GRAPHIC DESIGNER
Let me introduce myself to you. My name is Lisemarie Van Loon and I am a freelance graphic designer. Last year I did my Master of Graphic Design in Sint Lucas Antwerp. Personally I love to design for a big social goal or doing something to feel you make a change in the world. Photography is one of my strongest media that I use. Furthermore, I’m also interested in magazine and book design, corporate identity and silk screen printing. In this book you will see a selection of my designs. Thanks a lot. Lisemarie

Cover portfolio introduction - portfolio title References References - My artist statement Model photography
I made these photos during my extra subject ‘People & Portrait photography’. These pictures are inspired by Liesje Reyskens. I really love to photograph things, especially for designing stuff. This was the first time that I noticed that photography could be the better medium to me to design things.
pg. 10
Cirque du Soleil corporate identity
In BA2, we had to create a new corporate identity about an organisation involved with ‘movement’. I chose to renew ‘Cirque du Soleil’. I made this book in order to get an idea how it would look on the street, and also included the new logo, posters, etc.
pg. 11
Cirquel typography
In order to make my new logo of Cirque du Soleil, I wanted to make a new typography based on the form of a circle. I called my new typography ‘Cirquel’. The complete alphabet is developped by Fontstruct.com.
pg. 12-13
Structur3d
In the first semester of BA3, I made together with Yara Jumelet, a student of Visual Arts, the movie called ‘Structur3d’. We based ourselves on neurotic acts by people and also on the work of Fabrice Gygi where ‘Power’ is very important. This was made for the project ‘ARTBERG’: The Arenbergschouwburg (theatre) in Antwerp wanted to have art combined with graphic design.
pg. 14-15
Rhythm site
This e-publication or site is made by Gertjan Verheyden, Joran Meynen & Lisemarie Van Loon. It includes all of our research about our group work ‘Rhythm’ (BA3). The design of the site is based on a pianola. You can scroll through it from left to right. On each cube you can clic and you will get more information.
pg. 16-17
Business cards
During the second semester of BA3, we had the subject ‘Werkveld Grafische Vormgeving’. We had to make an own website with a selection of our portfolio. You can see this on http://lisemarievanloon.tumblr.com. Also we had to make our own business cards, in order to give them away at some design bureaus which were interesting to us. Some of my business cards are developped by silk screen printing.
pg. 18-19
Teclado typography
This experimental typography is based on different rhythms. Each letter of the alphabet has got another sound. I made this in scores so that any musician could read. This alphabet could be a new way of communication for musicians.
pg. 20
Teclado moviestills
These are moviestills of musicians ‘talking’ Teclado. It sounds quite minimalistic. Also each language sounds a little bit different.
pg. 21
Teclado books
I made two extra books with my Teclado font in it. One is a pocket book for musicians in order to learn by heart the Teclado alphabet. The other one is a text book translated in Teclado partitures. This text has been displayed by musicians in my movie.
pg. 22-23
A move a day
This project is based on the theme ‘Movement’ and inspired by ‘Rhythm’. During a month, I took each day a picture which includes movement. Sometimes I moved my camera, sometimes the object or person was moving on the picture. I dated this each day on my blog http://lisemarievanloon.wordpress.com.
pg. 24-25
Personalized maps of Antwerp
These personalized maps are part of my first master thesis (2013-2014) which is about a research of Couchsurfing and introducing couchsurfers to new ways of looking at the city, instead of a typical tourist. The fact that Couchsurfing is already a very ‘extreme’ tourism which contains risks and trust, these people are also looking for adventures. I made a personal map for each couchsurfer, welcoming them in Antwerp in their mother tongue, furthermore I made some checklists about the South of Antwerp, which is the neighbourhood where they were staying (my place).
pg. 26-27
Collages couchsurfing
My couchsurfing project went further by the more input I got from them and the input that I gave to them. I asked many things and knowledge about their countries and compared it to Antwerp. Furthermore all the visuals that they gave me about a special memory of their country, a photo or a drawing, an important street,... were used in my collages which became my final product in the end.
pg. 28-33
Made it
During my second Master (2014-2015) I was working on another social project. This time about the international residents in Antwerp. Since the fact that Antwerp is on the second place of the most biggest variety of nationalities living here, it became a very interesting topic. I interviewed about 50 people on the street and by contacting them via Expats on Facebook and asked always the same questions, afterwards I took a portrait of them and asked as well an object that means a lot to them linked to their job or country of origin. There came many interesting stories above. I visualized also the residents that I interviewed by their flags and also on the map. In the final spread you see some spreads of my book that I made, called ‘Made it’. I called it like this because all these people ‘made it’ in Antwerp by finding a job, study, learning the language Dutch/French,...
pg. 34
Collage ‘Move’
This is one of the collages that I made during my extra subject in 2012. Whole the time we were cutting in magazines and after that looking for combinations of pictures. It was a great experience. This one was one of the best collages and impressed my teacher so much, that it remains some meaningful visual to me.

Information Lisemarie Van Loon Back cover
My artist statement As a graphic designer I am engaged in social design, photography, book design, typography and also silk screen printing. In Sint Lucas Antwerp we had different assignments so we could easily find our own way in graphic design. The way we work at school is very good: we always work from research of blogs and first sketches before we get digitally started. I think this is very necessary, and above all we save a lot of time. These artists and graphic designers inspire me a lot: Annelys De Vet, Annelies Vaneycken, Francis Alÿs, Josef Müller-Brockmann, Saul Bass. They are very different in work and material, but they affect my graphic work. So far, we have participated in two projects which were very enriching to me. Especially in the last project ARTBERG we got the chance to have an exhibition in the Arenbergschouwburg (Antwerp). We also had an exhibition of our bachelor thesis in the Campus Congres, Antwerp. These exhibitions are very important for us as a graphic designer. We learn to know more people in the graphic area, give our knowledge to others by illustrating our work, etc. I also participated the ‘Leerling/Meester project’ where I worked together with other visual artist students about a chosen subject and guided by a professional. I did also exhibit my work Teclado thanks to this project. Finally, I think it’s very important to have contacts in the graphic area in order to find a possible job in the future.
