Stannah Lift Products Star In Spectacular New Entrance To Leeds Station

Opened on 3rd January 2016, the new southern entrance to Leeds Station features four Stannah escalators and two lifts. Working with main contractor Carillion to fulfil the brief, the work was completed by the Stannah Escalator & Moving Walkway Department and Stannah Major Projects team in just twelve weeks. Funded by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, Leeds Council, the Department for Transport and Network Rail, the new extension provides an attractive new accessible entrance and additional concourse built in the River Aire. The building was created to diminish congestion at this busy commuter station into and out of West Yorkshire and the North of England, making it an attractive route for tourists again. Up to 20,000 passengers (or 20% of current footfall) are estimated to benefit from using the new entrance, shortening commute times and providing easy access from the south of Leeds. >>>>

>>> Stannah Lift Products Star In Spectacular New Entrance To Leeds Station The four escalators provide continuous vertical transportation for ambulant people. Those travellers with heavy luggage, child buggies or wheelchair-users are well provided for with two bespoke 13-person traction passenger lifts located just inside the entrance. The tight restraints on the site meant some of the features of the lift equipment had to be modified to achieve the design and vision without compromising safety. The escalators are to NR specification with some additional features bespoke to the Leeds station project. These features were based on the tight restraints of the site and the designers risk assessment required to mitigate those risks. This included special software so that all the machines operate to a special design philosophy when stopped in an emergency situation, including installing an additional stop button on each machine during mid travel. Bespoke manufacture of the machines at 35 degrees instead of the standard NR specification of 30 degrees, and the reduction of the speed of the machines from the standard NR .65m/s to .05m/s all result in safe, efficient travel within the constraints of an unusual and stunning building design. With no room for housing external controllers these became an integral part of the escalators. The lifts had restricted space so machine room-less traction equipment was installed to enable the largest capacity possible within the tight footprint of the new building. The new pedestrian entrance will be of great benefit to people living and working south of the river, and will open up new travel opportunities providing a further stimulus to redevelopment and expansion of the city centre, and will support the continued regeneration of the southern quarter of the city. Stannah continue to add to their portfolio of high-profile rail projects, helping Network Rail achieve their target of ‘Stepfree access’ across the rail network. The North West England and North Wales Stannah service branch, part of Stannah’s nationwide branch network, will be maintaining the lifts and escalators to ensure the safe flow of people and goods through this new entrance. www.stannahlifts.co.uk

neaco Provides Bespoke Walnut-Effect For New Medical Centre Oak is by far the most popular choice for neaco’s wood-effect handrails, but one project went against the grain with a bespoke walnut-effect specification at a new health and social care centre in Market Weighton, East Yorkshire. Five Affordable Remodelling Tips from Hayley Fenn, UK head of Granite Transformations

I love the capacity to refresh the look of the home with an affordable makeover, enabling you to explore new décor trends and personalise the living environment to suit family and lifestyle. I have already remodelled four different family homes, allowing us to move up the property ladder by adding value at every stage. Most experts agree that upgrading the kitchen and bathroom is the best way to add value to your home, often earning back most, if not all, of your outlay on fixtures and fittings. So here are a few tips on affordable remodelling techniques, based on my own projects and experience of running one of the country’s leading home makeover brands. Reface your old worktops – get an instant injection of quality and style, by overlaying your worn-out worktops with luxurious, slimline agglomerate surfaces in granite, quartz, recycled glass or porcelain. Kick out unfashionable colours and materials, without having to rip out existing countertops, and reface with fashionable white or offwhite surfaces or plump like I did for perennially popular black, with a hint of mirror fleck to catch the light. Change your cabinet doors – one good makeover trick is that you don’t have to tear out all those wall and base units, you can simply replace the cabinet doors and door fronts with made-to-measure fittings. Changing your doors and end panels to the latest high gloss acrylics, matt finishes and woodgrain effects, in a choice of contemporary or traditional fascia styles, will totally transform the look of your kitchen, without the expense of installing a new fitted kitchen. Remodel the bathroom – much the same makeover tips can be applied to remodelling a bathroom that’s seen better days. You can reface outdated tiles by overlaying with slim agglomerate or mosaics-on-a-mattress. Update your fixtures and accessories by fitting a new bathroom or walk-in shower, twin his’n’hers sinks and modern

brassware. Resurface vanity and storage units with water-resistant agglomerate and choose colour-themed floor tiles in the same material, to improve the look of your bathroom space. Retain the existing layout, though, to minimise plumbing or structural issues. Get creative with splashbacks – in the kitchen and bathroom, a splashback makes cleaning and hygiene easier, but can also add a visual statement. In the kitchen, extend agglomerate worktop materials up the adjoining walls, as upstands or half-height panels, for a fully coordinated look. Or use glass mosaic or subway tiles to create a unique textured backsplash that draws attention to your new décor. Then apply similar thinking to bath and washbasin panels, concealing discoloured tiles and grouting and creating a wipe-clean finish. Get down to hard flooring - high on the must-have agenda for householders is replacing carpet, vinyl, laminate and cork floorcoverings with more hardwearing materials for an upscale look. Hardwood flooring brings grace and elegance, but believe me it’s pretty expensive and vulnerable to scratches, dents and staining. So consider instead agglomerate flooring, made from the same high performance materials as our worktops, in medium or large format tiles or seamless sheets, for a gorgeous yet practical finish. The Healing Power Of Good Architecture This 194 patient psychiatric hospital in Slagelse Denmark is characterised by innovation and a desire to construct a first class complex which supports patient care and recovery. Some of the most influential elements in any hospital are obviously the ceilings because so many bed-ridden people spend so much time looking at them. Consequently, Troldtekt ceiling panels in natural wood colour, with integral LED light fittings, have been used throughout, reducing noise and ensuring pleasant acoustics as well as a healthy indoor climate. Pendock Boosts Retail Environment At Booths When an ambitious and enterprising grocer said in 1847 that his aim was “to sell the best goods he could buy in shops staffed with first-class assistants,” it is not perhaps surprising that this philosophy remains at the heart of a business that has survived two wars and several recessions. In fact, Booths has just relocated one of its stores to Poulton-le-Fylde – and the supermarket’s ethos to be the very best can be seen reflected in the selection of high quality column casings from Pendock for the interior fit-out. Ordinary steel stanchions to support the roof at Booths were simply not considered to offer the right impression and the main sub-contractor was tasked with sourcing columns that were functional, and attractive. The contractor immediately turned to Pendock Limited, knowing that the specialist supplier would come up with a solution that could offer both style and substance to the new store. Pendock supplied nine column casings to surround the standard structural steel sections: three oval in appearance and the other six circular. For continuity of style, both types are clad with attractive brushed finish aluminium bonded to the plywood casings up to one metre in height, while above this a RAL 7037 Dusty Grey shade of the company’s Mouse Laminate was specified, rising to ceiling height. A 15 mm shadow gap marks the junction while ‘top hat’ feature joints with an aluminium insert rise up the full length of the casings. The 150 mm high toe and 160 mm head collars are also finished in the Dusty Grey laminate. Decorative Casing Solutions – The Undercover Story

