WWW.SPATIALDESIGNARCHITECTS.COM Title: Spatial Architects Design Unique Solution Architect: Spatial Design Architects

This extension is the unique solution conceived by Spatial Design Architects when they were commissioned by a private client for a large extension, loft conversion and complete refurbishment of a four storey house in Brentwood Essex. The client wished for a contrast in appearance and architecture with the traditional brick facade and particularly wanted to use the old basement to connect with the garden. This brief set the challenge because it was impossible to access within the existing building and the staircase has to be located outside. The solution is the glass box on the extension roof which not only allows access from the ground floor to the basement extension but creates a unique focal point. The overall result is a fantastic space created for everyday cooking, eating and relaxing whilst having full enjoyment of the garden.

ISSUE 3 2016

Project architect Brendon Robins says, “The detailing of the extension made this project in spite of many planning conditions placed on its approval and design. We feel that we found innovative ways to overcome all these while delivering the space required. ‘Wow, it was definitely worth it!’ is how our client summed up this project.” Spatial Design Architects is well-known for their strong focus on the design and delivery of unique homes, business extensions and commercial buildings, particularly in the southeast. Specialising in quality contemporary, sustainable and hybrid architecture, within the urban or countryside environment, their vision is to design form and function and to blur the divide between the internal and external spaces which individual home-owners, families, businesses and communities can enjoy, relax and work within.

ISG has commenced a £15 million project for Aberdeen Asset Management to carry out the refurbishment and extension of a landmark commercial office building that is one of the tallest structures in Bristol. The multi-phased scheme at One Redcliff Street, in the heart of the city’s central business district, sees ISG comprehensively modernise and upgrade the entire 14-storey 1960s building, while existing tenants remain in occupation. Net lettable space will be increased by over 10 percent to 95,800 sq ft with the construction of a new floor at roof level to create a suite of high-specification meetings rooms. ISG has now commenced the strip out of vacant floors, remodelling the main reception area and replacing the building’s lifts. Mechanical and electrical services will be stripped out and upgraded with modern and highlyefficient infrastructure, whilst ISG maintains service continuity to existing tenants in the building. At roof level, the floor will be strengthened and new steelwork installed to enable the construction of the additional floor, which will be stepped back from the existing façade. The project programme has been carefully developed to enable phased occupation of individual floors, with tenants temporarily relocating to completed levels so that ISG can systematically complete the refurbishment of the entire building. The contractor is working closely with occupants to minimise the project’s impact, maintaining regular communication on key programme phases, adopting out of hours working and robust monitoring. Graeme White, ISG’s divisional director, commented: “The regional office market is continuing to grow in confidence, with significant inward investment and a focus on attracting major domestic and international organisations. There are significant opportunities in these key conurbations and a growing demand for our fit out expertise, as recent wins for KPMG in Leeds and Manchester demonstrate, so we are delighted to be adding to our portfolio of projects for Aberdeen Asset Management in Bristol.”

The SCOOP chair is all about comfort. It is generously proportioned with a seat that has a scooped shape, designed to hold the sitter in an enclosed space. The fluid form is achieved by applying upholstery to an injection-moulded hard foam shell. Solid wood, copper plated steel or brass coated legs create a stable support. The WINGBACK chair takes inspiration from a quintessential, British classic design, which has been re-mastered for modern times. Made in Europe and inspired by two seating archetypes, the Wingback chair has been refined for the grandest banquets or as a chair for contemplation by the fireplace. This series is available in natural oak, black or copper legs. Under the creative direction of Tom Dixon, Design Research Studio (DRS) has created the interiors for ALTO, a new contemporary grill in Hong Kong. ALTO is Design Research Studio’s first restaurant project in Asian territory. DRS has called upon the practice of alchemy and the four classical elements of earth, air, fire and water to create dramatic and striking interiors that bare the darker side of nature. Inspired by ALTO’S concept of a contemporary grill with reinterpreted classics, each furnishing and fixture has been carefully selected for its association with the natural elements or the transformation of the ordinary into the extraordinary. Tom Dixon used a monochrome backdrop to frame ALTO’s expansive views and the interior’s raw textures. The restaurant’s expansive canopy of 230 gold mini Melt lights - the biggest installation of its kind in the world - sits over the main restaurant space and creates a warm glow that distorts, reflects and sets the glamourous tone of the dining experience. Blackened timber table tops and benches resonate fire, as does the molten metal of the restaurant’s brass fittings and fixtures. Extensive use of green marble and terrazzo stone throughout the restaurant embody earth and ALTO’s mountainous geographical location. Tom Dixon collections featured at ALTO include: MELT: radical design collective FRONT. The light bouncing and reflecting around the uneven surfaces creates a dramatic, melting hot, blown glass effect. MELT is translucent when on and mirror finish when off. Its internal luminosity is visible in full daylight. At night, it emits an attractive, mildly hallucinogenic light, akin to recent Hubble Telescope images of the cosmos. FADE: A cluster of gold Fade pendants sit over the dining booths, the fading metallised surfaces referencing heat and smoke rising from the kitchen. CURVE: The VIP room focuses on air and oxidation, the ethereal Curve pendants and wall lights are chosen for their soft silver finish and perforated surface.

The FORM tea set calls to a forgotten era and is the sophisticated way to serve British afternoon tea. A six-piece set all formed in solid brass includes tea pot, jug, tea caddy, milk jug, sugar dish and spoon and stamped tray all available individually. SCENT Elements candle collection is Tom Dixon’s second olfactory adventure and is a celebration of the bare essentials. All four scents are created in a bid to de-mystify the obscure complexities of the most misunderstood of the senses smell. The minimalist attitude has delivered four scents of extreme simplicity and individual character that reflect their elemental names of Fire, Air, Earth and Water. Brainwashing, Destruction Testing And Nano Technology: After 12 Years, A Newly Refined TSL By Jens Van Eyseren of Roto: Roto have just rolled out a new version of their TSL. Amazingly, it is now 12 years since the original came along and revolutionised security for Open-Out windows with its Twin-Cam Security locking. The public at large might not really have been aware of it, but it certainly made life a lot easier for the fabricators who were smart enough to adopt it from the start. The marketing at the time used the word “revolutionary” – and for once it wasn’t hype. This new locking system, which could be fitted to a window as quickly and easily as an espagnolette, really did provide shootbolt levels of security. Brainwashed - And that’s what Roto were up against at the time: shootbolts. It seemed like every window sales rep in the country had been brainwashed to tell members of the public that their window would only be any good if it was fitted with shootbolts. There was some reasoning behind this. When the BS 7950 standard (equivalent to EN Resistance Class 2) was introduced in the UK, standard espagnolettes with two or three locking points simply weren’t strong enough to withstand the mechanical loadings in the test. Three burly men - We’re talking about forces of 3 kN trying to push the window open. That’s like angling the window face down and having the weight of three burly men standing on it. No wonder some of those very old basic espags just gave way under that load. It would have been easier for Roto to carry on selling their shootbolt system. But they decided to take a bit of a calculated risk and put out something that was both familiar (you fit it just like you do an espag) and yet utterly new at the same time. When Roto launched the TSL, I was involved on the technical side. We invited fabricators to make a window and bring it along to be tested, so they could witness for themselves what this new product was capable of doing. A lot of people really did have to see it to believe it. Once they saw, they believed. Done up with a zip - I tend to think of it like this: a window with a basic espag is like a piece of clothing fastened with buttons. By contrast, when you lock a window with TSL, it’s more like you’ve done it up with a zip fastener: it’s an awful lot harder to prise it apart. On the larger sizes there are 8 cams which, when you think about it, is a good number of locking points on the side of a window. But what really provides the advantage is that Twin-Cam action: each pair of cams closing together into a common striker creates a very strong locking point. We saw it in the tests. Windows would breeze through the standard 3 kN loadings, even though we were loading each locking point three times – with the additional 1 kN being applied in three different directions. Tested to destruction - After a dozen such loadings, most people wanted us to ramp it up and see how well their window could withstand being tested to destruction. We pushed the rig to the limit. It’s fair to say most windows

12

ISSUE 4 2016

could not be broken open, even with loadings way beyond those defined in the standard. Sometimes we would succeed in ripping out the locking point in the top or bottom corner if we concentrated on it. All of this was done using hydraulic equipment to impart forces way beyond what anyone would be able to apply with a crowbar. So simple, it’s obvious - It’s one of those ideas that is so simple, it seems obvious when you’re used to seeing it. But that’s the beauty of so many great inventions: their apparently simplicity. Roto have come up with other revolutionary products of course – after all, they introduced the first Tilt&Turn system. Now, for Open-Out, there is the TSH 30, which can provide enhanced security on three sides of the sash of a larger window. 12 years on, still the most effective - But when it comes to a regular side-hung or top-hung casement of the type fitted in many homes, the most straightforward and reliable way to give it enhanced security status is to fit it with a TSL. 12 years on, it remains the most straightforward and effective solution. It’s just a shame so many new build properties are STILL being constructed and fitted with basic espags. If only the customers knew how easily – and at very low cost – their windows could have been made so much more resistant to intruders. No point trying to reinvent the wheel - You might be asking, “What’s new about this latest TSL?” There’s no point trying to reinvent the wheel, but you can improve the way it is put together using the best materials and technology available at the time. That’s what Roto have opted to do. The new TSL faceplate now comes into line with that of the Roto NT and other modular hardware systems in the manufacturer’s range. As well as being designed for maximum stability, the new faceplates have a ‘premium’ look and feel to them. Nano technology - The faceplate is now coated with RotoSil Nano 7. This latest formulation uses nano technology to make the surface ‘self-healing’. It is therefore more resistant to scratches as well as corrosion. As a fabricator, you get the same advantages: a range of sizes to suit sash rebates from 305mm up to 1600mm; two different cam heights and backsets depending on profile; fine adjustment in the cams to ensure a firm weather seal; a range of profile-related strikers. The TSL range is designed to give you maximum flexibility with the lowest possible number of different components. Are there still people who think you have to have a shootbolt? Probably. If you’ve not used TSL before, it’s still not too late to catch on – because there are many years of life left in this little stalwart yet. http://www.tsl-by-roto.eu/ ENQUIRY 12

Opinion

www.bradite.com Article By: Bradite Title: Specifying Commercial Cladding Refurbishment Author: James Burton, Sales Manager

