Farm Fresh Recipe Farmers’ Day is a celebration and a way to thank our local producers for all that they do in the community. If I were to ask anyone on the street why they should be thankful for a farmer, almost all would say because they provide our food. Since we are in prime-time harvesting mode for produce, I thought some delicious recipes using local ingredients would make the best article in celebration of Farmers’ Day. You can use the fresh, in-season, ripe and juicy tomatoes to make a tasty snack or a light lunch. This recipe is provided by Food.com.

Tomato and Cheese Quesadilla Ingredients:
- 2 corn tortillas or 2 flour tortillas - ¼ cup shredded cheese - 1 sliced tomato Directions: 1. Place one tortilla on a plate. 2. Spread the sliced tomato over the tortilla and then the shredded cheese. I usually leave 1 inch around the edges of the tortilla free as it tends to spread when being cooked and cut. 3. Top with the remaining tortilla. 4. Place onto a lightly cooking oil sprayed frypan or sandwich toaster. If using the frypan, you will need to flip over the quesadilla after a couple of minutes. 5. Once the filling has warmed and the tortillas lightly toasted-it’s done. 6. Wait a minute and then, carefully slice through and enjoy.

Rowan County Agriculture by Morgan Watts, Livestock & Field Crops Agent Rowan County is made up of several types of farms, creating a lot of diversity among the county; we have beef, dairy, horse, small ruminant, poultry, crop, produce, and flower farms. Some of these farms are large, while others are only a few acres. According to the 2012 Census of Agriculture, we have about 1,000 farms in Rowan County and the average farm size is 120 acres. The stats also show that about 60 percent of products sold are crops, and 40 percent are from livestock. Those combined equal about $84,000,000 in products sold. In 2012, Rowan County ranked 4th

in the state for forage land used with hay and haylage grass silage and green chop. According to the 2014 Ag Stats, Rowan ranks 4th in the state for wheat cash farm receipts and we are also 9th in the state for dairy production. The cash receipts from 2016 were $33,204 for livestock and $36,676 for crops. $16,993 of the livestock receipts came from broiler (chickens) production. In 2017, we were ranked 9th in the state for the number of beef cows on farms. We also ranked 9th for milk cows. The average age for farmers in Rowan County is 59, and there are significantly more male farmers (888) than female farmers (123). The age of farmers is becoming a growing concern. In a few years, these farmers will want to retire but having people wanting or being able to replace them is getting harder and harder. More families today are removed from the family farm. Another concern is the lack of new farms developing in the county or even in the state. The cost to buy land and start up a farm is too expensive for most individuals. As you can see by the statistics, part of Rowan County is still very much a farming community. We need the farms we have plus more people willing to start farms in Rowan County. ALL TYPES of agriculture and farming is needed in our county to feed the growing population. I would also like to invite all of you to attend Farmer’s Day in China Grove on July 21st. Come out and meet some of your local farmers and show them support. If you have any questions or would like to know more about farming and agriculture in Rowan County, please call the Rowan County Center at 704-216-8970.
