ACPV ARCHITECTS Designs New Rolex Boutique In Milan
ACPV ARCHITECTS Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel reveals the interiors of Rolex’s new boutique in Milan’s central Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. The project for the new store consists of an extensive restoration of a prime location in the world-renown shopping gallery built in neo-Renaissance style. Since its inauguration in 1867, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II has been an important meeting place, called ‘il Salotto di Milano’, for its rich offer of leisure activities, retail and dining destinations. 6

The restoration works preserve the store’s façade, its structural integrity and original volumes, redeveloping the character of the historic location. “The new Rolex store in the very heart of Milan defines a new language for retail space design that’s based on a selection of refined materials and furniture, and an appreciation for traditional Italian craftsmanship,” architect Antonio Citterio, Chairman of ACPV ARCHITECTS, says. ACPV ARCHITECTS’ design was inspired by the original design details of the space, reviving its Milanese atmosphere in a contemporary key. The spaces have been designed to guide customers through a retail experience tailored to customer needs. Following an in-depth study of the spaces’ previous designs, the store’s color scheme and material selection achieve a synthesis between the historic value of the space and the identity of the Rolex brand. (cont...) The store comprises three levels: a ground floor that welcomes customers, a mezzanine level for sales, and an exclusive upper floor. The ground floor is conceived as an extension of the Galleria that produces a seamless continuity with the patterns, geometries, and Venetian terrazzo flooring of the store’s immediate surroundings. The store’s welcome area features iconic pieces from the brand in display cases and tables, and on double- height briarwood shelving that visually connects the ground floor with the mezzanine level. The ground floor is characterized by its travertine walls and illuminated by a blown glass chandelier, custom-designed in collaboration with Metis Lighting, with a diamond-shaped rhombus motif that pays homage to Milanese design traditions. The sale area of the mezzanine floor evokes the atmosphere of a Milanese salon that displays the brand’s contemporary creations. The design of the upper floor preserves the distinct identities that characterized the ceiling through different time periods, while the flooring’s original patterned Venetian terrazzo flooring has been revived, thanks to the meticulous restoration works by Laboratorio Morseletto.

The store’s interiors highlight the value of Italian craftsmanship and historical manufacturing processes rooted in local design traditions. While the staircase that connects all floors features terrazzo flooring, the walnut wall paneling – the product of exquisite woodworking techniques – highlights the vertical dimensions of the space. The store’s design encourages people to experience the space from the inside by opening a clear sightline from the outside, through the display areas to the store back’s elevator. Designed with generous spatial proportions and refined details, the so-called ‘moving room’ elevator functions as a unique display area that carries customers between floors. www.acpvarchitects.com

Harley Haddow Completes Vital Renovation Work On Prestigious V&A Photography Centre Multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy Harley Haddow has completed work on the second phase of a unique project at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A). Situated in South Kensington in one of the world’s most recognisable historic buildings, the Photography Centre opened to the public last month. It is part of the V&A’s FuturePlan programme, a designled initiative which aims to continually reinvent the V&A. Harley Haddow was awarded the project in 2019 to provide Structural Engineering and Mechanical, Electrical and Energy Engineering design services, along with a combination of partners involved in the various stages of the project. The purpose of the project was to create a state-of-theart international Photography Centre at the V&A which would improve public understanding of the history of photography and its techniques. This second phase of the Photography Centre refurbishment took a heritage first approach which retained original features of the Grade I listed building and saw the sensitive introduction of new services and structure into the existing six gallery spaces which were refurbished. A major part of Harley Haddow’s involvement was the complete replacement and upgrade of all existing mechanical and electrical systems serving the Tapestry Gallery, the new Photography Galleries (95-97) and the Gallery 98 reference library. This included the introduction of a new rooftop plant platform and acoustic screen above the existing tapestry gallery and new roof structures above galleries 96-99 to replace the existing roof lanterns and introduce new lead clad roof structures with integrated services. In Gallery 98 a new cantilever steel structure was designed to provide accommodation for the new reference library which introduces a new mezzanine structure and allows bookshelves to be hung from the walls rather than taking support from the existing gallery floor. The new mezzanine incorporates brass balustrades which includes detailed coordination with the joinery and the structure. www.harleyhaddow.com

