Remembering the Shack
When I was a kid, “The Endless Summer” movie just came out. The year was 1964 and I was nine. How cool it was for Bruce Brown and two of his surfing buddies, Robert August and Mike Hynson to travel around the world following summer and chasing the perfect wave. They traveled to beaches in Hawaii, Africa, Australia, Tahiti and many beaches that surfing was unknown to the locals. Bruce narrated the trip with funny stories and interesting tidbits. Surf-rock music played in the background. Now when I see the poster, memories of my summers on LBI as a kid, come flooding back. The Origins of Howard’s French Fried Lobster
Anyone who has spent enough time on LBI knows about Howard’s Seafood Restaurant’s famous French Fried Lobster. It is a summer staple and “must-do” for many vacationers and locals alike. But when, and how, did it come to be? Way, way back when in the early 1950’s, Long Beach Island was a much different place, at least as far as seafood restaurants go. Howard Sparks had just opened his eponymous restaurant, Howard’s Seafood, at the spot where Bert’s Luncheonette once stood. With not much more than a lunch counter and scattering of small tables, he set out to follow his dream.
were found just about anywhere a sign promised fresh seafood. He knew he needed something different, something over the top to make customers flock to Howard’s. He found his answer in French Fried Lobster. Succulent morsels of fresh lobster tail hand breaded and fried, served with plenty of lemon to squeeze and salty drawn butter to dip. Perfection! Honey Bee: Non-aggressive unless
bothered. The honey bee has a barbed stinger which pulls away from fheir stomach along with a poson sac after stinging. The honey bee will die because of this abdomen rupture. Honey bees do not just produce and make honey, but their honey comb is used to make candles.
Bumblebee: All bumblebees are covered in soft short hairs called pile that make them look fuzzy. While they are usually banded in black and yellow they can also have orange or red markings or be entirely black. most bumblebees are calm and are unlikely to attack people unless the colony is threatened.
Hornet: A type of bee that are aggressive.
Their they sting in full-flight mode, which adds a whole lot more pain to their sting.
Carpenter Bees: Can drill through
wood and nest inside the hole that they drilled. These bees are honestly some of the most amazing bees in the world due to the fact that their hole is almost always nearly perfectly the same size: a half of an inch in diameter.
Killer Bees: One of the most feared
bees. Killer bees, also known as Africanized bees are definitely different than any bee that you have ever seen. There are four life stages of this incredible creature: egg, larva, pupa and finally adult. It usually takes about twenty-one days for the regular worker bee to fully develop out of the egg stage and sixteen days for a queen to develop and finally, twenty four days for a drone Africanized bee to develop. The average life span of a drone bee is going to be five to ten weeks, while worker bees usually live up to about fifty days. Did you know: all of the worker bees are going to be female. What Makes the Dog Park so Happy? Those fabulous Dog Portraits of Barnegat Pooches. The idea for the Dog Portraits was conceived a few years ago by local resident Cricket Luker, owner of Wildflowers By the Lighthouse and Wildflowers Too! Cricket’s love of dogs (and all animals) goes back to her childhood. 12 Years ago, she began the Annual Barnegat Dog Show held on August 13 as a birthday party celebration and community fundraising event for the local Humane Society. It has become a beloved summertime tradition each year with dozens of dogs participating in the red carpet event vying for prizes in multiple categories like best costume, tricks, and best kisser.

While a customer was visiting Wildflowers they began discussing the upcoming Dog Show. The customer mentioned her son painted dog portraits. That planted a seed in Cricket’s creative mind. Later that evening as she was preparing prizes for the next day’s Dog Show, she had an idea to marry the local interest with local talent. As the idea grew from creative concept to reality others joined in to the project. All dogs would be local residents or visitors to Barnegat Light. A plan was made, a sponsor was needed, space was donated, materials were purchased, artists were hired, dogs were interviewed, owners commissioned their pet’s portraits, and portrait sittings were scheduled to take place over the course of two weeks in August of 2013. Whew! The portraits were painted on exterior plywood with exterior paint and finished with a sealer. Take your dog to visit these wonderful painting.

Painting with Wool Needle felting is like painting with wool! Since wool fibers have scales, a barbed felting needle is used to poke the fibers. The barbed needle entangles the fibers causing the fibers to interlock and create a dense material called felt. Wool scarves, sweaters and mittens can be embellished by needle felting. Or a felt purse, hat or shoes can be decorated using dyed wool. Wet felting uses hot water and soap to entangle the fibers. STARFISH Directions Step 1
Combine all the ingredients in a pot and heat on medium heat.

Continue to constantly stir the ingredients until the mixture begins to thicken. It will take several minutes to thicken.

Once the dough is cool enough to handle, you can roll it out to approximately 1/4� thickness and use cookie cutters, stamps, shape by hand.

