Basic Guide to understanding the parts of your wedding invitation

Optional - Encases your wedding invitation and additional inserts. The names of the invited guest(s) are handwritten here.

Invitation

Inner Envelope

Sets the tone for your event, informing your guests on the who, the what, the where, and the when. It also depicts the level of formality.

Tissue Overlay

Outer Envelope

Holds the inner envelope, your invitation, and inserts. This is where the mailing address of your guest (s) should be written.

Was commonly used by printers to place over an invitation once it was printed to prevent smearing. With today’s method of printing it not necessary to use them. However, it’s a personal choice.

Reception card These important cards provide additional information such as where the celebration continues if hosted at a different location and by what date your invited guest(s) should respond in order to reserve their seating.

Rsvp card and envelope Accommodation and directional/map cards can be included as well.

dos & don’ts

Mail your invitations 6 to 8 weeks before your wedding, with a response time from your guests of 2 to 3 weeks . This is important to finalize things with your caterer, arrange seating, etc.

Never include registry cards or information with your invitations. Never print on the invitation or on a separate card asking for monetary Gifts.
