LINZ.CHANGES, Danube cruises This manual is being published on the occasion of the 3rd Danube Tourism Conference on 5 - 7 December 2012 in Linz. Its motto: “From Myth to Trademark”. After the very successful development of Danube cruise tourism, the message coming from Linz will be that a successful future for tourism on the Danube can no longer be built on the familiar selling points, clichés and backdrops, but has to exploit the potential of the Danube and the Danube region more extensively. This means changing the scheduling of the Danube cruises in order to relieve congestion at certain locks on certain weekdays. This means new experiences in order to bring more visitors and return visitors to the Danube. This means developing new markets in order to gain visitors for the Danube not only from Europe and the USA, but also from China, India, Russia, Brazil or the Arab countries. It also means changes, new and additional offers, not to mention new marketing cooperation for product development and sales. Linz and Upper Austria see prospects in the development of Danube tourism, which open up additional possibilities both for shipping companies and tour operators, but also even better integrate the infrastructure along the river – from the hotels through the Blue Danube Airport Linz to the still undiscovered monasteries, towns and modern attractions, such as the Ars Electronica Center and Linz’s new opera house. This manual provides suggestions and organisational help, and should be understood as a first step towards even more intensive cooperation with all partners involved in Danube cruise tourism – from ports through the Linz shipyard to the services offered by electronic databases for Danube apps, websites etc. Let’s come together to continue to develop the Danube. The Linzer Landstraße, the main shopping street in the city centre, is close to the moorings and offers a good mix of high-quality shops during your stay.

The proximity to many world heritage sites makes the capital of Upper Austria an excellent starting point for excursions. Four UNESCO world heritage sites are within less than 200 km. The old town of Krumau is well worth seeing, as are the impressive world of mountains and lakes in Hallstatt and the famous wine growing region of Wachau – just a few of the highlights you can visit from Linz.

The Ars Electronica Center, the “Museum of the Future”, hosts exciting exhibitions. Digital art and technology, fascinating architecture and constantly changing LED façade lighting make the Ars Electronica Center especially eye-catching when viewed from onboard, particularly in the evening. Highlight: ships can have their name spelt out individually on the illuminated façade.

Linz symbolises the further development of the Danube region. Both the modern buildings on the Danube (Ars Electronica Center, Lentos Museum of Modern Art, Brucknerhaus) and the new cultural formats and festivals (Ars Electronica Festival, the Höhenrausch and Sinnesrausch exhibition projects) show cultural developments in the 20th and 21st centuries.

2013 Music The starting point is the opening of Europe's most modern opera house in Linz. But also the composer Anton Bruckner and numerous creative musicians of national significance, who have left their traces in Linz and Upper Austria. 2014 Danube 25 years since the fall of the Iron Curtain and a century since the outbreak of WW1, which can be viewed in the overall context of the Danube Monarchy as a multinational state. In 2014 the attention of many Europeans will be drawn to the Danube. Consequently, communication, special publications by the established media and programme formats will be a focus in Linz.

2015 Still open The expo taking place in Milan could be a connection point for distant markets. Its main focus is food. Gourmet trips and dining themes should be considered in connection with the Danube/Milan expo.

2016 Sport, art and culture In October 2016, Linz will be hosting the Karate World Championships with contenders from more than 100 nations. The staging of the World Championships and the planning of artistic and cultural activities in Linz will be developed around this slogan.

2017 Reformation The 500th anniversary of Luther’s posting of his theses is approaching. This will be a central theme throughout Europe. The character of Linz and Upper Austria in particular then became very protestant. But the effects of the Reformation also led to confusion, changes and upheavals along the whole of the Danube. In the national tourism strategy, the Danube takes equal place with the Alps and our renowned cities. The Danube stands for cultural and city tourism as well as for nature, cuisine and enjoyment. For the further development of the Danube for tourism, the focus is precisely on these themes. The shipping companies and tour operators for Danube cruises are being supported, the Danube products are being further developed, so that the myth of the Danube can be used in its full scope and still further markets tapped into.

Prelude to new cultural experiences That’s a theatre. After 2009, which saw Linz as Europe’s cultural capital, the opening of the Musiktheater am Volks garten, the city’s new opera house, will send waves throughout Europe. The new opera house, the Bruckner Orchestra Linz and such famous names as Dennis Russell Davies or Philip Glass make Linz a lively centre for music and the performing arts. With the opening of Europe's most modern opera house in April, a whole new era of cultural enjoyment begins for those interested in the arts. With seats for 1,200 people, the new Musiktheater is Austria’s largest cultural building. The technology developed exclusively for Linz is unique: this includes a transportable revolving stage which, with a diameter of 32 metres, is one of the biggest in the world. This means that several changes of scene can be prepared at one and the same time. No other theatre in the world provides this combination of proven technologies. Threefold anticipation of the new opera house Visitors will enjoy operas, musicals and ballet performances even more, thanks to optimal acoustics, an uninterrupted view and comfortable seating. The higher capacity means that Linz will be even more attractive than before for international stars and visiting productions. And thirdly, the greater available space means the opera house’s own ensemble will finally be able to stage productions with a large orchestra, and thus offer the audience the whole spectrum of operas and musicals.

