GREA GROUTP PACKA GES

Group Package: The Magic of Advent in Upper Austria

Travel to the city of culture on the Danube Travelling is about leaving your daily routine behind and diving into an unknown city, even if just for a short time. Wanderlust and travel fever often grow out of a yearning to stop time or spend it in an unique way. An unforgettable ‘break’ should be short and have a good balance between encountering the unknown and the lightness of pleasure and joy. Linz, a city that also knows how to appreciate its own inhabitants, offers guests an experience of an authentic city. Dive in – to the colorful scenery on the Danube. The city, located in the center of Upper Austria, is characterised by life on the river. Linz represents future trends and modernity, but knows how to treasure its history and roots. All of the past influences have made the city what it is today: One of the most exciting, urban centres of Austria with a lively cultural scene. The diversity that Linz has to offer makes a visit something very special. Inquisitive visitors can try out new things, make new connections and open up to new developments in this UNESCO City of Media Arts. A group tour to the city of the future reflects the spirit of our times, foregoing clichés and making an authentic holiday experience. Even a short group trip to Linz will be packed with both culture and pleasure and long be remembered.

Enjoy the view of the Danube Visitors will not only gasp at the beautiful views from the Pöstlingberg and its pilgramige basilica, but also from the Höhenrausch. Because in spring, the popular media arts exhibit takes on a new phase over the rooftops of the city. Other Linz highlights are the impressive voestalpine Stahlwelt factory tour, the Lentos Kunstmuseum for contemporary art, including works ranging from Schiele to Andy Warhol, and the Musiktheater, one of Europe’s most modern opera houses. And, naturally, a visit to Linz must also include a walk through the city centre. Many small shops await with souvenirs of every kind, and don’t forget to pick up a beloved Linzer Torte to enjoy once you are home. Whoever travels to Linz returns with many unique memories and, maybe, even a small bit of themselves changed.

© Susanne Einzenberger

Experience the course of history in Linz In the year 2018, Linz will be taking the time to look back at its past. It is a year that resounds with defining events in history. In 1918, one hundred years ago, the First World War ended, and a long period of change began. The monarchy was dissolved, a republic was founded, and Europe was anticipating a more or less peaceful period. Linz was in the middle. 20 years later, this city would play a significant role for the National Socialists. With 1938, shortly before the beginning of the second world war, another year of commemoration unfolded. It was a century of change and upheaval. By 1968, 50 years ago, a generation of young people were out on the streets for peace and freedom. The world’s political events of the past 100 years have defined Linz and influenced its development. Museums and cultural establishments are now dedicating exhibits, specially guided tours and topics about these turbulent times. Visitors can vividly experience history and recognise its effects on life today. Dive into the future and feel awe Linz’s reputation as a steel city was made years ago and remains firmly in many minds. But its diverse cultural offerings and beautiful location on the river define the city much more than its industry. The past may have defined Linz’s character and made many developments possible in the first place. But the here and now, and especially the future, have become today’s focus. If you are curious about future developments, the city on the Danube is the right place, and a visit to the Arts Electronica Center is a must. In this museum of the future, pioneering technology meets visionary media arts. Visitors can experiment, discover and even act like researchers. Linz’s open-mindedness is also reflected at its harbour. Here, over recent years, one of the largest connected graffiti galleries has emerged. More than 100 colourful works of art decorate the imposing façades of the industrial buildings which are up to 40 metres.

© Susanne Einzenberger

If you want to experience change, come to Linz. No other city has such an impressive transformation behind it. The Linz of today, with its urban flair on the Danube, has a lively city centre, museums bursting with unique media arts and highly praised events at its concert venues.

OÖ LANDESAUSSTELLUNG 2018 THE RETURN OF THE ROMAN LEGION’S LEGACY IN OÖ The Roman Empire greatly shaped the history of Upper Austria and its traces still remain today. Roman soldiers built legionary camps, forts and watch towers along the Danube which not only secured the northern border of the Roman Empire for centuries, but also brought the achievements of the Roman civilization to the region. The search for the traces of the Romans begins in Oberranna and Schlögen in the Upper Danube Valley and leads along the Danube over Linz to Enns, the main site of this national exhibit. EXHIBITION VENUES Enns/Museum Lauriacum The former Lauriacum was one of the largest and most important trade and military bases on the northern border of the Roman Empire. The new exhibit at the Musuem Lauriacum displays priceless original artefacts, has extensive reconstructions and a film produced just for this exhibition.

DANUBE BOAT TRIP

The great river connecting Europe was, and still is, used as a primary transport route for conveying people and goods as well as for the exchange of culture and language. Exploring the Roman sites along the Danube will give you an idea of the Danube’s significance for the Romans as the natural border of the Danube limes. As part of the reorganisation of the church after the Roman period, numerous monasteries and abbeys were built along the Danube. With the Habsburg Monarchy, the Danube region enjoyed what was surely its most glorious time of prosperity. Empress Sisi, who first travelled by ship from Passau to Vienna as a young bride, particularly indulged her love of travelling with frequent trips along the river.

The famous Danube Cycle Path follows the shores of the great river from Germany through Austria and on into Hungary. Cyclists can look enjoy a peaceful, romantic and yet diverse cycle path from Passau to Grein via Linz along the Upper Austrian section of the Danube. www.donauradweg.at

Over 450 km and 23 stages, the Donausteig hiking trail runs from Passau to Grein via Linz. This hiking trail, which was awarded the Austrian Hiking Quality Seal, provides breathtaking views of the great river and the unique landscape through which it flows from both sides of the Danube. www.donausteig.com

Cross over to the opposite bank of the Danube in a leisurely manner on board one of the Danube boats. Various stages along the Danube Cycle Path or the Donausteig hiking trail can also be covered by boat instead. THE DANUBE BEND AT SCHLÖGEN The Danube bend at Schlögen is a primordial meander here because it makes two truly spectacular changes in direction. It’s worth the time to stop and walk out to the viewpoint. Just a short stroll through the forest brings you to an unobstructed view of this fascinating natural spectacle.

