Our tips for a change in Linz In Linz, change is fundamental. The Danube’s change of course gave the city its name: Lentos (Celtic for curved, bending) from which the Roman fort Lentia derives. Progress and change shape the interplay of history, present, and future, which can be felt here in the culture, quality of life, and business. It is a positive change experienced by visitors and locals alike, since “They must often change, who would be constant in happiness or wisdom”, according to Confucius. Linz offers many opportunities to experience this change within yourself and in your surroundings. Allow yourself to be surprised and take the “wind of change” home with you.

Around Linz are Pleschingersee, Weikerlsee, and Pichlingersee, and swimming from the banks located in Urfahr of the Danube is also permitted. All lakes are accessible via public transport.

In addition to the Danube Cycle Path, Linz and its surroundings are the perfect location for cycling tours. World-class art by the Danube Herbert Bayer, forum metall, and Peter Behrens The Donaupark in Linz, with its buildings and sculptures, allows you to follow the tracks of world-famous artists of the Bauhaus school and modern architecture. Here, you’ll encounter the works of greats like Herbert Bayer and Peter Behrens. With its collection and building, Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz is the starting point for this exploration. Designed by the Zurich architects Weber & Hofer, the museum, which is impressive in its simplicity and forms part of the city skyline with the nightly illumination of its glass facade, has already become an emblem of Linz. As a result of a generous donation from the estate of his widow, Joella Bayer, in 2006, the Lentos Kunstmuseum now has 135 works from all periods of Bayer’s work, the largest Bayer collection of any Austrian museum. The Bauhaus artist, born in Haag am Hausruck (1900), apprenticed under Georg Schmidthammer in his applied arts studio. He always remained connected to the place of his childhood and for this reason, was keen

to contribute to the forum metall project. forum metall was founded in 1977 by Helmuth Gsöllpointner, then a professor at the University of Arts and Industrial Design Linz, and Peter Baum, at that time the head of the Neue Galerie der Stadt Linz; the project took the form of a public park with sculptures by national and international artists. The aim was to connect art and business, and through this cooperation, to point to Linz’s significant role as an industrial location and an up-and-coming art metropolis. Artists of international standing were invited to create large-format sculptures for the Donaupark. All the works were designed specially for Linz and produced in Austrian companies. In this unique collaboration between art and business, it was possible to produce an in-

comparable open-air ensemble of modern art. The striking works by Bayer, Paolozzi, Uecker, etc. were newly presented for Linz09 with a subtle lighting display by Rolf Derrer. If you look from the artwork towards the city centre, you’ll recognise another building that dominates the city skyline: the Tabakfabrik Linz. This was designed by the Bauhaus pioneer Peter Behrens and completed by his assistant Alexander Popp. Behrens, who worked with Le Corbusier, the great Bauhaus artist, among others, is regarded as a trailblazer of industrial design, and the Tabakfabrik Linz as one of his most impressive industrial buildings. The building, which is now owned by the city, is used as an event and cultural centre in the heart of Linz.

NORDICO Stadtmuseum Linz houses an extensive collection of art, photography, archaeology, and folklore. The building is an interconnected, lively, and educational facility for storytelling and innovative museum work, and stands for Linz’s identity in the context of the city’s history.

The Biology Centre in Linz-Dornach, which is run by the Upper Austrian Provincial Museums, collects, preserves, researches, documents, and conveys knowledge about the animal and plant kingdoms, and about rocks and minerals. It is the largest natural history collection of the province and presents a variety of constantly changing special exhibitions on an area of 200 m2. Equally well worth seeing is the one-hectare Ecopark, which contains plants and trees native to the region.

Today, it is the main museum of the Upper Austrian Provincial Museums, and was also called “Francisco-Carolinum”. It was built until 1895, according to the plans of the Berlin architect Bruno Schmitz. Today, the Landesgalerie is the museum for Upper Austrian modern and contemporary art. The collection of Landesgalerie Linz includes around 100 paintings, sculptures, and installations, as well as the world’s largest collection of works by the Austrian illustrator and

In the rooms of the former residence of Adalbert Stifter (1805–1868), the StifterHaus unites the Adalbert Stifter Institute, a research station for literature and linguistics, and the OÖ Literaturhaus under one roof. Here you can, for example, see the original manuscript of Stifter’s Witiko (written 1865– 1867).

Here, you can follow the development of dentistry, from a primitive dentist’s chair of the 17th century and the foot-powered drill, to the very first unit for working on patients while they are lying down (1960).