If it wasn’t for column casings and interior wall lining solutions, building interiors would be considerably less attractive environments. Yet, as they are designed to integrate as part of the fabric of a building, their importance can often be overlooked or taken for granted by the building’s occupants. Very few people stand back to admire a laminated plywood column casing at a school or brushed stainless steel wall cladding in a prestige office building, yet they are key elements in interior design and integral to the aesthetics of countless building environments. For column casings, at least, their role has been transformed from being a purely functional device for concealing structural steelwork to one of visual and decorative importance. From their initial use by a relatively small number of architects in the mid 1980s, column casings are now commonplace, with their aesthetic values and appeal being a key consideration alongside size and material during the specification process.

Portakabin Delivers Complete Interim Primary School In Just 14 Weeks To The Amazement Of Parents

B & K Structures provided the enhanced hybrid structures, consisting of glulam columns, glulam floor beams, wall cassettes and a cross laminated timber floor deck. The structure of the main building was curved and used Whitewood Spruce glulam beams, the visual winter garden used Larch glulam beams and encompassed an Ethylene Tetra Fluoro Ethylene (ETFE) along with a timber roof. This acted as a buffer zone as well as supporting the reflexive ventilation and heating strategy of the building. Photovoltaics were added to the roof, to improve carbon emissions and deliver renewable energy from a combined heat and power installation. The main lecture theatre consisted of glulam, steel nodes, cross laminated timber and curved wall cassettes that were assembled between the raking glulam columns and put together onsite rather than pre-constructed offsite, so that the curved effect could be achieved. The new building aimed to create a stimulating learning environment for students, reflecting the importance of university’s sustainability ethos. The carbon neutral build demonstrates renewable technologies in action, with the intention of achieving a BREEAM rating of Excellent. Stop Downloading And Start Streaming – Hot Water On Pay As You Go Author: Tony Gittings, Managing Director, Rinnai UK Storing hot water can cost a lot more money than using on-demand heating appliances. The fuel bills can add up to seriously significant sums of money in fuel bills in light commercial sites such as restaurants, retail outlets, schools catering, leisure centres or any one of the numerous other possible applications. Stored hot water, because of the design of the systems, can find it difficult, to cope with demand, as the recovery times can be longer than the period of time in use. The length of time this type of product has been on the market – plus inertia due to technology recognition has ensured that the industry, especially the installer and the specifier, think hot water storage systems are a sustainable option. But like with the way we watch TV, movies and play games – eventually certain technology is ‘leapfrogged’ by more sustainable technologies compare real time base running costs for a continuous flow hot water heating system - all day every day, like for like in specific applications - with those for a stored system, they will find they can save between 25-30% in energy bills over the lifetime of that appliance. The only time a user pays for energy use is when there is a demand, in other words the system will only burn gas when a tap or shower is being run. Just like streaming movies or TV shows! The end-user will be paying ‘as they go’- as opposed to paying for a store of hot water that has to be brought up to 60°C from cold then constantly maintained at that temperature 24/7 even when it is not being used. When all the water is used up, cold water will be heated and then stored until it is needed - meaning continual standby losses and continued re-circulation via a pump around the building, creating losses – all so the store avoids stratification systems. Stored hot water systems are almost always designed to over-capacity because of the difficulty in sizing to any real accuracy. For example, how much store for peak loads? Estimated lengths of shower time per person? How many people? How much water? So systems are often oversized in compensation and they use too much gas and too much storage – wasted money. Rinnai recently completed a detailed study and report on a project to replace a fractioned storage system providing hot water only, no heating, for a school’s annexe kitchen. The kitchen was not in continual daily use and was shut over weekends. A traditional storage system, which would have to heat and store water until it is needed, incurs cost and wastes valuable resources. But a continuous flow system would have no energy costs unless the units are being used – in other words, someone turns the tap ON and the water is heated. The water hasn’t been stored (and paid to be stored). A detailed plan showed costs on a like-for-like use would give payback for a continuous flow condensing unit system in a fraction over two years simply because of slashed running costs. The model illustrates that payback would be even sooner as in reality the system would actually use less gas. And continuous flow systems have many other significant advantages over stored. A condensing continuous flow water heater

