Baxi Commercial Supplies Solar Water Heating For Oswestry’s New Leisure Centre Baxi Commercial has supplied Andrews Water Heaters solar water heating system and a high efficiency, condensing gas-fired water heater to provide domestic hot water at Oswestry Leisure Centre, a new state-of-the-art leisure facility which opened in 2011. The £8 million development replaced the existing 1970’s building, which was becoming increasingly expensive to maintain and the new centre boasts both main and learner pools as well as a sports hall, fitness suite, activities studio and multifunction room. The building was designed to comply with Shropshire Council’s policy on sustainability, incorporating a number of renewable technologies to minimize both carbon footprint and running costs.

The performance specification for the new building’s mechanical services was prepared by consulting engineers, Ramboll, who selected the equipment as part of a series of measures to improve the sustainable credentials of the building, using appropriate renewable technologies. An important component was the Andrews Water Heaters SOLARflo water heating system which includes solar collectors mounted on the main roof. With 90.8% transmission efficiency, 95% absorption efficiency and a low emission loss of only 5%, these collectors transfer maximum heat to a 900 litre, non-corrosive, stainless steel unvented twin-coil cylinder.

This, in turn, supplies pre-heated water to a SUPAflo SF66 condensing gas-fired water heater, thereby considerably reducing consumption of natural gas. The SF66 SUPAflo model has an output of 475kW and a recovery rate of 8,130 litres/hour through a temperature rise of 50°C and is linked to an Andrews SB500 buffer vessel. This system supplies all the domestic hot water for the building, serving 38 showers, 40 wash hand basins, three cleaners’ sinks and two tea room sinks. Integral controls are supplied with the equipment and these are connected to the BMS for time control and monitoring. The BMS also provides overheat, gas safety controls and fire alarm interlocks.

The equipment was installed by Technic Mechanical Services Ltd. Eight solar collectors were mounted on the roof, which has a very low pitch. Consequently, the collectors were specially supplied for the project, having a landscape rather than a

portrait format and they were installed using the flat roof mounting kit supplied. The remainder of the equipment, comprising the water heater, buffer storage vessel and solar cylinder, were installed in the first floor plant room, along with the remainder of the SOLARflo package, which also includes solar controls, pump station and expansion vessels. SOLARflo glazed flat plate collectors are Solar Key Mark Approved and, similar to the stainless steel unvented cylinders and evacuated tubes in the Andrews range, carry a 10 year guarantee.

Andrews’ SUPAflo water heaters are gas-fired, high efficiency water heaters, capable of supplying large volumes of hot water for a variety of commercial and industrial applications. These are low water content units with a copper or stainless steel finned tube heat exchanger and stainless steel headers and manifold. Suitable for either vented or unvented systems, they operate ‘instantaneously’, providing hot water on demand or, and, as in this case, can be linked with a buffer vessel.

The SF60 KM series of SUPAflo water heaters is the latest addition to Andrews’ SUPAflo range, providing condensing technology with ultra low NOx and CO2 emissions. The units are high efficiency condensing heaters with downward firing blown gas premix water cooled burners that fully modulate between 20% and 100%. The heaters offer a seasonal efficiency of 106.8% at 75/60°C. Units are lightweight with a very small footprint, providing greater siting flexibility. The heat exchanger is constructed with stainless steel fin-tubes and stainless steel header manifolds. All models have a room sealed facility if required. In addition to the standard equipment supplied, units in the SF60 range also come complete with a gas filter and condensate trap and have the facility to control and power their own Bronze UPS primary circulator.

Leisure Time For Colourful Abet Laminates

Abet Laminati’s compact grade laminates are colouring the new Westminster Lodge leisure centre in St Albans.

For this £24m facility, S&P Architects specified a combination of compact grade laminates from the Plain colours and Legni woodgrain ranges. Together these have created bright, colourful and dramatic cubicles, lockers, vanity units and benches, all fabricated by specialist manufacturer Prospec.

Abet Laminati’s High Pressure Laminates are a popular choice for this type of heavy duty application and are commonly specified for lockers, table tops, vanity units and cubicles. A new watersport centre has been constructed on Colwyn Bay’s waterfront. Liverpool based architects K2 specified Kemmlit’s seawater resistant Type R locker systems and Kemmlit’s Cronus cubicle systems for the changing rooms. The Type R locker system features an easy to clean seawater resistant aluminium construction which is 100% corrosion resistant. Kemmlit’s innovative compression jointing techniques ensure these lockers have a high tensile strength with no unsightly welding joints. The panels are made from 13mm high pressure laminate with a special overlay to protect them against abrasion, wear and scratches. Dallmer Aids Drainage At Newmarket Spa The privately owned Bedford Lodge Hotel in Newmarket, a Victorian property once part of the estate of the sixth Duke of Bedford has recently launched a new Spa. The Bedford Lodge Hotel management called on Barnes Construction, a Suffolk based construction company, to carry out the refurbishment work to their respective high standards.

The Spa offers a range of Heat Experiences as well as a Hydrotherapy pool cleansing, mud treatments, showers, steam, and sauna rooms, beauty rooms and a Spa lounge.

With regard to most of the services provided, an abundance of water is used and needs to be drained away efficiently and unobtrusively, therefore a suitable product for wet rooms was required.

Barnes Construction contacted Dallmer, a company with over 100 years experience in this sphere and sought advice as to which of its extensive range of products would be suitable. Dallmer recommended its floor channel Ceraline Pronto F 60Omm with a built in depth of only ….which would be suitable for each location in the Spa. The Pronto was extremely simple to install, flanges securing the drain to the floor are grade quartz sand coated onto an epoxy glue which gives optimal waterproof adhesion.

