Remember the beach before beach replenishment?
The 5th street pavilion in Beach Haven was way out to the water. It was so hard to picture what beach replenishment would look like. Now our beaches are huge. Climbing up and over the mountainous dunes then walking down to the beach is quite the workout. Dune grass grows as far as you can see. Simply beautiful.
jetty and we would walk to the very end of the green slime covered rocks. High tide waves would crash on jetty rocks. Back then, the lack of dunes made it possible to see the ocean from the street. Times have changed and now the ocean seems so far away.
When I was a kid, a long, long time ago, the beaches were very wide and the jetty sat on top of the beach. You would have to climb on the rocks to walk on the

I watched as Superstorm Sandy flattened the beach. I watched as the massive trucks moved tons of sand. And now, it is a new beach. A beautiful wide gorgeous beach. Lisa Ball

The Original Schooner’s Wharf Launched on Thanksgiving Day 1917 Lucy Evelyn was a lifelong dream of Captain Everett C Lindsey. The ship was named after his two daughters, Lucy and Evelyn. Fully rigged and ready to sail in January 1918, a unforeseen freeze locked her into the harbor. It was one of the most severe winters in history. With the spring thaw she sailed with a cargo of coal for New York and Santa Domingo and returned to New York loaded with molasses. The Lucy Evelyn was a wind jammer and had no auxiliary power. One time off of Cape Cod she sprang a leak and quickly filled with water. Only her cargo kept her afloat. She drifted helplessly for three days until the coast guard patrol towed her ashore for repairs. She sprung another leak in January 1948, the crew had to move sixty tons of rock ballast by hand to raise the front of the ship. She was unable to pick up cargo for months. When they got to New Bedford the seamen sued for back pay and the Lucy Evelyn was put up for auction. The ship was sold for $1500 and towed to Beach Haven where she was later turned into a gift shop.

Betty and Nat Ewer opened The Sea Chest Gift Shop on Memorial day 1937. Located on the Beach Haven Boardwalk until the hurricane of 1944 washed the shop away. The Lucy Evelyn sat aground on a sand barrier in the little egg bay for months until a violent nor’easter raged and the tide rose and kept rising. With the help of two local draggers, two Coast Guard Patrol boats and a fifty foot dragger called The Black Whale, lines were made and the pull began. She would not budge. Using and anchor and a winch and after an hour of tension she was finally free. A fourteen foot deep basin was dug and another high tide enabled the Lucy Evelyn to float into the basin. Two bulldozers eased her into her final location. Modifications were made in time to open for Memorial Day 1949 and an entrance door was cut into the starboard side. Small shops were built like the Shell Shanty fill will shells, starfish, nets and other treasures from the sea. This building still remains today. It was turned ninety degrees but still sits in the same location. The narrow boardwalk with rope railings connected the small shops. Anchors and rowboats decorated the sandy ground. There was a Christmas Shop called Christmas Cargo filled with nautical ornaments. During the winter of 1972 work was being done on the Lucy Evelyn when a kerosene heater ignited the years of pitch. Despite valiant efforts by firemen, the Lucy Evelyn was gone. All that was left were the memories when kids played on her deck and imaged they were sailing out at sea. Families shopping in her hull. Memories of drift would and long oars hanging from her beams to act as display fixtures. Mahogany ship steering wheels that were made into lighting fixtures. Hatches that were converted into sky lights to let the light into the Lucy Evelyn. It was a wonderful place to visit. Now when you visit Schooners’ Wharf, the Tivoli stands in its place to remind you of the Lucy Evelyn.

Pork Roll It’s a NJ thing. Pork Roll and cheese on a hard roll...YUM.
13
It’s what we ate on VACATION.
Especially when all the cousins spent their summers on LBI. The moms would thinly slice a huge Taylor Ham Pork Roll. A cut along the diameter kept it from curling up during shrinkage. Nice an crispy on the outside and topped with melted American cheese between a nice fresh kaiser roll.

