Portakabin Hands Over The First Complete Primary School In England To Be Built Using Modular Construction Portakabin has handed over the first complete primary school in England to be built using modular construction. The scheme for Leeds City Council is also the first project to be constructed using the brand new Portakabin modular building system. The new primary school forms part of Carr Manor Community School which is now one of only two ‘through’ schools in Leeds, taking pupils from the age of 4 to 18. It will ultimately accommodate 210 children, helping to address the rapid growth in demand for primary provision in the area. The £3m purpose-designed building was successfully delivered by Portakabin on time and on budget after only six months on site, in time for the start of the new academic year. It has a bright and contemporary design which reflects the architectural features of the adjacent secondary school, creating a distinctive campus feel for the site. Commenting on the scheme, Kevin Jones, Director and General Manager of Portakabin Sales, said, “The success of this project, its aesthetics and the quality of the finished building have taken modular construction to a new level and we believe it will help change perceptions about just what Portakabin building solutions can now
achieve. This is an exceptional building, constructed to the highest standards, for an outstanding school and a visionary client. The new building system has brought significant advancements in the look, feel, sound and floor quality of the building – and has exceeded Building Regulations for thermal performance.” Harry Rayat, Operations Manager at Carr Manor Community School, said, “The new school is just fantastic. The modular approach allowed us to achieve a tight deadline for the start of the new academic year when we had to provide additional reception places.” He added, “We have been very impressed with the speed and quality of construction. Portakabin clearly understands our sector and was very professional throughout. This was a challenging site but their team worked extremely hard and repeatedly went above and beyond to overcome any unforeseen site issues. This really is a first class building and a credit to the design and delivery teams.” Facilities include seven classrooms each with a sheltered outdoor play space, a sports and dining hall, reception area and foyer, hygiene room with hoist, special educational needs room, catering kitchen, offices,

staff room, library, and food and science technology room. Trees have been retained on the site and green areas extended allowing the school to develop outdoor classrooms. The scale and shape of the building features details such as an inclined roof and a palette of colours for the façades that reflect the design of the secondary school. Large picture windows ensure high levels of natural light and allow views over the adjacent field, and opening roof lights naturally ventilate other areas of the building. The new Portakabin building system brought a number of innovations to this project, including: The use of larger 3.75m wide and 16.5m long modules which reduced the number of units by almost half – resulting in fewer vehicle movements to site, less cranage and reduced work on site Fewer internal columns and a flat façade with no visible structural columns A new wall construction which has delivered improved thermal performance and exceeded Building Regulations requirements
A more solid and robust feel for the building A greater variety of coloured finishes for the building envelope A wider choice of glazing options, including windows with sills and reveals. The new Portakabin modular building system also now has the benefit of a 30-year structural warranty and five-year product warranty, and the widest range of module lengths, widths and heights to suit almost any site, building footprint or configuration. Foremans Helps Sutton Primary School Meet Increasing Demand For Places – In Just 6 Weeks Demographic changes and rising birth rates across the UK have resulted in a huge increase in the demand for primary school places. As a result, many schools are turning to modular construction as a solution to expand or redevelop primary teaching accommodation. In Sutton, the Ofsted ‘outstanding’ Avenue Primary School needs to increase its capacity by around 30 per cent, from 682 to 892 pupils by 2016 to meet the growing demand for reception places. In order to accommodate an additional 88 pupils for the 2012/13 academic year in the first phase in its expansion, and to provide interim classrooms for the next four years while other buildings on the site are refurbished and redeveloped, Foremans Relocatable Building Systems has supplied two teaching blocks at the school. Foremans had to deliver the buildings to a very tight timescale – just six weeks from receipt of order – in time for the start of the new school year. This was successfully achieved. The buildings were refurbished Portakabin buildings – two double classroom blocks purchased from a school in the North West. They were broken down to their modular components, reassembled and refurbished at the Foremans production centre in East Yorkshire, before being installed at Avenue Primary School. Commenting on the project, Alex Clark, Head Teacher at Avenue Primary School said, “We needed four interim classrooms for the phased expansion of our school. Foremans was actually the only company which could deliver this project in the required timescale. Their approach also appealed to us because it is more sustainable as the building modules are recycled and refurbished and making it more cost effective.”
“The classrooms are finished to a very high standard and you would never know these buildings aren’t new. We like their size and their robust, permanent feel – they are certainly completely different from the temporary classrooms of old.” “Foremans made this project very straightforward. It was managed effectively and professionally, delivered to a challenging deadline and provided a solution for our capacity requirements that really worked for us.” Foremans specialises in refurbishing Portakabin buildings. In order to meet individual project requirements and budgets, the buildings can be supplied decorated or fully refurbished with new windows, wall linings, partitions, mechanical and electrical services, doors, flooring, and cladding, to create high quality accommodation for a wide variety of interim and permanent education applications. The advantages of this approach include: Programme times reduced by up to 70 per cent A highly cost-effective alternative to new build The buildings can easily be expanded, reconfigured or removed for complete flexibility should local requirements change Off-site working is maximised for safer, quieter and cleaner sites and reduced disruption to teaching during construction High quality steel-framed modular buildings are built to last The buildings require fewer ground works than site-based construction – further reducing cost, disruption and programme times. Non-Com Exterior Fire Protection For Wolverhampton School The design of Wolverhampton’s newest school, South Wolverhampton and Bilston Academy, includes the extensive use of external Siberian larch cladding protected with Lonza Wood Protection’s Non-Com Exterior fire retardant. The facade of the new academy building is made up of 50,000 linear metres of Siberian larch provided by Berkshire-based BCL Timber Projects. As well as providing an attractive facade, this wooden rainscreen cladding protects the building against water damage and traps a layer of air as additional thermal insulation. The timber is protected with Lonza’s Non-Com Exterior fire retardant, which provides a proven and highly effective Euroclass B surface spread of flame protection, without affecting the external appearance of the wood. Non-Com Exterior is a polymer-based formulation applied by vacuum-pressure impregnation, and timber treated with it can then be used with or without additional coatings. www.lonza.com Enquiry No 8
Kemper System Is Top Of The Class For Liquid Waterproofing Kemper System’s ‘Stratex’ warm roof system was the ideal solution for Castle Contractors when it recently completed the refurbishment of a high school assembly hall roof. Matthew Moss High School in Rochdale had benefitted from a wide ranging internal refurbishment of the school’s main hall as part of an extensive build programme. In order to upgrade the building to Part L building regulation standards the school decided to upgrade the roof too. The Kemper System solution was chosen for its performance, speed of installation and the 25 year BBA certified expected working life of the Kemperol waterproofing membrane. Castle Contractors began by preparing the original felt roof and then bonding 120mm tongue & groove Kempertherm insulation board directly onto the existing waterproofing. The insulation was then primed using Kemper System’s Kemperol ‘D’ Primer and, once the primer had cured, the team was able to apply the Kemperol V210 waterproofing. Kemperol liquid waterproofing is laid in a single process saturating a reinforcement fleece which cannot delaminate and cures to form a seamless, hard wearing, elastomeric membrane. The Kempertherm insulation board successfully enhanced the building’s thermal performance in line with current Part L requirements to achieve a u-value of 0.18W/m2K. www.kempersystem.co.uk Enquiry No 9

