterns bringing such weather extremes as floods and high temperatures, brick is much more robust than many man-made materials and won’t rot, rust, erode or decay.

Brick walls are impact resistant and create buildings that will be around for generations to come. An inert material, brick is not affected by the ravages of water, wind or fire and with inherent sound insulation properties brick shuts out road noises and the howling of winter storms.

Brick is a solid, permanent and low maintenance material that provides lasting beauty and appreciating value - brick offers true longevity. With many elements of past brick buildings still standing today, brick is one of the only truly tried and tested materials known to man.

Sarah concludes: “Quite simply, we all love brick and it’s a favourite with architects and developers too. After all, there is a great deal of choice with around 1200 brick types produced in the UK alone. On versatility and pure aesthetics, few rivals come even close. Not only are brick buildings warm and secure, they are versatile and can be extended and adapted easily, cost little to maintain and offer long term building performance”. Sika Supports Young Apprentices As Part Of New Build-It Programme Sika Limited has supported a new initiative to help provide apprenticeships for young people in Lambeth. The company has donated 1,500 hi-vis vests to the scheme, as well as provided free of charge materials to help complete the regeneration of Stockwell Community Centre.

Build-it is a multipartner programme led by London Youth, creating a platform for intergenerational skills sharing between young people and older tradespeople, working together to refurbish empty properties in Lambeth to be used for social housing.

The relationship between Sika and Build-it first came about when George Clarke, from Channel 4’s Restoration Man and Build-it Programme Ambassador, tweeted a request for companies to help provide PPE for the 1,500 young people involved in the programme.

Sika came to the rescue with hi-vis vests for the whole team. Cavity Wall Movement Challenges PD 6697 Parapet cavity walls behave differently because both faces are exposed. Such dual exposure dictates the protection against damp penetration takes into consideration more variable elements than are normally encountered. When a traditionally constructed parapet wall becomes saturated with rain and in extremes of heat and cold, expansion of the masonry can prejudice the masonry structural continuity.

As with any wall, expansion provision is necessary in the form of expansion joints. If one looks back at earlier British Standards an inward stepping DPC crossing the cavity was stipulated rather than an outward stepping DPC. Initially parapet walls built to that detail functioned correctly but after a few years cracking along the bedding course provided an entry route for penetrating water to enter. Cavity Trays approach was the opposite. They designed an outward stepping arrangement - the concept subsequently to appear within the revised British Standard. We are all growing older and living longer, a fact confirmed by the Office of National Statistics, the most common age at death in England and Wales in 2010 was 85 for men and 89 for women. Over the last 50 years (19602010) the average life span has increased by around 10 years for a man and 8 years for a woman. So not only do we have an ageing population, but a UK population that is expanding rapidly.

Housing and housing complexes, designed specifically for the needs of todays advancing elderly generation, offers a supportive, community based environment, with the latest technological developments and care close to hand if required.

Currently care homes are nearly full to capacity and, with no alternative choice, single homeowners revert to these homes as seemingly no alternative exists. Many elderly are therefore institutionalised when they could live healthy, independent lives given the correct homes and support. To reduce the dependence on care homes, the UK needs to deliver modern homes for retirement.

New to the UK, following the lead from countries such as USA, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa, are ‘Retirement Villages’. These ‘new’ developments’ are built as new villages, surrounding a core of amenities or ‘village centre’ which includes leisure facilities, such as restaurants, bars, village hall, sports facilities, well-being centres, IT suites, craft rooms, greenhouses, allotments, to name but a few.

Rather than selling up your home and losing your possessions and taking a ‘resident’ status in a care home, people moving into a retirement village often have the option of purchasing their own home or apartment and take with them their own furniture and possessions, most provide at least one car space.

When additional care is required in the future, support is available close by, all of which can be provided in various packages to suit individual needs.

Senior Architectural Systems have been at the forefront of specification in this emerging sector with both aluminium, and timber aluminium composite, window, door and curtain wall systems. Glancy Nicholls Architects specified Senior’s Hybrid curtain wall and window systems on the scheme which perfectly complements the timber structure used extensively on the development.

Oakland Village boasts its own hairdressers, restaurant, bar, bistro, gym, convenience store and a host of communal facilities, including landscaped gardens, allotments, a lounge, IT suite, library and a village hall-style function room.

Retirement villages and care for the elderly is a long-term growth market in the UK, as life expectancies continue to increase. This growth will create further opportunities for businesses that offer specialist care for aged-related illnesses, increase employment opportunities, importantly demand will be lead for high-quality homes and villages.

Sector specialist Key Note have forecast that the long-term care market will grow by 13.2% between 2011 and 2015 to reach ÂŁ16.2bn. The basic idea was compelling from the very outset: the architects schneider + schumacher, who won the international design competition for the project in 2008, decided to go underground to build the extension for Frankfurt’s Städel Museum. Instead of adding another overground wing to the existing ensemble, the architects dug under the garden of the existing building to create a stunning new gallery.

The 3,000 square metre exhibition space, where the museum will be presenting its contemporary art collection, opened at the end of February 2012. The spectacular new building – an underground art gallery in the garden, visible from the outside with its dome-like bulge and 195 circular skylights, has sparked enormous interest since it opened and brought an influx of visitors to the Städel Museum.

The Städel Museum, located in a prominent position on the Museumsufer in Frankfurt, is one of the most important museums in Germany and has made a name for itself in the international art scene with its great art, inspiring exhibitions and big names. In 1815, Johann Friedrich Städel, a banker, spice trader and patron of the arts from Frankfurt, laid the foundations for the museum when he left his extensive art collection and his fortune to the citizens of Frankfurt. The museum has continued this close relationship with patrons to this day. Half of the

total cost of u35 million for the new extension, which has practically unqualified public support, was funded by private benefactors. schumacher + schneider have achieved an astonishing feat. Their architectural work bows down to art and creates a truly unique space for art to shine.

Inside, the all-white gallery rooms are dominated by the elegantly shaped dome which spans the entire exhibition space. The reinforced concrete structure, which is supported by only 12 interior columns and the outside walls, rises to a height of 8.2 metres at the highest point of the dome. The inside is illuminated by round skylights which are evenly spaced across the entire ceiling.

The skylights, which have a diameter of between 1.5 and 2.5 metres, flood the space below with natural light as well as forming a captivating pattern of light in the garden area above at night. Outside, the green, dome-like protrusions – called ”Eyes for Art” by the architects and developed specially for the project, lend the Städel garden a unique look.

The striking bull’s-eye ceiling is a work of art in itself: the architecture serves art and manifests itself as a work of art. The domed green roof also doubles up as a fully accessible garden. The geometry of the 195 round skylights in the

roof is typically difficult to seal, which is why the architects planned to use a liquid waterproofing system from the very start. The product of choice for this project was KEMPEROL® 2K-PUR, an odourless, solvent-free system which causes no odour emissions during application.

PB Flachdachbau, a long-standing, experienced KEMPEROL® partner, was contracted to provide waterproofing and sealing. Work lasted from September 2010 until September 2011. Company owner Jürgen Bartmuß refused to be deterred by set-backs in the overall planning: due to delays, work on sealing the round skylights was not able to start until mid-December 2010 and ran until the beginning of April 2011.

In keeping with the motto of all outdoor fans that there is no bad weather, only unsuitable clothing, Jürgen Bartmuß shrugged off this challenge and had the Städel construction site ”dressed” in waterproofs and heated tents installed.

While the temperatures outside dipped far below zero, even going as far down as –15°C, the team inside worked their way forward gradually despite the adverse weather conditions. In the first step the substrate between the square skylight flanges was either sanded or blasted, depending on its condition. The contractors applied solvent-free KEMPERTEC® EP5 primer over the entire concrete

substrate. This product, which is based on epoxy resin, can be applied in ambient temperatures as low as 5°C. Like with all KEMPERTEC® primers, residual moisture in the concrete substrate must not exceed 5% in the top 2 centimetres. To avoid a film forming on the surface, care must be taken not to go below the dew point.

When the product is applied the surface temperature must be 3K above the dew point.