SERC Fire Engineering Apprentice Of The Year 2023 Christopher Orr, an apprentice from Northern Irelands, South Eastern Regional College (SERC) has beaten off competition to lift the Nittan Shield Fire Engineering Apprentice of the Year title for 2023. Christopher (27), from Lisburn, employed by Crane Communications, successfully achieved the EAL Level 3 Fire & Security Apprenticeship NI at SERC’s Lisburn Campus. SERC Fire and Security Lecturers, Christopher Patterson and Robin Hamill, said: “This Award reflects performance throughout his 4-years, both at work and in the College through coursework and assignments. Christopher has proved himself to be an outstanding apprentice and his efforts and achievements are recognised with this Award.” Bobby Nixon, Sales Manager, Nittan Europe Ltd, presented the award and said, “Nittan are proud to be associated with the SERC Apprentice of the Year, and I am very happy to present Christopher with the Nittan Shield Award for 2023. “As a manufacturer, we understand there is a direct relationship between engineer training and customer satisfaction. We fully support the work undertaken at SERC, and our Elite Partner for Northern Ireland, Solutions for Systems, who take the time to train and nurture these apprentices. New Marmox Fireboard Offers Ideal EWI And IWI Substrate Building on the broad benefits of its widely specified Multiboard, insulation manufacturer Marmox has introduced the highly versatile Fireboard into its range for both internal and external wall insulation (IWI/EWI) applications. Make Better Choices On World Soil Day, Says Boughton
On World Soil Day in December, leading topsoil and growing media supplier, Boughton called on landscapers, specifiers and garden designers to take time to consider the benefits of natural soils. Boughton – a firm advocate for single-source natural ‘as dug’ topsoil – is keen to use this significant day to highlight the impact using natural topsoil and sourcing products sustainably can have on both your landscaping projects and the environment. As World Soil Day focuses on soil health and awareness in order to maintain diverse ecosystems, Boughton wants to remind the industry about the significant benefits of using a natural soil. Not only do these soils have good body and great moisture retention qualities – ideal for modern landscaping projects, given predictions of water shortages in the future – but Boughton soils also have a low pH, high organic content and boast both existing and developing organism biomass. The latter is a huge plus for planting schemes, considering the vital role microbial activity plays in the development and growth of flora within a soil. In fact, some natural topsoils have been establishing themselves for thousands of years, allowing their nutrient balance time to level out and cycle on a natural rhythm. This means they can provide host plants with accessible nutrients quickly, once installed. There are a number of enormous advantages to using sustainably sourced natural soils, which is why Boughton has supplied its products to several high-profile construction and landscaping projects, including the redevelopment of Battersea Power Station, which was awarded the title of ‘Grand Award Winner’ at the recent BALI National Landscape Awards. The team behind the gardens, Willerby, also received the Principal Award win within the ‘Regeneration Scheme - Over £500k’ category for the second phase of the roof garden. Within these gardens, Boughton’s IN1 substrate was selected to support the scheme due to its ability to support larger plants and to be installed at depths from 100 – 500cm, thanks to its sandy texture.

