Nothing To Be A-Frayed Of! Heckmondwike FB, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of fibre bonded carpet, has reported an increase in demand for its renowned heavy duty Supacord range for use in educational environments. The company attributes this rise to schools seeking carpet with anti-fraying properties. There are 42 shades available and the option of tile or sheet, to suit project requirements. Supacord is renowned for not ravelling or fraying, even in the most heavy-duty environments. It also provides good acoustic properties and reduced noise transmittance. Like all Heckmondwike FB’s carpet, Supacord has anti-static and anti-slip properties, it also offers low maintenance. Great thermal performance is another property attributed to Supacord, which is warm and comfortable underfoot. Schools like the fact that Supacord is available in all primary colours to match their branding or classroom themes. Supacord can also be complemented by bespoke entrance matting in Heckmondwike FB’s Diamond, with integrated logos or customised designs. www.heckmondwike-fb.co.uk

Water jetting and vacuuming technology supplied by Lanes Group has been used to help build a structure that will define high-tech the new physics building at Oxford University. The new Beecroft Building will be home to some of the world’s leading scientists doing cutting edge research. Lanes was commissioned by principal contractor Laing O’Rourke to carry out water jet cleaning of the specialist groundwater drainage system built into the concrete shell of the basement structure. The drainage system, made up of about 200 metres of 100mm-diameter pipe, feeds groundwater into a well. When the building is operational, a pump will discharge the water into the surface water drainage system. Lanes, the UK’s largest independent drainage specialist, deployed a jet vac tanker to carry out the work. Its jetting and vacuum hoses were guided to the bottom of the basement via the building’s lift shaft. Darren Lynne, Regional Manager of Lanes Group’s West London depot, said: “Even though we were lifting water a vertical distance of 60 feet, the vacuum technology on our jet vac tanker was able to cope. “ www.lanesfordrains.co.uk

Back To The Drawing Board In an ingenious adaptation, an IT training room at Birmingham University features an SWG moveable wall system from Style, that has been installed with the sole purpose of providing an occasional white board. “The room benefits from ample natural light thanks to a wall length window at the front and the University didn’t want to lose this,” explains Mike Fine, the director for Style in the midlands. “However, they did need to find space for a white board.” By installing a very simple but effective moveable wall system, Style delivered a flexible solution that can be opened and closed with ease, catering for the changing teaching requirements each day. Devoted to the teaching of postgraduate courses, the Alan Walters Building opened at Birmingham University’s Edgbaston campus in September 2016. Providing a truly exceptional experience for future generations of postgraduate business students, the £10 development includes a Harvard-style lecture theatre as well as communal areas for studying and group work. The IT room is used to teach the complexities of financial trading. “This is an unusual variation to our core business”, confirms Fine. “Normally our walls divide a room into separate areas, however on this occasion the objective was quite different.” When opened, the partitioning panels runs the full length of the windows and, being finished in a wipe- clean surface, can be used just as a traditional white board would be. To complement the modern interior design of the room, a ‘pure white’ moveable wall was deemed too stark and so a blend of two different tones of brown create a stunning effect. Only the middle section is a writable board where the lecturer can write notes, draw diagrams and communicate with the students. www.style-partitions.co.uk

Gdańsk’s New Museum Puts History At The Ground Level The recently opened Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk, the biggest historical museum in Poland, specified 4,000 m2 of Flowcrete’s Peran SL flooring to create unique finishes that were an integral part of the museum’s exhibits. The Museum of the Second World War is a modern venue that presents the history of the war as the greatest cataclysm of the 20th century with a focus on the stories of individuals, societies and nations. The museum has been developed at Władysław Bartoszewski square in Gdańsk (the city where the war broke out) at the Motława river, close to the historical city centre. The museum’s project is authored by Kwadrat architectural studio from Gdynia. The Belgian architectural firm Tempora designed the permanent exhibition. It is located 14 metres under the ground and covers around 5,000 m2, making it one of the largest historical museum exhibitions in the world. The main exhibition comprises three main narrative blocks: "The Road to War", "The Terror of War" and "The Long Shadow of War" divided into 18 thematic sections. The collection shown at the exhibition includes two and a half thousand objects and approximately 240 modern multimedia displays. Flowcrete Poland supplied the technology and materials for the floor in both the museum’s hall and exhibition rooms, which was installed by TQS Flooring. The floors were made in 12 different colours, including white, black, khaki, light and dark shades of brown and grey, with PU Matt coating. Resin flooring in natural shades of browns and greys perfectly suited the industrial, minimalist

aesthetics of the Museum of the Second World War. Using Peran SL also meant that the museum could create attractive and powerful visual effects, like in one exhibition room where posters and old newspapers were sealed into the resin floor so that the visitors could walk above them. Peran SL is an epoxy-based, 2-3 mm thick flooring system, which provides an even and smooth surface. Due to its high resistance to mechanical damage it is usually applied in industrial environments with heavy-duty wheel traffic, however its durability and appearance also makes it ideal for public venues subject to high levels of foot traffic - such as the Museum of the Second World War, which was visited by almost 2,000 people per day after it opened. The robust material offers impressive durability and resistance against not just the intensive pedestrian traffic but also heavy loads, which here included exceptionally heavy objects, such as a German Torpedo G7a weighing over 1,000 kg, which was extracted from the bottom of the Gulf of Gdańsk, and even a Sherman Firefly tank! Apart from Peran SL flooring in the hall and exhibition rooms, Flowcrete Poland also supplied 6,000 m2 of its specialist Deckshield ID car park deck coating system for the museum’s two-storey underground car park, which was installed by IMR company. Both of the flooring applicators that worked on this project are Flowcrete Poland approved contractors.

