Hanover Building Unveiled By Remmers New Sarnafil Plus CPD For Ever Changing Industry Sika Sarnafil has launched a new and improved ‘Successful Roof Refurbishment’ Continual Professional Development (CPD) seminar, aimed at those looking to specify high performance products for roof renovations. Created by the experts at Sarnafil Plus, the interactive RICS Approved CPD has been updated specifically to aid specifiers, including building surveyors, facilities managers and building managers, in their decision making process. The CPD contains vital up-to-date information on how to identify the causes of roof failure, investigation methods, compliance with efficiency regulations, system options and how to specify the best materials for a project. The CPD can be combined with a live demonstration where attendees are shown the various Sarnafil waterproofing systems being installed and get the chance to try their hand at welding the membrane themselves. Head of sales for single ply membranes at Sika, John O’Raw explains why Sarnafil Plus chose to upgrade and improve the CPD: “With the refurbishment market growing fast we noticed that building managers, FMs, architects and surveyors were increasingly seeking out the latest information about regulations and roofing systems. An update was essential to provide the highest quality educational material to meet those needs. The CPD provides attendees with invaluable knowledge about current legislation and regulations, including British Standards, EU Standards, energy efficiency requirements as set out in Part L and BREEAM assessments, as well as learning about our newly available site inspection and supervision tool.” The CPD is 60 minutes long, including a question and answer session, and will be delivered by one of four dedicated experienced Sarnafil Plus Refurbishment Surveyors. The Grade II Listed building located in Manchester City Centre is being refurbished by Quadriga Contracts Ltd as part of the NOMA regeneration scheme to provide Grade A office space, retail and leisure facilities. Constructed in 1905; the interior walls have accumulated a thick build-up of dust, dirt, polish and even nicotine residue, all of which needed to be removed. Following trials of various products, Remmers Arte Mundit Eco was selected as it is a self-vulcanising cleaning paste designed for thorough, water-free removal of residues and soiling on a wide range of substrates. The Arte Mundit Eco was applied using a 4” brush and left to ‘set’ overnight. The set rubber-like material was then removed by hand the following day revealing the original white marble finish. www.remmers.co.uk

Offsite Solutions Wins Award Commendation For Its Latest Innovation In Bathroom Pod Construction Offsite Solutions, the UK’s leading bathroom pod manufacturer, has received an industry award commendation at this year’s Offsite Construction Awards for its latest innovation – demountable GRP bathroom pods. This advancement in bathroom pod technology, developed for buildings with restricted access, was highly commended in the Product Innovation of the Year category. The Offsite Construction Awards celebrate the best in precision building design and delivery, rewarding outstanding examples of prefabrication and factory-based products and systems, which are helping to create a better built environment – more sustainably, cost effectively, and with greater efficiency. Commenting on the award commendation, James Stephens, Managing Director of Offsite Solutions, said, “We were delighted to receive this latest accolade. It is fantastic to have such recognition from our industry for our commitment to design and innovation. We are continually pushing the boundaries to improve the efficiency of bathroom construction for our customers. Bathroom pods had previously been limited to new build. The development of our demountable solution has expanded the application of offsite to refurbishment and conversion projects.” Demountable bathroom pods radically reduce work on site, and offer the superior and consistent quality of factory-built bathrooms. Eight GRP pods can be reassembled on site in just one day with a threeperson team. This compares to site-built bathrooms on a typical scheme, which can take 6-12 weeks to complete requiring up to 15 different trades and a high level of site management and supervision.
GO!PUBLIC : SEPTEMBER 2017
In refurbishment and conversion projects, the only access may be through the window openings of an existing building – or internally via the main entrance and stairwells – and this may not be sufficient for a full-sized pod. The panel sizes of a demountable GRP pod are specially designed to ensure full access is achievable. Now available in the complete range of GRP bathroom designs from Offsite Solutions, the demountable option has a unique sectional design where the shower tray forms part of the floor and the wall panels create the shower enclosure. Holes for sanitaryware are predrilled and only the shower door is then installed on site. The pod walls are completely vertical with 90° corners – unlike pods created from complete GRP moulds which have tapered walls – so integration is very simple. Around 1,500 of Offsite Solutions’ GRP demountable pods have already been installed. Applications include student residences, military accommodation, hotels, apartments, care homes, and hospitals – both new build and refurbishment projects. Offsite Solutions offers a comprehensive and expanding range of bathroom pods to suit different building types and applications. Options include steel-framed pods with traditional tiled finishes for high-end apartments, student residences and hotels; robust and low maintenance GRP composite pods for student accommodation, care homes, social housing and healthcare, and hybrid pods for specialist projects. Superquilt Multi-Layer Foil Earns Agrement Approval The effectiveness of SuperQuilt, part of the YBS range, as a single layer insulation solution for use beneath pitched roof rafters, in either new-build or refurbishment situations has been underlined by the award of a coveted BBA Certificate. Agrement Certificate 17/5388 explains in detail how the already widely specified, multilayer foil insulation can be used to retain energy within attic or habitable loft spaces: cutting fuel bills, improving comfort levels for building occupants and adding value. Importantly it can be employed to address detail areas such as the cheeks of dormers, dwarf walls, bonnet hips and other features. The Certification comes after prolonged evaluation by the British Board of Agrement and covers such considerations as related Building Regulation matters. design criteria, ventilation and installation guidance, as well as regular review by the highly respect authority. Crucially, the Agrement Certificate confirms that under normal conditions the durability of the SuperQuilt will be equivalent to that of the roof it is installed within and will contribute to controlling condensation in the roof space, while offering very good thermal performance. The emissivity of 0.03 for the outer foil is complemented by a declared core thermal resistance of 1.35 m2KW. The Certificate further states that the BBA believes SuperQuilt can satisfy the requirements of not only the Building Regulations 2010 (England and Wales), but also the Building Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2012, The Building (Scotland) Regulations 2004: making it “fit for purpose” nationwide. www.ybsinsulation.com