KEMPEROL® 2K-PUR waterproofing is an odourless, solvent-free liquid applied waterproofing system based on reaction resins which were specially developed for the most demanding waterproofing projects. The product can even be used in sensitive areas that remain open to the public as no ‘chemical odour emissions’ are generated. The waterproofing system is tested according to ETAG 005 and has W3 certification with a service life of 25 years. KEMPEROL® 2K-PUR has long-term resistance to roots in compliance with FLL standards.

While the new extension was being built, comprehensive renovation work was also carried out on the existing buildings. To ensure complete, enduring watertightness all joints and details were also waterproofed with KEMPEROL®.

The much-anticipated regeneration of Reading railway station features 14 Stannah bespoke lifts to ensure the easy movement of people and goods to every platform of this multi-million structure. In summer 2012 a huge new passenger bridge, which was constructed alongside the station, was slid into position across the existing tracks. The new station concourse, which opened at Easter 2013, was cleverly created on this gigantic bridge that provides access to every part of the station.

On entering the station from the north side there are two 20-person (1500kg) passenger/goods lifts providing travel to the elevated bridge area. A third matching lift travelling three stops, with a capacity of 20 persons (1500kg), is for staff use only and is operated by a swipe card system. At bridge level these lifts appear as a triplex, adjacent to the escalators.

The bridge features a series of five central lift shafts running right across the concourse, each plinth housing two lifts; one for passenger use and a second that can be used by staff with goods too. The five 2-stop 16 person (1200kg) 024

passenger lifts travel 12.7 metres to the platforms below. The five 2-stop 20-person (1500kg) staff/goods lifts travel 12.7 metres to and from service areas.

An additional four 4-stop 16-person lift for staff use only sits in the corner of the bridge back of house for office staff. All the lifts are hydraulically driven and all fourteen motor rooms are housed on the entry level of the station on both the north and south sides of the station. Stannah engineers worked round the clock during an intense three-month period when ten lifts were installed simultaneously to meet deadlines for their clients, Principal Contractor Costain/ Hochtief and Network Rail.

All the Stannah lifting equipment at Reading is supplied with guarantees and will be maintained by the Brackley branch of Stannah Lift Services, covering South Midlands and Home Counties as part of the nationwide service and maintenance contract with Network Rail.

GALLERY/PROJECT/CANTIFIX Title: Cantifix ProvidesLight Relief For North London School Location: London Application: Glazing Visit: www.cantifix.co.uk

Cantifix worked alongside Marianne Davys Architects to create this angled glass enclosure at Arnold House School in north London, as part of a roof alteration project. Providing a glazed link between two parts of the building, the enclosure sits above a staircase and acts as a light well – bringing maximum natural light into the floors below.

The enclosure is structurally glazed, with a gentle ridge at the centre of the roof – as well as shaped side panels. All these angles made this a tricky job to fit – but with some careful organisation and teamwork it was installed without a hitch.

The roof of the enclosure is supported by a glass beam, which is nearly 4 metres long. The beam is made up of three layers of toughened safety glass, laminated together – a great way to support a roof without impacting on its transparency.

Cantifix also installed a glass balustrade and a fire-rated window to complete the new stairwell.

A £30 million Science and Technology Centre at Staffordshire University’s Stoke Campus is relying on a combined smoke and natural ventilation solution from SE Controls to create a comfortable and safe environment for staff and students.

Designed by architects Sheppard Robson and built by Miller Construction, the extensive facility is part of a £200 million flagship regeneration scheme, which is transforming education in the region with the development of the ‘Uni-Q’ university quarter.

Working closely with façade and access specialist, Norking Aluminium, SE Controls was responsible for the supply, installation and commissioning of the smoke and natural ventilation solution to ensure the fully automated system met design specifications and legislation for air quality as well as smoke safety in the event of a fire.

SE Controls supplied 240 SCCO and TGCO type chain actuators to the project that which were used in conjunction with 40 OS2 controllers to provide complete control over the vertical vents, louvres and atrium vents. In normal operating mode, the actuators and controllers ensure that carbon dioxide and temperature levels are managed effectively throughout the building to maintain a comfortable working environment using signals from building management system. Night purging and cooling of the Science and Technology Centre is also handled automatically by the SE Controls’ system, which vents warm air and allows cooler air to enter the building.

However, in the event of a fire, the system operates in smoke ventilation mode to ensure that all corridors, escape routes and public areas are kept free from smoke to aid the rapid evacuation of the building.

Armourcoat were specified for an award-winning garden at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Designed by Jo Thompson Landscape & Garden Design, and built by The Outdoor Room, the silver medal winning Food & Environment Research Agency’s (FERA) show garden, incorporated Ductal® Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) panels.

The garden design, entitled ‘Stop the Spread’, highlights how plant pests and diseases and invasive non-native species could impact our gardens and countryside. A sunken garden featuring herbaceous planting and a sculpture by Tom Stogdon, is bordered by woodland trees and lush shade-loving plants. This is contrasted with an avenue of lifeless trees and a border of concrete-panelled walls with an intricate pattern illustrating the tree disease ‘Chalara’ (Ash dieback).

A series of large custom-made Ductal® panels were designed and manufactured by Armourcoat for the garden. Developed by Lafarge, Ductal® possesses a unique combination of superior properties including strength, ductility, durability and enhanced aesthetics. This enables designers to develop and realize new sculptural approaches to concrete forms. It can be cast in large thin panels with an outstanding level of surface finish detail, and has a strength and durability greater than natural stone.

Jo Thompson is a landscape and garden designer based in Kent. Jo designs a wide range of gardens from tiny rooftop spaces to residential gardens, public spaces and country estates, both in the UK and overseas.

Baxi Commercial Division has supplied five floor standing condensing boilers for a refurbishment of Wigan Town Hall’s heating system which has shown a 22% energy saving over the year to May 2012, compared with the previous year’s usage. This saving was made despite the heating remaining operational until the end of May 2012 compared to 2011 when it was switched off in early April.

The five Potterton Commercial Sirius 160kW floor standing condensing boilers were selected by consulting engineers NPS North West Ltd., in a joint venture with Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council.

The NPS Group specialises in providing property design and management services to both public and private sectors and is wholly owned by the public sector. A spokesman commented: “These boilers replace units which had reached the end of their operational lives and so had become less efficient and less reliable. As access to the plant room was via weight restricted stairs and lifts we needed boilers that had low individual weight and had compact dimensions. The Client was very pleased with the project and especially the 22% saving in gas use over a measured 12 months.”

The boilers were installed in the third floor plant room at Wigan Town Hall by Hayman Mechanical Services Ltd. This floor also provides office accommodation, so the Sirius FS range’s low operating noise level makes it a good choice for such locations. As well as being quiet in operation, this range is perfect for refurbishment projects as each boiler is compact and lightweight for its output, fitting through a standard doorway and, importantly in this case, fitting in a small lift. The boilers serve both constant and variable temperature circuits, running fan convectors, air handling units and radiators.

New pipework was installed to each of the boilers, with the headers connected to existing pump circuits. The heating system is connected to a Building Energy Management System which provides monitoring and control functions including zone control. Potterton Commercial’s Sirius FS is a technically sophisticated range of floor standing, stainless steel condensing boilers, backed by a comprehensive five year warranty.

Using the latest stainless steel heat exchanger technology in conjunction with a sophisticated controls system, the range delivers maximum condensing boiler performance. Histoglass have supplied their extremely thin high-performance double glazing system for the Victorian, Grade II Listed landmark property Pioneer House in Dewsbury.

Pioneer House has dominated Dewsbury’s skyline since 1878 when it was built for Dewsbury’s Pioneer Industrial Society as a place from which to sell its produce and wares. There have been a wide variety of tenants over the years including a theatre, library, French-polishers, butchers, cobblers and a restaurant.

Kirklees Council have required the prior owner to sell the building in order to protect the building from further decay and they are working with The Princes Trust to revamp the building and bring it back into full use.

The window project includes more than 200 original windows to be rot repaired, draught-proofed, re-glazed and renovated. There is a variety of sash windows, casements and doors.

Most existing windows have a rebate depth of about 22mm allowing more than enough space for the use of the Histoglass D13 System. In the case of Pioneer House, Histoglass advised Aedas architects on the use of the D13 System, which has a spacer bar of 6mm and an inner and outer pane of 3mm, achieving a U-Value of 1.5. Compared to the approximate U-value of 5.6 of the existing single glazing, this will make an enormous difference to the heat-loss through the glazing.

