SPANISH INSTITUTE FOR GLOBAL

EDUCATION

AND THE FUTURE CHALLENGES OF STUDY ABROAD

AND LANGUAGE LEARNING

1.

How does declining interest impact education abroad, and what role should advisors and providers play in meeting these challenges?

occurs when students step beyond their own worldview.

The decline in interest in Study Abroad is not just a matter of cost or accessibility; it reflects a shift in the perception of its value in an era where digital experiences seem to replace real-world immersion.

The challenge for advisors and providers is not just to promote Study Abroad, but to redefine it: Why leave your comfort zone when information, language, and global connections seem just a click away? Because there is no digital substitute for real-life engagement.

Traveling abroad is not just about acquiring knowledge—it is also about navigating uncertainty, adapting to different perspectives, and thriving in unfamiliar environments. In an increasingly interconnected but polarized world, international experience fosters the kind of cultural fluency, emotional intelligence, and resilience that employers and global institutions value. AI may translate words, but it cannot replicate the depth of face-to-face human interaction, the nuances of intercultural collaboration, or the personal transformation that

At Spanish Institute, we do not simply offer a semester abroad; we integrate students into an academic, cultural, and professional community. From programs at three partner universities to Faculty-Directed experiences and specialized projects, every student undergoes an immersive process with real impact.

Additionally, not all students seek a purely linguistic knowledge, which is why at Spanish Institute, we offer English-language programs focused on exploring Spain’s history, economy, innovation, and sustainability—broadening participation beyond traditional language programs while ensuring students develop the adaptability and global awareness needed in today’s world.

2. Can AI enhance language learning, or is it contributing to its decline?

AI accelerates translation but does not replace human connection or real language learning. The question is not whether AI will replace language learning, but how education must evolve to leverage technology without losing language’s cognitive and cultural value.

At the same time, even if language learning is no longer the primary motivation for studying abroad, it remains a powerful skill that signals intelligence, adaptability, and cultural competence—qualities that set candidates apart in an increasingly competitive job market. Learning a new language enhances cognitive flexibility, creates new neural connections, and fosters a deeper understanding of the world. It is a skill that will continue to open doors for career opportunities, global mobility, or personal growth. While the trend may shift, students who acquire a second language will always have a professional and personal edge.

Spanish Institute addresses this challenge through experiential learning and real-world interaction. We do not just teach Spanish; we make it a lived experience through creative projects, personal coaching, book co-authorship, and participation in academic journals. A language is not just learned; it is inhabited. Neuroscience has shown that language learning transforms the brain, improves decisionmaking, and develops intercultural skills that AI cannot replicate. Our goal is not to compete with AI but to provide an education that AI will never be able to replace.

3. How are host institutions evolving to meet the needs of U.S. students abroad?

Host institutions must go beyond traditional teaching and become academic and professional experimentation spaces. Today’s students seek flexible, interdisciplinary learning with tangible realworld impact.

Spanish Institute has evolved by offering more dynamic programs connected to professional and social spheres. From studying abroad with local universities to professional internships in companies and NGOs, we create experiences integrating academic immersion with real-world action. Additionally, we tailor content to different student profiles: business, arts, sustainability, entrepreneurship, and social sciences students find customized programs beyond language instruction and serve as a bridge between education and professional life.

4. Are internships and service-learning still relevant, or is project-based learning the future of education abroad?

Project-based learning does not replace internships and service-learning; it redefines them. Students no longer seek to add experiences to their résumés but to engage in learning that creates real impact.

Spanish Institute has integrated the Independent Study Project (ISP) in response to this shift, allowing students to develop applied research, creative projects, or professional experiences in key sectors. From collaborating with NGOs to learning from local artists and entrepreneurs, the ISP ensures that each student transforms their expertise into a concrete and meaningful project.

Internships and service-learning are not just options but essential experiences that enrich critical thinking and global awareness. What students learn in our classrooms is applied in hospitals, social enterprises, art studios, human rights organizations, and more. The future of study abroad is not a one-size-fits-all model, but the ability to tailor education to each student, each goal, and each global reality.

Beyond its academic benefits, study abroad plays a crucial role in society by bringing people together, opening minds and hearts, and breaking down

walls and borders. In an increasingly polarized world, the human need to unite, collaborate, and create a peaceful future has never been greater. Study abroad fosters this connection—peacefully and humbly—by encouraging understanding, mutual coexistence, and shared purpose.

Interestingly, in Spanish, the word humilde (humble) shares its root with humano (human) and humus (earth), reminding us that true learning and connection require keeping our feet on the ground and walking in truth. Study abroad embodies this spirit, grounding students in the reality of our shared world while inspiring them to break boundaries and build bridges.
