T H E S I S | MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE 16 | RYERSON MOVABLE POSSESSIONS: ALTERNATIVE HOUSING THROUGH ADAPTABLE DESIGN Poor Communities around the world have developed architecture without architects. Subsidized low-income housing has been built as if to provide only a short-term solution. Poverty and lack of affordable housing is not short-term problem but an ongoing issue that demands creative adaptable solutions for a changing world. Adaptable architecture is essential for the redesign of affordable housing that is environmentally, economically and socially sustainable. In order to mend the broken bond between low-incomes and the architectural quality of space, this design research strives to both defend and produce affordable architectural alternatives to housing through the use of adaptable design principles and strategies found within Barbados’ Vernacular Architecture, the Chattel House

Adaptable Architecture consists of buildings designed to have the capacity to respond to economic, environmental, and/or social changes through physical transformation and is viewed by many as being less permanent and therefore less valuable than ‘fixed’ building typologies. This thesis will explore the opportunities for deploying Adaptable Architecture within the low-income sector of the built environment by challenging its perceived limitations and conventional responses in contemporary Barbadian society.

TO ANIMATE THE BATHURST AND MARKHAM STREET SIDEWALK EXPERIENCE, IT IS IMPORTANT TO ENSURE THAT RETAIL ATGRADE IS DIVERSE, FINE GRAINED, AND OF HIGH-QUALITY. ACTIVE STOREFRONTS WHICH SPILL OUT ONTO THE SIDEWALKS SHOULD BE INSTALLED WHERE POSSIBLE TO ENCOURAGE GREATER INTERACTION BETWEEN PEDESTRIANS, CONSUMERS AND RETAIL. THERE ARE NUMEROUS FORMS THAT ACTIVE STOREFRONTS CAN TAKE, WHICH INCLUDE GARAGE DOORS, FRENCH DOORS, AND OUTDOOR PATIOS.

CABILLA MANOR COTTAGE
TOTNES CONSTRUCTION
The Cabilla Manor Cottage Project focused on designing a vacation home for the Owners of the Cabilla Manor to rent out to visiting guests. This cottage was designed with no fossil fuels. This project was treated more as a restoration project within the existing Tutton Ruin.
In the summer of 2013, I organized a group of Architecture students to help take a beautiful derelict Grade II* listed medieval house located in Totnes, a small town in England, towards being a living farmhouse, using natural materials. Basic training was given by a conservation Architect and a skilled carpenter.
Plymouth, UK
CABILLA OPERA HOUSE Plymouth, UK
The Cabilla Manor Opera House project involved designing an Opera House without the use of any fossil fuels within its natural landscape. The “No Fossil Fuels limitation presented many challenges, however with the given landscape, the Opera House structure was designed with the use of its surrounding resources and traditional construction methods.
!
CULTURAL HUB Plymouth, UK The Millbay Cultural Hub was based on designing a cultural hub for a sub culture of the designers choice. The project was focused on creating a cultural hub for college and University students who may suffer from Claustrophobia, Agorophobia and Social Phobia.
