Faceted Curtain Walling And More Than 400 Aluminium Windows From Technal For New World Class College In Hartlepool The new £53m Hartlepool College of Further Education features extensive use of architectural aluminium façade systems from Technal. Designed by Bond Bryan Architects and built by Miller Construction, the new state-of-the-art campus brings world class education and training facilities together in an iconic building and is set to make a significant impact on the town of Hartlepool, on both its economy and the local community. The 19,000sqm scheme consists of two blocks linked by a continuous curved atrium space. The central core accommodates shared social facilities and the Learning Core, with classrooms, offices, conferencing suite, restaurant, fitness centre and salons in the north wing and large-scale skills academy spaces in the east wing. Technal’s MX Visible Grid faceted curtain walling provides floor-to-ceiling glazing for the two-storey main entrance elevation and to the rear façade which spans four storeys and encloses the food court and Learning Core. The MX system was also used for the single storey curtain walling to the workshop areas, a full height glazed entrance lobby and three stair towers. The curtain walling is complemented by Technal’s FXi65 high performance aluminium windows. More than 400 units were used as composite systems comprising top hung open-out windows and fixed lights, finished in dark grey and set into contrasting white render. 10
The doors were also supplied by Technal – the CD system was specified in both an automatic sliding configuration for the main entrances and as hinged doors for the fire exits. Commenting on the project, Jeff Hedley, Project Manager at Miller Construction, said, “We were pleased with how the curtain walling came together on site. Both the windows and the curtain walling were easy to install and look very good – and the faceted glazed façade set into black zinc panelling is particularly dramatic.Technal performed very well.” Adam Jones, Associate at Bond Bryan Architects, added, “Natural light was very important on this project. The Technal window system allowed us to achieve a linear effect of continuous glazing. The MX curtain walling system has provided us with a good facet to give the appearance of a curved façade for the front and rear elevations.” Technal’s FXi window suite uses a technically advanced framing system with unobtrusive narrow sight lines. It is available in three module sizes – 46mm, 52mm and 65mm, giving architects and contractors the flexibility to deliver enhanced thermal efficiency and to meet project-specific requirements such as aesthetics, performance, and cost.
MX curtain walling is fully compatible with the FXi window suite, and can be used to create a wide variety of architectural compositions from a single grid system – low to high rise façades, horizontal or vertical emphasis, and ribbon, structural, faceted, beaded and sloped glazing. The multi-million pound National Waterfront Museum in Swansea is one of the top attractions in Wales, taking visitors on a historical journey through the industrial revolution, looking at the impact it had on the nation and its people. SMARTS DELIGHTED WITH ECOBUILD Smart Architectural Aluminium reports that their first year exhibiting at the Ecobuild Exhibition has been a huge success. The sustainable construction show attracted over 60,000 visitors and encouragingly there was a positive atmosphere evident from both visitors and exhibitors throughout the exhibition. DRICON Celebrates 25 Years Of BBA Accreditation Timber is a valuable and versatile building material, but just like concrete or steel, it can be open to the threat of fire. In April 2012, DRICON, Arch Timber Protection’s water-based fire retardant, will celebrate 25 years of continuous British Board of Agrément (BBA) accreditation, giving confidence and reassurance of long-term and safe fire protection to the contractors, designers and most important of all, occupants of buildings and structures that use timber for all or part of their construction. DRICON, which has been used to protect solid timber and timber panels for more than 30 years worldwide, is the only BBA-approved fire retardant protection for timber. As well as BBA accreditation, Arch has classification reports from independent certification organisations for a wide range of species and thicknesses of timber for a number of different end uses, to confirm customers’ confidence in the fire retardant properties. THE WOOD AWARDS 2012 – ENTRIES NOW OPEN! The Wood Awards is once again open for entries for the UK’s premier award scheme for the world’s only naturally sustainable material. The Wood Awards is free to enter, with no administration charge, and entries are now open via the website. This year’s Call for Entries were launched at Ecobuild in March, and the closing deadline is 1st June.

As Britain’s premier architecture and furniture competition celebrating excellence in design and craftsmanship using timber, the aim of the Wood Awards is to recognise, encourage and promote outstanding design, craftsmanship and installation in wood. Over the last nine years since its re-launch, the projects entered in the Wood Awards have ranged from exquisitely designed and executed staircases, furniture and timber frame buildings, to iconic public buildings from the UK’s leading architectural practices. Previous Gold Award winners include the Weald and Downland Museum by Edward Cullinan Architects, Norwich Cathedral Visitors Centre by Hopkins Architects, Pinions Barn by Simon Conder Associates, The Savill Building by Glenn Howells Architects and last year, the Rothschild Foundation, using European oak, by Stephen Marshall Architects. The categories for the Wood Awards have been updated for the 2012 competition with the introduction of ‘Small Project’ as a main category, the renaming of the ‘Conservation / Restoration’ category as ‘Repair & Adaptive Reuse’, and the extension of one ‘Furniture’ category into two: ‘Bespoke Furniture’ and ‘Production Made Furniture’. In separating the small projects from the ‘Private’ category this year with their own ‘Small Project’ category, the Wood Awards has the opportunity to give much smaller projects, from bespoke staircases to garden buildings, the specific recognition they deserve. The category ‘Repair & Adaptive Reuse’ still incorporates both the careful conservation and ingenious restoration seen every year, but intend to encourage entries where the decision to repurpose an existing building has been made over simply moving or rebuilding completely. There will also be a more specific focus on the wood species and timber products used in each project. Commenting on this evolution, chairman of the judges, Michael Morrison of Purcell Miller Tritton, said: “Both judges and sponsors wanted to respond to the interesting challenges the awards often present, and these changes will help give us another fascinating year.” The timber industry’s sustainability and promotion campaign, Wood for Good, has this year become a lead sponsor of the Wood Awards, alongside long standing supporters the American Hardwood Export Council and the Carpenters’ Company. CAB Adds Value by Embracing Social Media and BIM Two of the building sector’s buzz words in 2012, ‘Social media’ and ‘BIM’, were themes running through all the presentations at CAB’s recent mini-conference and Members’ meeting in Bradford. Over 150 members and guests across the supply chain attended the event entitled ‘The Changing Face of Specification’. The unanimous member feedback afterwards was that it had represented one of the best added value meetings that included high quality networking, detailed knowledge and clinical insight that could be taken straight back to the work place and implemented. The first speaker, Su Butcher, Just Practising [www.justpractising. com] urged all CAB members to get online and more importantly to just ‘listen’. With specifiers now embracing what is termed ‘pull marketing’ rather than the traditional ‘push marketing’, the importance of being in the right place at the right time was essential. Together