James Burton, Sales Manager at specialist coating manufacturer Bradite, advises what to consider when refurbishing commercial and industrial cladding. Cladding - the profiled exterior and predominately metal finish to industrial and commercial buildings, is mostly coated in the production process which gives it a life of approximately 20 years before it starts to discolour. Both flexible and adaptable, it can be over-painted at any point during its lifetime, the process normally being relatively quick with minimal disruption. Suitable Surfaces Most of the commonly encountered external cladding on buildings can be treated with Cladit. Steel and non-ferrous metals must be properly prepared and primed while wood, fibreglass, concrete and mineral substrates should be free of contamination, dust and efflorescence. Suitable existing epoxy and polyurethane coatings should be cleaned and abraded as necessary. Most external cladding will last for a period of between 10 and 20 years before any maintenance is needed. The deterioration is usually gradual and will move from simple chalking or colour fading, to failure of the coating. This is followed by corrosion of the protective zinc or aluminium alloy under the decorative coating and finally by failure of the steel substrate itself. When the steel substrate itself has failed, it is usually by perforation or excessive steel thinning by corrosion. This is when the cladding needs to be replaced. Up until the corrosion and failure of the steel substrate itself, Bradite’s Cladit can be successfully used to upgrade the cladding and extend its life by up to 10 years. High performance Cladit is a water thinned single polyurethane that’s easy to apply and can offer a 10- year maintenance cycle. Full BS 4800 and RAL Colours including Aluminium are available, while specific corporate colours can be achieved by using Bradite’s extensive colour mixing database and can match specific corporate colours. Atmospheric Exposure Conditions In an Industrial environment, corrosion is mainly caused by a high level of airborne sulphur dioxide or other pollution from industrial and domestic processes combined with high moisture levels. In a Marine environment, corrosion is mainly caused by a high level of salt, carried as salt spray and combined with high moisture levels. Salt spray can be carried up to 3 kilometres inland depending on the prevailing winds. Cladit has proven excellent performance in both of these exposure conditions. 14

ISSUE 4 2016

Specification It is essential to ascertain that current cladding coating still has good adhesion, before over coating. This can be checked by carrying out a cross hatch adhesion test on a sufficient number of elevations (differently exposed elevations may give different results). Where the adhesion is insufficient, the elevation should be completely stripped of old coating, and repainted. Preparation As in any decorating project, good preparation is the key to a successful finish. Bradite recommends high pressure water cleaning to remove all loose and flaking paint, salts and other contaminants. A detergent like Bradite TD39 should be used combined with scrubbing and high pressure water cleaning to remove any oil contamination not removed by high pressure cleaning alone. Rusted and damaged areas should be blast cleaned. An intact area of galvanised steel or aluminium substrate should be primed with Bradite WP45 All Metal Primer. Care must be taken to ensure that the minimum thickness given in the available data sheets is achieved on the edges of the cladding profile as well as the flat surfaces. It is advised that application by brush and roller may not achieve the required dry film thickness and may then require extra coats. Application of the surface coating should always be avoided under adverse weather conditions and in particular, low temperatures. Rain on the surface shortly after application can affect the final appearance. Application should also be avoided in areas exposed to direct sunlight as this may accelerate the drying and affect the application. Additional Preparation and Procedures The life of all protective systems can be prolonged by ensuring that the dry film thickness of the paint system on all welds, sharp edges, bolts, nuts and other fixings is at the correct level. This can be achieved by giving extra stripe coats of each coat to more sensitive areas. For improved performance, all welds and sharp edges should be mechanically ground to a radius of 2mm or more and all pittings filled by welding or with the use of a suitable filler.

Comar Makes Light Work Of Façade Work The University of Birmingham’s new Chamberlain Hall Student Accommodation is an impressive example of regeneration which is in keeping with the landscape as well as providing all essential capacity growth for the future. The façade had to provide function as well as form. Natural ventilation was a must, however, in keeping with the structured façade open-in windows were required fronted with ventilation panels, to allow ventilation yet not impact on the façades integrity, maintaining the clean lines and sleek elevations. Making the façade work and integrate with all the cladding elements involved Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems designing new methods of fixing. The flush façade was a must and all the elements: Comar Glazing, Mesh and Copper panels needed to integrate. One of the engineering challenges on the project was the connection of the perforated copper cladding panels to the Comar 6EFT curtain walling. The team designed a bespoke capping profile which was extruded with re-enforced walls capable of fixing the copper panels directly to it. A heavy duty pressure plate with a fixing port arrangement, was used to mechanically fix the capping to the pressure plate. Subsequent regular fixings then transmitted the applied loads back to the rear structural mullion member to ensure there was no thermal bridging. www.comar-alu.co.uk ENQUIRY 17

Notifier by Honeywell has announced the launch of a new continuing professional development (CPD) course 2016/2017. ‘Getting To Know BS 7273-4’ provides installers, integrators, contractors, consultants and end users with all the information on this important standard and how it relates to the way that doors are opened, closed and controlled by fire detection systems. The prompt evacuation of a burning building requires as few obstacles and obstructions as possible and, similarly, restricting the spread of fire and heat in such a situation relies upon the use of well-engineered fire doors that can be reliably closed in the event of a fire. Those attending will also gain an valuable understanding of the three categories of actuation – A (critical), B (standard) and C (indirect) – and the circumstances under which the control mechanisms should revert to their fail safe position to protect escape routes and prevent the spread of smoke in the event of a fire. Wrightstyle Hired, Not Fired Wrightstyle were definitely hired to supply advanced glazing systems for a high-end apartment complex in Camden Town, London which featured in the last series of TV’s The Apprentice. The company supplied internal screens and door systems to Avdon Bristol Limited, a glazing specialist, for the prestigious Carlow House development, a former Edwardian warehouse. In the TV programme, Lord Sugar’s apprentices were given the task of selling the new apartments, set within a refurbished 1930s art deco building – which were officially opened by Sir Alan earlier this year. The imposing building has been transformed by Galliard Homes into a range of 85 one and two bedroom apartments. The Wrightstyle contract was for unlatched thermal and acoustic doors in 17 different configurations, and for glass-to-glass jointed screens in the main lobby area. The main lobby sits under a four-storey atrium which is designed to be a multi-faceted chandelier, illuminating each apartment with natural light. “Advanced glazing systems are increasingly being installed in residential buildings, not simply to protect against fire, but to provide acoustic or thermal performance,” said Lee Coates, Wrightstyle’s technical director. “With residential specifications becoming increasingly stringent, the glazed components now have to deliver against a range of advanced characteristics, and our systems ranges have been designed to do just that,” he said. www.wrightstyle.co.uk ENQUIRY 24

The Future Trends In Housing Identified By Reynaers At Home Architect Survey Industry professionals have shared their predictions for the future of residential architecture in a national survey from Reynaers at Home. The majority of respondents said that sustainability was high on the agenda for the houses of tomorrow. Looking at the current industry, architects agreed that energy efficiency is still a critical consideration when designing a project, with 48% of respondents citing it as the most popular trend. When asked “What does the future hold for housing design?” almost half said more affordable homes for the younger population. More than one in 10 also said that tech-based solutions for smaller spaces will be a prominent future trend. Architects predicted that there will be more properties built to meet energy demands and budgets for all ages, with a focus on flexibility and functionality supported by innovative design and quality. Maximising space and light were mentioned as key trends for the future, as well as amenities and space planning, cost-effective repetitive grid facades and floating corners with bifold or sliding doors below. Compared with Reynaers at Home’s 2013 survey, there was a 12% collective increase in popularity for panoramic window walls, bifold doors and floating ceiling corners. Rebecca Cope, Marketing Manager at Reynaers, said: “It’s fantastic to see that as an industry we are looking towards the future. Architects care about the people using their buildings, as well as the world around them. “Architecture is about creating something that provides an excellent functional space for those who live there, and one that will stand the test of time. This sits in line with Reynaers at Home’s key values, as our product range of aluminium doors and windows boasts fantastic sustainability credentials. “Reynaers’ products can contribute to the overall sustainability level of the building, thus achieving points for building certificates such as LEED and BREEAM. These certify that a building is designed and built to surpass national standards for a range of factors including energy savings, CO2 emission reductions and sensitivity to their impact. “ www.reynaersathome.co.uk ENQUIRY 25

Crittall Helps Liverpool Landmark Hotel Liverpool dockside’s newest luxury hotel has brought 21st century chic to a traditional Victorian maritime setting and Crittall Windows make an important contribution to this impressive transformation. The Titanic Hotel is part of the redevelopment of the historic Stanley Dock complex of warehouses. It is located in what was originally known as the North Warehouse, built between 1846 and 1854. The building was badly damaged during a World War Two bombing raid and lay derelict for many years. Nevertheless, the value of the site in historic and architectural terms was recognised when the Liverpool Docks became a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the old North Warehouse, along with other buildings, was listed Grade II. Fast forward to 2010 when Stanley Dock Properties Ltd engaged Dublin-based Darmody Architects to draw up a masterplan for the entire site. Working closely with Liverpool City Council planners the architects conceived an ambitious regeneration plan, phase I of which was the transformation of the old North Warehouse into the

153-bedroom hotel with the adjacent Rum Warehouse – a building of 1950s vintage – converted into an exhibition space. Darmody’s conversion has retained many of the original brick and iron features in the spacious North Warehouse so as to reflect the buildings, and the overall sites, industrial maritime heritage. This is where the specification of Crittall’s Corporate W20 windows designed to fill existing bowed-top openings, fitted the bill precisely. The £36million 4-star Titanic Hotel project has maximised the warehouse’s generous dimensions. Bedrooms measure 55 square metres on average, around twice the size of a standard hotel room, earning the building, in the words of one reviewer, its description as ‘a boutique hotel of Titanic proportions.’ The theme is also emphasised by the fact that, on entering the hotel, visitors can ascend a faithful replica of the ill-fated RMS Titanic’s grand staircase. Through their attractive Crittall windows, with their slim profile maximising the natural daylight entering the rooms, guests are also treated to magnificent views across Stanley Dock to the Tobacco Warehouse opposite and on to the Mersey Estuary. The hotel has definitely become an important component of one of Liverpool’s most impressive must-visit destinations. www.crittall-windows.co.uk ENQUIRY 28

New Law Helps Self-Builders Get The View They’ve Always Dreamed Of AGB is urging self-builders to declare their intention to local authorities, as a new law forces councils to help them find suitable land for planning permission. The hardware manufacturer is already seeing real interest from the self-build market in its Imago Lift & Slide system and believes that the recent changes to the law will lead to further growth as ambitious self-builders seize the opportunity to create their dream home. Under the Housing & Planning Act 2016, which came into law in July, local authorities have a duty to meet demand for self-build and custom house building by providing planning permission for appropriate plots of land. “With the Housing & Planning Act now in effect, there’s never been more support from the Government to make a start and find that dream view,” says Marco Zen, UK and Ireland Sales Manager for AGB Hardware. “The level of demand is assessed based on a register that local councils must keep of interest from local self-builders. Anybody thinking of building their own home should tell their local authority and get onto that register. The greater the interest locally, the more help and choice they’ll receive from the council to find their ideal plot of land.” AGB makes Imago Lift & Slide, the leading hardware for timber lift and slide doors – a popular choice for self-builders for its slimline aesthetics and its ability to create large glazing areas that frame the view. “Self-builders are an uncompromising audience who want to put a personal stamp on where they live and Imago is perfect for making the most of the view they’ve always dreamed of,” confirms Marco. www.chooseimago.co.uk ENQUIRY 29