Marshalls Provide Water Management Solution For Derriford Hospital Interchange The road outside Derriford Hospital has been widened to allow buses to travel in both directions, helping to reduce congestion outside the main entrance and making bus journeys to and from the hospital quicker and more reliable. The scheme will provide better waiting areas for bus and taxi passengers and those getting dropped off or picked up by car, four additional bus stops, and widened footpaths to provide more space for waiting passengers. Developed in partnership with Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, the scheme cost just over £2 million and was part funded through the Heartof-the-South-West Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). The Derriford Hospital Interchange scheme is part of a master plan of highway improvements on and around the city’s ‘northern corridor’, connecting with the new Marjon Link Road and complementing other schemes such as the Derriford Transport Scheme, where construction is now under way. A cost effective lifetime cost was the key aspect of the project, along with a robust system which would never need to be replaced as there

is a high level of trafficking within the area; Derriford hospital is Plymouth’s 2nd busiest bus interchange, and the constant bus overrun meant a high loading drainage solution was crucial. Marshalls’ Concrete topped Drexus Pave Drain was chosen as it provides a cost-effective solution, which is robust enough to withstand frequent heavy vehicle overrun. Even with the heavy trafficking, the system will never need to be replaced keeping the lifetime costs extremely low. Through Marshalls’ concrete expertise and heritage in natural stone, the company developed Drexus Pave Drain to complement its most popular paving products. By having a coordinating top unit, the drainage can blend seamlessly with the surrounding paving, with no need to break up the overall aesthetic with a traditional grated solution, whilst also retaining an excellent inlet and loading capacity. Engineer Amey utilised Marshalls’ complimentary design service for the drainage packaging of the scheme which ensured a fast turnaround. This was important as the scheme was delayed by 3-4 months before construction works could proceed, which affected travel in the surrounding area, so speed of construction was essential. Marshalls was ultimately able to deliver a drainage solution which met all the necessary requirements outlined by the client, and which is tough enough to withstand the heavy trafficking throughout its lifetime. Investment In New Wards At County Hospital Stafford Protected By Yeoman Shield County Hospital, Stafford, have invested in 4 new wards which are to be opened throughout the year, offering more patient beds and spacious areas conducive to patient care and staff wellbeing. The first of such wards to be opened is Elderly Care, Ward 15, which now containing 28 beds with 12 single en-suite rooms, four, four bedded bays, a dedicated rehabilitation/therapy space, counselling and day room – is a great improvement on what was previously available.

Corner protection angles and protection strip were also added to ensure a comprehensive protection system was in place. All were supplied in complementing shades of Grey, dovetailing into the décor scheme, contributing to a clean and attractive appearance throughout the unit.

The ward refurbishment work, run by main contractors Kier Construction, included wall & door protection products from Yeoman Shield which were installed by their own fixing team.

The 12, bright and airy, en-suite rooms, colourfully painted, have Yeoman Shield bed head protectors installed on the walls at the head end of the patients bed. This area can be extremely vulnerable to damage caused by beds, drip stands and other medical equipment being wheeled up, too close, to the wall.

To ensure that the investment of time and money made by County Hospital in the re decoration and layout of the new ward was preserved for many years to come, Yeoman Shield Guardian Twin Handrail was fitted to the walls along the bed bay corridor.

Yeoman Shield’s stylish Guardian Bedhead protectors at 900mm long in Cream or Grey, were fitted on spacer brackets, standing slightly away from the wall to ensure full protection was given to the plaster painted wall behind.

This dual purpose product not only acts as a handrail support for those requiring it but the integrated lower protection rail provides protection against wear and tear to the walls and the upper handrail also.

Ward Manager, Julie Woodworth commented “I am extremely proud to be the first ward manager to move in the refurbished ward. The reaction from the patients and the staff has been absolutely fantastic.”

The nurses’ station area and connecting corridor walls are now thoroughly protected with Yeoman Shield 125mm protection rail on a solid timber core, affording a robust yet attractive defence against wheeled equipment, trolleys and cleaning machines.

For more information on Yeoman Shield wall & door protection products and how they can save on maintenance budgets go to www.yeomanshield.com or call 0113 279 5854.

Kemperol Cures Roof Ailments At Poole Hospital Kemper System’s Kemperol 2K-PUR solvent-free and odourless waterproofing membrane has been used to refurbish the roof of Poole Hospital’s outpatient department, ensuring that the project avoided any odours that could become a nuisance to staff and patients in the unit or the surrounding wards.

odourless throughout the installation process, required no strip out of the existing roof substrate, no hot works and no wait time between applications of resin. Explains Steve Mulcock from Hi Tec Roof Systems: “The outpatient department at Poole Hospital is based around a central courtyard and surrounded on three sides by seven storeys containing wards. It was vital, therefore, that we used a system that would minimise disruption while providing a durable solution. The cold-applied liquid system also helped to ensure we could handle the awkward shapes and details of the roof’s quadrangle layout.” Hi Tec Roof Systems cleaned and prepared the roof, applying a fungicidal wash to completely remove any contaminants before applying a Kempertec primer. The Kemperol 2K-PUR resin was then applied in a single wet-on-wet process in which the resin is first applied to the substrate; reinforcement fleece is then laid directly on to the wet resin, immediately followed by more resin on top. This ensures complete saturation of the reinforcement fleece. Once cured the resin forms a seamless, elastomeric waterproof membrane that cannot delaminate, is UV stable, and bonds directly to the substrate.

The cold-applied liquid membrane was installed by contractor, Hi Tec Roof Systems, overlaying the existing single ply membrane on the 480m2 roof. Despite regular repairs to the existing roof, the single ply membrane had failed due to a number of factors, including the loosening of mechanical fixings, damage caused by seagulls and holes in the membrane caused by cigarette butts discarded from above. The Kemperol 2K-PUR membrane was selected for the scheme to ensure minimum disruption at the hospital as it is completely GO!PUBLIC : june 2017

Finally, a non-slip maintenance walkway was created on the completed membrane using tiles fabricated from recycles tyres. Comments Richard Moremon from Poole Hospital: “The outpatient department’s location had made it especially susceptible to wear and tear and this roof refurbishment has not only delivered a much more robust surface but has also addressed some of those issues, ensuring that the new Kemperol membrane will fulfil its expected BBA service life of at least 25 years.”