When Fire Compartmentation Really Matters Here, Richard Sutton, General Manager at Horbury Property Services, looks at fire compartmentation and why it is so important to ensure that this is not breached. “Fire safety is something that is often taken for granted, yet is vitally important, particularly in public buildings. When the building is less than 10 years ago, it will have been built in accordance with Building Regulations Approved Document B, which requires that it be sub-divided into a number of discreet compartments or cells. Within each cell, the dividing walls are filled with specialist materials that prevent the passage of fire from one cell to another for a given period of time. Compartmentation aims to contain fires, based on the premise that large fires are more dangerous to occupants, fire and rescue services and people located nearby. It has also been found to limit damage to a building and its contents. One of the main benefits of compartmentation is that it protects ‘means of escape’ routes from a building. This feature is particularly important where there is minimal fire separation, other than the means of escape, for example, a simple office building, served by a single flight of stairs. In this case, the floor area may be open plan, with no partitions, however, the stair should be enclosed by fire walls (and fire doors) to ensure a fire within any part of the accommodation cannot pass through to the stairway. Spaces that connect fire compartments, such as stairways and service shafts, are described as ‘protected shafts’. These play an important role in restricting fire spread between the compartments. Larger buildings have greater reliance on fire compartmentation. In high rise residential buildings, for example, each flat is generally treated as its own ‘cell’, therefore fire spread from one cell to another should not occur. Depending on the size of the flat, additional fire separation may be required within it to protect the occupants’ means of escape. Assessing the risks Fire risk assessments should be carried out by a competent person, but in the majority of cases this does not extend to inspecting the integrity of the fire compartmentation. When building services work has been carried out there is a high risk that fire compartmentation could have been breached, which significantly increases the risks of fire spread. This was the case on a number of projects which we recently assessed in the North of England. Our client had carried out routine fire risk assessments, which identified that the fire compartmentation to these public buildings
had been breached and was no longer providing an effective fire barrier. The breaches were mainly above ceiling level or within little used cupboards and risers which were hidden from normal view. On further analysis, it was found that there were three main causes for the breaches. Firstly it was found that fire stopping had not been completed correctly at the initial installation. Secondly repairs and maintenance activities had been carried out since the building was occupied, but without adequate fire stopping. Finally, parts of the building had been remodelled and refurbished without adequate fire stopping. Horbury Property Services carried out a detailed survey of the fire compartmentation and fire breaches. This work was carried out at weekends and overnight using a smartphone-enabled survey system. Each penetration was marked with a QR code and unique identification number and photographed for future reference. Building layout drawings were also marked with every penetration, which included instances of the wrong fire stopping material being used. Our FIRAS accredited team was then appointed to complete the works to make each building completely fire safe. Each time we made safe a fire penetration it was captured on our survey system and photographed. After all the works were completed, the client was supplied with comprehensive reports detailing all the works, materials used and drawings. In these cases, the client can be assured that the fire compartmentation system will operate to the required specification, which includes giving occupants a certain number of minutes in which to escape. Fire separation, if installed correctly, does have an enviable success rate, however it is the weaknesses that must be constantly considered, particularly when building service alterations take place. As a result of this, the importance of fire risk assessments cannot be underestimated and if the assessment is not sufficiently rigorous, it could lead to a potential failing of fire compartmentation, allowing a fire to spread. There are very serious considerations for local authorities and landlords who do not undertake adequate risk assessments as it could compromise the safety of the whole building. Local authorities would be well advised to ensure that when fire risk assessments are carried out this includes a review of a building’s fire compartmentation by a competent person or external fire inspection company, thus minimising risks to occupants and a building.” For more information about fire compartmentation, fire stopping and fire stopping inspections, contact the Horbury Property Services team on: 01709 917555 or visit www.horburypropertyservices.com.

Smoke & Co Alarm Quality; What’s In A Word? Most people want a certain level of quality in the product they are installing; when it comes to life saving devices, including Smoke and Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarms, that quality bar needs to be set high. But how do you actually identify quality in an alarm? Setting Standards Domestic alarms sold in the UK should be tested and approved (i.e. Kitemarked) to BS EN 14604 for Smoke Alarms, BS 5446-2 for Heat Alarms and BS EN 50292 for CO Alarms. The Kitemark is vital as it confirms the alarm has been third party tested to the standard.
Telecare/Warden Call systems, Sprinkler systems and BS5839 Part 1 panel based Fire Alarm systems. Data extraction directly from an alarm in situ is another really useful alarm feature and a key indicator of quality. Smoke and CO Alarms have the potential to provide genuinely useful information such as battery back-up or battery life, alarm sensor status, number of times tested and removed and alarm activation details. More recently, this data extraction has extended to cover whole systems.
However, there are some major differences in the build and quality of alarms, mostly as a result of manufacturing costs. For example, a good quality alarm will have careful circuit design that incorporates components to smooth out ‘transients’ which are often the cause of intermittent, random beeping and can even trigger fully fledged nuisance alarms. Test and Test Again Look for a manufacturer that tests every single alarm that leaves their premises. It’s a major task that has an impact on the price of the product but when you’re dealing with a life saving device we believe it’s essential. Avoid products that are batch tested. Power Supply Mains powered alarms with rechargeable Lithium cell back up is the best option as it doesn’t require battery changes and will continue to function as normal even in the event of a power failure. Furthermore the Lithium cells cannot be removed and, in any case, are not suitable for use in other devices. Features of Note A quality, well designed alarm also comes with many features. Top of this list has to be the ability to interconnect the alarms wirelessly. Fire Alarm interconnection is a requirement of BS 5839-6 and Building Regulations. When an alarm system is installed using traditional hard-wired interconnection, the disruption and cosmetic damage to property is significant. Therefore, ensure an alarm has the ability to do this wirelessly, through the use of Radio Frequency (RF) signals; it’s faster, cost-effective and flexible. RF technology has given rise to the ability to readily interconnect a Fire / CO Alarm system to other systems; the most common being
GO!PUBLIC : SEPTEMBER 2017
Accessories The better quality alarm systems on the market now come with a choice of accessories and system add ons. Some of the most beneficial, in my opinion, are those that provide an added element of control to the alarm system, such as Test, Silence and Locate switches. These allow the resident to test and silence all the alarms on the system from the one conveniently placed switch as well as allowing for quick identification of the unit that has caused the alarm. It’s fair to say that quality comes at a premium. With fire and CO detection equipment you really do get what you pay for and spending less can mean a noticeable effect on alarm performance, providing a false economy. Installing quality fire and CO detection equipment is a financially sound long term strategy and one that residents deserve. A wholly owned subsidiary of Ei Electronics, Aico is the market leader in residential fire and CO protection in the UK. All alarms are designed and built in Ireland specifically to meet the UK standards and regulations. www.aico.co.uk

Bacteria Has Nowhere To Hide As New Sanitaryware Products Are Launched To Battle In-Hospital Infection Healthcare bathrooms can, if not carefully managed, provide virulent breeding grounds for the growth of bacteria and the spread of infection. Luckily, new innovations from sanitaryware brand Armitage Shanks can help to fight bacteria and provide optimum hygiene and infection control within hospitals. Here, the iconic British brand discusses its new Markwik 21+ fittings and Contour 21+ clinical ceramics ranges. About Markwik 21+ Features are used throughout Markwik 21+’s design to maximise antimicrobial effect. A manual thermal flush feature allows maintenance staff to override the thermostat and flush the fitting through with very hot water, preventing bacterial depositing. An
integral thermostat enables water to be mixed closer to the point of discharge – eliminating the cold water ‘dead leg’ and minimizing warm water areas. Auto-flush technology ensures electronic fittings that are irregularly used are flushed with water every day, preventing bacteria formation. A ‘hydro-purge’ facility flushes water through the pipework and inlets to ensure a debris free system after installation and enable flushing after chemical disinfection. Detachable spouts, one piece designs and demountable body components allow for complete washer disinfection, reducing the risk of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Legionella. GO!PUBLIC : SEPTEMBER 2017