Customers Turn To Alufolddirect For Aluminium Triangular And Gable Windows AluFoldDirect is seeing a significant trend towards aluminium windows, and a growing percentage are large or unusually shaped windows. Customers benefit from AluFoldDirect’s precise manufacturing and fast lead times. Triangular windows are an area where AluFoldDirect can make a difference. “These are hyper-modern and a real alternative to leaded lights, but require a detailed level of hand-made craftsmanship because every window needs different angles,” explains Craig Miller, Managing Director at AluFoldDirect. “For each window, we have to work out the exact geometry and hand make the bracketing before we fabricate the window. In theory, it’s timeconsuming and fiddly, but by applying the same process we use across all of our windows we can do them quickly and do them well.” Gable windows are increasingly popular in aluminium, because the thin profile and choice of colours gives a slimline profile that maximises the glazing area. AluFoldDirect typically fabricates up to 3-4 metres wide and 10 metres tall. A choice of profile gives installers and builders even greater flexibility. In addition to its slim window profile, many people prefer the square cut curtain walling appearance. These frames go up from ground level to cover all the floors and then shape to a point on top, for example in the loft space. www.alufolddirect.co.uk ENQUIRY 30

Glazing Is Central In Iconic Art Deco Adelphi Building Refurb Designing and installing a new five storey atrium and roof light in keeping with its Grade II listed art deco surroundings was just one of the challenges met by GLASSOLUTIONS as part of ISG’s £30million refurbishment of the iconic Adelphi Building on London’s Victoria Embankment. The UK’s leading glass processing company worked closely with architects Aukett Swanke and the main contractors as part of the expert team rejuvenating one of London’s most important art deco structures. GLASSOLUTIONS and the architect had successfully teamed up previously on the refurbishment of 123 Victoria Street in London. ISG secured the contract with global investment firm Blackstone to remodel and refurbish floors one to six of the iconic building to create 190,000 sq ft of high spec CAT A open plan office accommodation. Effective project management was a key to the success of the scheme, given that the building remained partly occupied and in use throughout. The work involved significant structural alterations to upgrade and sensitively modernise the building, including the reinstatement of internal light wells to maximise the volume of natural light entering the structure at lower levels. The GLASSOLUTIONS team completed the complex £1million interior and exterior glazing project within just 20 weeks, using a range of glazing options within the Schueco window and curtain walling system. Bespoke engineered glass solutions, including challenging deflection tolerances were required to deliver the glazing specification within the listed building.

Externally, the building’s existing smoked glass windows have been replaced with high performance clear glass units featuring a range of glass including Planidur COOL-LITE SKN165, Security HST Toughened Planitherm Ultra N on outer panes of sealed units and Stadip Protect laminated on inner panes. Where fire rated glass was required GLASSOLUTIONS used a combination of Securit Planitherm Total+ and 25mm Contraflam 60 on inner panes. Within the atrium, and for the screens and doors at ground floor level, Stadip Silence clear toughened HST acoustic laminate was used to deliver Rw 41dB acoustic performance. Where the building steps in at level six, a new landscaped roof terrace area overlooking the reinstated glazed light wells has been created featuring glazed balustrading using GLASSOLUTIONS SGG security glazing with handrail. Says GLASSOLUTIONS’ business manager, Eamonn Tobin, “Complex projects like the scheme at The Adelphi Building require a combination of an appropriate product range, technical expertise, excellent team working and first class project management. At GLASSOLUTIONS we have again demonstrated that by providing this blend we are first choice for high profile projects across the UK.” www.glassolutions.co.uk ENQUIRY 34

Working In The Light Designed by DarntonB3 architects, this 23,000 sqm facility is the new HQ for Airedale International Air Conditioning in Leeds. The production facility is a stunning example of the way in which the Kalwall® translucent daylighting system has been used in combination with Kalwall panel unit windows. It includes a state-of-the-art test centre and training school regarded as a worldwide hub of excellence for air-conditioning. The dramatic linear simplicity of the design projects real impact on the entrance façade while the architects have configured the levels of the site so that the main mass is concealed from public view and all aspects of manufacturing are kept on a single level. Sustainability is also fundamental to Airedale’s core strategy which has been translated into a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’ for the building. Unlike conventional glazing, highly insulating Kalwall eliminates shadows and glare and the stark contrasts of light and shade. The system also enhances simplicity by eliminating the need for blinds, curtains or solar control. Even on cloudy days, the building is bathed with natural diffused daylight which means less artificial lighting and therefore reduced costs. Apart from being specified for all types of new build, Kalwall is increasingly used for the refurbishment of cladding or rooflights on aged buildings. www.structura-uk.com/kalwall ENQUIRY 35

Two-Phase Enhancement Programme For Schueco’s AWS Window Range Schueco UK is undertaking a two-phase development of its highly successful AWS outward-opening window range. The first phase sees the introduction of new profiles and fittings to increase the number of opening variations. Among the latter are new double outward-opening windows without a central fixed mullion but with continuous centre seals. With sizes up to 2000 mm wide x 2500 mm high for double and 1000 mm wide x 2500 mm high for single vent windows, the system offers exciting new fenestration opportunities. Schueco UK believes that these new AWS window options will prove ideal for balconies on large-scale, inner-city residential developments where their slim lines and elegant profiles will add style to any apartment. Equally importantly, their high level of engineering excellence will ensure that usability is matched by excellent thermal performance. The new Schueco AWS windows will also be invaluable for patios in exposed locations because they can deliver excellent weather-tightness when closed and allow completely unobstructed views when open. The latter characteristic will make them particularly attractive for owners whose homes enjoy dramatic scenic views. The completion of the second phase of development (scheduled for the middle of 2017) will see the introduction of top- and side-hung concealed hinges of a new and unique design specially developed for Schueco windows. www.schueco.co.uk ENQUIRY 36

Bespoke Solutions In Aluminium by Wojciech Brozyna - MD of Aluprof UK Why specify aluminium? Some of the reasons that spring to mind are ‘strength’, ‘durability’ and ‘recyclability’, it is the latter that makes the specification of aluminium a green choice for architects as aluminium is virtually 100% recyclable many times over. Today over 50% of all aluminium extruded comes from recycled content which uses just 5% of the original energy used to create the aluminium in the first place. So why don’t we just use more recycled aluminium, well, we just can’t get enough to meet demand! Since 1880, when aluminium became a commercial reality, 75% of all the aluminium produced is still in active service, I don’t think many other building materials can boast such credentials.

26

ISSUE 4 2016

Compared to other materials used in fenestration, aluminium profiles are cheaper and quicker to produce, they are also capable of providing intricate shapes for various requirements. These designs help the profiles to achieve not only incredible strengths without reverting to other materials, they can also offer high levels of weathering performance. When half-scales (the inside and outside aluminium profiles) are coupled with modern multi chamber polyamides and strategically located aerogel insulation profiles, insulation levels of the frame can meet the Passivhaus standard. Thermal insulation performance for openable windows can achieve a UW from 0.53 W/m2K and for a door,

a UD from 0,62 W/m2K. So aluminium systems are definitely not behind other materials when it comes to insulation. Recent studies in the industry suggest that coated or anodised aluminium systems can last the lifetime of a building, there are examples, such as the New Bodleian Library, now refurbished and known as the Weston Library. Here the original anodised aluminium windows on this building were installed in the 1930’s and when the facade was refurbished, were simply cleaned in-situ within the original facade. These windows have already provided an eighty-year productive life with at least the same life expectancy in the future.

Doors, Windows & Glazing

These attributes have helped aluminium become the specified material of choice for architects when it comes to fenestration systems but, it is the ‘bespoke’ nature of today’s facades that really inspires the use of aluminium in architecture. One of the most impressive food experiences in London can be found at Broadgate Circle near to Liverpool Street Station. The venue offers a diverse collection of restaurants, cafes, bars, street food traders and a gym. The construction makes extensive use of natural limestone with aluminium windows and doors supplied by Aluprof and expertly installed by Linder Facades. The result is a high quality development fit for the city. Completed in early 2015, all aluminium profiles and pressings have been naturally anodised in C34 Bronze, which complements the natural limestone whilst offering a sustainable and very resilient finish. Aluprof systems specified on the project included a bespoke version of the MB-SR50 curtain wall system with its distinctive rounded structural profile design, complete with a commercial entrance door system. The MB-86 which utilises a hidden leaf assembly which offers contemporary clean lines when used in the MB-SR50N curtain wall system but still utilises heavy duty hardware with high security locking options. The bespoke element of the MB-SR50N curtain wall system is a specially designed external capping which offers a raised square feature and recess. The result offers a distinctive visual appearance of the framing system whist the main design of the system remains unchanged. It is here that the main issue of bespoke solutions work so well. Aluminium can easily be extruded in special shapes within a few weeks of final designs being approved, if the profiles are cosmetic or consist of typical details, there is no need to retest the system as the ‘performance’ of the system is not affected. Concept drawings for new extrusions can be completed between systems company and architect, then once agreed, die drawings can be produced, from this stage it can be matter of six to eight weeks for the extrusion die to be made and extrusion to be readily available. These lead times are well within a new-build or refurbishment programme and open up possibilities for bespoke shapes of mullions, transoms and curtain wall cappings. The other areas of bespoke design, could be edge detailing to an existing or a new facade material, detailing to accommodate a special glazing detail, or special profiles which will allow CNC work to provide a unique visual appearance. The only limit to bespoke design is the specifiers imagination. Aluprof systems are increasingly being specified on a wide range of residential and commercial projects across the UK. Systems are designed, fabricated and installed by selected, specially trained companies to ensure each fabricated product meets the Aluprof exacting standards. Further information is available on the company website at www.aluprof.eu and specialist advice is available directly from Aluprof UK offices on 0161 941 4005. Part of a complete redevelopment project with an extension, a feature of the private residence is the creation of a beautiful balustrade to the rear of the property, perfect for relaxing and simply enjoying the stunning scenery.

Fifty per cent faster to install than traditional alternatives, TAPER-LOC® is a dry glaze system with no need for cement, suitable for laminated toughened glass from 12 to 21.52mm thick. Tested to meet the strictest building code requirements such as BS6180:2011, CEBTP and AbZ, the system uses a horizontal design, which allows it to be adjusted, dismantled and re-set. The base shoe can be surface or side-mounted, and provided drilled or undrilled. It is available in 3m lengths and made from aluminium.