The Rain Date The vacation getaway is booked on Long Beach Island, NJ. Your bags are packed and the GPS is searching for lovable LBI! Oh oh, you have rain in the forecast. Make the best of it. Take advantage of its beauty. Be prepared.
Pack a few must haves: Raincoat or poncho Knee high boots Rain hat Kayak :) Camera
LBI can be an adventure in a storm. Please not if you hear thunder you can be struck by lightning, so get back indoors until it passes. Time to get the rain gear on. Make sure you have some tall waterproof boots! I love storms on LBI. If you get a rainy day get your camera and get some great shots of crazy clouds. I have seen some fantastic rolling cloud banks recently. Sometimes you will see wonderful colors drip down into the ocean. The black clouds that roll in from Manahawkin can be very dramatic at times. The next place to get some cool shots is watching for the oceans rage. This can be in many LivingLBI.com
16
ways. Most of the time the ocean is coming straight in. During storms
it seems to go sideways. Don’t go in over ankle deep! I’ve been taken out at the knees thinking it was fine! The white water is beautiful. The sea spray off a curling wave is what postcards are made of! Sometimes we have large wave pools or wave pools with rapids that lead back into the ocean. These are fun with a boogie board. The ocean provides tons of fun even in off weather days. If you are first out, you may find some shells to place on your mantle. Moon shells, conch shells and other flotsam and jetsam are great souvenirs from LBI. Next, let's head to the bay side. WOW! WAVES in the bay - How Cool Is That? Sometimes you will see the ducks taking in the new surf advantage. The seagulls may be in a flutter above heading for cover. The salt air and sea is definitely in your face! Many of the street you will have the bay slapping up and over the bulkheads. It is a great shot for the album. Be careful you will get wet! So now that it has rained for awhile it is time to explore LBIVenice and take some shots of watered-down streets. To be safe do not drive through deep waters. Some spots will be marked with orange cans but sometimes the water adds up quickly, turn back if you are not sure how deep the water is! If you drive the back-road, Beach Ave. you are able to get around a portion of the island safely. To get some “river shots of the BLVD. drive up the block to the edge of the water and snap away. We have seen some pretty unusual sights from time to time. You may see some kayakers on the Blvd., a flock of ducks tooling around a parking lot pond, bikers rooster tailing a fountain of spray, and maybe find a treasure that has taken afloat and sailed away on its own. When the storms come so do the waves, and so do the shells and sea glass. Bring a bucket! Now is the time to reap the rewards of a great rain storm of LBI!

Q: Does acupuncture hurt? How long does it take?
Acupucture There are many wellness establishments on LBI that provide alternative medicine therapies such as acupuncture. One of these is the LBI Acupuncture and Healing Center located in Ship Bottom. We asked Rein Pulz, MSOM, L.Ac, owner of this company to talk to us about acupuncture treatment.
Q: What is acupuncture? Rein: Acupuncture is a several thousand year old practice of medicine – it is looked at as coming from China because that is where most of the literature for it is and the tradition of it going back thousands of years. It is the insertion of small stainless steel or gold and silver pins in certain parts of the body to stimulate QI the circulation of QI (pronounced “chee”) or (vital) energy (or life force) of the body, break any staganation, and harmonize the yin and yang of the body to create the body’s way of being the most healthy so it can fight off illness or discomfort or a disorder of the body.
Q: What did you have to do to be certified to practice acupuncture? Rein: In New Jersey you need a Bachelors degree and a Masters in Acupuncture. For the school I attended it was about 4 years of continuous year-round education - 11 semesters of classes - and a large amount of clinical hours. I spent part of my clinical hours in Chinatown in New York City working at the oldest pharmacy there where I had the opportunity to see a vast array of people and ailments for study.
Q: Did you also study Traditional Chinese Medicine? Rein: Chinese medicine theory is the whole basis of acupuncture and Chinese herbs – so in order to learn acupuncture so you really need to understand the concepts of Chinese medical theory based on Taoist practices of thousands of years ago.
LivingLBI.com
Rein: It is very hard to get people in the first time – once they come in they say oh that’s it? We have a needle phobia – you know the hypodermic needles you see in hospitals are thick – acupuncture needles are so thin you can fit about 20-25 needles in the hole of a hypodermic so in general they don’t hurt – sometimes there is a little discomfort.
Q. What is a typical first treatment like? Rein: For a typical first treatment the patient will come in and we will discuss what is going on with them – we will be looking at the tongue and feeling the pulse. These are traditional Chinese medical ways of assessing what’s going on in the body – if there is an excess or deficiency or imbalance somewhere it will show on markings on the tongue or weakness of pulse etc. those are our diagnostic methods. Then they will go on the Bemer mat for a few minutes. The mat provides Physical Vascular Therapy that improves microcirculation and promotes the blood flow in the smallest blood vessels. Then we’ll move on to the acupuncture which starts off with a little massage to feel things out and look for tightness in the body. We then do a few acupuncture points and leave the patient resting for 10 – 30 minutes before removing the needles. We then may do a little cupping and a little more tuina (pronounced twee-na) medical massage and use some of the herbal salves or liniments to make it a full body experience. The treatment is catered to each individual so we take it each person at a time. For the treatment itself, depending on what part of the body we’re working on, if we’re focusing on neck pain or back pain usually we’ll have them go face down and other times we’ll have them go face up – also depends on the comfort of the patient. If you have never experienced this form of ancient healing this might be the time to check it out. To see what an acupuncture treatment looks like and hear more about this ancient healing art watch the video with Rein Pulz found here. -Pat Trotter

Island Wellness Center owned by Malia Murphy, provides massage therapy in various forms to a diverse clientele. Malia likes to say that it is like a mini-vacation or vacation within a vacation. We spoke to her this spring about massage therapy.

