The designers of Vialog / Die Designer der Vialog / Les créateurs de la Vialog: Helmut Ness and Prof. Werner Schneider

Vialog is based on a normally proportioned transportation typeface that Professor Werner Schneider designed as 'Euro Type' for the German Federal Transportation Ministry in 1988. Behind its forms are comprehensive studies of the legibility of European transportation typefaces regarding their optimization and standardization. Prof. Schneider worked with Helmut Ness of the design agency Fuenfwerken to give the typeface a new look. The main idea was to create a space-saving text typeface that could be used in the challenging field of transportation and information typography, but also fulfill the requirements of a corporate typeface. In spite of the relatively robust forms, Vialog remains an aesthetic and legible type-face due to its detail and quality. It is not just technical, rather, a typeface family which meets high visual and design expectations.

Die Vialog ist aus einer normal proportionierten Verkehrsschrift hervorgegangen, die Prof. Werner Schneider 1988 als »Euro Type« für das Bundesverkehrsministerium in Bonn konzipierte. Ihr lagen umfangreiche lesetechnische Untersuchungen zu Grunde hinsichtlich der Optimierung und Vereinheitlichung europäischer Verkehrsschriften. In Zusammenarbeit mit Helmut Ness vom Wiesbadener Designbüro Fuenfwerken erhielt dieser Vorläufer ein neues Outfit. Die Intension lag wesentlich darin, eine platzsparende Satzschrift zu erzielen, die dem schwierigen Feld der Verkehrsbeschriftung bzw. Informations-Typografie voll Rechnung trägt und ebenso den heutigen vielseitigen Anforderungenen an eine Corporate-Schrift erfüllt. Trotz des relativ robusten Schriftbildes überzeugt die Vialog auf Grund ihrer ästhetischen Ausformung und ihrer lesetechnischen Detailqualität. Sie ist kein technisches Konstrukt, sondern eine nach hohen visuellen Ansprüchen konzipierte Schriftfamilie. Prof. Werner Schneider

La Vialog tire son origine d’une police de signalisation aux proportions normales créée par professeur Werner Schneider en 1988 sous la désignation « Euro Type » pour le compte du ministère des transports allemand à Bonn. Cette police repose sur de vastes études de la technique de lecture pour l’optimisation et la standardisation des polices européennes de signalisation et d’information. En collaboration avec Helmut Ness de l’agence Fuenfwerken de Wiesbaden en Allemagne, ce prédécesseur a été redessiné. L’objectif consistait principalement à obtenir une police typographique prenant moins de place tout en tenant pleinement compte des difficultés typographiques de la signalisation et de l’information ainsi que des nombreux critères très divers imposés aujourd’hui à toute police du type Corporate Type. Malgré cette impression relative de robustesse, la Vialog ne manque pas de convaincre par sa forme esthétique et sa qualité au niveau des détails lorsqu’il s’agit de la technique de lecture. Cette police n’est donc aucunement un produit synthétique ou technique mais, au contraire, une famille conçue en fonction de critères visuels très sévères.

The forms of the numerals were designed for the unmistakable transmission of important information. The numerals of Vialog distinguish themselves through their clarity and uniqueness. The silhouettes of the 6 and the 9 are particularly remarkable in this respect. Die Formgebung der Ziffern ist für eine unmissverständliche Information von überragender Bedeutung. Die Zahlen der Vialog zeichnen sich durch Eindeutigkeit und Unverwechselbarkeit zu ihren Nachbarfiguren aus. Dazu tragen insbesondere die Silhouetten von 6 und 9 bei. La forme des chiffres est d’une importance capitale pour une information sans équivoque. Les chiffres de la Vialog sont caractérisés par l’absence de toute ambiguïté et l’exclusion de toute possibilité de confusion avec les caractères voisins. Les silhouettes des chiffres 6 et 9 y contribuent tout particulièrement.

Tests show that even with extremely blurred characters, individual figures can still be identified due to the carefully designed details. For instance, there is enough space between an r and a following n so that the two figures are not mistaken for an m. The large white spaces of the letters prevent such mistakes even in poor reading conditions.

Der Härtetest zeigt, dass selbst bei extremer Unschärfe jede Einzelfigur auf Grund ihrer lesetechnischen Detailqualität noch eindeutig identifiziert werden kann. Beispielsweise grenzt sich das r vom nachfolgenden n genügend ab, um nicht als m wahrgenommen zu werden. Die großen Öffnungen der Buchstaben beugen Verwechslungen bei weniger guten Lesebedingungen vor.

Le test le plus sévère, à savoir un flou extrême, révèle clairement que chaque caractère peut encore être identifié sans équivoque par suite de la qualité des détails au niveau de la technique de lecture. The italic forms of Vialog are not simply the slanted forms of the roman, rather, were individually designed. A graphically balanced typeface results from the reduced weight of curve ends and lightly arched outline of the straight strokes. Die kursiven Formen der Vialog sind nicht die auf technischem Wege geneigten Grundformen der Schrift, sondern wurden individuell gezeichnet. Ein grafisch ausgewogenes Schriftbild wird durch die verjüngenden Bildfetten der einmündenden Rundungen und eine Kehlung an den Geraden gefördert. Les italiques de la Vialog ne sont pas simplement les formes de base traitées pour obtenir des caractères inclinés mais une création individuelle. Cette harmonie graphique du caractère est accentuée par les graisses rajeunissantes des arrondis et une courbe à la droite.

The key figure S is an outstanding example of the organically dynamic form concept of Vialog. The human eye perceives the balanced weight of its strokes as exceptionally legible compared with purely constructed forms. Die Schlüsselfigur S zeigt sehr deutlich das organisch dynamische Formkonzept der Vialog mit seinen ausgewogenen Bildfetten, die das menschliche Auge als besonders lesefreundlich empfindet gegenüber einer rein konstruierten Form. Radgenpobs Vialog distinguishes itself by a large x-height combined with relatively small ascenders and descenders, which results in relaxed and highly legible texts.

The typeface has already passed its first tests in the Munich area. The example shows that Vialog is also outstanding when condensed (here 95%).

Die Münchener Verkehrsgesellschaft setzt die Vialog erstmals für sämtliche Anwendungsbereiche, intern – extern, als Infound Corporate-Schrift gleichermaßen ein. Im Großraum München hat sie bereits ihre Bewährungsprobe in vielfältiger Weise bestanden. Das Beispiel zeigt, dass sich die Vialog auch vorzüglich zur Kondensierung (hier 95%) eignet.
