PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE • 5 www.lionsrugby.co.za

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF SA RUGBY I WOULD LIKE to welcome everyone here today to the game. The Currie Cup has been part of the South African rugby landscape for as long as the game have been played here. In fact, it is fair to say that the Currie Cup, despite various format changes over the decades, has been the backbone for the game of rugby union in South Africa. The tournament has grown in stature and into the hearts of South Africans and the fact that you are here today still supporting your team in this iconic competition bears testimony to that. For all these years and decades, the game has nurtured and moulded players, coaches, referees, administrators and indeed, fans of this great game and rugby is in a better place because of that. The Currie Cup is truly #WhereLegendsRise.

This year, rugby will yet again be played in all corners of South Africa, thanks to the Currie Cup competition. We want to thank all our sponsors of the Currie Cup for their contribution to help the competition remain in the forefront of the hearts and minds of our rugby supporters. Sponsors have become the adrenalin competitions like this need to thrill and grow the game and we thank you for that. Now, please go out and support your team with all the passion and pride you have. That is what Currie Cup rugby is all about. Regards, OREGAN HOSKINS SA RUGBY PRESIDENT

WELCOME TO EMIRATES AIRLINE PARK, HOME OF THE XEROX GOLDEN LIONS AND SO RAPIDLY the Currie Cup season is upon us once again. We need however, to first acknowledge our Super 18 performance by our team .Our campaign in the Super 18 competition has ranked us amongst the most successful in the Union’s illustrious history . We all salute coach Ackers and his coaching staff for a magnificent endeavour that has earned us respect throughout the rugby world. We did not overcome the final hurdle but so many factors counted against us on the day. Despite the loss we all applaud the success of our team for this year’s magnificent performance. The team had set the goals and surpassed them. We have now set the standard for the road ahead. Thank you to our medical staff, Rudolf Straueli, Altmann Allers and everyone involved in this victorious season. This was really special and becomes a story of

humbleness with a fierce determination by a team who few gave a chance. Well done, you young men of great courage, you are our Champions. Welcome to Hein Mentz and his Pumas team to Emirates Airline Park, and also welcome to our Currie cup squad. Welcome to our gracious Sponsors as well as Altmann Allers and our esteemed CEO Rudolf Straeuli.Your support is most valued. For me the Currie Cup will always have a special place and I trust that the display today by both teams will endorse this historically great competition. Good luck to both teams for this afternoon. MESSAGE FROM THE CEO OF BYTES DOCUMENT SOLUTIONS As the defending Currie Cup champions, the Xerox Lions Rugby team has set a very high standard. Runners up in this competition two years ago, champions last year and finalists already this year in the prestigious Super Rugby competition, the Xerox Lions are clearly South African rugby’s standard bearers. I am extremely proud that Xerox is once again involved in sponsoring this team. Ours is a long and fruitful association that can be traced back to 1993. The union had become Currie Cup champions for the first time in two decades and I have no doubt that the current side is once more poised to achieve even greater things in the future. Both Xerox and the Lions boast a long and proud history. We are both fiercely committed to performance. We are dedicated and demonstrate a willingness to go the extra mile to achieve success. It is this culture of excellence and performance that makes our two organisations such a perfect fit and it’s a privilege to have our name associated with this team. As the Golden Lions gear up for the opening game in defence of their Currie Cup trophy, I would like to wish them everything of the best for this tournament. All of us at Xerox and Bytes Document Solutions, and all your passionate fans are counting on you to keep

the Cup at Emirates Airline Park again this year. It would also be remiss of me not to congratulate the team on a fantastic Super Rugby campaign. Even though it faltered at the final hurdle, it demonstrated to the rest of the rugby world exactly what can be achieved by applying the right combination of skill, tactics and bravery. Also, a quick word of acknowledgement to the numerous Lions players who made their Springbok debuts this year, and to those selected for the forthcoming Rugby Championship matches. We look forward to watching you take your wonderful form into the Green and Gold as well. I am excited by the blend of youth and experience evident in this team. It indicates that this side will only get better and continue to improve in quality. It is clear to me that the future for the GLRU is a bright one. As a company that has always been a leader in our field, we take enormous pride in our continuing sponsorship of the Lions rugby team, which - as Currie Cup holders and Super Rugby finalists – has proven to be one of the leaders in South African sport. NOW JANCKE’S DAD DOES THE