The Pronto has sound insulated adjustable leveling legs as well as adjustable screws for leveling the steel cover plate. The drain body has a removable trap insert for easy cleaning and in each case a stainless steel cover plate was used.

Each of the floor channels was then connected to a Dallmer Tisto one piece FAST TRAP, which is perfect for wet rooms on timber or solid floors. Tested to a flow rate of 45 litres per minute, the trap is specifically designed for use with the latest high-powered showers. How A School’s Vision For Design Excellence Was Realised In this article, Ian Smith, Senior Manager at architectural aluminium façade systems specialist, Technal, looks at an ambitious redevelopment project at Yarm School which has delivered state-of-the-art teaching accommodation and an outstanding venue for performing arts.

Yarm School is an independent co-educational private day school near Stocktonon-Tees in the north east. Associated Architects were appointed to develop a masterplan for the school which is located in the heart of the historic market town of Yarm. The principle objective was to provide new buildings capable of supporting modern teaching practices and to meet the needs and expectations of students.

The school has developed considerably since it was established in 1978. It has occupied a Grade II listed 18th century Friarage, a number of purpose-built facilities have been added, and two residential properties were acquired in 2003.

Key Design Requirements The school’s plan was to expand the current teaching facilities on its three sites in several phases to minimise disruption to teaching, and to create a state-of-the-art theatre facility to help deliver its academic aspirations. The key design requirements included: To enhance the experience of staff, pupils and visitors to the school To provide facilities that would be modern, light and welcoming with a strong sense of place and identity To take account of intensive use in the academic year and out-of-hours use by the local community Materials that would be low maintenance and durable Introducing high levels of natural light with the minimum loss of space Consideration of the visual impact of the lit building at night and to use this to help identify the school’s facilities to its visitors A high level of acoustic performance to minimise noise transference To sensitively improve the river frontage.

Redeveloping the Senior School In the redevelopment of the senior school, which serves around 700 pupils, the

centrepiece is an academic block overlooking the River Tees and spanning around 3700sqm of combined accommodation. It was designed to respect the scale and height of the listed Friarage building. This riverside scheme is generally three storeys high and has a rectilinear form to accommodate high specification classrooms and multi-use dance and drama group activity studios.

Outside spaces include a courtyard for quiet contemplation, a series of ‘grand’ steps to provide a central meeting point and an outdoor terrace with views over the River Tees towards the hills in the distance. A combination of paving, decking and reinforced grass allow for relaxed outdoor space during regattas.

The architects selected a considered palette of materials to create a visually interesting form for the new senior school buildings. These included pre-weathered zinc cladding, rendered panels, western red cedar cladding and aluminium curtain walling, which were chosen for their robustness, sustainability and quality of construction for technical performance and efficiency.

The Performing Arts Centre The most recent phase of the senior school redevelopment focused on the construction of a fan-shaped performing arts centre. This theatre building has a sculptural form to reflect its importance to the school. It provides a fully flexible auditorium capable of seating up to 800 people, and is connected by a double height entrance foyer which maximises the stunning views of the River Tees, to the riverside academic block.

In the auditorium, an acoustic moveable partition can be drawn across the entrance to the stage to separate the forestage and auditorium from the stage area, allowing concurrent use as a fully independent studio theatre, and for the auditorium to be used for assemblies, lectures, music events, exams or dinner dances.

The main auditorium seating is telescopic and has been designed to leave a completely clear flat floor if required. A large stage elevator that serves an orchestra pit can be pre-set to various levels, including basement for an orchestra ensemble, the main auditorium level or forestage level.

Due to the close proximity to the River Tees, the internal floor level of the centre had to be raised above the surrounding external levels. The auditorium roof is

formed with clear span 40m long curved steel trusses clad in elongated hexagonal preweathered zinc shingles for the vertical faces and a combination of faceted roof glazing and zinc standing seam cladding for the roof. Internally a combination of acoustically reflective, absorptive and diffusive finishes was selected to provide a high standard of acoustic performance, suited to the multifunctional nature of the auditorium.

The auditorium and stage studio are clad in 40mm profile European oak timber slats radiating towards the centre point of the stage with absorptive or reflective acoustic backing. An extruded and randomised profile of the same timber slat is repeated on the rear auditorium wall to provide a degree of sound diffusion.

The Façade Solutions A double height entrance foyer for the auditorium to make the most of the beautiful views over the river, was created using Technal’s GEODE-MX Visible Grid curtain walling.

This system was also used for the dance studios, classrooms and corridors, filling the building with natural light. The GEODE-MX SG Mechanical option was selected for the music room – this system allows a flush glass façade and less visible aluminium.

Technal’s FXi46 window system delivers high levels of natural ventilation throughout the project.

Large bays of four side hung casements were inserted into the curtain walling and interspersed with western red cedar panels for the classrooms, with top hung windows and integrated rendered panels specified for the dance studio. In the corridor areas, the windows are electrically operated top hung systems, with contrasting enamelstoved glazed spandrel panels also inserted into the GEODE curtain walling.

According to the Project Architect, Barbora Bott at Associated Architects, “A key design element for the glazing was to achieve large spans with minimum sight lines to allow extensive daylight penetration and reduce artificial lighting. We were also looking for robust, low maintenance aluminium systems with good U values, visual consistency across the project, a high standard of aesthetics, and value for money. Technal’s façade products achieved all these criteria and have met our expectations. As a result, we would consider specifying them for other projects.”

Specially-designed restrictors were used for the windows to the classrooms, and the position of the window handles was adjusted for the office areas on the east elevation,

to allow easy opening of the windows which spanned floor to ceiling height. All Technal’s systems were finished in dark blue-grey to complement the palette of materials selected for the building envelope – white render, western red cedar horizontal panels, anodised aluminium perforated rainscreen panels, and pre-weathered zinc cladding.