Additionally, Boughton’s IN1 substrate offers significant moisture retention qualities, making it the perfect choice when so many plants are vying for attention within this three-hectare site. IN1 from Boughton continues to meet and exceed all G.R.O guidelines. Elsewhere Boughton’s Lightweight Substrate was used to provide growing media where weight loading for the green roof needed to be lighter than traditional green roof schemes, whilst Rootzone completed the offering. Supplied as a ready-mixed solution, Rootzone provided better planting conditions throughout the scheme.
In doing so, BLRG offers increased water storage performance, and improved water quality benefits. Boughton’s new BLRG is the perfect choice for those planting schemes that prefer a freer draining substance, but one that is sometimes saturated.
Boughton supplies a range of natural topsoils to suit a wide variety of applications and projects. The Serpent has no inner liner to rupture or block, and even when the hose is bent to an acute angle, the full bore is maintained, resulting in perfect flow and much easier installation. The pressure rating and flexibility of the product has been successfully tested for leakage and pressure to BS EN ISO 1086:2023 which specifies a maximum test pressure of 31.5 BAR and a leak test of 1.5 times that pressure. It’s NSF Regulation-4 approved for use with potable water and uses only WRAS approved materials, it comes in white and has a wipe clean outer cover. It can be bent and re-bent – it won’t split or snap. The fittings at either end – and there are a wide selection of these, both sizes and end connections - are stainless steel and easy to tighten and loosen. Wykamol Launches Ultra-Thin Iso-Therm Retrofit Insulation Wykamol has launched an innovative, patented textile-based thermal wall insulation which is ideal for creating dry and warm walls, primarily in retrofit situations, with the potential to save energy and protect properties from penetrating damp. ISO-THERM is an ultrathin - approximately 4mm thick - specially woven polyester-based material which, due to its flexibility and ease of use, can quickly be cut around light switches, sockets, radiator brackets, architraves, skirting boards and even complex shaped decorative mouldings. The ISO-THERM membrane is secured to the brick or block substrate with Wykamol’s unique ISO-THERM Adhesive, applied at a thickness of approximately 5mm using a notched trowel. The ISO-THERM is then simply rolled into the glue before receiving a plaster skim coat, affording an overall finish of approximately 10mm. The ISO-THERM material is both waterproof and vapour permeable, so resists lateral damp transference to prevent natural surface nitrates and chlorides forming as efflorescence and therefore does not support the growth of surface mould, instead allowing the wall to breathe. ISO-THERM offers a thermal conductivity of 0.34 W/mK, translating into a typical U-value for solid masonry walls, once treated of 1.488 W/m 2 K and an average percentage improvement in energy performance of 21.6 %. ISO-THERM is stable enough to accommodate a multitude of wall finishes and can even be applied to sound plasterboard. The ISOTHERM Adhesive, meanwhile, is a ready-to-use mineral-based paste, composed of stabilised potassium silicate, siliceous aggregates, graded quartz sand and other additives. Making Acoustics Work At The Office International Danish food company Danish Crown’s new headquarters has just been completed in Randers, Denmark. The 13,000 square metre complex comprises offices, meeting rooms, fitness centre, show kitchen, canteen and break-out areas. Designed by CEBRA Architecture, the interior maximises natural daylight and focuses on a healthy indoor climate and healthy materials. As part of the scheme for materials in natural tones and hard surfaces, Troldtekt acoustic panels were also specified for all the ceilings to ensure good acoustics and a comfortable sound environment for the many employees throughout the building. There are different variants of Troldtekt acoustic panels throughout the building. The award-winning ‘Troldtekt ® line’ from the design solutions range, in a natural finish, blends harmoniously with the brickwork in the many open areas, walkways and offices.

Ideal Heating Space-Saving Evomod Boilers Heat One Of The UK’s Tallest Buildings Four Evomod 1000kW output boilers from Ideal Heating – Commercial Products have been installed at Beetham Tower in Manchester, which has the distinction of being one of the UK’s tallest buildings outside of London. The 47-storey building, which is home to the Hilton Hotel and private residential apartments, had been heated by four gas fired atmospheric steel one piece boilers, with a total heat output of 4800kW, since its inception in 2006. With the boilers coming towards the end of their working lives, and with the building owners looking to improve energy efficiency, the decision was made to replace them. Manchester based mechanical and electrical contractor Atmostherm, a long standing Ideal Heating – Commercial Products customer, chose Evomod boilers for this site, based on Evomod’s small footprint and modular nature which made locating and installation easier than expected in the small plant room which had restricted access. Available in 250, 500, 750 and 1000kW outputs, the Evomod will achieve an output up to 1MW from a single unit solution together with a minimum footprint that enables the product to be installed where space is limited. Dural are pleased to have been asked to provide flooring solutions for many high end retailers and fashion brands. Here we highlight a recent project for Hugo Boss, Bicester Designer Outlet. Bicester Village is a designer outlet centre situated on the outskirts of Bicester, a town in Oxfordshire. It opened in 1995 and has become hugely popular. Hugo Boss, the luxury fashion brand, selling clothing, accessories and footwear needed advice for their textured tiled floor in their new store opening at the designer outlet. The beautiful high texture tiled floor was calculated to be approximately 300m2. When considering such a large expanse of tile it is important to use movement joints. Hard flooring expands and contracts, a movement joint prevents the tiles and grout from cracking and deboning. Movement Joint Profiles can cope with heavy stresses and distribute them evenly between the foundation and floor covering.

