PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE • 5 www.lionsrugby.co.za

MESSAGE FROM THE ACTING PRESIDENT OF SA RUGBY I WOULD LIKE to welcome everyone here today to the game. The Currie Cup has been part of the South African rugby landscape for as long as the game has been played here. In fact, it is fair to say that the Currie Cup, despite various format changes over the decades, has been the backbone for the game of rugby union in South Africa. The tournament has grown in stature and into the hearts of South Africans and the fact that you are here today still supporting your team in this iconic competition bears testimony to that. For all these years and decades, the game has nurtured and moulded players, coaches, referees, administrators and indeed, fans of this great game and rugby is in a better place because of that. The Currie Cup is truly #WhereLegendsRise.

This year, rugby will yet again be played in all corners of South Africa, thanks to the Currie Cup competition. We want to thank all our sponsors of the Currie Cup for their contribution to help the competition remain in the forefront of the hearts and minds of our rugby supporters. Sponsors have become the adrenalin competitions like this need to thrill and grow the game and we thank you for that. Now, please go out and support your team with all the passion and pride you have. That is what Currie Cup rugby is all about. Regards, MARK ALEXANDER SA RUGBY ACTING PRESIDENT

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE • 7 www.lionsrugby.co.za

WELCOME TO EMIRATES AIRLINE PARK, HOME OF THE XEROX GOLDEN LIONS THE CURRIE CUP Is where legends are made and most of the current crop of Springboks have earned their stripes in this competition, which dates back to the late 1800s. The very first final was at Newlands in 1939, when Transvaal, captained by Fanie Louw, beat Western Province. The referee was Boy Louw, the great Springbok and Fanie’s brother. This year we have a revamped Currie Cup competition consisting of nine teams in the Premier Division and six in the First Division. The Golden Lions are the proud champions of this coveted Cup and today we welcome the Boland Cavaliers at Emirates Airline Park as well as the junior teams of Western Province who will do battle against the Xerox Golden

Lions and our Under-19 and Under-21 teams. To Johan Ackermann and his charges, good luck for the season. We have faith that you will once again make us proud, as you did in the Super Rugby competition. A match day program message will not be complete without a huge thanks to the sponsors that make it all possible. To our team sponsor, Xerox, it is always a privilege to have you on board as our main sponsor and to all the other sponsors, you are all part of the Lions family. Enjoy the day with us. REGARDS Kevin de Klerk. President: GLRU

BYTES DOCUMENT SOLUTIONS • 9 www.lionsrugby.co.za

MESSAGE FROM THE CEO OF BYTES DOCUMENT SOLUTIONS THEY SAY THAT it is always easier winning a trophy than it is defending your title, an adage that has proven to be true more often than not. However, the Xerox Golden Lions, the current Currie Cup champions, are certainly working hard to change that perception in their quest to keep hold of the trophy. In the first round of the Currie Cup, the Xerox Lions recorded a thumping 6826 victory over the Pumas at Emirates Airlines Park. However, last week, they were brought back to earth by the Griquas in Kimberley. The Griquas have arguably caused the upset of this year’s Currie Cup competition by beating the Golden Lions 30-24. The Lions are also in new territory now and their Springbok recognition means they are no longer playing the Currie Cup with all their top players, but Saturday’s defeat was their first since the 2014 Currie Cup final. Indeed, it is a long time since the Lions last lost a game to any South African team in either Currie Cup or Super Rugby, so the Griquas achievement was a noteworthy one. But the Xerox Lions is a team with a long

and very proud history which includes 10 triumphs in the Currie Cup and I have no doubt that today we will see the best the Xerox Lions have to offer. It is also a young team growing stronger with each game and offering a blend of experience that is unsurpassed in the game. It is one of the most exciting teams to watch and we look forward to sharing many more moments of wonderful rugby here at Emirates Airline Park. All of us at Xerox and Bytes Document Solutions are proud of the team’s achievements to date, and expect last season’s Currie Cup victory and this season’s Super Rugby final to serve as a solid foundation from which the Golden Lions can reach for glory for years to come. We thank all our incredible fans for their unwavering support. They have been a key ingredient to the continued success of this team. We wish the Lions the best for tonight’s game. We are with you all the way. JOHAN BASSON CEO BYTES DOCUMENT SOLUTIONS