Many Victorian buildings have curved units in the top sash and that’s no different in Pioneer House. As the main purpose is to maintain the existing window frames, many units were made to template to fit the frames perfectly.

Histoglass worked closely with Sash Windows Northwest Ltd to achieve the highest possible quality.

In critical areas, toughened inner and outer panes were used. The beauty of the Kitemark stamps for toughened glazing is that we now put them as a line stamp on the edge of the pane, so that, once a pane has been installed, the

stamp disappears behind the putty or bead. “Little details like these are very important to us”, Michiel Brouns, Managing Director of Histoglass explains. “We supply the ultimate thin double glazing in both aesthetics and quality currently available on the market and we achieve this by our relentless drive for quality and attention to detail. The spacer bar, for instance was coloured in RAL 9001 to perfectly match the colour of the paint work on the frames.”

Appleton Manor in Oxfordshire is a Tudor manor house where a pool room with a centre pivoted double glazed wall, was recently created by D R Services. The entire wall opens to create a roofed family room containing showers, a kitchen and changing rooms, next to the outdoor pool.

The opening, on the southern side of the pool room, is about 12 metres wide and four metres high with eight centre pivoting doors. The double glazing has a U value of 1.6W/m² and the doors are brush sealed. In addition to this wall, D R Services created a clerestory style roof light, ten metres by one metre in three sections, on the north side of the building.

Each of the doors is almost 1.6 metres wide. Critical problems included draught exclusion, manipulating these very large and heavy doors and providing suitable locking. Each complete door weighed in excess of 425kg.

The job was awarded to the company because of its long experience of partnering with the architect Stephen Marshall. “We have the mechanical engineering and glass engineering expertise and as a result we have a good idea of what will work,” said D R Services director Julie Jarvis. “We've found this niche of having the site understanding and the academic knowledge and bringing the two together. The architect knew we had solved the practical problems on another project with a similar design, so we have now been able to take it to another large sized project having already eliminated potential difficulties.”

The Village Green, launched in the middle of April this year, is the latest project from Creative Network Partners. Set in Hackney Downs Studios, The Village Green is a brand new independent East End experience; a shopping and cultural development initially incorporating five local small businesses but with the possibility of further expansion. Hackney Downs Studios was a fairly unprepossessing redundant printworks when Creative Network Partners took it over towards the end of 2011. Architects Iolanda Bianchi and Mirko Lupo’s conversion task involved a great deal of creative restoration and adaptation as they set out to transform the Studios from a large, fairly open works area into the attractive Village Green format of five separate shops.

Two of the conversion problems were the need to build a new mezzanine floor structure above the shops and to ensure that the interiors of the shopping areas were quiet and intimate. These two problems were actually rolled into one as the Architects used Marmox Heraklith Wood Wool Panels as the cover material and as the final decoration layer. Heraklith wood wool panels are a natural product consisting of certified spruce wood, which originates in North European timber production forests and are produced with respect for the highest ecological, social and ethical standards.

Heraklith panels are multipurpose and can be used internally or externally on walls, floors and ceilings. Being designed with an open surface structure they hold great acoustic properties that contribute to a quieter and more comfortable living and working space.

These hygroscopic panels allow the building to breathe by absorbing the moisture in the air and releasing it back when most needed, when it’s dry. They are also renowned for their fire proofing qualities and in the event of fire they will protect for up to 90 minutes allowing ceiling and wall constructions to stay intact. They do not melt and drip, create fumes or toxic gases and they do not spread fire.

Marley Eternit has become the first roofing manufacturer to introduce a mechanical fixing system for mortar bedded ridge and hip tiles, helping meet current NHBC technical standards. The NHBC requires all homes that it guarantees to have mechanically fixed ridges and hips – either through a complete dry fix system or using mortar bedding with additional mechanical fixings. However, a recent NHBC survey of 3,000 ongoing sites found that where ridges and hips were still bedded in mortar, a third of them had no mechanical fixings. A Healthy Dose Of Tarkett Flooring WHEN tasked with replacing the flooring in two respite care centres, for Ward Flooring Solutions, Tarkett was the obvious choice. The Shaw Healthcare and Kent County Council centres needed updating and, wanting to create a more homely feel, Ward Flooring selected Tarkett Safetred Wood. The Tarkett range provided the functionality needed for a respite care centre without compromising on aesthetics.

More than 1,400 square metres of the flooring has been installed in numerous dining areas, bedrooms and hallways used by patients.

BSRIA Tests For Part ‘F’ Failure Testing of domestic ventilation systems under Approved Document F of the Building Regulations has been compulsory since October 2010.

Unfortunately it has proved a nightmare for the construction industry with a ridiculously high percentage of failures.

BSRIA Compliance, a company dedicated to testing to prove compliance to the ever more stringent requirements of the Building Regulations, lays the initial blame for these shortcomings on a mixture of poor design, but mainly a disappointingly poor standard of installation, but also points out that the testing methods originally used [and in many cases still in use] can be wildly inaccurate unless proper corrections are taken to account for the idiosyncrasies of each system and the appliances they use.

The latter contention was supported in a recent workshop organised by Modern Built Environment, which quoted the measurement of ventilation performance as the most significant deficiency in Building Performance measurement. BSRIA maintains that there is a domestic ventilation testing procedure that is simple, quick and accurate, using the most appropriate equipment, a Power Flow Hood.

The Hood contains a fan that rotates at a controlled speed allowing the unit to achieve a zero pressure balance usually within 4-20 seconds when placed over inlet or outlet. This ‘unconditional’ test method overcomes the problems inherent with site-specific conditions such as fan types and adjustments, airflow direction and instrumentation characteristics. The Flow Hood is an air volume flow meter designed to eliminate back pressure and turbulent flow effects. It is based on a zero pressure method that compensates for the resistance of the measuring instrument and the characteristics of the air distribution system. It also senses air flow direction so that the unit can be used for supply or extract purposes without any configuration change. It sounds simple and indeed it is, providing an easy solution to what has proved a thorny problem for many builders large and small as the BSRIA team, that has been successfully testing on site for Part ‘F’ compliance throughout the UK, can confirm. Returning to the reasons for failures in domestic ventilation systems BSRIA maintains that most problems arise poor workmanship.

Although fan manufacturers design their fans to comply with Regulations these frequently fail to operate to their stated performance due to poor installation particularly when flexible pipework is used. Part ‘F’ failure rates here have been quoted as high as 95% and in one recent case six metres of flexible pipe had been stuffed into a wall cavity predictably preventing all circulation. While this example is extreme it is symptomatic of the lack of care taken to support flexible pipe and maintain clear air flow.

BSRIA is in process of producing a guide to the accurate measurement of airflow rates and it is to be hoped that this will aid the industry in correcting the present, almost farcical, failures to comply with Approved Document F. www.bsria.co.uk ENQUIRY CARD/ONLINE NO 56

London Ambulance Glazing Audits London Ambulance as responsible employers who were looking to make sure the glazing across their sites met all the required standards outlined in Regulation 14 (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, this act covers the safety of glass within the workplace.

To this end they then went looking for a company able to undertake this type of survey, reporting and carry out any remedial works necessary for compliance of the act.

Environmental Control Films Ltd were their preferred choice and so they instructed them to undertake the surveys on 83 of their sites within London, over a two month period the surveys were undertaken and the reports delivered back to London Ambulance.

The findings on the whole were very positive for London Ambulance but where glass the occasional did not meet the required standard a polyester optically clear safety film was applied to the glass by Environmental Control Films, this film will increase the tensile strength of the glass and hold it together in the event of a breakage, it will bring standard 4 mm glass up to EN 12600 2B2 safety standard, necessitating the need and high cost to remove the existing glass and re-glaze, the film used is warranted for 10 years with a life expectancy of 15 years.

Timoleon Under-Floor Heating Installed In Grade II Listed Country House When the present owner purchased this magnificent and imposing grade II listed country house situated in Dorset, which was originally built in the seventeenth century, his first priority was to restore the building to its original state.