“Uninterrupted views of the sea on a secure balustrade were the ultimate aim of this project”, explain 100% Stainless Manager James Lethbridge. “However, the installation needed to fulfil a number of other practical requirements. Ultimately, the customer wanted a secure balustrade that would not obscure their view, but be strong enough to withstand the wind rolling in from the sea and create shelter from the wind.” The solution was to use the innovative TAPER-LOC® System from CRL, the leading supplier to the glazing, railing, architectural and construction sectors. “To provide our client with the ideal solution we used a 15mm top mount heavy duty base shoe, with TAPER-LOC® tapers, and a 48mm diameter slotted stainless steel handrail which sits on top of the 15mm

Decorative Casing Solutions – Undercover Work If it wasn’t for column casings and interior wall lining solutions, building interiors would be considerably less attractive environments. Very few people stand back to admire a laminated plywood column casing at a school or brushed stainless steel wall lining in a prestige office building, yet they are key elements of the interior design. The demand for wider choice and increased aesthetics from architects, interior designers and specifiers have been key influences on Peterborough based casing and interior wall lining company, Encasement, whose range has continually expanded and diversified during the past ten years to become the most comprehensive available in the UK. Encasement is perhaps best known for its extensive range of decorative column casings, which are used to conceal structural steelwork. In addition to its ‘Circa’ and ‘Quadra’ ranges, which are manufactured from pre-formed plywood, the range also includes glass reinforced gypsum (GRG) and specialised fire resistant solutions for use with mezzanine floors. Designed solely for interior decorative applications, ‘Circa’ and ‘Quadra’ casings are used in an extremely diverse range of projects, which underlines their versatility, ease of specification and the immense range of decorative finishes available to complement or contrast with a building’s interior design scheme. Circa and Quadra are used in almost every building type from education, retail, hotel, sports and leisure, as well as the health sector and commercial office buildings. As a result the choice of sizes available is also wide, allowing specifiers to choose not only circular and square, but also extended circles and rectangular profiles. The casings are usually specified with a decorative laminate finish, which not only resists damage, scuffs and scratches, but also provides the specifier with a diverse palette of finishes from plain colours, wood grain and metallic, as well as textured and real wood veneers. In addition, as Encasement is the UK’s only supplier and manufacturer of pre-formed plywood casing solutions that holds a ‘Chain of Custody Certification’ from the Forest Stewardship Council, both ‘Circa’ and ‘Quadra’ are manufactured from FSC® materials making them compliant with sustainability codes and environmental procurement policies. Recent Quadra

projects include Farnborough’s 6th Form Centre and the Dame Kelly Holmes Sports Centre, while among the many Circa installations, Gatwick Airport’s South Terminal, Liverpool University and Gateshead International Stadium are major installations. Alongside the plywood casings, the company’s ‘Forma’ metal casings and ‘Polyma’ GRP range can be used for interior and exterior applications due to their inherent weather resistance. ‘Forma’ also provides specifiers with a wide scope of options and can be specified with diameters from 250mm up to 1000mm or as square, rectangular or even hexagonal forms. Projects, such as Winchester College, Birmingham Dental Hospital, University College London, the extensive Debenhams development at Cheshire Oaks and the restaurant area of London’s Mondrian Hotel perfectly illustrate the versatility of ‘Forma’ casings. Alongside the company’s six individual ranges of column casings, its ‘Vecta’ system provides a high quality solution for interior wall linings, bulkheads and reveals. The system is widely used in retail, education and commercial buildings, such as Tesco, South Bank University and Prêt a Manger, as well as prestigious office developments, including Wellington House and the Carmine building in Paddington, London. Encasement’s Managing Director, Martin Taylor, commented: Column casing provide a perfect mix of practicality and aesthetics and we’ve taken a lot of care to ensure our range meets both of these key criteria while ensuring that we always remain competitive and deliver high quality.” He added: “Our entire range is configured to provide the widest possible choice, which allows specifiers to source a range of specialised casing solutions from a single company with high levels of expertise and experience in this sector. We also have our own contracting arm, which enables us to offer a full supply and install service to support contractors.” Encasement’s latest ‘column casing solutions’ e-brochure together with further product and company information can be obtained from www.encasement.co.uk or by calling 01733 266889. So Much More Than Worktop Makeovers In a recent home improvement project, Granite Transformations has showcased examples of its extended range of makeover materials, services and fittings for the kitchen and bathroom, whilst displaying the current trend toward white and off-white decorative surfaces. The kitchen of this detached rural Lancashire home, a 1980’s new-build, now features stylishly refaced worktops, high gloss replacement cabinet doors, sparkling glass mosaic splashbacks, high performance hard flooring and modern appliances and fittings, in place of the previously dark and dated look. Upstairs in the bathroom, the elegant makeover theme is repeated with seamless, waterproof wall cladding, designer mosaic inserts, large nonporous floor tiles, metallic his’n’her basins, textured oak vanity furniture, large shower unit, modern bath and sanitaryware, refacing and replacing much more traditional décor. “People associate Granite Transformations with affordable kitchen worktop makeovers, but we’re so much more than that,” says General Manager, Hayley Fenn. “We now extend our hallmark value for money, top quality and expert fitting across virtually every surface and fixture in the kitchen or bathroom, including branded appliances, brassware and furniture from our selected approved suppliers.” This broad brush approach is reflected in the featured kitchen makeover, where natural light from one gable-end window and a rooflight is maximised by Perla Bianca quartz worktops with integrated mirror fleck, tough, easyclean Royal Ivory 1200x600mm floor tiles and elegant designer mosaic Metropolis Opal feature splashbacks. The original pine laminate cabinet doors have been replaced with High Gloss Champagne fittings and the adjoining dining area cabinets faced with Ultragloss Noce Marino timbergrain, all to maximise available natural and artificial light. The effect is bright, airy and spacious, illustrating a strong interior design trend toward white and offwhite decorative finishes.

By coordinating the arrival of all fixtures on site, including lengthy prefabricated worktops and made-to-measure cabinet doors, and providing their own expert fitters, electricians and plumbers, Granite Transformations provides a truly all-in-one solution. This is repeated in the bathroom, where in this instance Roca bath furniture, sanitaryware, taps, shower fittings and accessories form integral parts of the complete Granite Transformations makeover. The seamless and fully waterresistant backdrop to these elegant fixtures and fittings is provided by Hydra White recycled glass agglomerate, one of the brand’s top-selling surfaces. Its outstanding technical properties, grout-free finish and generous 3m long slab size make Granite Transformations’ tough decorative surface perfect for bath panels, shower liners and coordinated floor tiles. Noise Free Housing For Happy Living Good acoustics, like high quality thermal insulation, is one of the most important considerations for house builders and architects. This is because of high density living and, in particular, the popularity of sold floors. For example, one of the latest trends are polished concrete floors in variety of different colours. The problem is further exacerbated by the desire for large areas of glass and the absence of soft furnishings, such as curtains and carpets. The result of all this is that absorption of sound is difficult and reverberated sound can create an unpleasant environment. One increasingly popular solution is to line the ceilings with cost effective and high performance Troldtekt acoustic panels. Widely used throughout Europe, the panels instantly create an attractive surface, pleasant acoustics and a feeling of wellbeing throughout the house. Apart from a calm and cohesive surface, the ceiling offers a flexible choice of design, including different colours, surface structures, edge profiles and suspension systems. In addition it is possible to integrate surface mounted or concealed light fittings as well as sound speakers. The Troldtekt speaker is an acoustic panel with a specially developed flat unit, built in and concealed on the back of the panel. The sound waves pass through the panel and are distributed evenly throughout the room, covering a larger area than a traditional speaker. Mapei Products Specified For Tiling Renovation At Freemasons’ Hall Mapei adhesive and grout products have been specified for the installation of a stone pattern in the reception and washroom areas in a refurbishment to the Freemasons’ Hall, London. The Hall first opened in 1933 as a memorial to the 3,255 Freemasons who died during active service in the First World War, and has been used for events, the meeting place for the Grand Lodge, and annual meetings of the home counties since. Avantgarde Tiling was awarded the contract to design, supply and install a new stone pattern to the reception floor area and to install large format porcelain tiles and feature walls (including stone vanity and credenza tops) to the washroom area. Mapei products were specified to complete the tiling projects, and included the popular Limestone Ultracolor Plus grout (shade reference 299) which was applied to 70m2 of tiling within the reception area of the building. Kerapoxy white was applied to 94m2 of washroom tiles, ensuring that a stain resistant approach was installed in areas subject to heavy traffic. The Grade II* listed building is reputed to be one of the finest Art Deco buildings in England and as such due to its popularity was in constant use throughout the renovation work. The reception area was completed over two weekends of work, first requiring a quick setting screed for the installation of substrate. Mapei’s Ultraplan Renovation Screed 3240 was specified for its quick setting properties, allowing Avantgarde Tiling Ltd., to install a temporary carpet over the substrate so that the venue could be used without any constraints. The following weekend, the installation of the new stone floor was carried out entirely using Mapei’s Ecoprim T Primer, Adesilex P10 Adhesive for mosaics, Elastorapid Grey A; a quick setting adhesive for ceramic tiles and stone material and Keraflex Grey Maxi for the large format wall tiles. These Mapei products were used due to their suitability for the listed interior of the building. Brimstone Thermally Modified Timber – Delivering Accountability Wood has always represented the epitome of sustainability within construction, however, it has fallen behind competing building materials in recent decades with regards to its specifiability. This is changing as the timber industry develops products that offer the necessary technical detail to make them easily specifiable, making them better understood and appreciated by architects. Architects and other specifiers require increasing levels of liability and reliability in the products they specify, which has not always been achievable with natural timber. While they want to use timber, they need to know exactly how it is going to behave. Competing cladding systems such as concrete, metal and plastic have historically been easier to specify because the products are extruded and therefore more consistent and reliable, and the industries that produce them have been better at detailing their products. This makes the architect’s job that much easier. Understanding this reality has been a key driver in the development of the Brimstone range of thermally modified wood - the first commercially available thermally modified British timber. At Vastern Timber we recognised there was a growing need for wood products to be more technical, measurable, and ultimately reliable.

