Top Marks For Cladding Specialists Meeting the broad building needs of schools is a challenge. Whether it’s a new build or retrofit project, versatile, quality products are key to fulfilling the client’s requirements explains John Mayes, managing director of cladding specialist Eurobrick. Bringing building projects to completion within schedule and on budget can be a real trial for head teachers and local authorities. The shortage of places for pupils means that schools need to provide additional accommodation quickly. And they need building products that are robust and low maintenance. Eurobrick brick slip cladding has been available in the UK for nearly twenty five years. Brick cladding is a wellestablished and growing sector as its numerous benefits are widely recognised. We were the first company to introduce an insulated brick cladding system to Europe in 1991, and since then have become a leading supplier to the commercial, house building and public sector markets. We’ve seen huge expansion in education projects in recent years, particularly with X-Clad, our tried and tested external wall insulation cladding system. It has third party product certification from the British Board of Agrément (BBA). The system comprises an insulated backer panel with a horizontal rib profile that ensures brick courses are correctly aligned. The panel is mechanically fixed to the substrate of the building and the brick slips are glued between the horizontal ribs. The installation is then

completed using pointing mortar, which is piped into the joints before being struck to achieve a finish indistinguishable from traditional brickwork. The green credentials of X-Clad are well established. It is a highly versatile cladding system with up to 100mm of insulation available. The insulation foam is closed cell extruded polystyrene, which offers a better weather and waterproof finish than other insulation solutions. The polystyrene used in Eurobrick’s backer panels has a certified BRE Green Guide Rating of A. In addition to being a low maintenance cladding system that will still look as good in 20 or 30 years as it does now, X-Clad offers the added benefit of a long-term reduction in energy bills. In domestic applications, heating bills have been shown to fall by as much as 30 per cent. Insulated cladding systems are ideal for retrofit projects. One such project that Eurobrick was involved with between 2007 and 2009 was Arun Vale Infant School in West Sussex. The school wanted to extensively refurbish its 1970s Hauser-style buildings, replacing the original exterior panels that had deteriorated over time. The brief stated that the school needed a durable, low maintenance cladding, with an installation that would cause minimal disruption. Keen for the all works to be completed in the summer holidays, Arun Vale decided to use our X-Clad system. The first phase of this was 60 square metres. Our slimmest backer panel of 17mm was

fixed to the plywood substrate and faced with brick slips in London Multi Buff to create a warm finish that complemented the existing buildings. It was then finished with a sandstone colour mortar for the pointing. The school and education authority were both so pleased with the results that X-Clad was also used in the second phase of the refurbishment, bringing the total installation area to 165 square metres. This particular project even drew the attention of another neighbouring school in Barnham who have used the system in their building works too. Cladding also works effectively in new-build projects. The Martin High School, in Anstey, Leicestershire, recently completed the second phase of an extensive expansion programme using X-Clad. Additional facilities were built to accommodate a large increase in the number of pupils, brought about when the school changed from a middle school to a comprehensive. The works were carried out in two stages between 2013 and 2014, in order to accommodate the scale of the works needed. The new two-storey buildings used the X-Clad system, finished with both brick and cedar cladding to create a distinctive, modern look. By utilising fast track building methods, Martin High School’s work was completed within the required time scales. The benefits of X-Clad will be long lasting; it is extremely low maintenance, with a life span of at least 25 years. In addition to Arun Vale, Hannah

More School in Bristol is another excellent example of how modern cladding can be combined with older, existing buildings. This Victorian built school needed to expand and part of its growth plans included a new kitchen. We supplied 130 square metres of the X-Clad system for a brand new modular extension to the existing building. It was important to ensure that the colours and finishes were in keeping with the older parts of the school and to create a distinctive look a mix of brick bonds were used. We have worked with schools for nearly 25 years, and have seen the number of projects increase annually. Our systems are robust enough to also be installed off-site, minimising disruption, and offering a fast-track solution to meet the varying needs of different schools. Enquiry No 2

How Off-Site Construction Can Help Address Place Planning Issues In Schools In this article, Kevin Jones, Business Development Director at the Portakabin Group, looks at the latest advances in off-site construction, and how the approach is helping schools and local authorities overcome place planning issues.

The Latest Advancements in Off-site Construction With the latest technological advances and new innovations in off-site construction, there is no compromise on design, performance, or appearance:

Demographic changes caused by an increase in the birth rate and in immigration levels have led to a serious shortfall in school places across the UK. Construction cost, speed of delivery to meet the demand for additional school places, potential interruptions to teaching, and getting the right design to stand the test of time and promote the highest standards of education, are all key considerations.

The solution? Off-site construction is successfully challenging site-based building methods through innovation, and the value it can add to the procurement process for education providers has been proven. Completion times can be halved, which will result in earlier occupation for the school – a key advantage when there is so much pressure on school places. Construction work is also safer, quieter and less disruptive – with a direct and positive impact on teaching. With good design, highly efficient processes, and a robust and technically-advanced building system, off-site construction is providing inspirational and stimulating learning environments, for permanent use and with complete long-term flexibility. Flexibility for Change Schools have to adapt over time, and so do their facilities. The space in all new buildings should be designed to allow for different uses, to meet changing requirements, and the needs of the local community out-of-hours. Modular buildings can be easily expanded, vertically or horizontally, without the need for decanting, and installation can be timed to take place during school holidays. Nonload bearing partitions and clear unrestricted internal spans of up to 12m facilitate space planning and the ability to meet a school’s changing needs.

With literally thousands of configurations and permutations, some steel-framed modular building systems offer absolutely no compromise on design, aesthetics or layout and are sufficiently flexible to meet almost any building footprint or site requirement. Columns are no longer visible either internally or externally. There is an even wider choice of cladding, glazing or roofing options to create landmark school buildings or to complement existing facilities. New wall and floor constructions offer further improved acoustic and insulation performance. Module sizes, configurations and layouts can be designed to meet individual project requirements, with larger modules providing greater cost efficiency, fewer vehicle movements to site, less cranage and fewer construction joints.