Yorkon Awarded 1st Contract For Its Revolutionary New Off-Site Building System Off-site construction specialist, Yorkon, has been awarded the first contract to be built using its revolutionary new building system. The scheme for Kier Construction will provide three two-storey curriculum wings for a new secondary school in the village of Cambourne in Cambridgeshire. The 7,000 sqm project for Cambridgeshire County Council is the first new secondary school to be constructed in the county for 30 years, and is Yorkon’s second scheme for Kier Construction. The project will accommodate 750 pupils aged 11 to 16, helping to meet the growing demand for secondary school places following an increase in housing provision and rising birth rates in the area that are significantly higher than national trends. Designed by Frank Shaw Associates and due for completion early Summer 2013, the project is embracing modern methods of construction to deliver the new school. The use of off-site construction for the curriculum wings will help to reduce the programme time to just 35 weeks. A cross laminated timber structure will be used for the central core that accommodates the larger communal spaces such as the dining and sports halls and gym. Commenting on the project, Simon Bates, Contracts Manager at Kier Construction, said “In order for the new building to be fully operational for the Council’s deadline next year, the time available for construction was reduced. Taking an off-site approach for the project was the ideal solution, which allowed us to reduce the programme. This project follows the success of our work with Yorkon on a major healthcare scheme in Colchester, where we were impressed with the speed and quality of their building system.”
The new Yorkon steel-framed building system will reduce the number of modules needed for the teaching areas by around half, to just 60 large 18m long units. This solution is more sustainable because it reduces the vehicle movements to site, there will be less cranage and less work on site. There will also be fewer internal columns to facilitate space planning. Other improvements with the new building system include: Enhanced architectural detailing – the windows will have reveals and cills rather than openings that are flush with the face of the walls The use of the very latest open pour polyurethane insulation technology will deliver even better thermal performance and U values for lower running costs and reduced carbon emissions. Each module will be delivered to site with a pre-installed concrete floor, further reducing work on site, improving quality control and providing a robust finish for a demanding secondary school environment. The circulation areas open on to the central mall with no divisions between circulation zones to allow passive surveillance to reduce bullying and anti-social behaviour. The ends of the wings will be punctuated with full height stair towers and a balcony at first floor level serving as an additional outdoor space for each block. The new Yorkon building system has been launched following a three-year development and testing programme which has included significant investment in state-of-the-art production facilities in York – now the most advanced facility of its kind in Europe. GEZE UK Receives Top Marks For Integrated Approach A collaborative approach from two of the UK’s leading building and access companies is literally opening doors for young people in wheelchairs at a specialist School and College in Hampshire. Osborne, a leader in the education building sector, asked GEZE UK to help create a bespoke access solution for Treloar School and College in Hampshire, which caters for residential and day students from the age of 7 to 25 with a range of physical disabilities and associated learning difficulties. The new £20million national centre of excellence needed to be secure, and it clearly needed to be highly accessible in accordance with the Equality Act, but the developers wanted to go even further. When looking at controlled access solutions which used swipe cards to authorise entry, Osborne and GEZE UK recognised that many of the college’s wheelchair-bound students were in fact swifter around campus than their peers and that this standard system would hamper their ability to get around quickly. It was decided that each wheelchair would be fitted with a proximity tag, which would open doors throughout the campus as the student approached, reducing the need for them to stop at entrances. GEZE UK’s Slimdrive SF operators were integrated with a special access control system, which meant that the proximity tags would pre-trigger the radar on each automatic door, ensuring it opened in time. Able-bodied users would continue to use a regular swipe tag system. Folding doors were chosen to maximise the opening width of each entrance, essential for busy areas. www.geze.co.uk Enquiry No 11
Pyroguard Delivers Premium Fire Protection for Exclusive Student Accommodation Pyroguard EI30 INT fire resistant glazing from CGI International has been installed at a new student residence in Leicester, to deliver fire protection far superior to current building regulation requirements. Olympic Commission Paves Way for Public Art Tile Murals Two major, ceramic murals commissioned for the Olympic Park, London involved the development of tile technology never previously thought possible on such a vast scale. The Shropshire tile company responsible was Craven Dunnill Jackfield, which is now applying its expertise to other public art commissions in the UK and overseas. Carpenter’s Curve and Brick Field by the British artist Clare Woods were commissioned by the Contemporary Art Society for the Olympic Delivery Authority. The murals are staggeringly large and intricate and clad the walls of two utilities buildings in what is now called the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, adjacent to the Westfield Shopping Centre. The artwork was inspired by the original industrial site, historical maps of the area and Woods’s own experience from once having a studio close-by. The artistic process was unique for Woods – she was not only working to a fixed budget and timeframe but had to trust Jackfield to translate her work into ceramics. Destined to be part of the cultural legacy, the tiles and fixing had to be UV, frost and fade resistant. Combining age-old glaze effects with stateof-the-art, digital printing and intricate, water-jet cutting created a mathematical conundrum of boggling complexity. The murals measure 757.2m² and feature over 30,000 tiles in a myriad of shapes and sizes; the tiles took over six months to make and involved 4.5 kilometres of intricate water jet cutting. Subsequently, Craven Dunnill Jackfield has gone on to create two further smaller sized murals, demonstrating the versatility of the manufacturing technique. At Hereford Cathedral Junior School 300 paintings by children and staff have been merged
with a section of Woods’ original artwork for the Olympic Park. The resulting tile mural celebrates the Diamond Jubilee, the 2012 London Olympics, the school and the county of Herefordshire and was officially opened on 27th September 2012. At Much Wenlock a Public Art Trail, sited at William Brookes School, was commissioned by the William Penny Brookes Foundation for the people of Much Wenlock, to celebrate the town’s heritage and its role in the birth of the modern Olympic Games; it includes a 7m by 2m double-sided tile mural wall, featuring a section of Brick Field. Adrian Blundell, Production Director at Craven Dunnill Jackfield was instrumental in the successful completion of all three projects, on time and within budget, and has worked on a variety of public art projects with both celebrated and local artists. He explains that each project involves its own unique and unforeseen challenges and concludes: “Whether the mural is a modest picture size or on a vast scale such as in the Olympic Park, our approach is the same: we establish trust and empathy with the artist, combine a bottomless pit of technical know-how with careful planning, and respond flexibly to whatever challenges come our way – in my experience the end result is always worth the effort”. Making Student Housing Safer A leading specialist student housing provider has demonstrated an exemplary approach to tenant safety by installing Kidde Fyrnetics hardwired smoke, heat and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms. The London Student Group provides students with high specification refurbished 5 and 6 bedroom shared HMO accommodation in traditional Victorian houses. Originally, they were fitted with Kidde’s battery powered smoke and CO alarms but in each property these have now been replaced with a comprehensive system of Kidde Fyrnetics Slick® alarms using wireless interconnect. Every bedroom now has its own smoke alarm, as well as circulation areas, and there are heat alarms in communal living areas and kitchens. In addition, Kidde Fyrnetics hard-wired CO alarms with digital displays are installed on each floor. London Student Group’s CEO Rob Hunter said: “This project aimed to meet two objectives. We wanted to be the first multi-site ‘off street’ landlord in London to be accredited under the AFS Unipol Code, an accreditation scheme operated by Unipol – the main UK student housing charity – and Accommodation For Students – the main UK student accommodation search engine - which we have now achieved. We also acted in advance of an anticipated additional licensing scheme to be imposed by the local council under Section 56 of the Housing Act 2004, as we are always keen to stay ahead of the game. We chose Kidde for its reputation and, crucially, because of the high quality technical telephone support offered when we did our pre-ordering research.” www.smoke-alarms.co.uk Enquiry No 14