Minimising Impact on the Environment Low energy features of the project include a 110m deep ground source heat pump to provide under floor heating for the whole theatre, solar panels to pre-heat water for changing rooms and toilet facilities; high efficiency gas boilers; high level brise soleil sun shading to reduce solar gain; heat recovery ventilation, and high levels of natural light to reduce the artificial lighting demand.

The £20m redevelopment scheme and its diverse facilities are set to make a lasting impression on its students and on the local community, with its creative design for a bright and modern learning environment.

And in recognition of this success, the performing arts centre has now been shortlisted in the RIBA North East Awards which celebrate the best in architecture and design in the built environment from across the region. It is an acknowledgement of a great building and recognition of the whole team’s effort, and most importantly, the school’s vision for high quality design.

Enveloping With Light This stunning space was designed by LSI architects as part of their work at INTO University of East Anglia. It is a dramatic example of how the unique Kalwall® translucent system diffuses daylight through walls or roofs to create the ideal ambience for study, learning and leisure in colleges and schools. U values as low as 0.28W/m2K, equivalent to a solid wall or roof, can be achieved by including translucent aerogel insulation within the panels.

Kalwall is the most highly insulating diffuse light transmitting system available and comprises a translucent structural composite sandwich panel permanently bonded to a grid core constructed of interlocked thermally-broken aluminium I-beams. Educational Copper Dudley College’s aspiration for a bold contemporary building which respects its historic town centre context is realised with completion of Dudley Evolve, characterised by horizontal copper panels from Aurubis Architectural. The focal point of the scheme is a cantilevered theatre auditorium, clad in bands of randomly arranged horizontal copper panels with three different surfaces. In addition to Nordic Standard mill finish copper, Aurubis Architectural supplied panels in Nordic Brown and Nordic Brown Light, both pre-oxidised at its factory to give straightaway the same oxidised surface that otherwise develops over time in the environment. www.aurubis.com/finland/architectural Enquiry No 10

Potterton Commercial Condensing Boilers In Heating Refurbishment At Holyhead School, Birmingham When the boilers at Holyhead School in Handsworth, Birmingham needed replacing due to age and obsolescence, Baxi Commercial was able to supply an energy efficient alternative: Potterton Commercial condensing boilers which were ideally suited to the installation as they were selected to complement the existing radiator circuits. The existing boilers were original to the building and certain spare parts were no longer available so refurbishment of the heating system was essential.

The three Potterton Commercial Eurocondense 500kW condensing boilers and three 800 litre calorifiers were selected by consulting engineers for Dodd Group with specialist input from the Baxi Commercial Division technical team. The Eurocondense model was specifically chosen due to the age of the remainder of the system and the required flow and return water temperatures. The boilers and calorifiers were installed in the ground floor plantroom and only pipework within the room was replaced.

The three Eurocondense boilers operate with stand alone controls and are not connected to a BMS. The calorifiers provide Domestic Hot Water (DHW) throughout the school, serving wash hand basins, sinks and showers. Potterton Commercial’s latest Eurocondense floor standing condensing gas boiler offers a range of upgraded features, including a smaller footprint, improved modulation range and reduced operating noise levels. This new boiler incorporates a heat exchanger made from aluminium/silicon with a 10 year warranty, delivering exceptional energy efficiency as well as advanced ultra low NOx performance of 35mg/kWh (Class 5).

Potterton Commercial has developed the Integrated System Regulator (ISR) control system in conjunction with Siemens for the Eurocondense range of boilers. The user friendly control panel offers display of operation status, built in weather compensation, time control facilities for both heating and DHW, summer/winter change over and fault diagnostics and the ISR control can be used with simple room thermostats or, as in this case, with a fully integrated, site-wide Building Energy Management System.

Remote status facilities are built in for run and fault and the ISR control allows for remote control of set point of temperature or power output. Kemper System Brings New Life To University Campus Roof Waterproofing specialist, Kemper System, has helped Anglia Ruskin University transform a former office block into a prestigious faculty building thanks to its Stratex warm roof and Kemperol V210 cold liquid-applied waterproofing systems.

The University bought ‘Guild House’ as the new home for its Faculty of Health, Social Care & Education, refurbishing the building throughout before turning its attention to the largely failing bituminous felt roof. The University’s projects team opted for a warm roof and specified Kemper’s Stratex system to upgrade the building’s thermal performance while providing a durable waterproof solution.

Roofing contractor, Mells Roofing, stripped back the two failing roofs on Guild House’s East and West Buildings and cleaned the existing felt roof substrate on the South Building to prepare it for installation of the warm roof system. The installation team laid a Kempershield vapour control layer on all three roofs before beginning installation of Kemper System’s Kempertherm insulation board. Although Kemperol V210 is impervious to standing water, a tapered insulation board was chosen to create a slight pitch on the existing flat roofs to help with water drainage and, once this had been primed, the installation team applied the Kemperol V210 liquid membrane. Laid in a single process, the V210 resin saturates a tear-resistant reinforcement fleece and cures to provide a seamless monolithic membrane that is permanently elastic, tough, UV resistant, and doesn’t require any additional protective layers. www.kempersystem.co.uk Enquiry No 12

Yorkon Increases School Capacity With Off-Site Construction A new two-storey teaching block for an expanding Leicestershire school completed by off-site construction specialist, Yorkon, a member of the Portakabin Group, has been described as an ‘iconic building’.

One of the highest-performing state schools in Leicestershire, Martin High School in Anstey, is expanding from a middle school for 11-14 year olds to a secondary school, catering for 11-16 year olds.

A new building was then needed to accommodate 50 per cent more pupils over the next two years.

