PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Welcome to Emirates Airline Park for the 2015 Absa Currie Cup! Welcome to Emirates Airline Park for the 2015 Absa Currie Cup! Thank you for joining us here this evening! A warm welcome to the Steval Pumas as well as all of our most valued supporters. It is great to host you at our world-class venue once again. Both of tonight’s teams have kicked off their Absa Currie Cup campaign in impressive fashion, as they have recorded good wins in the opening round of this year’s tournament. More impressively, the Xerox Golden Lions shone away from home in Port Elizabeth against the EP Kings last weekend. Congratulations to coach Johan Ackermann and his charges on this solid start. We are confident that this will be extended through into this evening’s match! I have always placed an immense value on the Absa Currie Cup as a tournament where great opportunities are presented to all players, in particular our young and upcoming stars. This is a special competition with a great deal of history and we are privileged to be a part of it once again. We extend our sincere thanks to equity partner Altmann Allers for his constant support. Additionally, a big thanks to our title sponsor Xerox; it is wonderful to have you on board for another Absa Currie Cup tournament. To our other sponsors and partners, namely Emirates, Bidvest, Canterbury, Huawei, Jonsson, Sun International, Tsogo Sun, USN, Vox, 947 and Media 24, we are always grateful for your support! Enjoy this year’s competition and, remember, please help us to keep the Xerox Golden Lions profile where it belongs and help us to stamp out all forms of abuse and racism. Remember it’s not black or white but Red and White! We are also STRONGLY opposed to booing in our stadium and want to encourage supporters to keep all forms of the game clean and show respect for the opposition. xerox message

xerox: Message from the Team Title Sponsor It is my pleasure to welcome you here today to enjoy the efforts of a team that we are so proud to be associated with – the Xerox Golden Lions. The team thrilled the fans with their open style of play during the Vodacom Super Rugby competition, when they were led by their inspirational captain Warren Whiteley, now selected to represent the Springboks in the build up to the Rugby World Cup. He will be sorely missed, but the culture of winning that he instilled in the team will surely live on throughout the Absa Currie Cup tournament with his outstanding replacement, flanker Jaco Kriel. Congratulations Jaco, we look forward to seeing more of those line-breaking carries from you with lots of tries! We would also like to congratulate Elton Jantjies and Franco Mostert for being invited to join the Springbok squad. A special word of congratulations to Lionel Mapoe who also celebrated his Springbok debut at Emirates Airline Park just a few weeks ago! Last season the fans turned out in numbers to support the Xerox Golden Lions every time they played at Emirates Park and it was your support that helped the team drive their way through to that final at Newlands. This year let’s give the Xerox Golden Lions even more support and encouragement as they strive to bring the Currie Cup home, where it truly belongs. Johan Basson CEO of Bytes Document Solutions

coach’s corner: Johan Ackermann By: Tarryn Steenekamp What are your goals as a team for this year’s Absa Currie Cup competition? I believe any team will say they want to win the Currie Cup, but we have a process that we focus on, rather than simply focusing on winning the competition. If we follow the process, week-byweek and play to a high standard that we have set as a group, then hopefully the rest will look after itself. How do you feel the team has matured as a group since last year’s competition? Having participated in the 2014 Currie Cup and a Super Rugby campaign or two, most of the players are more experienced and mature simply because they know now what to expect, and what it takes to reach a certain level physically and mentally. That will help us, but in the end we lost 13 players after this year’s Super Rugby tournament and there are a few young players that must feed off the more ‘senior’ group. Hopefully the entire team will show the necessary grit and composure required. As you have alluded to, you lost several players at the end of this year’s Vodacom Super Rugby tournament as they shifted overseas on loan deals or have been drafted into the Springbok setup. What are your plans with regards to bringing through new talent into the Senior group and how do you think this will benefit the team in both the short and long term? I think for now it is a loss of experience but, what will be great is we will be able to increase our depth in stages and that is something crucial for 10 www.lionsrugby.co.za

