Nulty Designs A Lighting Scheme For Bromley

Town Hall’s Historic Restoration

International lighting design studio Nulty has completed a lighting scheme for Bromley Old Town Hall, part of a £20 million project to restore the architectural and cultural significance of the historic site. Nulty’s lighting design response supports the wider goals set by architecture practice Cartwright Pickard and interior design studio Fusion Interiors Group, to reclaim the heritage of the Grade II-Listed architecture and breathe new life into the flexible coworking space and all-day dining restaurant that now occupy the building.

The scheme balances the need for contemporary lighting interventions and a sensitive design narrative that prioritises reuse. Nulty reviewed archive photographs of the 1906 and 1939 sections of the building, then refurbished and reinstated traditional light fittings to honour the original aspirations of the old town hall. The juxtaposition of old and new plays out in the reception area, where suspended glass pendants have been used to create a focal point above the desk and seating area.

The composition forms a welcoming path of light, which pulls guests through to the more historically significant areas of the scheme where the traditional lighting language begins. Across the main circulation areas, original decorative fittings were reinstated or replicated to complement period features such as vaulted domed ceilings, cornices, and archways. In the building’s iconic central hall, artificial skylights were used to flood the space with light and pay reverence to the 1930s skylights that were removed when the

floor above was extended. The backlit ceilings are inherently modern and provide dynamic white light that accurately reflects the colour temperature and intensity of external light levels. A new restaurant takes up residence in the old Courthouse, a historic part of the building that has been opened to the public for the first time. Here, integrated perimeter lighting accentuates the wood panelled walls and uplights illuminate artwork and help to elevate the space.

Decorative glass pendants were reintroduced to ensure that the original design intent has been honoured and supplemented at a lower level by globe pendants to evoke a sense of intimacy. LED technology was integrated in all the workspaces and meeting rooms to deliver the required quality of light for focused work, video conferencing, and face-to-face meetings.

The basement has been repurposed to form a new thread of the building and features a dramatic circulation corridor come bike storage area. To compensate for the lack of natural light in this space, linear profiles were positioned along the length of the corridor to reinforce the curve of the exposed concrete walls and improve permeability by leading occupants along a soft cadence of light. www.nultylighting.co.uk

Truline Designs For The Senses

The latest in a long line of construction, fit out and design projects for Manchester Metropolitan University has been completed by Wigan based Truline Construction and Interior Services Ltd.

A new, community hub for the Student Union at MMU's Birley campus, Unit One, been innovatively designed and built by Truline. Unit One is a project for MMU that has been designed to appeal to all senses while ensuring it was a place that was fit for purpose, welcoming and encourages a longer dwell time.

The venue aims to be a destination for both students and local residents and changes from a café during the day to a bar venue in the evening with live entertainment. The designers chose contrasts of texture with reclaimed timber on the front of the counter / bar and tactile fabric in colour pops for the soft furnishings. The fluted back of the banquette seating area is covered in a vibrant blue fabric and the contrasting textures beg to be touched.

Acoustics have been carefully considered within the design. Bright yellow, geometric felt light fittings work with the planting scheme and acoustic wood slat wall to help ensure the sound is comfortable whether that's day time or evening.

The ceiling is a feast for the eyes with the exposed air vents, ducts and piping creating an

industrial feel. Aesthetically pleasing LED light tubes have been added for further interest to keep the eyes engaged. Bright yellow, which matches the geometric light fittings, was chosen for the tiling to reflect the university brand colours and this is contrasted with orange and blue pops of colour on the chairs.

The venue itself takes care of the smell and taste sensory experience with the delicious aroma of freshly ground coffee striking guests as soon as they walk in, and the homemade cakes, pastries and other snacks tempt the taste buds.

Mike Hyde, Managing Director, from Truline Construction, commented: "This project is the latest with our longstanding client, MMU. We have been a trusted partner since 2016, working collaboratively with MMU to successfully deliver planned maintenance and refurbishment projects in excess of £12m during this period."

14
D

"Unit One was our first design project for the Student Union at MMU and hugely enjoyable. Our project team worked hard to ensure the space was delivered on time and within budget. Ultimately, we are proud to have created an attractive and inviting space for staff, students and local Hulme community residents to enjoy."

The practicalities of a day to night venue are also considered by the Truline Construction team. This includes dozens of plug sockets for remote working, a range of seating from more formal upright areas for dining, comfy chairs to lounge in and variety of options for work spaces. The option to sit at high breakfast bar stools also changes the energy within Unit One.

Seating in the large windows makes the most of the natural light while the view is softened with hanging plants to add a level of privacy to those seats. The lighting can also be altered to have a huge impact of the mood and reflect the time of day or night transforming it totally from casual coffee shop into buzzing bar.

Louise White, head of finance and performance, from MMU: "Truline Construction totally understood the look and feel of what we were looking for and have created a welcoming space that feels part of MMU and is also a destination for local residents. It was key to create a space that supports a circular economy and encourages

longer dwell time whether that's for work or pleasure. Both have been perfectly catered for and since opening it's been a hugely popular venue." www.truline-cis.co.uk

GEZE UK – A Living Wage Company

GEZE UK is delighted to announce that the company has been accredited as a Living Wage Employer. The real Living Wage is the only UK wage rate based on the cost of living. It is voluntarily paid by over 14,000 UK businesses who believe their staff deserve a wage which meets everyday needs. To achieve the accreditation GEZE UK had to confirm that the company pays the real Living Wage to all directly employed staff and have a plan in place to pay all contractors a Living wage – both of which the company has done. Paying the real Living Wage is not only a benefit to staff but to the company too – it improves the employer brand and boosts staff productivity and motivation at work.

It also helps employers to remain competitive, retain existing staff and attract new staff. Rachel Boxall, Finance Director of GEZE UK, said: “We decided to go for the Living Wage accreditation as we think it is an excellent way to demonstrate our commitment to being a responsible employer. By paying the real Living Wage we are voluntarily taking a stand to ensure employees can earn a wage which is enough to live on. There is also growing evidence of the business benefits of becoming a Living Wage employer. This is demonstrated by the number of well-known and diverse companies already accredited such as Liverpool FC, Aviva, Oxfam and Ikea.“ For more information on the Living Wage Foundation go to https://www.livingwage.org.uk/ or for information on GEZE UK visit www.geze.co.uk

Access 360 Accelerates Sustainability Commitments With SBTi

Validation

Access solutions manufacturer, Access 360, is continuing to progress with its sustainability commitments following the approval of its parent company, Tyman’s, near-term sciencebased reduction targets (SBTs) by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The SBTi has validated the Group’s targets to reduce absolute scope 1 and scope 2 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 46.2% by 2030 from a 2019 base year and reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services by 27.5% within the same timeframe.

The approval follows two years of data gathering and modelling by the Group, in addition to deploying measures to reduce its carbon footprint. The SBTi’s approval is a significant achievement for Tyman’s 2030 Sustainability Roadmap, with one of the early priorities for the Group to understand its carbon footprint across its entire value chain and commit to targets required by the latest climate science by focusing on the most material sources of emissions.

As the Group’s consumption of electricity accounts for 70% of its scope 1 and scope 2 emissions, the initial

focus has been centred upon purchasing greener energy and installing solar technologies such as those at Access 360’s new headquarters in the West Midlands, whilst also reducing consumption at source. To reduce scope 3 carbon emissions, the Group is continuing to focus on updating product designs and selecting lower carbon materials, with Access 360 recently making a significant investment in its engineering department to support these objectives.