with the move to social media in project specification comes the format for communication of the design of the building structure known as Building Information Modelling (BIM). Although it has been around for 10 years it has gained huge and has gained huge momentum over the last 12 months. Richard Blakesley, Howitt Consulting, together with Nick Allen and James Blood, Metz Architects offered the delegates a fascinating live and interactive view of how BIM works. The importance for CAB members was the need to be able to offer ‘virtual products’ which can be used in BIM design. These ‘virtual products’ contain not only the three dimensional model of the product, but a complete specifcation. This area of design is moving rapidly and Metz Architects are one of a growing number of practices who are now using BIM for all their design work. They acknowledged the particular challenges of interfacing BIM with current software used by CAB members for the design and production of facades, windows and doors. Gilgen Doors Installed At UK’s First ‘Super’ Food Waste Plant Gilgen Door Systems UK Ltd has provided Biffa (Waste Services) Ltd with a total of 25 door systems for the UK’s first `super ’ food anaerobic digestion (AD) plant in Cannock, Staffordshire. Gilgen installed eight high speed doors, seven insulated roller shutter doors, two steel roller shutter doors and eight steel personnel doors together with a bespoke master interface control system at the new facility which opened last year. The high speed and roller shutter doors have been installed in the main tipping hall. The hall features four vehicle lanes which are each fitted with an external roller shutter door for security, a high speed door at the lane entrance for odour control and heat retention and a further internal high speed door installed at the end of each lane giving access to the collection hopper. The doors operate via induction loops set into the concrete floor and are interlinked via a bespoke master interface control system which ensures that only one door opens at a time helping to keep noise, odour and heatloss at a minimum. Each high speed door is fitted with aluminium bottom edge profile making them suitable for high wind loading and an optical safety bottom edge. Wrightstyle supplies to new town project in Hong Kong A UK steel glazing company has supplied to a prestigious HK $500 million (£40.7 million) mixed-use development in Hong Kong. Wrightstyle, the Devizes- based specialist supplier of advanced glazing systems, has supplied a range of internal and external elements for a newly-completed residential and sports centre in the Tseung Kwan O district of the city. The company was specified for the Hang Hau project by the Architectural Services Department (ASD) of the Hong Kong government. The contractor was China State Construction International Holdings Limited, the largest construction contractor in Hong Kong. Tseung Kwan O is one of nine new towns in Hong Kong, with a planned population of some 450,000 people, much of it built on reclaimed land. The Hang Hau centre, due to fully open next month (March), is a key community element for the new town. Wrightstyle supplied various glazed components, including two-hour glass-to-glass internal screens, 60/60 rated internal and external screens, door systems and a large number of non-rated large-span roof-lights.

The company has become internationally-recognised for the design, supply and installation of steel glazing systems to mitigate against the full range of natural or man-made threats, including fire and terrorist attack, or severe wind loading. Wrightstyle has supplied to a number of projects in Hong Kong in recent years, including new educational and health facilities, and carried out site-specific fire testing on behalf of the ASD for a strategic transport interchange between the New Territories and Hong Kong itself. Wrightstyle was also a supplier to the HK $3.1 billion Langham Place development, a milestone in urban renewal in Hong Kong, and which includes a 53-storey office tower, a 5-star hotel with 665 bedrooms and rooftop swimming pool as well as a 600,000 sq ft shopping mall with 300 shops. Underlining the structural performance of its systems, Wrightstyle was also specified for HSBC’s high-security central data centre in Hong Kong, a highly-sensitive hub for the Bank’s operations, and the first data centre in Hong Kong to meet the industry’s most stringent reliability and security requirements. The project had to meet strict criteria for both blast performance and, in a typhoon region, severe wind loading.

The Transformation Of Harpurhey Baths Bathers once flocked to enjoy the waters at Harpurhey Baths, north Manchester, but the Grade 2 listed building, designed by Henry Price, suffered years of decay and was boarded up in 2001.The women’s pool and laundry were incorporated into MANCAT’s sixth form college and community library, and MANCAT later merged with City College to become The Manchester College. Restoration of the first-class male pool included a major upgrade to the roof lantern and a new sprung floor over the pool to create a Theatre and Exhibition Hall. Walker Simpson Architects specified electrically operated blinds to the continuous central roof and CBS installed 16 of their System 8/140 motorised blinds with all the blinds on each elevation operating together as a group. The blinds stack neatly on the cills and run up unobtrusive guide cables to the apex. This was a challenging project for CBS, operating 8 metres above the floor level to fit blinds to a structure over one hundred years old. The System 8/140 blind from CBS is designed for sloping or horizontal glazing and requires no relief rollers or intermediate support which makes it very unobtrusive. Stelrad unveils Radical at EcoBuild 2012 Stelrad Radiators unveiled its brand new Radical radiator on its stand at Ecobuild in March. It’s the first ‘serial feed’ radiator on the UK market place and the first to come with an integrated thermostatic valve insert. Standard radiators are ‘parallel feed’, where the water enters the radiator and is fed via a ‘T’ piece to enter both panels at the same time and the same rate. A serial feed radiator allows the water to enter via a centre tap connection, directing the water flow into the front panel first before, after circulating around the front panel, the water eventually makes its way from the front panel into the back panel. Because the front panel of a Radical heats up first, there’s a higher average temperature in the front panel than you get from a standard radiator and less heat is lost from the back panel. LUMIRA AEROGEL INSULATES SWIMMERS The William Penn Leisure Centre at Rickmansworth, home to Beaumonts Health Club, includes a 25m swimming pool. Designed by Atkins Architects, the brief for this state-of the art design was to maximise interior daylight while maximising thermal insulation. The solution was to introduce Lumira aerogel (previously called Nanogel) inside the full height Kalwall at the end of the pool. Lumira aerogel is the world’s lightest and most insulating solid. Within the Kalwall panel a ‘U’ value of 0.28W/m²K can be achieved. This is equivalent to a solid wall and is probably the best insulating performance of any translucent system. A particular benefit for swimming pools is that the diffused daylight eliminates glare and veiling on the water which means that lifeguards can see underwater swimmers better. Kalwall + Lumira means that architects can now design large insulated areas of daylighting in walls and roofs while minimising energy loss and reducing running costs. Currently, one of the largest UK applications is the 2780sqm of insulated Kalwall being installed at St George’s Park, the Football Association’s new National Football Centre, designed by the architects Red Box Design Group. NEW ACOUSTIC TILES LAUNCHED Troldtekt, the Danish manufacturer of acoustic wall and ceiling tiles, has launched its environmentally-friendly and aesthetically pleasing products in the UK. The tiles are made of natural wood fibres mixed with cement to create wood wool. The main benefits are high sound