8th LISBON’S PHOTOBOOK FAIR Meeting point for Photobook lovers, this annual event which gathers authors, independent publishers and photographic editions, photobooks and photozines specialized bookstores; the only truly event in Portugal dedicated entirely to photobooks, highlighted by an ambiance of proximity, informal and intergenerational, where direct communication and experience sharing happens, Lisbon’s Photobook Fair has been developing as an Active Platform, a dynamic hub which values the editorial creation in the photographic domain, having a large and diverse audience. Peru and the Ibero-American context During the 8th Edition of Lisbon’s Photobook Fair will be highlighted photobooks and photozines from ibero-american countries with special focus to Peru, which is this year’s invited country. Parallel to the peruvian photobooks showcase and in order to create a narrower proximity with this editorial context, the Fair’s organization together with Arquivo Municipal de Lisboa | Fotográfico combined efforts to get the coming of some individualities that have been highlighting in that context, as artists. teachers, curators, publishers who will participate in talks and debates which will occur during the event. So, it’s expected the presence of Fernando Fujimoto and Musuk Nolte, artists and co-editors of the publisher KWY. Roberto Huarcaya, artist and photography teacher, editor of Centro de la Imagen de Lima to Sueño de la Razón’s CDI magazine, a latin american photography magazine and was also co-director of co-director of the Photography Biennial of Lima and Lima Photo. From Argentina, Julieta Escardó, photographer, publisher, cultural manager and teacher of contemporary photography is expected. He directs FELIFA, the Fair of Books of Photos of Author, that will have the 16th edition this year in Buenos Aires, and has already made 14 editions in several cities of Latin America. Director of the Editorial La Luminosa and is part of the editorial team of the magazine Sueño de La Razón.

From Spain, Olmo Gónzalez, artist, editor and co-responsible of Fiebre Photobook from Madrid who is going to approach the transatlantic relationships related to the ibero-american context and the current status of photobook publishing in Spain. Both will travel to Lisbon with the support of Iberia Airline. We are sure that this year’s invitees will contribute to enrich our own discovery and comprehension of the ibero-american context in general and the peruvian, in particular. Peru, given its specificities will not let, however, to not to inscribe itself in the transnational context every time more dynamic, with a renovated generation of new authors and projects linked to photography. Paying attention to this fact and following the Fair’s own project, the peruvian editorial production is going to be contextualized inside its geography and also inside the photographic and editorial production of Latin America.

Exhibition of Ibero American Photobooks In this sense it was created in a collaborative basis, the Exhibition of Ibero American Photobooks, resulting from an international open call, which register the participation of more than 140 authors and about 15 publishers. This collaborative project gathered about 150 books coming from 13 ibero-american countries, Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Equador, Espanha, Mexico, Panamá, Peru, Portugal, Uruguai e Venezuela, and it will present a selection of the current production in the publishing domain dedicated to the ibero-american photography and with this revealing to the portuguese audience, and not only, the quality and originality of the production coming from several Latin American countries, from Spain and of course, Portugal. Poster: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0Bz_NoENHidt1WHRtZzcwTWVXSDA After the Fair, this exhibition will go to Madrid and to A Estrada, at Galicia. In this 8th edition will be given continuity to some of the initiatives already started in the previous ones and that will, for sure, to continue to feed the interest and satisfaction of both public and participants. The important joint-venture with Arquivo Municipal de Lisboa facilitates this meeting around the photobook and remembers to each photography lover, the cultural relevance of this space, highlighting once more that Arquivo Municipal de Lisboa | Fotográfico is the only public institution in the city fully dedicated to photography.

Talks and Presentations During the three days of the event, Presentations, Talks and Debates around Photography and more specifically in photobook publishing, will take place. In this year’s edition, the spotlight will be centered in the photographic and editorial context of Peru in particular, as well as the Ibero American in general, with the presence of several speakers from Peru and other Ibero American countries. Several questions in the national plan and other aspects more technical. related to production, will also be approached in the Talks. The final program will be disclosed in the beginning of November in the Fair’s website and also in the Arquivo Municipal de Lisboa one.

Self Publishing Authors participations

The consolidation of the activities dedicated to Self Publishing Author’s and respective publishing projects are in the center of the main concerns of the Fair’s organization. Arquivo’s atrium will receive the Photobook Dummies Exhibition. This show has been triggering an increasing interest close the Self Publishing Author’s themselves, as well with readers community, year after year. This exhibition‘s intention is to favour editorial creativity in the photobook context and allow, in some cases, the gathering of partnerships which can help to concretize the projects. In the Arquivo’s Reading Room and during two days, several Self Publishing Authors or Authors Collectives will present their own photographic projects. In the room destinated to the Photobook Market the main stand will be dedicated to Self Publishing Authors being used as a collective space to promote and sell self published books. The Photobook Market One of the fundamental elements of Lisbon’s Photobook Fair is its Photobook Market. During the three days, this Fair’s section will contribute for the meeting between the public and the several actors with a relevant role in the photobook context. At Arquivo Fotográfico’ main room and close to the Authors Space will be present the main Portuguese Independent Photobook Publishers, some of the Independent Bookstores in Portugal, as well as their pairs from other countries. At this space, all photobook and photozines enthusiasts will be surprised by the diversity of the editorial proposals and eventually buy books, which include both new releases and rare editions. We can affirm that the Photobook Market, with its thousands of books, will be the best photobook bookshop in the country during a weekend.

Workshops In this same weekend will also take place two workshops organized by the education service of Arquivo Municipal de Lisboa | Fotográfico: the first to be done in family and targeted to the younger and the second targeted to adults. The third edition of the workshop “Page Turner: fotografia, livro e auto-edição”, which will have a new attractive format, during its three days will explore perspectives, strategies and other less conventional forms of thinking and building a photobook, being targeted to artists and professionals, students, teachers and researchers in the photographic arts domain.

LEOPOLD’S LEGACY – EDITION BY OLIVER LEU

(http://oliverleu.com)(Alemanha) Published by Malenki (https://malenki.net Presentation in English Leopold’s Legacy, by Oliver Leu deals with the forms of representation of the colonial history in Belgium. In his speech from the throne in 1865 king Leopold II dreamed of a Belgium that would be bigger, stronger and more beautiful one day. When he became the private owner of the Congo in 1885 his dream started to become true. It ended when the Congo atrocities became known and the king had to hand his colony over to the Belgium state in 1908. In his project Oliver Leu is looking at the different aspects of the representation of the colonial past that are visible in monuments, buildings and cityscapes. He is also drawn to the hidden parts of this history. The artist questions how monuments change their meaning when we look at them today and how the perception of Leopold‘s role as a glorious king has altered in the last 100 years or more. Oliver Leu

The concept is based on the children’s game where you hide a treasure under the glass and bury it – in order to rediscover it on the next day… or many years later. In the second part of the project I decided to return to my “Secrets” and to revise them. To rediscover my connection with my land – after more than 7 years of living abroad, I will revisit Russia and find, if that modern, changed country resonates with my soul and something Russian in me. The design of the book will play with half-pages, folded pages, and texts hidden in between, in order to create a meta-photography, a storytelling in several layers. [...]
