Remembering The Movie

Remembering the Shack

When I was a kid, “The Endless Summer” movie just came out. The year was 1964 and I was nine. How cool it was for Bruce Brown and two of his surfing buddies, Robert August and Mike Hynson to travel around the world following summer and chasing the perfect wave. They traveled to beaches in Hawaii, Africa, Australia, Tahiti and many beaches that surfing was unknown to the locals. Bruce narrated the trip with funny stories and interesting tidbits. Surf-rock music played in the background. Now when I see the poster, memories of my summers on LBI as a kid, come flooding back. I need the towel to wrap around me while I play the movie again. -Lisa LivingLBI.com

The Origins of Howard’s French Fried Lobster

Anyone who has spent enough time on LBI knows about Howard’s Seafood Restaurant’s famous French Fried Lobster. It is a summer staple and “must-do” for many vacationers and locals alike. But when, and how, did it come to be? Way, way back when in the early 1950’s, Long Beach Island was a much different place, at least as far as seafood restaurants go. Howard Sparks had just opened his eponymous restaurant, Howard’s Seafood, at the spot where Bert’s Luncheonette once stood. With not much more than a lunch counter and scattering of small tables, he set out to follow his dream.

were found just about anywhere a sign promised fresh seafood. He knew he needed something different, something over the top to make customers flock to Howard’s. He found his answer in French Fried Lobster. Succulent morsels of fresh lobster tail hand breaded and fried, served with plenty of lemon to squeeze and salty drawn butter to dip. Perfection! And the rest is history.

But what would set him apart from the scattering of other small seafood shacks that dotted the landscape back then? Most offerings were quite similar; platters of fresh seafood fried golden brown or broiled to juicy perfection LivingLBI.com

Sand Dollar (Wikipedia Definition)

Sand dollars, like all members of the order Clypeasteroida, possess a rigid skeleton known as a test. The test consists of calcium carbonate plates arranged in a fivefold radial pattern. In living individuals the test is covered by a skin of velvettextured spines; these spines are in turn covered with very small hairs (cilia). Coordinated movements of the spines enable sand dollars to move across the seabed. The velvety spines of live sand dollars appear in a variety of colors— green, blue, violet, or purple—depending on the species. Individuals which are very recently dead or dying (moribund) are sometimes found on beaches with much of the external morphology still intact. Dead individuals are commonly found with their empty test devoid of all surface material and bleached white by sunlight. LivingLBI.com

A moment of geometric perfection as the Mako flies through the air. This is the second image from the right in the sequence.

On June 23, 2013, Tom Lynch captured an image sequence of a jumping mako shark, that quickly became one of the most famous sport fishing shots ever taken. The image was shot off the coast of New Jersey.

species do jump, but the mako is easily the most prolific jumper in the group.

Shortfin Mako sharks are extraordinary predators. They can grow to over fifteen feet long, and weigh over a ton. They can swim at speeds approaching 50 MPH, and can rocket out of the water like a missile. Makos have arguably the most impressive set of jaws of any shark. Their multiple rows of white, razor sharp, pointy teeth jut outward from their jaw in a most menacing fashion. Speed, strength and jumping ability have made the mako the most prized shark in the sport fishing world. The current all-tackle world record mako weighed 1,221 pounds, and was caught off Chatham, Ma in 2001. Makos tend to go rather ballistic when they are hooked. They make strong runs, and can leap many times. It is not uncommon for a mako to jump right into a boat. When an angry, or “green” mako lands in the back of a boat, it is an extremely dangerous situation for both man and boat. If a mako lands on, tail whips, or bites someone, the resulting injuries can be life threatening. Makos are considered the best jumpers in the shark kingdom. Great white, thresher, blacktip and several other

A juvenile Mako showing off his razor sharp teeth. Makos do not always jump when hooked. Lynch caught his personal best mako, a 407 pounder, in the early nineties, and the fish never jumped. A 407 is a respectable fish, but Tom wishes the shark had jumped, because he feels that the mako vs angler battle should feature a dramatic jump or two. Tom says “jumping is the signature element of a mako fight.”

The crew of the Debra Ann wrangling a Blue Shark before the Mako was hooked.

In June 2014, Tom was invited to shoot aboard the Debra Ann, a 30 foot Grady White, sailing out of Brielle, NJ. The boat is captained by John Breece, a highly regarded mako shark fisherman, and winner of several tournaments. Capt. Breece, and his experienced sharking crew, consisting of “Ponytail” Mike Malek, a co-owner of Grumpys Tackle in Seaside Park, and the Budish brothers, John & Jamie, who grew up fishing on the Jersey Shore set out at 6am in search of makos. After a several hour run to Capt. Breece’s favorite mako grounds, the crew got to work chumming the water with ground up fish and fish oils. This steady stream of chum forms a “slick”, often miles long. The crew then set out bluefish baits at various depths. The plan is for a mako to find the slick, and follow it right up to the baits. Shortly after 8AM, line began peeling off one of the reels as the shark tried to swim away with the bait. Jamie Budish put on his harness and began fighting the shark. The crew was excited. But soon, the excitement diminished as they realized the shark was not a mako. It was a large blue shark. Blue sharks are not coveted as game fish. They can grow to 12 feet long, but they do not fight in the maniacal manner of a mako. Jamie reeled in the shark. John and Ponytail Mike wrangled the shark and cut it free.