Licensed massage therapists, like Malia and her therapist colleagues, have undergone over 500 hours of training and studying to be certified to practice. There are many types of massage: Swedish, Cranial-Facial, Myofascial which incorporates elements of physical therapy, Thai Massage, Lomi-Lomi Hawaiian massage, and others. Massage therapists decide which forms of massage they wish to study and become specialized in several areas. Each type of massage serves a purpose and is tailored to the needs of the client. Massage is good for men and women all ages and body types as it is a great stress reliever and can also provide physical relief from aches and pains. Experiencing a massage is especially good for todays stressed out teenagers, especially those involved in sports. On LBI, surfers and other outdoor recreation enthusiasts benefit from working with a massage therapist. Some people use their hour with a massage therapist as a way to block out the world and relax with no distractions. Massage therapy has also proven beneficial for pregnant women. What should you expect? When you arrive for your massage the therapist will gather some information about you and talk with you about what you would like to get out of the experience. You will then go into one of the massage rooms and lay down on the massage table. There is usually low lighting, relaxing music and aromatherapy in the massage room and the table might also be heated. You will be fully covered and can choose to remove whatever items of clothing you feel comfortable taking off before you get onto the table and under the covers. If a person is not comfortable taking off their clothes most massage therapists will give them the massage with their clothes on. Throughout the massage your therapist will ask you about your comfort level and any areas that seem more sensitive then others.

After your massage you will be given some time to process your experience and get dressed before leaving the massage room. Frequent visits to a massage therapist provide the therapist time to better understand your body’s needs and target issues that need more attention. So the next time you are on LBI take a hour out of your busy day and enjoy a relaxing and therapeutic massage. You’ll be glad you did! To hear more about massage therapy watch the video with Malia Murphy here. -Pat Trotter

The Barnegat LightShip
The first lighthouse was built in 1835. A small lighthouse at forty-foot tall was non-flashing and inadequate for the rough inlet. Strong currents caused erosion and in 1857 the lighthouse fell into the sea. A temporary light was used until the new lighthouse was built in 1928. The new lighthouse (current) is 172 feet tall and features a rotating Fresnel lens. The lighthouse was in use until 1927 when the lightship was put into place. The lightship not only had a blinking light but a foghorn. Since the lighthouse was no longer needed, the light was replace by a weak gas light until 1944 when it was no longer needed. The Barnegat Lightship was built in 1904 by the New York Shipbuilding Company in Camden. The vessel served from 1904 to 1924 as the lightship for Five Fathom Bank, which is located 15 miles from the Cape May Lighthouse. The vessel was then used as a relief for the next two years.
Lightship Museums In Our Area AMBROSE, South Street Seaport Museum, NYC. Open to the public.
In 1927 the vessel was assigned to the Barnegat Lighthouse station. In 1942 the vessel was withdrawn from the Barnegat station to serve as an Examination vessel at Edgemoor, Delaware. The Barnegat would inspect all vessels entering the Delaware River until 1945. The vessel returned to the Barnegat station, where it served until it was decommissioned on 3 March 1967. The Barnegat was then donated to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in Saint Michaels, Maryland. The museum was unable to keep up with the maintenance of the vessel and sold the vessel to the Heritage Ship Guild in 1970 to be displayed at Penn’s Landing. The Barnegat is now docked at Pyne Poynt Marina in Camden awaiting maintenance and repair work.

A Day By The Bay My wandering mind, what will I find? Some beautiful sight of birds taking flight?
A quiet splash sound of a fish flopping ‘round? Perhaps from above gull sounds that I love?

