Welcome
from the President
Matt East Students’ Union President 2009-11
Hello, and welcome to Anglia Ruskin Students’ Union! When I started at ARU I got involved with the SU straight away. I made friends by joining a sports club, becoming a part-time officer and working in the bar. I learned important skills that really helped during my studies and will help me in the future when I apply for jobs. I can honestly say that getting involved in the Union was the best decision I made at University and everyone who works for the Union is there to ensure that you will also have a great experience. We have many new opportunities for you to get involved in. From skills development classes via our Apple accredited Regional Training Centre, to fitness classes in our Cambridge dance studio; I’m sure that we can offer you something you are interested in!
www.angliastudent.com | Putting you first
We concentrate most of our efforts on academic representation to ensure that your voice is heard during your time here. The other elected Officers and I are here to represent you. We also work with student reps who inform us of any issues that affect you or your course. Our student reps have helped make some huge changes to courses throughout the University and I’m positive they will continue to do so in the future. If you come across any issues, simply have a new idea or want to get involved please get in touch. You can find the team at any of our SU offices, or contact me directly at m.east@angliastudent.com, we’re all looking forward to meeting you!

The Students’ Union is here to represent, serve and support each and every Anglia Ruskin Student; we are independent from the University and exist to ensure your voice is heard. ‘Putting you first’ is our tagline and is at the forefront of everything the Students’ Union does. We provide many opportunities, facilities and services to ensure that you have the best possible University experience. We have trained advisers who work in our free, fully independent and impartial Advice Service which is available to any Anglia Ruskin student with any problem. We also coordinate, train and support the Student Course Reps who represent their fellow students and voice any concerns they might have at Programme Committees and Faculty

meetings. The sports teams, societies and Cambridge gym are also run by the Students’ Union. More information on the Union’s services can be found later on in this handbook. Why Does the Union do what it does? The Students’ Union has a set of vision and values, which underpin all work that the Students’ Union does. These values ensure that all staff and officers working within the organisation remain focused on representing students. When decisions are made within the Union it is important that the vision and values are upheld, not only to ensure that we remain focused at all times, but also because they are a part of the Union’s Constitution. What is the Constitution? The Officers and Students’ Union as a whole are governed by a working document called the Constitution. The Constitution is essentially a set of rules that determine how the Union runs and, when necessary, the Constitution is updated by a motion which is passed at Union Council. Any student at Anglia Ruskin can submit motions to Union Council to change the Constitution, or to mandate officers on a particular issue.

Changing for you
Why does the Union exist at all? Are we making important changes for students at Anglia Ruskin? These are the kind of questions we ask ourselves on a daily basis and this is because we are going through a process called the Students’ Union Evaluation Initiative (SUEI). SUEI helps students’ unions to focus on their core objectives, ours being representation, advice and experience. It also helps us to engage with students in our membership. We began the evaluation initiative in 2008 and were assessed in 2010 on the changes we had made over the two year period. Anglia Ruskin Students’ Union was the first multi-site, million+ union to receive the silver award, putting us in the top five students’ unions in the country. We have now embarked on SUEI 2, which is the second phase of the initiative; where we aim to delve deeper into the workings of the Union and ask ourselves even harder questions to make changes to benefit you. You can get involved in the Union in a number of different ways, all of which are explained throughout this handbook. Simply by being involved in the Union ensures you are part of the initiative.

