ABOUT ME LISE DERULE

I am fascinated by architecture and the world of construction, which is growing quickly today, and hence decided to pursue the double degree of architecture and civil engineering at the INSA in Strasbourg. This portfolio presents the most significant projects I have worked on during my study. Architecture, urban planning, plastic arts and many more. I had the opportunity to carry out different type of projects. I like the creativity in this field. My favorite is to draw and to graph.

URBANISM PROJECTS

BEHALA

WESTHAFEN, BERLIN

Project made during my Erasmus semester in Berlin, by group of 3. Revaluation of the boat station Westafen in Berlin. Throughout my semester in Berlin, we worked on the city’s western port, which is currently occupied by the company Behala. This exercise was part of the overall project of the whole school around the Berlin Ring. Westhafen is located near one of the stops on the Ringbahn. We had to create a new urban design structure, which would reflect the future and the functioning of the port and at the same time become a new urban district in a very special environment. We decided to divide our new district into several parts: the south island would be reserved for port operations and industry, while in the north there would be a campus and student housing. The entrance to the district was designed as a business and commercial district, while the central island would be a museum island. Our urban fabric was dense and composed of tall buildings to the east, while it was looser to the west, even giving way to a large park in front of the university. To preserve the identity of the port, we chose to build student housing and a market place with containers. Perspective from the entrance plateforme (right) View drawn by Lise DERULE

HETEROTOPIA

«READY, STEADY, FARM!»

Architecture and urbanism project of the 4th year, by group of 4. Creation of an urban farm in the Rotterdam district of Strasbourg.

For my 4th year, we worked on an architecture and urbanism project, on the interesting subject of Climatic Heterotopia. In evolutionnary sciences, heterotopy is an evolutionary change in the spatial arrangement of a subject’s development, complementary to heterochrony . In philosophy heterotopia is a concept elaborated by Michel Foucault to describe certain cultural, institutional and discursive spaces that are somehow ‘other’: disturbing, intense, incompatible, contradictory or transforming. On the basis of these two concepts and taking into account the current energy issue, we have developed a strategy, firstly urbanistic and then architectural, to reconsider the Rotterdam City of Strasbourg. This city is historic and is also a very special part of the town. In order to reinvigorate this sensitive area, we decided to propose a mixed program that would include, an urban farm and sport facilities. Our strategy is to develop spaces facilitating exchanges between the inhabitants of the city, the inhabitants of the surrounding neighbourhoods and the various actors of the urban farm (researchers, farmers...).

In the second half of the year, we divided our group of 4 into 2 pairs, in order to work in more detail on our heterotopia project. We worked on an architectural scale, detailing the eastern part of the project where we had located the schools. Situated close to our large farm space, the challenge was to create links between the schools and the urban farm, while making a welcoming space at the entrance to our neighbourhood. We wanted to create the two schools with luminous and generous spaces that would be conducive to the awakening of the senses and the development of the students. The school consists of many additional educational rooms. The aim of our spaces is to offer maximum outdoor view, so as to strengthen the links between this educational spaces and the farm. The morphology of the school buildings allows an interiority for the children’s playgrounds. The morphology of the building has been designed to maximise the solar gain while avoiding the generation of too many masks. We have thought of a bioclimatic facade to the south, which makes it possible to take advantage of the free solar gains in winter and to avoid overheating in summer.

OSTWALD

«THE CAMPAIGN CITY»

Project of the 3rd year, made by group of 10 students. Development of a new strategy for the city of Ostwald (France).

Throughout the 3rd year, we have been working in collaboration with the municipality of the city of Ostwald, an urban town in Strasbourg. This city, surrounded by the highway on one side and a railway on the other, is looking to welcome a new and more diversified population. During the first part of the semester, we worked on the city scale, with the drawing of a masterplan for Ostwald. The aim was to draw up a global strategy, in groups of 10, to create connections with neighbouring towns and assert Ostwald’s position in the metropolitan area of Strasbourg. Our group strategy was to reconnect Ostwald with the surrounding towns through soft mobility (tramway in particular) and to develop green breaks within the city in order to bring nature back into it, thus erasing the cission created by the railway. We have set up new facilities, including an agricultural college, and have developed several ways of living in different areas: living by the water in the east, living in the fields in the west and living in a green city at the heart of the urban fabric.

WEST DISTRICT

«TO LEAVE IN THE FIELDS» The continuity of the previous project in Ostwald.

During the second part of the semester, we divided our group in two. Here, we are at the scale of the neighborhood. We have chosen to develop the western district, located on the city border. «Living in the fields» had two challenges: to create an attractive neighbourhood with a new way of life and to erase the brutal border between the city and the farmland. We worked with L-shaped buildings, creating inner courtyards. These would be available to the inhabitants for shared vegetables gardens that would allow a smooth transition between the urban fabric and the fields.

PLATEFORME

MEDITATIVE PAVILLON

Project of the second semester of the 3rd year, at the «Plateforme». Meditation pavillon imagined for the artist M.Dejean Michel. For the second semester of my 3rd year, I decided to join the INSA Platform. The Platform corresponds to a mini-agency of architecture composed by a small group of students of the school. The proposed projects are real projects, for real clients. This year, we had a request from a local artist, Michel Dejean. This painter was planning to build a meditation pavilion, in connection with his work, in the city of Strasbourg. We began our project by meeting with Mr. Dejean, first at school, then in his studio. In groups of 4, we proposed 3 different projects to the artist. For our project, we chose the site of the «Parc de Pourtalès», a large park located near the Castel of Pourtalès.We decided to work on a pavilion offering different atmospheres and views, mixing different materials: stone, adobe and water. This space then becomes a quiet and contemplative space, in relation with the surrounding nature, ideal for meditation.

