Bacteria Has Nowhere To Hide As New Sanitaryware Products Are Launched To Battle In-Hospital Infection

5

Healthcare bathrooms can, if not carefully managed, provide virulent breeding grounds for the growth of bacteria and the spread of infection. Luckily, new innovations from sanitaryware brand Armitage Shanks can help to fight bacteria and provide optimum hygiene and infection control within hospitals. Here, the iconic British brand discusses its new Markwik 21+ fittings and Contour 21+ clinical ceramics ranges. About Markwik 21+ Features are used throughout Markwik 21+’s design to maximise antimicrobial effect. A manual thermal flush feature allows maintenance staff to override the thermostat and flush the fitting through with very hot water, preventing bacterial depositing. An integral thermostat enables water to be mixed closer to the point of discharge – eliminating the cold water ‘dead leg’ and minimizing warm water areas. Auto-flush technology ensures electronic fittings that are irregularly used are flushed with water every day, preventing bacteria formation. A ‘hydro-purge’ facility flushes water through the pipework and inlets to ensure a debris free system after installation and enable flushing after chemical disinfection. Detachable spouts, one piece designs and demountable body components allow for complete washer disinfection, reducing the risk of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Legionella. About Contour 21+ The Contour 21+ clinical basin features advanced drainage to combat water pooling, a common source of bacterial growth. Its simple waste assembly ensures water drains instantly and vertically, through a smooth pipe system, free of steps Contour 21+ basins feature thinner, more angular rims, steeper slopes and a smaller back area—all designed to avoid water pooling and facilitate easy cleaning. Research shows high levels of splashing occurs when taps run into clinical basins, spreading bacteria and viruses as far as two metres. Contour 21+’s HydroFin—an innovative fin on the product base to deflect splashing and reduce it by 90%. The Contour 21+ range includes integral SmartGuard+ antimicrobial additive technology. This antimicrobial protection reduces possible cross-contamination and maintains surface cleanliness and hygiene across its lifetime. Further, the ultra-smooth glaze of SmartGuard+ has been designed to make it more difficult for bacteria to cling to the surface. A seamless fit – and ideal for specifiers The Markwik 21+ and Contour 21+ ranges fit seamlessly together, providing a fully integrated system and the optimum in clinical hygiene. Aside from the healthcare benefits, the products also fulfill the entire supply chain’s exacting criteria. The easy and flexible installation options of the new Markwik 21+ and Contour 21+ ranges makes them simple to install and maintain. Contour 21+ can be installed by one person in 7 minutes compared to the current basin taking two people 18 minutes. Furthermore, the product design makes both ranges easy to use.Hospital environments mean that infection can never be entirely eliminated. However, the use of intelligent sanitaryware can help to effectively battle bacteria and keep infection at bay. For more information on Armitage Shanks’ products, please visit: www.idealspec.co.uk.

TPG Are Celebrating 50 Years TPG – The Parkside Group Limited - is thanking it’s architectural, contractor and fabricator clients as they celebrate their 50th year and welcome in their Golden anniversary. As an independent, privately owned British company, The Parkside Group Limited shares it’s remarkable history and here highlights its ambitious strategy for the future. In 1967, London, a joinery business was founded with a start-up loan of a mere £300. This small enterprise has now grown into The Parkside Group Limited which includes the market leading brands of Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems, Axim Architectural Hardware and Alu-Timber. Hardwired within the DNA of a business that has survived and thrived for over 50 years is customer service. To put this longevity in perspective, when The Parkside Group Limited was founded, NASA had not yet taken a giant leap for mankind and landed on the moon. Since 1967 The Parkside Group Limited has worked through great recessions, 3-day weeks and the Black Monday crash, whilst always maintaining its unique customer service ethos; working with customers to supply innovative solutions that make their businesses profitable. The Parkside Group Limited actively seeks to supply solutions and market leading delivery, that provides the market with cost efficiencies which stand the test of time. Examples of this are operating a 100% in-stock philosophy and twice weekly delivery service, so fabricators can utilise all the cost savings of a JIT policy and for specification clients creating bespoke aluminium profiles & systems that provide fast-track, robust solutions. In 1987 Axim Architectural Hardware joined the group and the famous TC-8800 Transom Closer stormed the door hardware market, and still today Axim is the number 1 branded architectural door closer for reliability and performance. To celebrate the Golden

Anniversary, The Parkside Group Limited has a new brand identity to take them through the next 50 years of ambitious plans. The Parkside Group Limited, now TPG, uses the heritage of the diamond logo, branding aluminium with “TPG” to reassure its partners of the TPG mark of quality. This is backed up with a new website which outlines the Group’s TPG: 2025 strategy, highlighting the processes that have, and always will be, critical to the businesses success. In 2017, TPG:2025 has never been more important, as it aligns with the Government’s “Construction: 2025” objectives. By publishing the TPG: 2025 strategy, TPG will continue to be the partner of choice for the design and delivery of innovative building envelope solutions to the construction industry. TPG is proud to be a highly responsive, service orientated, independent business that is known to help, support and value its employees, customers, suppliers and business partners. The cornerstone of TPG: 2025 is its Innovation Strategy. TPG’s Innovation Strategy introduced the Stage Gate process into New Product Development to take advantage of technological advances in terms of materials, performance and production methodologies. A cross function team works together to research and deliver new products to program, to provide partners with a future proof supplier that develops products that will meet the market’s requirements both now and in the future. The competitive advantage of the innovation strategy provides “fast to market” new products that exceed the offer of the competition at a cost-efficient price. Examples of this are the launch of Comar 6EFT Curtain Walling suite, a system with glazing sizes up to 54mm and high-span additional mullions and transoms, that have the highest Ixx and Iyy values in the industry. www.parksidegroup.co.uk   www.comar-alu.co.uk

VMZINC Reaches 180th Anniversary Milestone 2017 marks the 180th anniversary of the founding of VMZINC® or ‘Société des Mines et Fonderies de Zinc de la Vieille Montagne’ as it was originally known. The company now manufactures zinc for roofing, façades, rainwater goods and heritage ornamentation, combining contemporary innovations in zinc with handmade ornaments for historic building restorations. These require skills that have been passed down from experienced ornamental workers to apprentices since the mid19th century. The company was integrated into the Union Minière Group in 1989, and in 1994 Vieille Montagne became VMZINC (retaining the letters “V” and “M”). With over 2.7 billion m² installed across the globe, the brand now has an international reputation across all five continents. With a strong contemporary image as a mainstream building product, VMZINC rolled zinc offers malleability, flexibility, durability and corrosion resistance and is seeing a huge resurgence in the UK. Ideal for seaming and detailing, its subtle pre-weathered colours are now considered to be evocative of the metal and offer scope for use in new build or refurbishment projects across a wide design spectrum. Projects are publicised worldwide through VMZINC‘s international design competition, the ARCHIZINC TROPHY, which has been showcasing original, quality architecture for almost 15 years. www.vmzinc.co.uk

FILA Takes Care Of New Super-Sized Tiles In response to the latest tile trends, FILA has introduced a new recommended care solution for large and extra-large format porcelain and ceramics. The new programme includes FILA products for a surface Builder’s Clean – and for cleaning of the tile back, to remove possible suction cup marks – as well as treatments for ongoing maintenance. The new programme, which ensures a pristine installation and easy ongoing maintenance, is carried out using DETERDEK and/or FILACR10; FILAPS87 and FILACLEANER. DETERDEK is a safe and fumeless acid solution that’s free from hydrochloric acid; it removes cementitious deposits and building site dirt. As well as cleaning the face of the tile after grouting, FILA also recommends using DETERDEK to pre-clean the back of the tile before installation, to remove impurities and ensure good adhesion. After installation, DETERDEK is used to remove adhesive and cementitious grout residues or FILACR10 to safely and effectively remove epoxy residues, whilst FILAPS87 – an alkaline-based deep cleaner – removes possible marks left by suction cups. For ongoing maintenance, concentrated FILACLEANER can be used diluted for a no-rinse clean or at a lower dilution for a deep clean. The pH-neutral detergent leaves no residue and does not contain a ‘maintainer’, which can attract dirt and make ongoing maintenance difficult. FILAPS87 can also be used for periodic cleans, to remove organic dirt, stubborn stains and wax.To find out more, please contact Fila UK on tel. 01584 877286, email filauk@filasolutions.com or visit filasolutions.co.uk.