However with respect to the central heating the owner decided to modernise by installing under-floor heating on the ground floor and the first floor, whilst keeping some of the old style cast iron radiators.

The ground floor had to be reconstructed as the old timber joists were past repair, so a solid concrete floor was laid.

Timoleon Ltd., specialists in all aspects of underfloor heating, were asked to produce detailed designs for heating the ground and first floor; the plans submitted included Timoleon's Staple System, ideal for the new screeded ground floor and the company’s award winning LowBoard for the first floor. The Staple system on the ground floor provided a quick, flexible method of installing under-floor heating onto a screeded floor. The Timoleon gridded insulation was laid onto the sub floor, the 18mm, PE-RT pipe, at 200mm centres, was then stapled onto the insulation with barbed staples, which can be done by hand or Stapler, following the grids clearly marked. Once the pipe work had been pressure tested, a screed was applied and the final floor coverings of carpet tiles, flagstones and timber were layed. As on the first floor there was a need to maintain a low level, the Timoleon LowBoard was ideal, giving an overall height of only 13mm. The LowBoard panels were laid on top of 25mm plywood panels, which in turn were laid on the existing joist. The LowBoard panels are made from moisture resistance MDF with an aluminium layer on the underside, which helps spread the heat upwards into the room. The panels are pre-routed enabling the installer to gently tread in the 12mm PE-RT pipe swiftly and with little effort. 6mm ply was laid on top of the LowBoard followed by carpet on the majority of the first floor. www.timoleon.co.uk ENQUIRY CARD/ONLINE NO 58

Affordable ‘Green’ Energy For The Shaftsbury Stately Home St. Giles House in Wimborne St. Giles is the main dwelling on the Shaftsbury Estate and is one of Dorset’s truly grand houses. The “first stone of my house at St. Giles” was laid in 1650 by Sir Anthony Ashley-Cooper, who was later to become Lord Shaftsbury on his appointment as Lord Chancellor of England.

Although much altered over the years, St. Giles House remains as beautiful as it is impressive.

Unfortunately neither energy conservation nor efficient heating were priorities with 17th Century architects, so that fuel bills had become alarming in this modern age when conventionally generated energy prices spiral ever upwards and the carbon footprint for St. Giles was also approaching the size of a seven league boot. Consequently, when a major renovation of the house was planned, isoenergy, expert in all forms of renewable energy, was asked to design a system that would provide hot water and central heating more cheaply as well as being considerably more ecologically sound. isonergy’s full brief was to use renewable energy to produce heating and hot water, to reduce the house’s fossil fuel dependency and its carbon footprint, to reduce running costs substantially and to achieve these aims making optimum use of Government grants and subsidies. The company’s eventual design was for a hybrid system utilising the lake in the grounds as the prime energy source for hot water & heating boosted by solar thermal panels on the roof of the main house. In addition the house’s walled garden [those gardeners knew the sunniest places] proved the perfect site for a line of 168 photovoltaic ground mounted panels, each panel capable of producing 190Watts of electricity.

The choice of the lake as the prime energy source was a natural one since water is the most effective and reliable heat provider through the year. A 3,000 metres closed loop energy collector containing an anti-freeze solution was sunk to a depth safe from boats and fisherman. Having absorbed heat from the lake, the liquid in the loops is passed to three manifolds on the shore and thence led up to the Plant Room in the house via a 90mm plastic

pipe. Here it enters two super efficient Viessmann Vitocal Heat Pumps linked in a master/slave conformation and each with an energy capacity of 45kW. By a sophisticated heat exchange process involving the pumps’ Compliant Scroll Compressors, the heat input is squeezed up to a temperature suitable for the house’s hot water. The energy then passes into two linked doubleskinned cylinders each of 1,000 litres capacity, one for central heating the other for hot water requirements, while the original input liquid, now at a temperature close to zero, is re-circulated back to the lake.

One of the advantages of the ISO system is that the various renewable energy elements combine effectively so that the roof mounted solar thermal panels with a surface area of 16 square metres and a potential 12kW output cuts in whenever the weather permits to increase the temperature in the hot water cylinders and reduce the requirement from the lake-fed system. The PV panels arrayed in the walled garden with a total output of 32kW, serve a different purpose. Initially fed into St. Giles House’s electrical system [including of course meeting the electrical needs of the Viessmann heat pumps] the panels then provide an income via the Feed In Tariff [FIT] of 34.5p per kilowatt hour of electricity passed into the National Grid.

The isoenergy remit to provide renewable resources for heating and hot water are clearly met and, thanks to the high efficiency rating of the heat pumps and superior insulation on the hot water cylinders, carbon emissions have also been sharply reduced.

That leaves us with the energy savings to be expected when the house’s renovations are done and the system comes into full operation. The saving in fuel costs is confidently predicted to be around £16,000 per year, mainly from the underwater sourced heat pumps. That is impressive enough but when annual subsidies [partly estimated until the Renewable Heat Incentive Phase 2 is in place] of well over £21,000 are added, the figures are truly remarkable. BUPA’s Winter Air Curtain Cure

Heat Pump Sizing All Figured Out

The versatility and aesthetics of the Rund air curtain from JS Air Curtains has cured BUPA’s winter draught problems at the reception of its Health and Wellbeing UK offices in Staines.

The attractive air curtain has been custom designed so it can be easily removed during the summer months when it isn’t required. Despite underfloor heating and the heat gains from the glass façade, the large reception atrium suffered from cold draughts during the winter as over 11,000 employees enter and exit the building through its revolving doors.

JS Air Curtains’ solution was to vertically mount a 2.5m high, low temperature, hot water-heated Rund air curtain to the side of the entrance.

The air curtain creates a warm air barrier across the inner opening of the doorway. This stops the revolving door acting like a slow moving fan, bringing in cold air with every turn. Technal Windows And Curtain Walling For New Flagship School Of Medicine In Cardiff A new flagship medical education centre in Cardiff features aluminium curtain walling options and casement window systems from Technal. Designed by Powell Dobson Architects and built by Vinci Construction UK, The Cochrane Building accommodates the School of Medicine on Cardiff University’s Heath Park Campus at the University Hospital of Wales. It is now one of the largest facilities of its kind in the UK, home to over 3,000 students and staff, and is a major international centre for medical teaching and research.

The brief for the project was to bring all the school’s departments together in a single location and to create an exciting and vibrant place for learning. The age and condition of the previous facilities on the Heath Park campus and a steep increase in student numbers had led to an acute shortage of suitable facilities for medical professionals. The new building is designed around a central atrium and features extensive use of Technal’s GEODEMX curtain walling to allow high levels of natural light into the centre of the building.

The capped visible grid option was specified for the main entrance and the top two floors of this six-storey scheme. Structural glazing with a mechanical toggle rather than silicone bonding was used for the full height stair towers at the ends of the atrium, which provided a seamless, flush finish and an effective contrast to the capped curtain walling in the other areas.

Ribbon glazing on some elevations and opening vents in the curtain walling were created from Technal’s FXi65 projecting side and top hung window systems. These allow the building to be naturally ventilated, drawing fresh air in through the exterior façades. A distinctive feature for the building envelope is a series of staggered aluminium panels finished in a bright lime green. These units were fixed into the window or curtain walling frames and provide a lively accent to the scheme’s otherwise neutral palette of gun metal grey and white render.

Commenting on the glazing specification for the project, Mark Jones, Project Architect at Powell Dobson Architects, said, “Lots of natural light and good levels of natural ventilation were central to the design of this building – and

the curtain walling and window systems were key to delivering that. We are impressed with the Technal products and would definitely consider using them again on other projects.”

Fabricated and installed by Vision 2000, the Technal systems were polyester powder coated in dark grey and glazed in grey tinted solar control glass.

Passive ventilation louvres were also inserted into the window frames on one elevation. One of the challenges for this project was its highly restricted hospital site with no room for material storage. The Vision team overcame this with a phased delivery and installation programme and the use of Technal products that are designed to reduce time on site. As this project demonstrates, Technal’s GEODE-MX curtain walling can be used to create a wide variety of architectural compositions from a single grid system – low to high rise façades, horizontal or vertical emphasis, and ribbon, structural, faceted, beaded and sloped glazing.

