In this edition we showcase an incredible ten projects from our extensive client portfolio, including two revolutionary Spa Rooms: ‘The Cube’ on page 34 and ‘Time to Relax’ on page 42 - both projects feature luxurious details that are akin to a top end spa.
Following an extensive overhaul of our design studio we rebranded with a new name, Kuche & Bagno Kitchens Bathrooms & Interiors. We are delighted to announce that we won the coveted D Awards Showspace of the Year 2018 - see page 12 for the lowdown and visit www.kucheandbagno.co.uk to check out our new website. We look into the future on page 42: homes will have ensuite bathrooms to all bedrooms, leaving the ‘family bathroom’ a dedicated ‘Home Spa’ instead. This will enable the whole household to experience unplugging from the outside world, relaxing and enjoying various spa treatments in the comfort of their own home - which is essential not only for the body but the mind alike.

"Creating the right Show Space is all about balance, it's about showing plenty of product but not too much and its about making what you offer look aspirational whilst at the same time attainable. Achieving all of that within what is often a limited space can be a really tough task.
Each finalist is a very different project in its own right so choosing an outright winner was a particularly tough task. But a combination of superb functionality, seamless style won through for a project that made a complex design proposition look very simple."

Notes from the designer Functionality in this space was key, so a stacked washing machine and tumble dryer solution means that it not only makes the appliances easier to use but it is also a great way of utilising space. We were worried that as the kitchen would be losing its window with the new extension, a glazed pocket door between the kitchen and laundry room was used so that it would bring some borrowed light in. n For more information contact: kucheandbagno.co.uk | 01788 866930

For us discovering Buster + Punch two years ago was a revelation, a breath of fresh air at a time when handles in contemporary kitchen design had been forgotten about. At the time a handless or J profile door featured prominently in an array of homes throughout the UK, whether it be a one-bedroom apartment or a sprawling family abode. The only difference was the price and of course attention to detail of the door, either foil wrapped or painstakingly lacquered to achieve a pristine finish, akin to a paint job on a Bentley.

“Kuche & Bagno were helpful throughout the process including helping to specify good quality products which last longer through to helping how to install - we wouldn’t have got anywhere without their help! “The design is so unique and individual to me. Even down to the different colour grouts and the attention to detail of the grout width really makes a big difference. “It’s very satisfying undertaking a new project yourself being able to oversee and make sure all the attention to detail that had been designed into the scheme was carried out correctly.”

Having installed a beautiful boutique family bathroom five years ago for our clients including a large walkin shower with luxurious Bisazza mosaics, Kuche & Bagno were commissioned once again to transform their master en-suite into a soothing space with a spa feel.
T
here was a desperate need to update the en-suite bathroom with the original suite installed some eighteen years old in this
coach house style property. The existing en-suite had a real wooden plank floor and half height timber cladding to the walls. However the client didn’t use the bath for some years as it wasn’t appealing to use, especially after the new boutique family bathroom was completed and the whole suite was difficult to clean with the amount of natural wood present, especially the floor. It was imperative that the new space would be easy to clean and easy to access. Storage was central to the design and the newly formed stud wall was used to house the wall hung WC frame, the box niches to soften the wall and provide storage, as well as the bespoke super-sized mirror cabinets manufactured by Springburn Joinery. The lighting scheme was essential and it was also important to get the right colour temperature. The beautiful bathroom chandelier central light fitting gave a softness instead of the norm with stark spotlights, while the special feature low level lighting brings a welcome night light along with lights under the basin for midnight trips to the bathroom. n
Notes from the designer I believe that having a tranquil space in the home where you can completely unplug from social media and media alike is essential for our well-being. A day bed is a great thing where you can relax during the day or evening reading a book which also doubles as a perfect seat to dress or undress and apply creams. “It’s then a wonderful treat to use as a whirlpool/spa – it’s