LivingLBI Magazine • May 2015

The crew had several more battles with blue sharks that morning. At about 10AM, another shark hit. Tom was in the cabin. He grabbed his camera and headed to the back of the boat. As he stepped into the stern area, the shark made a quick run, jumped, out off the front starboard side of the Debra Ann. It was a mako! The shark was 8-9 feet long and was a 300+ pounds. The mako made another strong run. Jamie and Capt. John kept Tom apprised to the location “70 - 80 - 90 yards at 10 o’clock” Jamie said… Then, with line peeling across the ocean surface, the whole crew began yelling “he’s coming up… he’s coming up”. Sure enough, the mako flew out of the water and ascended to at least eight or nine feet high. Tom locked the fish, focused and clicked off a rapid burst of images. “The most amazing memory I have of that mako, is the point where it was pointing perfectly vertical. It looked like a dart pointing straight down” Tom said, “you can see it in the second shark image from the right in the final print”. . The mako crashed back into the sea and continued to battle the angler. The shark made another run and suddenly broke off. The vibe on the boat quickly morphed from excitement to bummed out. The sharks teeth had worn through the heavy leader. If you look at the picture, you can see where

the leader was in the mako’s mouth, rubbing against razor shark teeth. Shooting jumping sharks is a difficult thing to do. Essentially, the photographer has a mere split second to locate the jumping fish, focus & compose the shot, and then click away. Communication with the angler and crew is critical, as the ocean is a big place to point a lens at. The Debra Ann crew caught three other makos and over 40 blue sharks during the two days Tom fished with them. None of the other makos jumped.

An angry Mako thrashes at the side of the Debra Ann as it is released.

After returning to port, Tom worked with Alan Teitel, an Emmy Award winning cameraman and post production wizard from New York, to create the multi-image mako jump sequence, called “MAKO”. Alan brought Tom’s vision to reality by layering and blending eight separate pictures of the airborne shark, into a single image.

About Tom Lynch Tom is a staff photographer for On The Water magazine. His photo credits include: the Daily News (NY). Sport Fishing Magazine, Asbury Park Press, On The Water, Fly Fisherman, The Fisherman Magazine, Big Game Fishing Journal, American Angler, Living LBI, Surfers Journal and a host of other publications. morning just as he did that fateful day in 1991. So, when the “Egg” quickly outgrew its shell, Bill and the rest of the regulars followed Mark, Craig and crew across the street to a new location in 1993. The bigger venue afforded a bigger menu which continues to grow today.

Our Story The Chicken or the Egg first opened its doors on Memorial Day Weekend, 1991. The idea was hatched by a few hungry, adventurous young men with big dreams and empty pockets. The original “Egg” was a small but quaint little luncheonette located next-door to the Beach Haven landmark ” Bill’s Barber Shop.” And even though Bill “Scrimmer the Trimmer” has since retired, his legend lives on at The Chicken or the Egg’s current location. Bill’s original sign hangs inside the restaurant as a constant reminder of its humble beginnings and the importance of customer service. Bill still eats breakfast at the “Egg” every

When we boast that there is something for everyone, it’s not without merit. There are classic items and ones that are completely original and unique. And then there are the wings… A lot of places talk a good buffalo wing, but the “Chegg” as it is now commonly known, truly delivers. The wings are big, juicy and available in 16 sauces, both Original Breaded, or Naked. The Chicken or the Egg has become know locally and Nationally for these big beauties. And best of all, the whole menu (breakfast too) is available 24 hours a day (in season). But for us, it’s not just about the food. It’s about family. It’s about camaraderie. It’ s about good times. So come io in and join the family. Join the fun. You’ll be happy you did. Oh, and sorry about the lines. People dig us. But it’ s worth the wait.

E-Scow National Championship To Feature World Champion & Top U.S. Sailors Sept 10-13, Hosted by Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club

The host venue, the Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club in Beach Haven, is well known throughout the country as a great place to sail, conducting major regattas and sailing programs for youth and adults.

One of the most prestigious yacht races in the U. S. is coming to Beach Haven, NJ this September. The 4-day Regatta, the 2015 E-Scow National Championship, will determine the top E-Scow racing class skippers and crews in the country, with over 80 teams competing. The rich tradition and competitive spirit of the 28-foot E-Scow comes to New Jersey, a yacht design that is a favorite racing class by sailors and is one of the fastest mono-hull sailboats in existence.

The race includes downwind “legs” where the wind is directly behind the boats, that requires the crew (shown here) to “fly” big spinacker kite-type sails to capture as much wind as possible.

The start of each of the six E-Scow Championship races is visually very dramatic with eighty 28-foot racing sailboats fighting for position for a good start.

Several E-Scows are shown here "beating" to windward, tacking back and forth with two working sails of a foresail jib and main sail, trimmed just right for maximum speed up wind.

STRING ART

String art uses colored string, wool or wire to create geometric patterns. The ‘string’ is normally held between nails hammered into a base board. Multiple straight lines of string can form shapes ranging from simple curves to more complex designs resembling flowers, sailing boats, etc. French mathematician and physicist, Paul de Castejau (born 1930) created an algorithm for subdividing a curve into two curve segments at an arbitrary parametric location. Another French mathematician and engineer, Pierre Bézier, developed a curve formula inspired by de Castejau’s algorithm. He was working for an automobile company where he needed an accurate way to describe a curve for design and manufacture. Bézier’s curve could describe any second degree type of curve with just four points and it became known by the name of its inventor. Closed Tuesdays after Labor Day Open Thursday thru Sunday after Chowderfest The Bézier curve was publicized in 1962 and is said to have inspierd a number of artists even though it was intended as a serious mathematical tool. USA artist, John Eichinger, created geometric string designs. He called them “string mandalas” after the Hindu word ‘mandala’, which means “circle within a circle.” His designs were first marketed in the late 1960s by the Open Door Enterprises, who were a leading distributor of hobby craft kits. A string art book called Symmography, by Lois Kreischer, was published in 1971.