Q. Controls have come a long way in recent years – what are the main features of the latest devices that heating engineers should look out for? There are a plethora of heating controls on the market that heating engineers should carefully select from for their individual installation requirements. An engineer replacing or installing a new boiler should purchase controls which meet Boiler Plus regulations which came into force in April 2018. Most controls manufacturers now offer boiler plus compliant controls which offer time and temperature settings plus load compensation which provides the ability to modulate the flow temperature from the boiler based on the actual room temperature. This requires the control and boiler to communicate, sometimes via OpenTherm communication. OpenTherm ensures the boiler modulates the flow temperature to provide an accurate control over the desired room temperature and stops the boiler cycling on and off, therefore reducing gas use, saving money for homeowners. Boiler Plus compliance can also be met using a Smart Control which provides automation of time and temperature settings and optimisation which calculates the time needed for the heating system to reach the desired comfort level, optimising the heating system’s operation to ensure it uses the least amount of energy to attain the desired temperature. Q. With a lot of new technology the look of the device and its ease of use are as important as its functionality. Just how important is the design and user interface for smart heating controls? The design of a new smart control must provide the user with a simple, easy to use and understand interface between them and their heating system. Manufacturers now provide a range of controls which offer different features and functions to suit the homeowner’s age range and personal requirements such as larger clearer screens for the visually impaired and larger temperature selection buttons to allow elderly and vulnerable people to simply turn their heating up or down subject to their comfort levels. Similarly, smart controllers now offer sleeker designs which blend into a modern home featuring glass and stainless steel with a lack of switches and buttons with the controls being touchscreen or app based. It is key for manufacturers to design a range of controls to provide choice for the heating engineer to offer their customers based on their budget, age range and preference, to suit the modern lifestyle whilst offering the features and functions to comply with the energy efficiency legislation.
Q. With rising utility prices, energy efficiency is on everyone’s minds. How can the latest Smart Controls help deliver energy savings? With many heating controls being controlled from apps on smart phones and tablets, the ability to control your heating at any time of day and from virtually anywhere means you can be in more control than when you are at home. We know of social housing providers who claim that as many as 90% of their call outs for heating problems are because the tenant cannot use the controls properly. Changing The Perception Of Concrete Bricks Could Be The Key To Unlocking Carbon Savings In New Homes Creating a sustainable home is now a top priority for house builders, from locally sourced materials to energy efficiency measures. A recent survey by Marshalls showed that 43.5% of people would pay more for a home built with sustainable materials – motivated mainly by doing their bit for the environment and saving or generating energy for their home. This insight, combined with the post 2025 targets in the Future Homes Standard, it’s clear that there is work to be done. Whilst some developers are focusing their energy efficiency efforts on choices for interiors, the savviest are revisiting the materials they use for exteriors and initial build, instead. And, for some, this starts with the concrete brick.

Revisiting the concrete brick - The manufacturing process of concrete bricks is partly what makes them a more sustainable option over traditional clay facing bricks. For clay bricks to harden they need to be fired in fossilfuelled kilns, creating significant carbon emissions. Concrete facing bricks, on the other hand, harden naturally through an exothermic process, meaning that significantly less energy is needed in their curing. In addition, concrete actually absorbs CO2 over its lifetime - a completely natural process referred to as carbonation or “sequestration”; bricks absorb CO2 from the atmosphere as they age and harden.