guarantees a constant flow of safe hot water at a precise temperature that helps prevent Legionella proliferation or there are limited standing bodies of water and the system is constantly turned over. Continuous flow units can be operated via an easy to use built-in digital controller. Burners on these superior units use lean and rich technology allowing them to self-modulate down to an unbeatable 2.4 kW. In many commercial operations these heaters are the best of all possible options. Multiple condensing units can be linked via a manifold arrangement to provide a never-ending supply of heated water without costly storage in the most demanding situations. The units are available in internal and external appliance and suitable for natural gas or LPG. The unit also, cleverly, eliminates sudden changes in water temperature. The water temperature set via the digital temperature controller is the water temperature that is delivered. So, for example, in a commercial application, water can be guaranteed at 60 degrees C for ACOP L8. As a failsafe, the unit will automatically cut the heater off should the temperature rise by 3°C above the chosen set point. The condensing process delivers up to 95% thermal efficiency, which translates to significant energy savings when compared to standard on-demand water heaters. End users and specifiers, taking lifetime costs into the calculation, choose a product with quality engineering that uses only the best components available and is precision engineered, technically advanced and up to the job it needs to perform. “Simply replacing like with like, albeit a newer version may not be the best way to cut overall costs. Never buy on price alone even though the initial impression may be favourable. It really does pay to look beneath the surface and calculate all outgoings, not just the initial unit price,” says the study. www.rinnaiuk.com

The skills shortages within the industry have been widely reported and to overcome this challenge RCM implemented a recruitment drive to ensure the best candidate was identified for the role. Other challenges such as managing the synergy of supply chain and scheduling for ‘just in time deliveries’ were overcome by appointing specific project managers and the careful co-ordination of logistics of material deliveries onsite - enabling RCM to cut, clearly mark materials and schedule delivery ensuring the installations were clear, precise and streamlined for the customer. RCM’s First Board and Façade Cutting Machine - RCM have recently invested in a new state-of-the-art cutting machine. The benefit of the new machine has enabled boards and facades to be cut to size, minimising wastage and removing the need to cut onsite thus benefitting the client by saving time. Naturally the commissioning of a new machine encounters challenges such as maximising utilisation and efficiencies. Training was essential once the installation and testing phase was finalised to ensure all technicians have an indepth understanding of the machine and its capabilities to effectively use cutting forms to achieve economies of scale and minimise wastage – a benefit to both the customer and the environment. New High Temperature Heat Pump – The Right Response…

When Paul and Cathe Hazlewood decided to leave the agreeable urban living environment they had enjoyed for years in the centre of Oxford, looking for a new life in the country, they and Cathe’s brother and sisterin-law decided to head for deepest Dorset. The sale of their properties allowed them to shop around for an idyllic setting that they could remodel to suit the lifestyle choices they wanted to make with energy efficiency, ‘green’ living and utilising modern renewable technologies an important factor in their decisionmaking. The property they purchased allowed them both to enjoy large adjoining semi-detached properties, on a plot that included a large building that had been built and envisaged as a ‘business centre’ although it had never quite managed to be that, extensive woods and views across the Dorset countryside to die for. Paul and Cathe admit they were not renewable experts. Being intelligent people they had a grasp of what was available but knew only a little more than the average person when it came to what they could go with and how those options might fit together. They were convinced they would go with solar PV to generate their electricity – the properties they had chosen were blessed with south east and south west facing roofs – and were sizeable, allowing them to install a solar array that would more than meet their requirements. They thought they might possibly go for a biomass boiler option – they had the woods and a pretty much endless supply of fuel available so they wouldn’t necessarily be reliant on a supply of expensive wood pellets. But the deeper they got into planning their future the more they began to realise they needed to talk to someone. Someone they could trust who really understood renewables and how they might work together to provide the best energy solutions for them. They were recommended to talk to local experts Bublshop. After a lengthy chat they decided to start with the solar PV system and then rather than going with biomass, to look at the latest high temperature air source heat pump from LG as the source of their heating and hot water. The solar PV 18kW array would see them exporting around 50% of the electricity they generated. They were attracted by the idea of storing electricity if they could but decided to put of this extension of the system until the technology to do it was cheaper and more reliable. It’s on their agenda! The LG Therma V high temperature air source heat pumps – one for each home - have been a huge eye opener to the couple. They had got used over twenty years to heat on demand using a traditional boiler. They had got used to the ease of having gas through the mains. There was concern initially about how responsive the air source heat pumps would be to deliver heat and hot water when it was needed. But with the latest ‘high temp’ system from LG they say they shouldn’t have worried. But what about costs? “It’s difficult to be exact because we don’t have historical oil usage figures for the properties here – so we can’t measure or compare the costs but in our experience the savings over oil are in excess of 50% per year – and that’s impressive,” says Martin. Advanced Manufacturing In Sheffield