It’s more than just pine trees!
Article and photographs by Pat Trotter www.twogiants.com
No streams flow into or through the pine barrens from outside the region. Within the Pine Barrens you will find an abundance of wildlife, migrating birds, highbush blueberries, inkberry, wintergreen, turkey beard, and other types of plant life. The dominant tree is the pitch pine, Pinus rigida. In no other region in North America does the pitch pine cover such an extended area of country as the dominant tree. The Atlantic White Cedar also grows in this area with one of the best examples found in nearby Wells Mills County Park, some of which are over 100 years old. The creeks and rivers, as well as the bogs and swamps, contain tannins from the cedar and make the waters appear dark, reddish-brown, tea-colored.
Driving to Long Beach Island
most of us go through some part of the New Jersey Pine Barrens. It’s easy not to give them a second thought – after all, they’re just a bunch of pine trees, right? Not so! The Pine Barrens are a unique and diverse area and constitute the most extensive wilderness tract along the middle-Atlantic seaboard. Its borders lie only 25 miles from Philadelphia and 35 miles from New York City. It is generally believed that present flora and fauna developed only after the retreat of the Wisconsin Ice – within the past 12,000-10,000 years. Most of the Pine Barrens is located on upland sands and the 2nd highest elevations of the Pine Barrens are found in what is called the Forked River Mountains which are only 171 and 182 feet high. A great view of this area can be found at Jakes Branch County Park. What you don’t see driving by are the 200,000 acres of bog and swamp lands within the Pine Barrens. Webs Mill Bog is near LBI and has a manmade walkway for visitors to experience the bog up close. All Pine Barrens streams arise within the pine barrens area and originate as ground water discharge from slowly moving surface waters of the Cohansey aquifer. An example is the Toms River.

New deli & grill has opened in Ship Bottom. Between to Hartland Golf and Mary Allen Realty is now a brand new deli. Stop in for breakfast and pack your cooler with sandwiches and cold cuts then head for the beach. Stop in and meet the new owners!
This rich, bio-diverse area is critical to the health of Barnegat Bay as it is part of the watershed which feeds into the bay. The aquifer which exists beneath the Pine Barrens, provides the water utilized by thousands of households in Ocean County – thus the health of the forest is extremely important to LBI as well. Next time you find yourself driving through this magnificent area you might want to take a minute to stop at one of the parks located within the Pine Barrens and experience the magic of one of the most bio-diverse spots on earth.

How to be a friend to the shore
1 2 3
Tips from the Clean Ocean Action.
Leave only footprints in the sand. Use the garbage cans provided or carry out what you bring to the beach.
Bring a bucket to the beach. When you are through building sand castles at the end of the day use the bucket to collect litter or trash to recycle. The beach is not an ashtray! Most beaches now are smoking free but in the event you are on a beach that allows smoking be sure to use an ashtray, bucket or even your pocket to take the cigarette filters off the beach. These are not bio-degradable and can be lethal when eaten by birds and fish that mistake them for food.
4
Scoop the poop! Bring a poop bag with you when you walk your dog and clean up after your pet. (BTW It’s the law) Never leave your bag behind, always properly dispose of your pet’s waste. ( Dog waste contains many types of bacteria, parasites, and nutrients that degrade water quality and adversely impact human health. By cleaning up after your pet you can help keep harmful bacteria out of our waterways.)

Watercrafts should not be operated in shallow areas. Operate in deeper water where you are less likely to disturb habitat. Stay off dunes. Dunes and grasses protect inland areas from wind and wave action and help preserve the shore. They provide habitat for birds and animals.

Getting older is an uphill swim! In my younger years I swam in the ocean, dove through the waves and rode them in on a buggy board. Now I rarely swim. The waves are just to powerful for me and I am afraid.
Uphill
Am I too weak to swim? Young kids swim in that big scary ocean and I’m stronger and weight a lot more than them. As I sit on the beach I think about the reasons for not going into the ocean. My fear goes from drowning to “I’m just too tired.” Then it hits me, I’m afraid of making a fool out of myself. What is I get knocked over by a wave. No big deal if you are young...but a grandma getting knocked over? I’d be mortified.

Bowl of Berries
Meet our new member of the family! Half Shih Tzu, Quarter Poodle and Quarter Yorkie.
My eyes light up for this bowl of berries. The bright red berries and sweet whipped cream tastes of summer. But it is the bowl that warms my heart. This vintage bowl has been around since the late ‘30s. Mothers have been serving berries in it for over eighty years. How many families shared memories from this piece of history?
My little doggy dolly! His name is Gizmo.

I’d love to ride that boogie board again. But should a grandma be riding a boogie board? I try not to care what people think but still the thought of all those judgmental eyes on me terrify and keep me safe and secure in my beach chair far from the shoreline.
The bowl was made by the Imperial glass company. This line was called Candlewick! In the ‘40s, the company started advertising this line in magazines with photos of moms serving pudding in the famous Candlewick bowls! Lisa