How to Expand an Already Highly Constrained School Site Modular buildings can be sited in completely enclosed courtyards, on raised platforms, and on the roofs of existing buildings. This means that areas of a school site can now be expanded or developed which may not have access to the plant, materials and equipment required for site-based building methods. This is a key benefit for schools where space for expansion is severely restricted and yet the demand for places continues to rise. Traditionally-constructed buildings can also be extended using an off-site approach, vertically or horizontally, giving schools even more flexibility to expand capacity requirements and optimise efficiency in the use of space. Disruption to teaching can be a major concern during construction projects. However, by using an off-site solution, the manufacture and assembly of the building structure and envelope, and a high proportion of the fitting out are carried out off site, significantly reducing

disruption. Construction work can be carried out without the need for decanting and the cranage operations can be timed for weekends or holidays, keeping any disturbance to an absolute minimum. Meeting the Urgent Demand for Places Using Modular Construction The Portakabin Group has recently delivered the curriculum wings for a new secondary school in Cambridgeshire using a Yorkon off-site building solution. The building was required to provide teaching accommodation for 750 pupils aged 11 to 16, to help meet the growing demand for secondary school places in the county following an increase in housing locally and rising birth rates in the area that are significantly higher than national trends. The Portakabin Group was awarded the contract by Kier Construction to provide three two-storey teaching wings for the new school. The 7,000sqm scheme for Cambridgeshire County Council was the first new secondary school to be constructed in the county for 30 years. Further Improving the Efficiency of School Construction The project embraced modern methods of construction, and the use of a Yorkon offsite solution for the curriculum wings reduced the number of steel-framed modules by half to only 60. These were craned into position in just two weeks. This approach was more sustainable because it reduced the number of vehicle movements and work on site, and there are fewer internal columns to facilitate space planning and any future reconfiguration required to meet changing local needs. Each module was delivered to site with a high performance concrete floor already in place, further reducing work on site, improving quality and acoustics, and providing a robust finish for a demanding secondary school environment. Commenting on the project, Sean Sumner, Deputy Head at Cambourne Village College said, “The children and staff absolutely love their new school and you would never know the teaching wings were built in a factory. The feel is very solid and robust and we particularly like the amount of space and light, the wide corridors and the size of the classrooms.”

“Building work in schools can cause huge disruption to teaching and there is the safety aspect to consider – with off-site construction you can minimise the impact of those issues. If we need to expand the school in the coming years, we would definitely consider an off-site solution again, which would give us the opportunity to increase capacity very quickly and easily.” The school campus features a central mall with three teaching wings radiating from it and a series of sheltered courtyards to encourage outdoor learning. The ends of the curriculum blocks each have full height stair towers and a balcony at first floor level creating an additional outside space. Circulation areas which open on to the central core with no divisions between zones to allow passive surveillance to reduce bullying and anti-social behaviour. The building has been clad in a combination of timber, dark brickwork and render to create a strong identity for the new school and to reflect the surrounding landscape. Render was used for the teaching areas, interspersed with panels of timber cladding. Cambourne Village College successfully demonstrates how off-site construction can help meet the urgent demand for school places and how it can be used to create a landmark education facility and an inspiring environment for teaching and learning. Yeoman Shield returned to Sutton Academy, a busy school in St Helens, Merseyside, to install a further phase of wall protection. Works had been carried out previously by Yeoman Shield over a year ago which proved to be so successful in protecting corridor walls that they were awarded further work. Alternative Provision Academy Adopts Coxdome Enlightenment One of the first Alternative Provision Academies to be opened anywhere in the country, set up to offer youngsters with a variety of issues fresh education opportunities not available to them through mainstream schools, has undertaken substantial refurbishment work featuring the installation of rooflights and barrel vaults from Jet Cox. The project at the Links AP Academy in St Albans, Hertfordshire, which was successfully completed earlier this year by York based T.A. Roofing, involved the removal of leaking and thermally inefficient existing glass rooflights from toilet blocks: replacing them with triple skin polycarbonate units from the Coxdome Trade Range. Several of these rooflights featured either trickle ventilation or Vent Axia extract ventilation units. Then teaching and circulation areas to the school benefitted from the installation of triple skin Jet Cox Barrel Vaults up to 10 metres in length; admitting ample natural daylight to encourage a feeling of well-being as well as cutting down on electricity usage. In total there were seven Barrel Vaults installed, all 860 mm wide. The first of these was 6565 mm long, while there were four at 8210 mm long, with the final pair reaching 9850 mm in length. The 23 Trade Range Rooflights, meanwhile, included 15 which were 700 mm square, with a further eight measuring 700 x 1500 mm. The Jet Cox Barrel Vault, from their recently expanded bespoke range, is a self-supporting structure, which can span up to seven metres and is custom made using polyester powder coated, aluminium components, while the glazing options range from four-wall, multiwall polycarbonate to quadruple skin solid polycarbonate. They are supplied as a kit of parts for ready assembly on site, while the relatively low loads imposed ensure existing roof structures do not require strengthening. Coxdome further offers a choice of upstands or kerbs manufactured in impact resistant U-PVC to simplify installation for roofers and general builders; while they also contribute to improved thermal performance. Retrofit Roof Garden Wins RIBA Awards The Graduate Centre at Wadham College has been recognised for architectural excellence at the 2014 RIBA awards, picking up a regional award for the south and a special award for building conservation. The student facility, designed by Lee/Fitzgerald Architects, underwent major renovation to keep it in line with Wadham’s existing architecture and to replace its failing terrace roof. Bauder’s roof system played an important part in the building’s new design through the creation of a roof garden that reduces its carbon footprint and the use of tapered insulation for improved drainage falls. The project brief was to not only repair the failing roof but to transform its windswept passageway into an aesthetically pleasing recreational space. Given these requirements, Bauder’s Hot Melt Structural Waterproofing with Intensive Green Roof Landscaping was a natural choice. This BBA certified waterproofing system provides a monolithic, fully bonded membrane that is robust and self-healing to minor punctures. The accompanying garden landscaping allows for a bespoke design with complete choice over planting and the layout scheme. Bauder’s approved contractor overlaid the existing deck with 400m² of the hot melt system before installing the soft landscaping components. The lightwell perimeter was waterproofed using Bauder’s premium bituminous system and concrete paving slabs were installed for walkways. This Grade II listed building is an exceptional example of how modern architecture and roof landscaping can revive a site of great historical significance. Enquiry No 8