Emma Holly, General Manager for Access 360 said: “Tyman’s 2030 Sustainability Roadmap aims to transform our operations, culture and the solutions we offer our customers, bringing sustainability to the core of everything that we do. “The validation of the Group’s near-term SBTs by the SBTi is a significant step forward on our journey and highlights that not only are we committed to further reducing our energy, water and waste, in addition to our carbon emissions – we are also ensuring this is achieved in line with best practice."

“Going forward, we will continue to work towards achieving our goals by working effectively in partnership with our suppliers and customers to meet the requirements of the climate science by the end of 2030.” www.access-360.co.uk

Competence Initiative Makes Progress

The Joint Competency Initiative (JCI), in which the Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) is involved, is finalising its first framework for installers within the door, gates and shutter industry. ADSA is working with the Door Hardware Federation (DHF) and the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) to establish the first of the “routes to competence” for the sector. This is due to be published in May. The JCI was established in response to the Building Safety Act and is considered to be the most significant change to health and safety legislation within the construction industry over the past 40 years. The framework for installers includes skills required for the fitting of powered pedestrian doors of all types, steel and wooden fire-rated doors, gates and shutter systems including steel fire doors.

Ken Price, ADSA’s Managing Director, said that a “systematic process to identify what competence looks like” had been established over the past six months. This will be used to create the many frameworks needed across the industry. Each of the organisations on the working group has undertaken a situational analysis to identify ‘where are we now’ and research into training and qualifications needed for installer roles. “Although we have found some excellent entry and specific skills training with regulated qualifications, we identified a gap around continuous professional development (CPD). This was mixed and largely unaccredited as installers moved through their career. We are all in agreement that this needs to be addressed and an accredited route to CPD created.” The group recently began working with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) which already has established national occupational standards for the construction industry.

Added Ken: “We had a call from the CITB which had heard about the work we were undertaking and offered to help. Without a shadow of a doubt, this support has moved us forward and will help us deliver the whole project a lot faster than if we were doing it on our own.” The group has to identified up to 12 individual functions that each require a competency framework. This will include service and other skilled roles, such as procurement. The JCI was initially formed by technical and procurement leads from BAM, ISG, Kier, Laing O’Rourke, Lendlease, Mace, Morgan Sindall, Multiplex, Sir Robert McAlpine, John Sisk, Skanska and Wates Group. Its vision has been to establish, “proportionate and practical requirements relating to both organisational and individual competence of those working in the glazing, cladding and roofing sectors”.

This has led to the publication of a white paper, ‘Achieving Competence inthe Building Envelope Sector’, available for download from ADSA’s website: www.adsa.org.uk/news/post/first-edition-of-the-jci-competency-white-paper-1/

Maintaining U-value With SXP Single Ply Membrane Panel Fasteners

SFS Group Fastening Technology has launched an innovative new range of single ply membrane fasteners, in three sizes featuring a unique self-coring washer design, with a choice of two head drives and hardened drill points plus two types of slimline drive bar and other benefits; all aimed at giving the installer full confidence in securing the widely used, triple layer, insulated panels. SFS's new SXP range is being introduced in three variants with the 25mm SXP2 intended to secure panel overlaps, while the 35mm SXP5's proportionately longer point is for drilling into light-gauge steel, and the 47mm SXP14 delivers the greatest drilling capacity to tackle heavy gauge steel.

Produced in stainless steel with either Torx or Hex drive, all three have thread-free or free spin zones which prevent over-driving while also avoiding the fastener being loosened through vibration or thermal movement. Crucially, the carefully engineered self-coring washer cuts a clear pathway through the insulation layer to avoid any unnecessary damage and help maintain the thermal integrity of the panel.

Product Manager Francesca McGibbon commented: "Our new SXP range represents a significant advancement on our previous offering for securing single ply membrane panels with the SXP2 being the new variant: a clamping fastener or ‘stitcher' for panel overlaps. Originally, the fasteners used a Torx drive, but we have now added a Hex drive so there's more flexibility and, therefore, greater confidence for installers. Then, because of the way that the SXP range is designed, it achieves a much cleaner entry through the membrane, thanks to the self-coring washer. Essentially its ‘corkscrew' motion achieves a clear passage and minimum disruption to the insulation, which helps maintain the U-value of the roof build up." https://uk.sfs.com/

Style Adds Space Flexibility to London’s Sustainable Skyscraper

Taking sustainability to a new level, 8 Bishopsgate is tallest building in the UK to achieve a BREEAM Outstanding and EPC

A rating. Contributing to the low carbon footprint, Style, who offer moveable partitioning wall systems that are certified with an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) in accordance with ISO 14025 and EN15804, was contracted to work with architect, WilkinsonEyre and contractor, Brown and Carroll, to create flexible space on three levels.

Utilising a combination of Dorma Huppe Variflex semi-automatic, solid and glazed moveable wall systems, Style created adaptable meeting and breakout areas to accommodate different sized groups and events whilst maximising the use of natural light. 8 Bishopsgate is a landmark, 50-storey tower

offering premium office space in central London. With sustainability a key element, the building boasts an array of architectural optimisations ranging from the recycling of heat from the cooling systems to the installation of the highest solar panels in London. Positioning the company

and its products at the forefront of sustainability, Style not only holds the EPD, but is also accredited under the ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management System, ensuring operational processes maximise sustainability goals whilst limiting wasted resources.

In addition to Style’s green credentials, the moveable walls installed at 8 Bishopsgate boast a 52db acoustic rating on the glazed walls, and a 59db rating on the solid walls, ensuring complete privacy between divided areas. Not forgetting aesthetics, on level 2 the solid walls are finished in a perforated timber veneer, and on level 50 a kvadrat steel cut trio fabric was applied, perfectly harmonising with the interior décor.

Making Acoustics Work At The Office

International Danish food company Danish Crown’s new headquarters has just been completed in Randers, Denmark.

The 13,000 square metre complex comprises offices, meeting rooms, fitness centre, show kitchen, canteen and break-out areas. Designed by CEBRA Architecture, the interior maximises natural daylight and focuses on a healthy indoor climate and healthy materials.

As part of the scheme for materials in natural tones and hard surfaces, Troldtekt acoustic panels were also specified for all the ceilings to ensure good acoustics and a comfortable sound environment for the many employees throughout the building. There are different variants of Troldtekt acoustic panels throughout the building. The award-winning ‘Troldtekt ® line’ from the design solutions range, in a natural finish, blends harmoniously with the brickwork in the many open areas, walkways and offices.

Mikkel Frost, architect and partner at CEBRA Architecture, commented "Troldtekt line was a perfect match for the broken bond brickwork, while at the same time creating a good acoustic environment. The natural colour also matches the brick, so it was a bit of a no-brainer for us". Troldtekt acoustic panels are available in a variety of different structures and colours and combine superior sound absorption with an award-winning design. The Troldtekt range has a minimum expected life cycle of 50 years coupled with excellent resistance to humidity and tested to meet ball impact standards. The range is available in various sizes and structures and can be supplied as natural wood or finished in almost any RAL or NCS colour.

Depending on the panel specified, reaction to fire is classed in accordance with EN 13501 as B-s1,d0 or A2-s1,d0 respectively. Cradle to Cradle Certified ® at Gold level, Troldtekt wood wool acoustic panels are manufactured using wood from certified forests (PEFC ™ and FSC ® C115450) and can contribute positively to a building’s BREEAM, WELL or LEED points. Vicaima Present Another Dimension For Interiors With Dekordor® 3D

Popular for over a decade, the Dekordor® 3D range from Vicaima has long been a first choice with specifiers of living and working spaces. With its attractive textural and hard-wearing surface, ideal for contemporary surroundings as well as demanding locations; this competitively priced interior timber door or door kit has much to commend it for both modern private dwellings and social environments.

