Incredibly contemporary, Upper Austria

Linz: A city of culture with character A city as diverse as its people: Linz on the Danube is future-oriented, modern with an exciting history, secluded yet cosmopolitan. Upper Austria’s state capital has character. Those who explore it will make a close friendship. Linz does not show off, not even in its first impressions – this makes it all the more authentic. The Danube alone, which flows through the centre, is a source of strength for residents and visitors. Everyone who scales the Pöstlingberg using the steepest of adhesion railways gets a good view of Linz and its surroundings. The Ars Electronica Center offers a look into the future, as the artificial intelligence in this centre has already changed our lives. The museums show how diverse the city can be: while the voestalpine Stahlwelt turns the city’s industrial facilities into an experience and the Lentos Art Museum is known for its contemporary collection, the OÖ Kulturquartier has reinvented the beloved “Höhenrausch” event. Also full of colouris the graffiti gallery “Mural Harbor”, located in the harbour, where new highlights are constantly appearing. At the same time, the roots of the city are exemplified through an entertaining, guided “city walk” through the city centre. The city’s theatres are also located nearby, where emotions run high: while the Brucknerhaus, located right on the Danube, has unique acoustics, the Musiktheater is one of the most modern opera houses in Europe, showing musicals and dance in addition to opera. Linz has many facets which want to be explored. Those who are guests here feel welcome in the lively city centre. This is what defines the comfortable atmosphere, but above all, the people and encounters too. Those who want to experience an interesting city off the beaten track have come to the right place – Linz. Visitors should be somewhat curious, have an interest in special cultural experiences and have the courage to indulge themselves, as a short trip to Linz will result in new experiences and found a friendship that this trip will make unforgettable.

Why Linz? Margit Noé, Donauschifffahrt Wurm & Noé GmbH “Linz surprises and invites curiosity. Particularly during a harbour cruise, visitors’ perspectives change and, from the Danube, they experience Linz with a completely new outlook, while simultaneously unwinding on the water!”
Eva Hofer, Austria Guide “The future is so important to us, and Linz takes care of it now. You have to come to Linz to love and understand the city.”
Tanja Waldhör, Hotel Manager, ibis Styles Linz “Linz is a city of arriving, feeling good, being at home. And we want our guests at ibis Styles to feel this way as well.”
Leonhard Gruber, Mural Harbor “Linz residents themselves are special, they are more approachable than residents of other state capitals. That was the first thing that struck me here.” Andreas Bauer, Ars Electronica Center Director “Linz is a city big enough to offer a diverse range of activities but is still small enough to meet people anywhere and at anytime. This means partners can quickly be found for new ideas. For the Ars Electronica Center, this means being part of a city that is prepared for new things.”
4
Genoveva Rückert, OÖ Kulturquartier curator “Linz may be a small city, but it has an unbelievable generosity. The special thing about it is the people, who are unbelievably open-minded and curious.”
Dietmar Kerschbaum, LIVA Artistic Board Director “Linz is a great, diverse city, whose beauties and qualities I have been able to discover in recent years. The Brucknerhaus – one of the most outstanding concert halls in Europe – offers a wide programme in one of the most beautiful places in the city, right on the Danube.”
Corinne Wandling, Head baker, K+K Hofbäckerei “Linz is still original, but is constantly developing. The people in business and hospitality have remained authentic. It makes me proud to help shape the city with K+K Hofbäckerei.”
Chris Müller, Director of development, organisation and artistic agendas, Tabakfabrik Linz “Although there is the concept of the Bilbao-effect in tourism circles, for me Linz embodies the Belmondoeffect. Linz, once a city of smoking chimneys and today a cosmopolitan, creative metropolis, is defined by its belief in shaping a better future, a beautiful world.” Hermann Schneider, Intendant Landestheater Linz “What makes Linz special for me is its great diversity. I enjoy walking down Wiener Straße as much as through the Old Town. I like the rural surroundings and that the city is historical, but is not restricted by tradition.”