us. This is specifically helpful looking ahead to next year’s Super Rugby competition as, during such a lengthy and intense competition such as that, it is great if you are able to rotate the players and keep the entire squad fresh. You have selected a new captain in Jaco Kriel for the Absa Currie Cup competition as regular incumbent Warren Whiteley is still involved with the Springboks. How has Jaco stepped into this new role and what characteristics make him a good leader? Jaco has done exceptionally well. He showed his aptitude in the pre-season in the way he was able to take on added responsibility. Following last weekend’s opening Currie Cup game against the EP Kings, it was wonderful to receive a compliment from the referee regarding Jaco’s demeanour. He was impressed with how Jaco had addressed him during the game. Additionally, Jaco is a senior player and has been involved with Lions Rugby since his junior days. He is leading by example in the way he trains and plays and has thus acquired the respect of his teammates. He is also a calm guy and is able to stay cool under pressure. There is a feeling amongst the public that the Currie Cup will be, in a sense, ‘watered down’ this year due to the Rugby World Cup. What is your view on this and what are your thoughts on this established competition as a whole? Maybe a few big names will be missing this year, but there are still some of the top Super Rugby and even Springbok players involved in the competition. Additionally, the passion and commitment of all the Currie Cup teams remain

as high as ever. All the teams also know the rich history behind the tournament and I think everybody who follows rugby can appreciate this competition’s roots. For any team it is still a great honour to win this tournament and you can see what the Currie Cup means to the supporters. I also believe that, because there will be new players coming through this year, new heroes and future stars will be developed and that is always something the rugby public can look forward to. The support behind the Lions Rugby brand is growing and is surely something you must be quite proud to have witnessed over the past few seasons. What message would you personally like to convey to the fans? I want to thank the fans from the bottom of my heart for coming out and supporting us. I also want to thank those who stuck by us as proud supporters even during the tough years we experienced in the past. We know we represent the supporters and, believe me, we always want to make them proud and do justice to the badge and play for each other! Although we might not always succeed, we will never never give up. We as a team want to honour the Lord for our talents. Thank you for your support – may you all be blessed. 11 www.lionsrugby.co.za

Currie Cup

mainstay through the years By: Piet Ebersohn The Transvaal Rugby Football Union (TRFU), forerunner of the Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU), may have been a slow starter as far as the Currie Cup competition is concerned, but the Red and Whites and later the Golden Lions had always been a mainstay of the competition. It took Transvaal 30 years to claim the coveted golden cup, the holy grail of South African rugby, for the first time since its

inception but the team has the knack to produce historic wins. The Currie Cup used to be contested at a tournament (there were twelve such events from 1892 until 1920), but in 1922 teams went on tour for the first time to play Currie Cup matches at home and away. It was also the first time that Transvaal were crowned the Currie Cup champions. On tour Transvaal played to a 3-all draw

with Western Province in Cape Town, beat Natal 7-0, trounced Border 24-3 and beat Eastern Province by the comfortable margin of 15-0 that year. At home, Western Transvaal made them work hard for a 9-3 victory; Griquas and Free State were beaten quite comfortably 14-0 and 12-0 – and the trophy was theirs. Seventeen years later a final was staged for the first time to determine the home of the Cup. Once again Transvaal rose to the occasion and in 1939 became the first to win a Currie Cup final. The Transvaal team in the final against Western Province at Newlands was led by Fanie Louw, the experienced Springbok prop. The referee was Louw’s brother, Boy, who had still played test rugby as the other prop with Fanie against the British Lions the previous year! Transvaal won 17-6 – WP’s only defeat in a final at Newlands until the Sharks beat them 33-19 in 2013! The next time the team, now known as the Xerox Golden Lions, made history was in 1994 when they routed the Free State 56-33 at Springbok Park while the old Free State Stadium was being rebuilt. Their winning score of 56 points was a record in a Currie Cup final. The combined 89 points by the two teams was another Currie Cup record. The Lions’ seven tries set another record, and the total of ten tries was a fourth final record. Altogether, Transvaal and the Golden Lions won the cup eleven times (once shared) in 122 years of Currie Cup rugby. Not much to show, some sceptics would say, but these statistics do not tell the story of many close shaves in finals and a number of heart breaking losses in semi-finals. In 1950 the Red and White comfortably beat Western Province 22-11 at Ellis Park.