Glazed Doors, The Clear Choice Summer is upon us, bringing with it increased light levels to building interiors. This natural borrowed light is invaluable, illuminating dark spaces and reducing the need for artificial light. With this in mind its worth giving closer consideration to the use of glazed interior doors that can transform both living and communal space. Vicaima doors are of course renown for innovative designs in an extensive range of finishes and performance characteristics to suit a multitude of applications. It’s little wonder then that this range is complimented by a comprehensive array of glazed options to match the needs of today’s social housing market. Of course light is just one of the many factors to consider when selecting glazed interior doors for social housing. Safety must of course be of paramount concern, whether directly from the use of safety glass or less apparent but no less important where fire doors are concerned. Vicaima is a leader in fire door technology with one of the widest ranges of FD30 and FD60 doors and doorsets (i.e. designed to resist a fire for 30 and 60 minutes respectively) in the UK. The company’s particular appeal is that it makes fire doors which are also beautifully designed. At Vicaima all fire doors are supplied factory glazed to ensure risks are removed. Glazing is a particular concern for fire doors as, unless correctly installed, it can create a weak area in the door. Historically,

6mm thick wired glass was the only option, however modern glass technology has led to the development of much more aesthetically pleasing glazed fire doors. Another important consideration in the selection of glazed doors is of course the requirements for clear visibility as stipulated under Part M of the Building regulations. Again here many Vicaima glazed door designs address this issue, providing complete mobility solutions. Selecting the right glazed door is a simple process with help and assistance from the Vicaima Interior Door selector. This handy guide, available both in print and digital format via the Vicaima website, enables quick and easy choice of door design. A wide variety of glazing models can be offered, so it’s just a matter of deciding which finish is required and then paring it with the chosen aperture pattern. Of course non-standard or bespoke designs can also be provided in many instances, so that specific design requirements can be accommodated. And in addition to flush doors and door sets, Vicaima have recently introduced a new Classic K range. This modern twist on the conventional panelled design also includes glazed options, making it ideal where traditional and contemporary styling needs to meld.

Neaco Products Featured At Gold Standard Care Home Neaco have supplied a contemporary balustrade specification for a new 60bed residential care home in Barrow. The £7m Parkview Gardens care home has replaced four older Cumbria Care homes as part of a wider modernisation programme of care for older people in the Barrow area. Cumbria County Councillor Beth Furneaux described the home as “the gold standard for dementia care and central to how we will deliver services in Barrow in the future.” Architects Alston Murphy Associates specified Neaco’s powder coated aluminium balustrade with glass infill panel. In contrast to many care homes, the building was designed to provide outdoor space on every floor, including first floor terraces featuring Neaco’s glazed balustrade installed to an extended height to provide additional safety. The terraces also include Neaco’s Techdek aluminium grille systems as terrace decking. Neaco’s Spectrum balustrade systems are available stainless steel or aluminium in a wide range of power coated finishes, including wood-effect. Start With The Needs Of Most… An architect is urging her colleagues to start with what suits most and work backwards, when it comes to accessible toilet specification. Inclusive specialist architect, blogger and mother of a child with special needs, Vaila Morrison maintains that current Building Regulations fail to address what meets the needs of everyone. A more ‘universal’ approach to a Document M-compliant wheelchair-accessible WC would enable tens of thousands more people to access a venue. She says, “Under current Building Regulations, at the very least a unisex wheelchair-accessible WC should be provided, if there are no other toilet facilities. However, Document M assumes the wheelchair-user can access the facility and transfer without help.” “In reality, thousands of people need help to transfer because of their disability and/or size; they need space for their large wheelchair and/or carer(s), and perhaps a hoist. Even I should use a hoist to transfer my daughter from her wheelchair- she’s six years old, so is now really too big for me to lift unaided. School staff or paid carers must use a hoist to lift her for Health & Safety and insurance reasons. “Similarly, thousands of people with ‘invisible’ disabilities and/or learning disabilitiues need the extra space, and a changing bench to be changed because of incontinence, or to deal with stoma. Surely it’s better to start with one facility that in principle meets the needs of most, and work back? After all, if it’s the only loo, if it’s unisex and accessible, then it should be accessible for all able and disabled people, babies, children and families alike! All it would need, would be for the regular ‘Doc M’ toilet to be enlarged enough to accommodate an adult-sized changing bench and a ceiling hoist. “Clos-o-Mat has developed a version of the concept, with campaigners. Space to Change requires only 7.5m2. Then, if you need extra capacity and have the space and budget, you can add the ‘extras’- the separate ladies, gents, baby-change and even a BS8300: 2009 standard Changing Places toilet (12m2 assisted accessible WC with height-adjustable changing bench and ceiling track hoist)!” www.clos-o-mat.com

Aberdeen Royal Infirmary Drains Get Health Boost Lanes Group has carried out a major programme of drainage surveying and cleaning as part of a £38 million refurbishment scheme at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. Drainage engineers from the Lanes Aberdeen depot worked for more than six months on the project, focused on the cleaning of drainage downpipes in the largest building on the Foresterhill Health Campus. Lanes worked with construction company NG Bailey, on behalf of main contractor Robertson Group. Surveying and cleaning the drainage system in the Pink Zone Building on the hospital campus was part of a major refurbishment scheme commissioned by NHS Grampian. Paul Kaczmarek, Senior Project Manager for NG Bailey, said: “The Lanes Group drainage team worked well with our own colleagues. Working on a live hospital site demands the highest standards, not least in health and safety, and they were very much up to the task.” A key part of the challenge was to co-ordinate the drainage cleaning and surveying work with the many other professional construction teams working on the site at the same time. www.lanesfordrains.co.uk

Interior Film From David Clouting Proves A Success In Demanding NHS Environment

The Weybourne Day Unit, part of the NHS Norfolk & Norwich University Hospitals Trust, provides a nurse-led oncology and haematology service. The inspiration for the artwork on its interior walls was the flora and fauna of the surrounding area of Weybourne. Emma Jarvis, Environmental Arts Manager, said “Our decision to use a film to cover the walls and as a base for the artwork was determined by a number of factors including; infection control, cleaning and fire safety. We selected LG Hausys Interior Film from David Clouting because it not only passed the bleach test but the quality of the white colour of the film was also significantly better than the others we tested.” www.davidclouting.co.uk

Pendock Boxes Clever On Children’s Ward Middlesex Ltd. has specified six column casings from Pendock, the British casings and enclosures specialist, for a ward in the Newham University Hospital, on behalf of main contractor VINCI Construction. The sub-contractor was looking to create a calming and minimalist environment for Rainbow Ward, which specializes in paediatric and adolescent services including oncology, surgical and medical care. Pendock’s initial involvement was to recommend and then supply six column casings of varying sizes, which the company advised should be laminated for ease of cleaning and assist with infection control. To create the two 300x400mm casings positioned against one wall of the reception area, three sided, 8mm thick profiles were specified in Super White, with the inner collars at the top and bottom of the 2700mm tall structure being finished in brushed aluminium to offer visual contrast. The full columns – of the same height but using 10 mm thick material were manufactured in an identical finish, though all are slightly different in shape; this very much being the advantage of specifying casings from Pendock, which is able to create bespoke solutions thanks to its dedicated design team. www.pendock.co.uk