The world-famous Bruckner Orchestra Linz under the direction of music director and conductor Dennis Russell Davies ensure perfect sound. It is one of Austria’s most prestigious symphonic orchestras.

The expanded dimensions on the stage and in the orchestra pit will in future make it possible to offer big operas such as the Ring of the Nibelung, Parsifal or Salome, as well as large orchestrated works of the 20th century by such composers as Britten, Berg, Shostakovich or Glass. Ballets, operettas and musicals will make use of these expanded facilities as well. The genius

Instantly recognisable Steel, chrome and a rich cultural heritage. Linz follows in the footsteps of Anton Bruckner, while encouraging innovation, experiments and the extraordinary.

The Bruckner Festival honours the musical genius of Anton Bruckner. The divine spirit of “God’s composer” has never been more alive than it is today. Bruckner lived in and around Linz from 1824 to 1896. The Brucknerhaus, the Bruckner Festival and the private Bruckner University (under construction), the first to be built as a passive construction, still honour the composer today. And lest we forget, there’s also the Bruckner Stairway in the Alter Dom (Old Cathedral). For the very first time, this memorial site enables visitors to approach the composer – step by step. Anyone visiting the Bruckner Stairway is also treading in the paths which Bruckner once took.

As a result, the Linzer Klangwolke has received global attention. 1979 was the first year when music flowed out of the concert hall of the Brucknerhaus into the autumn air as an audiovisual spectacular for up to 100,000 visitors on the banks of the Danube. Another positive feature of the city: Anyone can access and afford to enjoy culture in Linz. Elitism is elsewhere! Soundscape of the city Almost 40 years ago the opening of the Brucknerhaus attracted a similar amount of interest as the opening of the new Musiktheater this year. The timelessly beautiful structure of the Finnish architects Kaija und Heikki Sirén is set to become the soundscape of the city. In the concert intervals, the opera house offers a unique view of the green cultural zone of the Donaupark. Good acoustics and a musical programme ranging from classical to brass draw around 200,000 culture vultures to the concert halls of the Brucknerhaus each season. www.brucknerhaus.at

2 Circular tour through the historic market town of Engelhartszell The Danube market town of Engelhartszell was and remains one of the most significant places close to the border, thanks to its position on the Danube traffic and trading route. Next to the Engelszell monastery can be found the Imperial

Toll Gate, the most important building of the market town, which collected tolls from 1450. From your mooring to the Danube Stories exhibition. At the entrance you’ll find an info point, which will tell you about “Natura 2000”, then continue along the Marktstrasse to the Imperial Toll Gate.

3 Along the Danube region on the Danube path At the Engelhartszell I mooring, you will be given a friendly welcome by the Penzenstein cliff across the river, with its magnificent view of the Danube. The start of the Danube path – the second stopping point on the “Engelhartszell Danube World”, where you’ll discover much about shipping and the Danube. In the Danube workshops, creations by local artists are displayed from May to October. The Danube Exhibition is located in the Danube Ship. Here numerous displays and items from the 1994 state exhibition have found their home. Continue in the direction of the Danube ferry to the German-Austrian Jochenstein Danube power station. An important stopping point on this path is the Roman milestone, a reference to the Roman Limes, the former border of the Roman empire. The “Haus am Strom” can be found on the Bavarian side.

Schlögen; mooring 5 1 Walks from Schlögen From the Schlögen mooring you walk downriver to the small road called the Güterweg Inzell. Turn right here and after 60 m you'll reach the start of the Schlögener Blick trail on the left-hand side of the road. Initially the trail rises steeply, before you comfortably reach the world-famous vantage point. From here you enjoy an impressive view of the natural wonder of Upper Austria, the Schlögener Schlinge loop. The walking time there and back comes to approx. 1 hour.