In this building, which served as the valley station for the Pöstlingbergbahn until the beginning of 2008, a museum has been set up to document the story of this historical railway.

For 2009, the year that Linz was the European Capital of Culture, the Salzamt was renovated by the City of Linz and equipped with artists’ studios. Now, it is a place of international artist exchange. The studios are available for artists to use as a basis and workshop for the development of their creative work. In the 170-m2 exhibition room on the ground floor of the Salzamt, works produced in Linz are exhibited. Lectures, discussions, presentations, and other events also take place here. As part of the Open Studio Days, the studios are opened several times a year to give art lovers an insight into the everyday life of the artists. Visits to the studios can also be booked by schools as part of art education.

The opening on April 11, 2013 of the Musiktheater – Europe’s most modern opera house, designed by the famous architect Terry Pawson – marked the beginning of a new era in Linz. Each year, Linz’s Posthof cultural centre presents about 250 individual musical, dance, theatrical, cabaret, and literary events – and is both an artistic hub for (inter)national greats and a platform for presenting new young (home-grown) talent. Originally a branch of the old Linz post office, the site in the harbour district was converted in 1984 and 1990, and is today one of the largest and most vibrant contemporary culture venues in Austria.

Stadtpfarrkirche

www.stadtpfarre-linz.at This building, which is still the seat of the Mayor and City Council of Linz, combines modern architecture with historical finds, such as artistically chiselled Gothic handicraft work or a Biedermeier-period painting. The arcaded inner courtyard beckons with its idyllic garden restaurant and the unusual museum of dentistry. In the entrance area are plaques portraying four famous figures from Linz. Martinskirche

You may know the phrase: Bella gerant alii, tu felix Austria nube or Others may wage wars, you happy Austria, marry! In accordance with this maxim, Anna, the later heiress of Bohemia and Hungary, married Archduke Ferdinand here in the Stadtpfarrkirche almost 500 years ago. Today’s baroque church still displays structural elements from the Roman and Gothic periods. The heart and internal organs of Emperor Friedrich III are buried here. TIP for pilgrims: the statue of St. Jacob.

Kremsmünstererhaus One of the oldest churches in Austria. Inside, excavated Roman inscription stones and a Roman furnace await you. Another famous feature is the copy of the Volto Santo picture, which originally came from Lucca in Italy.

You’ll find the former town residence of the famous Kremsmünster Abbey in the Alter Markt in the Old Town. According to the legend, Emperor Friedrich III died here (1493). Today, it accommodates a modern restaurant with a wonderful garden dining area. Altstadt 10, 4020 Linz

Jesuitenkirche 17 Linzer Schloss (Old Cathedral) www.ignatiuskirche-linz.at Built by the Jesuits from 1669 to 1683 according to plans by P. F. Carlone, it became the Bischofskirche (Cathedral) when Joseph II made Linz a diocese. In 1909, the Jesuits returned. The Jesuitenkirche stands at the southern end of Hauptplatz, next to the former Jesuit College. Anton Bruckner held the post of organist here from 1856 to 1868. The organ was converted in accordance with plans drawn up by Anton Bruckner and has been preserved in that state up to the present day. The Bruckner Stairway, a memorial in honour of the great musician, leads up to the organ. More information on page 60

Hauptplatz and Trinity Column

The imposing 20-metre-high Trinity Column, which was completed in 1723, is made of whitemarble. A typical symbol of the baroque period, it was built out of gratitude for having survived catastrophes, and as a protection against war, fire, and plague. The column stands in the middle of Linz’s Hauptplatz that, with an area of about 13,200 m2, has been one of Europe’s largest enclosed squares since the 13th century. As a marketplace, Hauptplatz soon helped the city to achieve its economic recovery. TIP: Listen to the sounds of the Glockenspiel. Depending on the season, you’ll be entertained with Christmas carols, the national anthem, or masterpieces by Mozart, Haydn, or Bruckner!