Technal’s FXi65 casement window system, which is fully compatible with GEODE-MX curtain walling, features curved profiles and delivers superior thermal efficiency using a 19mm flush polyamide thermal break and innovative gasket detailing to meet or exceed the latest Building Regulations.

It can accommodate 17mm up to 48mm glazing units for wider choice to provide additional thermal or acoustic performance. Configuration options include fixed lights, top, side and bottom hung, tilt/turn and tilt/slide. The 6,300 sqm Cochrane Building is a low energy building that is designed to BREEAM ‘excellent’ aspirations. Its design includes elements such as passive ventilation, a building envelope for minimal air leakage, good natural light, energy-efficient lighting and controls, solar shading, high levels of insulation, a green roof, solar water heating and high efficiency boilers.

The scheme is designed as three interlinked areas unified by two atrium spaces. It accommodates a twin-storey inter-professional library, stateof-the-art clinical skills simulation training facilities for medical students, postgraduate teaching areas, seminar space, student support services, group study rooms and an innovative ‘learning hub’.

Professor Yi Captures The ‘Spirit Of The Location’ At 150Th Jubilee Celebration Against the spectacular background of Tower Bridge and the Shard, Professor Eun Young Yi shared his controversial architectural perspective on the London skyline at GEZE UK’s exclusive evening reception. More than 150 architects gathered on the deck of HMS Admiral Landside, enjoying drinks, canapés and an inspirational view, before listening to Professor Yi’s theory about a simple, more spiritual approach to new architecture. “If we look at the phenomenon of the architecture today, we can find a growing degree of disorientation,” explained Yi. “What we have to create is architecture which stays true to its essence and its implicitness. We can only make our world beautiful and admirable with such aesthetics.”

The evening began with introductions by GEZE UK’s managing director Kaz Spiewakowski and GEZE’s worldwide managing director for sales, Michael Leuchte, before Professor Yi took to the stage for a 45 minute presentation of his work, including the famous Stuttgart City Library.

Outlining the cultural and historical significance of the Stuttgart station area, Yi explained his inspiration for the monolithic design. Unpeeling the building’s layers through a series of pictures, he was able to show its links to classical architecture, ranging from Pantheon to Forum. (62%) and injuries (65%) took place only in Pakistan, Iraq and Afghanistan.

As the US State Department makes clear: “we are facing a more decentralised and geographically dispersed terrorist threat” as military operations continue to weaken terror group leaderships and organisation. The attacks in Boston and London probably support that assessment.

Countering the terrorist threat is, of course, a matter for the intelligence and military communities, backed by long-term and pragmatic political policies. You can’t defeat political and religious ideology by military force alone. However, we have to recognise that terrorism does pose an international threat, particularly from explosive devices, and in that context, a first objective of governments worldwide is to remove explosives from their arsenal.

However, what many architects and specifiers don’t realise is that the glass and glazing industries have been fighting back, to rewrite the rules on stand-off distances and, specifically, on the danger posed by flying glass.

At Wrightstyle, we have devoted considerable resource to developing and testing our high-specification systems. Importantly, our advanced systems, designed to withstand ballistic or bomb attack, have been tested as one integrated assembly because, if the worst happens, the glass will only be as safe as its framing system – and vice versa.

Real testing is important because computer simulations can only tell you so much. Much better, if you’re testing a glazing system against a bomb attack, to put a bomb beside that system, blow it up, and see what happens.

In terms of the glass and glazing industry, it would be wrong to assume that high explosive alone is the main cause of death and injury when a bomb detonates. In urban areas, between 80-85% of all secondary blast injuries are caused by flying glass.

When a bomb detonates, it produces gases at very high temperatures. This in turn leads to a rapid expansion of air and the creation of a shock wave travelling at supersonic speeds. The shock wave lasts only a few milliseconds and is then followed by an equally sudden but longer-lasting drop in pressure. It’s the enormous impact of the shock wave and the subsequent suction that shatters the glass and distorts the framing.

Overall, blast injuries result in mortality ranging between 7.8% in open air to 49% in a confined space. A majority of victims (70%) will sustain soft tissue injury, and traumatic amputations will occur in approximately 11% of cases.

Most people killed or badly injured in a blast involving high-order explosives (HE) are affected by either primary or secondary blast injuries. Primary HE blast injuries are caused by high-pressure gases from the explosion rapidly expanding to produce a supersonic blast wave. This has devastating effects on human air-filled tissue, particularly the lungs and gastrointestinal tract. Primary blast injuries are generally fatal.

Secondary blast injuries caused by flying objects, for example glass fragments, are much more common than primary blast injuries and are the most usual cause of death in blast victims. The penetrating injuries occur most often in the exposed areas of the body such as the head, neck, and extremities.

For example, in New York on 9/11, 15,500 windows were damaged within a mile of Ground Zero – nearly 9,000 within half that distance. Many injuries were glass-related.

That’s what we did, at an independent UK test facility inside a secure RAF base.

First we detonated a charge of 500 kg of TNT-equivalent explosive adjacent to the glazing system. That’s the size of a lorry bomb.

We immediately followed that with a simulated car bomb attack (100 kg of TNT).

The lorry bomb was detonated 75 metres from the test rig and the car bomb was detonated at a distance of 20 metres, producing a higher loading on the façade.

Both tests were equally successful.

Reinforcing the importance of integration, the Wrightstyle system’s strength was achieved through a glazing technique that bonds the glass to its framing support, so that in an explosion the components work together to safely absorb the shock and retain the glazing elements.

New Innovation For Schueco Super-Insulated Façade System Provides Economic Solution A new innovation from leading UK building envelope specialist, Schueco UK, is the FW 50+ SG.SI, a large-scale, aluminium, structural glazing façade system which combines an attractive flush-fitted appearance with outstanding insulation values. The Schueco FW 50+ SG.SI optimises thermal insulation through the use of double - or triple - glazing up to 64 mm thick with enhanced isolator technology and features a new economical option for fixing the glass units to the aluminium structure. Contraflam® Provides Fire Safety Assurance In Iconic Building’s New Atrium A stunning glass atrium in the newly opened £85 million extension to the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) has been created using CONTRAFLAM® fully insulating clear, fire-resistant safety glass manufactured by GLASSOLUTIONS Solaglas.

Installed by leading façade designer and contractor Charles Henshaw & Sons, the fire rated glass atrium provides protection from the first floor through to the roof level, and helps to create a light and spacious area.

The extension to one of Edinburgh’s most iconic buildings was designed by BDP Architects and completed by main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine, with project management by Mace Group.

Manufactured by GLASSOLUTIONS Solaglas, in conjunction with sister-company Vetrotech, at their dedicated Coventry production facility, two formats of CONTRAFLAM were supplied for the EICC project to suit the different requirements within the new atrium. Henshaw installed 1,500m2 of EI30 CONTRAFLAM (30 minute integrity and insulation) in screens within the main atrium and 250m2 of EI60 CONTRAFLAM (60 minutes integrity and insulation) in screens on the ground floor areas.

In addition to the CONTRAFLAM glazing, GLASSOLUTIONS also supplied designed, manufactured and installed five rooflights, one of which is used in the roof of the atrium, utilising SGG COOL-LITE® solar control glass.

Beauty MakeOver Treatment From Remmers The Beauty Shop in Huddersfield required an upgrade to the flooring of the ground-floor treatment and tanning rooms. Although the existing floor was still in relatively good condition, the Salon required a change to the original colour scheme and selected a two coloured Remmers Colorid Flake system to be installed throughout. The revamp also required a corresponding darker floor to be installed in the tanning room due to the nature of the treatments.

All of the floor areas were initially prepared; base coated with Epoxy BS3000 and then flaked with Colorid.

Foremans Supplies Interim Classrooms To Help Meet Increasing Demand For Primary School Places In London Foremans Relocatable Building Systems, the UK’s largest supplier of pre-owned Portakabin buildings, has supplied two interim teaching buildings to primary schools in the London Borough of Newham, just eight weeks from receipt of order.

North Beckton Primary and Colegrave School each had a need for two self-contained temporary classrooms while redevelopment works are carried out to meet the rising demand for school places. North Beckton Primary has been taken from two to three form entry, increasing the number of places from 60 to 90. A double classroom block is now in use for the next two years until a new permanent building is constructed.

