Ⅰ. Research Motivation There were two reasons that motivated me to do this research. First, since I have followed many foreign singers, actors/ actresses on Instagram, one day when I was scrolling Instagram like usual, I noticed that many foreign artists have changed their profile pictures into all black; meanwhile, they all posted the same thing— Black Lives Matter . That was the moment I

started to notice this social movement. After that, I learned more about this movement through searching the “BLM” online, and the “ George Floyd case ” impressed me the most. The photo of the scene caught my eyes at the very first moment when I saw it, making me wanna look into the movement deeply.

Ⅰ. Research Motivation Secondly, I thought Black Lives Matter is an important movement for people around the world lately, so I would like to make a report of the movement which can help me understand it clearly and better.

Ⅱ. All about BLM Definition Black Lives Matter (BLM) is a decentralized political / social movement , protesting against incidents

of police brutality and all racially motivated violence against black people . The broader movement and its

related organizations typically advocate against police violence toward black people as well as for various other policy

changes considered to be related to black liberation .

Timeline Ø February, 2012: Shooting death of Trayvon Martin Ø July, 13, 2013: BLM began on social media The movement began with the use of the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter on social media after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of African-American teen Trayvon Martin .

Ø July, 17, 2014: Death of Eric Garner Ø August, 9, 2014: Death of Michael Brown Resulting in Ferguson protests (protests and unrest in Ferguson, Missouri), and the movement became nationally recognized for the series of street demonstrations.

4

Timeline Ø May, 5, 2020: the murder of George Floyd The movement returned to national headlines and gained further international attention during the global George Floyd protests in 2020. An estimated 15 million to 26 million people participated in the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests in the United

States, making it one of the largest movements in the country's history.

5

How did the movement start on social media? This movement was launched by three cofounders, Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza, and Opal Tometi. After the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of African-American teen Trayvon Martin, Alicia Garza posted an article entitled “A Love Note to Black People”, she mentioned in the article that “Our lives matter, Black lives matter.” And Patrisse Cullors responded to the post with the hashtag “#BlackLivesMatter.” Opal Tometi added her support and a new organization was born, which is the Black Lives Matter Network .

Ⅲ. Famous Cases Michael Brown Ø Died: August 9, 2014 Ferguson, Missouri, U.S

Ø Progress: Michael Brown, an unarmed 18-year-old African-

American, was fatally shot by an American police officer Darren Wilson. Brown was accompanied by his friend Dorian Johnson at that time. According to Johnson, Wilson shot Brown multiple times until Brown fell to the ground. In the entire altercation, Wilson fired a total of twelve bullets, including twice during the struggle in the police vehicle, the last was probably the fatal shot.

8

Michael Brown Ø Related incident: This event ignited Ferguson protests (protests and unrest in Ferguson, Missouri), and the movement became nationally recognized for the series of street demonstrations. A subsequent FBI investigation found that there was no evidence that Brown had his hands up in surrender or said "don't shoot" before he was shot. However, protesters claimed that he had done so, and later used the slogan "Hands up, don't shoot."

9

Michael Brown Ø "Hands up, don't shoot" : " Hands up, don't shoot", or simply " hands up", is

a slogan and gesture originating from the incident. It was seen in demonstrations in Ferguson and throughout the United States. The gesture became a rallying cry against police violence.

(A memorial stood on the spot where Michael Brown was killed by the police in Ferguson, Mo., in 2014.)

10

George Floyd Ø Died: May, 25, 2020 Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S

Ø Progress: George Floyd , a 46-year-old black man,

was murdered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States, while being arrested on suspicion of using a counterfeit $20 bill. During the arrest, Derek Chauvin , a white police officer with the Minneapolis Police Department, knelt on Floyd's neck for nine minutes and 29 seconds after he

was handcuffed and lying face down, and that caused Floyd’s dead.

11

George Floyd Ø Related incident: George Floyd protest - Date: May 26, 2020 – present

- Causes: the murder of George Floyd

An ongoing series of protests against police brutality, police racism, and lack of police accountability in Minneapolis in the United State.

Ø “ I can't breathe” : The words said by both Eric Garner and George Floyd . This sentence then became one of the slogan of BLM movement.

Ⅳ. My Opinion When I first saw the picture of George Floyd being killed, I was impressed. That picture showed the police knelt on Floyd’s neck and back, and Floyd looked can hardly breathe. I felt breathtaking when I was reading reports about his death, and this is one of the reason motivated me to do this report. Through those cases I mentioned above, we can clearly see how African-Americans are being treated unfairly. I think it’s harrowing that we can only realize the unfairness between races still exists through people’s death. Nonetheless, luckily, people stopped watching but took the issue to the street this time, and that made those people’s sacrifices meaningful.

14

I found that the BLM not only focus on the police brutality towards the blacks, but they also commits to diversity and inclusion of all black people. Like what they said on their website, “ We affirm the lives of Black queer and trans folks, disabled folks, undocumented folks, folks with records, women, and all Black lives along the gender spectrum.” I hope that this movement can prompt more and more people to pay attention to the issue of racism and combat the brutality together. To sum up, let’s build a whole new world with peace and love by putting ourselves in

other’s shoes, and take action to make this world better.