Altro Solution Brings Life To Design-Led Hull Birth Centre A complete floors and walls solution from Altro has been used to create a relaxing, stylish and home from home environment for mums-to-be in a new birth centre at Hull Women and Children’s Hospital. The new midwife-led Fatima Allam Birth Centre has been designed to meet the needs of women who want a more natural childbirth experience. It comprises three birthing rooms, each individually designed to create a homely and relaxed feel in beautiful surroundings, while also providing a safe, hygienic environment. Andrew Ledger, contracts manager for Apleona, which provides facilities management for the building, oversaw the new construction and was part of the team that devised the overall concept of the birth centre. “We had a very specific idea of what we wanted the centre to look like, and how we wanted it to function,” Andrew says. “As a midwife-led unit, a relaxed and homely atmosphere was essential, however a priority was of course infection control, hygiene, durability and quality. “We specified Altro floors and walls from the start because we are using these products elsewhere in the hospital with a great deal of success. They meet all our clinical hygiene and infection control needs, while also offering a superb range of colours and textures. Professional artist and designer Adele Howitt, from Studio Eleven Gallery & Workshop in Hull, won a commission from the hospital to design the interior concept for the new birth centre. She provided various colour ways, materials, and themes, to inspire the team. The colour palette was agreed and a range of approved products to work with, including Altro floors and walls. “Once we had decided on colours, we worked closely with Altro to look at the specific products that would meet our brief. I wanted each of the birthing rooms in the new centre to have its own individual style,
personality, textures and colours, with the feel of a chic boutique hotel. But I chose an overall theme to link them, which was flowers of Egyptian mythology, one for each room — Lotus, Persea and Jasmine. “ “Rather than hanging pictures on the walls, I wanted to create more profound artistic design features in the birth and shower rooms so I used Altro Whiterock Digiclad to create statement walls from floor to ceiling. This is a fantastic product for design-led projects because you can print any image or photograph onto it, and the quality is superb.” Altro Whiterock Digiclad™ is ideal for creating the right impression with a bespoke design on your wall. Altro Whiterock Digiclad is created by reproducing a photographic image or vector art on to Altro Whiterock wall sheet, with consistent, photographic quality. Hard-coat technology provides scratch-resistant properties for added surface protection, making Altro Whiterock Digiclad ideal for areas where durability is important. Adele chose Altro Whiterock Satins™ for the shower rooms. She says “It has some wonderful shades, and the subtle, sheer texture is very stylish. It provides all the impact resistance and hygiene you would expect from Altro Whiterock, with a stain-resistant, wipe-clean surface.” Flooring for the birth centre was key to creating the homely, nonclinical feel. Andrew Ledger and the project team wanted natural, warm, wood-effect flooring and chose Altro Wood™ for the three bedrooms and corridors. Andrew and his team also specified a wayfinding system for the new centre to help those with partial sight and dementia. The system comprises a border of Altro WalkwayTM 20 safety flooring in black fitted around the edge of all the floors in the bedrooms and corridors. www.altro.co.uk

The Transformation Of Oldham Town Hall In 2009 Oldham Town Hall was named by the Victorian Society as one of the top ten endangered buildings. After a £37 million redevelopment, it has been transformed and is now a major cinema and leisure complex, complete with its rich architectural heritage.
likewise required the creation of numerous moulds to accommodate the left and right window reveals. This running border also involved the hand-manufacture of bulb-glazed, square tiles in two colours, accurately matched in hue.
A major element of the recently completed project was to replace over 2,000 of the original ceramic wall tiles, in 55 different formats and designs, which dated back to 1917. The preservation of the Grade II listed building’s heritage is testimony to the innovative and meticulous restoration approach adopted by Craven Dunnill Jackfield. The company employed traditional techniques so as to achieve a virtually seamless match to the remaining original tiles.
Rising towards the ceiling is a band of plain yellow tiles for which Jackfield manufactured some 1200 replacements. The project entailed extensive trials to ensure the seamless and historically accurate transition from original to replacement tiles, and required the approval of the designated Conservation Officer and Planning Authority.
In 2012, plans by the Council to re-develop the building as a state-ofthe-art, seven-screen cinema and leisure complex were given approval. The Grade II listed building’s heritage has been preserved thanks to innovative restoration work, whilst a large, glass light-box addition to the side allows for new circulation areas and services. Craven Dunnill Jackfield was commissioned by the specialist contractor Heritage Project Contracts to painstakingly copy and manufacture matching wall tiles for the centrepiece Egyptian Room and ante rooms. The project comprised over 55 different tile types and 2,000 decorated and plain field tiles, which all required precise matching to the surviving Pilkington originals. For most of the 55 designs, new moulds needed to be made as many of the tiles are unique sizes and embossed with a variety of decorative features. Striking, tile-clad pillars dominate the room, for which Jackfield produced three variations of the embossed, yellow leaf design to cater for the tapered dimensions. For the base of each pillar, eight different styles of tiles were required, all with intricate embossed detailing. The Greek Key pattern around the upper section of the room’s walls

Gemma Ball, Senior Sales Manager at Craven Dunnill Jackfield managed the project from the outset. “We worked to a detailed survey supplied by Heritage Project Contracts and were fortunate to have original tiles from which to make the new moulds. Such complex projects require a team of ceramic experts with a wealth of skills in restoration work, from detailed mould-making to specialist glazes. Unexpected challenges are common, once you start to work with tiles on a heritage site. However, this project went smoothly from the outset and we have been complimented on how the new tiles blend perfectly with the originals.” Tile manufacturer: Craven Dunnill Jackfield www.cravendunnilljackfield.co.uk T: 01952884124 Restoration specialist: Heritage Project Contracts Ltd: T: 01743 460035 www.heritageprojectcontracts.com Main contractor: Morgan Sindall www.morgansindall.com