A beautiful short walk takes you around the Hotel Donauschlinge. At the rear of the hotel premises are the small remains of a western gate from Roman times. In 1838 a Roman castle was discovered at the hotel premises. You can find more information on the information board. www.haibach-donau.at

and experience the Danube valley Walks from Aschach; mooring 8 , Ottensheim; mooring 10 and Grein; mooring 18 There’s still a little bit of the Middle Ages to discover The charming market town on the Danube Cycleway lies between Passau and Linz, where the Danube leaves the confinement of the “Sauwald” and flows into the open “Eferding basin”. Aschach was first mentioned in the year 777 on the foundation of Kremsmünster monastery and in 1512 it received its own market coat-of-arms from Emperor Maximilian with the confirmation of its legal status as a market town. Thanks to its central position on the Danube with the Danube crossing (formerly a cable ferry, now the Danube bridge) the connection to the railway, Aschach has been an important trading point for many centuries.

1 Aschach barrier-free culture trail With the creation of a barrier-free culture trail along the Danube promenade, Aschach offers a further cultural highlight, which is designed especially for people with disabilities. The stopping points along the Danube are located between the parish church and the Schopperplatz. Each one offers a translation into sign language via a monitor. Easy-to-read texts make it possible for people with learning difficulties to absorb the information.

2 Schopper- und Fischereimuseum (approx. 800 m from the mooring upstream) The museum presents the history of the market town of Aschach in connection with the building of wooden rowboats and shipping on the Upper Danube. The Schoppermuseum explains the historical craft of wooden rowboat making as well as the social and cultural background to this trade. What’s more, the last original “Zehner Trauner” is on display, a wooden rowboat able to transport 10 cubic metres of stone. The fishery museum shows the development of commercial and leisure fishing in Upper Austria with special reference to the Upper Danube. www.aschach.at

Friendly, idyllic Danube market town with romantic alleys and a distinctive character. Once an important trading hub on the Danube, Ottensheim is Austria’s third oldest market town and has a historical market centre with buildings from past centuries. According to an old legend, the inscription on the “Kindlhaus” states that Emperor Otto IV was born there in 1208. Historians have never been able to prove this, but we are nonetheless proud of “our Kindlhaus”!

On the Calvary hill and at the Donaublick in the Castle park, you can gain a magnificent view of the town of Grein and the Danube. Directly on the Danube, the newly-designed Danube Promenade invites you to walk and while your time away. Stroll from the “Esperantoplatz” in the west to the “Halterkreuz” in the east. On the “Esperantoplatz”, next to the mooring of the Danube ferry, there is also the sundial of the physicist, Dr. Werner Riegler, who lived in Grein. The Halterkreuz at the eastern entrance to the town recalls the miraculous rescue of a shepherd boy from the floodwaters of the Danube.

Mooring 15 "Mauthausen goes round" Much from centuries gone by can still be seen and discovered today on a tour of Mauthausen. Mauthausen stands on an old settlement area, which is verified by findings from the Neolithic period. The importance of the location increased over the centuries, because two trade routes crossed here: the Danube ship route and the salt and iron route. Pragstein Castle was established on a little rock island in the Danube by Lasla of Prague. A solid bridge was constructed over the Danube for first time in 1505.

Heindlkai This dock was called Johanneskai in former times. Today's name comes from the mayor Leopold Heindl. Pragstein Castle This was originally a moated castle, surrounded by the Danube. Access was only possible by means of a suspension bridge. Today, Pragstein Castle accommodates the museum of local history and the provincial school of music. It also accommodates a pharmacy museum and the Prof. Gerstmayr-Museum (steel cuts) as well as a hunting trophy collection. The Johannes Nepomuk statue is in the proximity of the elementary school. He is considered to be the patron of confessors, priests, mariners, raftsmen, bridges, millers and of the confessional secret; Johannes Nepomuk also helps in the case of all water dangers and stands for discretion. Grein, mooring 18 Grein – „Pearl of the Strudengau“ That's what poets call the little old Danube town of Grein. The citizens of Grein have possessed the town charter since 1491. In the medieval period it was known far and wide as the “little olden town", and today Grein enchants with nostalgic charm. The Historical Town Theatre of Grein (1791) is, as the oldest secular theatre in Austria, without doubt an attraction of European importance. Today, the so well-preserved town theatre is regarded as a gem. Many curiosities from the past can be seen here. Original seats that had to be locked/unlocked with a small key; a toilet that was separated from the auditorium only by a curtain; a prison from where the prisoners could watch the performances and were given food, drinks and tobacco by the audience, so that they could really enjoy the show; the Napoleon box and a lot more. Today it offers 167 seats. The historical town square of Grein On the town square and along the main street, we see predominantly two and three storey farmers' town houses, on extended medieval parcels of land, which are typical of the city. The old town hall with the historical town theatre and the former shipmaster's house with the Arkadenhof courtyard are especially worth seeing (incl. history of the Danube town of Grein and history of shipping on the Danube). Greinburg Castle One of the oldest occupied castles in the Habsburg Empire, built 1488 - 1493. It gained its current appearance under Count Leonhard Helfrich von Meggau, who acquired the castle in 1621. Its stunning Renaissance arcaded inner courtyard: one of the largest and most beautiful from the late Renaissance, a space with Gothic cellular vaulting.