Bake at 175 F for 45 minutes to an hour. Baking will make the starfish turn a slightly tan color.

morning just as he did that fateful day in 1991. So, when the “Egg” quickly outgrew its shell, Bill and the rest of the regulars followed Mark, Craig and crew across the street to a new location in 1993. The bigger venue afforded a bigger menu which continues to grow today.
Our Story The Chicken or the Egg first opened its doors on Memorial Day Weekend, 1991. The idea was hatched by a few hungry, adventurous young men with big dreams and empty pockets. The original “Egg” was a small but quaint little luncheonette located next-door to the Beach Haven landmark ” Bill’s Barber Shop.” And even though Bill “Scrimmer the Trimmer” has since retired, his legend lives on at The Chicken or the Egg’s current location. Bill’s original sign hangs inside the restaurant as a constant reminder of its humble beginnings and the importance of customer service. Bill still eats breakfast at the “Egg” every

When we boast that there is something for everyone, it’s not without merit. There are classic items and ones that are completely original and unique. A day at the Waterpark We packed up the grandkids and went to the waterpark. They had a blast splashing and sliding. We loved watching them. Me with my camera and Kim keeping careful eye on her grandson, we stood in the shallow water enjoying their laughter, the sun on our back and cool water on our feet. They went down the mini slides, medium slides and splashed in the knee high water. They turned valves to shoot water higher and pulled the rope to drop water on each other. What fun they had and we had fun watching. I wonder if we were the only grandmas that wanted to slide down that slide? Watching is fun but doing is better. Then we noticed the lazy river tucked away under the giant waterslide. Big clear tube rings piled high and steps leading to cool blue water. We talked the grandkids into their life vests and down the river we all went. Every once in a while a strong wave of water pushed our tube and ‘round we went. Lazy rivers are so relaxing. Floating along on gentle waves slowly spinning around the curve in warm clean water. Kids squirted us from above and water dumped on us by the bucketful. If it wasn’t for the grandkids shivering with their lips turning blue, we could have stayed in the water all day. As a matter of fact, we decided that this year we will go down the river without the grandkids! Just us. We will stay in the water until we are shivering and our lips turn blue. -Lisa Ball

E-Scow National Championship To Feature World Champion & Top U.S. Sailors Sept 10-13, Hosted by Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club
The host venue, the Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club in Beach Haven, is well known throughout the country as a great place to sail, conducting major regattas and sailing programs for youth and adults.
One of the most prestigious yacht races in the U. S. is coming to Beach Haven, NJ this September. The 4-day Regatta, the 2015 E-Scow National Championship, will determine the top E-Scow racing class skippers and crews in the country, with over 80 teams competing. The rich tradition and competitive spirit of the 28-foot E-Scow comes to New Jersey, a yacht design that is a favorite racing class by sailors and is one of the fastest mono-hull sailboats in existence.
The race includes downwind “legs” where the wind is directly behind the boats, that requires the crew (shown here) to “fly” big spinacker kite-type sails to capture as much wind as possible.
The start of each of the six E-Scow Championship races is visually very dramatic with eighty 28-foot racing sailboats fighting for position for a good start.

Treat sunburns
Keep your houseplants healthy
Epsom salt soothes sunburned skin. Its anti-inflammatory properties help in treating mild sunburn Add 1-2 tablespoons of Epsom salt irritation including itching and pain. per gallon of water and nourish Epsom salt also maintains an even your houseplants. skin tone. Combine 2 tablespoons of Epsom salt and a cup of water in a spray bottle. Shake well. Spray the combination on the affected area and leave it on for 10 minutes. Take a shower. Repeat the treatment several times a week for optimal results. You can also fill your bathtub with lukewarm water and stir in a cup of Epsom salt. Make sure the crystals dissolve completely. Add a few drops of lavender essential oil and soak in for 20 minutes.
Relieve muscle pain An Epsom salt bath contributes to a more efficient detoxification through the skin and this is a traditional soaking agent that relieves muscle pain and stiffness.
Grow your flowers, fruits and vegetables better
Soothe bug bites
If you are growing tomatoes, just sprinkle a few tablespoons of Epsom salt at the base of the plant. This will keep it healthy and maximize the yield.
Pest control Epsom salt is an excellent solution for lawn pests and natural insect control. Spraying solution on the lawn controls the insects without even damaging the grass. It is toxic-free. Dry Epsom salt deters slugs and snails.
Fertilizer Some plants require tons of food, especially those lovely roses. Put some Epsom salt in the soil around the roses during the blooming season for a more beautiful, and long-lasting flowers. Palm trees, tomatoes, and peppers love Epsom salt.
Combine 1/4 cup of Epsom salts and a cup of warm water. Let it cool in the fridge. Apply the mixture to the bite using a cotton pad to soothe pain and itching.
Remove splinters According to the Epsom Salt Council, Epsom salt increases the osmotic pressure on the skin, and this helps drawing any foreign bodies towards the surface. Add a cup of Epsom salt to your bathtub and soak the affected area.
Get rid of foot odor Soak your feet with warm water and add some Epsom salt. This will eliminate unpleasant odor, pain and heavy legs feeling. Soak the feet in for 15-20 minutes to improve blood circulation, reduce inflammation and soften your skin.