absorption, resistance to fire and humidity, high durability, natural breathability and low cost life cycle performance. JS AIR CURTAINS TOP THE BILL AT BFI IMAX The aesthetic design and controllability of the Rund air curtain from JS Air Curtains makes it top of the bill at the BFI IMAX cinema, London, whose reception and café were suffering from cold draughts at peak visitor times. Because of the location of the BFI IMAX in Waterloo, its main entrance is directly opposite a subway tunnel that funnels the wind straight off The Thames corridor into its reception area and café. At show times, up to 500 visitors are arriving and leaving during a short time period and the doors are constantly open with the consequence of cold air pouring into the building. BFI IMAX facilities manager, Duncan McKeich, believed air curtains would solve the problem but he had three key criteria to meet. The air curtains had to be vertically mounted and aesthetically pleasing, as there was little roof space for concealed horizontal units. They also had to have flexibility of control so they could be quickly turned up to combat the cold at busy visitor times. The JS Rund air curtains met these criteria and two 2.5m electrically heated units have been installed vertically, one at either side of the entrance doors, forming a barrier against the cold outside air. Tesco superstore shoppers stay safe and cool with SE Controls An integrated smoke and natural ventilation solution from SE Controls is helping ensure that Tesco’s recently completed Walkden superstore in Manchester maintains a safe and comfortable environment for shoppers and staff. Working to the smoke control strategy defined by consulting engineers Van Zyl & de Villiers, the store’s epansive glazed atrium was separated into three individual smoke and natural ventilation zones to not only provide the specified smoke extraction capacity, but also enable more accurate temperature control. In normal day-to-day ventilation mode, the natural ventilation system constantly monitors the temperature in each zone, on both the ground floor and mezzanine level, with the average reading from separate sensors being used to signal the actuation of the atrium vents. When triggered, the vents initially open by 10% of their full capacity and continue to open in 10% increments up to a maximum of 50% if the temperature rise is maintained, before closing using the same incremental approach until the temperature reduces to 21OC, when the atrium vents are fully closed. The SE Controls system also enables the operating algorithms and set points to be changed or fine tuned to meet specific conditions, if necessary, as well as allowing night purging to cool the building’s thermal mass, where the vents open 30 degrees. The SE Controls’ solution also monitors weather conditions to ensure that in rain or high winds, the vents are automatically closed to stop the ingress of water and limit any possible damage. Each smoke and natural ventilation zone uses a dedicated control panel, which is triggered by the fire alarm system in the event of a fire, causing the atrium vents to open fully, allowing smoke to be vented from the building and ensure escape routes are kept clear. In smoke ventilation mode the vents open to 87 degrees and are hinged on opposing sides to provide optimum operation and maintain safety even in high wind conditions. Smoke ventilation and control is a key issue and is the subject of a seminar organised by the Smoke Control Association (SCA), where SE Controls’ Managing Director,Will Perkins, will be presenting on natural smoke ventilation technologies as one of the event’s main speakers. NIBE Exhaust Air System Heats Hollies Hollies is a large Redrow Development in a rural setting that justifies the name at Hartford near Northwich. Six flats within the site are owned by Muir Housing Association, a leading social landlord in the North of England.The site does credit to both companies’ reputation for sympathetic design which includes six two bedroomed shared ownership apartments each with its own kitchen area and bathroom. One of the many attractive features of the development is that the water heating and radiator fed central heating for each apartment comes from an innovative Exhaust Air Heat Pump powered by a F205 heat pump supplied by NIBE Energy Systems and installed by MB Heating of Wigan. Exhaust Air heating really is like grabbing energy out of thin air for the system is based on harnessing the heat already created by family living, then recycling its energy before it is expelled into the outside atmosphere in the course of normal ventilation. In Hollies Farm, ventilation input is from vents situated in the diningand bedroom walls and the warmed air is subsequently gathered at ceiling height in the kitchen and bathroom. The energy then passes to the F205 unit, one of NIBE’s new generation of heat pumps, where it is treated to a highly sophisticated heat exchange process that greatly increases the temperature by compression before passing the energy through to heat the water stored in the super insulated stainless steel cylinder incorporated in the unit. So efficient is the heat extraction process that the exhaust air is eventually expelled at a temperature close to freezing point, with the beneficial side effect of cutting emissions of carbon and noxious gases to a very minimum. Timoleon Provides The Basics For Bicton College's 'EaRTH Centre' Bicton College, set in rural Devon yet within 20 minutes of the centre of Exeter, is one of the country's foremost land-based educational establishments. Centred in a lovely Georgian manor house overlooking a landscaped park and lake, the College boasts the very latest in facilities and equipment linked to a forward looking attitude to all aspects of agriculture and allied subjects. Their latest project is the establishment of the Environmental and Rural Technologies Hub (EaRTH), a training and conference facility demonstrating all aspects of renewable energy generation and sustainable building methods. While suitable courses are already being designed for the college's students, the further aim is to educate the wider community in 'green' methods, especially through school visits. It is expected that around 10,000 visitors will pass through the EaRTH's doors every year. The EaRTH centre, carbon neutral needless to say, has been created around two underused farm buildings on Home Farm, which is part of Bicton College. Equally naturally only renewable energy is being harnessed to provide heating and hot water for the centre and, since the comparatively low operating temperature of underfloor heating is ideal for use with renewable energy, the design team decided on the Timoleon Staple System to supply below floor warmth evenly throughout the two buildings. The Timoleon Staple System is simple and can be rapidly laid even in awkward areas as Fords of Sidmouth the local firm used for this installation, will agree. When in use, heat from the pipes is reflected upwards from the insulation sheet, optimising warmth for the room above. The Timoleon system has a surprising double life as a Surface Cooling System, a far more energy efficient alternative to air conditioning. EaRTH's buildings offer a comfortably cool atmosphere even in the hottest of summer months. When the outside atmosphere demands it, Timoleon's