Coloured Façade Sensation At York University A stunning combination of VMZINC QUARTZ-ZINC® and PIGMENTO® vertical interlocking façade panels have been specified by architects BDP in their design of the £80 million University of York campus expansion at Heslington East. BDP was invited to masterplan and design the individual buildings, the cladding inspiration for which was explained by Project Architect Andrew Lees. “Our vision for the design was prompted by the rural surroundings and specifically by the lakeside location. We felt that the elevations should reflect colours which stemmed from flora such as bulrushes. Though we were not initially familiar with the Pigmento colour range we subsequently realised that their subtle shades of grey, green and red would enable us to create a colour palette which was visually analogous to the rhythm of multi-stemmed plants”. Initially the cladding specified was coloured fibrous cement panels. During the detailed design stage, however, the VMZINC system proved to be a more economical solution with the added benefit that installation could take place during winter months. 3-metre long
panels in 375mm and 400mm widths were used to suit the structural modules with a continuous 20 mm ventilated air gap behind the boarding of the entire façade. The architects are particularly pleased with the way in which the zinc responds to changing light conditions and viewing angles of the multi-facetted facades. Andrew Lees added, “A particularly satisfying feature of the zinc is the crisp shadow gap that is achieved between adjacent panels. This gives the skin of the building a textured sophistication and the ability to form a continuous ‘wrap’ around both the straight and curved sections of the façade”. Housed in two wings overlooking the existing lake and embracing a courtyard garden The first phase has undergraduate and postgraduate software laboratories and two more in which the Human-Computer Interaction research group undertakes much of its work. A fully glazed atrium connects the wings at all levels while a glass link leads to the seminar and common room pod which nestles in the centre of the courtyard as a garden pavilion. This organic timber structure acts as a counterpoint to the zinc clad wings that surround it. The last words go to fellow Project Architect Tony Robinson who said, “The VM zinc product was the making of Computer Science and Law and Management Buildings” Elizabeth Heaps, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University added, “The buildings are absolutely stunning. They are so striking and aesthetically they are just brilliant”. Enquiry No 16

RMIG Perforated Solar Shading Keeps The Heat Off French School A distinctive and creative solar shading solution has been manufactured by RMIG to help reduce the risk of building and classroom overheating while improving the comfort for students at the Lycée Polyvalent de Vienne in the Saint Romain en Gal area of France. The perforated metal solar shading forms part of a recent project to restructure and extend the school while incorporating a range of energy efficient and environmentally beneficial initiatives in the overall design. The architects’ vision for the solar shading was to create a unique structure that joins together multiple triangular sections of perforated metal to create a three-dimensional ‘bat-wing’ effect on the front of the building that not only added to its aesthetics, but also provided a highly effective sunscreen. The solution involves 180 sunscreens manufactured from 2mm thick galvanised steel incorporating seven different diameter circular perforations in a special RMIG ‘Cloud’ design layout, which provides an apparently random pattern across the surface of each screen. RMIG developed and tested prototypes to ensure that the final perforation solution and forming processes for each of the 3.6m x 1.1m sunscreens would not only provide effective shading, but also be uncomplicated to install on site. During this process it was found that the sunscreen’s irregular angles prevented the original uniform perforation pattern from being used, as it would not fit perfectly within the triangular panel shapes. As a result, RMIG developed the random pattern solution using seven different sized perforations ranging from 8mm up to 50mm in diameter. www.rmig.com Enquiry No 18

Carea Cladding Provides Top Class Finish At Kirklees College’s New Waterfront Campus At the new £74 million Waterfront Campus for Kirklees College in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, approximately 1,500m2 of Ardal cladding from Carea has helped to create a stylish dark-grey façade for the facility’s new Learning Resources Centre (LRC). Designed by global architecture, urbanism and design practice Broadway Malyan and built by main contractor Allenbuild, the new 24,000m2 college centre forms a key part of the Waterfront complex – a mixed-use development project for Kirklees Council. Once complete, the campus building will provide 16,000 students with 21st century learning facilities and resources from a nine-storey ‘multi-block’ of classrooms and the cube-shaped LRC. With environmental performance and an attractive finish two key requirements at the project, it was crucial that the cladding system complemented the scheme’s overall aesthetic whilst contributing to the building achieving its targeted BREEAM rating of ‘excellent’ for low environmental impact. For this, Carea’s Ardal cladding with Shell finish was specified in a dark grey, speckled Basalte.
Manufactured from cutting edge exclusive mineral composite developed over thirty years by the company’s expert technicians, Carea cladding panels provide excellent thermal efficiency and eliminate cold bridging. Comprising around 95% natural minerals – they offered a highly sustainable choice which would provide the performance benefits required to help the building achieve the ‘excellent’ BREEAM rating. Offering such excellent insulation levels, the Carea panels will play a pivotal role in the building’s long term thermal efficiency, lowering its heating costs and aiding sustainability – vital for meeting building regulations and the demands of all contemporary education projects. Available in over 30 different shades and a range of textures, Carea panels can also be supplied in a variety of sizes. Carea cladding is supplied with specially designed horizontal rails so they can be easily fixed to vertical brackets. In January 2013, the new Waterfront Campus will replace Kirklees College’s current building on Huddersfield’s New North Road. With some 230 rooms of cutting edge learning facilities, as well as the stylish and high performance cladding system from Carea, the centre will provide state-of-the-art learning facilities for many years to come. Howe Green’s Tree Pit Covers Keep The Wintergarden Growing Greener Bluewater’s new social dining experience at The Wintergarden is open for business. Featuring different seating areas created with an intelligent blend of materials, colours and finishes, the contemporary new dining space designed by Leslie Jones incorporates seven ornamental trees to add to the aesthetics and help bring a touch of the outside in. Howe Green, leading manufacturer of access cover solutions, designed and supplied made-to measure-tree pit covers in stainless steel for the project. These bespoke panels and frames facilitate access to the root chamber and make for straightforward maintenance of the highly valuable trees. They also enable the 4,000m2 area of Limestone and Travertine flooring in The Wintergarden to continue uninterrupted to within just millimetres of the tree trunks for a seamless and monolithic effect. Made from 304-grade stainless steel, each was manufactured to individual size specifications to fit with the tile grid, accommodate light fittings and the tree pit void underneath. Resistant to rust and corrosion, they are also double sealed to prevent moisture or dirt ingress, helping to further protect the tree and keep soil free from contamination. Howe Green is a customer-focused company and many of their existing access covers have been developed as the result of a request for a solution to a particular access problem or situation. Tree pit covers were originally developed to answer such a need but have since been specified for many prestigious interior and exterior landscape projects including One Hyde Park and Heathrow’s T5. www.howegreen.com Enquiry No 21

Dow Building Solutions - manufacturer of STYROFOAM-A and XENERGY extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation - has become a member of the Passivhaus Trust in recognition of the role its products can play in Passivhaus construction. The Passivhaus Trust is an independent, nonprofit organisation that aims to promote the principles of Passivhaus as a highly effective way of reducing energy use and carbon emissions from buildings in the UK, as well as providing high standards of comfort and building health. Passivhaus standard buildings retain heat created within them as well as generating passive solar gain, eliminating the need for central heating and reducing fuel costs. The Passivhaus standard requires, amongst other things, very high levels of insulation (in order to meet U-values of below 0.15 W/m2K for walls, roof and floor), a design that makes the most of solar energy and superb sealing throughout. www.styrofoam.co.uk www.passivhaustrust.org.uk