Factory 2050, the latest development within the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre in Sheffield, has a striking, ultra-modern appearance, partly thanks to an external Solar Shading solution from Levolux. The development comprises a main rotunda building and an adjoining rectangular building. Levolux was approached to develop a passive solar shading solution, to be applied to both buildings. Solar shading is essential to help maintain occupant comfort levels throughout the year without relying on expensive air conditioning systems. The solution proposed by Levolux comprises oval-shaped aluminium louvres, arranged horizontally between vertical aluminium carriers. Each louvre measures 60mm wide by 50mm thick and is formed from extruded aluminium components. Based on Levolux’s Infiniti Fin system, the oval-shaped louvres feature concealed fixings for a clean, uncompromised appearance. The tubular louvres, which are vertically stacked with a pitch of 200mm, have been custom engineered to suit the shape of each building. The main rotunda building has 8 metre high curtain walling, with full height glazing. To accommodate the building’s circular form, each louvre has been carefully curved. 20 rows of louvres run around the perimeter of the building at high level, accentuating the building’s unusual shape, which resembles the ‘Starship Enterprise’. In contrast, for the rectangular-shaped adjoining building, louvres have been incorporated into a continuous vertical stack, providing shade to glazed areas at high level. 18 rows of louvres combine to form a shading structure, measuring 15 metres in length by 3.5 metres in height. The louvres are mitred to accommodate an external corner of the building. The louvred section applied to the rotunda building is secured back to steel mullions using Levolux’s Triniti® brackets. These incorporate a unique and highly effective thermal break which minimises the risk of cold bridging and virtually eliminates any problems associated with interstitial condensation. They also help to reduce noise transmission through the building envelope. Rinnai Is Really Motoring Aboard The Bedroam Bus Rinnai, the leading continuous flow gas fired water heater manufacturer, has seen its products installed in numerous sites with unusual applications but one project has pushed the boundaries of the unusual. The project is so unusual it caught the eye of Channel 4’s ‘Amazing Spaces’ presented by George Clarke and the Rinnai product was one of the stars of the show. ‘Bedroam’ is the brainchild of Ollie Kemp, a farmer, motor racing competitor and enthusiast from Melbourne, Yorkshire. He wasn’t happy with the lack of onsite accommodation at events that would allow competitors to stay close to their expensive and irreplaceable racing gear. The constructive result of this dissatisfaction is the Bedroam bus, complete with 18 Japanese-style pod bedrooms. As well as using it himself for motorsport meets, Bedroam is available to hire. The Bedroam has two fully-equipped bathrooms with shower, toilet and sink. Sinks and showers are supplied with safe temperature controlled hot water from Rinnai Infinity LPG water heaters, complete with MC91 controller, via motion sensor-operated taps. Two Rinnai Infinity 17e external units fitted to the back of the bus drawing water from a bespoke designed tank. “I first saw Rinnai units in operation at an event where there were luxury mobile showers powered by Rinnai units. On my return, I researched Rinnai online and spoke to my friend Andy, a registered Gas Safe engineer also based in Melbourne, who then ordered and undertook the installation. Andy Dixon, who runs his own plumbing and heating service, explains: “The boilers had to go on the back of the bus as Ollie was struggling to find enough space inside. As the bus has an air con system, I had already put a cooling radiator off the back so the two Rinnai units sat very handily behind that simply hung on a metal grid attached to the back of the bus. “Piping was easy. I used plastic pipework for both hot and cold outlets running to a little plant room where the back seats of the bus were originally which is directly beneath the bathrooms from where the water is pumped to the header tank via a small 12V. Rinnai’s technical guys were very helpful when I phoned them initially for some advice and installation of the units was really easy. SE Controls Feels The Power With Bristol’s Electricity House Development Electricity House, Crest Nicholson Homes’ stylish city centre apartment development in Bristol is using an advanced smoke ventilation system from leading smoke and natural ventilation specialist, SE Controls, to help keep residents safe if a fire should occur. Passivhaus Design Maintains Indoor Environment Using Omnie MVHR

With less than 400 PassivHaus certified properties so far completed across the UK, the ultra-low energy standard from Germany can still be viewed as nascent in this country, though there are many compliant components and technologies available to assist in these designs: such as the mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system offered by Omnie. The highly efficient Passive house certified CA550 heat recover unit (HRU) has in fact just been installed as a crucial element to the building services within a private residential property under construction near Tiverton in Devon. The two storey 200 square metre structure replaces an earlier dwelling on the Bampton site where Gale & Snowden is the specialist architectural consultant and passive house designer responsible for the specification process. In addition to the ducted central ventilation system, which will constantly harvest warmth from extracted stale air, the new home uses a holistic set of measures in order to keep energy usage within the tightly controlled PassivHaus parameters. These include a super-insulated building envelope, use of thermal mass to mitigate extremes of temperature and standards of airtightness so exacting as to restrict air changes to below 0.6 per hour. The latter figure, set by the PassivHaus Institute, is so low that it would lead to problems of stale, moisture laden air becoming trapped in the living spaces, with the possibility of it causing condensation, damp and damage to the fabric of the building or even “sick building syndrome” which adversely affects the health of the occupants. Looking For A Whitewashed Floor?

Bona White is a new wood floor primer designed to produce an on-trend bleached look when used in conjunction with a Bona polyurethane lacquer. The intensity of ‘whiteness’ is dependent on how many coats are applied. This client wanted a whitewashed look to their original Victorian floor boards to tie in with the soft greys of the kitchen. This was achieved by the application of two coats of Bona White under two coats of Bona Traffic HD lacquer. The works were part of a complete renovation of a Victorian town house in Bath and were carried out by Bona Certified Contractor, TWF Bath Ltd, who specialise in the restoration and fitting of traditional wood floors. Before treatment, the TWF team filled large gaps using reclaimed pine wedges and then sanded the floor to 100 grit abrasives. Smaller gaps were filled using Bona Mix & Fill, which is mixed with sanding dust from the floor to ensure the filled areas blend in with the rest of the surface. The floor was then sanded using 120 grit abrasives before the application of the first coat of Bona White. The floor was then abraded using a Bona Scrad Pad to remove any grain raising from the surface before the application of the second coat.