sophisticated controls switch the system from heating to cooling modes. In cooling mode, cool water is circulated through the heating pipes. In this way the 'heating system' cools by absorbing radiant energy instead of emitting it.While air conditioning requires large volumes of cooled air to replace the hot air,Timoleon's Surface Cooling absorbs the sun's radiant energy before the air in the room has the chance to become unpleasantly warm. EaRTH is so well insulated and the Timoleon system so efficient, that the energy absorbed in the building is simply dissipated by a loop of 1,300 metres of polybutylene pipe in damp sand beneath the subfloor, which is well isolated from the heated area. In this way the building is cooled without the need for any refrigeration equipment. POTATOES STAY COOL WITH KINGSPAN POWERPANEL The owners of Lavenham Fen Farm in Cambridgeshire have installed the Kingspan’s Roof PowerPanel Modules to slash bills from the farm’s two potato storage buildings. The buildings, separately housing standard and organic potatoes, require large amounts of energy to power internal cooling systems, keeping harvested potatoes at a constant low temperature. With electricity usage metered at half-hourly rates, this previously resulted in massive energy bills for the farm owners. Avoid going adrift on a raft When site conditions dictate the use of raft construction, the builder faces a dilemma of how to bring together conflicting design aspects. In instances where there is a timber separating wall, the illustrated arrangement incorporates measures to resist the passage of sound. One method is to form a channel cast/formed into the raft. Its purpose is to act as an emergency canal. Arresting and channelling water in the middle of a wall means that water has to saturate whatever is in its path to get to that position. At Cavity Trays of Yeovil various party wall / separating wall barriers are available to provide mid-wall water arrestment. Because each barrier can rise substantially upwardly (rather than channel downwardly into the raft) it can withhold a greater extent of water. The upward-rising barrier introduces compatibility to what can otherwise be conflicting construction requirements. The New Innovative Lightweight Interlocking Roof Tile - Envirotile The demand for sustainable building products worldwide continues to grow. Remmers Drive The Corrosion Away At Eastgate Car Park Eastgate Shopping Centre in Inverness now houses a car park with 1350 spaces. CCCP were the on-site consultant engineers who tested the car park structure for levels of chlorides in the concrete. From their findings, they created the full project specification which recommended the use of Remmers MCI and Remmers Betofix concrete repair systems. Essential works were then carried out to protect the embedded steel reinforcement. Finally a bonding bridge was applied and a new fibre reinforced slab was laid to protect the concrete from any further damage. Arch Timber Protection’s KEYWOOD Treated Pine Specified for Decking Around Swimming Pond for Zero Carbon House Arch Timber Protection’s KEYWOOD treated pine has been chosen by landscape designer Alistair W Baldwin to be part of a site landscaping project on the grounds of a zero carbon house near Harrogate, North Yorkshire. The project uses the durable timber in decking around a swimming pond installed by Garden Style of Sheffield. KEYWOOD is a modified softwood created by treating FSCcertified Radiata pine with a biomass-based thermosetting resin. This makes the timber more durable and usable indoors and outdoors without the need for a coating, and its attractive light color blends with all surroundings. Product Manager Denis Boissau said: “The homeowner worked hard to create a zero carbon house, and we were able to support this sustainable focus by providing the KEYWOOD treatment, which involves a biomass-derived resin that does not require further chemical treatments for outdoor use, even near water.” Designer Alistair W Baldwin said: “The KEYWOOD product is based on pine, so it is easy to work with, but it has the look of a more exotic hardwood. As a designer, I am very attracted to its pale coloring when dry and its rich warm tones when wet. NEW CLINIC OPENS IN EAST YORKSHIRE – CONSTRUCTED USING A HIGHLY SUSTAINABLE RECYCLED MODULAR BUILDING A new health centre has opened in the East Riding of Yorkshire, constructed using a highly sustainable recycled modular building from Foremans Relocatable Building Systems. Designed by architects Gelder and Kitchen, the new purposedesigned centre was craned into position in just eight hours over a weekend. The single storey building has been clad in brickwork to complement its location in the historic village of Cottingham – a conservation area. The new centre has brought a range of community services under one roof again. All Foremans’ recycled modular buildings are fully refurbished with new windows, wall linings, partitions, M&E services, doors, flooring, and cladding, to create high quality accommodation for a wide variety of permanent and interim applications. The recycling and refurbishment of relocatable buildings is also highly sustainable, helping to improve a building’s carbon footprint. The approach produces less than 10 per cent of the carbon emissions compared to a newly manufactured building (source: MPBA). Because much of the refurbishment work takes place off site, the approach generates fewer vehicle movements to site than traditional building methods, reducing congestion and carbon emissions. YORKON AWARDED OFF-SITE CONSTRUCTION CONTRACT FOR NEW ACADEMY BUILDING IN BIRMINGHAM Yorkon, has been awarded a sub-contract package to provide a two-storey modular classroom building for principal contractor Thomas Vale Construction and Ninestiles School – a new high achieving academy in Birmingham. This challenging project which is being completed by Thomas Vale has to be delivered in a tight timescale in order to meet funding requirements and will be built in a completely enclosed courtyard in the centre of the school. The architects and project managers are Ridge & Partners. Yorkon’s sub-contract will involve the use of a large 350-tonne crane to lift the steel-framed modules over the existing school and into the courtyard. By working in partnership with the project team, this operation has been programmed for the half term holiday to minimise any disruption to teaching. The overall scheme will accommodate six classrooms to help the school meet the increased demand for places and to replace an outdated facility. Design features will include brick cladding to the ground floor with a contrasting white finish to the upper floor; windows, doors and aluminium cladding panels in anthracite grey; canopies above each set of entrance doors; a full height glazed stairwell, and a glazed link corridor to the main school building. OPINION|FIRE PROTECTION TWO-WIRED FIRE PROTECTION Alan Locke, Head of UK and Export Sales
In this price sensitive market, it is so important to choose a fire protection system that combines reliability and versatility with economy. Alan Locke of Fike Safety Technology provides some useful guidelines. A common assumption among specifiers and even some contractors is that fire protection systems are divided into two major groups – conventional and addressable. With conventional systems, a simple control panel is used, and the fire detectors are connected to this via one or more circuits, depending on the size and complexity of the installation. Separate circuits are used to connect the sounders and beacons to the control panel. Conventional systems are usually assumed to be the most suitable and most cost-effective option for small to medium-sized applications, such as small apartment blocks and houses of multiple occupation. This assumption is often incorrect, however, as we shall see shortly. Addressable systems are considerably more complex. They

use detectors that send digital data over the circuit to the control panel, which means that they can provide detailed information about the location of the fire. This is a crucial benefit in a large installation like an office block or a major retail site, but much less important in small installations where the site of the fire will either be readily apparent or easy to locate. Generally speaking, addressable systems are an unnecessarily complex and expensive choice for smaller installations. It would seem therefore, that for small and medium-sized installations, conventional systems are the way to go. However, there is a third option, which is all too often overlooked. This is the two-wire or bi-wire system. The components for two-wire fire alarm systems cost only a little more than those for conventional systems, but there are big savings to be made on installation costs. Two-wire systems use simple inexpensive cabling and the detectors, manual call points, sounders and beacons all share the same cable.