Balfour Beatty Commences £25 Million Contact At Seven Hertfordshire Schools Balfour Beatty has started work to build or upgrade seven schools in Hertfordshire as part of a series of contracts worth £25 million for Hertfordshire County Council. These projects follow the completion of six other schools in the county and include the new build of two further Community Free Schools, Jupiter Drive in Hemel Hempstead and Ascot Road School in Watford: the extensions of High Beeches Primary School in Harpenden, Orchard Primary School in Watford; Yorke Mead Primary School in Croxley Green and St Giles Primary and Infants Schools in Stevenage. Balfour Beatty will draw on its significant experience in building schools to ensure minimal disruption to pupils and teachers, in part through the provision of temporary car parks and playgrounds. Sustainable features such as passive natural ventilation and air-tight facades will help to lower energy use in the new buildings. Tim Sutlieff, Balfour Beatty’s Local Education Partnership Director, said: “We have extensive experience in delivering education facilities, having worked with Hertfordshire County Council to deliver a wide and diverse range of school

projects in recent years. Our collaborative approach to working with Hertfordshire Children Services and schools has been absolutely key to our success and we look forward to delivering these new schools on time and to budget, whilst meeting the needs of the school.” Balfour Beatty has a long relationship with Hertfordshire County Council schools having delivered £23.7 million of schools during 2013, including Barnwell and Greenside (£5.1 million), Martins Wood (£4.7 million), Parkside Community Primary School (£2.6 million), Shepherd Primary school (£2.6 million), Samuel Ryder (£5.8 million) and St. Anthony's (£2.9 million). Balfour Beatty has worked with Hertfordshire Council since 2010, when the company constructed two schools under the Building Schools for the Future programme. Stannah Lifts Duo Moves People And Goods In New Yorkshire Schools A Stannah Midilift SL vertical platform lift and a Trolleylift 300kg service lift are delivering essential movement of people and goods in Dixons Music Primary and Dixons Trinity Academy, two mainstream free schools in Bradford, Yorkshire. The wheelchair platform lift brings equality of movement over 3 floors to mobility compromised individuals, including wheelchair users, in Dixons Music Primary; and a trolley lift carries food trolleys over 2 floors between the kitchen and refectory in the neighbouring Dixons Trinity Academy. Complementing stair access to three floors of educational facilities, the vertical platform lift operates at a speed of .080m/s over a distance of 4944mm. It is manually operated via simple push-button controls, has a roomy platform of 1100mm x 1400mm that assists free movement; and an intercom for safety and communication at all times. The disabled lift also has panoramic fully glazed doors that complement the school’s modern, airy aesthetic. The backlit ceiling incorporates an energy efficient timer which switches off the lighting when the lift is not in use. The service lift has through-car capability and operates at a speed of 0.17m/s over a distance of 1350mm. The lift is fully automatic with call and send panels at each landing entrance and finished in tough, grey baked enamel. Alternate hinged doors ensure easy entrance and exit of the roll-cages on both floors, whilst a concertina shutter leaf gate ensures goods stay secure in transit. The lift was supplied in a self-supporting structure for ease of installation in a well measuring 1320mmD x 1320mmW.

Aquair Water To Air Space Heater Units Bring School's Heating System Into The Modern Era Six Johnson & Starley Aquair S-20 Water to Air Heat Interface Units (HIUs) have been installed at the Edinburgh Dome, an unusual Grade 2 listed sports hall at Malvern St. James Girls’ School. They have replaced the original warm air heating system that was installed some 36 years ago by Peter Lucas of The Modern Heating Company. The original installation consisted of six warm air heaters located in two plant rooms. As the heaters became beyond economical repair, they fell out of use in turn, and in 2013 Heating Maintenance Services Ltd., run by Paul Lucas, the son of Peter, were asked to recommend a solution. “I’ve worked with Johnson & Starley for many years and knew the Aquairs would be an ideal solution,” says Paul. “As the original warm air ducting was already in place, the replacement Aquair S-20’s HIUs could be fitted with minimal modification re-using this.” Aquair water to air heat exchange units are available with heat output of 10, 16 or 20kW at a hot water on temperature of 80 degrees C. For energy efficient operation and accurate delivery of heat, a modulating control is incorporated. They also feature a standard air cleaner that helps to keep the air free from particulates. With the Aquairs installed the Dome is much warmer, and heating bills will be reduced as the Aquairs are up to 25% more energy efficient than the old heating system. They are used in banks of three, with one boiler running each bank. This splits the load so that each Aquair operates at the same temperature as the one next to it and delivers the same amount of heat. In this way, one Aquair does not work harder than another and the heating load is shared equally. The Edinburgh Dome is surrounded by a moat with only stepping stones across it to reach the plant rooms. The removal and replacement of the old system took approximately just three weeks and some new base plates were made by a local company. Easy Fit Drinking Fountains From Franke Sissons Franke Sissons, also known as Franke Washroom Systems, has launched a new range of drinking fountains for schools, colleges and commercial premises. Made in high grade stainless steel, the fountains have an attractive round shape and are easy to install, thanks to a clever wall bracket fixing system, making them the ideal solution for replacement or new fit. There are two water-filtered models in the range. The basic wall hung design has a bubbler and slides on to wall brackets. The next model up has the added benefit of a bottle filler. Both have a chlorine water filter that is easy to change via an access panel which also provides protection against vandalism. City Of Liverpool Library Opens Up With Reynaers Architectural Systems Reynaers curtain walling and architectural aluminium systems played a significant role in the recent £50 million PFI restoration and redevelopment of the historic Liverpool Central Library. The complex task of remodelling the Grade II listed library as well as retaining its historic façade was carried out by Shepherd Construction as part of the Inspire Partnership, a joint venture with International Public Partnerships, which also included architects Austin-Smith:Lord and Cofely Facilities Management services.