Wraptite Tape Enables Premier Inn To Sleep Easy Wraptite Tape has once again delivered total peace of mind to the property owners of a brand new Premier Inn hotel in Leeds, providing a vapour permeable air barrier and maintaining the integrity of the building envelope. The new 136 bedroom, 9-storey hotel was designed by architects Cartwright Pickard, and forms part of the exciting Whitehall Riverside Scheme in the West End of Leeds city centre. Wraptite Tape was installed as a superior solution to seal the joints on the rigid insulation board behind the rainscreen cladding. Typically an aluminium coated Butyl adhesive tape would be used to seal joints, openings and penetrations. Whilst providing a seal against air leakage, these tapes may not only prevent air, but also prevent the movement of moisture vapour, leading to potential problems and damage to the boards underneath over time. The high vapour permeability characteristics of Wraptite Tape mean that crucially it allows moisture vapour to escape the structure easily, removing the need for an additional breather membrane saving time and cost. www.proctorgroup.com/air-barriers

Says Rinnai’s Chris Goggin, “Simply supplying a water heater unit (or multiple units) has become an antiquated notion that simply is not good enough. ‘System’ thinking, where we deliver to site the complete package, is what is going to give the gym chain the edge over the competition. The Rinnai system virtually guarantees endless amounts of hot water at useable temperatures, all on demand." The inaugural site was keen to have a fully reliable system with the slimmest of running costs, and, at the same time it was paramount that the showers never ran out of hot water even at the busiest of times. The Rinnai total gym solution includes water heaters, flues, scale protection, unvented cylinders, valves, prefabrication racks, advanced BMS controls – even water sampling equipment – specified, designed and delivered by Rinnai. When ErP labelling went live on 26 September 2015, Rinnai scored A-ratings on all its water heaters and achieved best in class energy and running cost figures following independent testing by a notified body. www.rinnaiuk.com

Introducing The Metropolis Grating Ductile iron gratings on surface water drainage channels don’t necessarily need to be utilitarian in appearance with geometric slots or meshes. Inspired by the patterns made by water flowing down a stream, the surface design of the Hauraton METROPOLIS grating is reminiscent of the ART NOUVEAU style and later ART DECO period. Planners and landscape architects can now choose this grating to add a touch of class to their schemes in historic and premodern townscapes or any surface drainage project where an aesthetic, more decorative look is desired. www.drainage-projects.co.uk

Hot Stuff! Combining flexible room configuration whilst maximising the feeling of space and light, Style was contracted to install two DORMA Varitrans glass moveable walls to the community training area of the newly constructed, Lymm Fire Station. Etched in a funky design, one glass wall has the appearance of a curved screen when closed, creating an airy Life Skills Centre. The other Varitrans divides an open area, that is used for large gatherings, into two separate rooms for training, presentations and meetings, Lymm Fire Station is a new, full-time fire station, significantly improving response times across Cheshire, Halton and Warrington. As well as having complete fire fighter training facilities, the station also incorporates the Cheshire Interactive Life Skills Centre known as ‘Safety Central’ – where people can be educated about the hazards they are most likely to encounter in and around their homes and communities. Working with architects, TACP of Wrexham, and main contractor ISG, Style was asked to add functional adaptability to the space, ensuring it is utilised to the maximum, at all times. DORMA Varitrans is a single glazed moveable wall with the option of either manual or fully automatic operation, and was the perfect solution for Lymm Fire Station’s requirements. “We were delighted to have been specified for this very high profile new build project,” said Andy Gibson, Style’s director for the North. “Varitrans is ideal for projects such as Lymm Fire Station as well as shop fronts, restaurants, church halls, airports, showrooms or offices, where space division is required without the need for acoustics. As the photos show, it can be fully customised with screen printing, sand etching and logo placement, and single and double pass doors can be incorporated allowing easy access when the wall is in position.” www.style-partitions.co.uk

Marmox Multiboards Pivotal To Grosvenor Place Project A high specification refurbishment and conversion project in one of the capital’s most desirable areas has seen the specialist fit out contractor making extensive use of Marmox Multiboards, chosen for their outstanding stability and ease of use as a tile backer board. Much of the work within the period property located in South-West London’s Grosvenor Place, is being carried out by a Kent based building contractor, which has employed Multiboards for a variety of challenges in both commercial and residential developments, going so far as switching specifications where inferior alternatives had been proposed by the design consultant or main contractor. In this case the 6 and 12 mm Multiboards were secured down across new and existing sub-floors to take out differences in level, prior to laying ceramic floor tiles in bathrooms, wetrooms and cloakrooms. The managing director of the company, who did not want to be named due to his blue chip clients’ desire for privacy, and himself a time served tradesman, explained: “We have used Marmox Multiboards for a number of years – especially where tiles are going to go on top, because they provide such a stable background – but they have a lot of different applications. These include in office reception areas where all of the cabling is laid between the pedestals of a raised access floor system and the architect is concerned about very heavy loads being imposed, say by pallet trucks.” “We screw the Multiboards down over the metal floor pans instead of using plywood because it doesn’t move, it doesn’t shrink and you get a perfect key for adhesive. Multiboard is a really good product and when we find something which works we stick with it.” www.marmox.co.uk

Scotscape Installs Bespoke Suspended Ceiling Planting And Living Walls For Sports Brand Asics Fitness, health and well-being are the first things that pop into your head when you think of a worldwide sports brand…… and you’d be right. That’s why Asics, using Scotscape’s integrated, intelligent plant design, are incorporating vertical and suspended planting systems into their global office and retail spaces. Scotscape are really enjoying working with the Asics team creating new ways for the inclusion of sustainable, health-giving plants into both their retail and office locations. Greening retail environments for health and well-being, as Asics have done with Scotscape at their stores in Brussels and Amsterdam, presents challenges not encountered in other interior or exterior locations. Every inch of the retail space is crucial – for product display,

ease of customer movement, signage, checkouts and changing areas, to create maximum impact and sales. When approached by Asics, Scotscape needed to meet this challenge – how to incorporate sustainable plant content to improve the retail environment, whilst not dominating valuable floor or wall space? Scotscape’s solution came in the form of suspended planting over the shop floor. The team designed a bespoke stainless steel, semihydroponic planter system complete with automated irrigation, which elegantly floats above the retail space and is filled with abundant planting, thus creating a green, living canopy. The ethos of health, well-being and science which is central to a sports brand makes this a perfect solution!