The new facility provides eight classrooms and 12 toilets. The Yorkon preinstalled high performance concrete floor has been used to deliver superior acoustics and a robust finish for a demanding secondary school environment. Full height curtain walling to the entrance has created an impressive exterior and a combination of spandrel panels between floors, brickwork and cedar cladding give the scheme a distinctive and contemporary appearance.

Off-site construction allowed the building to be delivered with much less disruption than a site-based solution and the modules were installed over a weekend.

Martin High School’s Business Manager, Sue Plunkett, said, “There were a number of benefits to working with Yorkon, including the speed of construction and low level of disruption to a busy school environment. The finished building feels more like a traditional construction rather than a facility built off site and we would be very happy to work with Yorkon again in the future.”

“This was a new venture for the school and we have been very pleased with both the finished result and the construction process. The building is designed to make the most of the fantastic views from the windows of the nearby beauty spot, Bradgate Park. The design of the cladding blends in well with the countryside and we have created a truly iconic building for the school.”

Yorkon has an extensive track record in the primary and secondary education sectors, having completed a wide variety of bespoke modular projects including selfcontained teaching buildings, classroom extensions and complete schools, delivering all the speed, quality, sustainability and efficiency benefits of off-site construction.

Following completion of this project on time and on budget, Yorkon has since been awarded its fourth academy project in the Midlands – a two-storey sixth form centre at Woodbrook Vale High School in Loughborough.

Portakabin Awarded £8M Contract By Surrey County Council To Help Meet The Urgent Need For School Places Portakabin, the UK’s leading modular building manufacturer, has been awarded a major contract by Surrey County Council to provide around 20 new classroom buildings to help meet the rising demand for primary school places in the region.

This is the fourth year Portakabin, who are on Surrey’s framework contract, has been awarded an annual programme of modular building, which is valued at in excess of £8m for 2013.

Designed and constructed to permanent building standards and in line with the latest Department for Education guidelines for teaching and learning, spacious classrooms for 330 children at 11 different schools will be delivered

by Portakabin in time for the start of the 2013/14 academic year. A further six classrooms for 180 children will be provided for the 2014/15 school year. Outof-date temporary classrooms at 10 schools will also be replaced with new stateof-the-art teaching accommodation.

All the buildings will be finished to the highest standards, with architectural detailing such as cedar cladding, brickwork and pitched roofs to complement existing facilities on each school site, and high performance concrete floors for enhanced acoustic performance.

At Ravenscote Community Junior School in Camberley, Portakabin will be constructing a double classroom block and two purpose-designed music rooms.

Pupils at Oakwood School in Horley will benefit from a new drama block which will be fitted out with specialist equipment and finishes, a concrete floor for a high level of acoustic performance, lamp diffusers and blackout blinds.

SE Controls Provides Safe And Comfortable Environment For Staffordshire Students A £30 million Science and Technology Centre at Staffordshire University’s Stoke Campus is relying on a combined smoke and natural ventilation solution from SE Controls to create a comfortable and safe environment for staff and students.

Designed by architects Sheppard Robson and built by Miller Construction, the extensive facility is part of a £200 million flagship regeneration scheme, which is transforming education in the region with the development of the ‘Uni-Q’ university quarter.

Working closely with façade and access specialist, Norking Aluminium, SE Controls was responsible for the supply, installation and commissioning of the smoke and natural ventilation solution to ensure the fully automated system met design specifications and legislation for air quality as well as smoke safety in the event of a fire.

SE Controls supplied 240 SCCO and TGCO type chain actuators to the project that which were used in conjunction with 40 OS2 controllers to provide complete control over the vertical vents, louvres and atrium vents. In normal operating mode, the actuators and controllers ensure that carbon dioxide and temperature levels are managed effectively throughout the building to maintain a comfortable working environment using signals from building management system. Night purging and cooling of the Science and Technology Centre is also handled automatically by the SE Controls’ system, which vents warm air and allows cooler air to enter the building. However, in the event of a fire, the system operates in smoke ventilation mode to ensure that all corridors, escape routes and public areas are kept free from smoke to aid the rapid evacuation of the building. www.secontrols.com Enquiry No 19

Monodraught X-Air Systems Create A Future-Proof Controllable Natural Ventilation Strategy For A Primary School Near Stansted Airport Bold ambitions led an Essex primary school to move to a village’s new estate, and gain an exciting modern building by Sarah Wigglesworth Architects. Working with Essex County Council, the decision was made to relocate the school to the centre of the village’s 840 new homes on the Priors Green estate. Commenting on the specification of Monodraught X-Air systems for the school, the project’s architect Toby Carr says it was intended from the outset to specify low energy natural ventilation, as the practice specialises in low energy buildings and sustainable architecture.

“We were keen to specify a natural ventilation solution and the client was hoping to achieve a high BREEAM rating,” says Toby: “so to meet both objectives we needed to adopt the most effective natural ventilation strategy available. The Windcatcher X-Air system from Monodraught proved to be an extremely effective and affordable solution.”

All classrooms are monitored using a Monodraught iNVent control system, which works automatically but also allows teachers to override individual systems if they want to. On educational projects, Sarah Wigglesworth Architects is particularly interested in ensuring that buildings are not simply containers in which children attend school, but are also learning environments. To achieve this, systems employed within the school are, where possible, made apparent and visible to the children. RigiSystems LokFold Creates Eye-Catching Display In Liverpool RigiSystems LokFold standing seam has been used to stunning effect on the new learning centre at Notre Dame Catholic College in Liverpool.

All the walls have been clad in 0.9mm aluminium LokFold in a PVDF finish in luminous Moonstone Blue and Gold. The result is a kind of living wall effect that changes colour when moving around the building and with changing light conditions.

