Immerse yourself in the city of metamorphosis! Take a glance at the future, relax in wonderful natural surroundings, enjoy a slice of Linzer Torte in the baroque Old Town and admire oversized graffiti art: Visitors to Linz can experience this unique diversity.
The Danube © R. Eckerstorfer
It is not only the history of the city by the Danube that will impress you. In the UNESCO City of Media Arts, the present, the ongoing development and the future play an even more important role. It is precisely this attitude throughout the entire city that makes Linz so special. Visitors can also visit the baroque Old Town here, but there are even more extraordinary highlights. In the Ars Electronica Center, the museum of the future, you can take a glance at the future and admire technological developments that you wouldn’t have believed to be possible. The building is really impressive at night, as is Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz with its LED facade, which illuminates the Danube in many different colours. Linzer Torte © Jindrak
Colourful artwork also decorates the industrial buildings in Linz harbour: Hundreds of oversized graffiti works of art have been created in recent years in the Mural Harbor outdoor gallery. Visitors can admire these from the water, on a boat trip on the Danube or on a guided tour with a subsequent graffiti crash course. The variety of the city by the Danube also inspires lovers of culture and great cuisine: for instance, Linzer Torte tastes best after a shopping trip, in one of the traditional coffeehouses. And in the evening, you’ll be tempted by a wide variety of bars and restaurants, ranging from classic Upper Austrian, to modern and innovative, for a truly pleasurable time. Attending a concert, an opera or a musical in the Brucknerhaus or the Musiktheater rounds off your break in Linz perfectly.

Inspire your customers, friends, acquaintances or colleagues about Linz and organise a short trip to the UNESCO City of Media Arts! Groups have a really special time here, immerse themselves in the everyday life of the lively city by the Danube and have stories to tell about their unique short trip for a long time to come.

The Danube in Upper Austria The Danube – one of Europe’s greatest storytellers – flows slowly and leisurely. It tells of times long ago, of powerful rulers and the local inhabitants’ wealth of legends and myths. The Danube knows so many of the stories that have shaped the land and its people since they came into being. There is much to discover in the Upper Austrian section of the river: The Danube traveller enjoys breathtaking views, walks legendary trails, explores the beautiful riparian landscape on the Danube Cycle Path, experiences the countryside rolling by from a boat and samples culinary delicacies.
DANUBE CULTURE
DANUBE CYCLE PATH
DONAUSTEIG
The great river connecting Europe was and is used primarily as a transport route, not only for the conveyance of people and goods, but also for the exchange of culture and language. By exploring the Roman sites along the Danube, you get an idea of the significance the Danube had for the Romans as the natural border of the Danube limes.
The famous Danube Cycle Path runs along the great river from Germany through Austria and on to Hungary. Cyclists can look forward to a peaceful, romantic and yet varied cycle path from Passau to Grein via Linz along the Upper Austrian section of the Danube. www.donauradweg.at
Over 450 km and 23 stages, the Donausteig hiking trail runs from Passau to Grein via Linz. On both sides of the Danube, the hiking trail awarded the Austrian Hiking Quality Seal provides breathtaking views of and perspectives on the great river and the unique landscape through which it flows. www.donausteig.com
When the church was reorganised after the Roman period, numerous monasteries and abbeys were built by the Danube. With the Habsburg Monarchy, the Danube region enjoyed what was surely its most glorious time of prosperity. Empress Sisi, in particular, indulged her love of travelling by taking frequent trips along the Danube. In addition, her bridal journey by ship led her from Passau to Vienna.

Administered by the Jesuits, the Ignatiuskirche or Alter Dom is famous for its historic Bruckner Organ. THE AUGUSTINIAN PRIORY OF ST. FLORIAN WWW.STIFT-ST-FLORIAN.AT The Augustinian Priory of St. Florian is a place of fellowship and devotion, and, at the same time, a cultural focal point for the region. It was in this ecclesiastical community that Bruckner immersed himself deep in the world of music, first as a choirboy and later as an organist. It was here that he perfected his organ playing and created his first large-scale compositions. And it was this place, in the vault beneath the organ, which became his final resting place. Bruckner Organ at St. Florian From 1770 onwards, master organ builder Franz Xaver Krismann began building the Anton Bruckner Organ in the artist’s honour. Over the course of time, it was enlarged, and now comprises 4 manuals, 103 stops and 7,386 organ pipes. Cultural delights by the Danube Linz is a city of metamorphosis: Its culture makes this particularly apparent. There is a lively independent scene, which develops exciting projects, and small playhouses, which open up new perspectives for the audience. In addition, the numerous new buildings and revitalisation projects are also impressive. Musiktheater Linz, for example, was opened in 2013 and is now one of the most modern opera houses in Europe. Here, visitors can experience exciting productions of operas, musicals and dance theatre.