Thermally modification is already a proven technology, and thermally modified timber products are 60 – 80% more stable than non-modified timbers, delivering significantly less expansion and contraction when faced with changes in ambient temperature and humidity, and making thermally modified timber a superior solution for exterior uses such as cladding. Thermally modified hardwood products typically reach the equivalent of Class 2 (EM350) and in some cases Class 1, giving a minimum service life of between 30 – 50 years. This is the kind of performance and reliability that is needed by architects. When you create engineered or modified wood products that are more technical in nature, you create something that has a greater level of reliability and accountability. With regards sustainability, timber is hard, if not impossible to match. And yet ‘sustainable’ is a concept that needs constant close scrutiny as there are different levels of sustainability, and different processes that have an impact on a product’s green credentials. Local sourcing versus imported products is an obvious example. There is far greater social value and inherent sustainability in a timber product that has been sourced from well managed domestic woodlands and forests than there is from imported products that come with a greater transport emissions footprint, and where it is unknown if local social and economic sustainability has been accounted for. Once you bring together the idea of reliability with true sustainability through local sourcing, you suddenly have an offer which is compelling and attractive. It is all about reassurance and offering architects product they can confidently stand behind. Brimstone thermally modified timber is a product that is achieving this, and its growing use is testament to its appeal. www.brimstonewood.co.uk ENQUIRY 54

Successful Times For Stelrad Despite Challenging Radiator Marketplace At a recent media event held in London leading radiator manufacturer Stelrad took the opportunity to update the media on the state of the radiator marketplace. In addition it tried to point the way for Stelrad in the immediate future whilst the overall impact of the Brexit vote fails to become too obvious with uncertainties about the future hampering the UK population’s investment decisions. As with other sectors in the UK economy, against a backdrop of economic uncertainty, growth in the UK radiator marketplace has stalled somewhat as a result primarily of the economic climate following the Brexit vote. Some of the key facts that have adversely affected the radiator marketplace include: • Social Housing spend has fallen significantly over the past two years • The Commercial radiator marketplace is in structural decline as alternative technologies gain ground • Despite an improving trend, residential New Build remains at a historically low level – that despite the claims from Government that planning consents are at an all-time high – it’s one thing getting planning consent, quite another to get houses out of the ground • And on a more positive note, Private RMI business – the one off sector as we know it, which represents 60% of the market - has remained stable. Forecasts for the next few years - The forecast for the radiator marketplace in 2016 is that we will see a 2% volume reduction year on year but that recovery is expected, driven by an eventual residential new build upturn in the years ahead. The brightest light on the horizon is that designer radiator volumes are forecast to see an increase of 5% volume growth in the years to 2018, outperforming the radiator marketplace as a whole. This is a sector that Stelrad is embracing wholeheartedly with its range of premium towel warmers, decorative steel tube models, its multi-columns and its premium panel radiators. Increased market share - When the market in any sector shrinks it’s a key target of major manufacturers to increase their market share and this is something that Stelrad strives to achieve year on year. It has traditionally had market leadership in the Contract sector and in the Private RMI Steel

Panel radiator marketplace and over the past two years – 2015 and 2016 – it has defended and retained these positions. In addition, it has expanded the market for Designer radiators, particularly Premium Panel products whilst developing a market leading position in Designer radiators and establishing a credible position in the towel warmer marketplace. New additions in 2016 - 2016 has seen a number of product range extensions to make the Stelrad range even more comprehensive including the Softline Deco, Plan and Vertical range extensions, along with a new range of Vita vertical radiators. The Aqua series has taken off in a big way and the introduction of the Planar HD has targeted the Commercial sector, offering robust performance. Support for the brand - Stelrad continues to invest in its brand through differentiation and innovation not just in the range of products it offers but in the way it builds relationships with the key players in the marketplace and communicates with them. It has invested significantly in trade marketing in 2016 to communicate its solutions to the marketplace including a huge investment in its impressive web site which has delivered significant benefits to the company and the brand. Another important initiative is a significant 5-year asset base investment across the group. Finally, the existing Specification sales team has been retained and developed, focussed on winning and retaining contract business, all backed by an improved Business Intelligence organisation that identifies opportunities and feeds intelligence to the sales team on a regular basis. www.stelrad.com ENQUIRY 57

Cost Effective Renewable Heating For Residents The residents of 200 dwellings under the ownership of a Basingstoke Housing Association have been given a welcome boost to both their energy bills and their temperatures with the installation of Mitsubishi Electric Ecodan air source heat pumps. The homes, all located in an off-gas area, were scheduled for an upgrade to their systems in the next five years but have now been fast-tracked for the installation by Sentinel Housing Association. The installations of the 5kW and 8.5kW units are being carried out by local firm Faulkners, who have been installing Ecodan heat pump systems for the past eight years. Sentinel Asset Manager, Carolyn Munns explains: “The main reason for looking for a renewable heat source was the cost of the existing fuel solutions. This is an off-gas area so they were all powered by either electricity or solid fuel. We are confident that tenants will be saving hundreds of pounds in energy bills by switching to air source heat pumps.” Ecodan air source heat pumps are proven to reduce both running costs and emissions over traditional carbon-intensive heating and are particularly suited to off-gas areas which are heavily reliant on oil. The fact that they also qualify for the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) provides additional financial benefits to the owner of the system. A full list of case studies and customer testimonials can be found on Mitsubishi Electric’s digital library: http://library.mitsubishielectric.co.uk/ ENQUIRY 58

Anaerobic Digestion Plant Expansion Sees The Best Of Everything! Co-operation between leading pump manufacturer Wilo UK and Burton-upon-Trent based MCS approved installation company Renewable Heat UK has seen an existing anaerobic digestion plant on a livestock farm expanded and extended to maximise the benefits it offers the farm– Broom House Farm at Oakethorpe, north of Derby. Renewable Heat UK saw a number of opportunities in the project and with the support of Wilo products, set about introducing new elements to the existing system to show huge improvements in the systems’ output. The newly expanded system saw the inclusion of nine energy saving pumps – Wilo Yonos-MAXO and Wilo Stratos models – that are amongst the most energy efficient pumps on the market. The new improved anaerobic digestion system offers a raft of benefits that are all making a huge difference to the farm. Now all organic matter produced on the farm can go directly into the digester. The system draws methane off the top of the system using it to fire an engine generator that generates 250mW of electricity – 10% of which powers all the electricity required by the farm with the other 90% going to the grid – producing enough electricity theoretically, to supply a small village. The engine in the system has no radiator – it directly heats a large header tank to dissipate the heat, and this water is then pumped around the site using the Wilo pumps to share the heat across the site. The low methane slurry that is the waste product of the anaerobic digestion can then be spread on the fields, benefitting from an 80% reduction in smell as a result of the anaerobic process that has resulted in a major reduction in complaints from the farms neighbours. In addition the fertiliser is activated far more quickly on the fields after digestion. But the benefits don’t stop there. The heat generated by the system’s engine sees the drinking water for the cows heated to 30 degrees C which has resulted in an 8-10% better milk yield and the cow shed is heated to 20 degrees C resulting in faster growing, healthier calves on the farm as well. Healthier animals also require far less antibiotics. The cows also benefit from better quality feed as in the past feed was put out and left for the cows to eat. Now fresh food is put out every day and the old feed goes into the digester. www.wilo.co.uk ENQUIRY 63

Omnie For Sutton Coldfield House UFH The refurbishment of a substantial private house in one of the Midlands’ most popular areas has underlined not just the versatility and performance capabilities of the underfloor heating systems available from Omnie, but also the comprehensive design support available from one of the sector’s most eminent manufacturers. The entire ground floor of the property in Sutton Coldfield, close to parkland and a popular golf course, now benefits from the installation of the Omnie ClipPlate underfloor heating network. The rooms served include the spacious lounge, kitchen, family room, dining room, utility, hall, cloakroom and a guest suite. Omnie always offers customers a comprehensive specification and design service to help ensure the completed project achieves the client and consultant’s objectives and the plans for the extensive Sutton Coldfield property stand out for the density of pipe connections necessary around key central floor areas. The very detailed layout provides guidance on both distribution routes and individual room patterns. In total, over 1500 metres of the rugged, 16 mm diameter polybutylene pipes were laid into the preformed upstands of the ClipPlate panels, and connected back to two custom built, eight port Omnie manifolds. These are located adjacent to the utility room and cloakroom, allowing the individual zones to be isolated during commissioning and balancing.

With a design flow temperature of 550 centigrade, the underfloor heating option not only frees the downstairs wall-space of radiators, but provides excellent comfort levels for occupants while also helping to optimise the performance of the home’s high efficiency, gas condensing boiler. A Surrey based contractor, who specialises in retrofit and conversion work, Unlimited Repairs, carried out the installation of the ClipPlate baseboard and pipework, following Omnie’s guidance documents. Omnie’s well proven and widely specified ClipPlate system simplified installation by avoiding the need for staples or other clips; with the individual runs of pipe being rapidly pressed into place before testing and the laying of the finished screed. The panels interlock and protect the pipes from being displaced or damaged by other trades working in the area or from floating up as the screed is laid and finished. The panels are also available with integral insulation to enhance the thermal performance of the completed floor structure. www.omnie.co.uk ENQUIRY 66