Commenting on the project, Manjit Rai, Head Teacher at North Beckton Primary, said, “Feedback about the interim classrooms from teaching staff and the parents of children in year four who are now using them has been very positive. Green And Pleasant Screens They absorb pollutants, deter graffiti artists and have a calming effect on those who live around them. Sean Farrell of green screen supplier Mobilane explains why ‘living walls’ can help us breathe more easily - and add wow factor to a scheme.

Hardly a day goes by without a news story decrying pollution levels in the UK. Most recently, London’s North Circular has been identified by Transport for London (DfL) as the capital’s most polluted road.

Big problems call for creative thinking and green screens – or living walls – represent a cost effective, instant weapon for tackling pollutants. Green screens also absorb noise, boost biodiversity levels and, quite simply, look great adding a welcome organic counterpoint to the bricks and mortar of urban development.

Living walls are certainly garnering some high-profile supporters in the fight against poor air quality. London mayor Boris Johnson has secured funding for the London Clean Air Fund from the DfL to reduce vehicle-generated pollutants. Living walls are to be a key weapon in the fight against poor air quality in the city.

Politicians' and business people’s interest in green walls is vindicated by the latest academic research.

In the July 2012 edition of the journal Environmental Science and Technology, researchers from Birmingham and Lancaster universities investigated the potential health improvements that could be generated if more vegetation was strategically positioned in our busy roads.

The research found that there could be a 30% reduction in our streets’ pollution levels through the intelligent use of living walls. As well as turning carbon dioxide into oxygen through photosynthesis, plants clean the air 070

by soaking up nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter. The bonus of using green screens compared to trees is the huge amount of space and time they save. A 17-23 sq m Mobilane green screen will remove the same number of pollutant particulates from the air as an average-sized city tree; the ivy that the screen consists of is also particularly effective at absorbing pollutants. A green screen can be installed with instant effect, while a tree can take many years to reach any stature.

Mobilane’s green screens were installed at the Olympic stadium’s athletes’ entrance, and are also being used extensively as hoardings in London’s huge Crossrail transport project and a scheme to regenerate Ponders End in Enfield - also in the capital.

They have also been used in supermarket Waitrose, further education colleges and even a multistorey car park on the Monaco Grand Prix circuit.

But living walls are not just about improving air quality. When used in a targeted way, they can deter graffiti, promote more sensible road use, enhance security and privacy, and promote a sense of calm. Living walls can also form an integral part of a roof garden where space can be at a premium. Underpinning all these uses is an aesthetic element. Walls can be dour and unattractive.

But with a living wall, an inert, lifeless space can be transformed into something vibrant and attractive. Lanes No Dig Technology On Shopping List For Store Construction Firm A construction company had Lanes for Drains ‘no dig’ technology and expertise on the shopping list when it needed to urgently solve a drainage problem just before the opening of a new supermarket.

Civil engineering firm Britcon called in Lanes for Drains to carry out a pre-handover survey and final clean of drainage lines at the food store in South Yorkshire.

HD video footage from a remote-controlled robotic camera, operated by the Lanes engineers, showed a wooden stake had penetrated a storm drain underneath the building.

The conventional solution would have been to dig a hole in the floor of the new supermarket to reach the pipe and remove the stake – which would have delayed the opening of the store and incurred significant costs. However, Lanes engineers were able to advise that their no dig expertise meant the solution would be far less drastic and time-consuming.

They were able to deploy a powerful remote-controlled KA TE robot cutter, sending it through the pipe, underneath the building, directly to the location of the wooden stake. Terram Truckpave Upgrades Busy Industrial Depot A large 9000m² site in Oldham Broadway Business Park, owned by Electricity North West Ltd. had been heavily under utilised. This was due to the unstabilised surface within the depot yard, which was prone to flooding and clearly unsuitable for HGVs and even forklift trucks could only be used intermittently, when weather conditions permitted. The options of tarmac or reinforced concrete were quickly discarded, partly due to the cost of stabilisation prior to installation and partly on environmental grounds since the surface water run-off from such a large area would have a significant impact on the surface water drainage network locally.

The ideal solution came from Dunster Consulting Ltd. of Pately Bridge, who had previous experience of Terram Truckpave, Fiberweb’s robust and durable porous pavin.

Terram Truckpave 100, laid on a free draining granular stone sub base, was selected as the surface course for this heavily trafficked area, amounting to some 3,700m². Terram Truckpave is extremely simple and quick to install. Each paver weighs only 12kgs – substantially lighter than concrete alternatives - and is compliant with HSE manual handling limits.

The pavers (600x400x100mm) are simply butted together and the series of cells in each unit offer a void area of 55% which can be filled with angular gravel, or top soiled and seeded to provide a grass finish. Terram Truckpave provides a permanently stable, robust and durable surface laid on a permeable free draining sub-base ,achieving a sustainable drainage solution. The paving is flexible and resistant to cracking with high compressive strength. On this project, as is usually the case where composite panels are required, the panel manufacturer and building designer or developer worked together to look at the materials available, the aesthetics and the performance that needed to be achieved.

Modern materials also provide a greater range of surface textures and colours, which means being able to offer more options to specifiers and developers looking to create engaging buildings.

For many building designers, it is simply a case of understanding the materials available in the creation of composite panels and this is particularly important when it comes to choice of colour.

Aesthetics are still the number one reason that architectural panels are chosen – especially for modern urban and city centre locations. On a recent project, our Aluglaze composite panels were used for The Link, a flagship community building for young people, which is based under the Harrow Manor Way flyover in South Thamesmead, London.

Julian Sargent, MD of partitioning specialists Style, explains how to correctly interpret acoustic-rating reports to ensure final installation delivers required levels of privacy.

The need to maximise available space within any commercial or public sector building has led to a noticeable increase in the use of moveable partitions. However, improved flexibility is only a benefit if it delivers a good acoustic barrier between the separated areas, effectively allowing events, meetings and lectures to run concurrently alongside each other.

It is perhaps no surprise that research has shown that noise interference is detrimental to pupil performance, slows recovery rates for patients in hospitals and generally reduces the efficiency and well being of staff and visitors.

So, what do you need to do to ensure your specification results in an installation that is functional and acoustically sound?

Hi-tech solutions Many partitioning systems require the seals at the top and bottom of each panel to be manually expanded using a crank handle. Whilst these systems can provide very acceptable levels of acoustic integrity, technology has moved on.

With the new semi-automatic systems, lightweight panels are slid effortlessly into place at which point the automatic expansion of heavy duty rubber seals is initialised. Pressure-sensitive, the seals expand to exactly the required level, creating a strong dividing wall that can provide an acoustic barrier of up to Rw55dB. Further advanced technology provides fully automatic solutions with even higher acoustic ratings.

Interpreting Acoustic Ratings It is genuinely possible for a choir to rehearse in one half of a room whilst a lecture takes place alongside - but only if the installation of the partitioning system is undertaken with full consideration of the structure of the building and the intended use of the space.

The R’w rating refers to the ‘in-situ’ acoustic performance of a partitioning system taking into consideration the flanking paths (where sound passes over the top, around or under the primary partition) and is different to a product’s laboratory tested Rw rating. The harsh reality is that the final installation of a moveable partition will rarely replicate the controlled conditions of a laboratory, as flanking will usually occur to some extent.

The Rw rating is still relevant but only as a tool for comparison against

other similar products rather than as a reflection of real-life installation and use.

Call in the Experts There are, of course, many occasions when it is clear that a proposed product will more than meet the specified acoustic criteria. Where there is potential for wider variance, it is important to employ the expertise of a qualified acoustician to offer objective, transparent advice.

Although it is difficult to quantify the impact of flanking prior to completion of a project, a professional survey of the room will identify problem areas and offer extremely valuable, pre-installation guidance. Consideration will be given to the overall quality and robustness of surrounding walls, ceiling and floors – taking into account construction, materials utilised and age.

Site plans can then be detailed to ensure appropriate steps are taken to minimise flanking. Absorptive treatment may be recommended to further improve acoustics.