REHABILITATION MIROIR

2nd year project with Eymeric AZIMZADEH. Rehabilitation of a group of Alsatian houses for the town of Bischwiller. My second year was characterized by a work in collaboration with the Municipality of Bischwiller, a town located in Alsace, close to Strasbourg . In a context of requalification and revitalization of the city, we were asked to invest the city and to think about several architectural projects. For the first half of the year, we invested a empty space in order to set up an apartment building. We also carried out a sociological study on the population of Bischwiller, in order to target their needs and better understand the history of the town. For the second half of the year, we worked on a rehabilitation project. The promotion was spread over 3 different sites, chosen by the town council. Our site was located in the heart of the city, close to the town hall. We had to carry out the renovation of an old Alsatian house, which is now abandoned. We set up a museum, studios of artists as well as housing. The shape of the buildings also made it possible to create a small interior patio, left free in the evening for the inhabitants and for the museum during the day. We worked with local stone and zinc, creating a strong contrast between the old and the new. A large glass section separated the two materials, giving a view of the city from the museum space.

MICRO-FOLIE

LIGHTENING PAVILLON

2nd year project. «MICRO-FOLIE»: imagine a welcome pavilion for the university campus of Strasbourg.

This project was proposed to us between our two semester projects of the 2nd year. Worked over a short period of time (1 month), the subject was to imagine a welcome pavilion for the University of Strasbourg. We had the choice between 3 different places, all on or near the campus. We were free to invest the space and choose the inside program.

MICRO FOLIE choose

For my pavilion, I decided to DERULE Lise - SITE 2 01/03/2017 a small square at the entrance of the campus, opposite the law school. I imagined a pavilion made up of two translucent concrete blocks surrounded by a porous wooden envelope. Inside is a café, a workshop and a small exhibition space. The pavilion gives passers-by the choice to walk around it, enter and visit it or to walk right through it. The wooden cladding and the translucent concrete give my pavilion this transparency and gives it a different identity between day and night.

CHARRETTES

ABOVE THE FACADES

«Charrettes» of the 3rd year. Collaborative work to finalize Antoine DIGONNET’s graduation project. In the architecture department of the INSA in Strasbourg, the month of September is devoted to learning through inter-pormotion mutual self-help. Each graduating student has a team of at least one student from each year, with the goal of concretizing his or her final project. This month is very enriching both academically and socially. It also teaches us how to work in a team, with a dead-line. The more the years go by, the more responsibilities we have within the conception of the project. These documents correspond to the charrettes done in 3rd year, for Antoine Digonnet’s project. Antoine was working on the creation of a music school coupled with a theatre, on a plot of land in the heart of the city of Brussels. During these carts, I worked for the first time in the design team. Indeed, during my first two years, I was in charge of building the models. This first experience in the design team allowed me to discover the different computer softwares and in particular, to make my first perspective on Photoshop.

WORKSHOP

WITH «ATELIER NA»

Urban art project, from the workshop of the 4th year, managed by the association «Atelier Na».

During the week of transition between the two semesters, the architecture students of the INSA of Strasbourg gather for a session of workshops. We have the choice between 10 different workshops. In the fourth year, I chose to do the workshop proposed by Atelier Na, a collective created by graduates in architecture at INSA Strasbourg. We moved to the Rhine port, located on the border between Germany and Strasbourg. For 3 days, about twenty students from mixed classes joined together to build a mural as well as a dome, using their hands and recycled materials. Both were made on the grounds of a house abandoned today, close to the place called «Le Môle Citadelle».

STREET ART

«INHALE, EXHALE»

Urban art project, from the 3rd year. Realised with Mathilde BOIS, Chloé DI FAZIO et Laurine GORACY. Performance in the streets of Ostwald.

In the city of Ostwald, where our urban planning and architectural projects were held, we were asked to carry out a street art project. We were free to do what we wanted and had very few restrictions. We decided to highlight the noisy side of the city, where there was heavy traffic or a lot of work, for example. To do this, we decided to make a city performance, captured in photos. This performance consisted in practicing yoga in the streets of Ostwald, a symbolic activity of relaxation and calm. This symbolism of yoga and meditation was in contradiction with the noisy places of the city. This strong symbol then reflects the breathing and life of the city. Inhale, exhale, inhale...

PLASTIC ART KIND OF BLUE

Arts plastic project of the 3rd year with Arthur MARC et Raphaël BROSETTE. Construction of new concrete paving stone the street.

During our art class, we explored the streets of Strasbourg. The purpose of this workshop was to replace existing paving stones by concrete paving stones manufactured by ourselves. The theme to be respected was the theme of «water». Initially individual, we took the decision to work in threes, reinforcing the impact of the project on the site. Using a fine grain size, white concrete and blue pigment, we created 9 paving stones translating 9 shades of blue. The random addition of pigment as well as a piece of aluminum reflects the random movement of water. The project is still visible in the streets of Strasbourg, as well as from Google Street View, 2 rue du Travail in Strasbourg.

PLASTIC ART LAND ART

Land art project of the 2nd year, with Mathilde BOIS and Raphaêl BROSSETTE. Short-lived installation in the woods of Brumath.

This workshop in the forest of Brumath takes place every year by the promotion of the 2nd years. Our theme was «perspective». We had at our disposition all the materials present in the forest as well as some other utensils of do-it-yourself. The forest thus becomes the playground of the students who invest it as they wish. Our work invites the spectator to focus his or her attention on the heart of the forest. A succession of sloping wooden logs connect at the top to form triangles. The first one is obvious but the others appear by optical effect when one stands in a certain position in the installation.