Happy Landings With Bradite Refreshed Helipad Air ambulance helicopters now have a distinctive new helipad at a Chelmsford hospital, thanks to a repainting job using Bradite products. Broomfield is the largest general hospital in this part of Essex and refurbishment work was needed on the helipad situated on the roof of the building. Bradite’s CF22 Chlorinated Rubber paint was specified to recoat the previously painted concrete deck. The helipad received two coats of CF22 and was ready to take light foot traffic after drying overnight with full curing taking effect in less than four days. The base colour of the new deck is green with various markings, including a large ‘H’ in the centre. The name of the hospital and other information has been painted inwhite, yellow, black and red, as specified by the NHS. The different signage was all picked out in Bradite’s CF22 colours and stencilled into position.

Not One, But Two Successful Launches In October For RCM The complete through-wall solutions provider RCM managed to complete two successful launches in just one month alone – a brand new website and a new eye-catching exhibition stand. RCM’s new website www.buildingboards.co.uk offers visitors a great depth of information at their fingertips. Navigation on the new site has also been well designed and visitors can now easily find their way around the site in no time at all. The main Navigation button on the site on the top right-hand corner is split into the main product sections: building boards, facades, airtightness solutions and fixings and insulation. Within each of these categories there is a product overview, as well as technical data and downloadable certificates of conformity and declarations of performance (where applicable). Full case studies are also available to download. Further a new feature has been introduced: the Sample Basket. This is where visitors will be able to order their samples online with only a few simple clicks. Rich photography of products used in projects, shown in and on buildings, further enhance the user’s visual experience of the site. RCM is looking forward to growing the site organically, as more products and projects, as well as case studies and news stories are added over time. The other major launch this month was the newly designed and built RCM exhibition stand, which premiered at the recent Timber Expo, UK Construction Week at the NEC on 10th – 12th October. The eye-catching stand has been built to a large extent out of Cemboard, RCM’s very own building-board. Some of the walls as well as the floor were made out of this board with its distinctive grey colour. This further enhanced all the colourful façade samples and the Supertech cladding RCM have to offer, which were cleverly displayed for visitors to admire. Another attractive design feature was achieved using eight revolving through-wall solution models, which showed the materials involved in different through-wall solutions. This provided visitors with a real understanding of how the different materials fit together, as well as being a tactile object which could be further explored by rotating the model and looking at it from several angles. www.buildingboards.co.uk

Flame Retardant Breather Membrane DuPont™ Tyvek® FireCurb™ Housewrap Attracts Significant Interest At UKCW 2017 Safety was at the heart of the industry’s agenda at UK Construction Week 2017, and in response to the keen interest shown recently in the advanced Tyvek® FireCurb™ building membrane, the Tyvek® Building Knowledge Centre was on hand to display and discuss its benefits at the show. Understandably, the concerns of the industry are now tightly focussed on the various materials and methods that can enhance occupier and first responder safety in the event of a fire. Launched in 2012, Tyvek® FireCurb™ Housewrap is particularly relevant as it is suitable for installation in high rise buildings, for use with ventilated façades, and for wall membrane applications in timber frame constructions. The product offers an innovative flame retardant technology that reduces flammability by using a phosphorous containing agent, which forms a ‘char’ layer at the surface when in contact with an ignition source. This thin layer of carbonized polymer is highly resistant to burning and creates a barrier, thus slowing the release of flammable materials from the membrane into the fire. Starved of fuel, the flame spreads over the membrane more slowly, or not at all. Tyvek® FireCurb™ produces less smoke if it does burn; a further advantage for people attempting to flee a burning building, while also limiting flame propagation between floors via the external envelope. Offering extremely high levels of flame retardancy (up to Class B) Tyvek® FireCurb™ Housewrap delivers multiple benefits at a competitive cost. The flame retardant performance adds to the many highly-valued properties of DuPont™ Tyvek® breather membranes, such as long-term wind, water and weather protection, effective vapour diffusion and a significant contribution to energy efficiency and interior comfort. Tyvek® FireCurb™ Housewrap has been installed in high-occupancy and public use buildings internationally, such the

Lerkendahl multi-storey hotel in Trondheim, Norway, the Crumlin Children’s Hospital in Dublin and the Museum of Fire in Zory, Poland (below). About DuPont™ Tyvek® & DuPont Building Membranes and Products DuPont™ Tyvek® advanced building membranes are unique in the market due to their highquality single layer construction. Tyvek®, in all its specialised versions, is naturally vapour open but also durably wind and watertight. Lightweight yet robust, it is easy to install and offers longterm, proven reliability. Designed to protect the building envelope against the effects of weather and moisture, this family of membranes also offers optimal air-tightness and can help to improve the thermal performance, energy-efficiency and interior climatic stability of a building. Tyvek® FireCurb™ Housewrap offers the added value of enhanced fire safety. Tyvek® is also designed to work as part of a holistic and optimal system with a range of other proven DuPont™ Tyvek® products for the building envelope, including the DuPont™ AirGuard® advanced AVCL series, the highly versatile Tyvek® FlexWrap NF and EZ sealing tapes, plus other specialised membranes, tapes and sealants. All DuPont building products come with the renowned service, expertise and technical back-up of a world-class science company. Cooperage Transformed Into Award-Winning Residence With Sliding Glass Rooflight The impressive restoration and expansion of The Cooperage, a former Victorian brewery, is now one of London’s most exciting cultural and culinary hubs, having already earned the architect Chris Dyson Architect (CDA) a raft of industry accolades. This 4 storey private residence doesn’t just celebrate its' industrial roots with exposed brickwork and black steel but also espouses the contemporary with concrete floors, a feature staircase and a bronze clad vertical extension culminating in a stunning roof terrace. Glazing Vision’s Bi-parting Sliding Over Rooflight was key to unlocking the daylight in the open-plan, triple height living space within the converted basement. The Cooperage had had a checkered past before the current owners approached CDA in 2015 about making it their dream home. Originally dating from the early 1900’s the building was used for making barrels for local breweries, then had a stint as the HQ of a French polishing company before being unsympathetically converted into a private residence in the 1980’s. The current owners wished to restore the building, retaining its' period charm, whilst simultaneously seeking to extend it with contemporary spaces and a roof terrace. This brief was not without challenges though - the building was grade-listed, the site was severely restricted with overlooking issues on all sides, and light was essentially only available from above. CDA set about maximising the space by extending the basement laterally and removing the mezzanine floor in order to create a lofty triple-height, living space. This atrium now serves as the building’s core around which much of the accommodation is structured, and through which the imposing steel and glass staircase passes right up to the top of the house. The ground floor is set on a dramatic concrete landing, suspended within the open plan living and dining space in the basement below. The new vertical extension rises from the top of the building, with the elegant Patinated bronze cladding clearly setting it apart from the brickwork of the original building below while adding a contemporary aesthetic. The property houses 3 bedrooms and bathrooms on the first floor, the master bedroom, ensuite and private terrace on the second, and a larger bronze clad terrace on the roof with stunning views of the capital. Unlocking daylight in difficult spaces - The dramatically re-configured basement, whilst offering an impressively large living space, posed a unique challenge. Sitting below street level and with no direct access to daylight it risked becoming dark and intimidating. CDA’s solution was to install a special Glazing Vision rooflight above the dining area. Manufactured at the company’s factory in