Why Hydrogen Rich Water In Your Home? Over the last few hundred years, hydrogen gas has demonstrated a therapeutic effect on over 150 human diseases, as well as enhanced health and wellbeing. As revolutionary as this may be, what exactly is hydrogen? Furthermore, why should hydrogen be included in your water? The people of Japan have been bathing in Hydrogen Rich water for centuries, their natural hot springs, known as Onsens, are sought after for their salubrious and invigorating effects. It is well documented that dissolved Hydrogen gas is what gives the waters of Nordenau, Germany and Tlacote, Mexico, their medicinal prowess. 1978 marks the earliest record of hydrogens’ medicinal properties, where cases of inflammation were successfully treated. The topic did not gain true popularity among scientists until 2007, when an article on the benefits of hydrogen was published in the prestigious journal of Nature Medicine. Hydrogen is colourless, odorless, tasteless and nonmetallic. It is the lightest and simplest element in our known universe, expressed as the symbol ‘H’.

It is comprised of just a single electron and proton. Under regular conditions it exists primarily as molecular hydrogen (H2 gas). In this form, hydrogen has been shown to exert an extensive range of therapeutic effects. When H2 gas is present in water it is referred to as Hydrogen-enriched water and is simply conventional water (H2O) that contains dissolved hydrogen gas (H2). For example, there are carbonated soft drinks such as sodas and sparkling waters that contain dissolved carbon dioxide gas (CO2). In contrast water that contains dissolved hydrogen gas, is the best bet for a longer, healthier life. Footnote: * Aquatiere does not recommend those types of beverages for improving health. Hydrogen is the smallest molecule in the universe; this minuscule proportion allows for a smooth diffusion into the sub-cellular compartments of the mitochondria and other locations in the human body.

Looking For A Whitewashed Floor? Bona White is a new wood floor primer designed to produce an on-trend bleached look when used in conjunction with a Bona polyurethane lacquer. The intensity of ‘whiteness’ is dependent on how many coats are applied. This client wanted a whitewashed look to their original Victorian floor boards to tie in with the soft greys of the kitchen. This was achieved by the application of two coats of Bona White under two coats of Bona Traffic HD lacquer. The works were part of a complete renovation of a Victorian town house in Bath and were carried out by Bona Certified Contractor, TWF Bath Ltd, who specialise in the restoration and fitting of traditional wood floors. Before treatment, the TWF team filled large gaps using reclaimed pine wedges and then sanded the floor to 100 grit abrasives. Smaller gaps were filled using Bona Mix & Fill, which is mixed with sanding dust from the floor to ensure the filled areas blend in with the rest of the surface. The floor was then sanded using 120 grit abrasives before the application of the first coat of Bona White. The floor was then abraded using a Bona Scrad Pad to remove any grain raising from the surface before the application of the second coat.

To produce a highly durable, easy to maintain finish, two coats of Bona Traffic HD lacquer were applied. Traffic HD is Bona’s toughest lacquer. The very low VOC content and low odour mean there is no need for homeowners to vacate their property while the works are being carried out and there is no lingering smell. Its fast cure time means the floor can be in full use just 12 hours after treatment – making it an ideal choice for commercial floors too where there is little available downtime for renovation. TWF’s clients chose the Matt version of Traffic HD for their kitchen floor. Silkmatt and Extramatt sheens are also available. As a Bona Certified Contractor, TWF Bath is part of Bona’s network of highly trained wood floor specialists - independent wood floor companies who have received extra in-depth training in the use of Bona’s wood floor finishing products.

While much maintenance work around school and college campuses has to be scheduled for the long summer holidays, the pressure this puts on the re-roofing works means some operations have to carry on during term time, as long as noise and disruption are kept to an absolute minimum. As a result, instead of scabbling smooth the old covering of asphalt and chippings on the Bishops Stortford buildings, RT Roofing proposed to simply sweep away any loose material and then begin the over-roofing with a layer of 6mm thick Magply, bonded down in hot bitumen. This then offered a sound flat surface on which to install a Langley built-up felt system. The owner of RT Roofing Services, Richard Tebbutt commented: “We wanted to avoid the noise and dust of scabbling the existing asphalt surface and chippings, so instead the team just brushed off the loose material and thoroughly prepped the surface before bonding the Magply sheets down in hot bitumen. Because Magply is noncombustible, any excess bitumen can simply be burned off before the vapour barrier is installed.” www.magply.co.uk

Omnie Renewable Heating Selected For Church Hall Following years of fundraising and planning consultation, the congregation members of a Church near Plymouth in Devon are witnessing the construction of a stylish new hall, complete with a TorFloor underfloor heating system linked to an advanced eco-friendly heat pump, supplied by Exeter based Omnie. The project to build the oak-framed meeting and function hall alongside the stone and slate All Saints Church in Sparkwell is being led by the locally based design practice of Le Page Architects, with AD William Building Contractors carrying out the main construction work. Rod Smith Plumbing & Heating, meanwhile, is the specialist sub-contractor undertaking the installation of a LWD70A/ SX Air Source Heat Pump as well as the high efficiency TorFloor pipe and carrier panels. These are being laid within a 'sports floor' buildup, which features oak boards fixed down over 45 mm square timber battens and height adjustable Junkers New Era cradles. Celotex PIR boards provide a layer of insulation beneath the TorFloor system, ensuring the maximum amount of heat rises to create an even temperature profile throughout the occupied space. Le Page Architects Director and project leader, Simon Crosbie, commented: “We have used Omnie before on a couple of projects because the company offers a great system with very good technical back up. In the case of the All Saints Church Hall project in Plymouth it just made economic and design sense to utilize the TorFloor in combination with one of Omnie’s air source heat pumps. The green oak frame by Carpenter Oak has been up for four or five months and the underfloor heating is being installed now by Rod Smith, who we have also worked with before and things are getting on well.” Specifying the award winning TorFloor underfloor heating system instead of conventional radiators can not only offer greater efficiency in terms of heat delivery, reducing energy bills by as much as 30%, but also improves the SAP rating required for Building Regulation compliance. TorFloor panels are suitable for use in all suspended and batten floor installations with the 22 mm thick, pre-routed flooring grade particleboard being fixed down across the timber supports in the same way as standard flooring. The unique pattern is profiled to accept the 12 mm Omnie pipe that is then connected back to the utility or plant room, normally via one or more of the manufacturer’s custom made manifolds. For the Plymouth project there is a 12-port manifold distributing low temperature water from the Omnie LWD70 heat pump. Impressively, an output of just 7kW will be enough to create a warm environment in the worst of the winter weather, still offering high COP figures and low running costs. The new All Saints Church Hall is expected to be used for wedding parties and social functions, as well as for committee meetings and by other groups, all of whom can be assured of a warm and comfortable environment for their activities.