Around 1,500 sq m of LokFold were used in three different cover widths to enhance the dramatic visual impact of the project. Brett Landscaping Paving Design Unites Medical Centre And School Brett Landscaping has used its creative expertise to produce an aesthetically-pleasing, cost-effective paving design that provides a cohesive identity for a refurbished healthcare and education complex in Surbiton.

The new development, which comprises Surbiton Health Centre and Lime Tree Primary School, is situated on the grounds of an old hospital. Brett was contacted by the site contractors, Farncombe Construction, to enhance the revamped facilities in a way that took into account the site’s sustainable needs and made best use of the available site space.

After initial investigations, Brett Landscaping recommended a combination of Alpha Flow and Omega Flow permeable paving, complemented with decorative kerbs and Yorktone flag paving. Brett also manufactured a bespoke flat block kerb – a product that is not part of the company’s standard range – to deliver the optimum solution for the project’s requirements.

The Photon Project To Launch At London Design Festival 2013 All-Glass Pod Tests The Biological Effects Of Daylight On Humans The Photon Project is a ground-breaking scientific study that is being launched at the 2013 London Design Festival. A prototype all-glass Photon Pod will be built in the forecourt – and the public will be able to experience ‘life under glass’ from sunrise to sunset – as well as take part in specially designed tests to measure their levels of alertness or relaxation.

This event will launch the Photon Project, and introduce the public to this unique and important study – which addresses a modern problem that’s negatively affecting the health, wellbeing, mood and behaviour of millions of people – disruption to the biological clock caused by lack of daylight.

Cantifix Ltd – a market-leading specialist glazing company, has asked a scientific research team from Oxford University to be the academic partner on the Photon Project – and to establish a more direct link between daylight and living under glass on wellbeing - that in the long run will benefit our quality of life and health.The research phase of the Photon Project will last 4 years, and involve 300 participants spending time in Photon Pods – 30m2 all-glass living enclosures -which incorporate both living and sleeping areas between a module integrating kitchen and bathroom.

These participants will be scientifically tested in order to investigate the impact of natural light on their biology and wellbeing.

The results will create the blueprint for design to take account of human needs, and are likely to have an impact across the medical, therapy and leisure markets – as well as the global glass industry.

As architect of the Photon House and conceptualiser of the Photon Pod and future living solutions involving greater access to daylight, he is the Strategic Creative Director for the Photon Project. Cantifix has applied its expertise in glass and engineering to develop a specification for the innovative ‘healthy’ glazing used on the Pod – designed to allow the optimum amount of natural daylight into

the interior, whilst still delivering the insulation and solar control required to provide a comfortable living environment. Over the course of the Photon Project this glazing specification will be developed using the latest nano-coatings – towards a surface that responds intuitively to individuals and climatic stimulus, changing colour and transparency for shading and privacy.

The Photon Project will be launched at The London Design Festival between 14th to 22nd September 2013, with a prototype Photon Pod being built outside the Building Centre in Store Street, WC1. Each day will start with a Sunrise Experience (7am – 9am) – where visitors will be scientifically tested on their level of alertness and readiness for the day, and end with a Sunset Experience (6pm – 8pm) – where visitors will be tested on their level of relaxation and readiness for sleep. These tests have been designed specifically for the event by scientists at Harvard and Monash Universities.

The prototype Photon Pod will be accompanied by a Photon Exhibition within the Building Centre, which will guide visitors through the wider vision, ambitions and context of the Photon Project.

The launch event will also feature presentation and discussion sessions, which will be held on the afternoons of Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th September – and will involve international scientists, academics, architects, designers and global corporations who will debate the link between daylight and science, technology, health, wellbeing, architecture and design.

The prototype Photon Pod will be built in association with Philips – who have integrated their latest LED lighting technology to complement and harnomise with the artificial light system, when natural light (daylight) is not available. Wood Awards 2013 Announces Shortlist A shortlist of just 30 has been selected from a record entry of 318 British projects in the Wood Awards 2013, the UK’s premier award scheme celebrating excellence in design in wood.

The Wood Awards is a flagship for wood in the best of British architecture, furniture and design. This year’s 30-strong shortlist features unique private houses, stunning small projects, outstanding restorations, impressive public buildings and extraordinary bespoke and production-made furniture, ranging from the traditional to the cutting edge.

The independent judging panel of architecture, engineering, craftsmanship and design experts and specialists led by Michael Morrison of Purcell UK and

Sean Sutcliffe of Benchmark Furniture now see the shortlist in person before making their final decisions. The winners of the Wood Awards categories and which project will receive the coveted Gold Award - the winner of winners - will be announced on the 19th November at a reception hosted by the Worshipful Company of Carpenters.

Terram Truckpave Upgrades Busy Industrial Depot A large 9000m² site in Oldham Broadway Business Park, owned by Electricity North West Ltd. had been heavily under utilised. This was due to the unstabilised surface within the depot yard, which was prone to flooding and clearly unsuitable for HGVs and even forklift trucks could only be used intermittently, when weather conditions permitted. The options of tarmac or reinforced concrete were quickly discarded, partly due to the cost of stabilisation prior to installation and partly on environmental grounds since the surface water run-off from such a large area would have a significant impact on the surface water drainage network locally.

The ideal solution came from Dunster Consulting Ltd. of Pately Bridge, who had previous experience of Terram Truckpave, Fiberweb’s robust and durable porous pavin. Terram Truckpave 100, laid on a free draining granular stone sub base, was selected as the surface course for this heavily trafficked area, amounting to some 3,700m². Terram Truckpave is extremely simple and quick to install.

Each paver weighs only 12kgs – substantially lighter than concrete alternatives - and is compliant with HSE manual handling limits.