The Brucknerhaus, Linz’s concert hall right by the Danube, is famous for its acoustics. In the hall praised by no less than Herbert von Karajan himself, world-class musicians perform, and take the audience on an audio journey. Numerous concerts also take place in the new Anton Bruckner Private University on Pöstlingberg. Halfway up Linz’s local hill, architects have created another venue for music and an exciting building at the same time with the new construction. Schauspielhaus an der Promenade will also be reopened in 2017 after its renovation, and will offer delightful theatre of the highest quality. However, cultural events also take place in public spaces in Linz. Particularly in summer, many open-air events in the city and concerts by the Danube captivate visitors. Pflasterspektakel, where the entire city is transformed into a stage for street art, is especially popular.

Architecture that exemplifies boldness and stylistic confidence. The Brucknerhaus is everything that music should be: a powerful symphony that pays tribute to passion. In 2016/2017, it’s also well worth immersing yourself in the world of the stars and great orchestras, such as the Vienna Philharmonic, the Staatskapelle Dresden with András Schiff, and with orchestras from St Petersburg, Oslo, Tatarstan and Taiwan, among others. Internationality is just as important to us as diversity: Conchita Wurst is giving a concert with the Bruckner Orchester Linz. We’re really looking forward to Anne-Sophie Mutter, Denis Matsuev in two concerts, Rudolf Buchbinder and the start of his Beethoven series. For the first time, we’ll be adding to the magic of Christmas with a large gala at the Brucknerhaus. Dennis Russell Davies is entering his final season with the Bruckner Orchester Linz. We’re celebrating the New Year with the Budapest Operetta Gala – the show is considered to be the best in the world. There’s also a variety of local and international artists, aspiring young classics, stars from the music industry and our packed festival calendar, with areas of focus ranging from vocal music to new music. SCHAUSPIELHAUS & KAMMERSPIELE WWW.LANDESTHEATER-LINZ.AT
The Bruckner Orchester Linz can look back on a history spanning over 200 years. In recent decades, it has become one of Central Europe’s leading ensembles, not least thanks to its successful recordings of Philip Glass and Anton Bruckner.
In 2013, the Landestheater opened a new performance venue: Musiktheater am Volksgarten, Europe’s most modern opera house. High comfort for the audience, outstanding acoustics, an optimal view of the stage and state-ofthe-art stage technology make a visit to the theatre an unforgettable experience. The repertory theatre with seating for up to 1,200 people in the main auditorium places a particular emphasis on opera, operetta, ballet and musicals. The theatre was opened with the premiere of Philip Glass’ opera Spuren der Verirrten (The Lost), conducted by the General Music Director of the Bruckner Orchester, Dennis Russell Davies. From an artistic point of view, it is possible to play the entire opera repertoire with a full orchestra.
The audience will have better seats, and will be able to hear and see better from spring 2017 in the recently renovated Schauspielhaus an der Promenade.

TIPSARENA AND STADIUM WWW.LIVASPORT.AT
The sparks from ideas rather than cigarettes now fire productivity in Linz’s Tabakfabrik. After the production of cigarettes was discontinued in 2009, the industrial jewel in the style of the New Objectivity was acquired by the City of Linz and is gradually becoming a focal point for creative industries and an internationally sought-after location for large-scale exhibitions, conferences, festivals and company events. Over 400 people already work here – more than were working in the Tabakfabrik before it closed. The last large industrial construction of the renowned architect Peter Behrens, inventor of corporate design, is a synthesis of the arts with a covered useable area of around 80,000 m², and is one of the most important monuments in Linz.
The best features of the TipsArena include its central location, outstanding technology and flexible stage. Practically any kind of sport is possible, plus extravagant company events, impressive shows and musicals, and rock and pop concerts with up to 10,500 spectators. Linz Stadium is likewise used for sporting and for large-scale cultural events – such as open-air concerts with international stars.

CONTEMPORARY HISTORY EXHIBITION 1938–1945 WWW.VOESTALPINE.COM/ZEITGESCHICHTE With the Contemporary History exhibition 1938–1945, voestalpine remembers the forced labourers at Reichswerke Hermann Göring in Linz during the Nazi period. Never before had so many foreigners worked in Upper Austria as during the Nazi regime: forced civilian workers, concentration camp detainees and prisoners of war. In Linz, an iron and steelworks was built from 1938, which was gradually put into operation from 1941. The plant was not only an oversized building celebrating Nazi prestige, but also an essential component of the Nazi arms industry. Between 1938 and 1945, more than 200,000 people from all over Europe were imprisoned at the Nazi concentration camp Mauthausen and its over 40 subsidiary camps; around 100,000 people were murdered there. You can visit the preserved historical buildings and constructions, the Wiener Graben quarry with the stairs of death, more than 20 national monuments, two permanent exhibitions and a memorial room, the “Room of Names”.
On 5 May 1945, soldiers of the US Army liberated over 20,000 concentration camp prisoners in Gusen. At that time, more people were detained in this concentration camp than in the main camp at Mauthausen. The former crematorium and the exhibition “The Gusen Concentration Camp 1939– 1945.