As well as its listing the building is in a UNESCO World Heritage location so the scheme utilised advanced methods and materials in the restoration of important historic features while adding bold new additions, and working with high levels of consideration for the neighbours, workforce and the environment. Demolition of the 1950’s sections of the library made way for the stunning new five storey facility housing the reading and information floors, cafe, meeting rooms, atrium and roof terrace. It also includes a state-of-the-art, purpose-built, climate controlled repository that houses Liverpool Record Office where some of the city’s

Markwik 21 – Intelligent Infection Control Over the last 2 years there has been increased focus on the potential infection dangers associated with water supply and hospital fittings. In particular there has been heightened awareness of the presence of pseudomonas aeruginosa that has been found on taps – Which is further “exacerbated by devices fitted to the tap outlet such as flow straighteners” (HTM04-01 addendum); and there has been concerns over the danger of legionella bacteria coming from “the in coming water supply” where “there is a failure of the recommended control measures (e.g. maintenance of temperatures”)

More recently we have introduced a number of new features that address the latest concerns. To meet the danger of bacteria build up around the tap spout we have removed the flow straightener altogether and developed an anti microbial copper lined spout (BioGuard) that has a smooth interior that avoids biofilm build up and gives less opportunity for bacteria to colonise.

Climate Change, Hospitals And Patient Well-Being Dr. Chris Iddon of SE Controls - Comments on hospital overheating from The Climate Change Commission report The recently reported issue of climate change causing overheating in hospitals with an associated increase in related deaths, not only highlights the risk to patient health from high temperatures and inadequate ventilation, but also questions current thinking on building design. According to findings from forthcoming research by Cambridge University, headed by Professor Alan Short, around 90% of UK hospital wards are of a design type that makes them susceptible to overheating. Extracts from the report released by the Climate Change Commission, led by Lord Krebs, indicate that building design and construction are key contributory factors to the overheating and patient health issue. In addition, the Commission has already suggested that the retro-fitting of air-conditioning plant would be uneconomic, so the immediate focus is centred on cost effective and energy efficient measures of addressing the problem, such as natural ventilation. While hospital overheating can be readily managed with natural ventilation solutions, the additional benefits, particularly in hospital wards, is that it can also reduce the build up of pathogens, viruses and associated infections by encouraging air movement and ‘flushing’ stale air from the building. Independent research undertaken by Dr. Cath Noakes of Leeds University shows that when windows are closed to reduce heat losses and energy costs, there is an increased risk of infection due to a four-fold increase in airborne pathogens. Although air quality in critical health and clinical areas of hospitals needs to be of the highest standard, these principles, in many instances, have been compromised in other parts of hospital design. In pre-operation, recovery and general wards, the opportunity for ventilation is often limited to a 100mm wide strip of open window - a limit governed by essential risk directives to protect patients from harm and provide a safe environment.

However, simple modifications could readily be implemented to the ventilation solution, such as high-level vents or window opening, which would to not only maintain patient safety, but also provide adequate ventilation to manage temperatures and improve indoor air quality. When the lack of cooling is linked to other building design issues, such as south facing glazing, low ceilings, thin walls and the cumulative heat build up from multi-storey structures, there will be and inevitable impact on hospital temperatures Temperature data research and analysis that I have undertaken with Professor Kevin Lomas, as part of the wider Cambridge University team lead by Professor Short, reveals that in numerous hospital wards across the UK there are number of key factors influencing overheating risk. The work has not only highlighted the resilience of traditional, heavyweight ‘Nightingale wards’ to overheating, but also indicated that solar gain is the key cause of internal temperature increase. Alongside improved ventilation and increased air movement through carefully planned vents to maintain patient safety, the introduction of measures to limit heat gain, such as the deployment of external shading devices will help reduce overheating risk. Hospital overheating is a very real issue and this report highlights that most are not only incapable of dealing with any predicted gradual increase in temperatures that may result from climate change, but are also likely to be susceptible to heatwaves. The links between building design practice and how regulations will need to evolve to manage overheating and assist infection control are likely to be a key outcomes from the research, which will impact all aspects of architecture and construction. While some retro-fitted solutions can provide effective answers to overheating, the time to review building design standards, specifications and regulations, particularly for future hospital construction projects, is probably already here. Resin Bound And Resin Bonded Surfacing In A Healthcare Setting Over 1000m2 of RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing was laid to the main A&E roadway entrance and turning circle at Basildon Hospital. They have a low particle emission and have achieved the Clean Room Classification ISO Class 4 for MediCare Plus and ISO Class 5 for MediCare Standard. Portakabin Donates Recycled Timber For Giant Community Artwork To Welcome The Tour De France To York Portakabin, the UK’s leading modular building manufacturer, has donated over 250sqm of recycled timber panels for an ambitious community arts project to welcome the 2014 Tour de France to the city of York.

“As well as contributing to the painting, a number of Portakabin employees also volunteered as marshals for the race. We are proud to have played a part in welcoming the Tour de France to York.”

The ‘Road Through York’ montage is based on an original piece of artwork by local artist, Karen Winship, and features some of the city’s most famous landmarks. The painting spans 320sqm and was made from timber panels which were sized and supplied by Portakabin. Local residents from the ages of two to 90 were then invited to help create the giant piece of land art which was put on display in front of the spectator stands when hundreds of riders set off for the York stage of the world’s most famous cycle race.

In the last year, Portakabin has received a number of national and regional awards and accolades in recognition of its commitment to sustainability and community initiatives, including a Gold Award in the Business in the Community Environment Index, a Zero Waste Platinum Award, and York’s Think Green Business of the Year. Portakabin has the resources to deliver both bespoke projects and standardised accommodation solutions to organisations in the public and private sectors, in the most challenging timescales, on almost any site, with less disruption, and less impact on the environment.

Biomass: Creating Comfort And Cost Savings! Rising fuel costs and the appeal of a government green scheme has sparked the owners of a 16th century coaching inn to overhaul their heating and hot water system, replacing it with a wood chip boiler supplied by natural energy company, Euroheat. Glan yr Afon Inn, located in Holywell, Flintshire, North Wales, has undergone considerable extension over the last two years and now provides 14 luxury bedrooms – all benefitting from wood heating in the form of an HDG Compact 80kW wood chip boiler, which is saving some 35 tonnes in CO2 when compared to oil! Installation firm, Menai Heating, partnered Euroheat in the project. Lee Maher, owner, explained: “The project brief involved working with some elements of the existing structure and updating the building’s radiators. There is a specially designed plant room, which houses the boiler and pellet storage tank, but also doubles as a laundry room, enabling the washing to be hung out and dried overnight further saving on running costs of expensive tumble driers and unnecessary electricity usage. “The system will use approximately 28 tonnes of wood chip to generate around 130,000kWh, with the owners expecting around £9,000 per annum from the installation under the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive.”