Now, with innovation and inspiration firmly in mind, the range has been re-imagined for a new generation of specifiers, with no less than 15 tonal and textural options, making flexible design and performance, available to suit a wider range of project budgets.

Dekordor® 3D is not just about door appearance either. It can be provided in the full gambit of performance solutions from Vicaima. IVC Commercial For A Mature Perspective At Bryn Celynnog Comprehensive School

Luxury vinyl and heterogeneous vinyl floors from IVC Commercial have been installed in the new sixth form and gymnasium buildings at Bryn Celynnog Comprehensive School in Beddau, near Pontypridd in South Wales. The new facilities at Bryn Celynnog Comprehensive School have been designed by Rio Architects as a modern multi-use premise that’s in-line with the latest teaching and learning standards.

IVC Commercial's Moduleo 55 luxury vinyl tiles and Isafe 70 sheet vinyl flooring were chosen by Rio Architects to create a sophisticated aesthetic that reflects the student's maturing perspective throughout their school career. Lee Protheroe, an Architect and Associate Director at Rio Architects, explains: “We chose flooring products that complement the overall spatial

design, while also providing a crisp, light, and contrasting appearance. Moduleo 55 Desert Stone vinyl tiles were selected throughout for their textured and softer aesthetic that fits with the modern and sophisticated design of the building.”

Moduleo 55 Desert Stone is a highperformance luxury vinyl floor that’s exclusively designed and made in Belgium for excellent quality. With scratch and stain resistance, as well as being easy to maintain, it brings a natural stone look that’s suitable for high levels of footfall. Distinction needed to be achieved between the teaching and circulation spaces, so Rio Architects opted for two different colours in the monolithic look of Desert Stone.

I

This allowed for a smooth transition between spaces without awkward transfers or changing products, helping the floor to achieve its sophisticated look. Desert Stone has been installed in all learning and congregation areas. In the changing rooms and toilet facilities, Rio Architects has chosen the practicality and affordability of IVC Commercial’s Isafe 70 heterogeneous vinyl flooring. Achieving 42+ PTV, this floor comes with a high level of slip resistance that makes it ideal for use in areas exposed to water (it is not suitable for wet room use).

Equipped with the upgraded Hypergrip+ finish for an improved clear and matt appearance and with Sanitec antibacterial treatment, it delivers a durable, hygienic and low maintenance flooring option. “We have successfully used IVC Commercial products before, notably at the award-winning STEAM Academy project that we designed for Bridgend College,” continues Lee Protheroe.

“There is an extensive range that meets our project requirements in terms of aesthetics, safety and performance. The installation at Bryn Celynnog Comprehensive School has lived up to our aspirations for these modern learning environments and we will consider using these products again in the future.” A total of 2,500m2 of IVC Commercial floors were installed throughout Bryn Celynnog Comprehensive School by Puma Floors Ltd, Cardiff. www.ivc-commercial.com

KEUCO AXESS, Design By Studio

Accessibility in the bathroom has never been so beautiful

When Studio F. A. Porsche designed a range of accessible bathroom products for KEUCO, the result was something unique: German engineering meets premium interior design. What is striking about the entire KEUCO AXESS barrier-free range, Design by Studio F. A. Porsche, is the clean lines of all the products – commencing with the folding support rail, positioned over the rail system for the shower, the grab rails, through to the freestanding stool.

The design, focuses on the essentials, combining aesthetics and barrier-free functionality in a stylish and innovative way, without making the special functions visually obvious. It is this aspect that will pleasantly surprise design lovers who want to see accessibility integrated in the bathroom: products with a minimalist appearance - design that inspires.

40 I

Good design has to be honest - “It was our wish to meet the highest aesthetic demands and yet incorporate the specific needs of a barrier-free bathroom system. Our aim was to develop accessible bathroom products from a completely new perspective. Timeless, very clear, aesthetic forms, permanently perceived as beautiful, even after many years. Independent of the spirit of time and trends and at the same time, beyond anything known so far. Out ambition was to create something special, right down to the smallest detail, and making it technically possible. A combination of German engineering and top-quality implementation in every respect.“ Christian Schwamkrug, Design Director Studio F. A. Porsche.

Accessibility meets design: for high-quality bathrooms across all sectors - KEUCO AXESS, Design by Studio F. A. Porsche, is designed for barrier-free bathrooms in hospitality, private and public sectors, e.g. high-quality healthcare facilities such as hospitals and nursing homes, hotels and spas, restaurants in the home. KEUCO AXESS is a sustainable and cross-generational concept made from high-quality materials in a beautiful and timeless design. KEUCO AXESS ensures the comfortable and safe use of all areas of the bathroom - not only for the elderly, those currently in need of care or for people with a physical disability, but for all generations.

The intelligent design details support independence and autonomy in the bathroom; so, people of all ages and abilities can benefit from comfort-enhancing functions. What may be a useful aid for one person, provides additional comfort for another, such as taking a shower whilst sitting down. A barrier-free bathroom brings many advantages, regardless of age and physical constitution. A bathroom without barriers offers a adds to the quality of life, is comfortable, future-oriented and, thanks to

the unique design of KEUCO AXESS, Design by Studio F. A. Porsche, is extremely attractive and visually appealing. Turning barrier-free bathrooms into ‘bathrooms’ for people of all ages and for all life situations. More and more building owners in the project sector, architects, and planners along with private individuals, when deciding to renovate or refurbish, opt for barrier- free solutions. They increase the level of comfort and safety in the bathroom and add to the value of a property – even more so now with the unique design of KEUCO AXESS!.

Elegance on the wall: a folding support rail like no other - Studio F. A. Porsche has developed a strikingly beautiful and unique solution together with KEUCO - for a folding support rail, the special highlight of the barrier-free KEUCO AXESS range. It looks nothing like folding support rails of the past as the visually appealing folding support rail stands uniquely flat against the wall when folded up.

When unfolded and exposed in the downward position, the KEUCO AXESS support rail is a beautiful and elegant solution. It is available in three finishes: chrome, matt black or aluminium- chrome and depending on the surface, a grip-friendly plastic inlay in black or white is seamlessly integrated. The plastic is significant as it makes it easy to grip and prevents slipping when supporting or holding on.

There is an optional and retrofittable toilet paper holder which has a black or white roller stopper enabling it to colour match the design. Two different projections in 700 and 850 mm offer perfect safety and support. The larger projection folding support rail is also suitable for larger wheelchair-accessible WCs. (cont...)

41 XTRA

(cont...) The optional and retrofittable radio WC flush actuator integrates aesthetically into the handle and is compatible with radio flush cisterns from common manufacturers via Bluetooth. Despite the reduced design, stability is guaranteed with 115 kg load capacity: KEUCO AXESS folding support handles are TÜV tested and certified according to DIN standard.

The rail system - beautiful design that provides support at the same time The rail system and the grab rails of the KEUCO AXESS range are characterised by their elegant yet starkly simplistic design. The versatile range provides support and safety in the shower and bath, at the washbasin and WC. Despite high stability when holding and supporting, yet this ergonomic design appears light, stylish, and uncumbersome.

The grip surface at the front forms a smooth rectangular band - with flat surfaces and precise edges. At the back, the rail/grip system and handles are ergonomically shaped in a semicircle - for an optimised grip. This oval rounded back perfectly fits in the hand when grasping so it is not necessary to exert a great deal of force when holding on; ensuring a secure grip and a reliable hold. The unobtrusive wall fixings of the rail system and grab rails emphasise the clear, minimalistic design, whilst ensuring sufficient

stability for a barrier-free solution. The range of KEUCO AXESS grab rails ranges in lengths from 400 to 1000 mm. In the shower, the rail system can be flexibly adapted to suit on-site conditions. The shower rail also serves as a stable grab rail, always giving a feeling of safety.