Elections & Democracy Democratic structures and the student voice are at the heart of the Students’ Union which is why our annual elections period is one of the most important times in the Students’ Union calendar. We are aware that sometimes these subjects can seem a little dry or dull; however this democracy is the very essence of the Union and is essential to its success.
The Board of Trustees is the governing body of the Students’ Union which take responsibility for a number of things like ensuring that the Union complies with the Constitution, complies with charity law, ensuring that the Union is using its resources effectively to achieve the organisational objectives and that it has financial stability.
The Union is run by a team of 5 annually elected paid full-time officers and a number of volunteer part-time officers with the support and expertise of several full and part-time members of permanent staff.
Any student at Anglia Ruskin University can apply to the current Board of Trustees to become a Student Trustee. This is a fantastic opportunity to become more involved in the business side of the Students’ Union.
Officers are students who have been elected to represent the whole student body. Their role is to push forward student campaigns and they sit on the highest University Committees to make sure the student voice is heard. We have two types of officer: paid full-time, and part-time volunteers.
Elected officers and student reps are kept up to-to-date on current issues by the support of the Quality Monitoring Co-ordinator who collates student and committee feedback, analyses satisfaction Any surveys and reads student reports from internal and external can vot e or sources.
If you would like to become a fulltime or part-time officer you can run in our annual elections held in March. Becoming an officer is extremely rewarding and will provide you with a great experience during or after your time at University. If you are elected into a full-time officer role you also become a Trustee of the Students’ Union. 8
stand in the S election U s.
During 2009-10 the elected officers represented students at over 400 meetings with the University and student reps achieved successful outcomes on individual pathways.

Campaigns
Over 1000 stude n the o ts voted in pinion 2009. poll in D choo on’t forge tt se camp your prio o rity aign in the by voting op poll 2 inion 010.
Campaigns are a big part of any Union and last year saw 1114 students vote in the second Opinion Poll during the Freshers period. This gave students the chance to vote for the campaign that they would like to see at the top of the Union’s priority list, which resulted in a campaign for electronic submission and feedback in 2009-10.
Graduation
E-submission As a result of this campaign the University passed a paper at the Learning, Teaching and Assessment Committee in May 2010 committing to a pilot of online assessment and feedback. This pilot will look at what is required to run online submission and feedback. It will run across all five
14
faculties and begin in September 2010. - We created posters, set up a page on the website; set up an epetition; used the SU e-newsletter; put the report in the Apex; used Facebook to inform students about what was happening and get further feedback on esubmission. - We also asked lecturers to sign the e-petition, showing the University that it would be beneficial for all stakeholders. - We wrote a report on electronic submission and feedback based on the evidence we had collected via the petition, surveys and from other institutions, which was then taken to the University.
This campaign was brought to us by students in the first semester following the graduation ceremonies held in November. Concerns were raised over value for money, timing and a lack of celebration. Following our recommendations a number of changes have been made to the graduation ceremonies for 2010 including videos showcasing student work and the hand over of scrolls.

Changing for you... Higher Education Funding This campaign was considered to be extremely important as 2009 saw the beginning of the Browne Review on Higher Education Funding and the most controversial General Election for a generation. To promote the Day of Action we ran a stunt called Debt Sentence on Halloween where students and officers dressed up as zombies and performed the ‘Thriller’ dance in a number of locations in the city including Market Square and the front of Kings College. Over 500 fliers detailing the Town Takeover event were handed out to on-looking members of the public, raising the
awareness of Higher Education Funding. - A video of the stunt was created to highlight the issues with the current funding system. We also held a regional day of action in November which was attended by over 200 students. We marched through the city of Cambridge and held a debate with guest speakers including Wes Streeting, President of the National Union of Students. The day received live coverage on BBC Look East, ITV, student and local newspapers and every radio station in the area.
Other campaigns we ran included: Vote for Students, HELP week, Curriculum Rationalisation, and Healthy Living, Healthy Mind. Information about these campaigns can be found in our Annual Report on www.angliastudent.com. www.angliastudent.com | Putting you first
We are nationally recognised for the training and support of our student reps and independent Advice Service. More students are involved than ever before in clubs and societies, campaigns, elections and representation. We have employed staff at Peterborough and Fulbourn to give students representation. We have become the first ever Students’ Union in partnership with Apple education and now offer training courses to improve the skills of our students. By representing you on University committees we have made sure that urgent University messages are sent by SMS. To increase student involvement with the SU we have doubled the number of Give It A Go sessions that take place. There is so much more, please check our website to see what we’re changing for you. 15