Two years later a late dropgoal by Natie Rens helped Transvaal to beat Boland 11-9 and score their first of three back-to-back Currie Cup wins. They had to wait until 1971 before they could lift the cup again, this time sharing it with Northern Transvaal after prop Sakkie Sauermann scored a controversial try in the dying moments to draw the match 14-14. The next year they beat Eastern Transvaal 25-19 in a hard fought battle in the only Currie Cup final ever at Springs. When Louis Luyt took over the presidency of the Union in 1984 he started building a formidable team that eventually dominated the Currie Cup scene during the decade of the nineties. They played in four consecutive finals from 1991 to 1994 as well as in the finals of 1996, 1998 and 1999, winning the competition on three occasions, in 1993, 1994 and 1999. The 1993 Lions win of 21-15 was achieved against Natal at Kings Park and it was Transvaal’s third successive final. The very next year came the record-breaking win against Free State and, in 1999, they outplayed Natal, once again, winning 32-9 in Durban. The Golden Lions won their last Currie Cup title to date in 2011 – a 42-16 thumping of a Springbok-laden Sharks team with many other stars by a bunch of largely unknowns – just like they did in last year’s semi-final when the score was 50-20! They lost the 2014 final against Western Province, who narrowly won 19-16 at Newlands. However, encouraging play during the Super Rugby series is once again stirring up the Golden Lions pride! Maybe it’s to be glory time again in 2015!

Young Police club establishing the current club that found a home at Marks Park in Emmarentia, previously the home of the Johannesburg Municipals Rugby Club. The new club had to prove its mettle before it would be allowed back into the premier league and started off in the Senior Grand Challenge (SGC) Competition. James du Toit, chairman of Johannesburg Bobbies, as the team is affectionately known, says the team find it very difficult to play to its true potential in the SGC.

By: Piet Ebersohn Nine years since its formation, the Johannesburg Police Rugby Club has won the first round of the Senior Grand Challenge (SGC) Competition, giving them the opportunity to establish themselves in the flagship championship of the Golden Lions Rugby Union. When they lost their home at Arthur Bloch Park the old Police club that produced players like the Springbok Jan Prinsloo, the Gazelle Tobias du Toit and Junior Springbok Gert Schutte amalgamated with the Witwatersrand Technikon club, forming the Scorpions club. With the Technikon being incorporated into the University of Johannesburg, and the club losing its senior status, it disintegrated eventually. Col Smiley Smith played the leading role in 28 www.lionsrugby.co.za

“Unfortunately we are situated in an area with three PGC clubs – University of Johannesburg, University of the Witwatersrand and Pirates – in a 5 km radius from us. It makes it difficult to draw players because everybody wants to play at top level and most players end up at the PGC clubs. “Also, many of the clubs we play against don’t have third or Under-21 teams, therefore, those players who don’t get selected for the first two teams find somewhere else to play. “It also happens that when we travel to some clubs the hosts arrive very late, don’t have enough players to field even one team, or don’t turn up at all. All these factors make it difficult to build up a club,” Du Toit says.

ub set sights high “It costs a player money to get to the field of play, then he doesn’t even get the opportunity to play because there is no team to play against. People can’t afford to waste money in the present tight economy. If it happens once, it’s perhaps understandable – but it’s not funny if it happens twice and even more often.”

they’ll have to get stronger and fitter if they want to play well week after week.

Du Toit says without a third team there is no competition for the second stringers and they slack off, leaving the first team players without competition for their positions as well. It’s a negative chain reaction.

“We are two years into a team-building process and the players are now showing their mettle. Players and coaches worked equally hard in the off-season to prepare for the next.

“We and other top clubs also find that players leaving school are not joining clubs anymore. Everybody wants to play Varsity Cup and if they do not get a contract, they quit playing altogether. “Having said this, I must give full credit to our current bunch of players for their perseverance and all the trouble and time they invest in the club. They are true Bobbies.” Du Toit says finding adequate sponsors is their main objective at present. “Playing at a higher level is more expensive and there is a vast difference between our current budget and the money needed for the PGC Competition. “Currently we have the players to compete, but we need to acquire depth. It is no small matter to play in the Pirates League.” He says the players are feeling the effect even of playing against the bottom four PGC clubs and

Du Toit says they strive to win the league in the long run and eventually play Community Cup rugby, but are under no illusion about how much work that requires.

“The latter added lots of innovation to the play. The committee is working hard behind the scenes to keep the players happy. “Our new clubhouse adds to the success. Players can now bring their families along and you have a happy environment. We’d like to involve the families as much as possible.” The rise of Johannesburg Bobbies is altogether a club effort, Du Toit says, but people like head coach Gerhard Swart deserve a special mention. “He developed greatly as a coach this year and is never too clever to learn something new. He is working hard with the players and has always got some new stuff to keep them sharp.” The chairman says the team as a whole performed exceptionally, but there are stars like Sipho Mohlhla (19 tries this season), Johan Badenhorst (14) and goalkicker Louis Snyman, the latter a club veteran; Richard Lizamore, Nico Johst, Mondré Voges, Jono Marshall, Ralph Barnard, Giel van Dijk, Gavin Brits.