HOOLA Precast Balconies A Team Effort From Schöck And Thorp Tidal Basin Road in East London, gateway to the soon-to-be regenerated Royal Victoria Docks area and a short stroll from the Excel Exhibition Centre, is now home to a new twin tower glassclad landmark building – the 'HOOLA'. This £80m development has transformed a brownfield site into two rippling 23 and 24 storey glass towers that effectively sit on a ‘landscaped lid’; which covers the single level basement and accommodates parking and refuse plant spaces. The buildings are super-insulated and the concrete frame will act as a heat sink – absorbing heat on warm days and releasing it back into apartments when it cools. An innovative link-up with the neighbouring ExCel Exhibition Centre will also see excess heat piped directly into the two towers. There are 360 apartments and all apartments have floor-toceiling windows and sliding doors with balcony access, so a design requirement for such a super-insulated building was the avoidance of any risk of thermal bridging at the many concreteto-concrete balcony connectivity points. Highly efficient structural thermal breaks were required throughout and the preferred solution was the Schöck Isokorb type K for cantilever balconies. With its innovative HTE pressure-bearing module and Neopor® core, the unit provides extremely high thermal resistance; and is also a load-bearing element which transfers bending moment, stress and shear forces. Complex balcony detailing for Thorp Precast The balconies on the HOOLA, which are all precast in a Reconstituted Portland Stone Concrete, meant that thermal break suppliers Schöck had to work closely with specialists Thorp Precast, whose Technical Director Luke Smerdon-White, said: “We had to design, manufacture and deliver 1410 precast concrete balcony sections that had to then be cast integrally with the in situ concrete structure. The design and detailing coordination on our part was taken from the 2D consultant’s information, which we converted into 3D Tekla modelling. The balcony detailing is complex. “ “The exposed front-face is curved, with almost 50 different dimensional configurations, while the internal face has a facetted line that had to correlate with the glazing line and opening doors. The ability to integrate the Schöck Isokorb thermal breaks using 3D BIM details was critical; as we had to both accommodate the slab and column reinforcement and achieve the finite positioning of the connection modules for structural and cost efficiency”. On super insulated buildings, balcony insulation is especially critical Research at the Oxford Institute for Sustainable Development at Oxford Brookes University shows that as a result of airtightness and fabric U-values being improved in UK building, thermal bridge heat losses are responsible for an increasing percentage of the overall building heat loss. It is common for thermal bridges to account for 20% - 30% heat loss in multi-residential units and balcony connections can be a major contributor to the thermal bridge heat loss if effective thermal isolation is not included in the design. Schöck offers a number of highly effective solutions to various thermal bridging situations. In addition to concrete-to-concrete capability, the Isokorb range provides totally verifiable solutions for concrete-to-steel, steel-to-steel and even a maintenance free alternative to wrapped parapets. The requirement that the temperature factor used to indicate condensation risk (the fRsi value), in residential buildings, must be equal to or greater than 0.75 is comfortably met by incorporating the Isokorb. Marmox Thermoblock Specified For Low Energy Extension To Kent School The construction of a new extension to the teaching facilities at Glebe School in West Wickham, Kent, has featured the use of 140 mm wide Thermoblock units manufactured by Marmox Limited, specified to carry the main structural envelope of the two-storey building. The incorporation of Thermoblocks at the wall-floor junction results in the virtual elimination of the heat loss at this cold bridge. The new building will provide the secondary school with a number of facilities including an artroom, additional classrooms and new washrooms. Furthermore, as is common now in the education sector, the extension has been designed to achieve very good standards of energy consumption through high levels of insulation. Marmox Thermoblocks are ideally suited to this ‘Fabric First’ approach and are regularly used to address the problem of perimeter heat loss at both ground and upper floor levels in either timber frame or more traditional masonry construction. Thermoblock, which has a compressive strength of 9N/mm2 was specified for this demanding application of footing the supporting walls. Thermoblock then serves to greatly extend the heat flow path for the critical floor/wall junction throughout the life of the building. The 600 mm long units incorporate mini columns of high strength concrete to support the load of the wall above, while the low lambda value insulation effectively lengthens the path for cold-bridging. They are laid just using ordinary bricklayer’s mortar and then by sealing the interlocking ends together with Marmox Multibond, they create a permanent waterproof seal onto which the block or brick wall is then build on. www.marmox.co.uk ENQUIRY 70

Hollo-Bolt Specified For 8-Story Facade Sculpture Lindapter’s Hollo-Bolts were used to connect the eight-story artistic facade to the western wall of Helena 57 WEST in New York. The ‘Flows Two Ways’ sculpture spans 18 by 18 metres and was designed by Stephen Glassman to complement the main entrance to the neighbouring skyscraper VIA 57 West, dubbed The Great Pyramid of Manhattan. The monumental cladding was from a stainless steel mounting matrix to which 35 interlocking panels and 400 18m aluminium tubes were installed. The engineers needed a secure and discreet connection for the layered construction and anchoring system. The brief required a durable connection that would withstand seismic loads and extreme weather conditions. The engineers researched various connection methods which were evaluated for their ability to accommodate forces generated by wind and earthquakes. They concluded that the Hollo-Bolt by Lindapter was the best choice for the application because it is approved by ICC-ES for use in all seismic design categories (A-F) for resisting wind loads and seismic loads. After contacting the Lindapter technical department, American Signcrafters used 250 stainless steel Hollo-Bolts to secure the components to the stainless steel grid. Using the Hollo-Bolts resulted in a discreet architectural finish, which complemented the design of the sculpture. Moreover, the high strength long lasting materials ensured that the connection would out-live the other parts of the facade, avoiding unnecessary maintenance. Moreover, eliminating the need for onsite drilling and welding allowed a convenient, quick and easy installation, without area closures or damaging the metal components. Altro Sets Clinical Standard For New Medical Centre

Altro’s flooring and wall cladding systems are proving their clinical capabilities in a new state-of-the-art primary healthcare facility in Maidstone, Kent, where safety and infection control are paramount. Redeveloped from an existing building by main contractor Willmott Dixon Interiors, Albion Place Medical Centre combines a local GP practice with services provided by Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership, plus an on-site pharmacy. The three-storey medical centre was designed by GDM Architects, whose priorities for the selection of flooring and wall cladding were clear. “Our key drivers for the new medical centre were safety and infection control, so the flooring and wall cladding had to meet very stringent requirements,” says senior architect Ben Jugoo.

Altro Suprema™ safety flooring was specified for the staff changing area, very much with design in mind. Ben explains: “Here, we wanted to use bold design, while also providing excellent slip resistance. We combined three shades of Altro Suprema- Wolf, Caspian and Platinum.”

“We chose Altro’s range of products because of their suitability for clinical environments in terms of safety and hygiene. They also offer a great range of colours, tones and textures, which gives us the flexibility to create an appealing, modern, design-led environment, while keeping within strict health guidelines.”

Altro Suprema is safety flooring with a designer feel. This stunning, nonsparkle safety flooring gives complete design freedom, with 40 colours including three ‘flake’ designs, to choose from. Altro Walkway™ 20 SD (static dissipative) safety flooring, in the shade Fog, was chosen for the computer server room. Altro Walkway 20 is a hugely popular, hard-wearing 2mm safety flooring which provides lifelong slip and abrasion resistance.

For the circulation spaces on all three floors of the medical centre, and on the staircase, Ben and his team selected Altro Wood Safety™ safety flooring in Oak Traditions. Altro Wood Safety creates a homely, comforting and familiar look without compromising on safety. There are 16 wood-look designs, including classic, contemporary classic and on-trend. The product works well with contemporary décor such as metal and glass areas, mood lighting, vibrant colours and monotone themes.

To minimise the damage from trolleys and buggies in circulation areas, GDM specified Altro Fortis™ corner protection for all external corners in the building. For the medical centre’s showers and hand basin splashbacks, GDM opted for Altro Whiterock Chameleon™ in Pure Innocence. Altro Whiterock has a grout-free surface, which means a vastly reduced chance of harbouring infection, and makes it easy to clean. The Altro Whiterock and Altro Fortis were installed at the medical centre by Goss Environmental Coatings.

In the consulting rooms throughout the medical centre, GDM Architects chose Altro Zodiac Smooth™ flooring. Altro Zodiac Smooth provides an adaptable design that works anywhere, and hits the mark on durability. It’s ideal for large areas, from care homes to student accommodation. It comes in a range of 24 colours, chosen to reflect any mood. It’s easy to maintain and can be welded to provide a hygienic surface.

The medical centre’s Practice Manager, Sue Smith, comments: “The flooring and wall cladding really contribute to creating a practice that’s both functional and hygienic, yet visually appealing as well, which is so important for patient and staff comfort. The wood effect flooring, in particular, looks great — and just like real wood —but it’s also very practical and feels safe underfoot.” www.altro.co.uk ENQUIRY 72

The Revival Of Liverpool’s Famous Tiled Pavement St. George’s Hall, Liverpool is regarded as one of the finest examples of a Neo-Classical building in the world. When constructed in the 1850s, the intricate encaustic tiled floor was the largest Minton pavement in the world at over 30,000 individual pieces. Today, the tiled floor is undergoing major restoration and the first stage is successfully completed. The complexity of the original Minton design makes this project one of the most exacting ever undertaken by the UK specialist tile manufacturer Craven Dunnill Jackfield. Harvey Lonsdale Elmes, a London architect aged just 25, won a competition to design the original Hall, along with the new assizes court. Construction started in 1841: the building opened in 1854. Magnificently decorated, the Great Hall is part of St. George’s Hall and features a barrel vaulted ceiling, stained glass windows, bronze doors, glittering chandeliers and the elaborate, Minton tiled floor. The floor depicts Liverpool’s history and is littered with maritime and classical imagery, including Liver Birds, Neptune, sea nymphs, dolphins and tridents. Located in the maritime mercantile area of the city, St. George’s Hall is part of the UNESCO Liverpool Heritage Site. Alan Smith, Manager of St. George’s Hall has overseen the project. “The hall is the emotional heart of the city of Liverpool, where people look to congregate in good times and bad. The sunken Minton floor features over 30,000 encaustic tiles and since its installation in 1854 has been largely covered up. The majority of the tiles have therefore been preserved in excellent condition but the periphery has been worn away through regular footfall. In recent years, the entire floor has been revealed more frequently and the whole of the Great Hall bursts into colour, light and splendour, making a magnificent cultural experience.” Craven Dunnill Jackfield is the only company in the world capable of manufacturing such complex encaustic tiles, using traditional hand processes and skills to achieve tiles that match the original Minton tiles. The complexity of the project is hugely demanding; hand-carving the tile moulds

for the project alone took several months, whilst each tile is individually hand-pressed and cut to size before firing. At the outset Chris Cox from Craven Dunnill Jackfield visited the site to meticulously measure and photograph each panel, concentric ring and individual tile. Pantone references, referred to as clay/inlay test samples, were also matched for each of the 14 colours. Back at Craven Dunnill Jackfield’s factory at Ironbridge, the photographs were rectified to the correct size and printed for reference and then magnified onto acetate. These were used as artwork for the mould-making stage. Blank moulds were individually cast and 24 hand-carved, precisely copying the minute detail of the artwork. The mould-making process took several months; accuracy at this stage is fundamental to the success of the project. The individual tiles were hand-pressed, incorporating the relevant colours as slip or clay inlays. The tiles were then hand cut to size and fettled before firing, the latter taking two days. Once fired, the tiles were once again hand cut to size and fitted together, carefully checking the final dimension of the decorated panel exactly matched the original. They were then carefully packed and transported to site to be fitted. The replacement tiles are manufactured using vitreous clays of low porosity. These replicate the look of the originals but will prove stronger and more durable than the Minton originals. In 2007, St. George’s Hall was reopened after a £23m refurbishment project. Since then, separate fund-raising efforts have taken place in order to restore five of the seven Minton roundel panels and tiled walkway which frame the Great Hall, the tiles of which have dramatically worn. Craven Dunnill Jackfield has now completed the first stage, successfully manufacturing replacement tiles for the one of the panels, returning it to the original, gloriously rich colours. www.cravendunnill-jackfield.co.uk ENQUIRY 73