Once the CO2 comes into contact with the concrete, a catalytic process permanently transforms it and locks it into the material, so even when the product is crushed at the end of its lifecycle the carbon will not escape. The brickwork element alone for Marshalls concrete bricks, for instance, can absorb 4.2kg of CO2 per square metre over a 60-year lifespan, and the total lifetime reduction in CO2 compared to traditional clay facing bricks on the market has been calculated at 49.1%. Carbon sequestration - Following a successful trial last year, Marshalls are now using a process called carbon sequestration to lock even more carbon into their concrete bricks. Currently being used on their Fairway from Grove range, waste carbon is injected during the manufacturing process with no impact on the materials’ performance, durability or appearance. Case study: 93 tonne carbon saving delivered on major housing project - Marshalls Bricks & Masonry helped housebuilder Backhouse save 93 tonnes of carbon thanks to using concrete bricks rather than conventional clay alternatives. The Mayfair Vintage facing brick was chosen for the Merlin Rise development to achieve a high-quality, reclaimed brick aesthetic that aligns with Backhouse’s sustainability goals. Marmox Thermoblocks Specified On Wigan Passivhaus Development The final phase of a PassivHaus development is just getting under way in Wigan with high performance Thermoblocks from the range of Marmox being used to counter cold bridging beneath a highly insulated timber frame construction. The St. Mary’s project is being under taken for Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council by principal contractor, Tyson Construction with Pozzoni Architecture being the lead architectural consultant and BTP Architects gilling the roll of specialist PassivHaus assessor. All of the Thermoblocks in 100mm and 140mm widths, along with boxes of the special Marmox 360 adhesive are being supplied by Travis Perkin’s Blackpool branch. The scheme to provide much needed affordable and easy to heat new homes has been part-funded by the Government’s Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities. The Site Manager for Tyson Construction, Matt Horrocks, commented: “For fitting the timber frame soleplates it is necessary to do a ‘setting out’ course across the block-and-beam, with the dense concrete block serving to contain the screed. The 140mm Thermoblocks are laid beneath all the external walls, followed by a 140 common brick course and then the standard blocks. Wraptite® Is The Solution For Dundee Young Persons’ Home The Wraptite external air barrier system from the A. Proctor Group has been chosen for its high performance airtight insulation for a new home for young people in Dundee, Scotland. The new £3m single-storey building will be a home for some of the most vulnerable young people in the city where they can grow up in a supportive and caring setting. The project design includes ensuite bedrooms, shared living space, dining, kitchen, and activities facilities, and accommodation for staff. Robertson Construction Tayside secured the project as part of a direct award through Places for People Procurement Hub Framework. The specification created by Dundee City Council Architects for the project was to use materials to achieve high value performance and help achieve good airtightness. Robertson Construction Tayside appointed Robertson Timber Engineering as the timber frame manufacturer and supplier for the project. Nicola Jackson, Net Zero Projects Lead at Robertson Group explained. “Installing the product at low level in the factory allowed the membrane to be more easily applied and avoided the risk of working at height. The factory installation also enabled the product to be installed in completely dry conditions to ensure full adhesion in a quality-controlled environment to deliver the required airtightness requirements. The product is very durable and provides excellent protection, reducing any risk of damage on site.” The Wraptite air barrier system is a safe and simplified membrane system. Mapei Protects New Homes In Historic Building Conversion A Mapei waterproofing membrane & watertight concrete system has been designed by Lainton Services, Stockport as part of a sympathetic conversion of a former medical Centre in Altrincham, Cheshire. Following relocation of the centre, the character building has been transformed into new homes. The Mapei system was installed within basement areas, by Lainton Services, with components supplied by Kestral Construction Products. The historic town-centre building is located in a conservation area, on the same site as the Grade II listed Church of St John the Evangelist which has also been converted. Dating back to the 1800’s, the building was originally used as a school, before being converted into a medical centre in the 1980’s. The sensitive £4m redevelopment provides five high-end 3 and 4 bedroom homes, with basements and private gardens. Two Mapei pre & post applied HDPE (High Density Polyethylene Geomembrane) waterproof membranes were used to protect the underground structure of the building: Mapeproof AL AP was applied before concrete was poured and Mapeproof AL 1200 AP was applied afterwards. The robust membranes are highly resistant to puncturing, tearing, natural elements and UV rays, and they provide a barrier against groundwater, soil moisture, radon and methane gas. On contact with concrete, the system forms a permanent, tough bond. The system also included Mapei’s watertight concrete admixture Idrocrete KR 1000: a powder admixture made from special hydrophilic components that reduces the permeability of hardened concrete which was supplied by Cemex – along with Mapeproof Liquid Membrane: a two-component polyurethane elastomeric, thixotropic, liquid waterproofing membrane. www.mapei.co.uk