The pavers (600x400x100mm) are simply butted together and the series of cells in each unit offer a void area of 55% which can be filled with angular gravel, or top soiled and seeded to provide a grass finish. Terram Truckpave provides a permanently stable, robust and durable surface laid on a permeable free draining sub-base, achieving a sustainable drainage solution. The paving is flexible and resistant to cracking with high compressive strength. Bridging The Gap - How Stannah Lifts Are Central To The Spectacular New Station In Reading The much-anticipated regeneration of Reading railway station features 14 Stannah bespoke lifts to ensure the easy movement of people and goods to every platform of this multi-million structure. In summer 2012 a huge new passenger bridge, which was constructed alongside the station, was slid into position across the existing tracks. The new station concourse, which opened at Easter 2013, was cleverly created on this gigantic bridge that provides access to every part of the station.

On entering the station from the north side there are two 20-person (1500kg) passenger/goods lifts providing travel to the elevated bridge area. A third matching lift travelling three stops, with a capacity of 20 persons (1500kg), is for staff use only and is operated by a swipe card system. At bridge level these lifts appear as a triplex, adjacent to the escalators.

All the lifts are hydraulically driven and all fourteen motor rooms are housed on the entry level of the station on both the north and south sides of the station. Stannah engineers worked round the clock during an intense three-month period when ten lifts were installed simultaneously to meet deadlines for their clients, Principal Contractor Costain/ Hochtief and Network Rail.

All the Stannah lifting equipment at Reading is supplied with guarantees and will be maintained by the Brackley branch of Stannah Lift Services, covering South Midlands and Home Counties as part of the nationwide service and maintenance contract with Network Rail.

Reynaers Aluminium Proves Energy Efficient For County Hall Bright, airy and a need to reduce energy consumption by 40 per cent were the requirements when Reynaers Aluminium was contracted to provide their quality aluminium window and door solutions for the County Hall in Trowbridge.

Run by Wiltshire County Council, the £22 million refurbishment incorporates a 1930s civic building and a tired 1970s office extension with an underutilised external courtyard. With many stakeholders operating out of the town centre building, flexibility for future developments was key to the design as well as the heavy emphasis on energy efficiency.

The external courtyard is now covered with a new ETFE ‘bubble’ roof, creating a vibrant public space between the existing buildings. The remaining sides of the courtyard are opened up to a new public library, dining area, registry services and meeting rooms, utilising Reynaers glazing systems CW60 SC and capped, CW50 capped, Eco windows and doors and the heavy duty Vision 50 ground entrance.

Offering high performance solutions for a range of specifications, Reynaers CW50 curtain wall systems provided the optimum choice for both thermal insulation and flexibility of design for much of the glazed facades. For the larger, heavier glass surfaces, the thermally improved CW60 curtain wall system – ideal for renovation projects due to its ability to hold a weight of up to 450kg per glass panel within

sloping, vertical and curved constructions, was installed.

Reynaers Eco windows and doors were used for their aesthetically pleasing design combined with high energy efficient properties. These offer a significant contribution to overall efforts to reduce energy consumption due to their 2.20 W/m²K Uf-value, meeting the latest thermal insulation requirements.

Providing 200,000sqft of modern open plan working environment for 1,500 Wiltshire Council employees alone, extremely high durability within ground floor windows and doors was vital. Reynaers Vision 50 door solution is designed specifically for heavy traffic areas such as shopping centres so was the natural choice for the County Hall. Available with a variety of mechanisms for both inward and outward openings, these too provided the high performance and durability along with the flexibility required to meet the aims of the project.

The Main contractor for the project was Kier, working with fabricator System Glaze and Stride Treglown architects. A BREEAM ‘excellent’ rating has been targeted due to the high level of energy savings made via a culmination of energy efficient glazing, thermally upgraded walls and roof and a services overhaul.

Sylglas Metalfix Protects Sea Front Railings Hartlepool Borough Council were experiencing problems with corrosion of the sea front railings which were exhibiting signs of rusting within a few months of applying a coating system. The Council called in Universal Coatings & Services Ltd of Port Clarence, Middlesbrough, who could see that the cause was due to sea water entering the steel work at the joints, where corrosion took place with unsightly rust stains running down the upright bars. To overcome this problem Universal Coatings & Services approached Winn & Coales (Denso) Ltd for advice.

Mapei’s Protective Waterproofing System Provide Watertight Solution Mapei’s cementitious waterproofing products have been installed by contractors Preservation Treatments as part of the refurbishment of Raynes Park Station’s old ticket office in Greater London. Quantity surveyor’s inspection revealed that the old ticket office showed signs of water ingress through sections of the ceiling/soffit; with a crack in the soffit running diagonally from side to side and vertically down both walls. Kubex Showers Grace Halls Of Learning Hotham Court is a purpose built Hall of Residence for the University of Creative Arts at Canterbury catering for the needs of a total of 107 students.

A recent major refurbishment undertaken by Coombs [Canterbury] Ltd. included the replacement of some 56 shower cubicles and clearly, in a student environment, not only the need for efficiency and hygiene had to be met but also robust reliability had to be taken into consideration.

Fortunately Hotham Court had previously installed 20 Kubex shower units in 2011 and these had proved more than adequate to meet all those requirements plus the compact size necessary in an en-suite single student living area. As a result it was an easy decision to call on Kubex UK Ltd. of Hull to supply the replacement shower cubicles. Sustainable Theatre Saves Water With Roca Arcola Theatre in Hackney is one of the most respected arts venues in the UK, with a commitment to sustainability as well as creativity. Arcola’s aim is to be the first carbon neutral theatre in the world; it has a sustainability/education arm Green Arcola and a sister company, Arcola Energy, an energy technology incubator, both set up to deliver this ambition Over the last three years, Arcola, housed in a converted paint factory, has undergone a ‘green’ transformation, including the installation of a waste wood biomass boiler, natural ventilation system and an innovative LED lighting system, powered by solar photovoltaics. The building also boasts impressive water-saving credentials thanks to Roca’s innovative W+W (water closet and washbasin) product.