THE 2016 GOLD CUP PIRATES ONLY GLRU TEAM AS RAIDERS MISS OUT By Wim van der Berg THE GOLDEN LIONS will have only the one team, Pirates, in this year’s Gold Cup (formerly the Communications Cup) competition.

Rhinos (Limpopo), Rustenburg Impala (Leopards) who won the title in 2014 and were runners-up last year, and Evergreens (SWD).

Raiders fought valiantly for one of the two remaining spots after they were denied direct entry into the competition when Pirates bettered them in last year’s Pirates Grand Challenge Competition, but lost their play-off match against College Rovers in Durban last Saturday, 16-32.

The Gold Cup kicks off on September 10, with the 20 clubs once again competing in a Rugby World Cupstyle format consisting of eight pool matches per week for five weeks up until October 8.

Raiders, who represented the union at the 2013 and 2015 Community Cup tournaments, were defeated in the semi-final of this year’s Pirates Grand Challenge competition, losing 25-33 to Pirates. PIRATES HAVE A TOUGH POOL. Their adversaries in Pool B are Windhoek Wanderers, Northam

The top two from each group will progress to the quarter-finals a week later. All knockout matches, including the televised semi-finals (October 22) and final (October 29) will be hosted at participating clubs. PIRATES PLAY THEIR TWO HOME matches on the first two weekends of the competition, September 10 and 17, against Windhoek Wanderers and Northam Rhinos respectively.

PIRATES GRAND CHALLENGE THE TROPHY WON IN CLUB ‘SURGES’ SINCE 1889 By Wim van der Berg A LOOK AT the winners of the Pirates Grand Challenge Trophy – originally called the Imroth Trophy – shows that there is a good spread of winners through the years. It is also noticeable that Pirates, Diggers, Roodepoort, NWU-Pukke and now the University of Johannesburg have won the competition in “surges”. UJ, now with seven wins from the last ten competitions, follow the Pukke, who have won the competition six times in the seven years after joining the Golden Lions leagues. Three clubs hold the record of five successive titles. Diggers achieved it twice (1895-’99 and 1958-’62). The other two clubs are Pirates (18901894) and Pukke (2002-’06) while Roodepoort won the competition eight times in 10 years between1985 and 1994. Diggers have been winners on 27 occasions and shared the trophy twice. • When Pirates beat the Pukke in Potchefstroom in the final of the Pirates Grand Challenge in 2001 the celebrations continued on their bus back

to Johannesburg and into the night when they arrived in Johannesburg. It was only on Monday morning when they had to return the trophy handed them after the match, that the realisation came: the Pirates Cup, first played for in 1889 and which was on the bus, is missing! The growing panic of the Pirates players and management was however unfounded. Good (then club) manager that he is, Pieter Visser had taken care of the trophy – and calmly broke the news when, eventually, he was contacted with the news that the trophy was missing!

THE PIRATES GRAND CHALLENGE UJ WIN SEVENTH TITLE IN TEN YEARS By Wim van der Berg The University of Johannesburg (UJ) this year won the Pirates Grand Challenge title for the seventh time in ten years, with only the NWU-Pukke (2008, 2009) and Roodepoort (2013) breaking their sequence. UJ beat Pirates 41-19 in the 2016 final. They also won the three of the other four league finals – all of them against the Pukke, who won the U21 title. In addition to this near clean-sweep, UJ Soweto were crowned champions in the Senior Grand Challenge Under-20 competition. GERMISTON SIMMER, IN THEIR FIRST final since 1992, took their chances well and beat Diggers 24-21 to be crowned Senior Grand Challenge champions.