Ask the Right Questions Firstly, check that the actual manufacturer is clearly stated in any partitioning system quotation, detailing provisions for long-term maintenance and repairs. Ensure the quote also includes appropriate acoustic test certificates. These should clearly state the system being recommended

and again include manufacturer’s details. Even if this certificate has been produced however, it is only valid if the manufacturer has confirmed it can be used by the particular supplier/installer you are contracting. Proof of this authority must be established with the manufacturer.

Check acoustic test certificates clearly state the name of an independent laboratory and that the product has been tested to latest standards - BS EN ISO 140-3:1995 or BS 2750-3:1995. As previously explained on-site tests are meaningless and should not be relied upon. A laboratory test for acoustic performance is standardised and directly comparable.

Lastly, double-check that the test certificate matches the product being recommended for installation. Different products have different mechanisms for creating the seal and deliver a wide variance in acoustic performance.

We’ve given this advice list to a number of companies so far – all who have said how helpful it is in clarifying the whole issue of acoustics. If you follow these points you shouldn’t go too far wrong, not only in determining the right product but the right supplier as well.

Now, for the 190,000 or so motorists that use the biggest ring road in the world every day, the new £75m Extra MSA provides a welcome opportunity to refresh and relax. While those wishing to stretch their legs can take a walk around the large lakeside terrace and landscaped grounds, most of the visitors need one thing and one thing only – fuel.

Extra MSA Group developed what is now Europe’s biggest petrol station on the Cobham site. With 36 forecourt pumps and six dedicated high-speed heavy goods vehicle (HGV) pumps – totalling 141 nozzles – it can serve around 3,500 vehicles a day.

Worthing based Electrical Services & Projects Ltd (ESP) won the contract to supply the electrical services to the Cobham Extra MSA. ESP’s director, Colin Garwood says, ‘We needed a fire detection system that could ensure complete safety for the those visiting and working at the service station, while minimising the possibility of unwanted alarms. Having previously worked with Southern Fire Alarms we brought them in to design, supply and commission a system that could fulfil these objectives, while we handled its installation.’

A BS 5389 compliant category L1 addressable fire detection system was recommended. An L1 system is designed for the protection of life and deploys automatic detectors throughout all areas of the building with the aim of providing the earliest possible warning.

Southern Fire Alarms sales consultant, David Fell, knew instantly which system would be most suitable. Asked to explain the rationale behind his decision, he replies, ‘We have worked with Hochiki Europe for many years and the quality of their products is second to none. Also, because of the way their systems are designed, we knew we could make significant time and cost savings on the project.’

The chosen system is based around Hochiki’s Enhanced Systems Protocol which is a robust total communications solution for intelligent fire detection and fully integrated systems. It has a multi-purpose structure that provides the flexibility and expansion to accommodate simple addressable systems, as well as integrated building management and complex life safety systems.

A wide variety of devices were installed including ALG-EN optical smoke sensors that feature Hochiki Europe’s High Performance Chamber Technology, which minimises the differences in sensitivity experienced in flaming and smouldering fires. In addition, HCPE-E call points, YBN-BSB base sounder beacons, ACB-E multi-heat sensors and CHQ-MRC mains relay controllers were used. Remarking on the speed at which the system was configured, Fell comments, ‘Once the base is installed, fitting the devices is a fast and efficient process – usually taking about 30 seconds. This is considerably quicker than most other products on the market.’

The building contains a large void due to its barrel vault roof design and this had to be covered by the fire detection system. The devices that are sited in this space were pre-programed in advance so that ESP could complete a second fix before the suspended ceiling was put in place. Fila Surface Care Regime Specified At The Hive A Fila surface care regime has been specified at The Hive - a partnership between Worcestershire County Council and the University of Worcester, and Europe's first joint university and public library. Locally-sourced Royal Forest Pennant brushed sandstone was installed, by W B Simpson & Sons (MIDLANDS) Ltd, throughout the main public floor - and was also specified externally. Stone treatments specified, as part of the Fila regime, included Fila Cleaner; LEED-compliant Fila W68 - a water-based stain-proofing protector - and Fila PS87, for ongoing deep cleaning.

The Fila regime commenced after installation, when Fila Cleaner was used to carry out an initial wash of all sandstone surfaces. The highly concentrated water-based formula is pH-neutral, leaves no residue and can safely be used on all natural surfaces. The stone was then treated with LEED-compliant Fila W68 – a stain-proofing protector which is designed for internal and exterior porous surfaces. The water-based treatment is non film-forming and seals and protects without altering appearance.

For ongoing maintenance, Fila Cleaner was specified once again, along with Fila PS87 for periodic deep cleaning. Fila PS87 is a 3-in-1 cleaner, stain and wax remover, which also removes epoxy grout residues. RMIG Provides Elegant Solar Shading For French Château An extensive decorative sunscreen using precision perforations from RMIG is forming part of a major refurbishment of a historic château in Saint-Avertin, France, which is being converted into a ‘mediatheque’ library designed by Tours based architects Dominique Blondel Architecte.

While the château’s individual architecture and external appearance has been preserved throughout the restoration, the interior of the building has been sensitively extended, modified and repurposed for its new role as an events centre and ‘mediatheque’ library, which revisits one of it’s former uses. The architects also incorporated an extensive sunscreen design to help provide shade and ensure thermal gain is reduced and the public areas are maintained at a comfortable temperature. RMIG France worked closely with the architects to create, prototype and develop the final perforated and laser cut patterns within the 130m2 of decorative solar shading panels, which are secured to the exterior of the building in front of the large windows, which allows natural light to enter due to the ‘netting’ effect of the perforation pattern used.

Once the final pattern was agreed, RMIG produced the design using a complex array of 15mm diameter round perforations and special laser cut shapes within 2 mm thick ‘Corten’ alloy steel. The architects chose Corten as it is designed to ‘rust’ when weathered, which was ideal for the design as it enhanced the aged and historic architecture of the château. Solarwall Delivers At New Parcelforce Distribution Center CA Group Limited has installed its SolarWall® transpired solar collector (TSC) technology at the new Royal Mail Parcelforce distribution center in Chorley, Lancashire. The 495m2 SolarWall® is the third consecutive TSC to be installed for Royal Mail as part of its corporate and social responsibility commitment, which requires that the business integrates sustainable design, where possible, to enable it to reduce its carbon footprint.

The technology, which uses solar radiation to deliver naturally warmed fresh air into buildings, has the highest known efficiency of any active solar technology in the world, generating up to 500 Watts of thermal energy per square metre of collector. It is estimated that the new installation will save the Royal Mail somewhere in the region of 145,508 kWh and 28.81 tonnes of CO2 per annum. Project development engineer, Andrew Brewster, is responsible for the sustainable and environmental delivery of projects for CA Group.

He explained: “SolarWall® was selected by the Royal Mail as part of its in-depth sustainability review, back in 2010. Marmox Multiboard Warms Rutland Cottage During the purchase of a delightful cottage in a rural location in Rutland the new owner noticed that the property seemed extremely cold. The main reasons appeared to be the fact that his new home had concrete flooring on the ground floor and solid exterior walls of concrete blocks faced with local stone throughout.

To overcome the problem he decided to line the floor and walls with some form of insulation that was effective yet quick and simple to install. After considering the options available he decided that Marmox Multiboard fitted the bill on both counts.

Multiboard is manufactured from extruded polystyrene with both faces of the board covered with close woven fibreglass mesh embedded in a cement polymer mortar.

This creates a board that is lightweight yet extremely strong with a high degree of thermal insulation [a conductivity of 0.03 watt/mK for the technically minded] and is totally impervious to any water penetration from outside. This Marmox product is also simple to fix to solid or stud walls being easy to handle due to its light weight and simply cut or sawn to the size required using conventional tools. In the Rutland cottage, 50mm Multiboard was laid on the concrete slab floors.

On top was placed a 12mm ply layer and then low level underfloor heating before a surface layer of stone tiles in keeping with the house’s appearance. In the ceiling of the ground floor 10mm Multiboard was applied between the joists. BIM Helps Deliver New Sports College In a bid to create more sustainable buildings and to improve efficiency during the construction process Balfour Beatty Engineering Services, one of the UK’s leading mechanical and electrical contractors, is using Building Information Modelling (BIM) to aid in the delivery of a new sports technical college in Stoke-on-Trent.