Triton Systems Used In Underpinning Old Kent Water Mill One of Triton Systems most experienced installers has employed a package of its waterproofing products, while carrying technically challenging improvements to the basement and substructure of a 19th century watermill in Kent. Archer Specialist Treatments was called in by the South African based owner of the scenic residential property near Ashford, owing to it suffering continuing problems of water ingress as the floor level lies nearly two metres below the surface of the old mill pond. Paul Halliwell, a Chartered Builder and Director of Archer Specialist Treatments, recounted: “The waterproofing and conservation work on this old water mill were made more complicated by the fact that the floor level had been previously lowered by another building company, without properly tanking the structure and also the fact the client wanted to retain a decorative stonework wall within the basement.” The remedial foundation works involved excavating one metre long sections of the old blue clay sub-soil from beneath the existing footings to a width of 400 mm, before installing reinforcing cages and building a shutter to retain high strength concrete. Once this had reached sufficient strength, the intermediate sections were dug out and cast before Triton’s CM8 studded drainage membrane was installed along the full 10 metre length. This drains down into a similar length of Triton Aquachannel, connecting to one of the manufacturer’s submersible pumps. www.tritonsystems.co.uk
Stamisol Safe One Chosen For New Radiotherapy Building ITP has supplied Stamisol Safe One, the UK’s most advanced breather membrane, for the construction of a new radiotherapy building at Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield. A semi-derelict former coach house on Wellesley Road has been demolished to make way for a facility housing Linac equipment used for the delivery of high-energy X-rays or electrons. Part of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals’ masterplan to redevelop the site, the completed project will help to serve growing demand for treatment. Stamisol Safe One was installed within the external wall to provide highly durable protection against rainwater with a breathable membrane which allows the release of internal water vapour, preventing the build-up of condensation in the insulation layer. Lightweight Retrofit with Nordic Copper Adaptive reuse of existing buildings is an essential strategy to reduce embodied carbon, while regenerating our urban environments. An exemplar of this approach – 72 Broadwick Street – is crowned by a profiled roofscape clad in Nordic Brown Light copper from Aurubis. Set within the Soho Conservation Area, 72 Broadwick Street is a half-acre island site fronting London’s iconic Carnaby Street. Originally built in the 1970s as a ‘brutalist’ concrete, seven- storey headquarters building, its recent extensive mixed-use redevelopment now provides a range of uses including offices, restaurants, a gym, retail and residential units. Designed by architects Buckley Gray Yeoman (BGY) for developer Shaftesbury Carnaby, the regeneration project demonstrates how a diverse range of uses can be accommodated within one urban block in the heart of London. 72 Broadwick Street was recognised as the ‘Best Mixed-Use Scheme’ by the 2023 Building London Planning Awards. As well as requiring major structural alterations and remodelling, the project also presented various challenges for architects BGY, planning consultant Rolfe Judd and main contractor Blenheim House Construction. They included working around the West End’s largest electrical substation, keeping existing ground floor units operational and minimising impact upon a major retail destination. The building’s exterior has been transformed with new fenestration throughout, new feature brickwork and existing brickwork treated to give the complete development a contemporary feel. Reduced Structural Demands - The original fifth and sixth storeys were demolished and replaced with extensive, lightweight rooftop additions wrapped in an external skin of Nordic Brown Light copper, creating residential apartments around a central courtyard.

