Austria is far more than Mozartkugel chocolates and Lipizzaner horses. Did you know that Austria also has a UNESCO City of Media Arts to offer – the city of Linz? This creative city on the Danube reflects Austria‘s modernity. to contemporary history. For centuries, the Danube in Linz was by turns a dividing line and a connecting link between the cultures and regions on its banks. The river stands for highly dramatic, terrible and joyful events. Linz lies at the heart of Europe, and at the centre of the European Region Danube-Vltava. From here, you can reach the Czech Republic and Germany in a very short time. Visit three countries, as well as several national parks and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Linz lies between the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Hallstatt-Dachstein and the small historical city of Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic. Great Bruckner in Great Britain. There‘s also a genuine piece of the United Kingdom in Linz. After all, the most modern opera house in Europe was designed by a London architect. The International Bruckner Festival, dedicated to the famous Upper Austrian composer Anton Bruckner, also has connections with Great Britain. Bruckner performed his works in the Royal Albert Hall as early as 1871. In addition, the renowned Bruckner Orchester will be going on tour around Great Britain from 21 to 25 April 2016, stopping in London, Edinburgh, Middlesbrough and Warwick. Discover cultural delights, media arts, contemporary history and restful relaxation in Austria‘s pulsating modernity. Find new perspectives on Europe.

The forest We are so comes to the city! UNESCO During the war, a father from the Bohemian Forest fears for the safety of his two daughters and so he takes them to a house hidden in an untouched forest. Nevertheless, the hiding place is discovered by a young man, who is in love with one of the girls. Against the backdrop of this romantic story by Adalbert Stifter from 1842 about the forest, innocence and the pursuit of safety, the focus is on the future of nature. Gripping natural theatre about paradise and its loss, translated by Joey Wimplinger into the urban landscape and cityscape of Linz.
The city’s designation as a UNESCO City of Media Arts in December 2014 is another milestone paving the way for Linz to become the creative centre of Europe. It shows that Linz, together with Lyon, Sapporo, Tel Aviv and Dakar, is one of the world’s most future-orientated locations. The highlights are Ars Electronica Center – a gravitational centre for technological pioneering and visionary media arts – with its annual festival in September and the renowned Prix Ars Electronica. www.cityofmediaarts.at

POST CITY
at the Ars Electronica Festival 2015 This year, the motto for Ars Electronica is “Living spaces for the 21st century“.
“POST CITY“ at the Ars Electronica Festival Festival 2015 From 3 to 7 September, international experts will discuss the future of cities. On 100,000 m2 in the centre of Linz‘s train station grounds, the former post and package distribution centre will be
temporarily converted into the festival venue and a city laboratory. What will our cities look like in the future, when more robots than people work in the factories, post is delivered by drones, and cars drive themselves? What kind of an effect will climate change have on future megacities?
Free tours of the Post City have already begun this spring. The tours last about an hour and a half and take visitors through the enormous mail distribution centre. Registration at tickets@aec.at www.aec.at/postcity/en

Oh,that‘s beautiful FASHION AT THE MUSEUM SHOPPING IN THE CITY CENTRE
www.powderpuff.at
The clothes make the people If you want to give your beauty some new flair, you’ll have plenty of opportunity while shopping in the numerous shops in Linz’s city centre. “It’s all vanity”, the artists and thinkers of the baroque period complained about futile human attempts to oppose transience with something lasting. The most influential creatives of the 1980s also indulged in exactly the same melancholy
6
attitude to life a few centuries later. Fashion designers began to see themselves as artists and to place harsh everyday life in the glittering, glamorous world of haute couture. Shopping in Linz Shopping and finding beautiful things should be part of a city trip, and allow us to immerse ourselves in the city and the culture of the country.
In addition to interesting shops, visitors to Linz also find relaxation and pleasure for the body and the mind. The lovely atmosphere of Linz City encourages you to stroll around and try things, and wander along Landstraße and the side streets with their numerous small shops. Let yourself be tempted by design, regional delicacies, something new for your home or fashionable brands. www.linzer-city.at

Nowhere else do the transient moment and eternity come so close as in fashion: Make-up, a ball hairstyle and an evening dress are only worn for a few hours – but they are often timelessly beautiful.