Achieving The Impossible With Sika Sarnafil

In a complex new build roofing project that was deemed almost impossible, Contour Roofing stepped up to the challenge with a Sika Sarnafil membrane to achieve truly stunning results. 32 Ewart Grove, a Paul Simon Homes residential development minutes from Wood Green tube station, required a high-performance roof with a striking aesthetic result to match the contemporary luxury flats within. Located in a prominent position at a fork in a road, the roof can be seen when travelling up to the building, as well as from the upper floors of surrounding buildings. With its extremely intricate design, including two barrel roofs and a large, unique triangulated tower at the front, the project presented a real challenge. Originally the specification for the 400sq m area called for a metal roof but the cost implications of this meant that another solution was needed, and fast. It was thought that such a complex roof design could not be done, especially with the time and budget available. However Jonathan Woods, director at Contour Roofing, alongside senior contracts manager, Lee Clift, sought to prove that the roof could indeed be covered using a high quality single ply membrane, if the correct product and level of expertise were applied. Jonathan and Lee met with the architect and the director of Paul Simon Homes to discuss amending the roofing specification. with Sika Sarnafil we quickly presented a new bespoke specification; an adhered system using Sarnafil G41015ELF Lead Grey with a polyester fleece backing as the main roof sheet for a flawless result and Sarnafil G41015EL Lead Grey for all the detail work flashings.” The installation was very challenging, with various shapes, details, upstands and intricate sections to cover. Lee added: “Working closely with the carpenter, the plywood deck had to be spot on to make sure the membrane could be laid smartly and correctly. Absolute attention to detail and skill were required to make sure the membrane was flush with the substrate below. Décor profiles were used to imitate the standing seams of a metal roof, which is what the original designs had envisaged. The project really took installation to new frontiers and pushed the boundaries of what can be achieved in roofing.” Sikalastic was used for the guttering when the space was just too tight for single ply, demonstrating the compatibility between Sika’s various roofing products. Both the Sika Sarnafil and Sika Liquid Plastics systems were awarded a 20 year guarantee. Repairs, Refurbishment And Water Ingress By The Sea

Stuart Hicks, from cold liquid-applied wet-on-wet waterproofing specialist, Kemper System, discusses the problems caused by a failed waterproofing system at a luxury residential development near Brighton and outlines the project undertaken to replace it The Grand Ocean Hotel in Saltdean, near Brighton, first opened on a four-acre site in 1938. Now the central building from which a development of luxury apartments takes its name, this costal landmark has had a varied history, being acquired by holiday camp pioneer, Billy Butlin in 1953. It remained open as a hotel until 2005 when planning permission was granted to convert it into luxury apartments with an additional four new build apartment blocks. Problems with the integrity of the originally specified waterproofing system became apparent even before refurbishment of the main hotel building had been completed, leading to a replacement roofing system. The existing hotel building and the four new builds are of a flat roof design and the architect had specified a liquid waterproofing membrane to maintain the listed building’s appearance while providing a neat finish.

Once the new waterproofing system was in place, the insulation, slabs and green roof medium that had been removed to access the failed waterproofing membrane were then reinstated to complete the roof. The build-up for each of the new builds’ terraces was the same as the main roof and the same process and materials were used. For the roof and balconies of the former hotel building, however, the damage caused by the failed waterproofing membrane was even more significant because the original roof build-up was not inverted. The roofing contractor tackled the balconies first and had to strip out the entire roof build-up of paving slabs, waterproofing membrane and insulation. Here, not only had the originally specified membrane failed but the insulation below it had begun to rot too. The concrete substrate was allowed to dry on each balcony before the new waterproofing could be installed. The build-up for each balcony was then reinstated as an inverted warm roof.

The system originally selected was not robust enough to adhere seamlessly to both the roof and all upstands and outlets as a permanently elastic, monolithic membrane. The development’s coastal location also required a more durable and flexible membrane that could withstand a moist and salty atmosphere and high UV levels. The roofing contractor turned to a cold-applied wet-on-wet waterproofing system that the company had used on a wide variety of construction projects.

The same primer, resin and fleece waterproofing system was used for the balconies of the refurbished hotel as for the new build apartment blocks and the membrane was allowed to cure before new insulation and paving slabs or decking were installed. The installation team then moved onto the former hotel roof, which comprises five ‘fingers’ with a central core. Water ingress around the roof outlets where the failed membrane had not bonded properly meant that the recently installed warm roof insulation was already sodden and the roof had to be stripped back to the vapour barrier.

The decision was taken to install the replacement waterproofing system as an overlay onto the existing failed membrane wherever possible. Where an overlay wasn’t viable, the contractor stripped out the existing and replaced it with the new flexible liquid membrane. The existing roof build up for the new build apartment blocks was an inverted roof with the originally specified membrane installed beneath the insulation.

To aid water run-off in the future, a tapered insulation scheme was designed which introduced a slight pitch to each roof section. These pre-primed sections were then fixed to the substrate and joint sealed before application of the new waterproofing membrane began. CMS Delivers For Engineering Giant’s New Facility

CMS Window Systems has played a key role in the manufacture and installation of thermally-efficient curtain walling, windows and doors for Emerson Process Management’s new facility at the new D2 business park, Aberdeen. Emerson is one of the world’s foremost names in engineering services across a wide range of industrial and commercial markets, and places high value on the efficiency and integrity of its staff, operations and facilities. Efficiency, therefore, was a high priority when Emerson Process Management – a branch of the company which focuses on developing problem-solving technologies and services for industrial businesses – acquired a site at the D2 business park in Dyce, Aberdeen to support its work with the North Sea oil and gas industry. CMS was appointed by main contractor Bowmer & Kirkland to design, manufacture and install curtain walling, windows and doors for the facility. The £20 million development, built to replace Emerson’s existing Aberdeen headquarters in nearby Kirkhill, comprises 2,600m2 of office space, as well as a 3,065m2 service centre with meeting facilities and a customer collaboration suite, and can accommodate up to 200 Emerson personnel. Reflecting this code of efficiency, the facility adheres to exacting thermal performance standards and complying with the latest requirements of current building regulations. With site development overseen by Miller and construction completed by Bowmer & Kirkland, work on Emerson’s new Aberdeen premises began in June 2014, with CMS joining the project in February 2015. The solutions delivered by CMS were chosen to enhance the efficiency of the building’s envelope, reducing heat transfer while allowing the entry of natural light. VS-1 Curtain Walling Part Of Cutting Edge Vision For Hiscox’s York Offices