Shark teeth are embedded in the gums rather than directly affixed to the jaw, and are constantly replaced throughout life. Multiple rows of replacement teeth grow in a groove on the inside of the jaw and steadily move forward in comparison to a conveyor belt; some sharks lose 30,000 or more teeth in their lifetime. Portuguese Man o War The Portuguese man o' war is not a common jellyfish but a siphonophore, which is not actually a single multicellular organism, but a colony of specialized minute individuals called zooids.
A man-of-war sting is excruciatingly painful, but rarely deadly. But beware—even dead man-of-wars washed up on shore can deliver a sting.
Portuguese man o' war has no means of propulsion, it is moved by a combination of winds, currents, and tides.
Often the finding of a single Portuguese man o' war results in the finding of many others in the vicinity. They must be treated with caution, The discovery of a man o' war washed up on a beach may lead to the closure of the whole beach
The Cold Facts The origins of ice cream can be traced back to at least the 4th century B.C. Early references include the Roman emperor Nero (A.D. 37-68) who ordered ice to be brought from the mountains and combined with fruit toppings, and King Tang (A.D. 618-97) of Shang, China who had a method of creating ice and milk concoctions. Ice cream was likely brought from China back to Europe. Over time, recipes for ices, sherbets, and milk ices evolved and served in the fashionable Italian and French royal courts.

The first ice cream parlor in America opened in New York City in 1776. American colonists were the first to use the term "ice cream". The name came from the phrase "iced cream" that was similar to "iced tea". The name was later abbreviated to "ice cream" the name we know today.
In 1846, Nancy Johnson patented a hand-cranked freezer that established the basic method of making ice cream still used today. William Young patented the similar "Johnson Patent Ice-Cream Freezer" in 1848.

Summertime These wonderful long days with time to waste let my mind dream of the fun days to come. It is summertime and all is well. Happy kids surrounded by water, play in the hot sun. We’re all in one small place and still we are laughing. The usual hustle and bustle is in the past. Time is definitely relative. I will make this day last a very long time. It will live in my memory. Hot summer days warm my heart. Chunks of watermelon hydrate my body. Cool water refreshes my skin. Blue sky far behind trees with dark green leaves fill my eyes. The smell of chlorine reminds me of summer. Under the silent water world, I am by myself. Nothing distracts me as I gently glide through crystal clear water. My back stops aching and that old knee now bends with ease. I’ve found the fountain of youth. As I pop through the surface, sound and sight are restored. Laughing and splashing is all around me. I take in a big breath and I’m back. It is my reality, my world and it is full of love. The extra hours of sunlight allows us to relax. We have time to enjoy our family and play. Shrimp Scampi Shrimp scampi has to be one of the easiest ways to quickly prepare shrimp. Simply sautĂŠ the shrimp with garlic in butter and olive oil, splash it with some white wine, let the wine reduce while the shrimp cooks, and then toss it with fresh parsley, lemon juice and black pepper. If you are using frozen raw shrimp, defrost them quickly and safely by putting the shrimp in a large bowl of lightly salted ice water (1 1/2 teaspoons of salt for every quart of water). Cook the shrimp scampi in butter and olive oil. 1 pound large (16-20 count) raw shrimp, shelled 2 Tbsp olive oil 2-3 Tbsp butter Salt 3-4 garlic cloves, slivered, or 1 Tbsp minced garlic 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes 1/2 cup white wine 2 tablespoons finely chopped parsley Freshly ground black pepper to taste 1 Tbsp lemon juice

Look what’s coming to Long Beach Island! Brightest Star School of Performing Arts, located in Morris County, is thrilled to be introducing its Summer Musical Theatre Sleep-Away camp to the LBI community! For one week only, July 19th through 24th, Brightest Star will be teaching middle school and high school students the fundamental tenets of musical theatre and introducing them to the joys of performance. Throughout the week, the students will take daily classes in singing, acting, and dancing, rehearse for a full-length show, and indulge in the many wonderful pleasures that LBI holds. Brightest Star focuses on technique as the basis of training and then provides students with the opportunity to apply that technique in rehearsal and performance, while all the while keeping them in contact with the outside world of experiential learning. This program seeks to endow students with skills for life beyond solely a career in the performing arts. Brightest Star believe the strategies used while learning the arts can be applied to everyday life. Improvisation helps us think on our feet. Rigorous practice aids us in understanding what is necessary to achieve the highest level of any goal. Memorization massages the brain and keeps us alert. Dance works our bodies, giving us exercise, spatial awareness, and coordination. All of this is done in an environment that nourishes creativity and personal accomplishment. Through this camp, Brightest Star hopes that the natural beauty of Long Beach Island will nurture the students’ artistic souls, and that they learn to have confidence, take risks, and lead with joy in everything they do, on stage and off. The camp will conclude with a production of Once on This Island at the Beach Haven Firehouse on July 24th at 4 PM. Once on This Island is a heart-warming folktale about the power of true love to prevail in the face of prejudice and deep class divisions. The show is open to the public. Admission is $5, and tickets are available at the door. Please join them for the culmination of this unique performing arts experience! With so much to offer, Brightest Star in Beach Haven is fully enrolled! The reception has been so positive that they will be running this camp next year for at least 2 weeks, providing Beach Haven with musical theatre for many summers to come!