Diss, Norfolk this bespoke 6m x 3m Bi-parting Sliding Over Fixed Rooflight was supplied in 4 sections and had to be craned over neighbouring buildings. The minimal internal framework of this enormous rooflight ensured it did not impact negatively on the clean white aesthetic of the dining space below, nor detract from the impressively lofty feel provided by the atrium. The huge panes of glazing ensured that the dining area and adjacent lounge and kitchen areas were now flooded with natural daylight. Maximising ventilation in a basement - Of equal importance to CDA was to provide a means of increasing the ventilation in this basement area. The sliding section of the Glazing Vision Sliding Over Fixed Rooflight is electronically controlled at the touch of a button and travels over the fixed section of glazing to provide a 50% clear opening. The added benefit of this particular type of rooflight, especially where roof space is limited, is that its' footprint remains unchanged whether the rooflight is open or closed. Attaching lighting feature to Sliding Over Fixed Rooflight - One final consideration for CDA and the interior designer, Andrea Larsson Sanchez, was to provide for mood lighting over the 10-seat dining table in the evening. A beautiful chandelier was hung from a framed support attached to the rooflight, manufactured by Glazing Vision especially for this project. The Cooperage continues to impress Awards’ juries - The Cooperage ,already in 2016 the winner of the Sunday Times British Homes Award in the category “ Small Scale Conversion, Restoration or Refurbishment” and earning CDA a shortlisting for “Architect of the Year” , continues to excite the architectural community. In accepting the prestigious RIBA London Award in 2017 Matthew Witts, partner at CDA, revealed that The Cooperage had been a challenging project for the practice, but the result is a “carefully detailed and uplifting building”. Indeed the jury commended CDA and their clients for their “wellconsidered working of an existing building which successfully revealed elements of the original industrial character and set them off against elegant detailed contemporary additions”. The Cooperage has also just been shortlisted in June 2016 for the AJ Retrofit Awards 2017 in the category “House over £500,000 “. A New Record In Dallas Levolux has helped transform a 1980’s built 17-storey office building in Downtown Dallas, Texas, with the addition of a dazzling solar shading solution, applied at ground and roof level. Formerly known as the Belo Building, 400 South Record Street has undergone a comprehensive refurbishment, designed by Gensler. The revived 235,000-square-foot property boasts a new entrance, a glazed lobby area, restaurant and a new Sky Garden, offering panoramic views across Downtown Dallas. As a world-leading solar shading and screening specialist, Levolux was approached to develop a custom solution for this prestigious development. Based on its popular 9000 series louvre system, two large horizontal projections were devised, not only to shield the building from the sun, but to create an interesting architectural feature. Levolux supplied almost 900 trapezoidal-shaped aluminium fin sections for the project. The Fins, each measuring 420mm wide, are fixed at an angle of 45 degrees, facing south, and are set at a pitch of 600mm. The two canopies of Fins provide important shading to glazed areas at lower levels and for the new Sky Garden. This helps to keep solar heat gain under control, resulting in a naturally cool and comfortable environment for occupants. The lower level shading canopy, projects at 7.5 metres in height from the building’s facade and continues around the perimeter of the building. The horizontal structure is supported from a series of vertical steel posts, with a maximum projection of 9 metres. On the building’s east-facing elevation, the main entrance opens onto South Market Street. Here, Levolux provided the same trapezoidal-shaped Fins, but with a twist. The Fins begin horizontally within the entrance area at high level, but as they emerge outside they gradually twist by 45 degrees to line up with the other Fins. The shading canopy created at roof level, shares the same composition as the lower structure, except it has a smaller area. The west-facing roof terrace, otherwise known as the Sky Garden, is a new feature for the building, replacing a glazed roof. The Fins provide essential shading to the terrace, allowing occupants to enjoy spectacular views in comfort, shaded by the louvred canopy above. www.levolux.com

Selectaglaze Helps A Cambridge College To Improve Sustainability In A Grade II Listed building Jesus College, part of the University of Cambridge, is known for its Listed buildings, sustainable design projects and modern architecture. In 2014 it embarked on the West Court development by purchasing the Grade II Listed buildings belonging to its neighbour, Wesley House. The College wished to refurbish the Grade II Listed building to make it heat efficient and sustainable, while also keeping its original features. Main contractor Cocksedge, approached Selectaglaze, for advice and assistance. The primary windows were draughty, allowing heat to escape and suffered from noise ingress and egress. The secondary glazing had to be considerate to the architectural heritage of Jesus College. Selectaglaze had previously worked on the College’s Chapel Court student accommodation refurbishment, where it treated over 300 openings. Selectaglaze subsequently installed over 100 secondary glazing units in West Court. It was important that the secondary glazing did not detract from the original iron casements set into stone mullions. A combination of casements and horizontal sliders matched the original design to avoid the introduction of new sightlines. Finished in anodised bronze, they complement the overall feel of the building. Secondary glazing is used to reduce noise ingress and traps an insulating layer of air, reducing heat loss by 50%. Therefore, those staying there have found the accommodation to be far more comfortable. Established for fifty years, and a Royal Warrant Holder since 2004, Selectaglaze is the leading specialist in the application of secondary glazing for all building types. Fife Offices Open For Business With Tormax Entrance Part of a significant refurbishment project, TORMAX was contracted to install a sustainable combined automatic entrance solution to Iona House in Kirkcaldy, Fife. Effectively minimising heat loss from the reception area of this premium office building, the 4-leaf automatic revolving door allows smooth access for employees and visitors whilst the pass door to one side offer an automatic entrance for less-able users and deliveries. Working with Alliance Electrical Services Ltd, TORMAX recommended using their tried and tested, in-house designed, 5201 revolving door operator. A high specification drive, the 5201 is especially slim in design, allowing reduced canopy height and a minimalist design to be created. Housed in an adonised aluminium casing that is just 85mm by 640mm, the TORMAX 1201 operator that automates the swing pass door is similarly discreet, contributing to an aesthetically prestigious façade. The £300,000 repair, refurbishment and sub-division of Iona House, situated at the John Smith Business Park in Kirkcaldy, was supported by funding from Fife Task Force which was set up in the wake of the closure of Tullis Russell Papermakers with a focus on supporting the local economy to grow and replace lost jobs. Now completed, the quality office space can accommodate up to 400 staff. “Revolving entrance systems have always been the door of choice for busy locations,” comments managing director for Tormax, Simon Roberts. “Not only do they look smart and help keep foot traffic flowing smoothly but they also have excellent green credentials.” A revolving door is highly effective at reducing heat loss from a building, but the low-energy TORMAX 5201 automatic drive allows door speed to be quickly adapted to reflect external weather conditions and foot traffic levels, further improving energy efficiency. Ensuring the door continues to revolve with optimum performance, system specific data is captured and operation is automatically adapted to counter the impact of wind levels, or a build-up of dirt for example. “This combination of an automatic revolving door with swing pass door is suitable for a whole range of different locations including hotels, retail outlets, restaurants as well as office buildings, “confirms Simon Roberts. “It ticks all the boxes for accessibility, safety and sustainability.” www.tormax.co.uk

Kalwall® Puts On A Show Kalwall® translucent cladding has been extensively used to clad the multi-million pound Exeter Road leisure development in Bournemouth, designed by architects Broadway Malyan. Almost 1,000 square metres of Kalwall have been used in this bold scheme which has transformed a former bus station into a 10 screen multiplex cinema, café, restaurant and retail complex. Recognised as a key material in this project, the translucent cladding encapsulates the building across all nine elevations and encloses the external fire escapes. At night the cladding creates a warm, inviting and ethereal glow proving a beacon for visitors while mitigating any issues with light pollution to the surrounding residential and commercial buildings. Kalwall is frequently specified for this type of prestige project where high-end performance and quality need to be coupled with aesthetics, practicality and a long life-cycle. Not only does Kalwall provide a neat and cost effective solution but it also offers complete line-of-sight protection, maintaining privacy for building occupants while bathing the interior with diffused daylighting regardless of the weather. Importantly, Kalwall will eliminate shadows and glare and the stark contrasts of light and shade. The system also enhances simplicity by doing away with the need for blinds, curtains or solar control. Even on cloudy days, the interior is flooded with natural daylight, which means less artificial lighting and, because Kalwall is highly insulating, energy costs are reduced. The standard Kalwall 70mm thick panel offers insulation up to 0.28W/m2K - equivalent to a cavity filled solid wall. www.structura-uk.com/kalwall

Exceptional Transparency And Clear Height New production hall built with BauBuche load-bearing structure - The new eyecatching premises of elobau sensor technology in Probstzella, Germany, are the work of F64 Architekten and planners from engineering firm Merz Kley Partner in Dornbirn. Comprising a low structure with offices, utility and recreation rooms, and an adjacent production hall with a floor space of around 1150 m², the filigree load-bearing structure of trusses and columns and the runway for the overhead crane are all made entirely in BauBuche. The proprietors insisted on a timber construction, explains architect Martin Kopp from F64 Architekten: “Our client is very climate-aware. That’s why we designed a zero-energy building where the heat dissipated by the production machinery is recovered for heating purposes.” Glass expanses complemented by slate-clad façade - The ground-floor offices, recreational rooms and adjacent production space are fronted by up to 3m high glass façades, divided by columns every 5m. The office and the production areas are separated by a sound-proof glass wall, emphasising the client’s commitment to transparency and teamwork and the idea of equality and inclusion at the workplace.