The result is that the overall cost of a two-wire installation is almost invariably lower than that of a conventional system for the same application. Additionally, depending on the equipment chosen, the two-wire system is likely to offer valuable increased functionality. For specifiers, installers and end users alike, therefore, two-wire systems are a very attractive option. But what can be expected of a two-wire system? First of all, control panels are typically available with two, four or eight zones. A fourzone panel is a good choice, for example, in an apartment block with three apartments, since each apartment can have its own zone, while the fourth zone is allocated to the hallways, stairways and other common areas. Clearly, an eight-zone panel would be used for a similar property with up to seven apartments. While it won’t show which individual detector has been operated, this arrangement will show in which apartment the actuation has taken place and, in some systems, it will also show whether

the actuation originates from an automatic detector or a manual call point. Advanced twowire systems can go even further by offering the option to respond differently to signals from alarm devices based on their type and location. For example, in our apartment block, consider the benefits of the following set-up option; a fire signal from a manual call point or automatic detector in a common area can be arranged to instantly trigger sounders and beacons throughout the entire premises, whereas a fire signal from an automatic detector in one of the apartments can be arranged to initially trigger the sounders and beacons in that apartment only. If, however, the fire signal from the apartment persists for, say, one minute, the alarm is raised throughout the premises.
This arrangement is useful as a fire signal from a single apartment may well mean nothing more than someone has burnt their toast, in which case raising a general alarm is unnecessary and disruptive. This complies fully with Part 1 and Part 6 of British Standard BS5839. It’s also worth noting that the detectors used in two-wire systems are by no means all the same. The most useful are types with both smoke and heat sensors. In most instances, a combination of heat and smoke detection will give the optimum balance between fast response to a real fire and freedom from false alarms. However, there are locations where it is preferable to reduce the influence or even disable one or other of the detection functions, and good detectors will allow the installer to do this.

One of the largest UK applications of Wicona’s Wictec 50 aluminium roof glazing system has been completed at the new £53m Hartlepool College of Further Education. This striking college campus was designed by Bond Bryan Architects and built by Miller Construction. The scheme comprises two blocks which are linked by a full height atrium created with Wicona roof glazing and forming the main entrance and circulation space. The central atrium has a complex fan-shaped roof which uses faceted glazing that radiates outwards and follows the curve of the building. The roof glazing system is sufficiently robust to carry large unsupported spans of glass up to 2.3m wide – 6mm solar control toughened glass for the outer pane with up to 8.8mm clear laminated inner panes. Two mono-pitch glazed roofs with a 15° incline were specified for the north and east wings, with automated roof lights to the vertical areas to provide natural ventilation when needed. Commenting on the roof glazing, Bobby Simpson, Façade and Cladding Inspector at Miller Construction, said, “The Wicona roof glazing is well designed with effective drainage, and is a dry system so it is not affected by poor weather conditions during installation – a bonus for UK installation.” “We used the system for the Hartlepool project, and have been very pleased with the results. It came together well on site, was user friendly, and simple to install – all key considerations for our project teams. The installation phase went well, and the system has achieved an impressive faceted roof design that provides a dramatic top to a central atrium as well as some large areas of sloped glazing.” Adam Jones, Associate at Bond Bryan Architects, said, “The roof glazing on this project is extremely effective. The fabrication was to a high standard and the fanned effect above the central core provides a powerful feature, bringing a lovely quality of light into the space.” The new Hartlepool College of Further Education provides workshops and technical training centres for building services, aerospace, construction, mechanical and electrical engineering and motor vehicles. Other facilities include high quality conference facilities, a fitness suite, restaurant, and hair and beauty salons which are accessible to the public. UNIVERSITY OF READING GETS NEW MUSIC DEPARTMENT Originally owned by the Palmer family, of Huntley & Palmers biscuit fame, the land and buildings at Reading’s London Road were gifted to the University of Reading at the turn of the twentieth century. The focal point of the property is the magnificent Victorian cloistered Great Hall set within landscaped grounds, providing the perfect setting for student Graduation ceremonies and live performances by national choirs and orchestras. Reduced use over the last few years has seen a deterioration in the Cloister buildings. Since the injection of a £21m budget, these buildings have been refurbished to create a new home for the University’s Institute of Education, with dedicated spaces for the teaching of subjects such as Music, Drama, Languages and The Institute of Education’s unique programme in Theatre Arts, Education and Deaf Studies (TAEDS). It was important to retain many of the Cloister buildings’ original features, including a mixture of curved and sash windows, all of which were single-glazed. This presented a particular problem for the 2-storey Music Department which accommodates a mixture of studios, practice rooms and recording facilities and enhanced levels of soundproofing for both noise egress and ingress were essential. Main Contractor, Wates Construction, consulted secondary glazing specialist Selectaglaze Ltd. who have significant experience in dealing with acoustic problems and had previously worked with Wates on a major sound insulation scheme for the Symphony Hall at Birmingham Town Hall. The windows have been treated with hinged casements incorporating twin memory compression seals, multipoint locking and a 6.4mm laminated glass to

ensure the best acoustic performance. Flush hinges and flush locks fitted with escutcheon plates provide clean lines and minimal dust ledges. The installation has also markedly reduced drafts and general heat loss through the window ensuring comfortable conditions for practicing musicians. Typically, single glazed windows reduce noise by just 25-30dB, less if they are ill fitting and laboratory tests show that Selectaglaze secondary glazing can improve this to approximately 40-45dB depending on the distance between the glass. As can be seen at the University of Reading, purpose designed secondary glazing can be unobtrusive and sympathetic to the character of a building, whilst still allowing full access to the windows. Factory assembly allows installation to be rapidly completed with minimal disruption to the building’s occupants. As well as its acoustic advantage, secondary glazing raises the thermal efficiency of the window and improves security. FIKE TWINFLEX FIRE PROTECTION SAVES LIVES IN BLACKPOOL Just three days after it was installed and commissioned, a Fike Twinflex fire alarm system in a Blackpool apartment block provided early warning of a fire, giving time for the building to be evacuated and the fire successfully extinguished without harm to the occupants of the premises. Had the fire occurred before the new alarm system was fitted, the occupants, who included small children, would have been put at serious risk of injury or even death.