The shower slider can be unlocked and moved up or down simply by pressing on the back, and this can be done with one hand. The shower head can be turned in various positions, to the left and right in the holder and can be tilted up and down from any angle without any problems.

Safe, beautiful and comfortable: mobile seating in the bathroom - A stable seat is a plus for comfort in the bathroom. Taking a shower while sitting down is particularly comfortable. KEUCO has supplemented its range of seats with the mobile KEUCO AXESS stool. The design of the KEUCO AXESS stool, Design by Studio F. A. Porsche, is crafted to the highest standard: as minimalistic, as safe as possible, and as comfortable as possible. In an archetypical, timeless design, the stylish stool takes up little space in the bathroom and fits in any corner.

42 I

With a load capacity of 150 kg, the KEUCO AXESS stool can be used in both private and public areas. The stool is particularly stable and resilient as the discretely outward-facing legs with anti-slip ensure a secure standing position, whilst being easy to reposition using one hand. The softly roughened, non-slip surface of the seat has a pleasant feel and is easy to clean. The seat is slightly curved inwards and features a small hole in the middle which allows water to drain off directly in the shower. The mobile stool with a white or black seat can be harmoniously integrated into the bathroom or shower area. With a white seat, you can choose between chrome or aluminium legs; with a black seat, the legs are also in black. All versions are robust, durable and easy to clean.

(Stylishly) safe barrier-free even in the professional environment of hospitals and nursing homes - For people in need of care, access to the individual bathroom areas can be difficult or even impossible. They are dependent on assistance. Nevertheless, for all people and age groups, the desire for independence and autonomy in the bathroom plays a very decisive role in maintaining quality of life. Assistance from care staff can be optimally supplemented in the bathroom with KEUCO AXESS as the flexible and adaptable barrier-free bathroom range made by KEUCO enables a high degree of independence for users and facilitates the daily work of care staff.

Ideally, a barrier- free bathroom equipped with KEUCO AXESS is designed in such a way that people can find their way around without help, if possible - whether they are motor-impaired, people with little strength or users with cognitive impairments and coordination problems. KEUCO AXESS combines barrierfree comfort with a high degree of aesthetics, the shapes and materials meet the highest standards of hygiene and ease of care, even in the optional service area.

Andreas Lohmann, Head of Object Management at KEUCO: "KEUCO AXESS closes a real gap. Products for barrier-free bathroom design that don't look like they are barrier-free. A flexible and aesthetic professional system. Well thought-out and with a strong design.

Perfectly combinable with IXMO fittings and KEUCO accessories - KEUCO AXESS products are perfectly matched to KEUCO IXMO fittings. The cover plate can be combined in either round or square. In the shower, head and hand showers can be individually combined. The IXMO range of fittings from KEUCO enjoys great popularity among design lovers and sanitary professionals thanks to the bundling of functions with a minimalist appearance.

IXMO fittings are available for all areas in the bathroom: washbasin, shower, bathtub and bidet. IXMO stands for "x possibilities" and promises: design variety and planning freedom, aesthetics and easy care, quick and an affordable installation. The KEUCO AXESS barrier-free range can also be combined with various KEUCO accessory collections, such as the PLAN or REVA range.

Various different KEUCO shower shelves make handling easier and, together with a comfortable seat from KEUCO, bring real pleasure to the shower. KEUCO AXESS series, in combination with IXMO fittings and KEUCO accessories, can be used to transform any bathroom in the object or private sector into a design-strong, barrier-free place of well-being. www.keuco.com/gb

Adding a power supply infrastructure to an outdoor public space, such as a courtyard or enclosed garden, is an excellent way to unlock the potential for holding events and creating more revenue-generating space, says Pop Up Power Supplies.

How To Specify Outdoor Power Distribution Units To Meet Anticipated Demand

Adding a power supply infrastructure to an outdoor public space, such as a courtyard or enclosed garden, is an excellent way to unlock the potential for holding events and creating more revenue-generating space. But how can you ensure that the proposed power supply will meet the demands and needs of the site given the versatility that comes when an outdoor space is power-connected?

Over-specifying the services infrastructure and distribution units could be a costly mistake. But under-specifying could result in the need to hire temporary generators or run lengthy trailing cables from adjacent buildings, creating avoidable trip hazards.

Whether you are a site owner or an architect or landscape architect working to enhance an outdoor space, the starting point is to ask three basic questions about demand and needs:

1) How do you envisage that your proposed power unit or power distribution system will be used?

2) How many power sockets will be needed?

3) Would the location also benefit from a supply of water or data connectivity?

46 V

Designing-in versatility - Equipping any outdoor space with a power infrastructure is going to add a great degree of flexibility of use to the location. But when designing the power supply, it is important to have a picture of the typical and maximum usage that will be required.

Going back to basics, why is the site going to benefit from a power infrastructure? For a business such as a restaurant, bar, café or hotel, the outdoor space could add additional areas for eating and drinking primarily. Such uses would typically require the power distribution to provide access to sockets for lighting, till points, AV equipment or outdoor serving points

such as mobile counters or drinks dispensers. But is that the limit to such a site’s potential? Could it also be used as a stage are for outdoor music performances and other entertainment, for example. And if so, would your proposed power supply solution accommodate these requirements too?

Also think about the location of the power units in relation to how they will be used.

If the site is to be used for market stalls, where will the stalls be set up on site and where will the main pedestrian routes be? Installing power units in the correct locations will help reduce the risk of trip hazards as cables trailing across the main footfall areas can be minimised or avoided completely.

Once you have a picture of how the site could be used, it is time to consider how you feed power to the locations across the space. This can be achieved with the installation of a Pop Up Power Supplies® power distribution unit in one of three forms:

1) Pop up, retractable power unit – this is submerged in the group until it is needed, and raised/lowered using a turning handle.

2) Flip-lid, in ground power unit – this is permanently submerged in the ground with access provided via a flip-lid which can be used while the lid is locked down.

3) Power bollard – a street furniture element which has power sockets integrated, accessible as required behind a lockable cover.

The type of power unit you choose will depend on how the site will need to look or be used when the space is not being used for events, catering, etc. Both the pop-up and in-ground units can be hidden away when they are not in use, with the only evidence being a cover which can be designed to match surrounding surface materials.

A power bollard has a permanent presence, but the designs available from Pop Up Power Supplies® are elegant to avoid the utilitarian appearance that would be expected with a typical feeder pillar.

What should each power unit provide? - Consider what the electricity demand will be for the equipment that is to be connected to ensure the power supply units can handle the load. This is an area where Pop Up Power Supplies® has a wealth of expertise to help, given our experience of providing power units for a diverse range of sites across the UK, from Caerphilly Castle visitor centre to Chelsea FC’s Stamford Bridge pitch.

The retractable power units available from Pop Up Power Supplies® can be specified to provide a total power supply from as little as 63 amps right up to 600 amps. In ground units offer the option of 63 amps or 125 amps and power bollards provide up to 125 amps. The sockets in all can be configured to suit usage requirements.

These units can also be designed to provide a water supply or data connectivity. Access to water can be particularly useful for ground maintenance and cleaning purposes, so consider that too and the units can become extremely useful assets. www.popuppower.co.uk

Choosing The Right Heating Controls...