New Dehumidifier Range From Condair Condair, the world’s leading humidification specialist, is expanding its product portfolio with a range of advanced commercial and industrial dehumidifiers. The new Condair dehumidifier range comprehensively covers both desiccant and condensing technologies with extensive standard capacities from 0.5kg/h to 182kg/h (@20°C/60%RH). Custom units are also available, which are capable of providing even greater dehumidification or operating under specific or extreme environmental conditions required by an application. Condair desiccant dehumidifiers use a silica-coated sorption rotor to absorb moisture from the air. This type of technology is ideal for low temperature conditions or applications that require very dry air, below 50%RH. The dehumidifier’s sorption rotor is regenerated with a heated airflow and the wet, hot air is vented externally. As standard, electrical heat exchangers are used for this regeneration process but gas-fired, steam or hot-water heat exchangers can also be used, either alongside the electrical heater or instead of it, to reduce energy and operating costs. www.condair.co.uk.

Mr Slim R32 Models Bring Advanced Benefits At The Same Price Mitsubishi Electric has launched a new range of air conditioning units utilising the new refrigerant R32 which will be available at the same price as the equivalent R410A units. The R32 Mr Slim Power Inverter split type models are the second product range in the company’s UK line-up to utilise R32 refrigerant – which has a low global warming potential (GWP). “We have kept the price exactly the same as our current R410A Mr Slim Power Inverter line up as we see this eliminating a big hurdle in the adoption of this new refrigerant, which is an important change to help combat global warming,” explains Carl Dickinson on behalf of the company. “Anyone planning on using, designing or installing air conditioning in the coming years will now need to take into account the GWP of the system to meet the requirements of the F-Gas Regulations,” adds Dickinson. In March 2014, the European Parliament passed the 2014 EU F-Gas Regulation legislation with the key objective of reducing F-Gas emissions by 79% between 2015 and 2030. The overall intention is to cut the availability of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) with a high GWP. The F-Gas Regulations will have a major impact on the air conditioning sector and any option for the next generation of refrigerant gas must be able to meet the demands of this stringent legislation in reducing the environmental impact of HFCs. R32 has a GWP of 675 compared to R410A refrigerant which has a GWP of 2,088 and Dickinson sees this as an important reason why the market is expected to move quickly to the new refrigerant: “Not only will this help businesses demonstrate what they are doing to help the environment, the use of R32 also allows the Mr Slim units to offer increased efficiency compared to equivalent R410A models.” Mitsubishi Electric is first to the UK market with such an expansive line-up and the new R32 Mr Slim Power Inverter models have been built specifically for the new refrigerant. The range includes ten outdoor units offering single-phase and 3-phase options, with a capacity range from 3.5 to 14kW. 25 individual indoor units are also available as ceiling cassettes, ceiling concealed ducted, wall-mounted and ceiling suspended models. www.timeforr32.co.uk/pr4

Jack Aluminium And IDF Help Fred Perry’s HQ To Achieve Industrial Look The industrial look of the partitions in Fred Perry’s new head office in London has been created by IDF Aluminium, in a clever application of Jack Aluminium’s JD47 Shopfront system. The new premises in Clerkenwell occupy three renovated 19th century warehouses. Inside, Fred Perry has brought together offices, showrooms and exhibition space as the brand’s flagship location. The design uses exposed brickwork and beams to reflect the building’s industrial history. The internal office partitions were specified to the same brief. “The architect had created a timeless look in line with the building’s branding and the internal office partitioning is styled on a classic steel glazing design,” says Will Woods of IDF Aluminium. “Aluminium was the preferred material for this project because it is lighter, more cost-effective and can be fabricated on faster lead times than steel. “We have a great working relationship with Jack Aluminium and we’ve used the JD47 Shopfront system like this before, so we knew that it would be perfect for this project. It is very fabricator friendly and Jack’s service is great. “We’ve been able to create something with the classic look of steel but which makes the most out of aluminium’s benefits.” www.jackaluminium.co.uk

Saint-Gobain Building Glass Celebrates Royal Opening Of Oastler Building Saint-Gobain Building Glass looked on proudly as a £27.5m university building it helped to design and create was opened by the University of Huddersfield to provide a new home for its Law School and the School of Music, Humanities and Media. The prestigious Oastler Building was officially opened by The Duke of York on Monday 24 April at a VIP ceremony that celebrated the success of apprentices and trainees, via numerous sub-contractors and manufacturers, that were involved in the project. Occupying a prominent site on the Shorehead side of the campus, the six-storey building is BREEAM Outstanding rated thanks to the use of SGG COOL-LITE SKN 165 II collar control glass in its curved frontage and a 3.5m cantilever. This dramatic design feature helps to self-shade the building’s glass façade to reduce solar gain and energy costs for cooling. During the project, Saint-Gobain Building Glass worked closely with commercial sealed unit manufacturer Dual Seal Glass to ensure the correct technical glazing specification was provided and ensure that project deadlines and demands were met on time and in full with an excellent quality finished product. Adrian Adams, facades market manager at Saint-Gobain Building Glass, commented: “The team at Saint-Gobain Building Glass is proud to have been part of a project that was made possible by the involvement of many fantastic local businesses. It has been incredibly inspiring to see this project take shape and we look forward to seeing it become an established part of the Huddersfield skyline.” The new building is a tribute to Richard Oastler, the 19th century reformer who campaigned to curb child labour and improve conditions for all workers in the new factories of the Industrial Revolution. www.saint-gobain-glass.com