different angles. “The angle changes the way the sunlight hits the building shell and the play of light and shadow produces interesting relief effects,” says Martin Kopp. The building thus mimics a rock, reminiscent of the quarries in the nearby Thuringian Slate Mountains. The narrow triangles between the vertical and inclined façade elements are clad in silver-coloured sheet metal. Slate also features inside the building as a natural stone floor in the office areas. In the production hall, a black industrial floor is in contrast to the filigree lattice girder construction that appears to be floating above the ground and whose top chords are recessed into the hall ceiling. “We aimed at transparency and the impression of open space throughout the entire building,” reports architect Martin Kopp. The high production hall accommodates large machinery and rack systems, with elegant trusses spanning the 25-metre wide hall consisting of slender BauBuche elements. “By using BauBuche, we were able to reduce the dimensions of loadbearing elements, achieving a more elegant look,” explains Konrad Merz, who introduced the architects to the material from Pollmeier and proposed the type of construction. “BauBuche is simply the ideal material when it comes to modern lattice girder structures.” A special feature of the hall’s lattice girder construction are the truss nodes fitted with slotted metal plates and self-tapping dowel connections where the steel part is completely embedded in the timber. This joining method caters for high-precision connections between the top and bottom chords by uprights and diagonal elements, eliminating pre-drilling to save time and money. Posts and wind bracing diagonals of the main support construction are also made in BauBuche. The ceiling and upper wall elements at ground floor level consist of triple layer boards with a white varnish finish suspended between the BauBuche posts and girders, attractively contrasting the natural warm hue of the beech timber with the lattice girder construction. www.pollmeier.com/en/

Above the ground floor level, the building is clad in slate, the region’s traditional building material. The individual façade sections are tilted vertically at a range of

Yeoman Shield Help To Maintain Standards At Oldham School The new building of North Chadderton School, Oldham was built in 2013 providing facilities for up to 1500 students aged between 11 & 18 years. Built without the provision of wall protection to the school’s interior walls, Facilities Manager William Wheatcroft soon noticed that the plastered, white walls, were suffering marking and superficial damage detrimental to maintaining the school’s high standards. “We needed a permanent solution to our problem of continually re-decorating and cleaning the walls along corridors and congregational areas of the school – which was proving to be a drain on the maintenance budgets,” explained Mr Wheatcroft. Yeoman Shield, manufacturers and installers of wall & door protection products, were called in to survey areas in the school most needing wall protection, where it was decided that 2.0mm thick FalmouthEx protection panels would be the answer to stopping the continual damage. The work was to be phased over time as and when budgets became available. The first area to be fitted with Yeoman Shield FalmouthEx protection panels at 1250mm high, in white, were the dining room, boys WC on the ground, 1st & 2nd floors, reception exit area and along the flat to raking wall of the Assembly Hall Stage. Other areas which have received the same treatment over the past 2 of years have included, staircases, refuse points, sports exit lobby, performing arts and music centre along with staff changing facilities. www.yeomanshield.com

Fox Marble Delivers Unique Kosovan And Macedonian Products British company Fox Marble plc is excavating long dormant quarries in Kosovo and Macedonia to provide architects, interior designers and development companies with unique advantages of price and quality, with a colour palette from pure white to greys, red and gold. Chief executive Chris Gilbert, a highly successful entrepreneur, launched Fox Marble in 2012 as a public company, listed on the London Stock Exchange. He writes: ‘Fox Marble is the only British company which owns its own quarries, processing and polishing factories. The quality of its marble and limestone equals the best in Italy. Nine of our ten varieties of marble are unique, with the exception of Alexandrian White, one of the most desirable fine grained dolomitic marbles in the world.’ This dazzling white, from Fox Marble’s quarry in Macedonia, has inspired sculptors, builders of palaces and temples since Roman times. One example is Diocletian’s palace in Croatia. Professional designers and developers are welcomed by Fox Marble’s highly skilled Italian quarry masters to choose their stone, delighted by the absence of ‘middle men’. Low production costs keep prices highly competitive. Marble, for its classic beauty and elegance, has never been more in demand, a huge interior design trend, not only for kitchens and bathrooms, but private mansions, hotels and institutions around the world. Recent Fox Marble developments include marble for Berkeley Homes dockside apartments, Lillie Square, one of the largest residential developments in Europe, £40M mansion in Notting Hill Gate, and most recently the most expensive private residence in Australia, Point Bay in Sydney. www.foxmarble.net

Local Charity Residents Given Level Access Showering Thanks To Marmox As a manufacturer whose product range is synonymous with wet rooms and high specification bathrooms, Marmox has supplied ten of its specialist Showerstone level access trays for an apartment development in Newark, aimed at those likely to have mobility issues. The new-build project at Parsons Mount on the town’s King’s Road, is being built for a local charity by Taylor Pearson Construction Ltd. and will eventually provide 22 high specification dwellings for retirees. Guy Taylor Associates is the regional architectural practice leading the widely acclaimed and sustainable project. Phase 2, where the trays have been used, has created ten, one bedroom flats, on two floors where, on the ground floor the Marmox Showerstone trays were set within a screeded floor, while those upstairs have been installed into the timber joists to maintain level access. All of the 1200 x 1200mm Marmox trays were supplied via the Chesterfield branch of SIG. The Showerstone is a solid shower base that can be laid directly onto timber joists without any further support needed but in this instance, it was the ideal solution for the whole project, being that it could also be sited into conventional cement based screed. Strong enough to support a load of 600kg, the Showerstone is made with a combination of polymer-concrete and GRP material, which makes it almost unbreakable and robust enough to allow vinyl or mosaic tiles to be laid on top, without the risk of compression through point loading. The base profile, which slopes from an outside thickness of 22mm down to 5mm, is designed to be compatible with the Marmox McAlpine drain which is supplied in two versions: for tile or the vinyl flooring applications. www.marmox.co.uk

London GP Surgery Gets The Pendock Treatment Pendock, the manufacturer of Pipe Boxing, Column Casings, Radiator Guards and specialist Perimeter Casings for heating, has supplied a range of products for work on a doctors’ practice, located in South-east London. When undertaking the refurbishment of the Albion Street Group Practice in Rotherhithe, the contractor, Westwise Service Management Ltd., rapidly identified that there was a potential risk of burn/scald injury to the building’s occupants from the heating system’s exposed pipework and radiators as well as aesthetic issues. This led the Project Manager, Huseyin Asim, to contact Pendock as a trusted past supplier to source a protection solution to the issue, which would also be practical in terms of hygiene and the cleaning regime required by a medical establishment as well as safe, the system also needed to look attractive and be straightforward to install. Being a refurbishment project, Pendock was required to produce bespoke as well as standard radiator enclosures for some of the rooms, which are also not truly square. The specialist contractor decided to purchase 17 standard and bespoke Ultima Plus Radiator Guards for the surgery: these Low Surface Temperature (LST) guards have been designed to provide the ultimate in protection against burns, while the ‘bullnose’ corners afford further safety in situations where patients might fall accidentally or be at risk from self-harm. Ultima and Ultima Plus guards, as with all items in Pendock’s radiator guard range, are finished with an anti-bacterial coating able to combat MRSA, Salmonella, E- coli and C-difficile. www.pendock.co.uk

Drainage Without Compromising Design Geberit’s siphonic drainage solution, Pluvia, has been used on the roof of London’s new Design Museum (previously the Commonwealth Institute), allowing its unusual parabolic shape to remain intact, while providing exceptional water drainage. The Design Museum forms part of the Hollandgreen development, located off Kensington High Street, which is a mixed use residential and public sector project, incorporating 56 high-end apartments grouped around the museum. In addition to Geberit Pluvia the project also features Geberit Mapress piping, Geberit Silent-db20, a sound-deadening drainage solution, and luxury shower-toilets, Geberit AquaClean Sela. Safeguarding history The Design Museum has been created within a Grade II listed building, so it was essential that the roof was treated with care, preventing the flooding that had occurred over the years due to under-sized pipework. To retain the roof’s unusual shape, piping could only be included in two existing internal raked columns. A siphonic solution was therefore ideal. Geberit Pluvia has a far greater drainage capacity and can cope with double the amount of rainwater discharge at half the pipe diameter – accommodating a rainfall intensity equivalent to a one in 1,500 year storm. The three new apartment buildings are built in the shape of stone cubes that respond to the geometry and grid of the museum and they include a secure basement car park as well as a spa featuring a pool, sauna and steam rooms. Throughout Geberit products were also specified extensively. To prevent noisy drainage, Geberit Silent-db20, with sound minimisation built-in, has been used throughout the apartments, considerably reducing the acoustic impact of water running through the pipes, helping to ensure residents aren’t disturbed. In communal spaces and in the basement and car parks, Geberit HDPE drainage pipe was installed. Piping pressing solution, Geberit Mapress in Copper and Carbon Steel, was chosen for all the water services. Around a dozen apartment buyers also opted for additional luxury by upgrading to Geberit AquaClean Sela shower toilets, as opposed to the bidets included in the other apartments. Cleaning with a gentle, airy water spray at body temperature, Geberit AquaClean Sela is simple to operate via the controls on the side of the WC or with a remote control. www.geberit.co.uk