At the Blackpool apartment block, DD Fire Alarms completed the installation of the Twinflex system on a Friday evening and on the following Monday the system was actuated by a fire in one of the apartments.
The alarm system was designed and installed by Blackpool based DD Fire Alarms, a company with specialist expertise and experience in providing dependable and cost effective alarm systems for houses of multiple occupation (HMOs) and hotels. Initially, DD Fire Alarms was called in to refurbish the existing fire alarm installation at the apartment block, but after examining it the company determined that it would be difficult and costly to repair and also that, even if it was brought back into full working order, it would not meet current regulatory requirements. DD Fire Alarms therefore proposed that a completely new fire alarm system, based on Fike Twinflex products, should be installed.The landlord of the apartment block, mindful of the need to safeguard his tenants and his property, agreed to proceed on this basis.
On entering this apartment, the other residents of the building found that the occupant had set fire to a duvet and, in an unsuccessful attempt to smother the fire, had rolled the duvet up. This made it difficult to tackle the fire with a conventional handheld extinguisher. The fire brigade had, however, been summoned and on arrival were able to deal with the problem quickly. Because the Twinflex system had detected the fire and sounded the alarm so promptly, damage was minor and was restricted to the apartment where the fire had occurred, and the occupant suffered no lasting ill effects.
“The Twinflex system was ideal for this application,” said Darren Johnson, Managing Director of DD Fire Alarms, “as it is exceptionally reliable and is also fast and easy to install, since it is a two-wire system. This means that the sounders and beacons are combined with the detectors on the same circuit, which reduces the amount of wiring required. In fact, it is our experience that the cost savings we are able to make on installations by using Twinflex two-wire technology mean that it is invariably the most competitive option.” A further attraction of Twinflex for this application was that the detectors, beacons and sounders are centrally powered – there are no batteries to replace.This is particularly important in HMOs, as DD Fire Alarms has found that when battery-powered devices start to beep intermittently to indicate that a new battery is needed many tenants simply disable or damage the devices rather than fit a new battery. This leaves the tenants with no fire protection, and the problem may remain undiscovered for many months until the next routine fire system inspection.
Had the new fire alarm system not been in place, it is likely that the occupant of apartment would have been overcome by smoke, and that the fire would have taken hold and spread through the building. There would then have been a significant risk to the lives of the other tenants, some of whom had young children who would have been particularly susceptible to smoke and heat. Costly damage to the property itself would also have been inevitable. As a result of this incident, the fire brigade carried out an investigation that included an evaluation of the new Twinflex alarm system. They confirmed that this had played a major role in limiting the impact of the fire, that it fully met current legislative requirements, and that it was ideally suited to providing effective and dependable protection in HMOs. www.fike.com/corporate/subukfst.asp# Enquiry No 75
The Twinflex two-wire system also has a built-in alarm confirmation delay feature that is particularly useful in HMOs. This is typically configured so that fire signals from the common areas or from manual call points immediately sound the alarms throughout the premises. Only if the fire signal from the apartment persists for more than a minute are the alarms sounded throughout the building.

Holmfirth Vineyard, near Huddersfield,West Yorkshire, now has a new winery, courtesy of Premier Steel Buildings, located in Fife, Scotland, a Capital Steel Buildings distributor, and installer Ian Wilkinson, of Weathervane Roofing & Building, of Dronfield, Derbyshire. The winery incorporates over 250 square metres of Steadmans’ AS35 insulated steel cladding finished in olive green - 80mm thick panels on the roof and 60mm panels in its walls. Arch Goes Back To School Arch Timber Protection is back at school, this time protecting the children and staff at the new-build Highfields and Penn Fields School, in Penn in Wolverhampton. The timber cladding on the outside of the school has been treated with NONCOM Exterior fire retardant, which defends the new campus against fire without affecting the look and strength of the wood. The cladding uses 80m3 of Siberian larch, and has been chosen by the architect to be a feature of the new project. NON-COM Exterior uses an approved leach-resistant, polymer-based formulation and is applied by vacuum-pressure impregnation, ensuring a long term built-in fire protection. The battens supporting the cladding were also NONCOM Exterior treated to provide a complete fire retardant protection. Whitmore's Timber sales director Ian Thomson said: “The Siberian larch on the building looks great and will be longlasting. The architect for the project recommended that we use NON-COM Exterior to protect the timber used in this large-scale project.” The site, which combines Highfields Science Specialist School and Penn Fields Special School, is due to open in September 2012. Unique and Sustainable Paving System for WS Atkins
In 2010, St Mary’s Church in March had been the victim of an arson attack which gutted the building. When specifying for the first stage of the £550,000 restoration, that of the roof, windows and stonework, architect Shona McKay of Archimage Architects chose Klober Permo Air air-open roofing underlay. Unlike vapour permeable underlays, Permo air can be used without supporting high level ventilation being the most breathable low resistance underlay currently available. Logwise In The Great Outdoors Logwise have designed and built nine new buildings for the Danbury and East Mersea centres of Essex Outdoors, providers of high quality outdoor learning opportunities for young people. Comprising five small residential units, a classroom, catering unit, large multi-occupancy residential unit and toilet and shower block, the log buildings were designed at the Logwise design centre in Devon, utilising laminated spruce logs of 88mm thickness. The buildings were actually timber frame in construction with the logs acting as an external cladding material. Triple glazed doors and windows were also supplied by Honka to complete the package. Construction of the log kits was undertaken by Finnish contractors employed by Logwise and with around 4,000 logs in total, it was quite a task! The Toilet and Shower block was the final building to be completed in February of this year. The project was overseen by Cadman Construction Ltd from Colchester as main contractors. Sika In Comedy Carpet Roll Out Self compacting concrete containing Sika admixtures played an important role in the production of Comedy Carpet, a brand new £2.6 million attraction, located on the Tower Headland at the foot of Blackpool Tower. The 2,200 square metre concrete artwork, which was commissioned by Blackpool Council, features gags, catchphrases and names of more than 1,000 comedians. Comprising 235 cast concrete panels, the piece by Gordon Young, a visual artist who focuses on creating art for the public domain, with