An Integrated Approach To Motorway Design From Brett

Bespoke Lumen Rooflights Help Transform Traditional London Apartment Into A Luxurious Modernist Home

A combination of specialist kerbs and a roadbase of cementbound granular material (CBGM) has provided the Channel Tunnel approach from Junction 11a of the M20 with an effective pavement construction and a safe carriageway thanks to the integration of engineering and products from the Brett Group. Brett Aggregates was initially approached to provide a CBGM roadbase for the carriageway and a foundation for Brett Landscaping’s Trief containment kerbs, running adjacent to the roadbase. Trief kerbs were an obvious choice as the go-to solution for this situation as they provided a safe boundary to the carriageway but with the additional ability to contain and redirect any stray vehicles. Brett provided a solution with a refined roadbase design, allowing the roadbase’s width to be extended beneath the Trief. Through a clever approach, this allowed a safer, faster, simpler construction method to be employed, saving cost throughout, whilst achieving the performance demands of the carriageway and the Tried kerb foundation.

Lumen Rooflights has supplied five stunning bespoke rooflights for an exciting conversion in South West London. The existing low budget rooflights, which sat proud of the roof plane, drew the eye unnecessarily to the unsightly mansard roof. The lack of coherence within the flat due to the multiplicity of the rooflights and their scale provided an under lit and confused hierarchy to the rooms. By reducing the number of rooflights and using a cleaner design with minimal frames set within the plane of the slate roof the client, Zachary Pulman Design Studio, was able to both reduce their visual impact externally while dramatically improving the order and special quality within the flat. Zach Pulman commissioned five stunning bespoke rooflights from Lumen, who were able to adapt their product to a design which met his exacting requirements. www.lumenrooflight.com

Archaus Receives A Facelift From Remmers The exterior of this iconic building was suffering with high levels of damage, including salt ingress and excessive cracking to the render and brickwork. Salt Inhibitor was used as a ‘masonry salt blocker’ and applied to the exposed brickwork. Large areas of the render were repaired with Restoration Render and the deep section repairs were completed with Remmers Betofix R2. OS Concre Fill and Impregnation Primer were also applied prior to the application of the final protective coating system. Remmers Elastoflex system with reinforcement was applied throughout, giving a high degree of finish to the exterior of this 1930’s landmark building. www.remmers.co.uk

Yeoman Rainguard Rainwater Systems Chosen By Persimmon Homes For Luxury Renovation

Nestled in the foothills of the South Pennines near Rochdale, Lancashire, is the restoration and conversion, by Persimmon Homes, of the old Birch Hill Hospital into stunning apartments and town houses. The use of the beautiful historic building has certainly changed starting out originally as a workhouse then run as an NHS hospital for many years. The dilapidated hospital, imposing clock tower, chapel and rectory required sympathetic restoration techniques to maintain and restore the buildings grand architecture and design. Yeoman Rainguard’s XL Aluminium rainwater systems, with traditional style, textured finish and colour, were chosen to mirror the grandeur and luxury of the renovation scheme. The exterior of what was the main hospital and clock tower, now exclusive and desirable apartments, was enhanced visually and practically by the installation of Yeoman Rainguard XL Aluminium gutters and downpipes. Finished in RAL7012 Basalt Grey, 150 x 100mm MOG XL Aluminium gutters were fitted with the addition of 100mm dia. downpipes. A bespoke GRP fascia detail, skilfully manufactured by Yeoman Rainguard at their facilities in Leeds, sits stylishly below the gutters. The Chapel has been tastefully remodelled into 2 semi-detached properties and now sports XL Aluminium 125x 100mm MOG gutters and 100mm dia. downpipes. Finished again in Grey the rainwater system dovetails perfectly with the overall exterior design. www.rainguard.co.uk

Read All About It The use of a Trend BEMS has cut energy bills by more than £100,000 within two years at the London headquarters of the Financial Times (FT). As part of an ongoing drive to improve performance, reduce CO2 emissions and cut energy costs, the company wanted to ensure that all building services were functioning as efficiently as possible. The first place to start was the BEMS - and Chartwell Energy Solutions, part of the Chartwell Group, was called in to offer its advice. Andy Horrigan, the company’s Energy Manager, comments, ‘In 2013 we were tracking the emergence of a new platform called Demand Logic – a plug-and-play system that collects data directly from a facility’s BEMS. Within a week, it could offer a complete snapshot of how the building services were operating.’ The device is plugged into the Trend BEMS control panel, which collects data and broadcasts it to the cloud and software in the form of a web-based interface, which collates that data into a central, secure location. ‘This allows us to pinpoint exactly where the issues are,’ says Andy Horrigan. ‘At the FT building, we could piece together a picture within a week, built from 25,000 data points throughout the network. Once we had a clear snapshot of what was actually happening, we could then start asking questions based on our engineering expertise and work out whether issues were centred on software or hardware.’ After analysing the data captured, Trend provided the Chartwell Energy Solutions team with specialist training and tools to deal with the older parts of the system. This was particularly cost effective, as instead of replacing parts, the existing system could be tweaked to yield the best results. Two years later, energy use has been cut by around 2,290kWh/day average, translating to a total saving in energy of more than £100,000 within the first two years. www.trendcontrols.com

Blockley Brick Manufacturer Uses Marmox Boards To Speed Production Cycle One of the country’s oldest established brickworks has updated its production facilities saving not only time and money but significant amounts of energy – thanks to the use of Marmox Multiboards for the refurbishment of its drying chambers. Ten separate drying kilns have now been upgraded at Northcot Brick’s premises in Blockley, Gloucestershire, with two different thicknesses of the high performance, moisture resisting insulation boards having been employed to infill their walls and roofs. Northcot’s Maintenance Manager, Tim Nicklin, sought an alternative to the use of metal panels with a rock mineral wool core for the chambers’ roofs and walls as they typically lasted little more than a year. While Marmox Multiboards are typically utilised in building work as a floating floor beneath tiles and other finishes or as the lining to shower rooms and other wet environments, Northcot identified their rugged long life potential as potentially offering a solution to its persistent problems. Tim Nicklin explained: “The drying chambers are some 2.7 metres tall to the roof and vary in width up to 6.5 metres depending on the design, but had all caused us something of a maintenance headache. Our works manager discovered the Marmox Multiboards on line and the switch to their use has allowed us to operate the driers in a more controlled environment.” Marmox Multiboards are manufactured from extruded polystyrene or XPS and offer a range of positive physical characteristics in addition to being fully waterproof. Multiboards are proving to offer a greatly extended working life compared to the old rock mineral wool based panels and are making it far easier to control humidity levels during the drying process and to maintain the required temperature. The overall temperature has been reduced by five degrees to 750 C and the total drying period by a whole day while they can be switched off at weekends without affecting the cycle, leading to an overall 25% reduction in energy costs. www.marmox.co.uk