Dr Vanessa Brady OBE, International multi-award winning Interior Designer There is no such thing as free design, there are offers when you buy the providers items - but if they only offer their products the design is not the best product for you, it is the best product they sell for you.
"It is such an expensive error when you get it wrong. Designers do it every day, home owners do it once"
There is a lot of opinion but that is not advice and it generally is not carefully measured advice or compliant. A designer must have knowledge of many things to give advice. An experienced and recognised designer adds value to a space not necessarily by spending more money but by creating an environment that is comfortable to be in for the purpose it is to be used for; kitchen, bathroom, bedroom etc. Choosing the correct scale (size) of items as well as colour and texture are just the beginning. The real value of a designer comes from the success the user has when its in use. Good design will add value and improve the way you move around in the space. The colours and lighting set the mood; relax, energise, excite, shock ..all of these emotions add to the design but the layout must be compliant. Having invested in the property, before you purchase the materials why would you proceed with a purchase before it is checked by an expert? It is such an expensive error when you get it wrong. Designers do it every day, home owners do it once."
Colin Wong, Multi-award winning Kitchen Designer Today's kitchen is not just a place to cook anymore! We also eat, work and generally hangout in the modern-day kitchen so to place the power of how this space is designed into a 'salesman's' hands is simply dangerous.
"Free design doesn't
come cheap as it often results in a scheme where it is obvious a 'salesman' has included too many units & appliances"
A considered design factors in the entire space from the lighting, flooring & architectural detailing in tandem with the kitchen design. The design should not result in a scheme that makes you feel like you're cooking in the living room or lounging in the kitchen. The lines should be blurred and as the kitchen is the largest physical component of the space, it is critical that clients handpick a designer that has the skillset to realise an overall 'flowing' design. Free design doesn't come cheap as it often results in a scheme where it is obvious a 'salesman' has included too many units & appliances. Bluntly, all you see and feel is a kitchen. On the contrary, a considered kitchen design undertaken by a skilled designer respects the entire space where the flow of light, air and energy is prevalent. These designs stand the test of time and means kitchens don't need to be changed as quickly as 'trends' change. I personally never consider any of the kitchen detailing or wishlist until I feel I have considered all the components of the room and brainstormed the perfect spatial layout. I feel every space has an optimum spatial layout so the success of any scheme relies on me finding it!"

Mal Corboy, Multi-award winning Interior Designer
"As a designer there is a big difference between layout of a kitchen and a full design. Layout can be a simple sketch on paper giving the basic position of cooktop, sink etc and really has no value. Design is bringing in the form, function and specification of the space and should always have a value attached to it as a good design will take the designer several hours to complete.
"Design involves bringing time, skill and empathy to the process of making something" - Johnny Grey
Johnny Grey, British Designer, Author and Educator The average amount of time one of the big kitchen companies sales person spends on your kitchen design is around 90 minutes. After the layout is developed on the CAD system another layer is switched on and up comes a 3D model showing the volumes of the cabinetry and the shape of the room. Does this constitute design or is it a layout? I don’t think this needs answering as it is pretty obvious. Design involves bringing time, skill and empathy to the process of making something. I like to think of design as a verb, not a noun, the creating an experience not a product. To justify the cost of installing a new kitchen and the time householders will spend in them over the years it has to be a worthwhile investment. Analysis, careful detailing and good communication will also save money in the long run because it will endure hard use well and you won’t have to replace your kitchen so soon. A design service can be offered free and there is a cost to the company supplying the kitchen or to the customer. Either way it is a worthwhile investment as you make a desirable space with authenticity, functionality and character."
Regina Sturrock, President and Principal Designer – Regina Sturrock Design Inc. A beautifully-designed space is never easily defined but is instantly recognizable because it simply feels right; holistic and wonderfully free-spirited. All creative concepts, integrated components, and the accumulated details may only be conceived through thoughtfulness and are guided by a keen understanding of the home and the people who will live there. No formulas or quick generic layouts can accomplish this. With cut-and-paste solutions, we lose the liaison between form and function and the beguiling fluidity of the envelope where every small detail is an intrinsic part of the whole."
Renee Mascari, Kitchen Designer, Interior Designer and CEO Preparing a kitchen design concept is so much more than just a plan layout. Today’s lifestyle and passion for open living spaces challenges the designer to consider so much more. A kitchen design must consider the needs and activities of multigenerational family life. Spaces that have the ability to create mood, stimulate all five senses, sight, sound, smell, touch and taste. Good Kitchen design must deliver on all these aspects."

Throughout the 18th century, only the wealthiest European homes had bidets, which were often decorated with fancy adornments such as rosewood veneer, gilded bronze and crystal flakes. Hundreds of years later, the electronic bidet hit the market in 1960, combining the bidet with the toilet, and it slowly began to make its way into global culture. There are now a variety of shower toilets available on the market to suit all budgets. Manufactures such as Geberit, TOTO and Duravit are leading the way bringing new designs and advanced technology to market.

From concept to completion Kuche & Bagno have joined forces with Springburn Joinery to specialise in bespoke cabinetry to enhance and maximise available space within your bathroom. With the evolution of bathroom design here in the UK, concealing unsightly pipework cisterns and shower valves by constructing stud walls is a standard practise but what about all the space within that studwork? By utilising this valuable space for storage is a natural progression and Kuche & Bagno’s bespoke cabinetry service is a great solution. Interiors of cabinets can be designed to each client’s exacting specification including width depth height and lighting schemes. Using reflective mirror not only allows for your storage to be secret it gives depth and softness to the room with an automatic feeling of space, mirror also allows detail throughout the room to be magnified and highlighted. n For more information contact: kucheandbagno.co.uk | 01788 866930