Reducing the costs of heating in difficult times - From sophisticated users who want the latest wifi controlled options, to elderly or vulnerable people who need the simplest of controls to cope with their heating system –it’s vital that there’s a full range of complexity available in today’s heating controls marketplace. And ESi is taking a lead in this forward thinking approach, able to offer a control suitable for any home in the UK.

With the current cost of living crisis, lead by spiralling energy costs, the decision as to which heating controls to include in a new build heating installation or in a heating system replacement project is more important than ever. But it’s not always straightforward, with a wealth of options available and a range of combinations of components that can enable homeowners to be in control of the heating in their homes. But it’s vital that the controls installed meet the requirements and on occasions the limitations of the potential users.

There is no point installing the latest wifi or blue tooth connected controls if the homeowner or tenant is elderly or vulnerable and unable to fathom out how to use the latest smart controls now available. If they need a straightforward dial control, that is what you should install. Clever use of controls can help minimise energy consumption by ensuring each room is at the right temperature for comfort, whilst avoiding overheating.

V

Installers are still the key decision makers when it comes to selecting heating controls – most of their customers will rely on them to offer the best solution for them and it will help if installers can explain the controls in reasonable detail to make them aware of why they are installing the controls they have selected even if in broad terms relating to the energy savings available and the environmental benefits of the controls chosen. As well as offering Boiler Plus compliant units, ESi is one of the leading members of the OpenTherm Association, offering access to the OpenTherm protocol.

OpenTherm is a non-manufacturer dependent system of communication between modulating HVAC appliances and room thermostats. Quite simply, it consists of a communication protocol and an interface specification. More and more appliance manufacturers are bringing modulating central heating systems onto the market –traditional boilers and renewable options including many heat pumps. These appliances offer better efficiency and reduced environmental effects. However, to operate these appliances, a communication protocol between the appliance and the controller is required. It involves the addition of a small bit of software only available to OpenTherm Association members.

OpenTherm is a communications protocol that allows modulating heating appliances to communicate directly with the heating controls within the property. By having constant communications between the ‘thermostat’ and the ‘boiler’, the heating controls can accurately control the appliances heating output, ensuring the correct amount of heat is given to the heating system at the correct time. In terms of OpenTherm gas condensing boilers, this leads to significant energy savings by keeping condensing boilers in condensing mode for much longer durations.

OpenTherm allows 3rd party control manufacturers to create a wide range of simple control solutions for boilers. The beauty of OpenTherm is it can be applied not just to modulation condensing gas boilers, but to any heating and hot water system that uses the OpenTherm protocol. So, an OpenTherm gas boiler and OpenTherm control fitted right now, could be easily added to an OpenTherm Heat Pump and OpenTherm MVHR system in the future.

OpenTherm can easily be changed and adapted. ESi is just one of the companies signed up to the OpenTherm Association, agreeing to work with it to introduce a wider acceptance of OpenTherm as a standard in the UK. Manufacturers of boilers and controls that have already evaluated the OpenTherm protocol’s compatibility with their systems include major companies in Europe with

an influence in the UK – wanting to see the acceptance of the OpenTherm protocol here in the UK marketplace. Recognising the common sense in developing a common use ‘Open’ system here in the UK, the protocol importantly, also has the support of industry bodies HHIC and BEAMA who are committed to supporting OpenTherm’s wider introduction here. ESi has launched its new, top of the range, 6 Series WiFi Programmable Room Thermostat, offering the latest in heating control for homes and commercial premises here in the UK. Fully OpenTherm compatible, this new range of controls allows full control via the room thermostat or via a mobile phone or tablet, with a range of features to impress even the most demanding specifier, installer or homeowner.

It includes Optimum Start/Stop, Domestic Hot Water (DHW) setpoint, Hot Water time and temperature control when working in conjunction with a wireless cylinder thermostat, full 7 day, 5/2 day or 24 hour programming options, a boost facility, a helpful Holiday Mode and is an ERP Class 5 Product. The new controls are available in white or grey. And its latest release is the new RTP4 Touch. The 4 Touch has a large backlit LCD display and touch screen making it simple-to-use and programme.

The RTP4 Touch slots in neatly between ESi’s best selling RTP4RF units and its top of the range 6 Series WIFI programmable room thermostats, offering many of the benefits of both these ranges but providing additional benefits as well.

Thermal Efficiency: Starting From The Top

In addition to enabling safe and easy access to a roof area, whilst also providing a potential means of escape in an emergency, roof access solutions can contribute to a building’s thermal performance.

With climate change targets and sustainability putting the thermal efficiency of a building higher on a specifier’s agenda than ever before, it can’t be forgotten that the roof accounts for between 25% and 30% of all heat lost through the building envelope.

Changes to the Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards came into force on 1st April – rendering non-domestic buildings unlettable unless they have an EPC (Energy Performance Certificate)

rating of E or above. In accordance with Part L2 of Building Regulations, specifiers must consider how the building envelope impacts energy consumption and the requirement to identify locations where there are opportunities for reducing energy consumption.

Whilst safety is the top priority when planning for roof access, it’s important to also consider the importance of specifying and installing the most appropriate products on the roof to prevent heat loss wherever possible.

V

Roof access hatches are one of the main products that allow specifiers to make a major difference to their building’s U-Value, by focusing on products which provide superior thermal performance. A roof access hatch allows for safe access to a flat roof, where the user opens the cover of the hatch to gain access to the roof. A roof access hatch comprises two large parts: the upstand and the cover. Specifiers should consider whether an access hatch is ‘thermally broken’, and also take into account the insulation of the hatch. All Bilco UK roof access hatches are manufactured with 75mm of PIR insulation as standard. Bilco UK’s thermally broken aluminium S-50TB Roof Access Hatch minimises heat transfer between interior and exterior metal surfaces.

The result is a product that resists harmful condensation and provides superior energy efficiency. The GS-50TB is based on the S-50TB Roof Access Hatch with the added benefits of a skylight. Bilco UK’s SKY Flatglass includes a polyester upstand that is fully insulated for weathertightness and an inner layer of low-emissivity (Low-E) glass that reflects infrared and ultraviolet light from inside the building, supporting the thermal performance of the product, whilst simultaneously maintaining an attractive design.

The SKY Flatglass is a versatile product that acts as a three in one solution; it is simultaneously a smoke vent, roof access hatch and rooflight, saving space, time and money. This three-in-one element also reduces three roof penetrations into a single one which also helps to improve thermal efficiency. This is a perfect example of how specifiers can factor thermal efficiency into their roof safety purchases as an extra value proposition, without compromising on fundamental safety considerations, while keeping costs down. www.bilcouk.co.uk

How Aluprof Systems Help Specifiers Meet the Climate Emergency Design Guide

Formed in 2017, the London Energy Transformation Initiative (LETI) was established to review what our capital’s future construction should look like to meet our low-carbon future. Released in 2020, the Climate Emergency Design Guide has gained extensive support from architects, developers, and professionals in the built environment throughout the UK. It has been downloaded more than 60,000 times in over 100 countries, and its requirements are acknowledged and adhered to by building professionals across the UK.

With LETI’s growing influence across the UK, the team behind LETI renamed their network as the ‘Low Energy Transformation Initiative’. In the UK 49% of annual carbon emissions are attributable to buildings and, with increased cost of energy, there continues to be a great deal of concern as to how people and businesses can continue to heat and power their homes and offices in the future. Whilst the cost of energy has recently stabilised, it will inevitably remain a large part of a future household budget.