Be the voice. Be a
Student Rep
Student Reps The Students’ Union co-ordinates the student representation system and works alongside the University to ensure that students are represented throughout the institution.
How much work is it? As much as you want it to be but as a minimum:
What are Student Reps? Some of the most important people in the University: they are elected by other students to be their voice. Student Reps sit on committees and attend meetings with staff to tell them what students think about their university experience. Every year group of every pathway should have at least one Student Rep.
(1) All Student Reps should attend their own Programme Committee (your pathway will be part of a ‘Programme’ of related pathways). There is one every semester and they last 1 – 2 hours. There are other meetings – we will let you know when they are happening – and you can get involved with these if you want to.
Why would I want to be a Student Rep? If you care about the quality of your educational experience (remember you are paying for it!); how you are being taught; and the facilities and support that Anglia Ruskin University provides for you, as a Student Rep you can influence decision making on those issues. It also gives you a great opportunity to Any learn some important t n e d u transferable skills, t s can a enhance your CV e and meet lots of new becom nt people. e stud
(2) It is an important part of your role that you ask other students who are studying on your pathway what their views are, that you represent those views and feed back on outcomes.
rep
18
(3) Your Student Rep Coordinator will send you regular updates and we ask that you check your emails regularly and give us feedback. (4) All Student Reps are expected to complete and return the short Student Rep Survey that the Student Rep Coordinators send out towards the end of the academic year.
www.angliastudent.com | Student Reps
How do I volunteer to be a Student Rep? During your first few weeks at University someone from the Students’ Union or one of your lecturers will talk to you about how you can become a Student Rep – if not, come and see us in the SU office.

How will I know what to do? The SU employs two Student Rep Co-ordinators to support and train Student Reps. They are very knowledgeable and provide guidance to Reps to help them to get the best from their role. Where can I find out more information? You can find us in the SU Offices – if you don’t see us at one of your sessions in the first couple of weeks, come and say hello! What problems do students take to the Advice Service?
What other help is available from the Advice Service?
Advisers are trained to help students with a whole range of issues: from helping to resolve a grievance relating to their educational experience; assisting if things go wrong in University accommodation; advising on an academic appeal; providing guidance on the University’s regulations; accompanying students to meetings and hearings; or just to providing a listening ear.
The Advice Service produces a range of leaflets. The ‘academic’ leaflets aim to interpret the rules and regulations of the University in a user-friendly way and the ‘welfare’ leaflets aim to provide basic help – a full list is shown below. Information is also available on our website www.angliastudent.com.
Who do the Advisers work with?
Number of new enquiries the Advice Service received between Aug ‘09 and Apr ‘10
Advisers have access to other departments and agencies both within the University and externally. When appropriate, and with the student’s permission, they are able to liaise with the Student Advisers allocated to faculties, who help students with facultyspecific issues, and with Student Services Advisers, who provide learning support, counselling, financial assistance and careers guidance. Often a student has a whole raft of issues and the Advisers will give them time to sift through these so that the appropriate help may be accessed.

Categories of assistance Advisers worked hard to assist student to ensure that their voices were heard and this had a direct impact on retention, a factor that has been acknowledged by senior members of the University. The main category of casework is related to academic issues but Advisers also assisted students with: •Health and personal concerns •Financial problems •Accommodation issues •Employment rights
www.angliastudent.com | Advice Service
How do I arrange to see an Adviser? Students may telephone, write to, e-mail or visit the Advice Service in person. Advisers respond to students promptly – over the nine month period of the 2009-10 academic year, 98% of requests for appointments received a reply within one working day. Students from Fulbourn and Peterborough are assisted by the Cambridge campus Advisers and appointments via telephone and email are routinely provided. Students from the University’s UK and international partner colleges may seek assistance relating to academic issues and this is provided via the Cambridge campus Advice Service.

We’re constantly referring back to our website throughout this handbook, so what’s so good about it? We’ve tried to build a site that you will want to use every day. We’ve created a site that is as interactive as possible; the site allows you to communicate with us, it’s not just a means for us to tell you what’s going on but for you to tell us what’s going on.
The homepage is made up of ‘widgets’ that you can move around and remove as you see fit, you can build your own homepage that’s centred around what you like. You could choose to have BBC iplayer or YouTube on your homepage or our Twitter and Facebook feeds or any other of our many widgets.
Registering on the website lets you take full advantage of its features; like joining clubs and societies, buying things from our online shop or buying tickets for our events and Give It A Go’s. Registering takes two minutes and it’s free. You will also be able to join in with the online discussion boards on the news, clubs and society pages.