SUPPORTING! By Monique Naude Being a female rugby player in a world dominated by male players does not phase young Jancke van Tonder at all. In fact, it drives her to work harder for the dream she had since she was a little girl, watching from the side-lines as her famous father ran out onto the field. It is the same field she has now made her home.  And her father Cheese van Tonder, a Junior Springbok in the days when they were not junior internationals but regarded as on the fringe of the Bok side – very much like the Emerging Springboks of today – is now on the sidelines when his daughter plays. Jancke started playing rugby when she was 15 years old. She is currently in Helpmekaar Hoërskool, and has been selected for the Golden Lions’ U16 girls’ team which she also captains. Having the support from her parents means the world to Jancke. “My dad is at every practice and every game and it means everything to me. Although my mom was initially hesitant

of my choice to be a rugby player I have proved to her, and my dad, that this is where my passion lies.” Cheese, is Jancke’s dad and a mentor for this young girl, both on the field and off. “He has become my personal coach. He inspires me every day to not only be a better rugby player, but also be the best person I can be.” Jancke was ecstatic when she learned she had been selected to represent the Lions. When she was later named as captain, she saw how her dreams and future plans were falling into place. “I was very excited, but I also experienced a sense of peace. I knew that my dreams of a successful rugby career had started. “Being named captain was such a rush – I believed that this was my time to show who I was as a person, a player, but also as a leader.” “Being the captain was a challenge, as the players did not really know each

JANCKE WITH HER FATHER CHEESE VAN TONDER, a nonnonsense and also mobile flank for Transvaal between 1988 and 1994, by which time the team had become the Lions. Cheese was a household name in South Africa in those years. He captained Transvaal in 1988. Then, when he played for the

Free State before returning to the Rooibontes, he represented that union in over 50 matches and captained them as well. In 1992, when the ban on South African rugby was lifted and the All Blacks and Australia visited our shores, he played in the national trials and also represented the Junior Springboks.

other, but I enjoyed every second of it! “My favourite memory of playing with this team was winning against the Pumas. In that game we finally felt like a team, and all our plays just seemed to work out perfectly!” Jancke strongly believes that more opportunities must be created to open up a field where girls can have the chance to play rugby in schools. “I feel that all girls should have the opportunity to pursue a rugby career, if that is what they want to do. Schools should put more effort into developing girls who want to play this sport.” Even though it is not always easy to start a girls’ team at school level, there are still options to pursue in this situation, she believes. “Rugby unions encourage the schools to get involved in their development programmes, and they send some of their players to encourage participation in this sport. I believe if more female players made appearances, girls would be more intrigued to get involved in the game. “Now that rugby is included in the Olympic Games, I believe it will broaden the field of women’s rugby. More women will use the opportunity to get involved at provincial level, giving them the chance to play on national level.” Jancke feels it is a lot harder for women to get noticed as a rugby player as they have not been playing it as long as men.

There is not much to measure them by, and therefore it might be harder to choose the best. “I think the reason why it’s so hard for women to make it big in the rugby is because there is a prejudice that only boys can play rugby at school level. Girls therefore miss out on these fundamental years of development.” The future is extremely bright for this 16-year-old.  After school she wants to study sport and pursue her blossoming rugby career. “My dream is to study sport psychology in New Zealand or America. I will not always be able to play the sport I love, but nothing can stop me to keep working in this field. One day I want to look back on my life and I want to say I have achieved all of my goals, that I made my dream a reality!” They’re big dreams for this passionate girl, but she is excited for all the challenges that she will face. Having her parents’ support makes everything worthwhile. “I choose to play rugby because of the love I have for this sport, but a small part of me knows that by choosing to follow in my dad’s footsteps, I hope to make him prouder than he ever thought possible. “While he unfortunately did not have the chance to run out in the green and gold, my hope is that one day I can finish that journey for him. I know nothing would make me happier to see my dad proudly supporting his number one supporter!”