PRP - Master-Planning With Paving The trade association Interpave has just published another of its ‘Master-Planning with Paving’ case studies – updated and expanded with recent site visits. It looks at how precast concrete surfaces, including permeable paving, form an important part of the hard landscaping palette of PRP - a major practice involved with a diversity of projects. PRP is one of the world’s largest multidisciplinary practices, specialising in sustainable residential and mixed-use design. It has a specialist Landscape division, involved from the start in master-planning projects alongside its other designers and consultants. The Interpave case study explores several major new housing schemes, each with phases at a different stage of development ranging from early design through to completion on site. It demonstrates an exemplary approach where PRP consider detailed design and execution on site to be central to successful hard landscaping. It also showcases how precast concrete block and flag paving and kerbs can give visual interest and a human scale not possible with monotonous, formless materials. In recent years, Interpave manufacturers have transformed this concept, moving away from simple, regular patterns and colours to expand an extensive palette of styles, shapes, colours and textures to meet current demands in urban design. These can match – and often exceed – the visual qualities of materials such as stone. www.paving.org.uk Enquiry No 31

Gary’s Asian Cycle Marathon Raises Cash For Charity Polypipe Building Products Regional Sales Manager Gary Foord – plastic plumbing’s answer to Bradley Wiggins – has just completed a charity bike ride in South East Asia from Vietnam to Cambodia in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society. 470km of often dusty roads and jungle tracks took Gary and his compatriots from Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam to Siem Reap in Cambodia over an eight day period during which he says he saw some of the most amazing sights he’s ever seen en route, including the Royal Temples of Angkor Wat. Gary says it was a great experience albeit it was tough at times: “Temperatures varied between 36 and 46 degrees centigrade so not necessarily the weather to be on a bike! But it was great knowing that what I was doing was benefitting a really worthwhile charity.” Gary’s ride has raised in excess of £4,700 for the Alzheimers Society so far and expects to exceed £5,000 once all donations come in. There are 750,000 people in the UK that suffer from forms of dementia and the Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading support service and research charity for people with dementia and their carers. “I’m really grateful to everyone who helped me to undertake the South Asia ride – individuals who contributed, PTS and of course Polypipe who were major supporters and fund raising helpers,” says Gary. www.polypipe.co.uk Enquiry No 34

The Nationwide Windows approach has always been, not to simply install windows into houses, but to install them into peoples' homes. It’s often these softer parts of a partnering arrangement that make the difference between success and failure. Winning the Community Focused Contractor award certainly endorses this approach.” www.nationwidewindows.co.uk Enquiry No 35
Belfast Project Honoured In 2012 Brick Awards For the second year running, a building in Belfast won the Best Public Building Category at the 2012 Brick Awards. The MAC, a new arts building in Belfast, designed by architects Hackett Hall McKnight, followed in the footsteps of the 2011 Awards winner, Belfast’s Lyric Theatre. The MAC reflects its location in Belfast and the surrounding heritage of mills and warehouses. Architect Ian McKnight commented: “Belfast is a brick city. The buildings of its hey-day were all constructed in brick, using simple, legible construction. We sought to create a building that reflects this heritage not only in its resilience and constructional legibility, but also in its warmth and texture and essential humanity”. Brick is the dominant finish both externally and within the main foyer, which is dominated along one side by a four storey wall of brick piers. The brick selection was undertaken with great care with the architects choosing Wienerberger’s Mellowed Red Sovereign Stock brick because it reflected the regularity of bricks typically used in Belfast in the 19th an 20th centuries. The project also went on to win the Supreme Award, the Brick Development Association’s Building of the Year. The Brick Awards is one of Britain’s most respected design competitions. Organised by the Brick Development Association, the annual contest provides the definitive showcase for what brick can achieve. This year, there were a record number of entries, with projects from right across the globe. www.brick.org.uk Enquiry No 36

Mobilane Works With Researchers And Clients To Highlight Benefits Of Well-Designed Green Spaces Mobilane has embarked on a pioneering partnership with Staffordshire University help existing and potential customers understand how wellmanaged green planted spaces can enhance wellbeing and solve social and environmental problems. From improving mental health and reducing crime to improving air quality, the issues that the installation of a well-designed green space can resolve are diverse. In order to put these benefits on a more scientific footing, Mobilane and Staffordshire University are asking businesses – whether from the private or public sector – to come up with suggestions of what areas they would like investigating. Scientists from the university will then work with the company and Mobilane to research the precise benefits that an intelligently designed green space can yield in a particular area, for example building insulation, employee attendance rates or an improvement in general human wellbeing. Some research by is currently under way with a study investigating how successful carefully designed green spaces can be at influencing biodiversity, improving building insulation and capturing microscopic pollutants, thereby improving air quality and human health. Mobilane has developed a partnership with the university after director Sean Farrell held discussions with academics from its Faculty of Sciences and was impressed by the independent rigour they would bring to the research.
Sean Farrell comments: “The problems that smartly designed and well-managed green spaces can solve are diverse, from improving respiratory health to reducing instances of domestic violence. Some research has already been done into these areas, but we are keen to work with industry and the public sector to help further clarify and quantify these benefits. “Intelligently designed green spaces have a multitude of benefits, but scrutinising them in this way will give a clearer, deeper understanding of precisely what those benefits are. This research will provide firm evidence of the wide-ranging improvements the introduction of a highquality green space into a development can bring. We have wanted to be involved in research into the credentials of well-managed green spaces for some time and when we heard of the academic work being done at Staffordshire University we were keen to find out more and get involved.” The current research being done at Staffordshire University will provide more information on how pollutants known as PM10s – particulate matter that is less than 10 microns in diameter – are absorbed by plants. The reduction of PM10 levels is a focus of policy for the Department for Transport and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Enquiry No 37

Balfour Beatty Engineering Services Gets M&E In Order At £11M Refurbishment Of Rochdale Police HQ Balfour Beatty Engineering Services (BBES) has completed a sustainable mechanical and electrical (M&E) installation as part of the £11.6 million refurbishment and remodelling of Greater Manchester Police’s Rochdale divisional headquarters – helping the project achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘very good’ and save approximately 230 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year. Working under a continued framework agreement with main contractor Mansell, a Balfour Beatty Company, and Greater Manchester Police (GMP), the redevelopment transformed the ageing 1960’s concrete building into a state-of-the-art divisional headquarters. The 18 month project included the creation of a stunning glazed atrium and new external lighting. Internal areas were fitted-out to include open plan offices, meeting rooms, kitchen and toilet facilities, as well as informal meeting areas and social spaces. The project required BBES to engineer a comprehensive M&E package that would meet both the restrictive demands of the structure whilst also ensuring service diversions – including heating, communication, drainage, alarms and security systems – would protect the integrity
of the building. It was essential that the headquarters remained operational throughout the work. In addition, the new M&E package had to play a key role in creating a low energy use building that would achieve a BREEAM ‘very good’ rating. The sustainable initiatives utilised included the introduction of high performance insulation to the building fabric, installation of solar heating panels and absence detection to lighting and ventilation systems to minimise unnecessary use and reduce energy costs. Other work included the installation of all equipment, pipework and ductwork to accommodate the new air conditioning system as well as electrical, CCTV, fire alarm and security systems. In addition, new water and waste systems were installed. With security paramount, BBES implemented a phased installation using careful planning and liaising closely with Mansell and Greater Manchester Police. With a number of spatial restrictions to overcome, BBES utilised an innovative solution for concealing power outlets for computer services. A raised access floor was unsuitable due to an unchangeable

