s late as the early 1960’s many homes in Britain did not have a bathroom, let alone a shower. Fast forward 50 years and our bathrooms have become an important room in our homes – a sanctuary to lock ourselves away from the fast pace of life. It’s not unusual to find bluetooth speaker mirror cabinets alongside ambient, mood and task lighting in bathrooms now. MODERN SHOWER In 1767 Englishman William Feetham invented the first modern shower. Showers did not become common until the late 20th century, but are they really overtaking the bath in the nation’s preference? Certainly a shower is timesaving and more environmentally friendly.
A typical bath holds around 200 litres of water. You could shower for 22 minutes before you reached that level. But it is hard to beat a bath for soothing away aches and stress.

There has certainly been an increase in the number of bathrooms per household. More people are now opting for ensuites to all bedrooms with most of them having only a shower, leaving one bathroom in the home to have a beautiful feature freestanding bath. Back in 2013 one client had a small, compact bathroom and really didn’t use her bath at all. She longed for

EXPENSIVE MATERIALS DO NOTHING TO RESCUE WEAk IDEAS
When starting any project the thing to remember is that there is no substitute for experience. “Expensive materials do nothing to rescue weak ideas” explains Gisela. “Conversely, great design lifts a project from being average to excellent, irrespective of budget.” The latest project is based in the Cotswolds with stunning views across the Stroud valleys.

“The Cotswolds is a new location for us, with new contractors and trades but the same designer.” “Lisa and I have taken the best of what has become our ‘house style’ and given it a twist with bespoke features.” Space is the biggest luxury but without careful thought, it can offer no more utility value than a small kitchen - with further to walk! The main working area faces into the room with all of the main kitchen appliances close at hand. Simple clean lines, complement a coherent selection of materials and finishes.
“We are delighted with the twelve cube cupboards.” An awkward corner is transformed into a bold flash of colour and very useful storage. “People think it is installation art before seeing quite how many things are hidden behind the doors. We receive plaudits from every visitor.” With so much experience, does installation get easier? “Execution is everything.” The job of transforming boxes of materials into a finished room should never be taken for granted. “You would be
amazed by how many questions arise from the fitters. Having expert advice available in the moment, prevents delays and ensures projects run to budget.” Is there another project around the corner for Gisela and Lisa? “I think I have done enough for now, and would quite like to enjoy the fruits of my efforts. However, we have just visited a building plot nearby - any excuse for a Cotswold walk.” n

Radiators come in a vast array of shapes and sizes but did you know radiators are by no means a one trick pony? The evolution of the radiator throughout the years has seen a significant shift from cast iron to the more efficient heat conductor aluminium. The humble radiators' biggest rival comes from under floor heating. It's by no means a new form of heating as a version of it dates back to the Roman times, but now it's really taken hold in new build installations. Radiators are fighting back and reinventing themselves in all kinds of formats, our favourite has to be the Excelsior used here in one of its more unusual applications as a banister - such an ingenious way of heating a stairwell. The reinvention doesn't stop there, all kinds of shapes can be accommodated using Zehnder's tailor made service offering angled and curved designs as well as using the radiator as a partition wall to segment an open living space. The piece de resistance though comes from Bisque who can paint select radiators from their collection in virtually any colour you desire to beautifully accompany your carefully chosen Farrow & Ball or Little Greene paint, to name a few. An array of metallic and iridescent finishes are available also to compliment the range. n

A stay in a boutique hotel means relaxing in luxury, with the softest bedding, chic furniture, impeccable decor and a lavish lavatory. But why leave all that indulgence behind, when you could have a boutique-inspired bathroom all of your own back at home?
Interior designer Lisa Melvin recently completed a project that she calls the Wellness Suite. This stunning boutique style bathroom would fit in perfectly in a high-end hotel in Mayfair or Kensington, and it’s also marvellous inspiration for anyone looking to create a modern, stylish and functional bathroom. ď ľ

Finishing touches Paying attention to the smallest details is essential in creating a decadent bathroom, and recent innovations have led to a seemingly endless range of choice.
When it comes to taps and ironmongery, homeowners are no longer limited to chrome or brass finishes. It's the little details and finishing touches that can really bring even the smallest of rooms to life, and a child's bedroom is the perfect opportunity to get creative! Focus on creating a fun, motivational personal space for them to enjoy that reflects their interests and hobbies. It's important to keep in mind that children's bedrooms are often multi-functional rooms used for sleeping, studying, relaxing and playing so storage should be a key factor. Fitted wardrobes, like these from Crown are a great solution; they can be designed to fit the available space and the handles can be uniquely chosen. n All available to order from Gallery Showroom

Wet AREA Matt Toms, Product Development Manager at Impey Showers discusses which is best for your project. Usually the choice of shower enclosure or wetroom will come down to personal preference based on functionality or aesthetics. Innovation has meant wetrooms are now reliable and easier to create than ever, while shower enclosure options now include level access giving a similar wet room experience. Enclosures are possibly a more stylish out of this the box solution but the wet room allows more design flexibility and individuality. With this range of choice, how do you go about choosing what is best for your project?
SHOWER tray 1 Suitability of the substrate – wetrooms are suitable for all floor types, but the need to excavate an existing concrete floor can make a shower enclosure more cost-effective. On other substrates, you may need floor formers to adjust over joists and existing pipe work, or a shower tray may need to be installed higher over the elements. 2 Drainage – Early specification makes wetroom drainage easy with provision for sub-level drainage. In existing properties this may not be possible, so running above level pipework means a traditional shower enclosure would be best. 3 Level access - traditionally only a wetroom could provide level access, however sub-level shower trays area really great option to deliver a flush-level feel. It’s