The Danube in Upper Austria The Danube – one of Europe’s greatest storytellers – flows leisurely along, telling tales of times long ago, of powerful rulers and the local inhabitants’ wealth of legends and myths. The Danube knows so many of the stories that have shaped the land and its people since they came into being. There is much to discover in the Upper Austrian section of the river: the Danube traveller enjoys breathtaking views, walks legendary trails, explores the beautiful river landscape on the Danube Cycle Path, experiences the countryside rolling by from a boat and samples culinary delicacies.
DONAU-CULTURE The great river connecting Europe was and is used primarily as a transport route, not only for the conveyance of people and goods, but also for the exchange of culture and language. By exploring the Roman sites along the Danube, you get an idea of the significance the Danube had for the Romans as the natural border of the Danube limes. When the church was reorganised after the Roman period, numerous monasteries and abbeys were built by the Danube. With the Habsburg Monarchy, the Danube region enjoyed what was surely its most glorious time of prosperity. Empress Sisi, in particular, indulged her love of travelling by taking frequent trips along the Danube and she began her bridal journey by boat from Passau to Vienna.
DANUBE BOAT TRIP You can reach the opposite bank in a leisurely manner on board one of the Danube boats. Various stages on the Danube Cycle Path or the Donausteig hiking trail can also be covered by boat.
THE DANUBE BEND AT SCHLÖGEN The Danube bend at Schlögen is an archetypal meander. Here, the Danube makes two truly spectacular changes in direction. It’s worth stopping and going to the viewpoint on foot. A short walk takes you through the forest, after which you’ll be rewarded with an unobstructed view of this fascinating spectacle of nature.
DANUBE CYCLE PATH The famous Danube Cycle Path runs along the great river from Germany through Austria and on to Hungary. Cyclists can look forward to a peaceful, romantic and yet varied cycle path from Passau to Grein via Linz along the Upper Austrian section of the Danube. www.donauradweg.at www.donauradweg.at
DONAUSTEIG Over 450 km and 23 stages, the Donausteig hiking trail runs from Passau to Grein via Linz. On both sides of the Danube, the hiking trail, which was awarded the Austrian Hiking Quality Seal, provides breathtaking views of and perspectives on the great river and the unique landscape through which it flows. www.donausteig.com