Skating In The Quiet Some of the noisiest buildings are sports facilities such as ice rinks, halls and swimming pools where hard surfaces and large spaces exacerbate echoes and chatter. Architects Christensen & Co which designed a new and very inviting ice skating rink in Ørestad, a fastdeveloping suburb of Copenhagen, used a popular and very effective solution to the problem. To reduce sound reverberation, Troldtekt natural wood wool acoustic panels were installed to provide a calm and uniform surface, together with integrated lighting. The ceilings in the heated part of the ice rink provide a natural surface with a warm glow, contrasting between the cold crystalline rink and the warm club facilities. Designed as a venue for sport and fun, the architects carefully thought out their choice of materials and finishes, such as concrete, wood and glass and acoustic panels. The City of Copenhagen also invested additional funds to ensure the project was eco-friendly both in its construction and daily operation. Specified throughout the UK and Europe, the benefits of 100% Troldtekt natural wood wool panels include high sound absorption, high durability, natural breathability, low cost life cycle performance and sustainability as documented by Cradle to Cradle certification at silver level. Available in various sizes and in three grades from ultrafine to coarse, they can be left untreated or painted in virtually any RAL colour. www.troldtekt.co.uk

SuperQuilt Multi-Layer Foil Earns Agrement Approval The effectiveness of SuperQuilt, part of the YBS range, as a single layer insulation solution for use beneath pitched roof rafters, in either new-build or refurbishment situations has been underlined by the award of a coveted BBA Certificate. Agrement Certificate 17/5388 explains in detail how the already widely specified, multi-layer foil insulation can be used to retain energy within attic or habitable loft spaces: cutting fuel bills, improving comfort levels for building occupants and adding value. Importantly it can be employed to address detail areas such as the cheeks of dormers, dwarf walls, bonnet hips and other features. The Certification comes after prolonged evaluation by the British Board of Agrement and covers such considerations as related Building Regulation matters. design criteria, ventilation and installation guidance, as well as regular review by the highly respect authority. Crucially, the Agrement Certificate confirms that under normal conditions the durability of the SuperQuilt will be equivalent to that of the roof it is installed within and will contribute to controlling condensation in the roof space, while offering very good thermal performance. The emissivity of 0.03 for the outer foil is complemented by a declared core thermal resistance of 1.35 m2KW. The Certificate further states that the BBA believes SuperQuilt can satisfy the requirements of not only the Building Regulations 2010 (England and Wales), but also the Building Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2012, The Building (Scotland) Regulations 2004: making it “fit for purpose” nationwide. www.ybsinsulation.com

Wilo Launches Condensate Pumps For Residential Properties

Low Surface Temperature Range From Stelrad

Wilo has launched its new range of condensate lifting units – the Wilo Plavis. The ready-to-plug system has adjustable inlets and a rotatable cover and motor, allowing for quick and easy installation. Servicing the system is equally straightforward thanks to a removable service cap and an integrated non-return valve. The fill level of the 1.1-litre tank in the Wilo-Plavis is monitored using embedded electrodes. The pump identifies the fill level of the tank and empties this automatically as required via a hose comprising an integrated non-return valve. This prevents backflow of the pumped-out condensate. www.wilo.co.uk

Stelrad offers the widest range of radiators available to housing association specifiers including the largest range of low surface temperature radiators, offering safe heat to the young, the old and the vulnerable, with attractive casings that never exceed 43 degrees C, ensuring no burns to delicate skin. These are widely specified for public buildings, nursing and care homes and sheltered housing schemes. Stelrad LSTi radiators have been installed at Oldwell Court in Cardiff in a day centre run by the Alzeimers Society. www.stelrad.com

Rinnai: Space Heater Range, Easy To Install, Trouble Free Long Life Warmth – New Additions Rinnai have added to its range of Energysaver gas fired space heaters which are designed specifically for use in schools, community centres, libraries, conservatories, churches and other large indoor spaces. The range has seen many thousands of installations over the past several years - trouble-free, easy to install and cost effective and efficient operation and performance. The recent additions to the range are the Rinnai Energysaver 559FT and a new streamlined look to the popular Energysaver 309FT. Sporting very sleek casing, the heaters simply blend into the background in line with the need of modern interior aesthetics while offering exceptionally high efficiencies in operation and subsequently reduced running costs. Changes to the Energysaver 559T have been made to the operation board which is now an easy to use touch-control pad sited conveniently and discreetly on top of the appliance, (rather than on the front with a flip up cover). The unit is also supplied with a child lock to eliminate any problem of small hands tampering with the controls. Add to these advantages are the timer function and eco mode combined with the new unit’s ability to heat big spaces very fast. The 559FT has an input of 6.4kW and output of 5.2kW. The streamlined unit measures 554mm x 750mm x 250mm. The Rinnai Energysaver 309FT, like the 559FT, sports a similar sleek casing and turns in net efficiencies of 88%. It has an input of 3.4kW and output of 2.92kW. The unit measures 695mm x 465mm x 257mm. Natural Gas usage has been pegged at 0.31m3 while LPG consumption is 0.26kg/hr. Also available is the Energysaver 1004T with its impressive input of 11.6kW and outputs 10.23kW. Its measurements are 670mm x 930mm x 315mm and it has energy efficiencies of 96% under the guidance of Part L 2014. This puts it in the top rank of space heaters in its class. Like the Energy Saver 559FT and 309FT, the 1004T heater is also suitable for central timer control. This feature allows the building manager to run any number of Rinnai space heaters off a central time clock providing heat to the largest of spaces. The Energysaver Multi

controller is not limited to single Energysavers as the flexibility of the system guarantees units can be mixed and matched to satisfy even the most unique of buildings. Rinnai Energysaver units are very easy to install as they do not need expensive and extensive ductwork, nor do they involve the necessity to run domestic heating circuits for radiators or pipework to boilers. This drastically cuts down on cost and time at the point of installation. Rinnai’s Energysaver range delivers energy-efficient and consistent warm air powered by Natural Gas and LPG options. The units feature fully modulating burners so heat output and energy input is reduced as the space warms up. The Rinnai Energysaver range comprises fanned convection-powered flue models that exceed seasonal thermal heating guidance under Building Regs Part L. In a building with high vaulted ceilings, with conventional convector heaters, the heat will immediately rise to the ceiling. With the Energysaver range Rinnai has successfully come up with a solution that heats from the floor up and by modulating gas usage in relation to room temperature, provides unparalleled levels of comfort combined with efficiency. www.rinnaiuk.com

Devon Development Shows Benefits Of Omnie Underfloor Heating A high quality residential development, being undertaken in one of Devon’s most sought after locations, is making extensive use of underfloor heating systems from the well proven and very versatile OMNIE range. The four properties at Clearwater Court in Clyst St. Mary – two of them conversions of a former industrial building and two new-builds - are nearing completion by Vision Developments (SW) Ltd., creating spacious and energy efficient homes with character. Within the converted paintworks, the modernised masonry construction offers both high standards of insulation and thermal mass while the space heating is being provided by high performance gas boilers distributed by two OMNIE solutions. The boiler in each property is connected via two of OMNIE’s Axios manifolds located at ground floor and first floor level. Across the kitchen and other downstairs rooms, OMNIE’s Staple system has been installed over insulation before being covered by a screed. Then in the bedrooms and bathrooms, the specification switches to the LowBoard 15 panels installed over the particleboard flooring, with insulation between the timber joists. The Managing Director for Vision Developments (SW) Ltd., Richard Parker, commented: “This is a high profile project for us as a regional development company, where we are offering prospective purchasers a very high standard of specification for a sale value of £345K. As well as a high quality finishes and good space standards, we wanted to ensure the properties are comfortable to live in and economic to heat. We have used the OMNIE systems on other projects in the past and know they are both easy to install and reliable, while we are also assured of good technical support where required. Each system is designed specifically for the build from square one: so everyone is covered for their specifications, right through to the tiling on top.” OMNIE provided Vision Developments and the installer, Exeter based Radiate Heating and Plumbing, with detailed layout drawings showing the different pipe runs and manifold positions in relation to the room layouts. The design support included heat loss calculations and flow settings for the commissioning of the underfloor heating. www.omnie.co.uk

CCL Wetrooms Launch The NEW Lo-Seal Trap For Shallow Concrete Floors CCL Wetrooms have launched their shallowest ever waterless trap – the NEW Lo-Seal Trap – at a cutting edge depth of only 55mm. Developed specifically for use in wetroom construction projects with screed depths of below 60mm, the new trap allows wetroom drainage to be installed where standard depth drains cannot be accommodated. The NEW Lo-Seal Trap is the latest technological development to the market leading Linear Screed Drain from CCL Wetrooms. Whilst the current trap provides a shallow drain height of 67mm, the NEW 55mm Lo-Seal Trap offers

all of the same benefits but with the added advantage of a new slimline trap for installation into shallow screed depths of less than 60mm. Designed as the central element of the Linear Screed Drain, the new Lo-Seal waterless trap has an improved design which contains a spring-loaded mechanism, which now locks into position, keeping the trap sealed when not in use. This ensures that even when the shower is left unused for prolonged periods, the trap cannot dry out. The new slimline linear drain allows the waste position to be rotated through 360° to avoid all obstructions under the floor and enables easy installation in wet rooms. Plus, thanks to its’ uniquely adjustable marine grade stainless steel grill, any size or depth of natural stone or porcelain tile can be used alongside the grill, without the need to raise the whole floor. www.ccl-wetrooms.co.uk

Terrazzo Floor Installation Blends Heritage With Modernity According to the National Federation of Terrazzo, Marble and Mosaic Specialists, the popularity and specification of terrazzo as colourful and high performance flooring is growing. Spokesman Brian James comments, ‘A good example is the new terrazzo floor laid in the reception and lift lobby areas of the Grade II listed 1 King William Street development in London which provides an impressive welcome for visitors.