The refurbishment, in which the delivery of M&E services played a crucial role, has not only improved facilities for staff and visitors but is also expected to reduce annual gas and electricity costs by £13,500 per annum, as well as reducing CO2 emissions by a staggering 230 tonnes. Completed in October 2012, the project was successfully handed over to Greater Manchester Police on time and has achieved the targeted BREEAM ‘very good’ rating. Following the creation of these first class working facilities, BBES has once again demonstrated its abilities to complete the most challenging M&E projects to the very highest standard. Drywood Brings Warrantied Colour To Non-Com Exterior Non-Com Exterior from Lonza Wood Protection is the leading fire retardant protection for exterior cladding and construction timbers. The proven polymer based formulation of Non-Com Exterior treatment makes it the only UK Wood Protection Association Approved leach resistant fire retardant product. This allows the Non-Com Exterior treated timber to be used externally without the need for a protective coating. However, Lonza has now introduced Drywood Woodstain, a water based, high performance and warrantied coating for exclusive use on Non-Com Exterior treated timbers, giving specifiers the option to add an easy to maintain colour finish, if preferred. Drywood Woodstain from Drywood Coatings BV has been used successfully on Non-Com Exterior treated timbers within new build projects in Holland for a number of years. Available in a range of transparent, semi-opaque and fully opaque colours, it offers architects and designers a robust and reliable coating for use with Non-Com Exterior treated timbers. Drywood Woodstain exhibits excellent adhesion to Non-Com Exterior treated timber, and importantly does not compromise its fire retardant properties. Drywood Woodstain penetrates into the wood and also builds a thin film layer on the surface, reducing dirt adhesion and allowing the timber to breathe. It weathers slowly and evenly and is easily overcoated with minimum preparation for on-going maintenance. www.lonza.com Enquiry No 41

Due to the trade-marked P.i thermal efficiency U-values are well below the required Building Regulations targets. The doors and jamb are both adjustable to enable long-term smooth operation and to adapt to different building tolerances. www.comar-alu.co.uk
Dimplex has welcomed the government’s latest Energy Bill, which sets out the UK’s plan for a low carbon economy and includes decarbonising the electricity grid. The Energy Bill aims to move the UK's energy production from a dependence on fossil fuels to a more diverse mix of energy sources, such as nuclear, wind and biomass. Stuart Mackenzie, managing director at Dimplex, says: “A decarbonised grid will clear the way for homeowners, businesses, and housebuilders to confidently make the switch to either energy efficient conventional electric heating, or renewables such as heat pumps, safe in the knowledge that appliances are future-proof and ready to plug into low carbon energy.” A switch away from fossil fuelled infrastructure will increase the UK’s security of energy supply, reduce dependence on the volatile pricing of imported gas, and will have a substantial impact on carbon emissions. The Energy Bill proposes a ‘green levy’ on fuel bills to fund the development of a low carbon infrastructure, and while this has attracted criticism, the increases are likely to be offset by savings made as a result of various energy efficiency programmes. www.dimplex.co.uk

by a Europrofile cylinder from both inside and outside. Slave leaves in sets of double doors are secured at top and bottom by centrally operated flush bolts hidden within the glass; and concealed closers in the head keep the doors tightly closed. Although the PureGlaze door can be fitted with a wide variety of handles; the most popular option is stainless steel pull handles in 650mm long – which are bolted through the glass; and cranked to allow access to the key. The new ‘PureGlaze leaf’ can be configured for both sliding and stacking, to allow larger panel sizes and wider clear openings. Planned future developments include an option for a folding PureGlaze – as well as testing to allow leafs wider than 2 metres.
The PureGlaze Door The new and improved PureGlaze door is designed around 180 degree pivot operation – allowing for a wide variety of building uses. It has been has been carefully re-detailed, so that a wider variety of locks and closers can be incorporated into the profile – allowing greater continuity across the range. The introduction of a double bottom bearing has increased the sizes possible for the PureGlaze door – with heights up to 3 metres now available. The profile is thermally broken, and with standard glass achieves average u-values of 1.6 W/m2/K. This value can be improved by integrating Heat Mirror film into the doors. Other enhancements to the PureGlaze door include an extra line of woolpile around the frame – to improve weathering performance, and a relocation of the closer to the head of the door – to reduce the size of the threshold and improve drainage. Security is solid - with a 3-point deadlock operated
The PureGlaze Window The PureGlaze window is available in either manual or electrical options, up to widths and heights of 1.5 metres. The window has no visible framing from either inside or outside, making it ideal for facades where a perfectly flush finish is desired. Overall average u-values are 1.1 W/m2/K – 1.5 W/m2/K – depending on the glass specification. The PureGlaze window is also available with Heat Mirror film integrated, for optimum thermal performance. As with the PureGlaze door, security is robust – with the manual version featuring key lockable handles which operate 2-point dead locking espagnolette bolts. The weatherproofing is excellent – as shown in our water test video. Enquiry No 52

Dallmer Renova Roof Drain - Ideal For Retrofit When re-roofing, a major problem is often the removal of existing roof drains before installing new ones and connecting them inside the building to existing drain-pipes. Dallmer’s Renova 63T Roof Drain is a product that completely overcomes this problem and therefore reduces dramatically the overall cost of roof renovation. RenovaDrain is specifically designed to push down through the existing drain and inside the existing drainpipe, creating a watertight seal via the lip-seals on the down pipe of the drain. This well conceived design is made with the precision for which the Dallmer name is respected throughout world – thousands are in use in Europe and the USA. RenovaDrain has recently been upgraded with improved, dedicated versions for use with bitumen felt – ‘DallBit’ - and TPO membranes. A version for welding to PVC remains plus the ‘standard’ version for EPDM – or any other membrane. Improvements include extended length (up to 460mm from roof level) to cater for ever thicker layers of insulation and a dome grating with a greater free area to avoid the problem of possible clogging by roof-blown rubbish. The Dallmer 84 version is smaller but just as easy to fit and is widely used where additional insulation is not being laid or remedial work with a flat grate on paved terraces. www.dallmer.com Enquiry No 55

SE Controls Solves Corridor Overheating In Multi-Storey Buildings An effective solution to overheated corridors and communal spaces in multi-storey residential buildings has been developed by SE Controls, which exploits the versatility and performance of the company’s smoke ventilation systems, allowing the controlled ventilation of hot air to maintain comfort for residents. With the increasing focus on energy efficiency, the use of centralised boilers and distributed heating are common solutions in many multi-storey buildings. While routing hot water pipe work through corridors provides a simple method of distribution to feed individual apartments, it can make the corridors uncomfortably hot. SE Controls has designed a solution which allows its smoke ventilation systems to also operate as a precisely controlled passive or mechanically assisted natural ventilation system to help maintain comfortable temperatures and energy efficiency. By using sensors to monitor the temperature on each floor, the smoke ventilation system’s control panels automatically manage the proportional opening of end of corridor vents, smoke shaft doors and roof vents, which allows the controlled venting of hot air to cool the corridors. SE Controls’ combined smoke ventilation and natural ventilation solution enables the integrity of the fire safety system to be maintained and provides an effective answer to corridor overheating. www.secontrols.com Enquiry No 56
A Biomass Solution Made For The Public Sector Public sector buildings have a commitment to cut carbon, as well as a commitment to keeping costs down and disruption to building occupants to a minimum. Helping meet the specific needs of this market, is leading biomass solutions provider, Euroheat, which has introduced a new pre-fabricated wood-fuelled heating unit - the ‘Energy Cabin’. The Energy Cabin is delivered complete with necessary boilers, pipe-work, accumulators and hopper; it simply needs to be plumbed in and wired up – ready to go in one day,. Downtime is kept to the absolute minimum. This is thanks to the quick installation and the fact that the Energy Cabin is a separate unit, self-contained outside of the main building; in some cases there is no downtime whatsoever. Due to the dramatic reduction in time spent on-site to install the biomass system, costs are reduced considerably. As Euroheat experts are responsible for the actual configuration of the wood-heating components, the Energy Cabin arrives partially commissioned and can be installed by any Euroheat approved, competent M&E operative. Equipment is housed inside a bespoke unit, not just a converted shipping container, which, once in-location is regarded as a non-permanent structure, so in most circumstances negates planning laws. Heat outputs range from 30 – 200kWs but multiple cabins can be fitted together for larger requirements. www.euroheat.co.uk Enquiry No 57