Panasonic’s New Pump Down System Detects Refrigerant Leaks Early Panasonic has developed an innovative solution to detect refrigerant leaks in VRF systems, offering complete assurance and protection for end users, building occupants and the environment. Panasonic’s innovative Pump Down System is ideal for hotels, offices and public buildings where safety for occupants and the building owners is of utmost importance. The system monitors refrigerant leakage continually and provides a warning before refrigerant leaks, preventing major refrigerant loss and potential damage the system’s efficiency. As well as ensuring safe and reliable operation, Panasonic’s Pump Down System contributes to a building qualifying for additional BREEAM points and achieves compliance with the current EN378 2008 standard, covering applications where refrigeration concentration levels exceed practical safety limits of 0,44 kg/m³. “Government regulations surrounding refrigerant gas are, quite rightly, incredibly demanding and is a key reason why reliable leak detection systems are required,” explains Marc Diaz, UK Country Manager of Panasonic Heating and Cooling. “However, with refrigerant prices continuing to increase, cost implications of a leak can be extremely high. The system can be connected in two ways, either with a leak sensor or an innovative algorithm. Connecting the system with a leak detector ensures the system is suitable for installation in small rooms. Thanks to Panasonic ECOi exclusive software, sensors communicate with the Pump Down System directly through its P-Link connection, eliminating the need for additional and potentially costly communication networks. It is a very cost effective solution and quite straight forward to install. The leak detector is connected through PAW-EXCT connector directly to the indoor unit and the pump down system is directly connected to the main outdoor unit. The system will activate when a leak is detected in the monitored rooms and any leaked refrigerant will be collected immediately within the outdoor units, or in an optional receiver tank for bigger systems. Panasonic has developed an innovative new algorithm to determine refrigerant leakage, enabling the system to be connected without sensors. It is able to detect leakage of R410A based on three conditions: high pressure, low pressure and discharge temperature. Access to the garden is provided by a set of minimally framed SkyFrame doors, which glide open across the fixed glass. The doors meet at the corner of the enclosure, and open without any supporting post – allowing an unbroken view, and a seamless transition from inside to out. The bottom framing of the doors is concealed below the finished floor, and above the doors is a set of vertical glazed panels - back painted to hide the top of the doors. This allows for an elegant, completely glazed appearance – and gives the structure a feeling of lightness. Anglian Architectural Wins Sustainability Award For Work On One Of Three High Profile Construction Projects Glass and glazing experts, Anglian Architectural, has cause to celebrate work recently carried out on three innovative and high profile construction projects in the East of England and in Central London. They are the first winners of the ‘Sustainability’ Category in the inaugural SCHUCO Excellence Awards for Design and Innovation for their work at Ash Court, Girton College, Cambridge; have installed a window in the belly of the Crouching Man sculpture by Angel of the North designer Sir Antony Gormley at an exclusive Mayfair hotel and have carried out a £1million complete envelope project at the newly opened Centrum building at Norwich Research Park. Cambridge University’s Girton College Ash Court extension achieved BREEAM Excellent and is one of the most energy efficient student housing buildings in the UK. It features a brick-clad, three-storey wing providing 50 en-suite study bedrooms at the Grade II* listed building where Anglian Architectural installed a super-insulated envelope with triple-glazing and powder-coated Schuco AWS 90.SI aluminium window profiles. These were combined with bespoke louvres, brise soleils and cills, again supplied by Anglian Architectural. As well as winning the ‘Sustainability’ Category Award, the project was also commended in the SCHUCO Excellence Awards ‘Education’ category. The SCHUCO Excellence Awards were launched to celebrate and recognise the collaboration between architects and specialist contractors in buildings utilising Schuco systems and showcase projects that demonstrate creativity, innovation and collaboration within the built environment. They are judged by a high profile panel from leading architectural publisher, RIBA JOURNAL and the country’s top architectural practices. Additionally, the building has also won a RIBA East Sustainability Award, a RIBA East Regional Award and the Green Apple Environment Award, which is an annual competition that recognises, rewards and promotes environmental best practice around the world. The sculptor who designed the famous Angel of the North, Sir Antony Gormley, has recently unveiled a striking statue of a Crouching Man on the façade of the new Beaumont Hotel in

London’s Mayfair. Within the body of the crouching man is an exclusive £2,500 a night suite where Anglian Architectural installed the single automated window, which can be seen in the belly of the statue. They also provided a £400,000 package comprising curtain wall façade plus steel and aluminium windows and an art deco canopy at the hotel. BUILDING IN FLOOD-RISK AREAS With summer officially here, it would be easy to forget the destruction and devastation caused by flooding earlier in the year as a result of changing weather patterns. We should remind ourselves of what climate change can lead to, and the necessity for the Government to create a new long term planning policy, and for architects and house builders to adopt new building standards and design strategies in flood-risk areas.