As the government softens its move away from fossil fuels and legislation in the form of a weakened Document L proposal for 2025, it seems that specifiers in the UK are taking the lead in our transition to a zero carbon future. In the past our building professionals have been trying to educate property owners why investing in thermally efficient construction is cost effective, but, with relatively low energy costs, the increase in construction costs has often lead to schemes being cut back in preference to profit.

With the understanding of commercial building rating schemes such as BREEAM and LEED it has been proven to businesses that the investment does indeed save costs and demonstrates a business’s commitment to helping save the environment.

54 O
Aluprof

The same can be said for residential development where homeowners are beginning to realise that a low-carbon, or Passivhaus constructed home offers some form of future proofing and is a good investment. A huge amount has been learned by building professionals over the past twenty or more years on how to design, build and successfully operate these zero carbon buildings. Aluprof UK are committed to offering specifiers in the UK the very best systems and design support to ensure that specified aluminium fenestration is not only correct for its application, but designed into the fabric of a building to maximise interface insulation.

A poorly installed high thermal performance window will lose much of its insulation properties, especially when used in a refurbishment situation unless the building interfaces are redesigned to eliminate cold bridging. Whilst LETI are targeting that all buildings built from 2030 onwards will be of a zero carbon construction, there is a vast swathe of existing buildings across the UK that we need to bring up to zero carbon by 2050 if we are to meet our climate goals.

Aluprof recognises the importance of addressing both embodied carbon and carbon in use within their product ranges. While many manufacturers focus on reducing the carbon content during manufacture, Aluprof goes

further by offering Passivhaus-certified, thermally efficient systems. These systems not only reduce embodied carbon but also continue to save carbon once buildings are completed and inhabited, thereby addressing both aspects of carbon reduction.

High thermal performance systems from Aluprof include the MB-104 SI (Passivhaus Certified) windows and door system and the MB-SR50N HI+ (Passivhaus Certified) curtain walling system. The Greenhaus project, recently completed in Salford is a Passivhaus residential construction which uses Aluprof’s MB-104 PASSIV SI windows and MB-TT50 curtain wall. The project was designed by Buttress Architects and completed by Eric Wright Construction. The European group have long been recognised for providing Passivhaus certified products with Aluprof UK being active members of the UK’s Passivhaus Trust.

Support using these systems is freely available to specifiers and includes design advice and modelling of installations to gain the very best building performance. A recent addition to the Aluprof portfolio is the MB-79N system which is available in three thermally efficient variants. The economical version, MB-79N E, features a one component central seal.

The MB-79N ST version is offered with a two component central seal and the MB-79N SI variant is provided with a two component central seal along with inserts of thermal insulation cores. For external doors, Aluprof also offers the MB-79N SI+ variant that comes with an internal perimeter gasket and insulation cores inside the profiles. This new system achieves a 0.83 U value with triple glazing and a 1.2 U value with a double glazing option.

Whilst high performance curtain walling, windows and doors can greatly assist in thermal insulation, especially when specified with high performance glazed units, it should be remembered that there are also additional products that may be used to enhance thermal stabilisation of a building space. Solar shading, or brise soileil, can offer sun shading of glazing helping to reduce solar gains. Solar shading can take the form of fixed louvres or external Venetian or roller blinds.

Enhancing thermal insulation, roller shutters can be added at the design stage to external window reveals, furthermore, shutters can also offer enhanced building security, especially at ground floor level. Aluprof offer a wide range of additional products that can be discussed with the specified options during the early design stages. Aluprof are proud to be one of Europes largest aluminium systems companies. Specification support is available through the company’s website at aluprof.co.uk , directly from their UK head office in Altrincham or from their London office at the Building Design Centre by phoning +44 (0) 161 941 4005

Sto Creates Fire Compliant Facades Across Multiple Residential Buildings

An external wall insulation (EWI) system manufactured by Sto has optimised fire protection for a multi-block residential development. Located alongside the River Thames at London's Isle of Dogs, Oceans Wharf was built in circa 2,000 and comprises four blocks of flats ranging from seven to twelve storeys. To comply with amendments to Building Regulations, which ban combustible materials in external walls of buildings over 11m, the existing expanded polystyrene insulation (EPS) system installed by another manufacturer, had to be removed and replaced. The project’s first phase comprised two buildings which had the StoTherm Mineral K EWI system specified to meet the required fire rating while maximising thermal performance.

56 O

BBA-certified, StoTherm Mineral K features A1 mineral fibre insulation boards and the system is classified with an A2-s1, d0 reaction to fire in accordance with BS EN 13501. Specialist surface finishers, One & Maike was responsible for installing StoTherm Mineral K on behalf of principal contractor Osprey, a façade remediation specialist.

The insulation boards were fixed directly to the existing concrete substrate avoiding the need for a cavity. StoLevell Duo Plus, a strong mineral adhesive, was applied to the back of the insulation boards, and additional fixings were also used to secure the insulation boards to the substrate to suit wind load conditions.

Sto-Glass Fibre Mesh was then embedded into the outer surface of the reinforcing coat providing crack resistance to the system. To reflect the buildings’ original aesthetics, the system was finished with StoSilco K1.5, a silicone resin render ensuring high levels of water repellence and protection from harsh

weather conditions. This was applied across an area totalling 2,500 sq m creating elevations featuring various colours, including white, terracotta and blue.

James Conetta, Director at One & Maike, commented:

“The two buildings in phase one differ in height and shape, so we worked closely with Sto from the survey stage to deliver the project as effectively and efficiently as possible"

"We faced many challenges during the installation. The existing concrete substrate was very uneven, and the taller building is curved which made it more difficult to adhere and mechanically fix the boards. Thanks to the skills of our applicators, combined with the quality of Sto’s products and technical support, we were able to overcome these issues and deliver a seamless, even finish.”

Following the project’s successful delivery, StoTherm Mineral K was also specified for phase two, which saw a further two blocks of flats upgraded to optimise fire protection. www.sto.co.uk

Proctor Air® Provides Peace Of Mind For Apartment Residents During Essential Reroofing Works

A significant challenge when working on the roof of any existing, occupied building is protecting the people inside the building without the full roof system in place. At Hatchemeadow apartments in Northumberland, operated by the housing association, Bernicia, a key performance characteristic of Proctor Air that helped to address these challenges was its water holdout. That, combined with its vapour and air permeability, offered long-term peace of mind for the building owners, as well as apartment residents.

Problems with the existing roof specification were causing some residents to experience leaks during periods of poor weather. Bernicia tasked Wensley Roofing with stripping back the existing roof and installing a new system. James Roy, Senior Quantity Surveyor at Wensley Roofing, describes the replacement roof system as a “belt and braces” approach. “The specification used Proctor Air over the rafters, followed by counter battens, tile battens, and a new pantile finish,” he explained. “Some of the residents were having to use buckets to catch leaking water,” said James. “Since installing this new system the leaks have now stopped, and there has been some bad weather.”

As a roofing underlay, Proctor Air’s key function is as a low-resistance (LR), vapour-permeable membrane. Proctor Air is one of the highest performing vapour-permeable membranes on the market. As well as vapour permeability, Proctor Air provides air permeability. At Hatchmeadow apartments, the reroofing offered the opportunity to top up the insulation in the roof and provide extra thermal comfort. However, with all the work carried out externally, it wasn’t possible to also check on the continuity and integrity of any vapour control layer below the insulation. Using Proctor Air meant this was not an issue. www.proctorgroup.com

Schöck Isokorb's A Wow At Bow

Arnold Road required both standard and bespoke Schöck Isokorbs A 100% affordable housing scheme at Arnold Road, in Bow, East London, will create 62 homes in two mid-rise buildings of six and eight storeys. Designed by architects Henley Halebrown, the scheme – which was shortlisted for the 2020 Housing Design Awards – is cleverly woven into a compact triangular site. The architectural concept breaks what might have been one long building block into two separate buildings, permitting morning and afternoon light to penetrate between the buildings.