The Myth of Beauty Aspects of beauty in nature, art and society in the Schlossmuseum from 6 May to 29 November 2015 The Myth of Beauty exhibition in the Schlossmuseum demonstrates that beauty does not always have to be unflawed and harmonious. After all, beauty has many facets – whether it is found in nature or art, in culture or in the midst of society.
The large overview ranging from the golden mean, to the aesthetic tastes of the 19th century, to the artistic figure and Song Contest winner Conchita Wurst, shows how our perception of beauty is constantly changing. www.landesmuseum.at

His basic idea of „an extended living room for the population of Linz“, the integration of the building into city life and its unification with the park in front of it were implemented in the construction with great success. The Musiktheater, situated directly by Volksgarten at the end of Landstraße, the shopping street, also houses the restaurant Das Anton, named after the internationally renowned Upper Austrian composer Anton Bruckner, with the culinary accompaniment of star chef Toni Mörwald. In a construction period of four years, a new cultural landmark was created in the city. The core element is the 32-metre transportable revolving stage. The Musiktheater can accommodate more than 1,800 spectators and is currently the most modern
opera house in Europe. Tours of the building with a look behind the scenes and an interactive sound foyer, which is open daily and was designed by Ars Electronica Center, open new perspectives for visitors and allow them to experience the essence of this location. The divisions of opera/operetta, ballet, the newly established musical division, which is unique in Europe, and the Bruckner Orchester Linz have found their new home here. International guest performances, concerts offering classical, world and jazz music, as well as recitals, readings, tours and exhibitions round off the comprehensive programme. www.landestheater-linz.at/en www.bruckner-orchester.at

Great Bruckner in Great Britain The first musical connections between Anton Bruckner and London were created as early as 1871, when the Upper Austrian composer performed works by Bach, Handel and Mendelssohn as well as his own improvisations in the Royal Albert Hall.
Anton Bruckner was born in 1824 in Ansfelden, Upper Austria. From 1837 to 1840, he was a choirboy, and from 1845 to 1855, both a teacher and a temporary organist at St. Florian’s Priory. www.brucknerhaus.at

VALIE EXPORT.
VALIE EXPORT Her first experience of architecture was also as a child. It was the Tabakfabrik with its huge clock that fascinated children so much.
“I had my first artistic experience in Linz.” Did you know that Alfred Kubin was the very first muse of the internationally renowned media and performance artist VALIE EXPORT? “As a young girl, I had my first artistic experience – a work by Kubin – on a visit to a museum in Linz with my mother”, the 75-year-old explains.
10
An exhibition that will provide insights into the archive with its artwork, sketches, drafts, negatives and other extensive archive material could take place as early as 2016. Intelligent archive VALIE EXPORT herself speaks of a “pioneering achievement from us all and for us all. It’s about what we were thinking back then, and we must research what was going on at that time.” Lentos director Stella Rollig is enthusiastic: “I have never seen such a careful and intelligent archive as that of VALIE EXPORT.” VALIE EXPORT has been one of Austria’s most internationally important artists for
decades. Her career began at the end of the 1960s through the sensation caused by exciting campaigns in public space – from a feminist perspective. In 1967 she invented her artist’s name VALIE EXPORT as an artistic concept and logo.
Photo: VALIE EXPORT © Herta Hurnaus
A return to Linz Around 70 years later, the artist returns to her roots with her archive, which will now be included in the collection of Lentos Kunstmuseum on the occasion, among others, of the city’s designation as a UNESCO City of Media Arts. The future VALIE EXPORT Center, an international research centre for media and the performing arts, will be located on an area of 320 m2 in the Tabakfabrik Linz. On 1 June, the development phase will begin, and the VALIE EXPORT Center is expected to be in regular operation from 2017.
NICK IS PINK!
Nick Treadwell More than a little crazy! Nick Treadwell (78) is an art collector and gallery owner. His adopted home is Aigen im Mühlkreis in Upper Austria. His art gallery is situated in the municipality‘s former courthouse and prison building. Nick has been a patron of fine art for about 50 years. Around 600 works of art hang permanently on every wall and in every corner of his gallery.

