Thanksgiving Host Etiquette

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

14

INVITE YOUR FAMILY FIRST! For many of us, family is scattered across the country; and while Thanksgiving always falls on the third Thursday of November, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give them advance notice to travel.

INQUIRE ABOUT DUTIES AND RESTRICTIONS! Be upfront with your guests well ahead of the big day to confirm any allergies or restrictions in advance.

SET AN ARRIVAL TIME! To avoid unreasonable lags between courses, decide what time you plan on eating and plan the event backwards. This will help you getting to the hour you want to welcome your guests.

MAKE YOUR GUESTS FEEL COMFORTABLE! Dining with your immediate family is comfortable, but Thanksgiving dinner is often about coming together with those in your larger community.

GUIDE EVERYONE THROUGH DINNER! Gently lead your guests through polite table talk in between bites.

Thanksgiving Guest Etiquette NOTES

ALWAYS, ALWAYS BRING SOMETHING! Even if your host(ess) insists that everything is taken care of, a host can never have too many bottles of wine or too many candles burning around the house.

ARRIVE ON TIME AND DON’T CANCEL! There is truly nothing worse than a guest who cancels at the last minute. Oh, and also be sure to arrive right on time – not early!

DRESS APPROPRIATELY! At the very least, make sure your clothes are clean and pressed. As a true sign of consideration, dress one notch up.

WAIT TO EAT UNTIL EVERYONE HAS BEEN SERVED! …and the host has sat down. Make sure that everyone has their food and the host has sat down and is ready to eat before you touch your meal.

SAY THANK YOU! After the day it’s always nice to send a hand-written Thank You note or e-mail. At the very least, a sweet text message thanking the host for the event is always appreciated.