FLORIAN www.stift-st-florian.at The Augustinian Priory of St. Florian is a place of fellowship and devotion, and, at the same time, a cultural focal point for the region. It was in this ecclesiastical community that Bruckner immersed himself deep in the world of music, first as a choirboy and later as an organist. It was here that he perfected his organ playing and created his first large-scale compositions. And it was here, in the vault beneath the organ, that he found his final resting place. Bruckner Organ at St. Florian Master organ builder Franz Xaver Krismann began building the Anton Bruckner Organ in 1770, which has been known as the “Bruckner Organ” since 1932. Over the course of time, it was enlarged and now comprises 4 manuals, 103 stops and 7,386 organ pipes. Tours of the Priory 1 May–18 October daily at 11 am, 1 pm and 3 pm. BRUCKNERHAUS www.brucknerhaus.at Its unique location on the Danube, its timelessly exquisite architecture by Finnish architects Heikki and Kaija Siren and above all the excellent acoustics of both of its halls make the Brucknerhaus in Linz, opened by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under Herbert von Karajan in 1974, one of the most attractive concert halls in the world. Each year from 4 September, Anton Bruckner’s birthday, to 11 October, the day of his death, the International Bruckner Festival takes place here in Linz. Leading orchestras and ensembles, celebrated conductors, world stars of opera and top soloists dedicate themselves to the work of Anton Bruckner, but also perform works by other composers, who nevertheless have a connection to Bruckner. All year round the Brucknerhaus Linz offers a diverse programme of classical music, jazz, world music, literature and much more. The 2019/2020 programme is dedicated to the theme of “Heimat” (homeland), a term that can mean many things. Music, too, can be a homeland or at least the medium through which homely feelings and the longing for them can be expressed. This is examined by the Brucknerhaus Linz through their interesting programme. Franz Welser Möst and the Cleveland Orchestra, Isabelle Faust and II Giardino Armonico, Markus Poschner and the Bruckner Orchestra Linz, the Saxon State Orchestra of Dresden and the Emerson String Quartet are just a few of the numerous international classical stars that will perform in the Brucknerhaus. For jazz, concerts with Dianne Reeves, Benjamin Schmid, David Murray and many more are the highlights of this season. Particularly popular is the Musical Advent Calendar Musikalischer Adventkalender. This offers the opportunity to enjoy free entry to advent concert evenings and to experience the special atmosphere of the Brucknerhaus. voestalpine factory premises and get up close and personal with the most modern plant in the world of steel. This enables visitors to experience the production plants for themselves as they come to the blast furnace, hot rolling mill or Automotive Components. A tour of the plant is only possible as part of a guided tour. The building is reminiscent of a periscope and opens up a unique perspective on the voestalpine factory premises. VOESTALPINE CONTEMPORARY HISTORY MUSEUM www.voestalpine.com/zeitgeschichte “One step ahead” is voestalpine’s motto and philosophy. With this museum, the corporation takes a look back – into its own history – and thereby carefully and extensively explores the dark chapter of its early years. voestalpine is doing this out of responsibility for its own history and in the knowledge that only those who confront their pasts can also look towards the future. The museum is dedicated to the forced labourers who were made to work by the Nazis in Linz for the “Reichswerke Hermann Göring AG Berlin”. It stands for responsible interaction with the corporation’s history and critically confronts this dark chapter of Austria’s past. LINZ REGION: KIRCHSCHLAG Linz’s sun terrace
Once celebrated by Aldabert Stifter, the fine, fog-free mountain air and the beautiful location close to forests with a magical panoramic view are thoroughly appreciated by many visitors looking for sun and fresh air. On clear days, the 22 metre-high observation point of Breitenstein, located 955 metres above sea-level, offers a glorious panorama from the dark edge of the Bohemian forest to the silver summits of the Alps. The always surprisingly good and long-lasting snow conditions in winter and the heavenly peace in summer make Kirchschlag an attractive excursion destination and winter sports resort, close to the city. Whether a leisurely country outing or wild adventurousness – Kirchschlag offers it all.
Adalbert Stifter in Kirchschlag – Metz-Villa Kirchschlag, in Mühlviertel, was the second most important resort for Adalbert Stifter after Lackenhäuser, Bavaria, as he had close connections there during the last three years of his life. Stifter was often invited to the villa, built in 1861, as a guest by his friend, builder Johann Metz, who had also built the Stifter residence in Linz. In 2004, the Metz-Villa was purchased by the municipality of Kirchschlag and has served as a multipurpose centre since 2018. St. Anna Kirche The St. Anna church on the Kirchschlag village square became a place of pilgrimage early on. Completely destroyed by a fire in 1692, the church has been renovated several times over the centuries and equipped with beautiful, stylish holy figurines and paintings.

HIKING ROUTES IN KIRCHSCHLAG Kirchschlag and its beautiful surroundings around Breitenstein are a popular excursion destination and offer great hiking possibilities with various route lengths and requirements. 1 . In Adalbert Stifter’s footsteps: A well-balanced mix of walking and hiking takes in the sights of Kirchschlag and passes some important historical landmarks. Starting point: Ortsplatz Kirchschlag Length: 40 minutes 2. A view of Linz and the Alps: This almost “rural walk” leads to the Kirchschlag sun terrace, until it turns west. The route back run almost parallel and gives a magnificent view of Linz. Starting point: Ortsplatz Kirchschlag Length: 30 minutes 3. Adalbert Stifter hiking route: A vast slope with meadows and forests leads into the Haselgraben valley, and the landscape is as idyllic as you would expect. A portrait of the poet marks the way. Route: Kirchschlag – Gasthaus Wildberghang – Wildberg – Rudolfsquelle – Badhaus; Length: 2 hrs Shorter route length: 1 hour
GETTING HERE From Linz/Urfahr, drivers should follow Leonfeldner Straße, which merges into a road towards Bad Leonfelden. After about 8 kilometres, take the turn-off towards Kirchschlag. The winding Bezirkstraße passes Riedl and Rohrach and reaches Ortsplatz after about 7 kilometres. Drivers who would rather use the mainly straight main roads should stay on the road 126 after the signposted turn-off for about another 6 kilometres, past the Wildberg ruins to Glasau. The exit to the left leads directly to Kirchschlag, 3 kilometres on Bezirkstraße.