The installation itself was completed by another NFTMMS member TRI Contracting. “We won the business as a result of assisting the architects in specification, samples and advice and competing in the tender costs,” explained TRI’s Brian Connor. “We supplied and installed factory finish terrazzo tiles to all lift lobbies over seven floors and the bespoke terrazzo pattern tile to main reception.”

“Our design intent was to use terrazzo for its robust and hard-wearing performance but also because it is visually interesting material,” explained Ben Leach of architects AAMM. “The grey white tone chip of the terrazzo with flecks of Thassos and Giallo Siena suitably reflects the palette of materials and colours used throughout.”

The NFTMMS represents companies who wish to maintain and improve the standards of craftsmanship and technical control on which the industry depends. It includes companies involved in terrazzo, mosaic, marble, granite, limestone and quartz and NFTMMS members freely offer technical advice and assistance with specifications. Visit the website at www.nftmms.co.uk for more details.

NFTMMS member In Opera Group, specialists in stone and porcelain interior and exterior finishes, was selected to supply the terrazzo for the floor, the Calacatta marble for the columns and the granite for the roof top floor. “This was a significant project for us and we worked closely with AHMM on refining the design in terms of optimising sizes, thickness and specification as well as providing samples throughout the process for design and quality purposes,” said In Opera Group Sales and Marketing Director Enzo Favro. Working with an existing building with varying build-ups it was critical that different thicknesses could be used for the different applications as needed. This required continual review of sizes as site conditions were uncovered during construction. In addition, the requirement of a luxurious inlay in the reception area of two-tone triangular tiles tested skills in design, fabrication and installation.

The 1 King William Street office building refurbishment and extension in the Bank Conservation Area at the heart of the City of London was undertaken for UD Europe. Kajima were the development managers, McLaren the main contractors. www.nftmms.co.uk

Forbo’s Floor Coverings Help To Energise New Student Accommodation Manchester design studio Jasper Sanders + Partners has used variety of Forbo’s products in a combination of bright colours to create an energetic and enriching environment for the tenants of Bristol’s latest student accommodation development. Jasper Sanders, Design Director, outlined the design brief for New Bridewell, which offers students contemporary studio-living with communal social spaces and quiet study areas: “Students are now very discerning about the quality of their living environments,” he said, “and our client, Fresh Student Living, wanted us to create an inspiring and vibrant place, which would not only attract future tenants but also help them to connect easily with one another once they had moved in.” Jasper chose to fit out all communal areas with Tessera Layout carpet tiles which he specified for their modular format, contemporary colour palette and robust durability. Anthracite grey provides a unifying backdrop, connecting the different activity spaces which are highlighted with bright colour pops, yellow being the dominant colour in study areas and a mix of blue shades in more social areas. The ‘pixellated’ layout was specifically designed to reflect the long history of the University’s Department of Computer Science. Tessera Layout was not the only Forbo range used. “We needed to ensure that students living here would not be disturbed by

noise pollution,” said Jasper. “We installed Sarlon Acoustic Vinyl in the studio flats, as the softer surface and acoustic performance should significantly reduce impact sound, and in turn, improve the health and well-being of the tenants.” “When it comes to student accommodation, you need to create interiors that will excite and energise students. It has been great working with the team at Forbo as the service is quick and efficient and the products on offer are very stylish and well designed – helping us to create the interiors we envisage.” For more information please telephone 0844 822 3928, email info.flooring.uk@forbo.com or visit www.forbo-flooring.co.uk/ education

An architect’s vision for a ‘wave-effect’ building with no roof protrusions, to mirror the sinuous lines of nearby hills, has been achieved thanks to drainage ventilation expert Studor. Italian architects, in conjunction with the multi-discipline company STEAM, designed the c130m Monselice Hospital in Northern East Italy to ensure it not only fulfilled the highest operational requirements, but also had a profile in harmony with the adjacent sloping hillside landscape. To achieve this aesthetic look, the integrity of the rooftops needed to be maintained, and the design did not allow for any roof protrusions to interrupt the flow of the roofline. The project’s MEP contractor, Gemmo SpA, recognising that input from an expert in drainage ventilation was needed, asked Studor (with over 40 years’ experience in the field) to advise on the drainage system design. “Our solution was to cap as many stacks as possible with the Studor MaxiVent Air Admittance Valve (AAV) which fits discreetly within the roof space”, commented Studor’s UK Technical Sales Director Daniel Rath. “The Maxi-Vent protects the trap seals within the drainage system by allowing the intake of air so that each soil pipe can maintain the right level of pressure within the system. This is critical, especially in a hospital environment, ensuring there is no cross-contamination from the drainage system into the habitable space.” “Furthermore, the Maxi-Vents eliminate the need for any roof penetrations, thus reducing the amount of pipework required saving both time and money. So, not only is the integrity of the roof maintained, but heat loss was minimised and time was saved onsite.” www.studor.net

FAKRO Roof Windows For Aberdeenshire Passivhaus Self-Build Built on the footprint of a draughty and impractical dwelling on a site in Comers near Banchory, Carsluchie Croft was constructed to the Passivhaus standard. The low energy, sustainable family home has FAKRO FTT U6 and FTP U5 Electro triple-glazed roof windows in a design which maximises solar gain, has high insulation levels (using high density ecological wood fibre) and heat recovery ventilation. The FTT U6 has an exceptional U-value of 0.81W/m2K and is among very few standard products which can meet the exacting Passivhaus requirement in its own right. The FTP U5 windows also had Z-wave connectivity enabling them to be operated from a laptop, mobile or tablet alongside appliances from over 200 of the world’s leading manufacturers. All windows were also fitted with thermal flashings to enhance overall airtightness. The compact 1½ storey form reflects local vernacular architecture, with the angled bay on the south side designed as a dynamic element to contrast with the compact solid stone-clad form of the majority of the house. This alignment is picked up by the angle of the upper floor terrace and ‘cut-in’ of the roof above, the combined effect of which is to create a positive and negative ‘motif’ on the roofscape at the front of the dwelling. The garage and swimming pool are accommodated in a separate linear building, parallel to and physically linked to the main house by a partially covered veranda. www.fakro.co.uk

Robust Rainwater System For Bridlington’s New RNLI Station Bridlington’s new lifeboat station is set to open, replacing the 114 year old original station which has become outdated, cramped and impractical. The design of the charity’s new purpose built station not only considered the practicalities of a working station but also aesthetics as it stands in a prime location on the Spa Promenade adjacent to the beach - a convenient position saving precious minutes in the launch time of the lifeboat. Echoing Art Deco lines, building materials for the new station were chosen for both design impact and durability, as the construction will have to withstand the Northeast coastal elements for many years to come. With this in mind a stainless steel rainwater system from Yeoman Rainguard was chosen. Functional yet stylish, 145 x 165mm box gutters and 80mm dia. downpipes were fitted complementing the sleek linear appearance of the lifeboat house. The new two – storey RNLI lifeboat Station at Bridlington will not only look the part but will play the part too. There is space to house a new Shannon class lifeboat alongside the inshore D class lifeboat. The crew accommodation is more modern and the establishment will also include a workshop, changing and drying room, crew room, and a space for the charity’s lifeguards to store their lifesaving equipment. www.rainguard.co.uk