A new structural glazing system from GLASSOLUTIONS has been specified for Hiscox’s new landmark underwriting and customer experience centre in York, part of the insurance company’s £19 million investment to create its largest office outside London. The VS-1 mullion-only system from GLASSOLUTIONS eliminates the need for horizontal framing members, enabling Make Architects to achieve the clean viewing lines on the curved atrium screen which forms a key feature of the new building. Make Architects’ brief was to design a bespoke office which reflects the character of the Hiscox business and delivers high-quality contemporary design within York’s rich architectural heritage. Located adjacent to the Grade II* listed early-17th Century Black Swan public house, The Hiscox Building will establish a new focal point for the Hungate area of the city. The spectacular four-storey building will house up to 500 employees in a dynamic working environment with open, flexible floor space. The light airy interior effect is created by the extensive use of the VS-1 curtain walling. This combines with a cantilevered concrete frame and undulating woven brickwork façade to provide a workspace which fosters creativity and collaboration. Work on site began in 2014. UK-based GLASSOLUTIONS, part of the international Saint-Gobain Group, supplied and installed the curtain walling structure for main contractor BAM Construction as part of a £1.8 million contract. VS-1, which has also been used successfully on the Sky Believe in Better building in London, is a new type of curtain wall – a mullion only system where the glass is held away from the mullion so the glass wall visually ‘floats’. In this project, the mullions are fixed back directly to primary structural columns. VS-1’s highly engineered simplicity delivers remarkable aesthetics for architects, developers and building owners. It is the only curtain wall system where the floating glass façade is held away from the mullion without the use of obtrusive bolt fixings or transoms.

Its relative simplicity reduces risk of component failure, improves constructability and reduces costs of programme delays in both construction and postconstruction phases. The installation at The Hiscox Building in York features Wicona curtain walling to the punch hole windows and louvres, roof terrace curtain wall, a bespoke structurally bonded rooflight and GLASSOLUTIONS’ patented VS-1 glazing system to form the main atria screen and terrace parapet. The VS-1 system façade is articulated with both convex and concave curved insulated units, the largest of which is 2.0m wide x 4.2m high. The argon filled laminated heat strengthened units have high performance coatings to limit solar gain, achieving g-values as low as 0.34. To meet internal thermal comfort targets, glass units with centre pane u-values of 1.1 W/m2K have been used. Combined with the thermally efficient frames, this creates screens with weighted average U-values of 1.3 W/m2K. Chapter House Of St Paul’s Cathedral Becomes A More Ecologically Efficient Office Grade II* Listed Chapter House is a stunning building neighbouring the iconic St Paul’s Cathedral; it was built between 1712-1714 and designed by Christopher Wren and his son. The building was initially used as accommodation for the Dean and other members of the Chapter. However, after suffering severe damage during the Second World War, it was refurbished into offices, and has since been viewed as the administrative heart of the Cathedral. Recently Chapter House underwent a major refurbishment to bring it up to modern and ecological office standards. A key requirement was to improve the thermal insulation throughout the building, retaining the buildings heat and reducing energy bills. As a specialist in the design, manufacture and installation of secondary glazing, Selectaglaze was specified as its tested products can reduce heat loss by up to 50%. This can be achieved by the bespoke fitting of the secondary glazing alongside the use of high performance seals. Iconic Art Centre’s Winning Performance With Crittall Windows

New fenestration for an iconic listed arts centre at the University of Sussex presented a particular challenge for architects RH Partnership but the successful outcome has been achieved thanks to close collaboration with steel window experts Crittall. The University’s Attenborough Centre for Creative Arts (ACCA) was designed in the 1960s by Sir Basil Spence and subsequently listed Grade 2* by English Heritage. The building’s curved brick exterior is punctuated at ground floor level by steel windows and doors that, along with the rest of the structure, had fallen into disrepair. Extensive consultation was undertaken by the Brightonbased architectural practice with English Heritage (now Historic England) and Brighton & Hove City Council’s conservation team for the most acceptable solution to replace the existing metal framed, single glazed windows and doors. “RH Partnership have worked very closely with Crittall Windows to reproduce the patterns and profiles using W20 sections and to incorporate double glazed units,” says architect David Sweeney. “With large areas of glazing in the front-of-house spaces, the capability to add slim line double glazed units has drastically improved the thermal performance of this building.” Solar control glass has also been added to particular south and east facing windows so as to reduce overheating during summertime and natural ventilation has been improved by an increase in openable windows and the introduction of trickle vents.

The complete refurbishment of the building, including a main auditorium with a flexible 350 seating arrangement, exhibition spaces, four differently-sized studios and teaching rooms and the development of an area beneath the auditorium to provide 33% more usable space than was envisaged in the original design, has provided the University with a cultural flagship structure. Says David Sweeney: “Working on a Sir Basil Spence, Grade 2* Listed Building such as this can be a real challenge. The solution provided by Crittall Windows has been very successful both in terms of its performance and the appearance of this 1969 iconic building.” Also on the University campus a second Sir Basil Spence, Grade 2* listed structure, the Chichester 1 building, is undergoing refurbishment and, once again, Crittall products – the Corporate W20 and Corporate 2000 windows – have been specified. A Great Picture Inside And Out Following the complex extension and conversion of an existing office block in London’s Crouch End, a new Picturehouse Cinema has been created by Panter Hudspith Architects. The project forms part of a wider initiative within the borough of Haringey, designed to re-establish the area as one of London’s cultural and arts centres. The unique style of this four-screen cinema has attracted much interest, not only because of the dramatic transformation but also because of its new external elevation. Here, Panter Hudspith Architects have replaced the original curtain wall and specified Kalwall. Unusually, this unique translucent cladding is fitted with a tight 150mm wide grid, known as Verti-Kal, which not only serves to emphasise height but is the first of its type in the UK. On this scheme the Kalwall panels also insulate to a U-value of 0.78. Unlike conventional glazing, Kalwall eliminates shadows and glare and the stark contrasts of light and shade. The system also enhances simplicity by eliminating the need for blinds, curtains or solar control. Even on cloudy days, the interior is bathed with natural daylight, which means less artificial lighting and, because Kalwall is highly insulating, energy costs are reduced. Apart from being specified for all types of new build project, Kalwall is increasingly used for the refurbishment of cladding or rooflights on aged buildings. Cladding Choice Was No Puzzle For Jigsaw Building