This reduces their impact and improves the microclimate for residents and neighbours as well as increasing the surface area of the new buildings to achieve 80% dual aspect homes. Together the buildings frame an entrance courtyard designed to encourage residents to meet and talk, and children to play together. Thermally broken recessed balcony terraces - The heavy masonry façades incorporate recessed balcony terraces and Schöck have supplied Isokorb structural thermal breaks for both the in-situ concrete balconies and the precast concrete façade banding.

O

On the eight-storey South Block the inset balconies are supported on two sides using the Schöck Isokorb T type Q. This is a load bearing thermal break element for transferring shear forces on supported balconies, recessed balconies and for occasional peak shear forces. The six-storey North Block features typical internal corner balconies with external corner column support and again features the Schöck Isokorb T type Q, along with the T type H for the transmission of planned horizontal forces parallel and/or perpendicular to the insulation level.

Two Isokorb types for the stone bandings - For the precast stone bandings on the project two Isokorb products were utilised. The T type F, which is a load-bearing thermal insulation element for curtain parapets and balustrades, which transfers normal forces, moments and shear forces. The T type K is also used and is a load bearing thermal break element for free cantilevered balcony construction and transfers negative moments and positive shear forces.

For Arnold Road the product had to be specially adapted and required a bespoke design 500mm in length – but supplied in 1m lengths. The precaster, Barnsley-based Con-Tech Services Ltd, then cut the Isokorb in half on site for the required detail. To avoid any clash of reinforcement, the two covers were designed and detailed with 50mm cover required on the north and south elevation and 30mm cover required on the east and west elevation.

The widest range in Europe - The fully compliant and dependable Schöck Isokorb range offers the widest selection of structural thermal break solutions from any European supplier; and in the UK enables projects to meet full compliance with the necessary Building Regulations (and the impending Future Homes Standard criteria where relevant).

In addition to the Isokorb types used on this project, there are also solutions for concrete-to-steel, steel-to-steel, renovation projects – and even a maintenance free alternative to wrapped parapets. All products have the security of independent BBA Certification, which provides NHBC approval. The temperature factor requirement (fRSI) used to indicate condensation risk, which must be equal to, or greater than 0.75 for residential buildings, is also easily met by incorporating the Isokorb. www.schoeck.com/en-gb/isokorb

Why Automated Sliding Shutters

Offer A Stunning Shading And Privacy Solution

Although still relatively rare in Britain and Ireland, horizontally sliding external shutters could play a valuable role in enabling buildings to respond to the effects of climate change and give homeowners and developers new aesthetic options.

The key benefits of this type of façade-integrated product include their potential to help control the climate inside our properties, as well as reduce the amount of glare and the risk of UV light fading interior furnishings. Interior blinds mounted on walls and window frames can help achieve these goals too, of course, as do externally mounted solar shading systems.

Bespoke sliding shutters, however, offer something very different as one outstanding luxury home project in rural Kent demonstrates.

The way that the automated sliding shutters have been incorporated into the design of Waterfield House by pH+ Architects exemplifies how they can serve a functional purpose as part of a smart building, whilst adding to the visual appeal of a residential property.

A series of external movable shutters was installed by Rundum Meir, a company usually associated only with premium bespoke garage doors.

The concept of these shutters, however, is similar to that of the company’s sliding garage door systems, which are regularly specified for unique and high-specification residential properties where the client is seeking to achieve a pleasing design and functionality.

O

The shutters are a key part of the façade of Waterfield House, which is a modern take on the traditional English country house. The client’s goal for the new property was to create a house which was bold and operated with precision, whilst being intimate and having a strong connection to its site. The façade is articulated elegantly, with large sliding glazed doors sitting behind the movable larch shutters.

These are opened and closed in line with the level of shading, ventilation and privacy required at a given time, whilst casting dappled shadows throughout the day. They deliver a unique external look, which changes throughout the day according to the position of the shutters. But there are variations inside the house too, with the shutters providing adaptability that changes the character of the interior spaces whilst allowing the house to respond sensitively to our ever-changing weather and climate.

The slick controllability offered by the shutters is ideally suited to the technologically advanced home. The expertise of Rundum Meir’s team ensured seamless integration of the shutters into a building packed with sophisticated technology, inspired by the client’s background, which means they open and close at the click of a button.

This reliable mechanisation of the shutters is something that many building facades could benefit from, not only for shading but to create spaces where occupants feel at their safest and most secure. The shifting light patterns resulting from the vertical slats also add an interesting dimension inside the home.

The vertical arrangement of the slats on the Waterfield House shutters makes them very different to sliding louvre systems, which have become a slightly more common sight here in the UK. These products can achieve similar objectives, but they wouldn’t have met the styling goals in this project.

The Rundum Meir team’s experience of working on bespoke projects – which is every single one of their client commissions – meant they could fulfil the unique requirements of the project. This included specifying the most suitable track system that would offer long term reliability and be compatible with the client’s home automation system, as well as being able to accommodate the larch slats in a way that was aesthetically consistent with the rest of the façade. www.rundum.co.uk

Athletic Stadium Win For HMG Paints

The UKs largest independent paint company HMG Paints deserves a lap of honour after a suite of its products were used to refurbish a rusting spectators stand at Plymouth athletic stadium. Rabart Decorators Centres worked with HMG Paints to provide the detailed specification needed to tackle the corroded structural steel beams of the stand. Once the area was prepared with a thorough clean to remove all loose material Ferrozinc Rust Convertor was used to tackle any remaining rust.

This was followed by a coat of HMG’s BDX Synthetic Primer, a high-build, anti-corrosive alkyd primer and then two coats of C71 Speedline, a high quality, single pack synthetic alkyd topcoat enamel. ‘We’ve worked with HMG Paints for about three years,” explained Peter Bird, Area Sales Manager for Rabart in Devon.

“Everyone using it loves the products. It’s my go-to system for jobs involving metal and offers good protection against the local environment. The products were brush and roller applied for this job although spray is also possible dependent on the situation. Rabart is one of the largest independent family firms of decorators’ merchants still

operating in the South West and South Wales. “Because we’re independent and not tied to specific manufacturers we can offer advice on the best products to use for each particular job,” says Peter. “We are pleased to welcome Rabart and Peter to the network of distributors and look forward to working with them on future projects”, says James Burton of HMG Paints.

The refurbishment of the spectators’ stand was undertaken by Plymouth-based JNE Construction on behalf of Plymouth City Council. The job completes an upgrade of the City of Plymouth Athletics Club’s Brickfields Complex which has now benefitted from a re-laid six-lane track, a new announcers hut, perimeter fencing and throwing circle. shop.hmgpaint.com

Developer Cites Commercial Benefits As Key To Selecting SterlingOSB Zero Primedplus Panels For City Centre Scheme

A multidisciplinary construction and property company based in the East Midlands has used SterlingOSB ZeroPrimedPlus, from West Fraser, for the hoardings around one of its latest residential projects, close to Derby City Centre. The company's procurement & estimating manager, Lewis Sloan, commented: "As part of the Berry Group, we offer construction and development expertise to clients ranging from homeowners to sub-contractors and property developers with tailored packages that can take a project from conception through to final completion. In the case of Slack Lane, The Berry Group is the client for a student accommodation project with 44 study bedrooms across ground, first and second floors, while Berry Construction is carrying out the work and INCO providing all the construction management and consultancy services in which we specialise.

