Newsletter: Issue 1 – March 2017 Results of the ‘Our Future – The Wrexham We Want ‘consultation The aim of the consultation was to gather information about the things that matter to local young people aged 11 – 25 in Wrexham. There were 340 responses with 8 Recommendations: 1. That the town centre is improved. 2. Young people should be taught more about financial matters. 3. Increased job opportunities and promotion of these opportunities. 4. Better security and a reduction in anti-social behaviour at Wrexham bus station. 5. More facilities and events within communities. 6. More education in schools about the UNCRC – Children’s Rights. 7. More opportunities for young people to participate in decision making. 8. Increased attention and resources given to improving the emotional health and well-being of young people. These findings will be fed into the ‘The Wrexham We Want’ consultation which in turn will support the Wrexham’s Well Being plan 2018. If you would like any further information please contact us.

Thank you to everyone who supported this consultation

Berwyn Prison – Feb 17 The Senedd yr Ifanc took part in helping to name Berwyn Prison, because of this they were invited into the prison for a tour inside. The young people said they found this really interesting, they learnt what it would be like to live inside and how the men would have the opportunity to be rehabilitated while serving their sentence.

Uk Youth Parliament – Yasmin My experience as Member of Youth Parliament (MYP) My Name is Yasmin Sides. I am currently the active member of the Youth Parliament for the Wrexham area. Mid November of last year I was given the chance to attend the annual debate in the House of Commons. We debated the five most important issues voted by 11-18 year olds from around the UK which where: Votes at 16, Tackling Racism and Religious Discrimination, Stop cuts that affect the NHS, a Curriculum to prepare us for life and Transport. The UK wide results – Votes at 16 came out top of the debate. MYPs across the UK work to give young people a voice by working with their MPs, decision makers, counsellors and local youth groups on the issues that the young people have voted for. Having the opportunity to sit in the House of Commons as a MYP, surrounded by so many driven and passionate young people was such an incredible, eye opening experience. I look forward to the rest of my term as an MYP and the challenges that the role brings.