Selecting a cladding material for the new Jigsaw Building at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital presented no puzzle for architects Stride Treglown. Trespa® Meteon® was chosen to provide a ventilated facade, scoring on appearance and cost, as well as contributing to energy efficiency. The two-storey building, which was opened last September, has provided the hospital with a 21,000 sq.ft. women’s health centre. The facilities now available include oncology, haematology, breast and pregnancy care, along with cancer and blood disorder treatment, as well as administrative offices. The Royal Bournemouth Hospital’s Jigsaw charity raised funding in support of the £5.7 million building project, giving its name to the state-of-the-art-care centre. The architects wished to ensure that, both inside and out, the building created a friendly environment where patients could feel at ease despite the tensions aroused by medical procedures. The use of timber effect materials and complementing colours helps provide a relaxing, domestic feel despite a highly clinical finish. The building is wrapped in variegated tones of Trespa Meteon® Wood Decors cladding on the first floor, punctured with ribbon windows, white brick to the ground floor and an undulated roof form to conceal roof top plant. ®

“Stride Treglown wanted to use a material that was ‘natural’ in appearance, but that stood out from the existing hospital palette of materials,” says architect Jessica Ellis. “We generally try and use materials with a ‘natural’ appearance where possible within healthcare environments as they can provide calming spaces for patients and staff.”

It was also important for the client that the building was as low maintenance and as energy efficient as possible and the 600sq. metres of Trespa® Meteon® cladding contributed to this within the tight budget available for the project. In total, seven timber effect grains and colours from the Trespa® Meteon® range were supplied. Stride Treglown varied the mix of these along the main elevations providing visual interest but also breaking up the appearance of the large scale elevations. By specifying the matt effect panels – all of which were new additions to the Trespa® Meteon® range when the project was designed – the building achieves a more natural timber appearance in direct sunlight as there is a reduced glare from the matt texture. “This project proves that design does not need to be expensive. Using a variety of colours and narrow panels has added no extra cost. It also proves that a surface fixing does not detract from the design,” said Simon Vicary, Trespa’s Regional Sales Manager. Trespa® Meteon® is a decorative high-pressure compact laminate (HPL) with an integral surface manufactured using the company’s unique in-house technologies; Electron Beam Curing (EBC) and Dry Forming (DF). Pendock Columns And Wall Panels Distinguish Staff Dining At BG Group The refurbishment of the main staff restaurant within the Reading headquarters of BG Group has included the specification of three large diameter, bespoke column casings and some 40 matching wall panels, all supplied by encasement specialist, Pendock. The work within the ground floor eatery has been carried out by Middlesex based W. & L. Interiors. The column casings were delivered as pre-shaped ovoid half panels, with male and female edge joints to facilitate site assembly; circumferential to the building’s structural stanchions. In accordance with the striking design statement for the restaurant, both the columns and the wall panels display the strong horizontal striping of the Formica Ashen Ribbonwood. The panels were mainly produced in 2500 mm lengths and three heights to cover the wall in a staggered pattern, while each column rises 2645 mm in height to the underside of the suspended ceiling. As a specialist fit-out contractor working across several sectors in the London region and the business corridor to the west, W. & L. is fully familiar with Pendock’s capabilities. Dean West, who supervised the project for W. & L. confirmed: “This was a very prestigious project for BG Group where a wall cladding and column finish were specified and actually Pendock is the first name that comes up when anyone considers column casings. Refurbished Building Warmed By Omnie Underfloor Heating

A owner of a dwelling in Hampshire/West Sussex has completed the transformation of one of its earliest buildings by installing underfloor heating, using two of the ranges manufactured and distributed by Exeter based Timóleon Limited. The one time pigsty, located not far from Midhurst, derelict for a time time, before work began on repairing the roof and making the stone-built structure habitable. Today the old agricultural building provides care and accommodation for elderly residents with a day room on the first floor, along with a shower room and other facilities. Being keen to be green, as well as to minimize its running costs, the client has chosen to install an air source heat pump to supply the property’s space heating and domestic hot water, with the underfloor heating systems – part of the Omnie range - being installed by Agincourt Contractors from Petersfield. The Omnie’s FoilBoard floating floor system was chosen for installation across the ground floor slab while Omnie’s LowBoard is used upstairs. The project also made use of Omnie’s precisely engineered five port manifolds to feed the various zones on both the