In a deed of gift from the time of Charles the Great, the “castle at Linz” and Martinskirche are mentioned for the first time in 799. Emperor Friedrich III resided here until his death in 1493. Today, you can still admire the defensive walls of his castle, the bastions, and the Friedrichstor gate bearing the inscription A.E.I.O.U. (which assumedly stands for Alles Erdreich ist Österreichs Untertan or All the Earth is subject to Austria). The Emperor designated Linz the provincial capital, as the temporary centre of the Habsburg Empire. Then, in the 17th century, under Rudolf II, the castle which today houses the Schlossmuseum was built. The great citywide fire of 1800 destroyed the south wing, which was reconstructed in a modern steel and glass architectural design and opened to the public in 2009, the year that Linz was the European Capital of Culture. Austria’s largest universal museum in one location can be found here. TIP: On the terrace, you can see the world’s second-largest cast-iron model city! More information on page 24

Mozarthaus

In this Renaissance building from the second half of the 16th century, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed the Linz Symphony and the Linz Sonata in only three days. At the entrance to the house, you’ll find a bust of Mozart as well as a sound installation, which plays the beginning of the famous symphony. The Mozarthaus can only be viewed from outside. Landhaus

This magnificent Renaissance building was built in the 16th century on the site of the Minorite monastery and is today the seat of the governor, the provincial parliament, and the provincial government of Upper Austria. The lower storeys of the tower were constructed in 1568, and it was built up to its present height in 1638. It’s possible to climb it on special city walking tours. Don’t miss the Italian-style arcaded courtyard with its Planets Fountain. Johannes Kepler taught here, at the Protestantische Landschaftsschule, a Protestant Latin school for young nobles, for 14 years. Landhausplatz 1, 4020 Linz

Martin Luther Kirche

www.linz-evang.at In Linz’s only church in the genuine Rococo style, you’ll discover stuccowork by Kaspar Modler, as well as a high altar painting by Bartolomeo Altomonte. The side altar pictures were painted by Martin Johann Schmidt (“Kremser Schmidt”). Originally, the church belonged to the Minorite monastery founded in 1236. Thanks to the Patent of Tolerance issued by Emperor Joseph II in 1781, the Protestant faith was once more allowed in Upper Austria; however, it was not until 20 October 1844 that the first house of prayer in Linz could be ceremoniously dedicated. In accordance with the Catholic building regulations then in force, the Protestant church building had to be set back 50 metres from the road to avoid dominating the appearance of the street. Take a look at the wonderful stained-glass windows, such as the Linzer Fenster or the Kaiserfenster. The inner gallery, which is accessible on special tours, offers fascinating views of the church interior from a height of 15 metres. Also highly recommended are the guided tours of the tower, from which you can enjoy a magnificent view of Linz. The tours are also very suitable for families and children aged 5 and upwards. TIP: Use the Mariendom and the other churches as havens of tranquillity. On a shopping expedition in the lively city of Linz, Austria’s largest church offers a place of quiet and relaxation.

Due to its steel frame construction, its size (with a floor space of approx. 80,000 m2), and its functionality down to the smallest details, this industrial edifice, built from 1929 to 1935 by the internationally acclaimed architect Prof. Peter Behrens, is today regarded as a monument of modern European industrial architecture.

Johannes Kepler (1571–1630) Keplerhaus 15 Johannes Kepler, the famous German theologian, mathematician, astronomer, astrologer, and optician, lived in Linz from 1612 to 1627 and completed one of his chief works in this house at Rathausgasse 5 – the Rudolphine Tables. From 1745 onwards, the first printing press in Linz was located here. In 2009, the Kepler Salon, a place of encounter, exchange of information, and the sharing of knowledge, was established on the first floor of the house. Universities, various educational institutions, and hospitals organise a wide variety of events here. Landhaus with the Planets Fountain 23

Johannes Kepler taught here, at the Protestantische Landschaftsschule, a Protestant Latin school for young nobles, for 14 years. In the exquisite arcaded courtyard you’ll find the Planets Fountain. More information on page 42

This institution is the oldest public library in Linz and houses manuscripts, fragments, and early printed works, including approx. 360 medieval manuscripts and approx. 30,000 rare printed works from the libraries of former Upper Austrian abbeys, now closed. Among these is also an entry in Kepler’s own handwriting (autograph), with a picture of Johannes Kepler from his time in Linz as the Mathematician of His Imperial Majesty and the Provincial Estates of Upper Austria (1621), recorded in the family chronicle of Stephanus Lansius/Tübingen.

The Stifter experience in Upper Austria:

Barbara-Friedhof The poet and educationist has his final resting place at this cemetery in Linz. The granite obelisk that stands here indicates the key points in his Biographica Literaria – like the obelisk on Plöckenstein, the wonderful natural setting of Stifter’s Der Hochwald and Witiko.

Stifter-Villa In Kirchschlag near Linz, you’ll find the atmospheric villa where Stifter stayed to undergo a health treatment seven times between 1865 and 1867. Other places associated with Stifter in Upper Austria, Bavaria, and the Czech Republic are Ulrichsberg, Wegscheid, Kollerschlag, and Horní Planá.

