MESSAGE FROM

EMIRATES THE 2016 SUPER Rugby season has started off on a high note with all participating teams showing great ambition and skill so far in this year’s tournament. As the Title Sponsor of the Emirates Lions, we look forward to another exciting Super Rugby season. It is a great privilege for Emirates to be associated with rugby, a sport that commands such a great following across many of our markets. The excitement we saw in our first year of involvement in Super Rugby in 2015, and the growth of the tournament this year to include teams from South America and Japan, reassures us that our decision to be

part of the Super Rugby tournament is perfectly aligned to our brand promise of connecting people with their passion. As one of the Emirates Lions’ loudest and proudest fans, we look forward to hosting all the teams and their fans at our home - Emirates Airline Park and wish the Emirates Lions every success in the season ahead. Enjoy the game. Orhan Abbas Emirates Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations, Latin American, Central and Southern Africa

TRIES GIVING

POWER TO KNOWLEDGE THE 2016 VODACOM SUPER RUGBY games will be all about creating hunger for knowledge with the launch of Vodacom’s Tries for Books campaign. Vodacom will donate R7000 for every try scored by a South African team, towards setting up e-libraries and donating books to schools in communities that need it most. The on field action will translate into empowering young minds around the country giving teams an extra reason to get the ball over the chalk line. The telecommunications giant will also donate books to underprivileged schools around the country changing the game through knowledge. 85% of South Africans do not have access to a nearby library and this project aims to drive education through literacy.

The players will effectively not only contribute to the scoreboard but also empower young minds. Vodacom would like to encourage supporters to write the story with us and change people’s lives. Fans will be able to get involved by donating books at various stadiums around the country. These books will be distributed to underprivileged schools. Books have the Power to change the world. Bring your books. Follow #Tries4Books for details. More Teams. More Games. More Tries. More Books. More Knowledge. Melanie Forbes Managing Executive: CBU Gauteng Vodacom

COACHING THE REFEREES More than just a Job By Monique Naudé

“AS A COACH OF REFEREES, seeing someone start from the ground-level to end up as a newly appointed Super Rugby referee is not only humbling, but also one of the highlights of my career,” says Theuns Naudé, Referee Manager (previously Referee Coach) at the Golden Lions Rugby Union. Naudé has been involved with the refereeing side of the game for 24 years. He started his career as a club rugby referee in 1991 at the Valke Rugby union, and in 1997 he was called up to the South African Rugby panels. In 1999 Naudé moved to the Golden Lions Rugby Union, where he is still involved.

In 2004 Naudé decided to retire as a referee, but by no means did that mean he would be any less involved in the process. Starting 2005 he was appointed as a Referee Coach at national level, where he advised and mentored countless aspiring referees. Starting this year’s Super Rugby tournament, three new teams were welcomed into the competition as well as nine newly appointed referees. South Africa now proudly boast seven top referees on the panel, of which two were newcomers to the competition that started on February 26.

Craig Joubert, Jaco Peyper, Jaco van Heerden, Marius van der Westhuizen, Quintin Immelman, Rasta Rasivenghe and Stuart Berry will have their work cut out for them this season. With the new law changes that have been implemented by SANZAAR (South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and Argentina Rugby), both the existing and the new referees have a more challenging job. According to Naudé, “everyone, new and existing referees, needed to adapt to these new laws. I believe that this fact allows the new referees to feel comfortable in their new position.” Peyper,Van Heerden,Van der Westhuizen, Immelman, Rasivenghe and Berry are all referees that went through the process with Naudé. “I first noticed Jaco (van Heerden) at a rugby tournament at Tukkies (The University of Pretoria). After the tournament, I continued to work with him, and it is a delight to see him as one of the top referees in South Africa,” says Naudé. The protocol regarding the television match official (TMO) has also changed. The TMO is no longer allowed to advise a referee during the match, and may only be called upon for foul play or the act of scoring a try. This means that the TMO will not have any influence on the way a referee conducts his match. It is, in a nutshell, an added responsibility to referees.

Theuns Naudé

After more than two decades of scouting, training and mentoring some of the best referees in South Africa, there is no doubt that Naudé has an eye for refereeing talent. And, for him, it is more than just a job. There is the challenge of producing the best, and a real love for a commitment that sees him measure success and deriving pleasure from the success of his protégés.

FACELIFT FOR THE EMIRATES PARK PITCH By Annemie Bester

The pitch at Emirates Airline Park underwent a face-lift during the offseason with the top being pulled off (stripped) and summer grass seeds then reseeded. It took only 11 weeks before the magnificent field was again available for action. The pitch expert Johan Jansen van Vuuren, who knows this stadium like the back of his hand having started working on the

field in 1996, headed the operation again with the help of equipment by Pearce Penberthy of PenQuip. They were assisted by the Ellis Park Stadium (Pty) Ltd pitch staff Haswill Radebe, Jabu Mbele, Jonas Kekane and Lebo Mokone who are responsible to maintain the pitch throughout the season. This stadium is the very first sand pitch stadium in the world.

FACELIFT FOR THE EMIRATES PARK PITCH • 23 www.lionsrugby.co.za

The top was sliced off by a machine called the Koro after which another machine made holes within which the new seeds were dropped with a ‘speed seader’ that plants every single seed individually. Within two hours the complete field was planted.

AN INTERESTING FACT about the Emirates Airline Park pitch is that the Braamfontein creek originates under the pavilion on the northern side of the stadium which eventually becomes the Jukskei River.

The field then received a top dressing consisting of very special and expensive compost. This ensured that, as the seeds geminated, there was food ready and waiting.

The irrigation system in the stadium recycles all the water running down off the chairs and steps during rain. The water is then collected in a massive reservoir under the Eastern pavilion.

The field was then covered – not just as protection against the sun but against their biggest enemy, birds. After ten days the summer grass started growing and eleven weeks later the pitch was ready to be played on.

The stadium is therefore self-sufficient as far as water is concerned, and if the need arises water from the creek is used.

The sand pitch was installed in 1996 and it has a two-grass system, a mix between winter and summer grass. Most other pitches in the country have a synthetic element among the grass.

JANSEN VAN VUUREN is an absolute encyclopaedia of information on sporting fields and he consulted on most of the fields for the soccer 2010 World Cup. He currently also works on no less than 35 golf courses. He holds an M.Sc degree in Soil Science from Michigan State University in Turf and Turfgrass Management