ground and first floors. The total pipe length installed into the FoilBoard and LowBoard profiles on each of the two floors was approaching 535 metres. Not only do the various Omnie systems - which also includes one for retrofitting between timber floor joists – offer comfort and convenience, but underfloor heating is also a proven way of bringing the optimum performance from renewable technologies, particularly air and ground source heat pumps. Marmox Heraklith Panels Help Restore Post War Church Hundreds of square metres of thermo-acoustic woodwool boards made by Heraklith and supplied by by Marmox have been employed in the restoration of a significant church building, located in East London, following weather damage. St. Paul’s Church, Bow Common has been described as the most significant church built in Britain since the Second World War, having been completed in 1960 to the designs of architect, Robert Maguire, along with interior designer, Keith Murray. Having celebrated the 50th anniversary of its consecration in 2010 – a relatively short time-span in ecclesiastical terms – water ingress led to a sudden and serious collapse of some of the existing woodwool ceiling panels during 2013. The area beneath the lantern was cordoned off immediately and services moved westward into a safe-zone, so there were never any questions that the building could not be used. Now though, a comprehensive repair contract carried out by Noble & Taylor, Ongar, has been completed with significant funding by the Heritage Lottery Fund. During the painstaking work a total of 135 standard Heraklith panels were consumed by Noble & Taylor’s craftsmen: being readily cut to shape on site and decorated as desired by the consultants to match as closely as possible the original decorative scheme. Heraklith panels are produced from natural timber fibres to provide a durable and versatile wood wool insulation. They are simple to cut and fix with conventional tools. www.marmox.co.uk

New RECYFIX® MONOTEC Drains Car Park At The New Travelodge Weston Super Mare

A new Travelodge in Weston Super Mare, Somerset has opened its doors to guests in March 2016. The hotel is located on Beaufighter Road, some three miles from the Grand Pier and includes a newly laid asphalted main car park with 47 spaces drained by a 60 metre run of RECYFIX® MONOTEC, Hauraton’s new high capacity channel system. Hauraton Limited introduced the RECYFIX® MONOTEC, their new high capacity channel system in January, the new Travelodge being the first installation of the system in the United Kingdom. The MONOTEC channels installed in the Travelodge car park have a nominal grating width of 100mm, an overall height of 380mm and are suitable for a loading category of up to Class D400. The channels provide a cross-section of 355.5cm2 and have a high attenuation volume. The RECYFIX® MONOTEC one metre long channel component is of a sturdy monolithic design where the HEELSAFE grating and the tongue and groove linking system are integral to the channel moulding. The whole unit is made of tough, virtually unbreakable polypropylene (PP) formulated to be very resistant to daily temperature fluctuations from frost conditions to strong sunlight, including the Ultra Violet (UV) spectrum. PP is naturally resistant to de-icing salt. Complying with the requirements of EN 1433, the PP is given its UV resistance by adding just sufficient carbon black as a stabiliser so that the structural strength of the material is unaffected and a consistent appearance is maintained. The front asphalted car park, with 15 spaces, at the new Travelodge is drained with over 40 metres of RECYFIX® PRO 100 channels fitted with Hauraton’s FIBRETEC® Class C250, HEELSAFE gratings which have a similar appearance of the MONOTEC grating. slot openings where the moulded bars have slightly raised triangular bosses along their outside edges. As well as providing an elegant appearance, this ensures surface water is directed into the slots helping eliminate any cross-flow over the grating which helps optimise the channels attenuation volume. It was particularly pleasing this first installation of our tough RECYFIX® MONOTEC channels here in the UK went so well, with a maximum weight of 10.4kg the contractor found the channels supplied, easy to handle and install with no breakages reported during the installation process. Continuous Ribbon Balconies Require Effective Thermal Insulation

The Chiswick Point development, at Bollo Lane, in West London, is a ยฃ20m contemporary mixed-use residential scheme. The apartments are either south facing single aspect, or dual aspect with some even enjoying a triple aspect. A sustainable approach was important, with all of the units designed to meet Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes, and the Lifetime Homes code. Constructed in two blocks of six and nine storeys, the frame is mainly reinforced concrete, with the concrete frame floors and cladding providing thermal mass, which absorbs energy and slowly releases it to help reduce temperature fluctuations. Long continuous ribbon balconies provide solar shading to the two blocks and provide the residents with a very pleasant outlook across the London Wildlife Trust nature reserve at the rear of the development. The continuous balconies are a major feature of the scheme and with several hundred metres of them winding across the two blocks, effective thermal insulation was imperative if thermal bridging is to be avoided. To minimise any condensation problems and subsequent mould growth as a result, plus the avoidance of thermal outflow, Schรถck Isokorb type K heat-insulating loadbearing elements are installed at various strategic positions along the large expanse of balconies. The Isokorb type K provides high thermal resistance by using stainless steel bars to act as tension and shear reinforcement, plus high-strength HTE pressure bearing modules. Research at the Oxford Institute for Sustainable Development (OISD) at Oxford Brookes University shows

that as a result of airtightness and fabric U-values being improved in UK building, thermal bridge heat losses are responsible for an increasing percentage of the overall building heat loss. It is common for thermal bridges to account for 20% - 30% heat loss in multi-residential units (as calculated by thermal modelling) and balcony connections can be a major contributor to the thermal bridge heat loss if effective thermal isolation is not included in the design. Schรถck offers a number of highly effective solutions to various thermal bridging situations. In addition to concrete-to-concrete capability, the Isokorb range provides totally verifiable solutions for concrete-to-steel, steel-to-steel and even a maintenance free alternative to wrapped parapets. All solutions meet full compliance with the relevant UK building regulations and offer BBA Certification and LABC Registration. The requirement that the temperature factor used to indicate condensation risk (the fRsi value), in residential buildings, must be equal to or greater than 0.75 is comfortably met by incorporating the Isokorb. It also complies with the Government Standard Assessment Procedure, SAP 2012, concerning CO2 emissions from buildings and respectively heat losses through nonrepeating thermal bridges. The lambda values of the Isokorb enable energy loss to be reduced by as much as 84% to 91% in various connective situations. www.schoeck.co.uk