typography by Why Not Associates, includes over 160,000 letters cut from solid red and black granite and specially created cobalt blue concrete. The 30mm deep letters were cast into high quality concrete panels. The letters were laid out in a mould, upside down and back to front, and cast in a white, hardwearing grout to form the visual layer when completed and turned over. A reinforced concrete base layer was then added. To avoid disturbing the mosaic of letters, it was necessary for this base layer to be cast without added vibration to consolidate the concrete. To achieve this, self compacting concrete supplied by Robin Concrete was chosen. This concrete mix, containing specially adapted Sika® ViscoCrete® superplasticisers, produces unique fluidity and inherent compactibility. Once completed and laid in place on the headland, the carpet was ground, polished and sealed. Concrete admixture, Sika® Control 40 was also contained in the mix to greatly reduce any shrinkage during curing of the concrete. Comedy Carpet is one of the largest and most ambitious pieces of public art ever commissioned in the UK. It has taken five years to complete and is part of the larger Festival Headland overhaul, a new events area in the resort. SIKA DELIVERS COMPLETE FLOORING SYSTEM AT GLOBAL RETAILER’S DISTRIBUTION CENTRE A new distribution centre covering 1,000,000 square feet, equivalent to 14 football pitches, has been built in Scotland for one of the world’s largest online retailers. With the floors to be subjected to footfall and forklift movements 24 hours a day, a proven and hard wearing flooring system was required. Offering market leading durability, the Sikafloor-2 SynTop from Sika fitted the bill perfectly. Main contractor Winvic was appointed to complete delivery of the new-build single storey warehouse during a 42 week construction programme. To complete the comprehensive 80,000m2 flooring application, the company turned to specialists in the design and construction of industrial floors, ABS Brymar. Appointed to install a hard-wearing and attractive flooring system, ABS Brymar wanted a system proven to deliver on both fronts. The company turned to the reliability, durability and high performance of the Sikafloor-2 SynTop system from global building product manufacturer, Sika. Sikafloor-2 SynTop is a one part, pre-blended, coloured synthetic dry shake hardener for concrete comprising of cement, hard aggregates, compatible admixtures and pigment. It provides a hard wearing, non-metallic dry shake topping for monolithic floors.

When sprinkled and trowelled into fresh wet concrete floors, it forms a durable and smooth surface – ideal for warehouses, distribution centres, factories, manufacturing plants and aircraft hangars, as well as many more commercial and industrial facilities of all sizes. The system was applied in its natural colouring of concrete grey. The system is available in other colours to provide a more decorative finish as required In addition to the internal floor finish, a Sika concrete admixture was also chosen, incorporated into the concrete mixes for the external and internal floor slabs – both subject to high traffic loads. SikaPlast 15RM, a liquid admixture that is used as a mid-range water reducer and plasticiser, was added to the mix to increase the workability of the concrete whilst at the same time increasing durability and strength. It proved to be a cost efficient solution and meets the requirements of BS EN934-2 HRWRA/Superplasticiser. To complete the flooring application, ABS Brymar applied the Sikafloor Proseal onecoat concrete curing membrane. A clear acrylic resin polymer solution, Sikafloor ProSeal impregnates the concrete surface in a single application to cure, harden and seal freshlyapplied or hardened concrete. Fully cured within 24 hours at 20°C, it minimises downtime and ensures the floor is fully trafficable within days. Now complete and fully functional, the distribution centre was officially opened in November 2011 – in time for the busy Christmas trading period. EXTENDING THE SERVICE LIFE OF STEEL WINDOWS Certain attributes of steel window frames – such as strength, security and the slenderness of section sightlines – are accepted by virtually everyone concerned with the construction industry, yet many specifiers and building owners do not understand the extent to which the performance and longevity of even early models can be stretched by specialists in steel window refurbishment and repair. As well as the installation of new, high performance W20 and W40 frames, complete with IG units able to meet the requirements of Part L to the Building Regulations, members of the Steel Window Association offer a comprehensive remedial service that encompasses many levels of intervention, from adjustment and aesthetic repair, through to full overhaul back in the factory. What approach is taken will vary according to factors such as the building’s level of exposure, whether it is listed and the overall cost compared to outright replacement. In respect of the latter course of action, the SWA would normally recommend a like-forlike approach in order to preserve the property’s architectural integrity. SWA members have the experience and the resources to address different problems with steel and the earliest wrought iron frames, whilst respecting the surrounding building fabric and all the legislative requirements, including health & safety. Pre-war steel windows did not benefit from the protection of factory applied hot dip galvanising, and have, unless meticulously maintained, suffered from varying degrees of corrosion. In turn, the expansive nature of iron oxide can crack the glass, or even cause spalling of the window reveal. Dealing with the problem in-situ, the contractor will
normally employ a variety of hand and power tools to remove all visible signs of rusting, getting back to clean metal before applying one of the specialist coatings now available to prevent future corrosion. It may be the case that the work reveals some frame areas, where water has collected, have been almost completely ‘eaten away’ and more radical treatment is required. A skilled operative will be able to cut out the affected section with a disc-cutter or hacksaw and weld in a matching section of metalwork, before completing its concealment. It may also be necessary to straighten out twists that have occurred due to structural or thermal movement. Misalignment between coupled, multilight windows can be similarly rectified. Redecorating the repaired window can be achieved using either brush applied or sprayed paint systems, including suitable primers and undercoats, with proven products on the market now being able to achieve greatly extended maintenance cycles. As well as the steel frames themselves, the window’s ‘ironmongery’ is almost certain to require some attention. This could include easing, adjusting and lubricating or replacing the hinges. Likewise the window stays and handles can be cleaned up, repaired, adjusted and redecorated. Then depending on the location of a building or window, and therefore its perceived vulnerability to burglary, the client may wish to have improved or additional locks fitted. Again in heritage situations, SWA members have access to ranges of replica handles and other furniture. It may be deemed necessary or desirable to replace or add new weather-seals where the opening lights close against the main frame. Depending on the age and type of the frame, the glass or glazing unit might be retained by lead cames, putty, sealants or some sort of bead; all of which may be removed and replaced. Where heritage demands it contractors can source new sections of so called crown glass with its characteristic distortions. Alternatively, later windows can have single glazing replaced with some of the slimmer double glazed units – incorporating low-E glass and gas filling – to drastically cut the centre pane U-value. www.steel-window-association.co.uk Enquiry No 85