Skating In The Quiet Some of the noisiest buildings are sports facilities such as ice rinks, halls and swimming pools where hard surfaces and large spaces exacerbate echoes and chatter. Architects Christensen & Co which designed a new and very inviting ice skating rink in Ørestad, a fast-developing suburb of Copenhagen, used a popular and very effective solution to the problem. To reduce sound reverberation, Troldtekt natural wood wool acoustic panels were installed to provide a calm and uniform surface, together with integrated lighting. The ceilings in the heated part of the ice rink provide a natural surface with a warm glow, contrasting between the cold crystalline rink and the warm club facilities. Designed as a venue for sport and fun, the architects carefully thought out their choice of materials and finishes, such as concrete, wood and glass and acoustic panels. The City of Copenhagen also invested additional funds to ensure the project was eco-friendly both in its construction and daily operation. Specified throughout the UK and Europe, the benefits of 100% Troldtekt natural wood wool panels include high sound absorption, high durability, natural breathability, low cost life cycle performance and sustainability as documented by Cradle to Cradle certification at silver level. Available in various sizes and in three grades from ultrafine to coarse, they can be left untreated or painted in virtually any RAL colour. www.troldtekt.co.uk

Independence, Inclusivity And Respect With multigenerational living on the rise, Housing Association properties must accommodate the varying needs of residents of a range of ages and abilities. Daniel Ward, Senior Ceramics Product Manager for Twyford, looks at the options in the bathroom; ensuring independence and inclusivity for all. Housing Association properties need to deliver on a number of levels, meeting the needs of the variety of tenants that may walk through their doors, with robust, cost-effective yet quality products installed to withstand often high volumes of traffic. With the bathroom so essential to everyone, choosing solutions that are accessible and practical is very important. This is particularly relevant where more than one generation is living under the same roof - recent research (www.bbc.co.uk/news/ magazine-36396217) suggests households containing two or more families will rise from 1.5 million to 2.2 million by 2025. Apart from the nuts and bolts of sanitation, other considerations, such as storage or easier cleaning, will make life easier for occupants. Accessibility - The first consideration for any bathroom is its accessibility; can it be used by most people? Can the basin be reached, the taps be turned on, is washing (bath or shower) safe and simple, and is getting on and off the WC an easy task? Basic but essential elements that will help tenants keep safe and those with mobility issues maintain their independence.
• • • • •
Taps: Choose thermostatic, lever taps that are easy to turn on for young or arthritic fingers and prevent scalding. Showers: In general, showers are easier to access than baths. Flush to the floor shower trays will prevent slipping and the incorporation of a seat is a great option for anyone unable to stand for long periods of time. Baths: Baths featuring head rests, seats and a wider edge (ideal for a parent or carer to sit on) will improve washing options for the very young and elderly. Basins: Short projection, wide basins are easier to access by wheelchair users, as well as looking modern and stylish. When incorporated with short projection cupboard space underneath, easy-access storage is also covered. WCs: Comfort height WCs are a great option for those with mobility issues and are far easier to get on and off if in a wheel chair, making no difference to able bodied users.
•
Flooring: Choose non-slip, textured flooring to prevent unnecessary falls.
Practicality - Beyond safety and usability concerns, a bathroom that works well for multiple occupants of varying ages and abilities must have storage at its core. Everyone needs their own space and by including well-thought out options to tidy away toiletries, the room will appear less cluttered and be easier to clean. However cramped the conditions, there is usually some form of storage that can incorporated. Tall, tower units, for example, make use of the unused space up the wall, providing multiple shelves so all the family can have their own. In addition, storage can be included under basins, in the recess under the bath and even in movable stools. Practicality also extends to how easy the room is to clean; a particular concern for vulnerable tenants. Promoting ‘easy cleaning’ is also something landlords will support, helping to encourage residents to keep properties in good order. When it comes to the WC, an area most associated with germs, Rimfree toilets, which were originally developed to meet the stringent demands on healthcare buildings, are an ideal solution. Wall-hung WCs, basins and even furniture are the direction modern bathrooms are moving, offering stylistic as well as practical benefits. By removing pedestals, floor-standing pans and legs, dust and germs have nowhere to collect and cleaning around and underneath them is easy. Combining Rimfree technology with wall-hung is the perfect combination. With an aging population, rising house prices, rents and tuition fees forcing young people to stay at home for longer and the benefits of ‘live-in’ babysitters for working parents, multigenerational living is a trend that’s set to endure. Housing Associations have a commitment to meet the requirements of the changing family, while keeping tenants safe. By choosing quality, fit for purpose solutions, bathrooms will not only last longer, they will hopefully also be respected.

Safety Can Be Spectacular With Gerflor Built on the site of the old Myerscough Hall, some six miles north of Preston, Myerscough College is a Higher and Further Education college dating back to the 19th century. The college itself sets extremely high standards when it comes to their curriculum and the results they expect from both staff and students alike. Therefore, it’s no surprise that when new flooring had to be installed they would turn to international flooring specialists Gerflor to supply the quality, design and durability they were seeking. It would be a task perfectly suited to Gerflor’s high-performing Taralay Impression Control and Tarasafe safety flooring ranges. The ultimate responsibility for the actual installation would fall to Chorley-based CRT Flooring Specialists Ltd in Lancashire. CRT Flooring are a professional, commercial and domestic flooring contractor who pride themselves in delivering high quality workmanship and excellent levels of professional service for every installation they undertake. Managing Director Chris Turner commented, “the project at Myerscough College in Preston went really well. We specified Gerflor’s Taralay Impression Control for corridors which, as we predicted, would experience heavy volumes of student traffic, so this was a perfect choice as it’s a Group T rated product which means it will wear very well”. Chris Turner went on to further add, “The Taralay Impression Control Compact product installed in a wood design effect looked stunning. It’s a top-performing product that’s got a fantastic pedigree which is why we chose it. Its R11 slip resistance qualities are right at the top of the performance category, which is crucial for any area with the risk of slips or falls. It’s a great looking product, as the wood effect looks extremely realistic and it’s also very easy to clean.” With over-70 years’ experience, Gerflor’s expertise in safety flooring that delivers the highest standards of safety and durability is second to none. Gerflor won the 2016 CFJ/CFA Product of the Year category with their Taralay Impression Control safety flooring range. No easy task! This safety flooring collection is the perfect option for education new builds and refurbishments where high volumes of footfall are expected. A multi-purpose floorcovering available in 2m sheet format with a Group T wear rating, it’s ideal for a host of heavy traffic environments where slip resistance is a must. Available as a dual collection: - ‘Safety in Wood’ and ‘Safety in Design’, the range includes realistic woods in contemporary colours and modern all over designs. Taralay Impression Control also has a Pendulum Test value +36, meets HSE guidelines (BS 7976-2), a surface roughness of >20 RTM-RZ and R11 ramp test value (DIN 51130), together with providing 24 design-led colourways and is perfect for a host of other GO!PUBLIC : SEPTEMBER 2017