Dural Cross Joints – A New And Innovative Solution For Connecting Crossing Movement Joints Subfloor movement is a significant consideration in any tiled floor installation. In almost all build projects the surface layer of tiled flooring will expand and contract at different rates to that of the subfloor beneath it. Because of this it is essential for flooring installations to have some sort of movement protection which comes in the form of movement joints. Incorporating movement joints into tiled flooring installations means any heavy stresses and vertical movement will be effectively absorbed, protecting the surface tiles. However, a common problem that arises is where the expansion joints need to cross over each other. These junctions are technically demanding to install and produce, time consuming and expensive for installers. As a result, Dural has recently introduced a new and faster way of creating these junctions, compared to traditional methods, in the form of their new Cross Joints. These pre-formed junctions provide an effective connection between crossing expansion joints. Benefits of Dural’s Cross Joints for tiled flooring installations Dural’s Cross Joints will ensure tiled flooring installations conform to BS5385, and are a new and unique solution for creating a fourway junction. The joints allow movement accommodation in all directions simultaneously and absorbs the stresses created by vertical movement from expansion and contraction across the four surface areas at the junction. This means the stresses are not transferred into the surface tiled flooring, preventing cracks, loose tiles and ‘tenting’ or ‘popping’ of the tiles. www.colouredmovementjoints.co.uk ENQUIRY 74

Looking For A Whitewashed Floor? Bona White is a new wood floor primer designed to produce an on-trend bleached look when used in conjunction with a Bona polyurethane lacquer. The intensity of ‘whiteness’ is dependent on how many coats are applied. This client wanted a whitewashed look to their original Victorian floor boards to tie in with the soft greys of the kitchen. This was achieved by the application of two coats of Bona White under two coats of Bona Traffic HD lacquer. The works were part of a complete renovation of a Victorian town house in Bath and were carried out by Bona Certified Contractor, TWF Bath Ltd, who specialise in the restoration and fitting of traditional wood floors. Before treatment, the TWF team filled large gaps using reclaimed pine wedges and then sanded the floor to 100 grit abrasives. Smaller gaps were filled using Bona Mix & Fill, which is mixed with sanding dust from the floor to ensure the filled areas blend in with the rest of the surface. The floor was then sanded using 120 grit abrasives before the application of the first coat of Bona White. The floor was then abraded using a Bona Scrad Pad to remove any grain raising from the surface before the application of the second coat.

To produce a highly durable, easy to maintain finish, two coats of Bona Traffic HD lacquer were applied. Traffic HD is Bona’s toughest lacquer. The very low VOC content and low odour mean there is no need for homeowners to vacate their property while the works are being carried out and there is no lingering smell. Its fast cure time means the floor can be in full use just 12 hours after treatment – making it an ideal choice for commercial floors too where there is little available downtime for renovation. TWF’s clients chose the Matt version of Traffic HD for their kitchen floor. Silkmatt and Extramatt sheens are also available. As a Bona Certified Contractor, TWF Bath is part of Bona’s network of highly trained wood floor specialists - independent wood floor companies who have received extra in-depth training in the use of Bona’s wood floor finishing products. www.bona.com ENQUIRY 76

Heraklith Roof Board Respecified For Restoration Of Richard Rogers House A detailed refurbishment project to conserve an architecturally significant residential property is making use of a special composite woodwool board from the range supplied by Marmox Limited to ensure not just the integrity of the work, but also the building’s long term performance. The house in Wimbledon was originally designed and built by acclaimed architect, Richard Rogers to serve as his parents’ home and takes inspiration from some of the Modern Movement buildings of the early 20th century. Completed in the late sixties, the property features extensive glazed elevations and a flat roof of minimal depth, where the designer of such iconic structures as Lloyds insurance offices in the City of London, chose to employ Heraklith woodwool “Roof Board” to help regulate humidity levels within the occupied space. Basically the depth of the roof did not provide sufficient space for ventilation and instead Rogers specified the special grade woodwool board to absorb moisture from the air when humidity levels are high. But then when the air is dry, it will release moisture back into the air. This keeps the room humidity constant and comfortable, while also reducing the risk of surface condensation which can lead to mould growth. In fact the Roof Board was manufactured specifically for this project, incorporating timber slats to provide additional strengthen and allow them to sit unsupported above the ceiling. www.marmox.co.uk ENQUIRY 79

Flat Roof Manufacturer Bauder Extends BIM Library Following the arrival of the UK government’s BIM mandate back in April, which requires all centrally procured public sector building projects to be BIM Level 2 compliant, flat roof manufacturer Bauder has extended its BIM offering with the creation of 19 new waterproofing system objects that are available now for free download on its website. The launch of Bauder’s new generic BIM models means its comprehensive library now includes objects for its bituminous, single ply, cold liquid applied, hot melt and green roof system options, which can easily be dropped into 3D models and plans. This allows architects, designers, specifiers and contractors to easily access and share all of the object information needed at the concept and design stage of a project. All of these BIM objects are available in Revit format, which according to NBS’ 2016 National BIM Report is by far the most popular tool used for producing drawings. In order to ensure that your BIM object meets the exact requirements of your building you will need to register your project with Bauder, who can in turn provide you with all the necessary technical support and resources. Bauder’s Technical Director Nigel Blacklock commented: “A lot of the ideals that BIM is based upon, such as promoting the use of quality, long-lasting materials that deliver life-time value and getting things done properly first time on a project, align with our own principals as a market-leading manufacturer of flat roofing products. As a result, we will continue to invest our time and resources into BIM in order to extend our offering, as we see it as an integral part of the future of the built environment both in the public and private sector.” For more information on BIM and to download your free objects now visit www.bauder.co.uk ENQUIRY 82

Portakabin Buildings For easyJet’s Flagship Modular Hangar Facility Portakabin, the UK’s leading modular building specialist, has provided multiple buildings for a new flagship aircraft maintenance hangar at Gatwick Airport for Europe’s leading airline, easyJet. Portakabin worked in partnership with easyJet and alongside Rubb Buildings who designed and installed the 5,490m2 twin span hangar, which has a modular steel frame fitted with 8,700m2 of insulated PVC membrane. The facility can accommodate up to two aircraft for light-base overnight maintenance. Around 1,000m2 of accommodation were provided by Portakabin for 30 onsite staff to facilitate the maintenance of easyJet’s fleet of aircraft, which is carried out overnight, seven days a week. Six Portakabin buildings were installed inside the hangar structure for two maintenance control stations, an additional office area, a locker room, toilets, showers and changing facilities, and a workshop. A larger modular building is located externally, immediately adjacent to the hangar, for the storage of parts and tooling on the ground floor with offices, a canteen and a meeting room above. It features large picture windows overlooking the airfield and a vinyl wrap with easyJet and Lufthansa corporate branding. Both the hangar and the Portakabin buildings were designed and constructed to give easyJet a fast, flexible and cost-effective solution for at least five years. All the buildings can then easily be dismantled and re-purposed if required. This approach will allow easyJet to respond to potential future developments and uses for the site at Gatwick Airport.

Commenting on the project, Tim Coles, Project Manager at easyJet said, “Our experience with Portakabin has been excellent. This latest project at Gatwick Airport was managed really well, which is critical when working on an airport with very limited timescales.” “The Portakabin team was professional and highly organised. We are very impressed with their buildings, which have created an excellent base for our maintenance team. The approach of using Portakabin buildings also gives us the flexibility to relocate the facilities, as and when required.” Portakabin reduced work on site to around four weeks and installed the buildings in a challenging working environment on a highly secure and constrained site. The team collaborated with multiple contractors and the whole maintenance facility had to be erected and ready for use as quickly as possible. The Portakabin buildings will be on hire for at least five years and were supplied complete with staircases, air conditioning, fire alarm system, emergency lighting, and entrance canopy. Portakabin has undertaken more than 10 interim modular building projects for easyJet including at its head office in Luton, at Gatwick Airport and Liverpool John Lennon Airport. Wraptite-SA Delivers Airtightness At An Altitude Of 1400M

Notifier Gets A View From The Top At The Royal Liver Building

Wraptite-SA airtight membrane has once again proven its capability to deliver high performance airtightness, this time, at an altitude of 1400m on a ski chalet in the Rhône-Alpes region of France. The lower walls of the chalet are constructed as an insulated concrete form, with the upper sections made from timber posts with insulation in between. The timber walls were covered with OSB panels, with Wraptite- SA, self-adhering vapour permeable air barrier being applied to overlap onto the ICF wall to make it airtight, and aged wood placed on the exterior to complete the finish. The use of Wraptite-SA makes a significant contribution to a building’s thermal performance by preventing lateral air movement. Wraptite-SA’s high vapour permeability allows any water vapour to escape the wall construction efficiently thereby avoiding any interstitial condensation problems. www.proctorgroup.com/air-barriers

Rinnai Wall Heaters Are A Blessing For St Mary’s Rinnai, manufacturer of the Energysaver super energy efficient range of gas fired wall heaters, is keeping the congregation of St Mary’s Church in Saltcoats, Ayrshire, nice and warm. Ayr-based installer O’Neil Gas Services was asked to specify and install a new heating system to replace St Mary’s old ducted warm air set up. O’Neil Gas Services is a family-run company founded by John O’Neil and now presided over by his son, Brian. The company, which offers domestic and commercial services, covers the whole of Ayrshire, East Kilbride and South Glasgow. Amongst its other commercial work, O’Neils recently won the Irvine Housing gas maintenance contract for an initial 5 years and a 5 year Gas maintenance contract for Cunninghame Housing Association. Ross McWhirter of O’Neil’s explains that like most churches St Mary’s sees the bulk of use is at weekends with maybe a few mornings in the week, so the important factor was to design a system that would give instant heat when required, quickly and efficiently and not wasting fuel when not in use. Energysaver 1004T units run on Natural Gas or LPG and as the units are fully modulating, heat output is reduced as the space temperature rises. The heaters also come with a tiny 80mm flue for a neater finish and the heaters themselves sport safer low temperature casing so there is no danger of burns. Warm air is delivered at floor level for greater comfort and coverage even in large spaces like churches and the units can be time controlled for added economy. The Rinnai 1400T is also suitable for central time control. www.rinnaiuk.com ENQUIRY 86

ING Specifies Formica Group VIVIX® For Interior Garden Revamp

Gent Protecting Glasgow’s Prestigious Commercial Property One West Regent Street was considered a conventional build by construction experts, the development site is located in the central core of Glasgow, right next to the Buchanan Street shopping area, which proved to be a major challenge in terms of access. Fire Protection Group (FPG), who were responsible for the design, commission and installation of the site’s fire detection and alarm (FD&A) solution said that there were a number of practicalities that had to be overcome when the system was fitted. The solution selected was the Gent by Honeywell Vigilon FD&A system incorporating the company’s D1 voice alarm system. More than 600 devices were installed in total throughout the entire building, including Gent’s renowned S-Quad multi sensors and detectors complete with EN54-23 compliant visual alarm devices. www.gent.co.uk ENQUIRY 93