Omnie MVHR Systems Specified For Suffolk Eco-Homes Following the example of the German PassivHaus standard and Canadian Super-E systems, the consultants designing a development of highly energy efficient homes in Suffolk have opted to incorporate Omnie mechanical heat recovery ventilation systems as well as the manufacturer’s well proven TorFloor underfloor heating to help maintain optimum indoor conditions. The three dwellings currently being built by Mainline Properties at Cedar’s Close in Thurston, near Bury St. Edmunds, feature a host of sustainable technologies together with achieving excellent airtightness and insulation standards. However, while such measures will ensure the homes can offer low energy bills, the occupants could also face the twin risks of overheating in summer and condensation problems from the moisture generated by cooking, washing or simply breathing. The architects acting on behalf of Mainline Properties have therefore drawn on the expertise of Exeter based Omnie as the suppliers of whole-house heating and ventilation solutions, able to ensure a comfortable indoor living environment is created all year round. As a result the trio of three-storey, four bedroom eco-houses are being fitted with the MVHR units by local plumbing and heating specialist, All Aspects Plumbing, with the duct pipes being rapidly routed through the buildings’ metal web floor joists. In operation, the warm moist air extracted from the kitchen and other wet rooms will pass through each unit’s high efficiency heat exchanger to temper the incoming fresh air. Alternatively, during warm weather, the system can simply supply cooling ventilation to the living spaces and bedrooms. Mainline Properties has plans in the pipeline to construct a further half dozen high specification properties on the site in Thurston, with Omnie’s heating and ventilation solutions now in pole position to feature again. www.omnie.co.uk

Council Planners Opt For Flip Lid Power Units To Power Their Market Days In Stamford Pop Up Power Supplies® supplied their range of Flip Lid Power Units to the town of Stamford, Lincolnshire, to provide a safe, secure and discreet outdoor power supply for market stalls. An important consideration for Council Planners for Stamford was that they required a stable, effective power source for outdoor stalls on market days which then could be lowered back into the ground to preserve the beauty and integrity of the historic town. Pop Up Power Supplies® were contacted, and recommended their range of In-Ground Power Units. Manufactured in high-grade mild steel, and hot dip galvanised to BS EN:ISO1461, these outdoor power units were perfect for the market days at Stamford. Prior to these units, outdoor stalls were embroiled in unsightly trailing cables that were a hazard to not just the workers but the general public as well, not to mention the risk of electrocution too. The new Flip Lid Units can power the outdoor stalls safely as the lids are closed and locked down, preventing any public access. Another benefit of the Flip Lid Power Units provided by Pop Up Power Supplies® is the fact they have such a limited impact on the surroundings. The covers of the power units are recessed so they can accommodate various paving and other surface material infill. They are also tested unfilled to FACTA Class B loadings. The Council Planners were pleased with the performance of the In-Ground Units, as not only did they benefit from a safe source of outdoor electricity for the local market stalls, but also there was minimal impact on the integrity and beauty of the local area. www.popuppower.co.uk GO!PUBLIC : June 2017

SI-Modular: Sustainable Building System With Timber I-Beams Architect Hans-Ludwig Stell from Münster, Germany, has developed a sophisticated modular system for one and two-storey house construction. This quick, easy, and self-explanatory timber construction, SI-Modular, is based on Metsä Wood´s I-beam Finnjoist®. The SI-Modular system enables the houses to be constructed from timber completely without screws, by simply using interlocking connections in the installation. The construction of timber I-beams is similar to that of steel I-profiles: the OSB web in the middle separates the top and bottom flanges that run parallel to each other. The latter are made of high-strength Kerto-S, in a single piece and can bear enormous pressure and tensile loads permanently. The Finnjoist® timber I-beam is a very versatile building product that fulfilled all the required characteristics for this house type. The SI-Modular system is based on a fixed grid. The distances are exactly one metre. Five bays, i.e. five metres, form the maximum width - the length may be any amount on the grid. Due to the high load capacity, Metsä Wood I-beams are used for the walls, floors and roof. The I-beams are fixed to the horizontal rails which are anchored to the floor plate. When erecting the walls, the transversely running beams are visible. The beams and rails, as well as the connections and reinforcements are made of loadbearing and bracing Kerto-Q or the dimensionally stable Kerto-S. The individual timber components are connected using precisely interlocking connections. www.metsawood.com/global/news-media/references/Pages/SI-modular-wood-construction-system.aspx

Abet Shelters The Rescuers Abet Laminati’s MEG exterior grade laminate has been used to clad the exterior of the new offices and crew rooms of the RNLI Station in Brighton Marina. Designed and supplied by Aliva UK, MEG 414 was chosen to match the ceramic facades of the surrounding buildings and was face fixed with colour coded rivets. The cladding envelopes the Station, keeping staff and crew warm and dry in the harshest of weathers. This scheme is a perfect example of high performance MEG in action where the need for incredibly high performance and durability is married up with low life-cycle costs and aesthetic design. Carrying a BBA Agrément Certificate, MEG is a self-supporting high pressure laminate (HPL) for cladding the exterior of buildings, balconies and other applications. It features high resistance to temperature, climate shock, weathering, UV light and impact. Furthermore, its chemical resistant nature and closed structure do not allow paint in spray cans, various inks, emulsion paints, lipstick or pastel paints to penetrate into the decorative layer negating the need for any antigraffiti treatment and making the surface easy to clean. The range is available in over 91 colours in a mix of traditional plain colours, wood finishes, simulated concrete colours and metal. MEG is also able to incorporate Abet’s digital printing technology. This means that almost any design, photograph or pattern can be reproduced in stunning detail to give architects and designers unparalleled freedom to create unusual and dramatic building facades. www.uk.abetlaminati.com