With the Protecsol® Control surface treatment it’s easy to clean, is 100% recyclable, offering a state-of-theart flooring solution for a myriad of education applications. Chris Turner further said, “we also specified the Tarasafe Ultra H20 safety flooring range because it does exactly what Gerflor says it does. Great slip resistance in the wet, either with or without shoes. Again, it looked brilliant when it was laid down.” Changing rooms and showering areas in many colleges, schools or universities can often be wet and slippery environments and that’s where Tarasafe Ultra H20 from Gerflor is the ideal solution. Intended for traditional barefoot spaces where there are continuous wet areas, Tarasafe Ultra H20 also offers a shod solution, providing a perfect blend of flooring applications for those areas where wet flooring conditions can be an issue. Within Gerflor’s other top performing Tarasafe vinyl safety flooring range there are over 80 finishes available to choose from. They are reinforced with a glass fibre grid and are suitable for use in all areas of heavy traffic where slip-resistance, durability and hygienic conditions are required. Using mineral crystal particles, rather than the industry standard carborundum, Tarasafe, with its improved performance, is easier to install, lighter and more flexible to handle. The range has a maximum hygiene rating meeting the EN Standard 22196 for anti-bacterial activity (E. coli - S. aureus - MRSA) (3) returning >99% levels of growth inhibition and comes with a 12-year warranty and is also 100% recyclable. Tarasafe is stain and chemical resistant. The Tarasafe Standard range comes with the unique UV cured PUR surface treatment and their Tarasafe Ultra range (excluding their Tarasafe Ultra H20 offer) also sees a benefit from the SparClean® surface treatment, therefore no polish for life. Tarasafe is a hugely popular choice for a host of education environments where slip resistance needs to be maintained. Chris Turner finally commented, “There’s no doubt that Gerflor products are not the most expensive on the market, but they do deliver exactly what they say. In fact, they’re good, if not better than some other manufacturers who charge a lot more.” Learn more about Gerflor solutions, ask for a free sample or contact us to speak to a specialist today by calling 01926 622 600, emailing contractuk@gerflor.com, or visiting gerflor.co.uk for the latest innovations.

Odourless Roofing Solution Provides Remedy For St George’s Hospital St George’s Hospital has a staff of more than 8,500 and is the largest NHS hospital in South West London, serving a local population of 1.3 million and delivering specialist provision for large areas of Surry and Sussex too. The hospital has sites in both Tooting and Wandsworth, and the Wandsworth site has just completed a second roof refurbishment using solvent-free Kemperol 2K-PUR; a cold-applied liquid waterproofing membrane that is odourless and requires no hot works, making it ideal for hospital roof installations. Odourless Specification - The hospital’s Wandsworth site combines patient treatment and healthcare with an active research facility and a mortuary in its ‘Jenner Wing.’ It was here that a previous roof refurbishment was carried out in 2014 using Kemper System’s cold– applied liquid waterproofing. Following the success of that scheme a second two-phase roof overlay project has been delivered, involving refurbishment of Jenner Wing’s Block D; a building that combines patient areas on the lower floors, with research and laboratory facilities on the upper floors, along with a basement mortuary.
Roughly 80% of the resin used in Kemperol 2K-PUR is obtained from the seeds of the tropical castor plant, a sustainable resource, and both the primer and the resin are solvent-free and odourless, with installation in a single process without the need for any potentially hazardous or disruptive hot works. Flexible Installation - Before each phase could begin, lifting equipment was used to raise the air handling plant onto the roof, which was then supported on rubber feet. The loose chippings on the roof were then removed by a mechanical scabbler to prepare the surface for the overlay of the new membrane. However, in areas below the air handling plant where the machine could not be used, this process had to be carried out by hand. Around the perimeter of the roof there is a railing that supports the basket used for window cleaning and, inside this, the roof is covered with paving slabs, which had to be removed so that the waterproofing membrane could be installed underneath. With the slabs removed and set aside for re-use where possible, the installation team cleaned the surface using jet washing equipment prior to application of the primer once the roof was dry.
The total roof area of Block D is more than 1700m2 so the project was divided into two phases, with 940m2 of cold-applied liquid membrane installed in phase one, followed by the 819m2 phase two installation. Both phases were installed as an overlay onto the existing asphalt roof. The building features a significant amount of air handling equipment on the roof to serve the ventilation services for the patient areas, the laboratories and the mortuary, all of which is business critical to each department.
The solvent-free resin was then applied in a single wet-on-wet process. The resin was applied to the substrate and a flexible reinforcement fleece was then laid directly onto the wet resin, immediately followed by more resin on top. This ensures complete saturation of the reinforcement fleece. The resin then cured to form a seamless, elastomeric waterproof membrane that cannot delaminate, is UV stable, and bonds directly to the substrate.
Not only did this equipment need to remain operational, but it was also essential there were no nuisance odours from the programme of works that could cause disruption to patients, staff or visitors. Therefore, Kemper System’s solvent-free cold-applied liquid waterproofing was chosen, in line with the architect’s performance specification.
Service Life - Both phases of the roof overlay were completed without disruption to patient care or research activities, avoiding any strip out requirements, the nuisance odours associated with solvents and the health and safety considerations of hot works. The result is a durable, seamless roof with a BBA-accredited service life of 25 years.

This fully certified, fire rated product is not only waterproof and fully breathable, but can also increase the thermal performance of wall constructions. www.ybsinsulation.com
Studor Solution Waves Goodbye To Ugly Rooftops An architect’s vision for a ‘waveeffect’ building with no roof protrusions, to mirror the sinuous lines of nearby hills, has been achieved thanks to drainage ventilation expert Studor. Italian architects, in conjunction with the multi-discipline company STEAM, designed the c130m Monselice Hospital in Northern East Italy to ensure it not only fulfilled the highest operational requirements, but also had a profile in harmony with the adjacent sloping hillside landscape. To achieve this aesthetic look, the integrity of the rooftops needed to be maintained, and the design did not allow for any roof protrusions to interrupt the flow of the roofline. The project’s MEP contractor, Gemmo SpA, recognising that input from an expert in drainage ventilation was needed, asked Studor (with over 40 years’ experience in the field) to advise on the drainage system design. “Our solution was to cap as many stacks as possible with the Studor Maxi-Vent Air Admittance Valve (AAV) which fits discretely within the roof space”, commented Studor’s UK Technical Sales Director Daniel Rath. “The Maxi-Vent protects the trap seals within the drainage system by allowing the intake of air so that each soil pipe can maintain the right level of pressure within the system. This is critical, especially in a hospital environment, ensuring there is no cross-contamination from the drainage system into the habitable space.” “Furthermore, the Maxi-Vents eliminate the need for any roof penetrations, thus reducing the amount of pipework required saving both time and money. So, not only is the integrity of the roof maintained, but heat loss was minimised and time was saved onsite.” www.studor.net