Durable Concrete Repairs Concrete is a robust and durable building material but when it is under constant threat from both the elements and contaminants in the environment, minor imperfections or even major damage can often occur with can lead to structural damage and in extreme case failure. It is imperative to establish the cause of the concrete degradation or steel reinforcement corrosion before repairs are carried out. Poor understanding of the cause of the problem can result in inappropriate repairs which will ultimately fail at significant cost. The successful repair and protection of concrete structures which have suffered deterioration, firstly require professional assessment in an appropriate condition survey. Secondly the design, execution and supervision of technically correct principles and methods for the use of products and systems must be in accordance with European Standard EN 1504 - the British Standard for ‘Products and Systems for the protection and repair of concrete structures‘. European Standard EN1504 By introducing and defining the key principles of repair and protection, EN 1504 helps owners and construction professionals to fully understand the requirements of the different stages of the repair and protection process.
It also standardises concrete repair activities and provides an improved framework for achieving successful, durable repairs, helping to ensure good quality repairs and long term protection of the building. Schematic system of approach Global manufacturer of construction materials, Sika provides all of the necessary products for the repair and protection of concrete in accordance with the Principles and Methods defined in EN 1504. unfortunately fallen into a state of decay. Premature deterioration, unexpected and uncontrolled cracking caused by corrosion of the reinforced steel and poor appearance and finish has became the order of the day so these high rise towers quickly lost their futuristic look. A good example of the renovation potential of the post war modernist tower block is just a stone’s throw from London’s Columbia Road Flower Market. Designed by renowned architect Berthold Lubetkin in 1958, George Loveless House was suffering from significant structural damage caused by chloride penetration and the subsequent corrosion of the steel reinforcement. Tower Hamlets Homes needed a proven means of repairing the damage and protecting the steel reinforcement in two twelve storey buildings. A proven long term solution Following a careful assessment of the properties, the consulting engineers specified a range of concrete repair products from Sika. With the intention of repairing and protecting, the specification included high performance mortars, corrosion management systems and sealants. The concrete repair system specified offered Tower Hamlets Homes a cost effective and reliable way to repair the damaged areas and extend the life of the building. These systems have an impressive track record which goes back more than 15 years, and conform to
the performance requirements of the more recent EN standards, demonstrating Sika’s historical commitment to providing long term technically correct construction solutions. Preventing the corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete is essential. Sika’s proven and ecomomic concrete repair system ensures that any structure will be able to stand the rigours of usage for years into the future.

Avant-Garde Mosaic For New Louvre-Lens Italian tilemaker Trend, market leader in the production of glass mosaic tiles, has completed a highly prestigious international contract for the Louvre’s new gallery annexe in the city of Lens, in the Nord-Pas de Calais region of France. It entailed one of its most distinguished artistic commissions ever, for the creation and installation of floor mosaics for the celebrated Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, regarded as an important voice in the avant-garde movement. Featuring Kusama’s trademark bright colours, bold patterns and polka dots, the floral mosaics have been laid by hand in the La Scène auditorium of the Louvre-Lens, where it will be seen and walked on by hundreds of thousands of visitors. Thanks to the company’s use of advanced digital technology for rendering the artwork into mosaics and its in-house management of the entire design and production stage. Trend was selected to reproduce Kusama’s complex floor patterns with micro mosaic tiles from its 1 x 1cm collection, even creating special fluorescent hues and colourful shades to match precisely the original artwork. Trend’s environmental sustainability credentials, with its tiles made from up to 70% recycled material and glass materials destined to last a lifetime, were also among the reasons it was entrusted with this notable project. Opened in December 2012, the Louvre-Lens is one of France’s biggest recent cultural developments, representing an investment of €150 million and occupying a total surface area of 28,000m2 on a 20 hectare reclaimed site. A series of low rise, steel-and-glass buildings with a low environmental impact, the Louvre-Lens was designed by Japanese architects SANAA in association with New York museum specialists Imrey-Culbert and French landscape artist Catherine Mosbach, following an international architecture competition. It will house a rotating collection of around 900 masterpieces from the Paris museum, comprising a succinct history of art from the 4th millennium BC to the
mid-19th century, shown in chronological sequence. At the western end of the complex, La Scène will host conferences, screenings and live shows in a 300-seat auditorium, fully integrating all of its activities into visitors’ routes through the museum. A distinctive feature of the foyer will be a spectacular 200m2 mosaic by artist and sculptor Yayoi Kusama. Trend’s main technical challenge was to bring Kusama’s sketches to life, with the exact details and psychedelic colours, and the artist even insisted that the Italian design studio created several special tile shades from scratch. Employing computer-aided design techniques, Trend then created a digital interpretation of the source design, the pixellated properties of the tiny 1 x 1 cm glass mosaic tiles enabling precise reproduction. The tesserae are traditionally fused and coloured en masse to ensure consistency of shade throughout the depth of the tile, retaining their definition and brightness over a lifetime. They are resistant to sunlight and colour fading, non-porous to water, will withstand cleaning fluids and are inherently slip resistant, qualities that make authentic glass mosaic historically valued for such works of installation art. The same quality and technical characteristics are extended to Trend’s stock range of authentic glass mosaic tiles, available in standard 1cm, 1.5cm and 2cm square formats and a series of irregular and hand-cut sizes. Selectaglaze On Display At Tate Liverpool Tate Liverpool is the home of the national collection of modern and contemporary art in the North of England. Attracting more than 12 million visitors since opening in 1988, Tate Liverpool is one of the most visited UK galleries outside London. The gallery is housed within a five storey Grade I Listed warehouse, converted by architect James Stirling, in the historic Albert Dock on the city’s World Heritage waterfront. Tate Liverpool’s commitment to sustainability has recently seen improvements to the gallery’s conferencing areas on the fourth floor and the fourth floor galleries which host special exhibitions and displays year-round. As part of their brief, Building Surveyors Drivers Jonas Deloitte needed to ensure that the gallery’s environmental conditions were optimised to protect the works of art on display. The large traditional single glazed windows overlooking the docks capture light throughout the day and so offer superb viewing conditions but also need to provide the required environmental conditions for the display of art works. To help find a solution, Drivers Jonas Deloitte consulted with the UK’s leading secondary glazing specialist, Selectaglaze and the company’s local partner, Fenestral. With a wealth of experience within Listed and historic buildings Selectaglaze and Fenestral were uniquely placed to understand the very special nature of Tate Liverpool’s requirements. Following trials the preferred solution was a pair of white powder painted hinged casements arched to follow the window line. With flush hinges, white gaskets and concealed locking the frames provide minimalist lines. Tate Liverpool requested special protection against damaging UV light, which was achieved with 6.8mm clear laminated glass together with an additional specialist UV film. Multipoint locking and high compression seals ensure tight seals and so help maintain temperature and humidity within the gallery. The hinged panels allow easy access for cleaning and maintenance. After a full assessment by Tate Liverpool staff who supervised the process, the work was undertaken outside gallery opening hours and caused no disruption to the art work on display. Enquiry No 63

