T H E S I S | MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE 2016 | RYERSON MOVABLE POSSESSIONS: ALTERNATIVE HOUSING THROUGH ADAPTABLE DESIGN Poor Communities around the world have developed architecture without architects. Subsidized low-income housing has been built as if to provide only a short-term solution. Poverty and lack of affordable housing is not short-term problem but an ongoing issue that demands creative adaptable solutions for a changing world. Adaptable architecture is essential for the redesign of affordable housing that is environmentally, economically and socially sustainable. In order to mend the broken bond between low-incomes and the architectural quality of space, this design research strives to both defend and produce affordable architectural alternatives to housing through the use of adaptable design principles and strategies found within Barbados’ Vernacular Architecture, the Chattel House

MARKHAM STREET STILL HOSTS A NUMBER OF ENTERTAINMENT VENUES, HOWEVER, THE SMALL AND MEDIUM-SCALED LIVEPERFORMANCE LOCALES THAT EXCITED THE CITY DURING PREVIOUS GENERATIONS HAVE GRADUALLY DISPERSED TO OTHER VIEW B LOCATIONS OVER THE YEARS. ENCOURAGING THE RETURN OF A MIX OF CULTURAL AND ENTERTAINMENT VENUES INTO THE AREA WOULD FURTHER STIMULATE THE PUBLIC REALM, ESPECIALLY WITH THE USE OF ACTIVE STOREFRONTS TO DRAW INTERIOR ACTIVITIES OUT ONTO THE STREET.

G I L L E S P I E & S T E E L | JUNIOR ARCHITECT | BARBADOS Gillespie & Steel Associates Ltd. is a Caribbean Company offering full architectural services, interior design services, urban planning and project management services to clients throughout the Eastern Caribbean. Their team is committed to providing a high standard of service through design quality, attention to detail, and cost control.
LEWIS RENOVATION
PEARSON COTTAGE
After many years, this four bedroom home was in need of repair. The client requested a completely new layout where essentially half of the home was demolished and redesigned to suit the client’s favoured contemporary style within a new open and socially inviting spatial plan, while maintaining its vernacular make up-all within a tight budget. Duties: Redesign of the Home, one on one meetings with the Client, Working Drawings and on Site visits.
Upon completing my BA (Hons) degree in Architecture, I received a full time position at Gillespie & Steel as a Junior Architect where I was able to further my experience with the CAD Software, Vectorworks, and means of becoming an Architect. Pearson’s cottage was to be treated as a mini replica of the original Home. Duties: Complete the working drawings for Tender

S T U D I O P R O J E C T S | BACHELOR (HONS) OF ARCHITECTURE | PLYMOUTH CABILLA MANOR The Cabilla Manor Cottage Project focused on designing a vacation home for the Owners of the Cabilla Manor to rent out to visiting guests. This cottage was designed with no fossil fuels. This project was treated more as a restoration project within the existing Tutton Ruin.
CABILLA OPERA The Cabilla Manor Opera House project involved designing an Opera House without the use of any fossil fuels within its natural landscape. The “No Fossil Fuels limitation presented many challenges, however with the given landscape, the Opera House structure was designed with the use of its surrounding resources and traditional construction methods.
CULTURAL HUB The Millbay Cultural Hub was based on designing a cultural hub for a sub culture of the designers choice. The project was focused on creating a cultural hub for college and University students who may suffer from Claustrophobia, Agorophobia and Social Phobia.

TOTNES RESTORATION - ON SITE EXPERIENCE
In the summer of 2013, I organized a group of Architecture students to help take a beautiful derelict Grade II* listed medieval house located in Totnes, a small town in England, towards being a living farmhouse, using natural materials. Basic training was given by a conservation Architect and a skilled carpenter. TOTNES RESTORATION - ON SITE EXPERIENCE