Eleven of the fifteen apartments have distinctive pitched roofs that rise and fall to create a dynamic roof profile. Ben Oram, BGY’s Head of Technical, said: “In one of inner London’s densest districts, the profiled roofscape of this re-purposed urban block helps to embed it among the varied age, materiality and massing of its neighbours.” Conceived as the ‘crown’ of the building, the copper roof eaves sit above terraces enjoying panoramic views across Soho, with their deep overhang contributing to solar shading. Copper is also used extensively for vertical cladding in the form of cassette panels, some perforated to provide ventilation. Rachael Owens, BGY’s Head of Sustainability, explained: “Copper cladding was chosen due to its lightweight nature, as the structure at the top of the building needed to be as light as possible to prevent the need to strengthen the existing structure below. When compared with alternative metal cladding products, the copper could be specified with a reduced thickness, due to its strength, which reduced overall material use and embodied carbon emissions”. The Nordic Brown Light roofing and cladding, supplied by Aurubis stockist Metra Non Ferrous Metals and carefully installed and crafted by Roles Broderick, defines the regeneration of this landmark building. Nordic Brown copper is pre-oxidised in the Aurubis factory to provide straightaway the same oxidised surface that develops naturally over time externally. The lighter or darker shades of brown – determined by the thickness of the oxide layer – will continue to change in the environment and Nordic Brown Light gradually develops a stable dark chocolate brown colour. Living Copper Surfaces - Factory-applied surface treatments can also provide patination for Nordic Copper products straightaway and to a selected level. This is particularly useful for vertical surfaces which might not otherwise develop a blue/green patina. Many of the processes involved are very similar to those taking place in the environment. They utilise copper mineral compounds, not alien chemical actions, bringing forward environmental changes without taking away the integrity of copper as a natural, living material.

Cupa Pizarras Provides Sustainable Rainscreen Cladding For Modern Home CUPACLAD®, a rainscreen cladding system, has recently been installed as part of a 1980s ecobungalow refurbishment in Tarporley, Cheshire. The manufacturer was selected thanks to its reputation for supplying high quality, natural products with a clear point of origin, while the cladding system also complemented the home’s sustainable ethos. Architect Jon Moorhouse and his wife purchased the derelict bungalow with aspirations to keep the original eco-friendly design but bring it into the 21st century to create an almost zero-carbon home. As such, a second storey was added to the existing building, which was then super-insulated. The exterior was redesigned using a recycled steel substructure, Staffordshire bricks and local green oak for parts of the cladding. Throughout the project, emphasis was placed on sourcing the highest quality materials that would blend in with the surrounding rural landscape while maintaining a contemporary design. To this endeavor, Jon sought a natural slate cladding system, as he felt it would work well with the green oak elements.

He came across CUPACLAD® slate rainscreen cladding and reached out to CUPA PIZARRAS. The team visited Jon’s architectural practice to present a CPD and discuss the project. It was soon decided that CUPACLAD® would be ideal as it could achieve all the aesthetic and sustainability requirements as both CUPACLAD® 101 and 201 systems have achieved BRE Global Verified Status and appear in the GreenBook live database. Fully BBA approved, CUPACLAD® 201 Vanguard – the system eventually specified - is 100% noncombustible, with an A1 fire-rating, and offers a lifespan of over 100 years. Jon Moorhouse commented: “I was looking for vertical hanging slate that would fit with the colour scheme of the house, while also contrasting with the oak elements. The design for the balcony also uses vertical cladding, so we wanted a horizontal slate to complement these lines. CUPACLAD® really helped us to achieve this vision.”

Bilco UK Sets The Standard For Safety At Glasgow Housing Development Glasgow’s latest redevelopment project, located on Langside Road, is built upon the former site of the city’s Victoria Infirmary and consists of a large housing development that includes 413 flats, offices and retail space. The 3.75 hectare site, which is situated next to Queen’s Park on the south side of the city, forms an important part of the Battlefield area’s character, with the buildings’ exterior reflecting and complementing the surrounding heritage by using the city's traditional blonde coloured sandstone. As part of the construction process, Bilco UK was commissioned to supply six ESW-50REM Smoke Vents, in addition to seven E-50TB Roof Access Hatches, to provide the highest standards of safety and efficiency, whilst being sympathetic to the project’s overall design. Featuring a linear actuator operating mechanism that opens the cover to 140 degrees within 60 seconds, the smoke vents ensure compliance with Building Regulations Approved Document B, BS9999 and EN12101-2. The built-in wind deflector also provides protection against smoke being blown back into the vent in the event of a fire., whilst the newly-designed closed-cell EPDM sponge gasket helps meet Building Regulation air leakage targets by providing a better seal of the cover to the curb.