Funded by a £1 million grant from the Arts Council, plus additional support from donations and local volunteers, main renovation works took place in 2012, with Roca’s W+W installed last summer.

Making W+W work even harder is the Singles-Pro basin mixer, which features Roca’s innovative Cold Start system, designed to help save both water and energy. The progressive cartridge means the tap turns on with cold water first, drawing on the hot supply only as and when it’s required.

Iconic Canada Water ‘Super Library’ Featuring Technal Curtain Walling Wins Major Architectural Award Southwark Council’s iconic new ‘super library’ in Canada Water, London, has won a major award in recognition of its outstanding design and contribution to the local community. The scheme features façade systems from architectural aluminium specialist, Technal, that were specified by CZWG Architects. Spearheading an ambitious programme of regeneration, Canada Water Library resembles an inverted terraced pyramid of successively receding storeys that partly overhang the Canada Water basin. The project has now won a Civic Trust Special Award.

The Civic Trust Awards recognise the very best in architecture, design, planning, landscape and public art. Awards are given to projects of the highest quality design that have made a positive cultural, social or economic contribution to the local community. Special Awards reward those schemes, such as Canada Water Library, which are particularly outstanding in their field.

Finished in bronze anodising, Technal’s GEODE-MX SSG structural glazing and commercial doors have been used for the ground floor of the library.

GEODE-MX Visible Grid features as strips of curtain walling to the three upper floors of the building, with GEODE-MX top hung concealed vents for natural ventilation and PXi doors providing access to the balconies. GEODE-MX SSG is a flush curtain walling option which meets specifiers’ requirements for less visible aluminium and clear expanses of glass.

Commenting on the glazing specification, Anna Ifanti, Associate at CZWG Architects said, “The Technal team was very responsive at specification stage and their input in

the design and choice of glazing options was helpful and valuable. We needed the façade systems to be robust, lightweight, have slim frames and to meet the required U values, which the Technal products were able to deliver. We are very happy with the end result.”

Constructed by ISG Jackson, the £14m building sits at the edge of a new civic plaza and a stretch of open water. Its expanding pyramid form integrates a compact footprint at ground level with progressively wider floors above. The building is clad in light bronze anodised aluminium panels with sequined perforations, interspersed with recessed curtain wall screens. This design gives the scheme a sculptural appeal and a striking visual effect, symbolising ‘the crown jewel to the new plaza’.

The Technal curtain walling is complemented by FXi65 tilt/turn casement windows used as ‘punched hole’ openings set into the cladding.

The Canada Water Library has strong environmental credentials, with ground source heat pumps, grey water harvesting, energy efficient M&E services, and an extensive green sedum roof. The canted east and west elevations allow winter sun to warm the building and provide a high degree of solar shading for the glazing in the summer, minimising glare. The scheme achieved a BREEAM ‘very good’ rating.

The Canada Water Masterplan was created by master developers BL Canada Quays in conjunction with Southwark Council and includes around 900 new homes, as well as retail, community and public spaces.

United Utilities Choose Recycled Modular Buildings For New Office Accommodation Three recycled and refurbished modular buildings have been provided by Foremans Relocatable Building Systems to United Utilities – the company which supplies water and sewage services to around seven million people and 200,000 businesses in the North West. The buildings were needed on two sites to upgrade office accommodation and replace outdated facilities with purpose-designed office space and meeting rooms. Completion was just 10 weeks after receipt of order.

At Gatewarth Industrial Estate in Warrington, a 22-module scheme is occupied by around 85 staff. Facilities include open plan offices, meeting rooms, managers’ offices, kitchen, toilets and customer service reception.

A smaller Foremans building is used as a purpose-built meeting room suite. In St Helens, an 8-module building is now in use 24/7 providing interim office accommodation for 17 staff and up to 30 shift workers while another site is redeveloped.

Each building was delivered to site around 70 per cent complete, reducing disruption to United Utilities’ operations. Foremans also supplied folding partitions, roller security shutters, air conditioning, and fire and security alarms.

Commenting on the choice of recycled modular buildings, Gary Collins, Building Surveyor at United Utilities, said, “Each of these three projects was delivered on

time, as expected and to very high quality standards. Foremans also gave us the opportunity to spec the buildings to our exact service needs. Feedback from the users has been extremely positive and staff have been unable to tell these are not brand new buildings.”

“We would definitely use the approach again. Indeed, having experienced recycled modular buildings, it is now unlikely we would specify new build going forward because the quality of Foremans pre-owned is so good and the cost is considerably less.”

United Utilities is investing more than £3 billion in improving the water and wastewater infrastructure and the environment across the North West, covering over 42,000km of water pipes from Cumbria to Cheshire, over 76,000km of sewers, and 569 wastewater treatment works.

The use of recycled Portakabin buildings is one of the most environmentally sound methods of construction. It generates less than 10 per cent of the carbon emissions and uses less than 3 per cent of the energy during construction, compared to a newly manufactured building of equivalent size (source: MPBA/Arup). Other benefits include programme times reduced by up to 70 per cent, reduced cost, and the buildings can be easily expanded, reconfigured or removed if an organisation’s requirements change.