Neaco Products Make A Splash At Waterside Conference Centre Neaco’s semi-structural glass balustrade and aluminium decking systems have been extensively specified at The Slate, the University of Warwick’s impressive conference centre occupying a waterside setting in the heart of the campus near Coventry. Designed by Associated Architects and built by Speller Metcalfe, the single storey facility comprises 650 sqm of flexible event space, including a large multi-purpose conference room, kitchen, office and plant room. Providing a capacity of up to 400 delegates, the building maximises views of the adjoining lake with a predominance of glazing and no pillars or fixtures to obscure the outlook. Neaco’s Elan aluminium powder coated balustrade lines the full-length of a front terrace overlooking the lake and has been designed to accommodate the view with clear glass panel infills. Most balustrade designs secure glass infill panels in place by attaching them to the stanchions with a clip, but Elan’s glass panels are secured by a top rail above and a subtle floor channel below. The result is a sleek appearance, an economical use of materials and an easy-to-install solution. The terrace also features Neaco’s Neatdek aluminium grille decking. Neaco’s National Sales Manager, Peter Melia, said: “We are delighted to have contributed a specification to this outstanding project. Our Elan semistructural glass system is ideal for the purpose of maximising views which is a vital aspect of this building. Our aluminium grilles are enjoying a major surge in demand as decking for terraces and balconies due to their efficient drainage, exceptional fire resistance, anti-slip surfaces and maintenance-free durability with a lifespan of between 60 and 100 years. These attributes give our products a clear advantage over timber, GRP and composite decking in similar applications.” https://neaco.co.uk

High Capacity Channel System Drains Car Park At Mcarthur Glen, Designer Outlets, York McArthur Glen, the leasing, management and marketing company has twenty one Designer Outlets in eight countries across Europe and is still expanding its business. The new Designer Outlets indoor mall at Fulford, York features over 120 designer brands including clothing, foot ware, eyewear, home wares, restaurants and cafés. The mall is set in 60 acres of landscaped grounds, including an extensive free car park available for customers. Hauraton Limited introduced the RECYFIX® MONOTEC, surface drainage system in January 2016. The McArthur Glen Designer Outlets mall, York, joins numerous installations successfully completed in the United Kingdom. The RECYFIX® MONOTEC system was installed to provide surface drainage in a section of the car park’s asphalt surface. Having a grating width of 100mm (Channel internal dimension) with an overall height of 230mm and a cross-section of 190.5cm2, the 66 metres of channel supplied provide a total water capacity of just over 1260 litres. The MONOTEC one metre long channel component is of a sturdy monolithic design where the HEELSAFE grating and the tongue and groove linking system are integral to the channel moulding. The whole unit is made of tough, virtually unbreakable polypropylene (PP) formulated to be very resistant to daily temperature fluctuations from frost

conditions to strong sunlight, including the Ultra Violet (UV) spectrum. PP is naturally resistant to de-icing salt. Complying with the requirements of EN 1433, the PP is given its UV resistance by adding just sufficient stabiliser so that the structural strength of the material is unaffected and a consistent appearance is maintained. Residents At The Landmark Apartments In Dudley Stay Safe With SE Controls An iconic and popular residential development in the West Midlands, The Landmark at Brierley Hill, is using smoke control systems from SE Controls to ensure escape routes are kept free of smoke in the event of a fire, allowing residents to exit the building safely.

Also, on the second, third and fourth floors, supplementary automatic opening vents (AOV) are provided as part of the naturally ventilated smoke control system to ensure additional stairwells and corridors are kept free of smoke to aid escape from apartments within 7.5 metres of the stairs.

Located at the Waterfront complex adjacent to the Merry Hill retail centre in Dudley, The Landmark was formerly the HQ for a financial services company before being acquired by investment property developer, Seven Capital, who converted it into 181 apartments with Colmore Tang Construction, all of which were sold off-plan within five months.

A further naturally ventilated system is used on floors five and six. Although these have the smallest floor area, a further dedicated escape staircase is protected by AOV louvres at the head of stairs. The main escape route in the seven-storey section of the building is also protected by a naturally ventilated smoke system, which covers all the floors.

The shape of the building and its graduated tiered design, which rises from two to seven storeys, are key features that made the new apartment development attractive to residents, but it also presented a number of challenges during the design and engineering of the smoke control system, which needed to be addressed by SE Controls.

Using an SE Controls OSLoop modular smoke control system and OS2 SHEVTEC controllers together with a range of AOVs, louvres, SECO Ni 24 40 chain actuators and mechanical fan extraction, the system is highly effective and operates as a fully integrated solution.

The building’s five existing stairwells were to be used for escape, but the travel distance from some of the apartments was more than the 7.5 metres specified within Building Regulations Approved Document B for a code compliant naturally ventilated smoke control system. To overcome this, SE Controls designed and installed four individual smoke ventilation solutions based on the specific requirements of each floor within the building, which combines both mechanical fan and natural smoke extraction to provide an effective and integrated life safety system. On the ground floor and first two levels, which have the largest floor areas and highest density of apartments, the building uses an SE Controls SHEVTEC Extended Travel Distance mechanical fan system. This protects the corridors and three of the stairwells where apartments are located more than 7.5 metres from the escape stairs.

Michael Scrimshaw, Business Development Manager for SE Controls, said: “The unique layout and structure of the building, together with its change of use from offices to residential made it one of the more complex projects we’ve undertaken to ensure the full system is not only compliant, but also effective. By fully understanding the escape paths and layout, we were able to engineer the complete system using different smoke control technologies as a fully integrated life safety solution dedicated to this particular building.” www.secontrols.com

The Manser Practice Specifies An Elegant, High-Performance Corian® Facade For The New NGS Macmillan Unit At The Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust When the NHS Chesterfield Royal Hospital commissioned a separate and dedicated cancer outpatient facility, the brief to architects The Manser Practice was to create a comfortable, modern and welcoming clinical environment in which the design would contribute to the therapeutic ambience of the space. The new £10 million NGS MacMillan Unit (partially funded by the charity) offers an optimum range of treatment, testing and care facilities over two storeys, and features an impressive ventilated façade made from Corian® – the versatile and sophisticated design surface that is increasingly specified for the exterior skin of buildings. Guy Barlow, the project architect says, “The use of Corian® internally in buildings is well known in various forms, from work surfaces, to joinery cladding and even lighting. On this project it was selected for a number of reasons. Corian® is one of a very small palette of materials used on the project, and it makes an elegant link to both internal and external spaces. Technically, it can be thermoformed and jointed, allowing curves to be introduced and corners mitred. A further advantage is the ability to laser cut artwork for areas such as the vent panels and the detailing of the louvres, while its subtle translucency lends a softness, particularly at night when light falls across it. It is also a hygienic material that is easy to clean and maintain.”

47

The façade was created by expert Corian® Industrial Partners, Unique Fabrications. MD Greg Beaver explains, “The system uses an open visible joint with a black breather membrane behind. We worked closely with The Manser Practice, and Corian® distributors CDUK, on CAD drawings and a mock-up, and to reassure with all key safety and fire rating certifications from standard testing. The façade design includes custom firebreaks to cavity walls. Over 1,000 square metres of Corian® in a 12mm thickness in Glacier White was applied. This featured perforated panels to the windows and large radius panels thermoformed to the precise shapes required, plus external fins, also clad in Corian®. The fabrication and installation using Kiel fixings took three months.” The new centre opened officially on September 22nd 2017 and can now serve the area’s oncology patients in a much more efficient, localised and sensitive way, tripling the hospital’s previous capacity. The building offers facilities for Haematology, Oncology, Acute Oncology service, Chemotherapy, selected Medical Day Case activity, Palliative Care and Respiratory Clinics and support services, all in one attractive and superbly equipped place. Simon Towers Communications Advisor for the Chesterfield Royal says, “Our cancer outpatient services were spread across different areas of the hospital, not always in the most ideal environments. Some areas had no natural light and were cramped and short of space. This new unit brings all services together, making it easier for patients and more efficient for staff. The difference is enormous! The team are delighted with results

and the building looks fantastic inside and out. Having a pristine exterior that is also easy to maintain, and even repair if needed, will help to keep the new building looking clean and fresh.” Corian® for Exterior Cladding and Façades: Corian® is a highly valued solution for façade applications due to both its aesthetic versatility and long term performance. Completely homogenous and non-porous, it is easy to clean and maintain. It is also fire rated, resistant to graffiti, UV and climatic conditions – and, should any damage occur – the material is repairable. Corian® is compatible with a ‘secret’ fix undercut anchor system and its lightweight, workable properties are a further benefit to both fabrication and installation. Corian® also offers the broadest range of international certification for façade applications among solid surfaces and has passed a series of fundamental tests for its application to the exterior of buildings. These include freeze/thaw cycling resistance, standards proving the material’s resistance to exterior environmental substances, fire performance tests, and tests for abuse resistance. Further information and certificates are available on request from DuPont. In the UK, Corian® sponsors a RIBA approved CPD seminar on Solid Surfaces for Rainscreen Facades. To book this CPD seminar please call: 0800 962 116 Corian® is distributed in the UK exclusively by CD (UK) Ltd. Viewing Deep Shafts In The Round Cuts Survey Times And Costs