Why Hydrogen Rich Water In Your Home? Over the last few hundred years, hydrogen gas has demonstrated a therapeutic effect on over 150 human diseases, as well as enhanced health and wellbeing. As revolutionary as this may be, what exactly is hydrogen? Furthermore, why should hydrogen be included in your water? The people of Japan have been bathing in Hydrogen Rich water for centuries, their natural hot springs, known as Onsens, are sought after for their salubrious and invigorating effects. It is well documented that dissolved Hydrogen gas is what gives the waters of Nordenau, Germany and Tlacote, Mexico, their medicinal prowess. 1978 marks the earliest record of hydrogens’ medicinal properties, where cases of inflammation were successfully treated. The topic did not gain true popularity among scientists until 2007, when an article on the benefits of hydrogen was published in the prestigious journal of Nature Medicine. Hydrogen is colourless, odorless, tasteless and non-metallic. It is the lightest and simplest element in our known universe, expressed as the symbol ‘H’. It is comprised of just a single electron and proton. Under regular conditions it exists primarily as molecular hydrogen (H2 gas). In this form, hydrogen has been shown to exert an extensive range of therapeutic effects.
When H2 gas is present in water it is referred to as Hydrogen-enriched water and is simply conventional water (H2O) that contains dissolved hydrogen gas (H2). For example, there are carbonated soft drinks such as sodas and sparkling waters that contain dissolved carbon dioxide gas (CO2). In contrast water that contains dissolved hydrogen gas, is the best bet for a longer, healthier life. Hydrogen is the smallest molecule in the universe; this minuscule proportion allows for a smooth diffusion into the sub-cellular compartments of the mitochondria and other locations in the human body. Council Upgrades All Sheltered Housing With Aico Multi Sensor Alarms
Sheffield City Council has completed a programme to upgrade its fire safety throughout its 1,134 sheltered housing properties using Aico’s Multi-Sensor Fire Alarm for an enhanced level of safety. An additional 261 properties within three tower blocks will also benefit from this premium fire alarm. Aico’s Multi-Sensor Fire Alarm contains two sensor types, optical and heat, to constantly monitor smoke and heat levels, sending and receiving information via its intelligent detection software. This sensor information alters the alarm’s sensitivity and trigger points, automatically providing the best response to all fire types and reduces potential false alarms. The Multi-Sensors are officially being installed to Category LD2 (medium protection) but with alarms also in the bedrooms; which in most properties actually equates to the higher LD1 category. www.aico.co.uk
London GP Surgery Gets The Pendock Treatment Pendock, the manufacturer of Pipe Boxing, Column Casings, Radiator Guards and specialist Perimeter Casings for heating, has supplied a range of products for work on a doctors’ practice, located in South-east London. When undertaking the refurbishment of the Albion Street Group Practice in Rotherhithe, the contractor, Westwise Service Management Ltd., rapidly identified that there was a potential risk of burn/scald injury to the building’s occupants from the heating system’s exposed pipework and radiators as well as aesthetic issues. This led the Project Manager, Huseyin Asim, to contact Pendock as a trusted past supplier to source a protection solution to the issue, which would also be practical in terms of hygiene and the cleaning regime required by a medical establishment as well as safe, the system also needed to look attractive and be straightforward to install. Being a refurbishment project, Pendock was required to produce bespoke as well as standard radiator enclosures for some of the rooms, which are also not truly square. The specialist contractor decided to purchase 17 standard and bespoke Ultima Plus Radiator Guards for the surgery: these Low Surface Temperature (LST) guards have been designed to provide the ultimate in protection against burns, while the ‘bullnose’ corners afford further safety in situations where patients might fall accidentally or be at risk from self-harm. Ultima and Ultima Plus guards, as with all items in Pendock’s radiator guard range, are finished with an anti-bacterial coating able to combat MRSA, Salmonella, E- coli and C-difficile. Charcon Partners With Local Authorities To Segregate Traffic And Cyclists The latest figures from ROSPA reported an 11 per cent decrease in the number of cyclists involved in road accidents year on year[1], but with 18,884 incidents taking place (and that’s just those that are reported), there’s still much work to do to improve the safety of cyclists on UK roads. With motorists merging into the path of cyclists, and vice versa, as one of the most common causes of cyclist accidents, Charcon, the commercial hard landscaping division of Aggregate Industries, is helping a range of local authorities by offering solutions to aid the segregation of traffic and cyclists. Charcon’s cyclist segregation solutions have already proved successful in London, on the Mayor’s flagship Cycle Superhighway 2 (CS2), where they are helping to reduce the number of accidents in the capital, as well as Bradford, Cambridge, Oxford, Bristol and Nottingham. They include: City Cycle Kerb - Featuring a half batter along the carriageway, City cycle kerb is capable of withstanding vehicular impact and a splay edge on the cycleway side, which significantly reduces the chance of cyclists catching a pedal. The system is installed on one side of the carriageway to safely segregate cyclists from passing traffic, even when on the blind side of a lorry or bus. Available in standard grey and Eco Countryside® finishes. Eco Countryside Cycle Kerb - This single piece segregation unit replicates the aesthetics of natural granite whilst containing 82% recycled and reclaimed material content. It also offers a 33% carbon reduction in comparison to a natural granite alternative. Cycle Kerb - Developed in conjunction with Cambridgeshire County Council, Cycle Kerb is produced in a standard concrete finish. The angled profile to the top face of the kerb provides both a distinct visual and tactile division between the carriageway and cycle lane. LED Floodlights Built For The British Weather… Our temperate maritime climate may be, relatively speaking mild, but it’s also quite wet – hence our lush green countryside. With much of our weather arriving from the Atlantic as well, it all adds up to a recipe for corrosion. Rusty fittings, casings, screws and brackets on outdoor lights are an all too familiar sight. Until now you could only choose to put up with it – not ideal – or make regular replacements - not exactly a modern, sustainable approach. Now, with Timeguard’s new Coastal range you can fit kit that will look good for longer. Rust is avoided because all the parts which have to be made of metal have been replaced with highgrade stainless steel, from the brackets to the screws and even pcb components. 10W, 20W and 30W floodlights with integral PIR detectors are available, all with slave terminals to connect external loads. There’s also a new parallel switching facility, so you can connect up to four floodlights in parallel such that any detector will switch them all on. Another great new feature is the curved Timeguard panning bracket. No longer do you have to align floodlights flat to the wall, this clever curved bracket enables you to pan as well as tilt. www.timeguard.com