There is a need to improve our knowledge of climate change, understand the effects of flooding and manage the consequences, which means evaluating methods of design and construction. For example in existing properties there are a series of measures in place, such as door guards, which can improve the resilience of houses to flooding. New housing developments in flood prone areas should always be designed for flood resilience. In the 2007 guide “Improving the Flood Performance of New Buildings: Flood Resilient Construction” published by the Department of Communities and Local Government, resilience is defined as sustainable measures that can be incorporated into the building fabric to reduce the impact of floodwater to the property. One such measure would be to use an anti-flood air brick cover. The self sealing cover which can only be used with clay air bricks, is made from aluminium and incorporates a closed cell EPDM foam. Simple to install, once flood waters subside, the cover can be easily removed. Without the protection of an air brick cover, air bricks can allow over 5000 litres of water per hour to enter a property. In this perspective the construction material, along with other factors, acquires a primary role in contrasting flooding effects. Laboratory tests (CIRIA 2006) and experiential evidence (CIRIA 2007) demonstrated that clay bricks offer a high performance in terms of resilience (the best among the different construction materials considered). They were highly rated for water penetration, drying ability and retention of pre-flooded dimensions and structural integrity. The Brick Development Association upholds a very clear message that: even after a long period of being submerged, clay bricks do not show any damage. In fact clay bricks have the capability to regain their original moisture condition, form and appearance. Brickwork bridges offer a clear example of the ability of clay bricks to resist water. There are around 100,000 highway carrying bridges in the United Kingdom and about forty percent of these are brick or stone masonry arch bridges. Most of these masonry arches were built in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries during the construction of the canals and railways. Arch bridges are exposed structures and so many of the potential durability concerns are due to the effects of water, either rain water, flood water, ground water or water from burst pipes within the structure. Damage to the brickwork may occur due to cycles of freezing and thawing but this does not concern flooding. Moreover bricks with improved and more consistent properties are now available than when most existing arch bridges were built. In the case of buildings, it is important to protect the brickwork from water as far as possible but as an external cladding material, clay bricks offer good resistance and resilience in flood risk areas, reducing the amount of time until a building can be re-occupied. www.brick.org.uk N.B. All bricks are undamaged by water however, class B engineering brick laid with M12 1:1/4: 3 is particularly resistant to a transition of water, seepage does happen but it’s very slow. Class A engineering bricks are also available and are more resistant. Most water transition takes place in mortar so using a stiffer mortar with a stronger brick can be very beneficial. To make the mortar more water resistant, this should be heavily worked, to seal the joints and compress the mortar, this gives a harder, more water resistant finish.

High Capacity Drainage For New Gateshead Riverside Bus Depot The new £8.5m Gateshead Riverside Bus Depot at Dunston is the centre piece of the Go Ahead Group’s two-year £30m investment in Go North East bus network. Located on a brown field site formerly occupied by the Dunston power station, the new facility covers 5.75 hectares. The 326m² (3,500ft²) Gateshead Riverside Bus Depot building is a servicing and fuelling centre used by over 160 Go North East buses, 24 hours per day and seven days per week. 145 buses can be washed and re-fuelled on site overnight. Located off Mandela Way on the South bank of the River Tyne, the new depot building is surrounded by a concreted parking area for buses and staff cars, so effective surface water drainage was a major consideration for designers Portland Consulting Engineers Limited to ensure efficient all-weather operation. Hauraton supplied 800 metres of their RECYFIX® HICAP® 300, high capacity drainage channels. They were installed in seven runs by ground worker Joyce Drainage Limited, to remove surface water so allowing the Depot to remain open even under severe storm conditions. The large capacity of the HICAP® runs meant a drain area of up to 10,000m² was achieved with just one gully outlet. The RECYFIX® HICAP® 300 channel runs installed at the Depot accept a water volume of 137,120 litres. The scheme greatly reduced excavation costs and the length of underground pipe-work required. Each one metre channel unit weighed only 23.4kg, so they were easily manipulated into their final position on site. Factory fitted with 14mm slotted ductile iron inlets, the channels comply with a loading Class of F900 so can easily take the weight of a double-decker bus. Importantly, once installed the complete system is highly resilient to the twisting forces imposed by bus wheels. Faith In Brett’s Bus Boarding Kassel Kerb Continues For Progressive Brighton & Hove City Council Major public transport improvements, designed to span the entire length of Lewes Road in Brighton, have served to underline the confidence of Brighton and Hove City Council in the quality of Brett Landscaping’s market leading Kassel bus boarding kerb. The Brett solution has been installed as part of an ongoing programme now in its 15th year, which has improved road infrastructure in the city to support progressive efforts to make public transport efficient and accessible for all. The Lewes Road project, at 3.6 miles, represents the council’s biggest single installation of Kassel and will service this vital route along Brighton’s academic corridor. The combination of low-floor buses and Kassel kerbs improves access for those with mobility needs. Accordingly, working in partnership with the bus operators, the city has more than doubled the number of bus passengers since 1993 and is sustaining a 4-5% growth in users every year. “The Kassel kerbs from Brett Landscaping play an integral part in that, because, put simply, the materials meet the needs of buses and their passengers,” explains Richard Johnson, Public Transport Officer at Brighton and Hove City Council. “Installed correctly, the use of these kerbs reduces the extent of cage markings - the yellow road marks which indicate where a bus should stop – and enables drivers to gauge the perfect stopping location to successfully and safely drop and collect passengers, without ‘swinging in’. The significant length of the 3.6 mile road has called for improvements to be made at 12 different pairs of bus stops. The route is very wellused, as it serves residential areas as well as Brighton’s academic corridor – the city’s two main Universities and sports stadium. Buses run along the road 24 hours-a-day, and as the route is so busy, the council has chosen to employ a European design of ‘floating bus stop’ throughout, which is believed to a first for the UK. Interest from other parties has already been expressed in the new bus stop designs, which use Kassel to create the stop from the road inward, with a cycle lane behind. This gives an appearance of the bus stop as a ‘floating island’ within the road, and is said to improve both passenger safety and travel efficiency. For the 850m² roof area, Radmat Approved Contractor Premier Roofing Systems Limited installed the Esha-Universal membrane over both metal and concrete decking along with an EshaBase vapour control layer and EshaTherm thermal insulation. The mid-level roof incorporates Esha Universal with a 250m² MedO Extensive Sedum green roof which the top level seminar room looks out over. Filon GRP Over-Roofing Gives Council Depot A New Lease Of Life In a project recently commissioned by South Ribble Borough Council Filon’s lightweight GRP over-roofing system was used to refurbish their Moss Side depot in Leyland, Lancashire. The existing asbestos cement roof had started to fail, allowing water ingress into some areas of the building. A survey confirmed that the 2,000m2 roof was in very poor condition and also revealed that the supporting structure wasn’t strong enough to support the steel profiled roof that had originally been considered by the client. Having had prior experience of Filon’s over-roofing system, the selected roofing contractor recognised that this was the ideal solution for the project. Howe Green Has Historic Restoration Covered At Manchester Cathedral Howe Green’s heavy-duty 7500 Series stainless steel access covers have been installed at Manchester Cathedral as part of extensive reordering works commissioned by the Dean and Chapter of Manchester Cathedral. Architecturally, Manchester Cathedral is modern by Cathedral standards and was built up around the mediaeval Collegiate Church by the Victorians. In the late early and mid 19th Century, the original ledger stones were replaced with concrete and a network of copper pipe acting as an early form of in-floor heating. Heating the Cathedral from the floor was essentially the same method used over 150 years later but with only 60% of the heating pipe work working in recent years, a little intervention of the earthly kind was needed to make the facilities fit for the 21st century. Specialist architects Lloyd Evans Prichard planned and implemented the project, overseeing a painstaking excavation process, the removal of the old antiquated heating system and subsequent installation of a new network of mechanical and electrical chambers across the entire body of the main Cathedral building, including its Nave, aisles and chapels. As a leading developer and manufacturer of floor, ceiling and wall access solutions, Howe Green’s access covers were chosen to provide reliable yet virtually invisible access to these chambers, for best aesthetics and to ensure easy maintenance going forward. Over 70 of their 7500 Series stainless steel access covers were made, each to a bespoke size and specification to fit precisely with new Burlington Stone slabs being installed. Several multipart covers were needed too, the largest at 1747 x 853mm mirroring the dimension of Victorian voids underneath the stone floor. Multiple frame and cover sections ensured the frame weights met HSE manual handling requirements.