New Aberdeen Academy School Benefits From Frametite Airtightness System

Drainage specialist Lanes Group plc has used advanced camera survey technology to dramatically cut the cost, time and inconvenience to the public of surveying more than 100 deep sewer shafts. A two-person team used an IBAK Panoramo SI camera to complete full inspection surveys of more than 100 manholes across Broadstairs and Ramsgate, Kent, for Southern Water in just two weeks. A conventional approach would have required the shafts to be inspected through confined space entry, taking up to three months to complete. The Panoramo SI camera generates a 360-degree high resolution image, plus a 3D point cloud scan, of the inside of the shaft. It can be used for surveying vertical chambers and shafts of 300mm diameter and above. The camera has two HD digital cameras fitted with distortion-free, wide-angle lenses. These complete a scan of structure interiors in seconds, with all data captured in one pass. It is also EX-rated, so provides enhanced safety when operated in hazardous environments with an increased likelihood of coming into contact with volatile gases. www.lanesfordrains.co.uk

The construction of a new £44 million contemporary secondary school in Aberdeen will incorporate the superior airtightness performance qualities of the Frametite air barrier system from the A. Proctor Group. ‘Lochside Academy’ will provide impressive educational facilities for 1,350 pupils in the south of Aberdeen. Main contractor Balfour Beatty required a high-quality air tightness membrane and in conjunction with sub-contractor A & E Construction Falkirk chose the Frametite System as an external air barrier as opposed to an internal air barrier system. The Frametite System comprises Frametite, a low-resistance vapour permeable air barrier for walls plus Wraptite Tape. This approach saves on both the labour and material costs associated with achieving the demands of energy efficiency in buildings. Positioning an air barrier on the outside of the building simplifies the process of maintaining the envelope’s integrity, as there are less building services and structural penetrations to be sealed. By reducing the likelihood of potential failures to meet designed airtightness levels, the Frametite System helps ensure “as-designed” performance, narrowing the performance gap between as-designed and actual energy performance. www.proctorgroup.com

Marmox Multiboards Facilitate Fit Out Of Queenshurst Apartments Work to complete the final phase of a luxury residential development at Kingston-Upon-Thames has included the use of versatile high performance Multiboards from the range of Marmox Limited. The fit out of the bathrooms within the one, two and three bedroom apartments in this third phase to Berkeley Group’s very popular Queenshurst project has been carried out by specialist sub-contractor, South Eastern Carpentry. Its operatives are making use of 6mm thick 1250 x 600mm Multiboards as a robust and moisture-proof tile backer as they complete the bathroom interiors. Marmox Multiboards are manufactured from extruded polystyrene or XPS and offer a range of positive physical characteristics in addition to being fully waterproof. They are both light to handle and easy to cut, while still being able to sustain substantial loadings if required. Tata Technologies Innovation Centre Adds Style And Practicality With Encasement Tata Technologies’ new £20 million European Innovation and Development Centre (EIDC) in Warwick has used more than 70 ‘Forma’ aluminium column casings from Encasement to conceal structural steelwork in the three storey building. Designed by Birmingham based architects, Webb Gray, the EIDC’s steel frame curtain-walled structure provides 60,000sq.ft of office space for around 600 staff and was built by BAM Construction on a 3.85 acre green field site. Supplied and installed by Encasement, the column casings are used throughout the building on each of the three floors to conceal structural supports in the six extensive open plan office areas together with separate conference and presentation rooms and the ground floor restaurant. Manufactured from 3mm thick aluminium and standing 3000mm high, the 530mm diameter ‘Forma’ casings also incorporate an acoustic lining to help dampen noise and reverberation in the office areas. They are also finished in a white PPC coating to integrate with the interior design and reflect natural light. While some of the casings are positioned around the perimeter of each floor, adjacent to the glazed facade, many have also been integrated into the design and construction of the interior workstations, storage facilities and desktops, with cupboard units and meeting tables being built around them. In some locations, the lower half of the column casings are concealed by modular cabinets and integral desks, while in others, the storage and drawer units are designed to be slightly narrower than the column casing diameter, leaving the full height visible on either side, giving variety to the interior layout and adjacent meeting areas. Encasement also supplied and installed a series of semi-circular column casings, which are used in individual offices and meeting rooms where the structural steelwork forms part of the partition wall. www.encasement.co.uk

Hanover Building Unveiled By Remmers The Grade II Listed building located in Manchester City Centre is being refurbished by Quadriga Contracts Ltd as part of the NOMA regeneration scheme to provide Grade A office space, retail and leisure facilities. Constructed in 1905; the interior walls have accumulated a thick build-up of dust, dirt, polish and even nicotine residue, all of which needed to be removed. Following trials of various products, Remmers Arte Mundit Eco was selected as it is a self-vulcanising cleaning paste designed for thorough, water-free removal of residues and soiling on a wide range of substrates. The Arte Mundit Eco was applied using a 4” brush and left to ‘set’ overnight. The set rubber-like material was then removed by hand the following day revealing the original white marble finish. The Client is delighted with the results that the product has achieved. www.remmers.co.uk

Schöck Isokorb For All Three Phases Of Manchester’s Adelphi Wharf Manchester is a city rich in architectural styles and rightly proud of its industrial heritage. Something that is reflected in the design of Adelphi Wharf, a high-end development by Fortis, being delivered over three stages in Salford, alongside the River Irwell. The lower levels consist of stout blue engineering brick, contrasting with the reactive colour-change panels of the upper levels. As the observer’s position changes, these vary visually in tone and colour, which accentuates the many recessed balconies on the development. In addition to the recessed concrete balconies, there are also steel balconies connected to the concrete frame. The latter having spans of up to 1.8m, finished with a metal mesh and timber decking. It is crucial that any risk of thermal bridging is minimised at these various connectivity points. So the use of effective structural thermal breaks are a critical element in the design. Local heat loss is a major factor. Also, low internal surface temperatures in the area of the thermal bridge can cause condensation, if they are below the dew point. This is likely to result in structural integrity problems with absorbent materials, such as insulation products or plasterboard. Mould growth is also a possible risk. To counter any such problems, Adelphi Wharf incorporates the Schöck Isokorb types K and KS structural thermal breaks; which are extremely effective and widely used solutions. The Schöck Isokorb type K with compression module HTE-Compact and 80 mm insulation thickness, is a load bearing thermal break element for free cantilevered balcony construction. Whereas the type KS is suiitable for cantilevered steel balconies and canopies. Both types transfer negative moments and positive shear forces and block the outflow of heat by means of a high-quality polystyrene insulation core. The Schöck Isokorb types K and KS units guarantee totally verifiable performance standards, meet full compliance with the relevant UK building regulations and offer BBA Certification and LABC Registration. In addition to providing highly effective connectivity solutions for these two applications, the Schöck Isokorb range also offers a modular product for steel-tosteel applications – and there is even a maintenance free alternative to wrapped parapets. When any Isokorb product type is incorporated in residential buildings, the required fRsi value – the temperature factor used to indicate condensation risk that must be equal to or greater than 0.75 – is always comfortably met. illbruck Sealing Products Achieve Astonishing Airtightness For Oak-Framed Building Thanks to a variety of air-and vapour-tight barriers, sealants and gap-fillers from tremco illbruck, a new-build oak-framed office building has achieved an astonishing airtightness of 1.5m3/h/ m2 rather than the expected 4.5-5.0m3/h/m2. Rob Halliwell, Area Sales Manager (WF&S) for tremco illbruck Ltd, recommended a combination of three products to provide an air-and vapour-tight barrier in the roof void and extending down into the upper elevation of the ground floor. illbruck ME003 Vapour Barrier is a three-ply co-extruded polyethylene (PE) membrane. It is manufactured from high-grade polymer granulate so it is therefore both highly vapourretardant and tear-resistant. To complement the vapour barrier, Rob Halliwell proposed illbruck ME317 Internal Membrane Tape, a single-sided, reinforced kraft paper tape with solvent-free, modified acrylic adhesive for bonding the vapour barrier overlaps. The third product was illbruck OT301 Endurance Adhesive, for bonding and forming an air-tight seal between the ME003 vapour barrier and the structural elements. www.tremco-illbruck.com