"Over the years, we have purchased standard OSB and rollered it white before spraying on our logos using stencils or applying transfers. Then, our Travis Perkins representative brought the West Fraser product to our attention. We regard hoardings as an important part of our branding: not just for the impression it creates with the local public, but also the trade contractors and other parties who visit the site during the build programme. Not only does the SterlingOSB Zero PrimedPlus present a smarter finish, but from a visual perspective it does what the company claims and stays smart for longer and we expect we will be able to reuse most of the panels on other jobs without any redecoration unless, for example, the project sponsors change." https://uk.westfraser.com

Unique Solar Roof Tile Launched By Breedon Group Collaboration

Breedon group's new solar roof system Generon is fitted by roofing contractors. A unique solar roof tile has been launched in a collaboration by UK construction materials group Breedon. Breedon Generon is a premium whole roof concept comprising a 3.2mm monocrystalline tempered glass PV cell discreetly integrated with a

Breedon Elite 330mm x 420mm base concrete roof tile which is laid in sequence with matching standard roof tiles. Interconnecting cables then link the Generon tiles to create an overall solar output based on the number of tiles fitted. Typically, 260 tiles are required to generate a 4kW PV system - the benchmark for family homes.

Fitted by roofing contractors in an almost identical way to traditional roof tiles, the Generon system then simply connects to the remaining PV infrastructure to generate safe, reliable and renewable energy. This combination delivers a seamlessly integrated solar roof, without compromising aesthetics.

Breedon partnered with Terran, a leading European roof tile manufacturer, who over the past five years has successfully developed and distributed the Generon roof tile across Europe. Generon solar roof tiles offer a sleek and seamless design that blends in with the rest of the roof, whilst delivering high levels of performance.

They also eliminate the need for separate contractors to install solar panels and their associated mounting materials as they can be easily installed by a roofing contractor using storm clips in sequence with the standard concrete roof tiles, thus reducing the time and overall cost of installation.

Sleek and smooth in situ, the Generon system carries a 20-year performance guarantee, and has a dedicated home owner app to track real-time data about its energy production. www.breedongroup.com

Conservation Work On The Grand Parade Continues In Poole

Sensitive work to remove damaging paint from a listed building in Dorset will continue a regeneration project on one of the county’s most historic high streets. Bournemouth-based building conservation expert Gary Elford has been contracted to undertake the restoration work at the Grand Parade on Poole High Street.

The building in question is suffering from internal damp issues due to an incorrect, non-breathable paint finish being applied over the original limewash coat. Gary will be using the Doff III superheated steam cleaning system – the latest and recently-launched iteration of the iconic machine from Gloucestershire pioneers Stonehealth – to carefully remove the paint layer and expose the

original lime finish beneath. The machine uses steam at 150 degrees C to create an extremely gentle cleaning operation which preserves the integrity of historic stonework. “It’s great to be able to put the Doff III to good use,” said Gary. “The existing paintwork is totally the wrong type of finish to be used on a Grade II listed building like this, so it’s causing damp issues inside. The

Four years and a six figure sum have been invested in the development of the new machine, which features an improved, lighter, fully integrated pump requiring 50 per cent less power usage, a remote power control, an electronic temperature control system to reduce water consumption, and increased maximum hose length of 45 metres, while still achieving a steam heat of 150 degrees C at the end of the nozzle.

Angela Southern, Business Development Director at Stonehealth, said: “We care about the preservation of historic buildings and so it is important that contractors using our systems are properly trained in the right techniques and maintenance. Gary has been working with our machines for many years so we know he’ll do himself, the machine and the centre of Poole proud. ” https://stonehealth.com

Cupa Pizarras Provides Sustainable Rainscreen Cladding For

Modern Home

CUPACLAD®, a rainscreen cladding system, has recently been installed as part of a 1980s ecobungalow refurbishment in Tarporley, Cheshire. The manufacturer was selected thanks to its reputation for supplying high quality, natural products with a clear point of origin, while the cladding system also complemented the home’s sustainable ethos.

Architect Jon Moorhouse and his wife purchased the derelict bungalow with aspirations to keep the original eco-friendly design but bring it into the 21st century to create an almost zero-carbon home. As such, a second storey was added to the existing building, which was then super-insulated.

The exterior was redesigned using a recycled steel substructure, Staffordshire bricks and local green oak for parts of the cladding. Throughout the project, emphasis was placed on sourcing the highest quality materials that would blend in with the surrounding rural landscape while maintaining a contemporary design. To this endeavor, Jon sought a natural slate cladding system, as he felt it would work well with the green oak elements.

He came across CUPACLAD® slate rainscreen cladding and reached out to CUPA PIZARRAS. The team visited Jon’s architectural practice to present a CPD and discuss the project. It was soon decided that CUPACLAD® would be ideal as it could achieve all the aesthetic and sustainability requirements as both CUPACLAD® 101 and 201 systems have achieved BRE Global Verified Status and appear in the GreenBook live database.

Fully BBA approved, CUPACLAD® 201 Vanguard – the system eventually specified - is 100% noncombustible, with an A1 fire-rating, and offers a lifespan of over 100 years.

Jon Moorhouse commented: “I was looking for vertical hanging slate that would fit with the colour scheme of the house, while also contrasting with the oak elements. The design for the balcony also uses vertical cladding, so we wanted a horizontal slate to complement these lines. CUPACLAD® really helped us to achieve this vision.”

O

Simon Hope, CUPACLAD® Product Manager at CUPA PIZARRAS, explained why slate was ideal from an environmental perspective: “CUPA PIZARRAS owns its quarries, so we can extract the material ourselves, process it locally, and return to mountains any excess material that isn’t used – so this entire process has a very small impact on the local environment. While our quarries are in Spain and transportation is required, as a carbon neutral company our output is minimised and completely offset.” Ease of installation was also required.

Gavin Bailey from Sparta Cladding commented: “Overall, CUPACLAD® is a great product - easy to handle and install. The support we received from CUPA PIZARRAS was excellent and we’ve built a good relationship with the team who offered to come to site and demonstrate the best way to install the system. They were also able to supply us with resources that clearly illustrated the installation process and offered detailed design solutions that could be developed into practical site applications."

“As with most sub-grid systems, the support system is fundamental to the final installation and aesthetics of the building, this ultimately dictates the position and size of the slates. We are happy and confident in using CUPACLAD® and feel it has a good place in the market for its natural finish and ease of installation.”

Architect and property owner Jon concluded: “I would definitely recommend CUPACLAD® – partly because of the support we received from the CUPA PIZARRAS team who were in constant communication with us, providing samples and visiting the site – but also because of the system itself. We found it to be versatile and the installation was very quick –providing us with a beautiful and natural aesthetic as well as good eco credentials.” www.cupapizarras.com/uk

Power Supply Cleverly Concealed In Covent Garden

Covent Garden as we all know is a busy and successful shopping and entertainment area. The technical services team required an outdoor power supply that would not impact on the Grade 1 listed site and its important aesthetics. Pop Up Power Supplies delivered 6 retractable units for this particular site. The 450kg units are successfully buried beneath the beautifully cobbled piazza. When required they are raised by using a simple removable turning handle. They do not have a negative impact on the historical surroundings as each unit has a recessed lid created from the same cobbled stone as the rest of the piazza.

The cleverly hidden units are used throughout the year for temporary stalls and events. The area is supplied with both a combination of 16A and 32A sockets in both single and three phase, all with RCBO protection. Pop UP Power can also supply electricity with their In-ground units, that feature flip top lids and also Power Bollards in a variety of designs and specifications to suit the surroundings. www.popuppower.co.uk