Climbing up to the organ via the Bruckner Stairway, you’ll see display windows and posters detailing the life and works of Anton Bruckner. Overnight is in a standard middle-class hotel in Linz. Day 2: Priory of St. Florian The Augustinian monastery of St. Florian was home for Anton Bruckner even as a youth. The tour will show you the historical and partially ornate rooms of the Priory of St. Florian and end with a short organ recital on the Bruckner organ. At noon, there will be a 2-course meal in the monastery cellar. AUGUSTINIAN PRIORY OF ST. FLORIAN www.stift-st-florian.at The Augustinian Priory of St. Florian is a place of fellowship and worship, yet, at the same time, it is a cultural centre for the region. It was in this ecclesiastical community that Bruckner immersed himself deep in the world of music, first as a choirboy and later as an organist. It was here that he perfected his organ playing and created his first large-scale compositions. And it was this place, in the vault beneath the organ, which became his final resting place. Bruckner Organ at St. Florian The master organ builder, Franz Xaver Krismann, began building the Anton Bruckner Organ in the artist’s honour in 1770. Over the course of time, it has been expanded and now comprises 4 manuals, 103 stops and 7,386 organ pipes. Tours of the Priory 01 May–14 Oct ‘18 daily at 11.00, 13.00 and 15.00. Bruckner memorial “Bruckner Stairway in the Alter Dom”. Special tours on the theme of Anton Bruckner and Linz, illustrated with samples of music and stories from the life of Anton Bruckner, lead you up to the famous Bruckner Organ.

Administered by the Jesuits, the Ignatiuskirche or Alter Dom is famous for its historic Bruckner Organ. It was here at the Old Cathedral that Bruckner obtained his second post as full-time professional organist. Modified in Bruckner’s time according to his own wishes, today the instrument still sounds as it did in his day – which is what makes it so unique.

The neo-Gothic Mariendom or ‘New Cathedral’ is the largest church in Austria and an important symbol. The interesting tours let you see the cathedral up close and explore rooms and balconies not normally open to the public, from crypt to tower.

BRUCKNERHAUS

www.landeskonzerte.at

www.brucknerhaus.at

These series of classical music concerts away from the mainstream are performed in venues not normally available for concerts. The four series of concerts, from the region of Upper Austria, offer music for music lovers:

A stage replete with history. A hall with excellent acoustics. A repertoire of international dimensions. Architecture that exemplifies boldness and stylistic confidence. The Brucknerhaus is everything that music should be: A powerful symphony that pays tribute to passion. In 2017/2018, it’s also well worth immersing yourself in the world of musical stars and great orchestras, such as the Cleveland Orchestra, Bolshoi Theatre Belarus Orchestra, Viennese Philharmonic Orchestra and orchestras from Birmingham, Luxembourg, Moscow and many more. Internationality is just as important to us as diversity: Daniela Fally is appearing with the Tonkunstler Orchestra Vienna. We’re really looking forward to Sir Roger Norrington, Sergej Redkin in two concerts, and Rudolf Buchbinder will be continuing the Beethoven series. The large Christmas gala is also taking place at the Brucknerhaus. Markus Paschner, as the new director of the Bruckner Orchester Linz, will be opening the new season and celebrating New Year‘s Eve with the Philharmonices mundi and Josef Sabaini - the university professor at the Anton Bruckner Private University. There’s also a variety of local and international artists, aspiring young classics, stars from the music world and our packed festival calendar, with highlights ranging from vocal music to new music.

More than 200,000 people from all over Europe were imprisoned at the Nazi concentration camp Mauthausen and its over 40 auxiliary camps between 1938 and 1945. Over 90,000 of them lost their lives and were murdered there. The preserved historical buildings and constructions, the Wiener Graben quarry with the ‘stairs of death’, more than 20 national monuments, two permanent exhibitions and a memorial “Room of Names” may be toured.

Located just a few kilometres away from Mauthausen, Gusen was a secondary camp for the concentration camp Mauthausen which was actually larger than the main camp. Today, there are few traces left of this concentration camp. The memorial includes the former crematorium and an exhibition titled “Gusen Concentration Camp 1939-1945. Traces - Fragments Reconstructions”.

Schloss Hartheim is the location of the memorial to the victims of the Nazi euthanasia programme and the exhibition “Value of Life”. It provides information on the historical events as well as current developments and discussion in the areas of ethics, medicine, biotechnology and disabilities.

The Contemporary History exhibition by voestalpine commemorates the forced labourers at Reichswerke Hermann Göring in Linz. Never before had Upper Austria seen so many foreigners forced to work as during the Nazi regime: forced civilian workers, concentration camp prisoners and prisoners of war. They built an iron and steelworks in Linz in 1938, which gradually began operation in 1941. The plant was not only an oversized building celebrating Nazi prestige, but also an essential component of the Nazi arms industry. Group tours for 15 or more persons Mon.–Sat. 09.00–17.00 Duration: 1.5 - 2 hrs. Individuals and small groups up to 15 persons Wed., Thurs. and Sat. 09.00-17.00, Fri. 13.00-17.00