On a more unusual note, Howe Green also designed a special cover grating to allow air supply to the blower working the bellows of the Cathedral’s remarkable organ; famously damaged in a series of bombing raids during the war but repaired, maintained and used to this day. All the stainless steel access panels supplied were designed to withstand heavy foot traffic, without any detriment to strength or quality. Fitted quickly and unobtrusively into all types of hard floor finishes, the installation of the floor access panels allowed work on site to flow smoothly with the covers sitting 100% flush with the floor with no risk of slips or trips. But in such a historic and prestigious building, the decision to use Howe Green access covers was not just about practicality; it was also essential that the access panels blended in seamlessly with the floor to achieve the required aesthetic. “We were delighted to have been involved with this project,” said Richard Centa, Howe Green’s Sales and Marketing Director. “ The appearance of a completely continuous floor was achieved, despite the huge network of mechanical and electrical chambers underneath it. Gloucester Opens Its Gateway To Mapei’s Eco Products At Britain’s Greenest Services A Mapei decorative floor system has been installed at Gloucester Services – a new environmentally-friendly service station on the edge of the Cotswolds. Located on the M5 Northbound, between junctions 11a and 12, ‘Britain’s greenest motorway services’ was delivered by AFL Architects. The main building is constructed from local stone and timber, and features an arched grass-covered roof set to receive BREEAM excellent rating. Three individual Mapei products were specified, alongside porcelain tiles and vinyl sheeting, throughout a 1,236m2 area. All floor works were carried out by Polished Concrete Designs for main contractor, Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd. Gloucester Services, which opened in May, is a £40-million joint project between a local charity and Westmorland Limited. The charity, Gloucestershire Gateway Trust, will generate income from the service station, to support nearby target communities and charity partners in Gloucester and Stonehouse. The site includes extensive landscaping, along with electrical vehicle charging stations, a wildflower seeded roof and capacity to switch to bio-fuel pumps. A farm-shop will also feature at the site, stocked with local produce, in place of fast food outlets. Within the main building, a screed incorporating Mapei’s fast drying hydraulic binder, Topcem was laid over insulation and underfloor heating. Walthamstow Blues A 13-storey hotel next to Walthamstow Central Station, London, has been completed, clad with Nordic Blue Living copper from Aurubis Architectural alongside black brickwork. Located on a prominent town centre site, the 107-bedroom hotel forms a key part of a mixed-use scheme that will also provide new homes, retail space and a landscaped public realm. Designed by Rolfe-Judd Architects, the hotel tower is conceived as a series of vertical articulated masses, differentiated by facades clad either in black brick or Nordic Blue Living 1 copper. Nordic Blue is a factory-applied patina developed with properties and colours based on the same brochantite mineralogy found in natural patinas all over the world. In marine climates, the natural copper patina contains some copper chloride giving it more of a blue colour and this is emulated with Nordic Blue using 100 % brochantite. Another range, Nordic Green, is produced with a hint of iron sulphate yellow, replicating the natural green. With both ranges, the process can be accurately controlled so that, as well as the solid blue or green patina colours, other intensities of patina flecks can be created revealing some of the dark oxidised background material, as with the Nordic Blue Living 1 here. The material is easily bent and formed, and there are no limitations on the length of pre-patinated copper sheet or strip because whole coils are treated on the production line, not just limited size sheets. This enabled the vertical long-strip cladding, as used at Walthamstow broken up by horizontal bands at floor levels. Other Aurubis Architectural copper surfaces include Nordic Standard ‘mill finish’, as well as Nordic Brown pre-oxidised copper giving either light or dark brown oxidisation that otherwise takes time to develop in the environment. Selectaglaze Helps Keep ‘Silence In The Library’ Windows are an important architectural element of a building but those with single glazing provide minimal thermal insulation, poor acoustics and little security. Secondary glazing can provide a discreet and practical solution to these issues and is very suited to Traditional or Listed buildings. This is especially important for Libraries as they need to offer a haven of peace, quiet and comfort. As part of Nottinghamshire County Council’s recent £5.3m building extension and upgrade programme of the West Bridgford Library, Selectaglaze, the UK’s leading designer of secondary glazing, was briefed to treat the twelve sash windows, two with arched over-lights, in the building’s original façade. Secondary glazing can be sympathetically installed in fully occupied buildings with minimal disruption. A secondary window is a reversible adaptation which, with sensitive design, achieves more significant noise insulation than standard double glazed units, typically 45dB, and reduces heat loss by over half. Olympic Wall Tile Mural Wins Top Honour The team responsible for creating two vast and complex wall tile murals in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London, has just won a top honour for its outstanding achievement. The esteemed Worshipful Company of Tylers and Bricklayers, which names just a single project every three years as the winner of its Triennial Award for Wall and Floor Tiling, presented the Award to UK tile manufacturer and co-ordinator of the project Craven Dunnill Jackfield on 17 July. The Award recognises the outstanding skills of the team involved, including artist Clare Woods, tile manufacturer and project coordinator Craven Dunnill Jackfield, and tiling contractor Miller Druck International Stone Ltd. The prestigious project had to meet tight budget and time constraints, set by the Olympic Delivery Authority. The sheer scale of the murals (757.2m²) and the exacting interpretation of the artwork caused countless technical challenges throughout the two year project. Over 30,000 ceramic tiles, in a multitude of shapes and sizes, were supplied by Craven Dunnill Jackfield; many involved new ceramic tile decorating techniques, developed specifically for the project. After the presentation of the Triennial Award, Adrian Blundell, Head of Production at Craven Dunnill Jackfield, commented: “This was a high profile and exciting project, a golden opportunity to demonstrate Jackfield’s unique mural expertise on a world stage and we succeeded, creating stunning works of art which are now part of the