Stifter Statue The Stifter memorial stands on the Promenade. This location was chosen because, during his years of service as a schools inspector, he looked out onto this street from his office in the Statthalterei, a crownland administration building. On 24 May 1902, the life-sized bronze memorial designed by Johann (Hans) Rathausky was unveiled – the poet is sitting on a granite rock, specially brought here from the Bohemian Forest, with his hat and coat by his side.

Stifter Museum Schwarzenberg “My whole soul is attached to this region...” A visit here gives an overview of Stifter’s life, literary works, and artwork. The highlights of the presentation include the world’s one and only Stifter hologram, a satellite view of the Ride of Witiko, and the prize-winning design for a Stifter memorial in Linz by Othmar Schimkowitz (1900). Adalbert Stifter Panorama Trail (4.5 km) The hiking trail in St. Stefan is a round trail that gives walkers an insight into the creative work and the home country of the artist. The Panorama Trail is the first trail in the region to have signposts in two languages. In clear weather, this trail offers a vast view of the hilly landscape of the Mühlviertel region, the Alps, and the hill ridge of the Bohemian Forest, the home region of Adalbert Stifter.

Nature lovers will be enthralled by the beauty of the heath moor landscape. Stifterweg Witiko Trail (Schwarzenberg section: 10.7 km; 4.5 hrs) You’ll find the precise route taken by the trail, starting from Oberschwarzenberg, at: www.boehmerwald.at Adalbert Stifter Trail (46 km) The Adalbert Stifter Trail begins in Wegscheid, Bavaria, and leads over the border to Austria (Kollerschlag, Ulrichsberg). From Ulrichsberg, the trail leads up to Hintenberg, Moldaublick, Sonnenwald, along the Schwarzenberg Canal/Švarcenberský plavební kanál to the border crossing at Schöneben. In the Czech Republic, the hiking route runs via Zadni Zvonková. You can reach the town of Stifter’s birth, Horní Planá, by taking a ferry over the Lipno reservoir. Anton Bruckner (1824–1896) www.linz.at/bruckner Josef Anton Bruckner, born in Ansfelden near Linz, was an Austrian Romantic composer, as well as an organist and music teacher. Though he was not appreciated as a composer by his contemporaries until later in life, he was still one of the most important and most innovative composers of his day, whose works had a great influence on the history of music until well into the 20th century. His most important, and certainly bestknown, compositions are his expansively structured symphonies. He also enriched sacred music with some important works, including three full-length masses and a Te Deum. As an organist, he was admired for his improvisations, above all. Historical Bruckner Organ in the Old Cathedral 17 The organ was converted in accordance with plans by Anton Bruckner and has been preserved up to the present day. Concerts and guided tours are held here, presenting the only surviving “original Bruckner instrument”.

Bruckner Stairway, a memorial in honour of the composer all along the steps leading up to his organ. Here, you can learn more about the life and work of the great Linz maestro through presentation boards and samples of his music. More information on page 41 Geocaching.com Embark on a treasure hunt, following the trail of Anton Bruckner by means of geocaching. Armed with a GPS-enabled device (iPhone, GPS-enabled mobile phone, GPS device, etc.), you can set off on a search for the hidden clue boxes. Memorials You can find any number of Anton Bruckner memorials in Linz, e.g. the portrait relief in the Old Cathedral, the medallion on the Stadtpfarrkirche, the busts in the Donaupark in front of the Brucknerhaus, the commemorative plaque at Hofgasse 23, the stone relief in the Altes Rathaus, and many more besides. The Romans in Linz

Ancient Linz: LENTIA on the Danube limes Linz was part of the Roman Empire for 500 years. At its largest, the settlement of LENTIA exceeded the later medieval town in size. Despite the lack of visible monuments here, traces of its rich Roman past have been discovered at over 100 sites.