Designed by architects Aedas and constructed by Balfour Beatty under a design and build contract with Stoke-on-Trent City Council, the new teaching and classroom block at Holden Lane High School Specialist Sports College will feature curriculum-based hubs for teaching and training which allow for their own teaching and breakout spaces along with a large indoor area for use in inclement weather.

Instrumental to the design process of this innovative new school building is Balfour Beatty’s adoption of BIM. At Holden Lane High School, Balfour Beatty has created a fully collaborated 3D model of the M&E (mechanical and electrical) systems enabling all construction partners to fully comprehend and visualise the complexity in construction sequencing and methodology.

“BIM is a great way to pre-empt the issues you might encounter in a building project, even before you lay a single foundation. It allows us to digitally model the different elements of a building in real time” commented Mike Cooke, regional director at Balfour Beatty Engineering Services. “The benefits are being able to build in a virtual environment and sharing all information between partners so that potential building integration issues and on-site clashes are eliminated.”

The adoption of BIM for the construction of the school means that Balfour Beatty can build a theoretical model which can predict how the building will perform. This in turn eases integration of building services and the elimination of any issues between trades. The approach will also offer greater safety on site through improved planning and eliminates re-work, which saves time and reduces costs.

Architect Aedas has also adopted BIM and it’s firmly bedded into their team approach. “With BIM, we are able to collaborate with structural and M&E engineers to produce a ‘virtual building’ which helps us manage risk and environmental performance, “ said Imran Kassim, associate director Aedas Architects. “Projects such as Holden Lane High School have a higher degree of coordination through the use of BIM software, resulting in significant savings in cost, materials and waste.”

Using this integrated approach toward building construction, Balfour Beatty is using BIM processes on all major new projects to strengthen communication and team transparency. This approach is aligned with the Government’s Construction Strategy and the industry mandate that will require fully collaborative BIM level 2, as a minimum, by 2016.

With the building set for completion in January 2014, the use of BIM demonstrates Balfour Beatty’s continued commitment to delivering sustainable projects in terms of efficient delivery and low environmental impact.

UK’s Biggest Healthcare Project To Be Built Off Site Is Craned Into Position Off-site construction specialist, Yorkon, part of the Portakabin Group, has installed the UK’s largest and most complex modular building project to be built in the health sector. The £17.9m contract for principal contractor Kier Construction is for a new Women and Children’s Centre at North Middlesex University Hospital.

Due to be handed over later this year, the project which was procured under the ProCure21+ framework, was manufactured off site at the Yorkon production centre in York.

152 steel-framed modules up to 18m long and weighing up to 18.5 tonnes were craned into position in just 28 days. A 500 tonne crane was used for this operation which took place within the hospital grounds and in close proximity to existing facilities that remained in use throughout. The units were installed partially completed with window frames, first fix electrics, HVAC ducting, plumbing, and a high performance concrete floor.

The off-site approach has radically reduced disruption to patient care and the build programme to ensure the new facilities will be operational in line with the Trust’s clinical strategy and prior to seasonal winter pressures.

The centre will accommodate the increase in maternity patients and around 2,000 additional births in North Middlesex.

It forms part of a major reorganisation of hospital services in the boroughs of Barnet, Enfield and Haringey. The architects and project managers are AHP Architects & Surveyors.

Kevin Howell, Director of Environment and Joint Project Director for the Barnet & Chase Farm and North Middlesex Hospitals, said, “Given the extremely challenging timescales for this project, we needed to look at more innovative methods of procurement and construction. Off-site construction is giving us greater certainty and a substantial reduction in risk.”

The scheme will provide a consultant-led delivery unit with additional high dependency beds, two new obstetrics theatres, a neonatal unit, triage centre, women’s outpatient department, and a midwife-led birthing unit with four birthing pool rooms. A roof top plant room is located on the second floor.

The external appearance of the new building will reflect the design of the adjacent facilities and will feature rendered façades, ribbon glazing around the perimeter of the first floor, a large atrium entrance spanning two storeys with light wells providing further natural daylight inside. There is also full height glazing to the stair towers on each of the two wings and large projecting window bays provide a visual contrast to the rendered finish across the building envelope.

The scheme is targeted to achieve a BREEAM ‘excellent’ rating and has a number of sustainability features including a biodiverse green roof with a variety of meadow flowers to part of the first floor, photovoltaic panels above the plant room, and an energy-efficient combined heat and power system.

Britain's first zero-cost energy park at Armstrong Point in Wigan has received further industry recognition with two awards at the North West Regional Construction Awards 2013.

Submitted by building contractors Tolent Construction and partners Kingspan Renewables, the £2.7 million project from developer Armstrong Properties won the Sustainability Award and the Regional Project of the Year for Lancashire. The 2,095 square metre development comprises nine industrial units served by fourteen different energy-efficient technologies that mean tenants do not have to pay any energy costs. Rockfon Ceilings Provide Colourful And Acoustic Solutions To New Heartlands Academy Students and staff at Heartlands Academy, Birmingham, have a brand new £20 million state-of-the-art school building; which is part of the Birmingham ‘Building Schools for the future’ programme.

The baffles were hung from the ceiling as the walls were being used for display purposes and provided enhanced sound absorption to the double height space.

Sound control was a must for the music classrooms. Rockfon Sonar B tiles meet the highest sound regulations and were installed to help control reverberation and prevent unwanted sound transference to adjacent rooms. The Sonar tiles were directly fixed to the existing ceiling making them very quick and easy to install. They also offer a unique combination of highest fire safety (Class A1) and Class A sound absorption.

Scholar ceiling tiles were installed throughout the circulation areas at the Academy. The visible side of these robust tiles have a micro-textured white reinforced fleece which provides good impact resistance and its durable edges remain intact even when removed and reinstalled regularly. Scholar complies with BB93 Acoustics for Schools to create appropriate reverberation times for classrooms and learning spaces.

To meet the high sanitation standards required in the kitchen areas Rockfon Hygienic tiles were chosen. Hygienic tiles were specifically developed to meet the exacting standards of hygienic areas and feature a specially painted white surface which incorporates a fungicide to repel water and dirt. The durable surface can also withstand essential cleaning pressure washing.

Chetham’s School Of Music: Waterproofing Strategy Chetham’s School of Music is the largest music school in the UK. RIW provided a waterproofing strategy robust enough for their new-build Grade 3 basement project. It was essential that the construction programme on such a large project was kept to time, so careful consideration was given to the application process of any proposed waterproofing solution.

Price & Myers, the engineers responsible for the specification of waterproofing on the project, were also conscious that when applying a Type A system externally, a methodical application and attention to detail were critical. The initial concept involved using a Type A bentonite tanking system applied externally. However, it was soon established that this approach would be time consuming, mainly due to complex detailing and the level of attention needed during application.

The waterproofing strategy was revisited and it was agreed that a drained cavity solution would be more appropriate. RIW Cavity Drain was chosen, as this would both meet the requirements of a Grade 3 basement and allow the groundwork’s concrete frame to be constructed quickly, without the need for a stop-start process.

Once the mainframe was constructed, the basement waterproofing was installed. The application was quickly completed, and the robustness of the product allowed subsequent trades to work in and around the application, without risk of damage to the membrane.

The mainstay of the application took place during winter; RIW Cavity Drain’s temperature tolerance meant that there were no delays in installation due to cold weather. You Have Tried Door Curtains .. Now Try The New Privacy Door Sleeve Having been approached by the Connaught Hotel to help with developing a product for their more discerning guests, the privacy door sleeve was born. The hotel was looking for a solution whereby they could cover up certain glass doors within the hotel giving guest privacy yet enabling the doors to still to be opened should they be required.

The product had to be developed in a way that it did not damage the doors in anyway and could simply be put on and taken off as and when required.

The privacy door sleeve having fabric on both sides of the door simply slides on giving total privacy. The product is designed and finished in a way that makes it makes it ideal for clients such as the Connaught Hotel who having recently purchased three pairs of the product.

Soos Interiors are an interior design company working with some of the most famous hotels throughout the world. SooS Interiors was formed in 2012 by Susan Leadbitter specialising in soft furnishing for the hotel industry. Clients include The Maybourne Group as well as a number of other five star hotels.
