A LEARNING SPACE LIKE NOWHERE ELSE

THE PEDAGOGY: ACQUIRING SKILLS FOR LIFE

Minerva’s academic philosophy

is based on the concept that students should learn habits of mind and fundamental concepts in order to acquire an skill that allows them to learn about any subject, at any time. The University is just a starting point in their learning process, which will continue during the rest of their lives

A LEARNING SPACE LIKE NOWHERE ELSE

THAT WHAT WAS NEWS THIS MORNING, IS OLD BY LUNCHTIME…

STUDENT-ORIENTED WITH EMPHASIS IN IMPARTING PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE that prepares students for success in any career – even one that does not yet exist. Minerva focuses on developing abilities in think critically and creative, to communicate effectively and to work well with others. Instead of memorizing facts, students are provided with a set of practical and adaptable skills together with an understanding of how to apply them in the world.

KNOW, MORE TAN ANYONE, THAT TODAY’S CAREERS DOESN’T ENSURE TOMORROW’S JOBS And having lived that in first person, they assume the role of researchers whose main goal will be to make a clear and scientific path for future generations to succeed in fast paced life. To help them acquired those skills.

The ability to “learn how to learn” in a fast change world will be a must, an this is something that Millennials will be able to transmit Minerva’s future students. GOAL Design the campus of a university which main feature is not having one, while enhancing the role of Millennials as future researchers

THE STRUCTURE THAT SUPPORTS THE IDEA

AN INFLATABLE, BUBBLE LIKE PAVILION

Minerva’s pop-up campus

idea rises from the re-utilization of an existing pavilion designed by BIG Architects which can accomplish the two main goals of the project: to be permanent and fully transportable while allocates a flexible program.

THE CHALLENGE OF LEARNING IN CORNERS

THE FOUR RESEARCH-BASED CONERSTONES

“Innovation by users tends to be widely distributed rather than concentrated among just a very few very innovative users. It is important for userinnovators to find ways to combine and leverage their efforts. Users achieve this by engaging in many forms of cooperation”

Democratizing Innovation, ERIC VON HIPPEL

THE CHALLENGE OF LEARNING IN CORNERS

3 1

THINKING CRITICALLY

> FORMAL ANALYSIS BY LEARNING HOW YO: _formulate _analyze _solve complex challenges

2

THINKING CREATIVELY

> EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS BY APPROACHING: _ tasks _ problems _ situations with openness to alternatives

COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY > MULTIMODAL COMMUNICATION BY GAINING PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE IN: _ public speaking _ visual communication _ design _ debate _ artistic expression

4

INTERACTING EFFECTIVELY > COMPLEX SYSTEMS BY UNDERSTANDING HOW: _ multiple-causality _ group collaboration _ negotiation _ leadership works in humans

THE CHALLENGE OF LEARNING IN CORNERS

1. THINKING CRITICALLY WORKING WITH PATTERNS The activity of this corner is focused on learning a strategy that allows anyone to convey information through a patter method. In the case of the students, they will be consciously encouraged to learn how this strategy works at different levels, how they can analyze and solve complex challenges by applying a non-specific tool developed as a skill, and finally, they test their knowledge by introducing a kind of “open flipped classroom” to the community.

THE CHALLENGE OF LEARNING IN CORNERS

2. THINKING CREATIVELY CREATIVE THINKING WITH… Learning what the most innovative and creative minds brought to this world is not new. Plenty of great minds have challenged paradigms, opened windows into worlds we didn’t even know existed, and produced innovations that have persisted through time. However, learn how they learn and experience how they think is something different. That is why in this corner students and publics will dive into the minds of the world’s titanic thinkers to acquire skills that allow them to think creatively.

THE CHALLENGE OF LEARNING IN CORNERS

3. COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY THE POWER OF STORYTELLING You can be born as a great speaker, or you can learn the skills to become one by learning your own potentials and use them to communicate with/to others. There is more than one way to transmit ideas effectively, and this is what this corner is about. The power of storytelling aims to deliver a comprehensive tool to transmit knowledge on different topics through different resources: interactive screens, bespoken graphs, discussion spots, etc.

THE CHALLENGE OF LEARNING IN CORNERS

4. INTERACTING EFFECTIVELY WE RISE BY LIFTING OTHERS It's simply: when you help others come up, you are indirectly lifting yourself, and that is something that we all can learn. Working in teams is only worth if we do it effectively, so all the parts involve gaining equal benefits. To achieve that goal, students and publics, in general, must learn how to work in groups, to know themselves by knowing others and to understand that ”you plus me” it will always be “3”.

PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT AND CORNERSTONES

NEXT STOP: WORKING WITH PATTERNS

MINERVA TAKES YOU TO…

BUENOS AIRES! Each cornerstone will have the ability to change from time to time and from city to city Every time that Minerva lands in any of the 7 locations, a different corner will be co-created with the students. In the next example, THINKING CRITICALLY involved the methodology of LEARNING WITH PATTERNS by introducing an activity named as “BOTANY IN A DAY”, inspired by the research done by Thomas. J. Elpel and in partnership with Buenos Aires Japanese Garden.

HOW CAN SKILLS BE ACQUIRED IN THIS CORNER?

HOW CAN THIS CORNERSTONE LOOK LIKE?

HOW CAN THIS CORNERSTONE LOOK LIKE?

USER’S INTERACTION WITH THE SPACE CORNER The level of complexity can be speeded up or slowed down depending on the group of user’s involved

PATTERNS CAGE In this structure the users will have to match different patterns by putting the correct plant in the missing space

The activity will be guided by the students and also supported graphically

HOW CAN THIS CORNERSTONE LOOK LIKE?

The engagement is thought to be done by groups of different users, like a family, so the experience is more reachable

INFORMATION TRUCK In this structure the elements will be exhibited along with the information of the activity

INFORMATION “WINDOWS” User’s can learn as much as they want, since all the information about plants is convey in multiple ways

HOW CAN THIS CORNERSTONE LOOK LIKE?

THE FIFTH CORNER: FOOD FOR THOUGHT

“Think of new languages and visions with an exploratory aim”

Design-driven innovation, ROBERTO VERGANTI

THE DIFFERENCE THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENTE

THE DIFFERENCE THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENTE

FOOD FOR THOUGHT MAIN FEATURES: FLEXIBLE AND UNIQUE

The fifth corner is the space where all the corners can get together

Co-designed with the students to create Minerva’s own language by implementing a bespoken branding strategy

Flexible enough to allocate several activities and change its layout when it is needed

A humble spot where student can find themselves as if they were in the living room of their homes

THE DIFFERENCE THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENTE

ACTIVITIES: ALL THAT YOU CAN IMAGINE!

Students can work together or have informal meetings

Millennial's experts from different disciplines will come and have lectures in this corner

The public’s attention will be direct related to this corner: by arousing the people’s curiosity, public engagement can be enhanced

The best one: a fab lab where everything can be printed (yes, food as well)

THE DIFFERENCE THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENTE

USER’S INTERACTION WITH THE CORNER

A CORNER IN THE CORNER A space where users can drink a coffee, have a meeting or simple explore the hanging menu

A SPOT FOR CURIOSITY In this area students can hang out or have informal meetings, while user’s passing by can read the banners with information about future events and activities at Minerva

THE DIFFERENCE THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENTE

3D PRINTER + LASER CUTTER A portable 3D Printer along with a laser cutter will be the responsible of attracting users and encourage them to take part of Minerva’s Public Engagement Program

PUSH UP, PUSH DOWN The windows structure as well with the benches can be pushed up or down to allow the users create their own space

THE DIFFERENCE THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENTE

THE DIFFERENCE THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENTE

CORNER’S FLEXIBILITY – LECTURE: LEARNING BOTANY FROM AN EXPERT

POP-UP AUDITORIUM All the furniture and structures are movable and adaptable. They can be relocated according to the activity developed. In this case, when a lecture takes place, a pop-up auditorium can be configured.

THE DIFFERENCE THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENTE

CORNER’S UNIQUENESS – BRANDING STRATEGY

F4T: TARGET MENU

A menu that changes each semester with the corners and that is aligned with the activities proposed for public engagement. Every piece of food is a fab opportunity for engagement and cocreation.

THE DIFFERENCE THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENTE

CORNER’S UNIQUENESS – BRANDING STRATEGY

CORNER: ADVERTISING FOR AWAKING CURIOSITY

PAVILION: BLACKBOARD OF EVENTS

Every corner of the campus is graphically designed so a unique branding strategy can be read as Minerva’s universal language. Independently on where the school is located, all the students can feel identified as well as publics in general, who will see who a pop-up structure will suddenly land into their daily landscape.

THE DIFFERENCE THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENTE

Everything you had ever dream of can be fabricated, printed or cut in this corner.

CORNER: ADVERTISING FOR AWAKING CURIOSITY

Every time an individual engage with Minerva, a piece of learning is taken with him.