originally designed to enhance the flow of water into the channel. The slots are super smooth, elliptical openings with the moulded bars having slightly raised triangular bosses along their outside edges. As well as providing an elegant appearance, the feature ensures surface water is directed into the slots. This configuration also helps eliminate any cross-flow over the grating.
Hauraton Limited introduced the RECYFIX® MONOTEC, surface drainage system in January 2016.The Lôn Las school, joins numerous installations successfully completed in the United Kingdom. The RECYFIX® MONOTEC system was installed to provide surface drainage in the paved entrance/play areas and the car park’s asphalt surface. Having a grating width of 100mm (Channel internal dimension) with an overall height of 280mm and a cross-section of 245.5cm2, the 176 metres of channel supplied provide a total water capacity of just over 4329 litres.
The smooth grating and tough nature of the channel, up to load category of Class D400, made the system ideal for the non-trafficked areas such as the entrance area and school play yard as well as staff care parks and access roads. I was particularly please the site contractor Dawnus Construction found these channels easy to handle on site. As each channel component only weighed 8.63kg, this feature eliminated the need for mechanical lifting gear”.
The MONOTEC one metre long channel component is of a sturdy monolithic design where the HEELSAFE grating and the tongue and groove linking system are integral to the channel moulding. The whole unit is made of tough, virtually unbreakable polypropylene (PP) formulated to be very resistant to daily temperature fluctuations from frost conditions to strong sunlight, including the Ultra Violet (UV) spectrum. PP is naturally resistant to de-icing salt. Complying with the requirements of EN 1433, the PP is given its UV resistance by adding just sufficient stabiliser so that the structural strength of the material is unaffected and a consistent appearance is maintained. These deep capping’s were cut between floors at 45º to offer an aesthetically pleasing facade around the complete building. The new extension forming the Social Hub is extensively curved on plan and the versatility of the Aluprof MB-SR50N EFEKT easily forms the new three-story facade. Aluprof’s technical team worked closely with BDA Facade consultants to deliver a thermally efficient solution for a complex detail
requirement. The new library now offers an impressive BREEAM Excellent rating. George Green was a 19th century, British mathematical physicist who is known for writing ‘An Essay on the Application of Mathematical Analysis to the Theories of Electricity and Magnetism’, now known as ‘Green's theorem’. Brought up in Sneinton, now part of Nottingham, Green's life story is remarkable in that he was almost entirely selftaught, he received only about one year of formal schooling as a child, between the ages of 8 and 9. The £20.5 million refurbished library offers space for 8,000 linear metres of books and periodicals, has taken almost 3 years to complete and was officially opened by Prince Andrew on the 17th March 2017. Aluprof’s extensive range of systems which include unitised curtain walling, sliding folding doors and a wide range of window systems are increasingly being specified on a variety of residential and commercial projects across the UK. All systems are designed and installed by selected, specially trained companies to ensure each product meets the Aluprof exacting standards. Further information is available on the company website at aluprof. co.uk and specialist advice is available directly from Aluprof UK offices on 0161 941 4005.

Tormax Opens Doors To Learning Working with BSL Interiors of Glasgow, TORMAX was contracted to install an automatic entrance to the Robertson Trust Library and Learning Resource Centre at University of the West of Scotland’s Paisley Campus. Creating an impressive frontage to this important building, a Classic 5251 TORMAX 3-wing revolving door is powered by a precision engineered motor designed at the TORMAX HQ in Switzerland, ensuring reliability and longevity of the system. “This is a sustainable access solution,” comments Simon Roberts, MD for TORMAX. “It has been shown that a revolving door powered by a low-energy operator is one of the most effective ways of minimising heat-loss from a building whilst providing clear and easy access for all users, even at the busiest times of the day.” “The University’s Paisley Campus has been significantly developed over the last decade and UWS was recently shortlisted in the ‘Most Improved Student Experience’ category of the Times Higher Education Awards 2015,” comments Jim Timlin, Project Support Officer at the University. “The new revolving entrance to the Library is energy efficient and crucially is large enough to keep the flow of foot traffic moving.” The TORMAX Classic 5251 revolving door is constructed for durability with 56mm of aluminium edging the profiles. Driven by a technologically advanced high-torque operator, ongoing performance and minimum maintenance is assured, even under heavy daily wear and tear. Whisper-quiet operation combines with user-friendly programmes to allow settings to be adapted to minimise energy consumption. The revolving entrance is fully compliant with current DDA regulations, with advanced sensors adapting rotation speed to match that of users. An existing automatic swing door is located alongside the TORMAX revolving door, offering disabled users alternative access as well as flexibility for larger deliveries. www.tormax.co.uk
Wrightstyle Advanced Systems Complete Prestigious Hong Kong Development Wrightstyle, one of Europe’s leading suppliers of advanced glazing systems, has supplied to a prestigious residential tower block in Hong Kong. The company supplied its SR60 curtain walling system which was constructed into a three-sided glass corridor for the building’s clubhouse rooftop areas. The Skypark development, completed in the last few weeks, is situated in the city’s Mongkok district, one of the most densely-populated areas in Hong Kong. Wrightstyle’s systems form part of the building’s 28th floor clubhouse, called The Aurora, which features social spaces, a gym, bar and swimming pool and, on the floor above, a lawned garden. The clubhouse is completely walled in glass, providing uninterrupted views over the rooftops of Kowloon. Wrightstyle has international accreditations in Europe, the USA and in the Asia-Pacific region – and has undergone stringent fire testing for, for example, the Architectural Services Department (ASD) of the Hong Kong government. In addition, Wrightstyle provided curtain walling for Hong Kong’s Langham Place development, which comprises a 53-storey office tower, a 5-star hotel with 665 bedrooms and rooftop swimming pool as well as a 600,000 sq ft shopping mall with 300 shops. The company’s systems at Langham Place were installed across seven floors, to protect walkways between the main building and the shopping area, an important escape route in the event of fire. For the Skypark project, all mullions and transoms were designed, fabricated and finished at Wrightstyle’s facilities in Wiltshire, with final assembly undertaken by the company’s trained local teams in Hong Kong. www.wrightstyle.co.uk