JS Air Curtains Beautiful At Beaufort House
Safety Matting Protects Mosque Prayers
The aesthetic design and high quality performance of the Rund air curtain from JS Air Curtains made it the ideal choice to complement the imposing blend of traditional and contemporary architecture at Beaufort House, in the City of London. The constant use of the double door elliptical air pod made the drafty reception area cold and uncomfortable. Four, two metre high, Rund air curtains were installed vertically at either side of the doors, to heat the air in the pod and create a barrier against cold air entering the building. The air curtains at Beaufort House are economically heated with low temperature hot water but electrically heated and air only models are also available. The Rund air curtain has an extremely attractive, cylindrical design and can be fitted with many different mounting or suspension options to tie-in with an entrance’s architecture. Beaufort House selected the stainless steel option although the Rund is offered in any RAL colour.
Heronrib matting, manufactured by Plastic Extruders Ltd, is helping keep prayers safe at the Karama Mosque in Dubai. The slip resistant matting was installed over the tiled floors in the Mosque’s several ablution areas. Here the ablution, ‘Wudu’, is performed 5 times a day, the ceremony which involves washing the head, hands, face and feet before walking barefoot into the prayer areas. Not only does the matting provide protection from slipping on the tiled floor but its surface is impregnated with antibacterial and anti-fungal additives. This ensures that it is hygienic for bare feet, reducing the risk of cross-contamination, as well as being comfortable underfoot thanks to its embossed surface. The matting is manufactured from hardwearing non-porous vinyl with a two layer open grid construction and channelled underbars to help water drain away easily in all directions. This means the embossed surface remains relatively dry and highly slip resistant. www.heronrib.com

Slough Bus Station – A Dramatic Symbol Of Urban Regeneration Curtain walling from architectural aluminium system specialists, Technal, has helped to create a highly visible new gateway and transport hub for the Berkshire town of Slough. Designed by Bblur Architecture and built by McLaren Construction, Slough Bus Station is a bold new transport interchange that links the railway station and bus passengers to the town centre, replacing its infamous Brunel-designed bus station. It provides safe, enjoyable and efficient facilities and a new route into the main shopping areas, joining the north and south of the town which had long been separated by the A4 trunk road. The £7m scheme has an ambitious, sculptural design, which was the result of an architectural competition to create a building on a very restricted site that would be an important transport hub and an attention-grabbing entrance to the town centre. The result is a striking, curvaceous and futuristic metallic design featuring a series of gentle undulating roof canopies and incorporating a 140m long covered pedestrian walkway that stretches into the town. The only straight lines in the project are in the glazed façade which was created using Technal’s Géode-MX62 curtain walling. The system, which was fabricated and installed by Glassolutions Installation, spans the full height of the first floor on the north and south elevations of the accommodation building. It features a bespoke head and cill, and split mullions to interface with the aluminium cladding system that curves in two directions. Finished in dark grey, the Géode-MX62 curtain wall, which was developed to accommodate larger dimensions and maximise natural light, allowed clear spans of 6m to be created.
The Géode-MX62 system enables architects and contractors to specify even larger sizes of glass to help reduce the reliance on artificial lighting. A maximum weight of 600kg per transom can be specified compared to up to 400kg for the standard visible grid system. It is available in three mullion/transom sizes – 80mm, 140mm and 200mm for further design flexibility and will accommodate 8mm to 44mm glazing as a flat façade. Technal’s robust aluminium commercial doors were also used for the Slough scheme. The building is clad in specially-designed mill finished brushed and coated aluminium shingle tiles that form a softly textured metallic surface and change character in varying light conditions. This finish also echoes the roof tiles of the nearby listed Great Western Railway Station. The 660sqm two-storey station accommodation building provides a café, safe waiting area, retail outlet and ticket office, with an office for inspectors and canteen for bus crews located on the first floor. Behind this facility are the two ‘sinuous tails’ that form the covered walkway under which are 10 angled bus bays and associated bus stops. The bus station also has strong sustainability credentials. It has a BREEAM ‘very good’ rating, is heated and cooled using an energyefficient heat exchange system with pipes buried underground, and the cladding tiles are made from aluminium that is 97 per cent recyclable. The canopy cladding sits on layers of recycled plastic. Enquiry No 67

Affordable Energy For Edgecote House Unfortunately, the priorities of early 18th century architecture did not include a requirement for energy conservation and the present owners in this age of enlightenment were looking to reduce their carbon footprint, take advantage of the government grants and subsidies available, and reduce reliance on their oil-fired heating by using an energy efficient alternative. As a result isonergy were approached to design a system that would provide more affordable central heating and hot water, not only for Edgcote House itself but also for the five cottages in the grounds nearby. Preliminary thoughts were to use energy from the sun and stored in the ground of the huge grassed areas around the building. Solar energy stored in the ground is a very cost effective energy source, but a first site visit showed the even greater attraction of the lake fed by the River Cherwell that provides a landscape feature just 200 metres from the house. Water is an even more reliable and constant conserver of solar energy than the earth, and a system was conceived involving 2700 metres of 40mm diameter pipe laid in loops across the lake and weighted to keep it at a depth below the surface. Filled with a biodegradable antifreeze solution that absorbs the heat held in the lake water, the pipe pattern circulates the warmed liquid to shore where it passes through a manifold, from here it is transferred to the utility room of the House in a larger 90mm flow and return pipe through a 120mm conduit. It was at this stage period romance became wedded to renewable energy. Preliminary probes to establish the best position for the manifold disclosed the mouth of a forgotten secret passage, believed to link to a priest hole in Edgecote House. Investigations showed the passage to be in surprisingly good condition and able to carry the pipe up to the house, saving considerable excavation work and disturbance to the well- trimmed lawns that complement the vista over the lake. It
is here that the most modern of technology takes over to turn residual energy from the sun into heat suitable to provide spatial heat to the rooms and the energy required for hot water supply by means of heat pumps. A ground source heat pump exchanges the heat captured by the anti-freeze liquid from the water of the lake and transfers it to a refrigerant. The anti-freeze is cooled and return to the pipes in the lake to be recharged. This low temperature refrigerant passes through the heat pump where an electrical compressor compresses the refrigerant gas and raises its temperature. The energy of the high temperature refrigerant is transferred to hot water system for heating. At Edgcote House, three of the new generation of super efficient Viessmann heat pumps, each with an output of 42kW, are employed for the purpose of providing heating and hot water. The first operates to fulfil the hot water requirements of the house and the five cottages, delivering sufficient energy to supply water at a temperature at around 70 degrees Centigrade to a highly insulated 1500 litre capacity hot water tank. The other two pumps, in a master and slave configuration, provide hot water to the radiators of the central heating systems and they feed into a 1,000 litre hot water tank linked to a 1,500 litres buffer tank which promote efficiency of the system. Since the lake-sourced heat pumps work at an efficiency that delivers a heat output of well over four times the electrical energy put into the system to power the heat pumps, the first indications are for an extremely substantial saving of around 70% in fuel costs against the original oil-fired boiler. Timoleon UFCH For Historic City Church St. Andrew Undershaft, once a City of London landmark, but now completely dwarfed by the notorious ‘Gherkin’, is remarkable in several ways. Apart from the extraordinary name [the ‘Undershaft’ refers to a huge Maypole that reputedly towered over the building in the 16th Century], it is one of the very few City churches to survive both the Great Fire of 1666 and German bombing in the Second World War, only to be damaged by the IRA’s attentions in the 1990s. As a meeting place it was felt that greater comfort, in particular more effective central heating, had become essential and Forcia Ltd., a company with considerable experience in heritage projects [essential for work in this Grade I Listed building], was appointed to undertake the work. Underfloor heating was the obvious choice for the church to ensure even warmth throughout the huge 330 square metres of floor space in St. Andrew Undershaft and it was decided that use of the FoilBoard system developed and made by Timoleon Limited would make installation simple and swift and ensure that heat provision would be both reliable and effective. Timoleon’s FoilBoard heating system is designed to be laid directly on any reasonably flat surface; ideal for St. Andrew Undershaft since the composition floor was in quite fair condition. The basis for the system is panels manufactured from carbon coated expanded insulation material containing extremely effective pre-bonded soft temper aluminium heat diffusers. The panels include channels for the flexible 15mm polybutylene pipe which will circulate warm water and are held in place on the floor by conventional wooden battens. The expanded insulation material is easily cut to size where necessary and is also sufficiently flexible to accommodate minor undulations in the floor below. When the panels are laid and secured it is the simplest of operations to walk the heating pipe into place from a roll. Enquiry No 73