Shackerley’s Contribution To Liverpool Central Library Is Written In Stone Shackerley has supplied two of the most visible new external architectural elements at Liverpool Central Library, now reopened to the public after a £50m project to transform the facility into a state-of-the-art civic centre. Behind the retained Grade II listed Victorian frontages is a stunning new five-storey library and archive repository building, the external elevations of which have been predominantly clad with Shackerley’s Sureclad® ceramic granite ventilated façade system. The new façades have a distinctive style, featuring randomly positioned panels of varying widths in a palette of carefully selected natural tones.

In addition to supplying over 2200m2 of prefabricated ‘installation ready’ ceramic granite cladding, Shackerley also utilised specialist in-house facilities at its ISO 9001 accredited Lancashire factory to create the Library’s 20m high ‘Literary Wall’ – a gleaming black roll-call of famous authors, playwrights and poets associated with Liverpool, engraved in gold lettering on large format solid granite panels, cut to bespoke sizes measuring up to 2800x600x30mm.

Architect Ben Aston of Austin- Smith: Lord commented: “Shackerley offers ceramic granite in an extensive range of colours and finishes from which we selected our tonal palette of neutral colours with a natural unpolished finish. The flexibility of the Sureclad® system allowed panels of different sizes to be used, achieving the non-monolithic appearance required.”

“For the Literary Wall we wanted a high quality polished black stone that would retain its good looks in all weathers. Granite is by no means an easy material to work with but Shackerley had the specialist in-house cutting, drilling and engraving facilities to supply everything we needed.”

Marmox Aids Conversion At Hackney’s Village Green The Village Green is the latest project from Creative Network Partners. Set in Hackney Downs Studios, The Village Green is a brand new independent East End experience; a shopping and cultural development initially incorporating five local small businesses but with the possibility of further expansion.

Architects Iolanda Bianchi and Mirko Lupo’s conversion task involved a great deal of creative restoration and adaptation as they set out to transform the Studios from a large, fairly open works area into the attractive Village Green format of five separate shops.

Two of the conversion problems were the need to build a new mezzanine floor structure above the shops and to ensure that the interiors of the shopping areas were quiet and intimate. These two problems were actually rolled into one as the Architects used Marmox Heraklith Wood Wool Panels as the cover material and as the final decoration layer. Heraklith wood wool panels are a natural product consisting of certified spruce wood, which originates in North European timber production forests and are produced with respect for the highest ecological, social and ethical standards. Heraklith panels are multipurpose and can be used internally or externally on walls, floors and ceilings. Being designed with an open surface structure they hold great acoustic properties that contribute to a quieter and more comfortable living and working space.

These hygroscopic panels allow the building to breathe by absorbing the moisture in the air and releasing it back when most needed, when it’s dry. They are also renowned for their fire proofing qualities and in the event of fire they will protect for up to 90 minutes allowing ceiling and wall constructions to stay intact. ISO Energy Delivers £6K Savings For Listed Wiltshire Property The energy bill for heating and hot water incurred by the owners of a large country house in Wiltshire is expected to be reduced by as much as £6,000 a year, following the installation of a ground source heat pump solution by green technologies specialist, ISO Energy. The 17th century property, which is in the William & Mary style with accommodation over three floors has, until now relied on an oil fired boiler for warmth. Fuel prices, though, had rocketed in recent years, while repetitive maintenance was a further burden on the estate’s owners.

However, when ISO Energy surveyed the Grade II* listed house and surrounding grounds last autumn, its engineers realised there was clear potential for the place to benefit from the renewable heat energy, which can be harvested by a ground source heat pump. For while in many instances, these high performance units have to be linked to pipework drilled deep into bedrock, the proximity of a 10 acre field was the ideal location to install relatively shallow ground arrays. While the existing boiler room towards the rear of the house was plenty large enough to accommodate two large light commercial high temperature heat pumps and the necessary hot water storage, the fabric of the building still presented challenging load conditions.

Despite being altered, added to and renovated several times over the centuries, the building’s construction of brick and stone, along with many large single-glazed sash windows, offers minimal insulation standards.

Nevertheless, ISO Energy’s survey and calculations concluded that the combination of a 10 kW and 34 kW CTC heat pump, with a nominal primary flow temperature of 65º degrees centigrade, would be adequate to provide good levels of comfort for the occupants using the existing radiators. Meanwhile the supply of domestic hot water from the trio of factory insulated, 800 litre storage vessels would far outstrip the performance of the original system.

ISO Energy duly organized the installation of a fan shaped array of ground collectors that spread out across the field, navigating their way around the established

broadleaf trees. A total of 11 separate 300 metre long, 40 mm diameter collectors connect back to a manifolds, which is in turn linked to the plant room by the 65 metre long flow and return pipework.

A spokesperson for ISO Energy comments: “There is a perception amongst architects and even some M&E consultants that heat pumps are only suitable for use in highly insulated properties with fairly low demand for heating and hot water. What this project in Wiltshire demonstrates, however, is that even a centuries old structure with very poor U-values and Grade II listing preventing any real improvement, can still have all its heating and hot water demands met using ground source heat pumps. Linking them to ground arrays keeps the capital cost down while the annual saving compared to relying on an oil boiler is going to be in the region of £6k p.a.

That is impressive enough but when annual subsidies [partly estimated until the Renewable Heat Incentive Phase 2 is in place] of well over £7k are added, the figures are truly remarkable.

“The large storage capacity provided enables the heat pumps to run for long cycles which makes them more efficient than stop-start operation; while the controls are very straightforward for the occupants to use.”

CTC EcoPart heat pumps can be connected in series to meet the needs of the largest private residence and most commercial buildings including schools, hospitals and even swimming pools. They can draw their renewable energy from either subsoil, hard bedrock or lakes and can deliver it - via their advanced refrigerant gas cycles, offering seasonally adjusted coefficients of performance (COP) of up to 4.5 – through new or existing radiator and under-floor heating circuits.