Bespoke VMZINC For London’s Wallace Collection The Wallace Collection is a national museum housing 25 galleries of French 18th century paintings, furniture and porcelain, a world class armoury and one of London's most important Rococo collections. Working with John O’Connell Architects and Purcell Miller Tritton a new roof over the east galleries has provided the opportunity to return ceilings to their former classical design, elegancy and glory. VMZINC supplied cast zinc bullseye dormer windows which were designed to enhance the classical appearance of the roof and to accommodate ventilation outlets. A pre-weathered Quartz-zinc® standing seam covering was also selected to break up the surface of the upper slopes. Skylights were fitted at the ridge and above a traditional slate Mansard roof with lightwell projections also clad in zinc to provide an unobtrusive blend within the roofscape. There was historical precedent for using zinc and Quartz-zinc was chosen for its traditional, lasting appearance and muted grey colour which is similar to that of leadwork. It blends well with natural slate and a variety of other building materials, particularly brick and stone, a factor which has led to its widespread use throughout Europe. Zinc’s malleability was ideal for the intricate bullseye dormer detailing while the low maintenance, long life expectancy and overall sustainability were also major factors influencing material selection. www.vmzinc.co.uk Enquiry No 86

Sika-Trocal Integral To State-Of-The-Art Blackwall Tunnel Ventilation System The four futuristic ventilation shafts on London’s Blackwall Tunnel would not be out of place on the set of the upcoming James Bond film. Forming part of Transport for London (TfL)’s three-year refurbishment of this vital link across the Thames, Sika-Trocal single ply membrane was specified for its versatility and long term waterproofing performance in the much needed upgrade of the 114 year old tunnel and its unusual ‘flying saucer’ ventilation domes. Faced with the challenges of designing and installing a waterproofing system for a domed roof that features opening mechanical petals, Architects Acanthus LW worked with specialist contractor Robertson Roofing, to come up with an innovative solution for this unusual single ply membrane application. Main contractor BAM Nuttall was awarded the contract from TfL for the refurbishment of the northbound carriageway which involved a complete upgrade of the tunnel’s emergency walkways and systems. As part of the project, new ventilation equipment is being installed, fire and life safety systems upgraded and a state-of-the-art communications systems incorporated, including high quality lighting, CCTV surveillance, radio-interrupt systems and variable message signs to convey quick appropriate information to tunnel users. Appearing at ground level as raised concrete domes, a distinctive feature of the ventilation domes are the curved ‘petal’ sections which presented their own challenges for Robertson’s installation team. The area build-up to the domes comprised a plywood deck shaped to form a dome profile over the lower perimeter area and the eight individual vent petals. Onto the plywood, the team installed a layer of Sika-Trocal S-felt type A protection fleece which was mechanically fixed using Sika-Trocal laminated metal discs. This was followed by a layer of Sika-Trocal Type S 1.5mm thick light grey membrane bonded to the Sika-Trocal laminated metal discs. The Sika-Trocal type S membrane was installed in a manner to ensure the layout of flaps gave the best aesthetic appearance to the finished roof. The domed roof shape also required Sika-Trocal laminated metal detailing to follow

the curved line of perimeter gutters and vent segments. In addition the installation team were required to create and install a Sika-Trocal secret gutter around the base of the vent petals and a curved perimeter gutter to follow the profile of the existing curved concrete parapet at the base of the new plywood dome.The team worked through a learning curve on the first shaft with regard to finding the best method of installation to the area and difficult detailing, and were then able to complete the Sika-Trocal works to the other three shafts in a seven day programme per shaft. Offering exceptional weather proofing and durability, the Sika-Trocal type S membrane was ideally suited to the curved dome shape of the ventilation shafts. Used in Great Britain since 1972, Sika-Trocal Type S family of membranes have been recognised for proven longevity with British Board of Agrément (BBA) Certification. As a result, the BBA has given all the Sika-Trocal Type S membranes a stated life expectancy ‘in excess of 30 years’. At 1364 metres long, the Blackwall Tunnel carries one of London's busiest commuter roads, the A102, under the River Thames between the boroughs of Greenwich in the south and Tower Hamlets in the north. STATE-OF-THE-ART BRIDGEND SCHOOL GETS CAREA CLADDING SYSTEM As part of the Archbishop McGrath Catholic High School’s £20m relocation to Brackla, in the heart of Bridgend, a new state-of-the-art school facility has been created. With environmental considerations paramount in the new development, a durable and sustainable cladding solution was required. For this, HLM specified Artema cladding from leading producer of facade systems, Carea.
The Carea system provides a wide range of benefits in addition to thermal efficiency and aesthetic appeal. Requiring minimal maintenance, the Artema panels are designed and manufactured to be non-porous. As such, this ensures that they provide an economical solution and long-term resistance to graffiti, weather conditions and climate.
The school, providing education for more than 40 years, has seen its student numbers double in the last 20 years. Combining increasing numbers with the gradual deterioration of existing buildings, consultation was carried out with the Bridgend County Borough Council, Welsh Government and Archdiocese of Cardiff to assess the school’s need for investment. As a result, the commitment to spend £20m on a new building was agreed, with the new school offering 8,500m2 of space including science laboratories and music suites as well as an allweather sports pitch.
The Carea cladding panels specified by HLM in riven texture and basalte colour, have been installed across three storeys and cover approximately 25% of the school’s total external walls. The dark grey 16mm Carea panels provide the school with a contemporary appearance, perfectly complementing the building’s modern architecture.
With any new development, sustainability was of utmost importance. Main contractors Leadbitter and HLM designed the school to achieve a BREEAM (2008) ‘excellent’ rating. To provide this ‘green’ school facility, the building’s design incorporates large amounts of insulation, recyclable materials and the use of local manufacturers and labour wherever possible. The external facade was also crucial to achieving the required BREEAM rating.With this in mind Carea was chosen to create an envelope that – comprising of 95% natural minerals – also offers superb thermal insulation, protecting the building against changes in temperature and eliminating thermal bridging.