When SP Architecture Engineering was tasked with revamping the courtyard garden in the building offices of ING in Rozas, Madrid, they specified Formica Group’s VIVIX® for the facade. Inefficient ventilation had resulted in the condensation and eventual oxidisation of the steel structure and polycarbonate sheets covering the garden. The effects of humidity had also left its mark, causing the premature aging of the painted brick façade which was in desperate need of maintenance. As part of the renovation, the office façade surrounding the garden interior was replaced with 8mm thick VIVIX panels in Porcelana. Formica Group’s VIVIX was specified for the façade due to its rainscreen properties, ability to limit excessive moisture and ease of maintenance. Selected façade panels featured a perforated pattern containing Clementine from the Formica® Collection; thereby accentuating the design through the incorporation of ING’s brand colours. www.formica.com ENQUIRY 94

5-6 Connaught Place Has Been Restored To Is Former Grandeur Located in the heart of London lies 5-6 Connaught Place, which has been transformed by Redrow London, into luxurious apartments with the help of Selectaglaze secondary glazing. Originally built as townhouses in the early 19th century by Graham Taylor the properties were converted into office space after the Second World War and have now been restored to exclusive homes fit for modern living. To ensure the apartments were tranquil, John Sisk & Sons Ltd sought advice from Selectaglaze to assist in reducing the external noise levels. Secondary glazing is fitted to the room side of existing primary windows and when there is a gap between the primary and secondary glazing of at least 100mm, 45dB is achievable. Working with Redrow London and John Sisk, Selectaglaze first installed a sample unit to show the reduction of noise that can be achieved. Satisfied with the performance and aesthetics, Redrow London engaged Selectaglaze to complete the rest of the building. A total of 69 units were installed. Curved units were also installed to mirror the styles of the primary windows. Each secondary glazed unit is tailor made to ensure the closest fit to reduce unwanted draughts and outside noise. As secondary glazing is a discreet and reversible adaptation, it is widely accepted by most heritage bodies. Established in 1966, Selectaglaze has a wealth of experience with working on all building types. Levolux Facelift For Queen Street Devastated by fire in 2008, 619 Queen Street West in Toronto has now been dramatically revived, thanks to a custom perforated screening solution from Levolux. A fire destroyed the original Victorian building, which was then demolished. The site remained dormant for four years until it was bought in 2012 by Hullmark Developments. Hullmark sought to leverage modern building technology to maximise the building’s energy performance levels. Permission was granted for the development, subject to satisfying challenging Heritage Conservation District (HCD) guidelines. Architects proposed the combination of a modern, glazed curtain walled structure, overlaid with a decorative, external perforated screen which would mimic the appearance of the original building. Levolux was approached to develop a custom screening solution to be applied across the north-facing elevation of the building. The solution comprises 53 perforated, polished stainless steel panels, each measuring up to 1.14 metres in width by up to 2.1 metres in height. The panels are fixed to an aluminium carrier system, which is in turn secured back to curtain walling, using the popular Triniti bracket. The Triniti bracket delivers a comprehensive thermal break, in addition to excellent isolation of unwanted noise and vibrations. Each perforated panel is formed from a 2mm thick stainless steel sheet, which is individually finished with an intricate pattern of perforations. Six different diameters of perforations were used in both the panels and supporting structure to further refine the pattern. When the panels are combined together, they create a ‘ghost’ image of the original Victorian building. The fully installed screen extends 13.3 metres in width by 8.85 metres in height and accommodates twelve window openings, as these were present in the original building. Panels have been given a polished satin bronze finish, which reflects a similar appearance to the original scheme. www.levolux.com ENQUIRY 98

Phenomenal Acoustics At Leading Scottish Law Firm With magnificent views over the Glasgow skyline, the new headquarters of leading Scottish law firm, Brodies, is a real showcase environment for clients. The main boardroom is particularly impressive, featuring a DORMA Variflex moveable wall system designed and installed by eight-times FIS Gold Contractor Award winners, Style. Featuring a contemporary graphite finish, this semi-automatic system creates a phenomenal 60dB acoustic divide – one of the highest specifications ever installed by Style. Style is the exclusive UK partner for DORMA, and one of the key advantages of its highly adaptable Variflex product range, is that the panels are manufactured separately to the frame. This allows individual panels to be cost-effectively replaced if they become scuffed or damaged, or if a change to the interior décor is required, all the panels can be updated. Style worked closely with Keppie Design, to deliver flexibility to Brodies’ outstanding boardroom. DuPont™ Tyvek® Reflex And DuPont™ AirGuard® Achieve Impressive Results For A New Timber Frame House Build In Ireland Kilbroney Timber Frame are experts in this increasingly popular method of sustainable and efficient construction, with over thirty years of experience in the Irish house building market. For several of their high-spec projects they have chosen to work with DuPont membranes, both for peace of mind and in order to achieve the desired superior results. Their latest project is an upmarket detached private home in Rostrevor, Ireland built to special commission. A two storey construction with warmpitched roof and attic rooms, the house offers three bedrooms and a large open plan kitchen living area with a vaulted ceiling. Built to standards beyond regulation and for optimum energy performance, the project features the very best in building envelope technology. Over an ecologically sourced timber frame, DuPont™ Tyvek® Reflex has been installed to the external walls with DuPont™ AirGuard® Reflective AVCL to the interior walls. In between is fitted 140mm insulation board and a service batten. Finally, the walls are finished internally with plasterboard and externally they are rendered. The roof covering is slate and the windows are Alu clad and double glazed. The house performs as impressively as it looks, with pressure tests for airtightness from the use of the DuPont membrane system coming in as 0.94m3/(h.m2)@50Pa, with U values of 0.12 wm²k for the timber frame external walls, 0.12 wm²k for the ceilings and 0.12 wm²k for the vaulted ceiling. Mark Cooper of Kilbroney Timber Frame says, “the DuPont membranes were selected following a lot of research to ensure this project would perform as designed, and these were clearly the best materials from what we know to be a trusted brand. The membranes were extremely easy to work with and to

install and the results have been outstanding, we will definitely continue to work with these products.” DuPont™ AirGuard® Reflective is a metallised air and vapour control layer which is 100% airtight and protects against vapour transmission from the interior into the building envelope. Combining high reflectivity and very low emissivity DuPont™ AirGuard® also enhances thermal performance. DuPont™ AirGuard® works together with other membranes in the DuPont™ Tyvek® family and special tapes and sealants to create an air-tight building envelope. This minimises internal thermal losses and helps to create a more comfortable interior environments, while offering significant energy savings. Although sophisticated in terms of technology, DuPont™ AirGuard® is lightweight and simple to install and suitable for either new build or renovation projects. DuPont™ Tyvek® Reflex is a vapour permeable, windtight and watertight membrane ideal for timber frame and vertical cladding, where its properties allow water vapour to diffuse from the structure while also protecting it from the elements. The lacquered, low-emissivity surface ensures long term performance by preventing the metallised surface from oxidising. This means that the functionality of the material is assured from the initial construction process through many years over the life of the building. DuPont™ Tyvek® membranes offer proven durability against both heat and UV stress and ageing. This combination of reliability, service and technical assistance helps to ensure that a building operates as the design intends. DuPont membranes have a full range of certification including CE and BBA documentation. For more information see www.construction.tyvek.com ENQUIRY 100

Pendock Produces Bespoke Collars For Berkeley’s Vista Apartment Development Pendock’s most recent contract has focused on a high-end property development, where Pendock was tasked with helping to achieve the architect’s highest – or lowest – aesthetic ambitions. Some 69 GRP Circular Skirting Collars – plus spares - have been specially produced for Berkeley Homes’ high profile new project at Chelsea Bridge, known as the Vista Project. They are being installed around the base of 400 and 500mm diameter concrete columns to match the skirtings used throughout the 453 apartments. P.M.J. Construction were contracted to install skirting around the bases of the columns and had asked their carpenters to fashion them employing MDF. Unfortunately, this took many man hours and the finish was rejected by Berkeley Homes. The contractor approached Pendock for help, leading the encasement specialist to produce sets of molds so that the collars required could be cast from much more hardwearing glass reinforced gypsum. The molds for the two sizes were manufactured in two halves and shaped to mirror the detail on the main skirtings. Then on site it took just minutes to fill the joints before being decorated to match the rest of the interior décor. www.pendock.co.uk ENQUIRY 103

Guernsey Flats Go Thoroughly Modern With Trespa A landmark high-rise apartment block that was once thought to have outlived its usefulness has been given a new lease of life and a fresh appearance, thanks to Trespa® Meteon® cladding panels.

School, we were satisfied that the product was capable of withstanding the harsh coastal environment to provide a long -term solution without high maintenance costs,” he adds.

Built in 1963, Cour du Parc is 11 storeys high and the tallest building on the Channel Island of Guernsey. Only five years ago it stood empty of tenants and was considered to have reached the end of its useful life. Then an imaginative refurbishment and upgrade was given the go ahead by the States of Guernsey planners.

The refurbishment project reconfigured space internally to provide 50 flats where previously there had been 42 and also made provision for an additional lift. The end result has been a welcome increase in social housing units for the island.

The result is an eye-catching structure where it’s previously uninspiring dun-coloured brickwork has given way to vibrant Trespa® Meteon® cladding panels in two shades of light green. “Visually the improvement to the building and the ability to detail openings and vary colour to enhance vertical features were key to choosing Trespa,” says Phil Roussel, Development Manager of Guernsey Housing Association, which carried out the transformation in partnership with the States of Guernsey Housing Department. “The new panels have rejuvenated a tired old building and brought it up to date for the 21st century,” says architect Ricky Mahy whose practice, Create, masterminded the new design.

Says Mr Roussel: “GHA is a long term owner of this property so we wanted something without a high maintenance requirement. Trespa® Meteon® panels have good resistance to dirt, so we are confident the building will look good for many years.” Trespa® Meteon® is a decorative high-pressure compact laminate (HPL) with an integral surface manufactured using the company’s unique in-house technologies; Electron Beam Curing (EBC) and Dry Forming (DF). It is the company’s leading family of architectural panels for façades and exterior applications, created – as with all Trespa products - in close collaboration with architects, designers, installers, distributors and end-users. www.trespa.com ENQUIRY 104

Of crucial importance was protection against the elements. By using a ventilated façade system, the continuous air flow draws air through the cavity between the cladding and the inner layer of the exterior wall aiding in the removal of heat and moisture from rain or condensation. “On the subject of environmental impact, using a ventilated rainscreen cladding system allowed us to increase the amount of insulation, thereby improving the energy efficiency of the building,” says Mr Roussel. “There were less expensive options we first looked at but, with knowledge of other use of Trespa® on the island both at Sir Charles Frossard House and Oakvale