Feeling Better In Manchester The £65 million Spire Manchester Hospital, located in Didsbury, is a new flagship hospital which is equipped with cutting-edge building technology, including a Levolux solar shading and screening solution. A key consideration for the design team was the sustainability of the scheme. It was important to minimise energy consumption and the CO2 emissions generated by the building. This led to the inclusion of a solar shading solution. Levolux was invited to develop a custom solar shading solution, which comprises a combination of horizontal and vertical Timber Fins and the Infiniti Fin system, applied externally on the outer elevations and within the building’s courtyard area. Timber Fins, engineered from Western Red Cedar, have been used on the project with variations in size, profile and orientation. This type of timber is highly recommended for external applications as the timber is relatively stable and gives a clean and consistent appearance. A central, enclosed courtyard area also required solar shading at high level on its south-facing elevation. Here, Levolux utilised its Infiniti® Fin system to form an array of horizontal, aerofoilshaped Fins formed from extruded aluminium. 19 rows of vertically stacked Fins, each measuring 250mm wide, combine to create a shading structure measuring 6.5 metres in height and almost 16 metres in width. Levolux also provided an attractive plant screening solution to conceal the hospital’s plant and equipment at roof level. The VLS50 Ventilation Louvre system was chosen, featuring specially developed ‘S’ shaped louvres to ensure optimum airflow, weatherability and good looks. All aluminium components, including the Infiniti Fin system and Ventilation Louvres, are finished in an attractive, yet highly durable dark grey powder coating. The horizontal and vertical Timber Fins, all formed from Western Red Cedar, have been left untreated and over time will acquire a cool, silver-grey patina. www.levolux.com
Kalwall® Sheds Light On Education Kalwall® translucent cladding has been extensively used for the impressive refurbishment of the main teaching block at Featherstone High School in Southall, Middlesex. The renovation required removal of the old concrete spandrel panels, repairs to the concrete structure and then over-cladding with Kalwall panels supported on a new steel frame which was added to extend the floor space . The build was completed in two phases over the course of a year while the school continued to operate. The ability to keep the school functioning while the work was completed meant minimum disruption to staff and students. The two fully replaced elevations are a perfect example of how Kalwall can be used for the refurbishment of old and failing cladding and for aged buildings. The new façades allow floor to ceiling diffused and healthy daylight to flood the interior while providing privacy and removing any distractions. An integrated row of clerestory windows provides ventilation and limited views to the outside. Studies show there is a high correlation between daylighting and increased human comfort. Kalwall eliminates all shadows and glare and the stark contrasts of light and shade which not reduces eye fatigue and enhances concentration. The system also enhances simplicity by doing away with the need for blinds, curtains or solar control. Even on cloudy days, the interior is flooded with natural daylight, which means less artificial lighting and, because Kalwall is highly insulating, energy costs are reduced. The standard Kalwall 70mm thick panel offers insulation up to 0.28W/ m2K - equivalent to a cavity filled solid wall. www.structura-uk.com/kalwall GO!PUBLIC : SEPTEMBER 2017

The 10km Underground Journey To Build A New Mersey Bridge
To go over one of the UK's most famous rivers - you must also go underground. Lanes Group has travelled more than 10 kilometres through the drains and sewers of north Cheshire as it has supported the building of Mersey Gateway, the second crossing of the River Mersey. As the construction project's specialist drainage contractor, over a period of 18 months, its teams have carried out remote CCTV surveys of drain and sewer pipes that add up to at least that length. They have also completed dozens of remedial projects on the highway drainage system at both ends of the bridge, including pipe desilting and unblocking, root cutting, patch lining, and full pipe lining. Drainage surveys carried out by the Lanes teams have helped the bridge's civil engineering team make sure highway drains along new access roads are integrated optimally with the wider drainage system. They are also cleaning and surveying each section of new highway drainage as it is being installed. www.lanesfordrains.co.uk

Marmox Multiboards Facilitate Fit Out Of Queenshurst Apartments Work to complete the final phase of a luxury residential development at Kingston-Upon-Thames has included the use of versatile high performance Multiboards from the range of Marmox Limited. The fit out of the bathrooms within the one, two and three bedroom apartments in this third phase to Berkeley Group’s very popular Queenshurst project has been carried out by specialist sub-contractor, South Eastern Carpentry. Its operatives are making use of 6mm thick 1250 x 600mm Multiboards as a robust and moisture-proof tile backer as they complete the bathroom interiors. The Site Manager for South Eastern Carpentry, Kevin Cave, commented: “Here on the Queenshurst building, which is high specification residential, we are fitting the vanity units as well as bath panels and the Multiboard has been brilliant. They are being fitted over 18mm hardwood ply, secured to two-by-two (50 x 50mm) timber framework, ready for tiling by another sub-contractor. The boards are being supplied through CCS, along with the special Marmox washers which make for a very secure fixing.” Marmox Multiboards are manufactured from extruded polystyrene or XPS and offer a range of positive physical characteristics in addition to being fully waterproof. They are both light to handle and easy to cut, while still being able to sustain substantial loadings if required. They further offer good thermal insulation performance, helping to cut condensation risk. Elsewhere the boards have featured in other domestic, commercial and educational projects across the country. They were even used to replace badly deteriorated ceiling panels high above a public swimming pool in Peterborough where ease of installation and resistance to moist aggressive conditions were paramount. www.marmox.co.uk

Pendock Pipe Boxing Solutions Give Rudyard Kipling School That ‘Just So’ Look The encasement solutions produced by Pendock are widely used across the commercial and public sectors – including within schools and education establishments – with the manufacturer’s off-the-shelf and bespoke pipe boxing having been recently employed during a large scale refurbishment contract at a South Coast school. The Rudyard Kipling School, located in Brighton, has been the subject of a year-long contract for locally based SMS Southern Ltd., with Pendock having supplied pipe boxing specified by Brighton and Hove Council. The scope of the scheme was to disguise visually intrusive and potentially hazardous pipework in the school and its washroom spaces, which will also ensure that cleaning is made easier with no place for germs to linger. Equally importantly, the boxing will protect the buildings’ occupants against injury from the hot pipes behind them & also ensure the pipework cannot be tampered with. Pendock, a UK based specialist manufacturer of encasements, including column surrounds, also provided a full site survey and design service for the project, together with installation schedule and drawings. Most fabrications were finished in Pendock’s standard Melamine material, but the manufacturer also provided a more durable laminated finish for the boxing used in the bathroom areas. In total 300 linear metres of boxing was supplied for the contract. www.pendock.co.uk
Keeping the Castle Cosy with Howe Green Access Covers Howe Green’s Light Duty 5000 Series Floor Access Covers are playing their part in keeping a Victorian castle warm and cosy by providing safe and easy access to central heating valves. The Castle has had an interesting past but after falling into a state of disrepair it was closed for 25 years. It reopened in July 2016 following a £19 million refurbishment. The Category A listed building is now a museum and cultural centre owned by the local council. The Light Duty 5000 Series Aluminium Floor Access Covers from Howe Green were specified to provide access to the underfloor services, located in the corridors on the first floor of the Castle. Sixteen covers were supplied, in various standard sizes. The covers were specified with the option of a brass show edge. They were installed by GRAHAM Construction and then infilled with carpet or ceramic tiles, depending on their location. The brass show edge with matching lifting points, which are anchored to the inner frame, give an even higher level of aesthetic appeal than the standard aluminium show edge. The brass finish fits perfectly with the historic surroundings of the Castle. The seamless fit with the floor finish reduces the risk of slips and trips. When maintenance is required to the central heating valves the covers can be removed safely, quickly and easily with the use of lifting keys, keeping disruption to the running of this premier tourist attraction to a minimum.
