The Library Master Course / BAS Autumn / 2012 Professor APP / Cecilie Andersson DAV / Eva Kun, Mai Elin Bjerck Site / Bergen School of Architecture

Course description The aim of this master course is to move and improve the library at BAS. The school wants the students to take part in shaping this ambition. We will have to explore the many roles of the library, as simple programs but also as modes of significance. We will look at aspects of contemplation, knowledge-exchange, documentation and organization. During the semester we will work on conceptions to both facilitate the library program with storage and display of books and magazines and create a space for quiet reading and lively sessions. This will be a construction course where we take part in realizing our ideas through actual building of walls, ceiling and floor as well as shelf-units and furniture. We will have to consider spatial qualities like light, air and noise to establish a good work environment for the staff and the visitors. Part of the practical work will be outsourced to allow us to complete the task from initial ideas to finalization during a single semester. Included in the course there will be workshops that deals with concrete, wood and glass, light, materiality and spatial qualities.

This master course was a group work, planning and building the new school library. The site within the existing school was given, and the work consisted of building a warm library in a uninsulated part of the school which involved new insulated flooring, new internal and external walls as well as interior elements. As students we were our own client and architect, developer and builder of the library.

Think Tank Bergen Exploring peripheral urban ecologies Master Course / Bergen / Autumn / 2013 Professors APP/ Jonathan Woodroffe, Jerome Picard DAV/ Eva Kun Site / Sandsli, Bergen

The aim of the course was to study the Bergen periphery by looking at how business ecology and new types of work spaces could work as the driver of a development of Bergen as a metropolitan region. Research and focus on density and how to maintain/improve the quality of living through density: A special attention was put on the development arising through the construction of the infrastructural corridors of the “bybanen- the new tramway in Bergen. The site for the course was Sandslimarka, in the south corridor of Bergen where step 1 of the Bergen Bybane (tramway) is built and step two is in planning. The course looked at how new types of workspace could contribute in developing more diverse and sustainable neighborhoods. Another important focus was how old industrial estates could be reused by creative industries and how businesses could cluster and become more diverse to integrate more public components in order to transform purely industrial spaces into public and living ares.

New structures contain programs such as conference rooms, training facilities, workspace and other common programs related to the boating industry at Søreide. Part of the new cluster is connected to the waterfront, which results in a improved dock/harbour on the south side of the site.

The space in between the existing buildings are developed and given new functions. In addition new buildings with additional programs are added in the attempt to make the area more attractive for people working and living in the area.

This is still a place for parking your boat, or for the boat shops to park boats for sale. In addition there are common programs for people living on their boat.

A place to access your boat or sit and fish or enjoy other activities by the water.

The old boat house is transformed and provides easy access to the water, places to sit on the gras or on the dock

Finding the sea that is already there Diploma / Bergen / Spring / 2014 Tutors APP / Camilla Viv책s-Valen / DAV / Eva Kun Site / Bergen

How the city Bergen meets the sea is constantly changing. Is the water still reachable for the public or is it just a part of the pretty picture? Historically, Bergen has been a central port in Norway. This affected the architecture and also the activity around the waterfront of the city. Long rows of boat houses and high levels of activity was typical for the area. The port was the heart of the city. Today some of the historical architecture still exists, but the waterfront has gone through significant changes. Big buildings, industry and fenced areas work as barriers between the city and the fjord. The two parts have in some ways become disconnected. Based on experiments and findings through a mapping of the entire waterfront area, from Hegreneset at Sandviken in the north to Laksev책g shipyard west of the city, this diploma project aims to identify how we use the waterfront today. This will result in architectural inserts along the waterfront with the aim to enhance the accessiblility and connection to the sea.

The mapping led to a categorization of different types of sites, and resulted in the selection of the following 8 sites for further studies.

D

The 8 sites are of different character and either provide good access to the water/waterfront or a poor facilitation towards public use. Going into the sites the edge conditions, users, nearby buildings and programs and more will be taken into the discussion. The aim is to find areas suited for further development of some kind, in the attempt to facilitate for a different kind of use in addition to lifting the already existing qualities of the site.

Sandviken / Historic site

Laksev책g / Industrial site

Nordnes / Park and recreation

Several sites were analyzed and decomposed in the attempt to gather more information about how the different areas were in use. The following 3 were brought further into the project for development.

The walkway / Nordnes Connecting the city, the park and the sea. The park at Nordnes is beautiful and a popular place in the city. The walk to the park from the city is badly connected, and at one point the road along the sea stops. A row of sea houses block the visibilty towards the water. To keep and strengthen the connection to the sea, a walkway on the outside of the buildings is proposed. The walkway is of wood, standing on poles elevated at sertain points to make it possible for small boats to go under and dock by land. This walk on the water showes this part of the city from a different angle, and makes the walk to Nordnes a different experience activating the water like it was centuries ago. Nordnes N

The garbage pier / Sandviken

12m

165m

An historical appreciation Sandviken used to be the main harbour for fishing boats and the architecture along the sea still bears evidance of this. Amongst the houses is an old garbage pier, standing on wooden poles. This used to be where garbage and sewage was dumped in the ocean- therefor streching far out from the shore. This is a popular public pier- or evan a local terrasse where people come on nice days. To highlight this space, and broaden the use of it, a floating pier is connected to it, streching 150 m out into the water. This provides a nice promenade out onto the water, giving the opportunuty to see the city from the water which was the normal way to see the city 100 years ago.

The Crane / Laksev책g A gentrification process This area at Laksev책g is a functioning ships warft, but it may move to another place within short time. This will open up an enourmes area, most likely being developed into housing and/or business parks. Many areas such as this one has gone through a gentrification process, in many cases privatizing big areas but also providing common outdoor spaces. These public areas are often popular but there does occur conflicts between the different users. The people living or working there want privacy and silence whilst the people using the areas for bathing or barbequing may cause noise and different challenges. For this area it is proposed to start with the public approach, keeping parts of the areas identy, in this case a crane and a dry dock. The crane is given a stairway so that it can be used as a diving tower or just a viewing tower. Laksev책g N

The floating sauna / pavillion 1 / As a suggestion for all the areas that were mainly facilitated for boats, a non site specific innstallation is proposed. This floating pavillion can funtion as a saunawhen closed, while when unfolded it is a floating dock giving the oportunity to approach the water in a different way then what is possible most places in the city.

Work Øygarden 2013 Client / The Dale Oen Experience / Completed / 2013 This cabin is the base for an organisation called the Dale Oen Experience. This is a place where kids meet to experience adventure and challenges such as kaiaking and climbing. The cabin did not need any work but the outside area facing the sea was leveled with gravel. The final outcome was a wooden pattio with stairs down to the centre of the area. The space under the main upper terrace was cleaned out so that the kayaks could easily be stacked and made accessible. The area by the water was also given a wooden deck.