Wicona Curtain Walling For Glasgow Velodrome – One Of Europe’s Largest Indoor Sports Facilities The Emirates Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome have just been completed, creating a new world class sporting landmark for Scotland. Curtain walling from Wicona was specified for this fantastic venue. The complex houses two stadia – a 5,000-seat indoor arena and a 2,000seat velodrome for key 2014 events such as cycling and badminton. Between the twin halls is a connecting circulation space, the ‘hub’, which accommodates ancillary facilities and the headquarters of the national sport federation. The Wicona aluminium Wictec 50 curtain walling solution was specified by 3DReid to accommodate large unsupported spans of glass of up to 4m long. Special connections for the transoms and mullions were engineered to take the heavier loads for the spans. The system also offered slim sections and consistent profile sizes across the project. The curtain walling was faceted for the velodrome to follow the curve of this striking building and was used with curved bull nose caps to add interest to the façade by accentuating the horizontal profiles. The system spans four storeys on the hub that links the two venues, and 77m long screens of grid curtain walling were constructed to enclose the arena. Other areas of glazing include the atria roof and the level 2 entrance. www.wicona.co.uk Enquiry No 74
A Copper Wave To Defy The Elements The new RNLI Lifeboat Station at The Lizard is protected by a curved skin of Nordic Standard copper from Aurubis Architectural to withstand the aggressive coastal environment of its unique location on England’s most southerly point. The new building follows a previous design, also by PBWC Architects, in Padstow and is a direct response to the technical demands of a new RNLI ‘fast slipway’ lifeboat. It aims at maximising roof area and minimising penetrations to ensure a robust, weather-tight finish. The selection of metal roofing was a logical progression from the development of the distinctive, wave-like, curved form. The Nordic Standard copper was supplied by Aurubis Architectural, part of the world’s leading integrated copper group and largest copper recycler. The copper will continue to develop a natural green patina, taking on a blue hue in this exposed coastal location. In addition to Nordic Standard, other Aurubis Architectural surfaces include Nordic Green and Nordic Blue factory-applied patinas. Nordic Brown pre-oxidised copper gives either light or dark brown oxidisation that otherwise takes time to develop in the environment. Copper alloys include the new Nordic Bronze, Nordic Brass and the innovative Nordic Royal - an alloy with a long-lasting golden colour. www.aurubis.co.uk/architectural Enquiry No 75

Forbo Is On The Beat At Staffordshire Police HQ The recent transformation of a former vehicle servicing garage into a new multi-purpose HQ building for Staffordshire Police was a challenging refurbishment project calling for a wide range of different flooring types. Forbo Flooring Systems supplied The Design Consultancy of Staffordshire County Council with the attractive, practical and cost effective fully integrated floor scheme required Forbo’s Allura Luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) in a selection of contrasting ‘natural and earthy’ finishes and tones were used to create visual interest and to delineate walkways and seating zones in the open area, cafeteria and corridor. For offices and meeting rooms calling for softer textures and improved acoustics, Tessera Mix, Forbo’s best selling random-lay, batchless carpet tile proved the perfect textile solution with its geometric patterns and multi-layered, seamless appearance. Coral Duo, a highly effective wipe-off entrance flooring system was specified to provide maximum soil and moisture removal from the soles of shoes in the heavily trafficked entrance area. The matting retains 10% more dirt in the first few metres than any other textile entrance flooring system. On the first floor, in all general purpose areas, Surestep safety flooring was specified, not only for its enhanced slip resistance (R10 rating) but also for its low maintenance properties and durability, provided by its unique PUR Pearl™ finish. Never A Bridge Too Far For Neaco’s Aluminium Decking Neaco’s Techdek aluminium open grille system has become a popular choice for bridge applications, having been specified as decking for pedestrian or cycle ways at some of the UK’s most prestigious bridge schemes. Techdek’s T-Bar profile provides a 74 per cent contact area on the surface yet drains water efficiently and its swage-locked construction between the bars enables high structural efficiency. Those qualities - combined with a maintenance-free durability and the option of a serrated anti-slip surface for increased safety – make Techdek an ideal specification for the external conditions and high traffic demands of a bridge. Neaco’s national sales manager, Richard Richardson-Derry, comments: “Bridge developments have become a major market for our Techdek system and we are proud to have the product featured on some of the UK’s most high-profile bridge projects in recent years. In addition to its many practical qualities, Techdek provides a high architectural aesthetic that is manufactured last. Its versatile modularity can adapt to unusual angles and curvatures, allowing it to serve some of the most creative aspects seen in contemporary bridge architecture.” As well as offering bridge-friendly qualities, Techdek has many environmentally friendly attributes: the system is non-toxic, non-combustible, corrosive-free and 100 per cent recyclable with no downgrading of its properties and very little energy required for re-melting. Precision-manufactured off site and easy to assemble with no welding required, Techdek is suitable for many other applications, including staging, modesty screens, solar shading, balustrade infills, maintenance galleries and roof access walkways. BSRIA Testing For Evaloc Project EVALOC – short for Evaluating Low Carbon Communities – is a three and a half year Research Councils UK (RCUK) funded research project led the Low Carbon Building Group of the Oxford Institute for Sustainable Development at Oxford Brookes University, with the Environmental Change Institute of University of Oxford. The research team is investigating six low carbon communities in terms of the impact, effectiveness and success of their changes in energy use on energy behaviours. Clearly the EVALOC team’s efforts rely on accurate measurement and recording of the energy consumed in homes within the six communities involved and that is where BSRIA comes in. BSRIA Instrument Solutions is one of the UK’s leading companies dedicated to supplying the latest testing equipment to aid in compliance with the ever more stringent regulations in the construction industry and was delighted to co-operate in ensuring the supply of accurate data for the EVALOC project. BSRIA has supplied and installed Wi5 systems – wireless to ensure minimal inconvenience for the householders concerned - in 30 homes spread through the six communities. These will provide ongoing data on such subjects as temperature, humidity and CO2 levels and in addition BSRIA is setting up sophisticated systems to monitor low carbon technologies – photo-voltaic, air source heat pumps, solar thermal systems etc.- in use in the communities concerned. The EVALOC initiative is clearly extremely important in establishing the long-term effectiveness of low-carbon technology and its effect on the householders using it. The team’s research results, however, can only be as good as the data obtained from the low-carbon homes chosen for evaluation. Thus the reliability and accuracy of the testing equipment supplied by BSRIA Instrument Solutions is an absolutely vital part of the project. www.evaloc.org.uk Enquiry No 79