The famous Danube Cycleway leads along the great river from Germany via Austria to Hungary. A peaceful and romantic, yet varied cycle path from Passau via Linz to Grein awaits you. Fabulous hiking experiences on the Donausteig

The great diversity of the different landscapes along the Bavarian-Upper Austrian Danube alone would be enough to merit a cry of “Simply fabulous!”. Coming from the historical three rivers city of Passau, the river first wends its way through the wooded ridges of the upper Danube valley. The highlight of this stretch is the Schlögener Schlinge loop. Over millions of years, the

river has truly bitten away in vain at the hard Schlögener rock. So it has had to find a detour, changing its direction twice.

You can hike along the following circular routes, directly from the moorings: Donausteig tours downriver

A fabulous joy for the hiker, who is able to view this spectacle. Next comes the fertile plain of the Eferding Basin, the vegetable garden of Upper Austria. Between the Mühlviertel and the massive back of the Kürnberg Forest, the Danube makes its way to Linz, the regional capital, and on into the alluvial forest around the mouths of the rivers Enns and Traun. The Machland to the north of the river is again fertile flat land, before the banks in the Strudengau again become more rugged, wild and romantic just before the little town of Grein.

The Linz shipyard decades of competence For decades, the ÖSWAG has meant “the shipyard” to the people of Linz. The main focus of the shipyard is the carrying out of ship repairs, installation of new engines, modification and construction of passenger ships, cargo ships and tankers. The latest new vessels (passenger ships) have been supplied to the Achsensee, Lake Constance, the Bielersee and the Danube. Two hopper barges and a dredger pontoon for the AHP, a pumping station for the ÖMV, a boat for the police in Vienna, a prototype of an official boat for the shipping inspectorate, and the swimming whirlpool for the Weisse Rössl hotel were further highlights of the last years. The potential of the shipyard lies in its location directly on the Danube, in its employees, and

in the good infrastructure in combination with the machine pool of ÖSWAG Maschinenbau. The Ö SWAG shipyard is the only one in Austria for large vessels and can almost cover all the requirements of inland navigation. The Linz shipyard serves the shipping companies as a 1.service support point along the Danube and as a winter harbour. It can respond rapidly and flexibly by providing an efficient slipway, the halls, and the available berths. Almost all services are offered which are needed for the smooth operation of ships. Mobile squads ensure technical support along the Danube and also in the lake districts of Austria, Switzerland and Germany. The infrastructure (slipway length = 270 m, hall, cranes) enable 2 ships with a length of 130 m to be brought to shore simultaneously. Vessel widths of up to 20 m are possible. Every year, approx.

130 to 160 vessels of different types and sizes are taken out of the water and maintained on the slipway. As of 2013 Linz Harbour and WGD Tourismus GmbH offer shipping companies a special service: With advance notice, vessels which are booked into the ships' moorings of WGD Tourismus GmbH in Linz, can use the moorings of Linz Harbour for their supply and disposal activities. Advantage: Smooth access for trucks possible for handling! Cleaning and small maintenance works are also possible! Additionally, they benefit from being able to use the berths of Linz Harbour for wintering their ships.

Logistics hub close to the Cittàslow Enns – Ennshafen, mooring Nr. 16 The Ennshafen harbour, some 30 km from Linz, is a modern service centre for the loading business and lies at the Enns-Danube confluence. The ships' mooring is located directly in the harbour and has a good ship infrastructure with direct bus access. A Danube ferry connects Enns with Mauthausen. The Ennshafen lies not far (approx. 4 km) from the small town of Enns, a “little historical town” with a long history. The medieval old town and the town tower as well as numerous historic buildings and excavations bear witness to this. The “Lauriacum” museum, which focuses on the Roman period, possesses one of the most significant

collections of Roman artefacts in Austria – Prehistory, town history, sacred art, folklore and art collection. Moorings for every kind of passenger cabin vessel (single mooring berth). Space enough for the car To make it easier to find a parking space, a parking guidance system has been introduced. The urban area of Linz is divided into “Urfahr” (GREEN), “Zentrum Ost” (RED) and “Zentrum West” (YELLOW) zones. Each of the three zones has been marked with a characteristic colour, which is also used on the information board signage. Lorry drivers are thus directed quickly and without detours to garages in which the vehicle can be parked with no time limit. Furthermore, there are parking spaces in direct proximity to tram and bus stops.