Olympic legacy”. Dallmer Floor Drains Prove Their Fitness At easyGym Dallmer has supplied its stylish CeraLine shower channels for a chain of popular private fitness clubs stretching from the capital to the Midlands: being specified for their high discharge rates and excellent installation characteristics as well as their attractive appearance: proving their all-round fitness for purpose. The easyGym operates 10 venues created by the group, which had previously spread its wings from airline flights to budget hotels. The Fulham gym, with five female and five male shower cubicles, is one of the latest venues to be refurbished. Dallmer was able to supply the CeraLine W2000 units so that they could be finished on site. This latest contract was carried out by main contractor, Lovebuild. Work was completed on schedule, in June, with the design of the rugged, stainless steel and polypropylene drainage channels helping to speed both the plumbing connections and the laying of the floor tiling. The two metre long sections of channel feature sanded flanges to ensure a secure bond with the under-tile waterproofing layer; while the height adjustable legs facilitate millimetre accurate levelling. As in this instance the CeraLine is normally aligned with the wall of the shower area to remove water effectively from the surrounding floor surface. In fact with water filling to a depth of 20 mm around the CeraLine W2000, the hydraulic design of the Dallmer channel offers a flow rate of 1.4 litres per second compared to just 0.8 for standard channels. The CeraLine W2000 can also be laid with temporary blanking plates while the waste water connection is made using a ball-jointed side outlet which is adjustable from 0-15 degrees. Mapei System Provides First Line Of Defence At IWM London A Mapei system of flooring products has been specified as part of a major redevelopment at IWM London. Part of the Imperial War Museums, the historic museum has been transformed to mark the centenary of the First World War; the design– created by architects Foster + Partners - improves access, circulation, as well as creating new vistas to the park outside. Mapei’s high performance cementitious flooring system, Ultratop, was chosen to complement the exhibits and provide a low maintenance floor coupled with resistance to heavy pedestrian traffic. All works were co-ordinated by IWM’s Construction Managers, Lend Lease, and Mapei systems were installed by Polished Concrete Designs for ITC Concepts Ltd. The transformed IWM London includes new world-class First World War Galleries, a newly configured atrium and temporary events space over six floors displaying iconic large objects, new retail outlets and a café opening into the adjoining park. Sika Provides Complete Transformation Solution For Leeds’ Oldest Multi-Storey Car Park Forming part of the multi-million pound upgrade of the iconic Merrion Centre in Leeds, Sika working with Town Centre Securities PLC, Town Centre Car Parks, GMI Construction Group, Curtins Consulting and Makers Construction Ltd has provided a range of concrete repair, structural strengthening and corrosion management systems during a major refurbishment of the 950 space multi-storey car park which will see it transformed into a more welcoming and stylish facility as well as the most modern and technologically advanced car park in Leeds. Makers Construction Ltd were appointed by consulting engineers Curtins Consulting and main contractor GMI Construction Group to carry out the repairs and undertake the largest project of this type in Europe. The phased refurbishment of the ageing concrete structure included a series of major concrete and structural repairs, new expansion joints and new anti-carbonation and waterproof coatings. The car park needed to use several systems to meet the different needs of each level with each area having to be durable and resistant to chemicals and abrasion. The external top decking also had to have superb crack bridging properties to accommodate freezethawing and the dynamic movement which is associated with reinforced concrete structures and exposure to UV. The project engineer required an uplift in strength of the reinforced concrete elements of the car park, in order to achieve the required structural strengthening of the car park. Sika proposed the use of a carbon fibre structural strengthening system using SikaWrap Anchors and the high performance SikaWrap 300, a reinforced carbon fibre fabric which was used for the flexural and shear strengthening of slabs within the building structure. Sika CarboDur Plates were used to strengthen the reinforced concrete beams on the car park structure. Sika CarboDur is a Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) system which is designed to provide high performance structural stability in the most demanding reinforcement applications. Due to high chlorides levels and low concrete cover to the reinforcement, an effective corrosion management system was required to be incorporated as part of the refurbishment works. 903+ was spray applied to the remaining areas of the concrete slab to protect against further corrosion occurring to the steel reinforcement due to the presence of chlorides and carbonation. Sika Rapid Repair Mortar was used for the smaller concrete deck repairs due to its fast application process, excellent adhesion and long term performance. Offering high early strength, this one component, fast setting cementitious repair mortar exceeds the BS EN1504 regulations for concrete repair and protection and is ideal for use on both horizontal and vertical concrete surfaces. For deeper and large volume surface repairs, Sika Armorex Armorcrete was used. Before applying the waterproofing and surface finishes to the car park decks, the substrates were cleaned and prepared using a vacuum shot blasting operation. For the intermediate decks, a system featuring Sikafloor 161, Sikafloor 375N Elastic and Sikafloor 358 was chosen. Sikafloor 161, 2 part epoxy resin, was used as a highly moisture resistant primer. It was then covered with a layer of Sikafloor 375N Elastic, a solvent free highly elastic polyurethane membrane with crack bridging properties and a seal coat of Sikafloor 358. Broadcast with quartz aggregate for anti-slip qualities and resistance to abrasion, it is an ideal choice for car park applications. For the exposed top decks, which were failing and delaminated in large areas exposing the the concrete deck to water ingress, the company’s SikaFloor Pronto decking system combined long term waterproofing integrity and exceptional resistance with a fast application that minimises the time that the car park deck would be unoperational. Featuring PMMA (polymethyl methacrylic), the resin flooring system is ready for foot traffic after one hour and fully cured after two. With the renovation on track towards its completion in November 2014, the specification of a range of innovative products from Sika will ensure the car park is transformed within the shortest timeframe possible.