“Linz openminded & friendly“
Pink is Nick Treadwell‘s trademark. Upper Austria has now been the adopted home for the extravagant art collector and gallery owner from the UK for 15 years. The shrill, provocative Briton explains in this interview why he finds Linz open-minded and friendly. Your exhibition was called Wow. What is the wow factor in Linz for you? It’s interesting how Linz is developing and has developed. Linz lies on the beautiful Danube, and is quite a young city. There’s a really good cultural scene here. Linz’s location in Europe is very central, and the connections via the airport and by train are also good. The Austrians understand my pink philosophy. The people of Linz are openminded. I would like to relocate my gallery from the Mühlviertel to Linz. That would be the next logical step for me. What kind of opportunity do you see for Linz with its designation as a UNESCO City of Media Arts? It depends on what you make of it. It seems to me that it could be something useful and valuable for Linz. But I don’t think that media arts are everything. It’s just the modern thing, and in Linz
we also have NORDICO Stadtmuseum, the Landesmuseum and Lentos Kunstmuseum in addition to the fantastic Ars Electronica Center with its media arts. It’s important to me that art triggers a reaction in people. Children need balance – it doesn’t trouble me that they see the world through a smartphone, but the important thing is that they see the world. Children must also go to exhibitions to see a painting or a sculpture. And to experience art. How do you find the cultural scene in Linz? Of course, there is less cultural activity in Linz than in London or Vienna, but the Linz cultural scene is youthful, intense and developing very fast. There is a large and ambitious cultural community in the city, which is not only very active, but also very supportive of all that is going on. I have great expectations for the cultural future of the city.

High-born ladies and gentlemen, beginning with the Romans, to the Habsburgs under their Empress Elisabeth of Austria (SISI) always travelled by water, primarily because transport by land was very arduous due to the lack of maintained roads. Today, travellers have it much easier: If you want to travel in comfort, you can do this in style, for example on a Danube boat from Regensburg, Passau, Linz or Vienna or you can use the various rail services along the Danube. If you would rather travel in the open air at a relaxed pace, you can hike on the Donausteig long-distance hiking trail (www.donausteig.com/en) between Passau and Grein or cycle on the popular Danube Cycle Path (www.donauregion.at/ en), which also begins in Germany, goes right through Linz and continues on to Budapest.
A change of perspective In Linz, the Danube curves and changes direction. „Lentos“ and „Lentia“ are the Celtic and Roman names for Linz. Both refer to the river‘s change of course. Today, Linz is a symbiosis as an industrial, cultural and international city of media arts. Linz has a transformative power. A trip on a Danube boat opens new perspectives, and is relaxing and refreshing both during the day and the evening, on tours with culinary delights and music. Tip: The harbour tour on the Danube takes you to a unique harbour gallery and begins between 1 May and 4 October every day except Monday at 11.00 am, 1.00 pm and 3.00 pm from Lentos pier. It lasts 100 minutes and we recommend that you enjoy a slice of the famous Linzer Torte on board! www.donauschiffahrt.de/en

Mural Harbor.
The world’s largest outdoor gallery planned in Linz harbour. Be inspired by oversized graffiti artwork on a boat trip on the Danube.
Photo: Hafengalerie © Philipp Greindl, flap.at
Experience the oversized paintings of international spray-paint artists and graffiti artists from eight different countries. You can currently admire 20 large-scale pictures on the facades of old industrial buildings and house walls. The Spanish street artist ARYZ has immortalised himself in Linz with his 30 x 15 metre mural on a warehouse in Hafenbecken 2. His style is an impressive inspiration for the scene. ARYZ’s tools include a roller and brush in addition to the spray can. Mural Harbor The outdoor gallery Mural Harbor is gradually transforming the commercial port into an urban area for art in a public space: As part of Bubble Days, international street artists and graffiti artists have regularly been invited to Linz in
recent years: ROA from Belgium has painted his characteristic, large-scale animals at the harbour. STOHEAD from Berlin is responsible for the oversized calligraphy letters that adorn the facades. On over 500 square metres, he has translated characters and calligraphy into the spray-paint language. Classic graffiti by ZORES from Linz, among others, can also be seen. Austria’s only shipyard In addition to the oversized artwork, you can also discover Austria’s only shipyard on your harbour tour. Enjoy a slice of Linzer Torte on your return, past the beautiful natural landscapes and the Culture Mile with Lentos Kunstmuseum, Ars Electronica Center and the Brucknerhaus. www.bubbledays.at I www.boxxoffice.at

Linz: A focus on contemporary history If you want to immerse yourself in the history of Linz, then 2015 – a memorial year for the city – is an ideal time to visit. Several historical events will be commemorated this year in the city of peace: the end of the Second World War in 1945, 60 years since the Austrian State Treaty was signed and the reunification of the two city districts Linz and Urfahr, and 20 years since Austria entered the European Union.