At the crossing point of prehistoric longdistance trade routes, craftspeople already settled on Römerberg around 20 AD. A short time later, Roman soldiers built a first military camp here. Thus, LENTIA became the location of a Roman cavalry unit and part of the Noric limes. The civil settlement of the 2nd to 3rd centuries extended from Römerberg and through the Old Town, and from the bank of the Danube to Spittelwiese. At the foot of Schlossberg, there was an ancient sacred place, a cult site where the oriental deity Mithras was worshipped. A replica of the Mithraeum can be viewed today in the LinzGenesis museum. A burial ground of Late Antiquity on the slopes of Römerberg was still being used until well into the 5th century, the time of Saint Severin. Today, the influence of Roman culture can still be felt in our daily life. DANUBE LIMES World Heritage Site: “Borders of the Roman Empire” The land or river boundaries of the Imperium Romanum, called in Latin limes or ripa, cover a distance of over 5,500 kilometres, running through and connecting many modern countries on three continents. They constitute a unique archaeological ground monument of international importance, whose first segments were designated a multinational World Heritage Site by the UNESCO Commission in 2005. Along the Austrian section of the limes, too, the numerous military camps and guard posts, testimonies to a history of almost 500 years, still shape the Austrian cultural landscape along the Danube. Compared to other European sections of the limes, a relatively large number of surviving monuments of Roman military architecture are still to be seen in Austria. The aim is for these to be better protected and internationally recognised in the context of their future designation as a World Heritage Site. www.limes-oesterreich.at

The Roman experience in Upper Austria: ENNS / LAURIACUM See tips for excursions in Upper Austria on page 50 WELS / OVILAVA OVILAVA lay on a gravel terrace to the north of the River Traun, at the point where two arterial Roman roads intersected. The road leading from the east (CETIUM / St. Pölten, VINDOBONA / Vienna) to IUVAVUM / Salzburg crossed another road, constructed under Emperor Claudius, which ran north-south over the Alps to AQUILEIA. Its easy accessibility by road made Wels a trading post from early on. Today, when you follow the Roman Trail, which leads past 20 points of interest through the city of Wels, you’re walking on Roman remains. Schlögen/IOVIACUM The Donauschlinge, a river meander near Schlögen, is one of the scenic highlights of Austria’s Danube valley. The Danube Cycle Path leads past the site of the Roman fort. The west gate has been preserved. Eferding / AD MAUROS In ancient times, the settlement probably lay near a side-branch of the Danube. Traces of Roman history can be found in the exhibition rooms of the Eferding city museum, at the presbytery, and on information boards in public places.

A culture of remembrance www.linz.at/zeitgeschichte Linz has often found itself at the focal point of history. Its involvement in the Civil War of 1934 and the Nazi period (1938–1945) has left its stamp on the city up to the present day. Following the Anschluss (annexation) of Austria, which Adolf Hitler announced here, Linz was, as the protégé city of the Führer, the favoured object of Nazi urban and economic planning measures. The rapid expansion of the city was driven by the incorporation of smaller municipalities into bigger ones, and by the forced labour of thousands of foreign workers. This was what made possible the construction of large industrial sites like the “HermannGöring-Werke”, which primarily served the purpose of armament for war. In and around Linz, places of learning and remembrance are reminders of those dark times. The region is intensively concerned with the process of examining and coming to terms with the past. Scientific publications, memorials, symposia, and cultural projects like Friedensstadt Linz – Linz, City of Peace – represent an injunction to not forget and to try to learn from the past. Mauthausen Memorial Mauthausen Memorial (15 km east of Linz) is a harrowing testimony to the Nazi period. Between 1938 and 1945, over 200,000 people from all over Europe were incarcerated at this concentration camp; about half of them were murdered here. Contemporary historical tours of the air-raid shelter Guided tours with state-certified Austria Guides in Linz and the surrounding area inform you about its history from 1934 to 1955. During the Nazi dictatorship, existing tunnel systems were enlarged for air-raid purposes and as command centres through the forced labour of concentration camp prisoners.

It is possible to view part of this shelter, in order to learn more about the construction of and the experience of staying in the Limoni tunnels. One permanent highlight at the Landesgalerie is devoted to Alfred Kubin, an important representative of Expressionism and member of the legendary Blauer Reiter group of artists. The graphics collection of the Upper Austrian Provincial Museums houses the world’s largest collection of works by Alfred Kubin in the KubinKabinett, a space containing over 4,000 works.

The Bauhaus artist, born in Haag am Hausruck (1900), apprenticed under Georg Schmidthammer in his applied arts studio. He then studied and taught at the state-run Bauhaus school in Weimar, and is regarded as one of the founders of the professional field of graphic design. His works were denounced as “degenerate” during the Nazi regime. In 1937 he emigrated to the USA, where he continued his creative work.

Added to this, it also includes approx. 1,000 sheets from the artist’s own graphics collection. These are predominantly graphic reproductions of works by artists like Albrecht Dürer, Paul Gauguin, Edvard Munch, Auguste Rodin, and others. As the sheer abundance of these works would overwhelm many visitors, selections of the collection are put on temporary display, according to the central theme of each exhibition.
